for_o crete_n at_o his_o return_n he_o and_o these_o two_o youth_n lead_v up_o a_o solemn_a procession_n with_o bough_n and_o vine-branche_n in_o their_o hand_n and_o in_o the_o same_o habit_n that_o be_v now_o wear_v at_o the_o celebration_n of_o the_o feast_n of_o bough_n these_o branch_n they_o carry_v in_o honour_n of_o bacchus_n and_o ariadne_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o their_o story_n before_o relate_v or_o rather_o because_o they_o happen_v to_o return_v in_o autumn_n the_o time_n of_o gather_v the_o grape_n the_o woman_n who_o they_o call_v deipnophorae_n or_o supper-carrier_n be_v take_v thus_o busy_o do_v they_o run_v about_o bring_v banquet_n and_o refreshment_n to_o their_o child_n and_o because_o the_o good_a woman_n than_o tell_v their_o son_n and_o daughter_n a_o great_a many_o fine_a tale_n and_o story_n to_o comfort_v and_o encourage_v they_o under_o the_o danger_n they_o be_v go_v upon_o it_o have_v still_o continue_v a_o custom_n that_o at_o this_o feast_n old_a fable_n and_o tale_n shall_v be_v the_o chief_a discourse_n and_o for_o all_o these_o particularity_n we_o be_v behold_v to_o the_o history_n of_o demon_n there_o be_v then_o a_o place_n choose_v out_o and_o sacrifice_n to_o he_o and_o the_o house_n of_o the_o phytalidae_n have_v the_o oversee_n of_o these_o sacrifice_n theseus_n do_v they_o that_o honour_n in_o recompense_n of_o their_o former_a hospitality_n now_o after_o the_o death_n of_o his_o father_n aegeus_n frame_v in_o his_o mind_n a_o great_a and_o wonderful_a city_n design_n he_o gather_v together_o all_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o attica_n into_o one_o town_n and_o make_v they_o one_o people_n of_o one_o city_n that_o be_v before_o disperse_v and_o very_o difficult_a to_o be_v assemble_v upon_o any_o affair_n though_o relate_v to_o the_o common_a benefit_n of_o they_o all_o nay_o often_o such_o difference_n and_o quarrel_n happen_v between_o they_o as_o occasion_v bloodshed_n and_o war_n these_o he_o by_o his_o persuasion_n appease_v and_o go_v from_o people_n to_o people_n and_o from_o tribe_n to_o tribe_n propose_v his_o design_n of_o a_o common_a agreement_n between_o they_o those_o of_o a_o more_o private_a and_o mean_a condition_n ready_o embrace_v so_o good_a advice_n to_o those_o of_o great_a power_n and_o interest_n he_o promise_v a_o commonwealth_n wherein_o monarchy_n be_v lay_v aside_o the_o power_n shall_v be_v in_o the_o people_n and_o that_o reserve_v to_o himself_o only_o to_o be_v continue_v the_o commander_n of_o their_o arm_n and_o the_o preserver_n of_o their_o law_n there_o shall_v be_v a_o equal_a distribution_n of_o all_o thing_n else_o between_o they_o and_o by_o this_o mean_v bring_v they_o over_o to_o his_o proposal_n the_o rest_n fear_v his_o power_n which_o be_v already_o grow_v very_o formidable_a and_o know_v his_o courage_n and_o resolution_n choose_v rather_o to_o be_v persuade_v than_o force_v into_o a_o compliance_n he_o then_o dissolve_v all_o the_o distinct_a court_n of_o justice_n and_o council-hall_n and_o corporation_n and_o build_v one_o common_a prytaneum_n and_o council-hall_n where_o it_o stand_v to_o this_o day_n and_o out_o of_o the_o old_a and_o the_o new_a city_n he_o make_v one_o which_o he_o name_v athens_n ordain_v a_o common_a feast_n and_o sacrifice_n to_o be_v for_o ever_o observe_v which_o he_o call_v panathenaea_n or_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o all_o the_o unite_a athenian_n he_o institute_v also_o another_o sacrifice_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o stranger_n that_o will_v come_v to_o fix_v in_o athens_n call_v power_n this_o great_a change_n not_o without_o advice_n from_o the_o go_n for_o have_v send_v to_o consult_v the_o oracle_n of_o delphos_n concern_v the_o fortune_n of_o his_o new_a government_n and_o city_n invite_v all_o stranger_n to_o come_v and_o enjoy_v equal_a privilege_n with_o