built for Jupiter and so continued three years and a half as Antiocbus prophaned it Dan. 7.25 Say others The outer Court and the City left to the Gentiles is that great part of the visible Church left under the Papacy to such gross Idolatry as that it hath but the name of Christian as ●loathing restored Gentil●sme and is rejected of God Some take the 42 months literally for a certain time of three years and a half and some for uncertain time Christ was three years and a half in his ministeriall labour And this number is five times here recited Therefore like to be strictly meant Some old Fathers and some Papists understand it strictly of the reign of an Antichrist which they think is yet to come some of the time of the Papal reign which they say will be 1260 years beginning between 365. and 455. and ending between 1625 and 1715 in which space Babylon will fall Others state the time differently 3. And I will give power unto my two witnesses and they shall prophesie a thousand two hundred and threescore days clothed in sackcloth 3. Note There is great diversity of opinions who these witnesses are And yet most Protestants think that their time is past or the most of it and this prophecy fullfilled And Prophecies use to be plain when they are fulfilled Some new men say that they were the two Churches in Jerusalem of the Jewish and the Greek Language and their two Bishops who preached all that time against the sins of Jews and Gentiles For they think that the Jews and Greeks not understanding the same Language had in Jerusalem Antioch Rome Alexandria and other great Cities two Churches and Bishops Others that the two witnesses are Enoch and Elias that shall come when Antichrist cometh Others that they are the Old and New Testament which the Papacy shall oppose or as others the Preachers of the Old and New Testament named two because but sew but yet enough to promote the Reformation Brightman saith It is the Scriptures and the Assemblies of the Faithful Others that it is the Godly Magistracy and Ministry which the Papacy will cast down Others that God will hereafter send two with the Spirit of Enoch and Elias in whom all this shall be literally fulfilled Others that it is the Martyrs that have in several times opposed Popery to the death Called two in allusion to many old couples of Witnesses Moses and Aaron Caltb and Joshua Ezra and Nehemiah Haggai and Zachary Zerubbabel and Joshua to which Zech. 4.11 this Text specially relateth Moses and Elias on the Mount c. Clothed in Sackcloth is doing their Office in a time of great affliction And all this some think may be applied to divers couples that God hath used in divers times and parts of his Church As to the Waldenses and Albigenses to John Hus and Jerome of Prague to John Frederick Duke of Saxony and Philip Landgrave of Hassia long imprisoned by Charles the fifth and after delivered to the Lutherans and the reformed to King Edward 6. and his Uncle Protector Duke of Somerset c. Even as Christ sent out his Disciples by two and two Paul and Barnabas c. Lira's conceit that Silverius and Mennas were the two witnesses against the Eutychians is vain 4. These are the two olive-trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth 4. These are resembled to the two mentioned Zech. 4. These are as Olive Branches that empty themselves into the Lamps even the Servants of the Lord of the World for his Church 5. And if any man will hurt them fire proceedeth out of their mouth and devoureth their enemies and if any man will hurt them he must in this manner be killed 5. If any will persecute or silence them God will revenge their cause it refers to Elias that brought down fire from Heaven to destroy the Captains and their fifties 2. Kings 1.10 and to Moses Num. 16. Or say others The word in their mouths shall be as fire against all false Doctrines and Corruptions 6. These have power to shut heaven that it rain not in the days of their prophecy and have power over waters to turn them to blood and to smite the earth with all plagues as often as they will 6. And the Power that God gave their Ministry and reforming endeavours and the revenge that God will use against their persecutors were expressed to me as resembling Elias whose prayer stopt the rain for three years and a half and the plagues which God by Moses inflicted on Egypt Christ intimating this Matth. 17. When Moses the chief Law-giver and Elias the chief Prophet were the two great witnesses of his Glory And it is notable that Godly Magistrates and Godly Ministers have usually prospered together and fallen together and Magistracy and Ministry been together corrupted 7. And when they shall have finished their testimony the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them 8. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great City which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt where also our Lord was crucified 7 8. Note Christs witnesses Holy Magistrates and Ministers shall be marvellously preserved till they have finished their Testimony and they have done their work And then they may be destroyed by the Servants of the Devil and exposed to common scorn and perhaps be denyed buryall in the places where they preach't and were wonderfully blest and their enemies punished And this will seem to carnal men to be Gods disowning them and all that they did But the same sort of Men shall be raised again revive their work with more success and again silence the deluded insulting enemies These words where our Lord was crucified seem to favour their Exposition who apply all this to Jerusalem But most Protestants take it for the Roman state of Papal corruption And some by their carcasses say is meant the dead carcass of the Scripture or Religion or Assemblies which only is left among them But it seemeth to me to mean persons And whether the same thing as this killing and reviving the witnesses may not be done at Jerusalem and elsewhere again and again in several ages the Church having had its daies and night I yet know not 9. And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves 9. Say some They shall literally be cast out inhumanely unburyed say others They shall be politically slain deposed silenced imprisoned and cast by as dead and useless And not only their persecuting enemies but the deluded rabble and people shall see their oppression and insult over them and not suffer them to be restored or honoured 10. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them and make merry and shall send gifts one to
That there is a God whom we offended to whom he reconcileth us and who gave him to us in love and that his word is true and that by the Word and by the Holy Ghost he sanctifieth and prepareth us for Heaven 38. And he commanded the chariot to stand still and they went down both into the water both Philip and the eunuch and he baptized him 39. And when they were come up out of the water the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip that the eunuch saw him no more and he went on his way rejoycing 38 39. The Angel or Power of God caught away Phillip Note A Converted man hath great cause of rejoycing The Gospel proclaimed much more heartily received is matter of great joy 2. The Tradition of Abassia where is a great Empire of Christians is that they received the Christian Faith by this man who was the Queens Lord Treasurer And some Learned men conjecture that it was rather by Frumentius and Edesius and that it was Abassia that was by Historians miscalled India But if these first brought in Church Government by a Bishop the Eunuch might bring Lay Christianity before 40. But Philip was found at Azotus and passing through he preached in all the cities till he came to Cesarea CHAP. IX ANd Saul yet breathing out threatnings and slaughter against the Disciples of the Lord went unto the high Priest 2. And desired of him Letters to Damascus to the synagogues that if he found any of this way whether they were men or women he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem 1. Ignorant zeal made Saul set himself to destroy the Chrstians and sought to the High Priest for Power and travelled toward Damascus to do it that he might find them out and bring them in Bonds 3. And as he journeyed he came near Damascus and suddenly there shined round about him a light from Heaven 3. God the father of Light useth to shew himself to man by Light external and internal and so doe his Angels when the Devil is the Prince of Darkness 4. And he fell to the Earth and heard a voice saying unto him Saul Saul why persecutest thou me 4. The Power of God went forth with that Light and cast him to the ground c. Note 1. Love and Mercy in Christ expostulate with a blinded furious Sinner in order to his Conversion 2. But till Power had cast him down the Expostulation came not God can soon lay proud Prosecutors on the Earth and tame them and make them fear and hear 3. Whatever is done against Christians for any thing that Christ commandeth them he taketh as done against himself If we are bound by the Law of Christ to Preach to Pray to edifie each other to live a Holy life and we be reviled scorned called all manner of evil names imprisoned fined banished or murdered for this Christ will judge the doers of it as doing it against him 5. And he said Who art thou Lord And the Lord said I am Jesus whom thou persecutest It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks 5. Note Did wicked Prosecutors know Christ it would restrain them from persecution But the subtile Devil hath taught Hypocrite Christians to prosecute him as by his own Authority and Commission and in his own name and for his Church that is themselves 2. Christs Servants should no more doubt of their seasonable vindication when persecuted for their duty than if Christ was pesonally persecuted in their stead 3. O how terrible will it at last prove to Persecutors that they have kickt with their bare feet against the Pricks or Thorns of Gods displeasure Who hath hardened himself against him and hath prospered Or who hath Conquered the Almighty 6. And he trembling and astonished said Lord what wilt thou have me to do And the Lord said unto him Arise and go into the city and it shall be told thee what thou must do 6. Note God can make the firercest Persecutor tremble And then O how they are changed ready to do any thing that God will bid them which before they Persecuted And if the change be true this will hold and come to practice 2. O then what need have proud Persecutors to be cast down and how great a mercy to them it may prove 7. And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless hearing a voice but seeing no man 7. Note In Act. 22.9 it is said they that were with him saw the Light and were afraid but heard not the voice of him that spake The sence of both is they saw the Light and heard the sound which its like was a Thunder or like it but heard not the voice or words of Christ which in that sound were uttered to him nor saw any similitude of Christ Though we have only Pauls witness of this his after life of labour suffering and Miracles proveth it to be true 8. And Saul arose from the Earth and when his eyes were opened he saw no man but they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus 8. This stroak of blindness was to convince him of the blindness of his Persecuting fury 9. And he was three days without sight and neither did eat nor drink 9. Note This was some conformity to Christs being three Days and Nights in the darksom Grave 10. And there was a certain Disciple at Damascus named Ananias and to him said the Lord in a vision Ananias And he said Behold I am here Lord. 11. And the Lord said unto him Arise and go into the street which is called Straight and inquire in the House of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus for behold he prayeth 12. And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him that he might receive his sight 10. Ananias was a Christian appointed by God to this work on Saul 2. Praying was next to resolved obedience and submission the first fruits of Sauls Conversion 13. Then Ananias answered Lord I have heard by many of this man how much evil he hath done to thy Saints at Jerusalem 14. And here he hath authority from the chief Priests to bind all that call on thy name 13. Note Ananias objecteth what he had heard of Sauls as rendring his conversion improbable 15. But the Lord said unto him Go thy way for he is a chosen vessel unto me to bear my name before the Gentiles and Kings and the Children of Israel 16. For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my names sake 15. Obey me who know man and my own decrees and object not former things against me I have chosen him c. 17. And Ananias went his way and entred into the House and putting his hands on him said Brother Saul the Lord even Jesus that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest hath sent me that thou mightest receive thy sight and be filled with the holy Ghost 17. God hath made known to me what
The number of twelve Apostles was fitted to the Jews Twelve Tribes to whom the Gospel was first to be Preached But when Christ would gather the Gentile Church he increased the number and Paul was commissioned by a voice from Heaven and he and Barnabas by a special mission of Christ by the Holy Ghost 2. The significant ceremony of renting the Cloths is used by these two Apostles 3. All good Men hate Idolatry and would not be Idoliz'd themselves 4. The Devil would honour the ●inisters of Christ overmuch when it is to contradict their Doctrine 16. Who in times past suffered all Nations to walk in their own ways 17. Nevertheless he left not himself without witness in that he did good and gave us Rain from Heaven and fruitful seasons filling our hearts with food and gladness 16. He hath long connived by patient permissions at the manifold Idolatries and Vices of the World not punishing them as they deserved Yet his common mercies to Mens bodies did both signifie that he is the merciful Ruler and Benefactor to mankind and that he useth not sinful Man as the deserveth but in mercy obligeth all to gratitude and repentance 18. And with these sayings scarce restrained they the people that they had not done sacrifice unto them 18. Note So forward are Men to forbidden worship who are backward to spiritual and true 19. And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium who perswaded the people and having stoned Paul drew him out of city supposing he had been dead 