the_o native_n and_o some_o be_v of_o opinion_n that_o the_o common_a form_n of_o proclamation_n in_o athens_n come_v hither_o all_o you_o people_n be_v the_o word_n that_o theseus_n cause_v to_o be_v proclaim_v when_o he_o thus_o set_v up_o a_o commonwealth_n consist_v in_o a_o manner_n of_o all_o nation_n yet_o he_o suffer_v not_o his_o state_n by_o the_o promiscuous_a multitude_n that_o flow_v in_o to_o be_v turn_v into_o confusion_n and_o be_v leave_v without_o any_o order_n or_o degree_n but_o be_v the_o first_o that_o divide_v the_o commonwealth_n into_o three_o distinct_a rank_n the_o nobleman_n the_o husbandman_n and_o artificer_n to_o the_o nobility_n he_o commit_v the_o choice_n of_o magistrate_n the_o teach_n and_o dispense_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o interpretation_n of_o all_o holy_a and_o religious_a thing_n the_o whole_a city_n as_o to_o all_o other_o matter_n be_v as_o it_o be_v reduce_v to_o a_o exact_a equality_n the_o noble_n excel_v the_o rest_n in_o honour_n the_o husbandman_n in_o profit_n and_o the_o artificer_n in_o number_n and_o theseus_n be_v the_o first_o who_o as_o aristotle_n say_v out_o of_o a_o inclination_n to_o popular_a government_n part_v with_o the_o regal_a power_n and_o which_o homer_n also_o seem_v to_o witness_v in_o his_o catalogue_n of_o the_o ship_n where_o he_o give_v the_o name_n of_o people_n to_o the_o athenian_n only_o he_o than_o coin_a money_n and_o stamp_v it_o with_o the_o image_n of_o a_o ox_n either_o in_o memory_n of_o the_o marathonian_n bull_n or_o of_o taurus_n who_o he_o vanquish_v or_o else_o to_o put_v his_o people_n in_o mind_n to_o follow_v husbandry_n and_o from_o this_o coin_n come_v the_o expression_n so_o frequent_a among_o the_o greek_n of_o a_o thing_n be_v worth_a ten_o or_o a_o hundred_o oxen._n after_o this_o he_o join_v megara_n to_o attica_n and_o erect_v that_o famous_a pillar_n in_o the_o straits_n of_o peloponnesus_n which_o bear_v a_o inscription_n of_o two_o line_n show_v the_o bound_n of_o the_o two_o country_n that_o meet_v there_o on_o the_o east-side_n the_o inscription_n be_v thus_o this_o be_v not_o peloponnesus_n but_o jonia_n and_o on_o the_o westside_n thus_o this_o be_v peloponnesus_n not_o jonia_n he_o also_o institute_v annual_a game_n in_o emulation_n of_o hercules_n be_v ambitious_a that_o as_o the_o greek_n by_o that_o hero_n appointment_n celebrate_v the_o olympian_a game_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o jupiter_n so_o by_o his_o institution_n they_o shall_v celebrate_v the_o isthmian_a game_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o neptune_n for_o those_o that_o be_v there_o before_o observe_v dedicate_v to_o melicerta_n be_v perform_v private_o and_o in_o the_o night_n and_o consist_v rather_o of_o religious_a ceremony_n than_o of_o any_o open_a spectacle_n or_o public_a feast_n but_o some_o there_o be_v who_o say_v that_o the_o isthmian_a game_n be_v first_o institute_v in_o memory_n of_o sciron_n at_o the_o expiation_n which_o theseus_n make_v for_o his_o murder_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o nearness_n of_o kindred_n which_o be_v between_o they_o sciron_n be_v the_o son_n of_o canethus_n and_o heniocha_n the_o daughter_n of_o pittheus_n though_o other_o write_v that_o sinnis_n and_o not_o sciron_n be_v their_o son_n and_o that_o to_o his_o honour_n and_o not_o to_o the_o other_o these_o game_n be_v ordain_v by_o theseus_n and_o hellanicus_n and_o andro_n of_o halicarnassus_n write_v that_o at_o