19. Note This is the levity of the vulgar that one day will sacrifice as to Gods to those whom after they would kill as male factors So little trust is to be placed in them And though we know not whether most of the same Persons were the Persecutors its like that many were 20. Howbeit as the Disciples stood round about him he rose up and came into the city and the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe 20. Note It s like his recovery was a miracle else stoning would have disabled him to travel 21. And when they had Preached the Gospel to that city and had taught many they returned again to Lystra and to Iconium and Antioch 21. Note Persecution made them not forsake the Plantations which they had newly made 22. Confirming the souls of the Disciples and exhorting them to continue in the faith and that we must through much tribulation enter into the Kingdom of God 22. Confirming them against the Temptation of Persecution which must be suffered by those that will be saved 23. And when they had ordained them Eldets in every Church and had prayed with fasting they commended them to the Lord on whom they believed 23. They setled the Christians that were converted in these several Cities in Church order ordaining Elders in every Church to be the Guides and Teachers of the rest and that with Fasting and Prayer because of the great importance of the work Note 1. It is made a controversie whether 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 signifie by suffrages or by laying on hands But it is of small importance For it is certain that the Apostles forced no Elders on the People but ordained them by the Peoples choice or consent And it is certain that ordination was the Apostles Act. 2. And it s a Controversie what is here meant by Elders whether Diocesane Bishops or meer Presbyters or Lay Elders or Deacons also The Scripture calls all Church-guides and Teachers Elders and here maketh no distinction It s certain that each Church here was but one small Assembly And therefore if they will call the Pastor of one Assembly a Diocesane it s a nominal strife If they say it is because they had Power to govern a Diocess of a multitude of Churches when they were gathered 1. They must prove that power given 2. Then they were no Bishops of those Churches till they were indeed Churches 3. And its probable that about those near Cities that was not in their life time Though it be not certain that by Elders in every City is meant more than one in each City yet by the Phrase it is most probable specially considering what evidence there is of many at Corinth Antioch and Jerusalem 24. And after they had passed throughout Pisidia they came to Pamphylia 25. And when they had Preached the word in Perga they went down unto Attalia 26. And thence sailed to Antioch from whence they had been recommended to the Grace of God for the work which they fulfilled 24. They returned to Antioch in Syria not Antioch in Pisidia to give the Church an account of their success 27. And when they were come and had gathered the Church together they rehearsed all that God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles 28. And there they abode long time with the Disciples 27. Note 1 It was a Congregation and not a Diocess of a multitude of Congregations that is called the Church which they Congregated 2. They brought them the glad Tidings that the Gentiles had received the Faith Though it was in the Jews Synagogues that they preacht at least for the most part CHAP. XV. ANd certain men which came down from Judea taught the brethren and said Except ye be circumcised after the manner of Moses ye cannot be saved 1. Some Christian Jews thought and taught that Circumcision and keeping the Law of Moses is necessary to Salvation both to Jew and Gentile Christians Note 1. The sound Doctrine of Christianity was quickly corrupted be erring Teachers 2. The threatning of damnation and making error seem necessary to salvation was used to affright timerous Christians into false ways 2. When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation with them they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain other of them should go up to Jerusalem unto the Apostles and Elders about this question 2. Note To be Dissenters and Disputants against errors and tyrannical impositions upon conscience is no fault but a great duty 2. It s but a groundless fiction of some that tell us that this was an appeal to Jerusalem because it was the Metropolis of Syria and Antioch As if Metropolitan Church Power had been then settled When long after when it was devised indeed Antioch was above Jerusalem And it s as vain a fiction that this was an appeal to a general Council as if the Apostles and Elders at Jerusalem had been a general Council when none of the Bishops of the Gentile Churches were there or called thither It is notorius that it was an appeal to the Apostles taking in the Elders as those that had the certainest notice of Christs mind having conversed with him and being entrusted to teach all Nations whatever he commanded them and had the greatest measure of the spirit and also being Jews themselves were such as the Judaizing Christians had no reason to suspect or reject 3. And being
And they were more then fourty which had made this conspiracy 14. And they came to the chief priests and elders and said We have bound our selves under a great curse that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul 15. Now therefore ye with the council signifie to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him and we or ever he come near are ready to kill him 13. O what a Clergy was this that must head a confederacy of murdering Sadducees 16. And when Pauls sisters Son heard of their lying in wait he went and entred into the castle and told Paul 17. Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him and said Bring this young man unto the chief captain for he hath a certain thing to tell him 18. So he took him and brought him to the chief captain and said Paul the prisoner called me unto him and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee who hath something to say unto thee 19. Then the chief captain took him by the hand and went with him aside privately and asked him What is that thou hast to tell me 20. And he said The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council as though they would enquire somewhat him more perfectly 21. But do not thou yield unto them for there lie in wait for him of them more then fourty men which have bound themselves with an oath that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him and now are they ready looking for a promise from thee 16 Note 1. No Conspiracies are kept secret from God who can detect and frustrate them 2. No doubt but these Men that could Vow to satisfie rage did brake it rather than famish 22. So the chief captain then let the young man depart and charged him See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me 23. And he called unto him two centurions saying Make ready two hundred souldiers to go to Cesarea and horsemen threescore and ten and spearmen two hundred at the third hour of the night 24. And provide them beasts that they may set Paul on and bring him safe unto Felix the governour Note Thus God raised forces of Heathens to defend his Servant 25. And he wrote a letter after this manner 26. Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting 27. This man was taken of the Jews and should have been killed of them then came I with an army and rescued him having understood that he was a Roman 28. And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him I brought him forth into their council 29. Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds 30. And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man I sent straightway to thee and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him Farewel Note This Collonel that by a band of Soldiers rescued him judgeth him guiltless as to the Roman Law 31. Then the souldiers as it was commanded them took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris 32. On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him and returned to the castle 33. Who when they came to Cesarea and delivered the epistle to the governour presented Paul also before him 34. And when the governour had read the letter he asked of what province he was And when he understood that he was of Cilicia 35. I will hear thee said he when thine accusers are also come And he commanded him to be kept in Herods judgment-hall 35. Note A place called Herods Hall Not that he was there Thus God carryed on Paul toward Rome to fulfil his Will and Work CHAP. XXIV ANd after five days Ananias the high Priest descended with the Elders and with a certain orator named Tertullus who informed the Governour against Paul 1. Note Tertullus was the malignant Lawyer or Orator who was to plead their charge against Paul if not of mere ma●ice at least for his Fee The Accusation is given in and hotly prosecuted by the High Priest and Elders Dr. Hummond thought that the word Elders in the Christian Church never signifyed any but Bishops such as we now call Diocesane And it is undoubted that the Church borrowed that Title from the Jews Elders and therefore meant some similitude of Offices allowing the difference of materials and Law And then it would follow that the Jews Elders that made their Council were the Jewish Bishops of several distant Cities gathered together at Jerusalem And so that it was the Jews Archbishop and all the Bishops under him that were these malignant Diabolica Accusers and Persecutors But the Jewish Elders were not such City Bishops but a Conjunction of Laymen and Priests in a supreme Council at Jerusalem and inferior Councils in Cities where were Synagogues 2. And when he was called forth Tertullus began to accuse him saying Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence 3. We accept it always and in all places most noble Felix vvith all thankfulness 2 3. To win the Judge by flattery hath ever by false Accusers been taken for the surest way for success 4. Notwithstanding that I be not further tedious unto thee I pray thee that thou vvouldest hear us of thy clemency a fevv words 5. For vve have found this man a pestilent fellovv and a mover of sedition among all the Jevvs throughout all the world and a ringleader of the Sect of the Nazarene 5. We have found this Man a very plague c. Note This part of the Accusation is 1. In general that he was a very walking Pestilence O what Diabolism is it to judge thus of the Preachers of Love and Mercy and Salvation 2. Particularly 1. a mover of Sedition among all the Jews through the Roman Empire So Christian Reformation must be called Sedition to stir up Rulers against it as Defenders of the common Peace And this to Faelix was a Potent argument for he had been put to conquer and destroy one Eleazar that came out of Egypt as a pretended Prophet and gathered an Army of Seditious Cut throats that endangered the Peace 2. The second accusation was that he was a Leader of a Sect or Schism calling the Christians Nazarens in scorn from Nazareth where Christ dwelt 6. Who also hath gone about to profane the Temple vvhom vve took and would have judged according to our law 6. The third part of the Accusation was prophaning the Tepmle Note Would not these infidels be thought Holy Men They were zealous for Temple Law and Ceremonies against Christianity Holiness Innocency and the lives of the best of Men. 7. But the cheif Captain
in vain 1 2. Fourteen years after my Conversion I went again to Jerusalem c. and told them what Doctrine I preached and with what sucess But severally and privately to the eminent Apostles that avoiding offence both of Jews and Gentiles I might not frustrate my Labours to either of them 3. But neither Titus who was with me being a Greek was compelled to be circumcised 4. And that because of false brethren unawares brought in who came in privily to spie out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus that they might bring us into bondage 3 4. And I would not yield that Titus should be circumcised because some false Brethren crept in to take advantage of the Liberty I used in compliance with the Jews to take occasion by it to bring us into bondage to the Mosaick Law and turn our Liberty into Necessity and to plead that Conformity to it is our Duty because in some Degree and Case we yielded to it as lawful at the present to avoid a greater hurt 5. To whom we gave place by subjection no not for an hour that the truth of the gospel might continue with you 5. Note That an outward Act of Compliance which in some Cases may be lawful must not be done when it will strengthen Church-Tyrants and Deceivers who by making it necessary would turn Christian Liberty into Bondage 6. But of these who seemed to be somewhat whatsoever they were it maketh no matter to me God accepteth no mans person for they who seemed to be somewhat in conferrence added nothing to me But even Peter James and John who were the Chief Men and of Reputation God tieth not his Grace to the Dignity of Mens Persons therefore my Case dependeth not on their Worth I say in Conference they added nothing to me much less taught me any other Gospel than I had learned of Christ nor found me faulty or defective in my Doctrine 7. But contrariwise when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter 8. For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the Apostleship of the circumcision the same was mighty in me towards the Gentiles 9. And when James Cephas and John who seemed to be pillars perceived the grace that was given unto me they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship that we should go unto the heathen and they unto the circumcision 7 8 9. But they being satisfied that I was sent to preach to the Gentiles as Peter was to the Jews and that God wrought powerfully in me for the Conversion of the Gentiles as he did in Peter for the Conversion of the Jews even by many Miracles these who are justly reputed Pillars perceiving Gods Grace agreed to take me and Barnabas for their Fellow-labourers and that we should preach to the Heathen and they to the Jews Note That Dr. Hammond thus Paraphraseth it into what City either of us entred and so constitute several Congregations in each City of Jews and Gentiles And he with Grotius say That the two Witnesses Rev. 11. are the Bishops and Churches of these two sorts at Jerusalem If so