the_o island_n receive_v ariadne_n very_o kind_o and_o administer_v all_o manner_n of_o comfort_n to_o she_o that_o be_v extreme_o afflict_v and_o almost_o dead_a with_o grief_n for_o be_v leave_v behind_o that_o they_o counterfeit_v kind_a letter_n and_o deliver_v they_o to_o she_o as_o send_v from_o theseus_n and_o when_o she_o fall_v in_o labour_n be_v very_o diligent_a in_o perform_v to_o her_o all_o the_o office_n that_o belong_v to_o woman_n but_o that_o she_o die_v in_o childbed_n before_o she_o can_v be_v deliver_v death_n and_o be_v by_o they_o honourable_o inter_v that_o soon_o after_o theseus_n return_v and_o be_v great_o afflict_v for_o her_o loss_n and_o at_o his_o departure_n leave_v a_o considerable_a sum_n of_o money_n among_o those_o of_o the_o island_n order_v they_o to_o sacrifice_v and_o pay_v divine_a honour_n to_o ariadne_n and_o cause_v two_o little_a image_n to_o be_v make_v and_o dedicate_v to_o she_o one_o of_o silver_n and_o the_o other_o of_o brass_n moreover_o that_o on_o the_o second_o day_n of_o september_n which_o be_v sacred_a to_o ariadne_n they_o have_v this_o ceremony_n she_o among_o their_o sacrifice_n to_o have_v a_o youth_n lie_v in_o and_o with_o his_o voice_n and_o gesture_n counterfeit_v all_o the_o pain_n of_o a_o woman_n in_o travail_n and_o that_o the_o amathusian_o call_v the_o grove_n in_o which_o they_o show_v her_o tomb_n the_o grove_n of_o venus_n ariadne_n different_n yet_o from_o this_o account_n some_o of_o the_o naxian_o write_v that_o there_o be_v two_o minos_n and_o two_o ariadne_n one_o of_o which_o they_o say_v be_v marry_v to_o bacchus_n in_o the_o isle_n of_o naxos_n and_o bear_v a_o son_n name_v staphylus_n but_o that_o the_o other_o of_o a_o late_a age_n be_v ravish_v by_o theseus_n and_o be_v afterward_o desert_v by_o he_o retire_v to_o naxos_n with_o her_o nurse_n corcyna_n who_o grave_a they_o yet_o show_v that_o this_o ariadne_n also_o die_v there_o and_o be_v worship_v by_o the_o island_n but_o in_o a_o different_a manner_n from_o the_o former_a for_o her_o day_n be_v celebrate_v with_o feast_n and_o revel_n and_o a_o universal_a joy_n but_o all_o the_o sacrifice_n perform_v to_o the_o latter_a be_v mingle_v with_o sorrow_n and_o mourning_n now_o theseus_n in_o his_o return_n from_o crete_n crete_n put_v in_o at_o delos_n and_o have_v sacrifice_v to_o the_o god_n of_o the_o island_n and_o dedicate_v to_o the_o temple_n the_o image_n of_o venus_n which_o ariadne_n have_v give_v he_o he_o dance_v with_o the_o young_a athenian_n a_o dance_n that_o in_o memory_n of_o he_o be_v still_o preserve_v among_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o delos_n which_o in_o a_o certain_a order_n have_v turn_n and_o returning_n that_o imitate_v the_o intricate_a wind_n of_o the_o labyrinth_n and_o this_o dance_n as_o dicaearchus_n write_v be_v call_v among_o the_o delian_n the_o crane_n this_o he_o dance_v round_o the_o ceratonian_a altar_n so_o call_v from_o its_o be_v compact_v together_o and_o adorn_v only_o with_o horn_n take_v from_o the_o left_a side_n of_o the_o head_n they_o say_v also_o that_o he_o institute_v game_n in_o delos_n where_o he_o be_v the_o first_o that_o begin_v the_o custom_n of_o give_v a_o palm_n to_o the_o victor_n when_o they_o be_v come_v near_o the_o coast_n of_o attica_n so_o great_a be_v the_o joy_n for_o the_o happy_a success_n of_o their_o voyage_n that_o neither_o theseus_n aegeus_n himself_o nor_o the_o pilot_n remember_v to_o hang_v out_o the_o sail_n which_o shall_v have_v be_v the_o token_n of_o their_o safety_n to_o aegeus_n who_o know_v nothing_o of_o their_o success_n for_o grief_n throw_v himself_o headlong_o from_o a_o rock_n and_o perish_a in_o the_o sea_n but_o theseus_n be_v arrive_v at_o the_o port_n of_o phalera_n pay_v there_o the_o sacrifice_n which_o he_o have_v vow_v to_o the_o god_n at_o his_o set_n out_o to_o sea_n and_o send_v a_o herald_n to_o the_o city_n to_o carry_v the_o news_n of_o his_o safe_a return_n at_o his_o entrance_n into_o the_o city_n the_o herald_n find_v the_o people_n for_o the_o most_o part_n full_a of_o grief_n for_o the_o loss_n of_o their_o king_n other_o as_o may_v be_v well_o believe_v as_o full_a of_o joy_n for_o the_o message_n that_o he_o bring_v and_o whole_o bend_v to_o make_v much_o of_o he_o and_o crown_v he_o with_o garland_n for_o so_o