Cities had then more Bishops and Churches than one 10. Onely they would that we should remember the poor the same which I also was forward to do 10. That we should make Collections in the Gentiles Churches for the Christian Jews Note That besides the extraordinary Famine the Jews were generally poorer than the Gentiles 1. Living in a poor and narrow Country 2. And having at first sold and given their Lands to the Common Stock 11. But when Peter was come to Antioch I withstood him to the face because he was to be blamed 11. I withstood him Face to Face because he was blamed or to be blamed as dissembling 12. For before that certain came from James he did eat with the Gentiles but when they were come he withdrew and separated himself fearing them which were of the circumcision 13. And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation 12 13. Note 1. That it appeareth by this that it was then the ordinary Practice of the Apostles and Christians at Jerusalem to observe the Law of Moses though they absolved the Gentiles from it 2. That Peter did this to avoid the Displeasure and Censure of the Jewish Christians in compliance with their Weakness which is a lawful End 3. That his Fault lay in letting this weigh down a far greater Evil on the other side viz. the danger of bringing the Gentiles under the Law of Moses by making it seem necessary This Case is much like as if some doubtful thing should by Canon or Custom be imposed on Christians and one Party saith You may do it and another saith You must do it or you sin And they that say we may though they know it be unnecessary for fear of displeasing the Imposers separate from the Refusers and forbear Communion with them and thereby harden them in their Errour and would ensnare the rest 14. But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel I said unto Peter before them all If thou being a Jew livest after the manner of Gentiles and not as do the Jews why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews 14. When I saw that this Cause was not according to the plain simplicity of the Gospel nor answered the ends of our Preaching but was the way to seduce the Gentiles to Judaism I said to Peter before all because the Case concerned all seeing thy own Practice before the Jews came sheweth that thou thinkest not that the Gentiles are bound to live as the Jews do after Moses's Law why dost thou now seem to tell them the contrary by thy contrary Practices as if Judaizing were necessary to them 15 16. We who are Jews by nature and not sinners of the Gentiles knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by the faith of Jesus Christ even we have believed in Jesus Christ that we might be justified by the faith of Christ and not by the works of the law for by works of the law shall no flesh be justified 15 16. We our selves who are Jews by birth and not the Seed of Heathen Idolaters yet knowing that it is not by the works of the Law but by Faith in Christ that we must be justified have become Christians that we might be justified by this and not by the Works of the Law which none are justified by And shall our Practice now seem to intimate the contrary and gainsay our Faith 17. But if while we seek to be justified by Christ we our selves also are found sinners is therefore Christ the minister of sin God forbid 17. For if you feign us to be sinners and guilty of Gentilism because we communicate with the Uncircumcised you hereby would make
by Office the Care of gathering many Churches and then taking care of their Preservation and Increase by urging the Doctrine and Commands of Christ and Ordaining Bishops over particular Churches Episcopos gregis by their own and the Flocks consent and not otherwise and then exhorting such Pastors and Churches on just occasions to do their Duties And who can be against such Archbishops But some that now feign the Idea of a Bishop to be one that hath many score or Hundred Churches under him which have no Bishop but himself and one that is set over them without their consent and that ruleth them by force of the adjoyned Sword Imprisonment or Ruine are ready to Dream that Timothy and Titus were such Bishops Doubtless every City or Corporation where were Christians had then a Church at least and every Church a B●shop at least And whether it was Timothy or another Ephesus was not without Tho it 's true that we find him so constantly with Paul almost every where where he was that it 's hard to believe that he was very long at Ephesus 2. Note That Churches are in danger of Corruption by other Doctrines than those delivered by the Apostles And their Doctrines were so sufficient that no other should be taught 3. Though some think it is still the Gnosticks that are here described by Fables and Genealogies its most like to be all the Judaisers And though Genealogies be part of Scripture it 's perverseness to make too great a stir about them and to turn Religion into endless Questions and divert from matter of Faith in which our Edification chiefly doth consist Multitudes sin by too much stir about lesser Scripture Verities when by wrangling or long study it hindreth them from greater 5. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart and of a good conscience and of faith unfeigned 15. The Holy Scripture is as a compleat Body which hath its Accidents and Ornaments as well as Essential and Integral Parts as Hair Nails Colour c. But it is the end that is the chief part and must be preferred And the end of all Christ's Doctrine and Law is Charity or to bring Mens Souls to the love of God and Man and Goodness as its very Nature And the grand means to this are 1. A Heart purified by Gods Spirit 2. A good Conscience not guilty of reigning sin and justified from the guilt of former sin and present Infirmity by Christ 3. And unfeigned Faith in Christ by which we are united to him and have our part in the foresaid benefits And this is the Sum of True Christian Religion in few Words which is more profitably insisted on than Jangling Controversies 6. From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling 7. Desiring to be teachers of the law understanding neither what they say not whereof they affirm 6 7. And some that have roved from this Mark not placing Religion finally in Love to be promoted aforesaid have turned aside to Vain Jangling or Vain Chat as if Religion lay in being Doctors of Moses's Law when as they understand not what they say themselves nor what the things are which they pretend to teach Note 1. They that shoot not at this mark as 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 signifieth and place not Religion as aforesaid have ever since corrupted it by Vain Jangling though not about the same Subjects Some setting the Churches together by the Ears about unnecessary curious Notions concerning the person of Christ or concerning Gods Decrees and Concourse and some about the Clergies Universal Domination and about their Canon Law worse than was that of Moses and their Dunghil of Corruptions and ensnaring Ceremonies and some about quibling Notions concerning Justification Faith and Works Satan hath Religious Diversions for them that are above Sensuality And Ignorant-confidence with rage is the usual Character of all such 8. But we know that the law is good if a man use it lawfully 8. We praise the Law as well as they It is Gods Law and therefore good if lawfully used which is to lead Men to Christ and typifie Spiritual things to come and to condemn and restrain sin but not to justifie Men instead of Grace nor to be imposed on the Gentiles or continued when a better doth displace it 9. Knowing this that the law is not made for a righteous man but for the lawless and disobedient for the ungodly and for sinners for unholy and profane for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers for man-slayers 10. For whoremongers for them that defile themselves with mankind for men-stealers for liars for perjured persons and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine 11. According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust 9 10 11. It must be foreknown 1. That the World was not Lawless that had not Moses's Law They had the Law of Nature and the common Law of Grace which was given to Mankind after the fall And Christ hath now brought us the Holy Spiritual Law of Grace in the most perfect edition So that sin is condemned where Moses's Law is not received or known 2. That Moses's Laws as such were all Political for the Government of that Republick even the Ten Commandments and had Penalties to be executed by Men annexed as an essential part of it Now of this Law saith Paul It was not made with these Penalties either to bridle or to punish them that without it were Righteous Men that is Who were obedient to the Law of Nature and of Grace and whose Hearts were ruled with the love of Righteousness and needed not to be frightened to it by Corporal Penalties much less for us Christians who have Christs Law of Grace and are Sanctified by his Spirit writing it in our Hearts by Love of Goodness But God knowing the corruption of Mans Heart did make it for the Israelites to restrain them by fear from living like Lawless Disobedient Men c. and to punish them by the Magistrate who were ungodly sinners unholy profane murtherers c. which the Gospel and Christs Law which I preach is as much against as Moses's Law and more powerfully overcometh So that we that have better even Christs Law without us need not the continuance of Moses's Law 12. And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who hath enabled me for that he counted me faithful putting me into the ministry 12. Note It is a great mercy to be entrusted with the Ministry of the Gospel with Ability and Faithfulness 13. Who was before a blasphemer and a persecutor and injurious But I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief 13. Note 1. The great Mercy of God to great sinners even Persecutors and Blasphemers may be converted 2. That God giveth the greatest Mercy without previous merit 3. The word because here meaneth not that Ignorance was a proper cause of Gods Mercy But that it made
1. That Titus is not said to be settled in Crete as their fixed Bishop but left there in his Travels to settle fixed Bishops there The Scriptures tell us that Timothy Titus were Itinerant Evangelists that went about where Paul sent them to plant and settle Churches But the plain truth is that Apostles and such Evangelists as these where-ever they came had as great Authority as any meer Bishops and more and that they stayed in some Countrys longer than in others to settle the Churches and that the Churches after their Age thought it an honour to be their Charge and so called them their Bishops In which sense one Apostle might have twenty or forty Bishopricks as he planted and settled so many Churches But none of them were Bishops fixed and confined to one Church as those usually called Bishops then were so that to controvert whether Peter Paul Timothy Titus Luke c. were Bishops is a meer ignorant strife de nomine about the name while we are or easily may be agreed of the thing what work for those Churches they performed They were Bishops eminenter transient from Church to Church but he degradeth them that feigneth them affixed to any one as their sole and proper Flock 2. Note further That Titus ordaining Elders that is Bishops as Dr. Hammond noteth implieth the peoples consent for Titus had no forcing power 3. That Crete is said to have an hundred Cities in it being but a small Island and so must have an hundred Bishops if every City had one But doubtless Paul meaneth every City that had Christians in it enough to be a Church 4. That by 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 is meant any big Town such as our Corporations are and 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 oppidatim is meant from Town to Town where there is matter for a Church And Paul never meant by this to confine Bishops to Cities and forbid them to Villages but he nameth Cities or Towns because then no other places had Christians enow for a Church 5. Dr. Hammond thinks that these Bishops then were only the single Pastors of single Congregations having no Sub-Presbyters but Deacons 6. The ordering of things wanting was not adding to their Faith and Religion or making them a Book of Canons but seeing them reduced to the obedient and orderly practice of that which the Apostles every where taught and settled 6. If any be blameless the husband of one wife having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly 6. Note If God bless not the Education of his own Children 1. The Church would doubt of his Fidelity or whether God will bless his greater undertaking 2. And his Family would be a scandal to Religion 7. For a Bishop must be blameless as the steward of God not self-willed not soon angry not given to wine no striker not given to filthy lucre 7. Note That the same man is called a Bishop here who was called an Elder v. 5. If then they were distinct Offices Paul neglected to describe one of them which is not credible when he describeth Deacons Deaconesses Dr. Hammond confesseth that there were in Scripture-times no Subject-Presbyters save Bishops that were under the Apostolick Order but he thinks that Bishops had power from the Apostles to institute another Order of Presbyters under them afterwards But 1. Where is there any proof of that Must Church-Government cast out all Ministers who believe not such an unproved Assertion 2. It 's thus disproved Paul giveth Timothy and Titus sufficient Instructions what Officers to Ordain in the Church which Canons were to be a Guide to all after-Ages But Paul gave them no Instruction or Canon for the Instituting of any New Order between Bishops or Elders and Deacons Therefore it is not credible that any such power was then given to other Bishops which he gave not to Timothy and Titus But as to others who say that the Apostles and Evangelists were then the only Bishops I answer de re we confess that these had power to go about to gather and settle Churches and de nomine whether such may be called Bishops let them quarrel that have nothing else to do But besides them every Town or Church had then their own fixed Bishop one or more and Deacons If Diocesans or Metropolitans will be Successors of the Itinerant Apostles and Evangelists or General Bishops let them restore to every Church their particular proper Bishops and not make Pastors that have not the power of the Keys As for them that say Paul includeth both Orders under the same names Bishops and Presbyters I answer Paul useth not only the same name but the same description and so the Order or Office also must be the same and both Name and Thing the same 2. Bishops are God's Stewards entrusted to govern by his Law and not Lords of his Church or of their Faith 3. By self-willed is meant self-conceited proud men that must be pleased and have their own will and cannot become all things lawful to all men for their good but will silence and excommunicate and reproach those that are most careful to do God's will if they do but cross their Wills and Canons 4. Not soon angry rather an angry wrathful man The rest see on 1 Tim. 3. 