acceptable_a news_n which_o he_o indeed_o accept_v of_o but_o hang_v they_o upon_o his_o herald_n staff_n and_o thus_o return_v to_o the_o sea_n side_n before_o theseus_n have_v finish_v his_o libation_n to_o the_o god_n he_o stay_v without_o for_o fear_v of_o disturb_v the_o holy_a rite_n but_o as_o soon_o as_o the_o sacrifice_n be_v end_v he_o enter_v and_o relate_v the_o whole_a story_n of_o the_o king_n death_n upon_o the_o hear_n of_o which_o with_o great_a lamentation_n and_o a_o confuse_a tumult_n of_o grief_n they_o run_v with_o all_o haste_n to_o the_o city_n and_o from_o hence_o they_o say_v it_o come_v that_o at_o this_o day_n in_o the_o feast_n oscophoria_n the_o herald_n be_v not_o crown_v but_o his_o staff_n and_o that_o the_o people_n then_o present_a still_o break_v out_o at_o the_o either_o to_o be_v a_o prey_n to_o a_o monster_n or_o a_o victim_n upon_o the_o tomb_n of_o androgeus_n or_o what_o be_v least_o of_o all_o to_o live_v vile_o and_o dishonourable_o in_o slavery_n to_o insult_a and_o cruel_a man_n a_o man_n can_v express_v what_o a_o act_n of_o boldness_n or_o courage_n or_o justice_n to_o the_o public_a or_o of_o honour_n and_o bravery_n that_o be_v so_o that_o methinks_v the_o philosopher_n do_v not_o define_v love_n ill_o to_o be_v the_o service_n of_o the_o god_n in_o assist_v and_o preserve_v youth_n for_o the_o love_n of_o ariadne_n above_o all_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o proper_a work_n and_o design_n of_o some_o god_n in_o order_n to_o preserve_v theseus_n and_o indeed_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o blame_v she_o for_o love_v he_o but_o rather_o wonder_v all_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v not_o alike_o affect_v towards_o he_o and_o if_o she_o alone_o be_v so_o true_o i_o dare_v pronounce_v her_o worthy_a of_o the_o love_n of_o a_o god_n who_o be_v herself_o so_o great_a a_o lover_n of_o virtue_n and_o goodness_n and_o the_o brave_a man._n but_o both_o these_o natural_o affect_v government_n neither_o live_v up_o to_o the_o true_a character_n of_o a_o king_n but_o fly_v off_o and_o run_v one_o into_o popularity_n the_o other_o into_o tyranny_n fall_v both_o into_o the_o same_o fault_n out_o of_o different_a passion_n for_o a_o prince_n chief_a end_n be_v to_o preserve_v his_o empire_n which_o be_v do_v no_o less_o by_o avoid_v indecency_n than_o by_o maintain_v a_o decorum_n in_o all_o thing_n whoever_o be_v either_o too_o remiss_a or_o too_o strict_a in_o this_o be_v no_o more_o a_o king_n or_o a_o prince_n but_o either_o too_o popular_a a_o man_n or_o too_o lordly_a and_o so_o become_v either_o odious_a or_o contemptible_a to_o his_o subject_n this_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o fault_n of_o easiness_n and_o good_a nature_n the_o other_o of_o pride_n and_o severity_n but_o if_o we_o must_v not_o in_o all_o respect_n impute_v misfortune_n to_o the_o fate_n but_o consider_v in_o they_o the_o difference_n of_o man_n manner_n and_o passion_n as_o the_o unreasonable_a and_o inconsiderate_a effect_n of_o wrath_n and_o anger_n a_o man_n can_v neither_o excuse_v one_o in_o his_o behaviour_n to_o his_o brother_n nor_o the_o other_o to_o his_o son_n though_o the_o anger_n of_o theseus_n be_v more_o excusable_a because_o it_o proceed_v from_o a_o great_a cause_n as_o be_v strike_v with_o the_o severe_a lash_n romulus_n have_v disagree_v with_o his_o brother_n advise_o and_o deliberate_o upon_o the_o concern_v of_o the_o public_a one_o will_v think_v he_o can_v not_o of_o the_o sudden_a have_v be_v put_v into_o so_o great_a passion_n but_o love_n and_o jealousy_n and_o the_o complaint_n of_o his_o wife_n which_o few_o man_n can_v avoid_v be_v provoke_v with_o seduce_v theseus_n to_o commit_v that_o outrage_n upon_o his_o son_n and_o what_o be_v more_o romulus_n in_o his_o anger_n commit_v a_o action_n of_o most_o unfortunate_a consequence_n but_o that_o of_o theseus_n