8. But a lover of hospitality a lover of good men sober just holy temperate 8. But one that loveth to entertain men in his house a lover of goodness and good men of a sound and sober mind righteous holy as devoted to God continent and abstemious 9. Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers 9. Faithfully holding fast the word of Faith even that which we have preacht and taught from Christ that so he may be able to use sound doctrine both in Exhortation and in Confutation of Opposers 10. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers specially they of the circumcision 11. Whose mouths must be stopped who subvert whole houses teaching things which they ought not for filthy lucres sake 10 11. For there are many disorderly and unruly foolish vain talkers deceivers of mens Judgments specially those Jewish corrupt Christians before oft described Note That here it appeareth whom Paul meaneth in his Invectives in many Epistles even those mentioned Acts 15. that would have made Christianity but a Supplement to Moses Law and not Gnosticks only or chiefly Ebion and Cerinthus were of the worser degenerate sort of them and the Nicolaitans next 2 Note That Paul meaneth not stopping the Seducers mouths by force but by confutation by the word For Titus had no power of the Sword 3 Note That so great is the weakness and unstedfastness of many Christians that whole housholds may be subverted by the most gross deceivers If the Apostles Converts were such no wonder if ours be so 12 13. One of themselves even a prophet of their own said The Cretians are
and not the Holy Ghost's seven Graces that is here meant is after manifested 2. Why they are called Seven some say is because seven goeth for a number of perfection whence the Seven Planets the seven days of the week c. But this is but mens conceit and no part of God's Word Nor can we prove hence that God hath set seven Angels above all the rest But all that we can know of it is that John being commanded to write to seven Churches numbereth the Guardian Angels accordingly from their Charges 3. This is no Prayer to these Angels but a notice that God's Mercies are communicated to those Churches by their Ministry and this message sent by them from Christ The naming of the seven Spirits before Christ is no preferring them as above him But Christ is after named becausse much more is to be said there of him together 5. Why seven Churches only are named men variously conjecture some say because they are spoken of prophetically as in their names seven states of the Universal Church or its notable parts to the end are signified But this being impossible to be proved is rather to pretend another Revelation than to expound this Others say that it being only the Pro-Consular Asia that John wrote to these seven being the Metropolitan City-Churches did comprehend all the rest as parts under them But 1. T●is also is but a Humane Imagination without any proof 2. If they mean that these were then made Ecclesiastical Metropolis's it 's a fiction without and against Historical evidence which tells us of a far later date of Metropolitical Churches 3. If they mean that they were Metropolis's only in a Civil sense and that the Apostles in planting Churches there purposed or ordained that afterwards Church-Power should follow the Order of the Seats of Civil Power I answer 1. That this is a crude unproved Assertion and therefore of no authority or credit 2. And it 's known that it was four hundred years after that this was decreed by a Council as a new thing 3. And this was so far from being Apostolical that it confounded the Church setting in superiority the worst men that could but get into a Metropolis and putting all Bishops and Churches at present under the Power of the People and Pr●sbyters o● one City which was a Metropolis and chose their own Bishop Yea Dr. Hammond thought that then no B●s●op had any Presbyters under him and so there w●re n●ne but his People to chuse him for the Neigh●●ur ●ishops did not though they ordained him Yea it turneth Churches upside down at the will of every Emperour Heathen Infidel or Christian who can enfranchise or disfranchise Cities at his pleasure 4. And there is no proof that these seven were all and only the Civil Metropolitical Cities of Asia 3. Both these then being mens unproved Imaginations yea and unlikely it remaineth that these seven Churches were most eminent in Asia both for greatness and those tryals vertues and faults which Christ was pleased to note as the occasion of this message And if he see cause to send a message to seven it belongs not to us to ask him why he sendeth to no more 5. And from Jesus Christ who is the faithful witness and the first begotten of the dead and the prince of the Kings of the earth 5. Note 1. By faithful witness is meant the faithful and certain Messenger and revealer of Gods will to man 2. By first begotten is meant both the Greatest and most Excellent and the first in order and causality who Rising from the dead is the cause that we shall Rise 3. He is Prince of the Kings of the Earth not only as Greater than all Kings but as over them all in power by whom they reign and who d●th dispose of all Eph. 2.23 Matth. 28.19 Joh. 17.2 Joh. 13 3. Joh. 5.22 Eph. 1.21 Col. 1.15 16 17. Phil. 2.9 10 11. 5. Unto him that loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood 6. And hath made us Kings and priests unto God and his Father to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever Amen 5.6 To this Glorious Lord and Saviour who shewed his wonderful Love to us by his giving up himself a sacrifice for our sins that the Merit of his Blood might cleanse us from guilt and sin and justify us from it before God and who hath chosen and sanctified us and made us by his Grace a peculiar holy People to God dignified in our Relation to Christ as Kings in honour and brought us near to God like cons●crated Priests to offer him our daily service acceptable through Christ To him I say shall be Glory and Dominion for ever in the acknowledgement whereof let all his Saints rejoice 7. Behold he cometh with clouds and every eye shall see him and they also which pierced him and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him even so Amen 7. I have oft before enquired whether this Coming of Christ be 1. his Coming by the Roman Armies to destroy Jerusalem 2. Or his setting up Christianity in the World and destroying Heathenism 3. Or his Coming at last in Glory The matter is true as to all the three But the text seemeth most strained by the first exposition and least by the last Every way he is dreadful to his enemies But every eye seeth him not the first way nor did the destroyed Jews acknowledge it to be by him 8. I am Alpha and Omega the beginning and the ending saith the Lord which is and which was and which is to come the Almighty 8. I am everlasting before all Worlds and without end and he who hath Power over all Note These words seem to be the words of Christ and not of God the Father And with the sixth verse which ascribeth to him everlasting Glory and dominion do seem plainly to speak the Godhead of Christ 9. I John who also am your brother and companion in tribulation and in the Kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ was in the isle that is called Patmos for the word of God and for the testimony of Jesus Christ 9. I John who was your brother and companion undergo the like sufferings as you do in the same belief and subjection to Christ in his Kingdom and in Patient enduring for his sake was in the Isle of Patmos whi●her I was banished for my Testimony and preaching the faith of Christ 10. I was in the spirit on the Lords day and heard behind me a great voice as of a trumpet 10. I was there in a transporting rapture by the Spirit of God on the first day of the week called by the Church The Lords day observed in commemoration of his Resurrection And I heard a voice call to me as lowd as a trumpet Note 1. The vain cav●l of those that deny the Lords day here to mean the Christians day of holy worship even the first of the week I have fully confuted in
them nor any heat 15 16. Note It is not the least difficulty in this Book to know when it speaketh really of what is done in Heaven and when of what is done on Earth and when of both This Text seemeth to speak chiefly of what is really done in Heaven To expound it only of the Liberty that came to the Christians after the Destruction of Jerusalem is improbable when the ten Persecutions succeeded To expound it of the Advancement of the Church by Constantine must make it to speak only of the Species of Christians that formerly suffered and of no individual persons but those that were then alive and is hardly believed by them that believe the reported Voice from Heaven Hodié venenum funditur in Ecclesiam and that know how quickly Papacy and Church-Corruption sprang out of it And yet to exclude all inferior Church-mercies from this Vision seemeth also unsafe 17. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes 17. The Churches on Earth shall have some Times of quiet Assembling and learning of Christ and his Ministers the pure Word of Life and Religion shall flourish and God shall give them some Respite and Intermission or Ease from Persecution under Vespasian and Titus But this is but a small Fore-tast of the heavenly Glory wherein these words shall be fulfilled where indeed they shall go out of God's Temple no more and shall have all Tears wiped away CHAP. VIII 1. ANd when he had opened the seventh seal there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour 1. There was a little space after the opening of the seventh Seal before I saw or heard the Revelation of it 2. And I saw the seven angels which stood before God and to them were given seven trumpets 2. Seven Angels were appointed to publish as by Trumpet the Judgments following Some think that the Temple-Worship is here described where the people without prayed in silence while the Priest within officiated and the Trumpets sounded Which the following words favour 3. And another angel came and stood at the altar having a golden censer and there was given unto him much incense that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne 3. Another Angel represented the High Priest whose Office was to offer Incense at the Altar and to offer up Prayers for the People To which use he had a Golden Censer and a Golden Altar to shew the honour of the Christian Ministry and Worship which is all accepted through Christ's Intercession 4. And the smoke of the incense which came with the prayers of the saints ascended up before God out of the angel's hand 4. And God received as grateful the Prayers of his People as offered by the Ministers and by Christ 5. And the angel took the censer and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the earth and there were voices and thundrings and lightnings and an earthquake 5. And upon the Acceptance of the Saints Prayers followed the kindling of God's avenging Judgments on the Earth 6. And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound 6. Then did the Messengers of God's Judgments prepare to publish or sound them forth 7. The first angel sounded and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood and they were cast upon the earth and the third part of trees was burnt up and all green grass was burnt up 7. And the Judgment published by the first Angel began with Destruction on the Countries such as usually accompany Wars which lay wast Land and Houses 8. And the second angel sounded and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea and the third part of the sea became blood 9. And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea and had life died and the third part of the ships were destroyed 8 9. That no place should escape the next degree of Judgment was represented by a Mountain of Fire cast into the Sea which turned the third part of the Sea into Blood c. signifying increased Wars and Bloodshed by Sea and Land The particular Signification Expositors are utterly disagreed in Dr. H. taketh it for the Bloodshed by Insurrections in Galilee Others for the Barbarians ruining the Roman Empire Others for Heresies in the Church Others for the Bishops Strife for Superiority 10. And the third angel sounded and there fell a great star from heaven burning as it were a lamp and it fell upon the third part of the rivers and upon the fountains of waters 11. And the name of the star is called wormwood and the third part of the waters became wormwood and many men died of the waters because they were made bitter 10 11. And next the Jugdment was the infecting of the Rivers and Waters with mortal Bitterness by a Star from Heaven that was mortally bitter falling into them This signifieth the further extensive progress of the Punishment Some take this for the Fall of a great Captain of the Jews And some for one of their false seducing Prophets And some for the Fall of the Western Empire And some for Arrius Some for Pelagius Some for Mahomet and some for Hereticks in general 12. And the fourth angel sounded and the third part of the sun was smitten and the third part of the moon and the third part of the stars so as the third part of them was darkned and the day shone not for a third part of it and the night likewise 12. On the Sounding of the fourth Angel the progress of the Judgment was represented to me as the darkning of the third part of th Sun Moon and Stars signifying the fall of some great Powers Ecclesiastical or Civil Some expound it of Vespasians's destroying a third part of the Cities of Judea Some of the beginning of the Siege of Jerusalem Some of Totila's sacking of Rome Some of the Corruption of Prelacy before Popery Some of Arrianism Some of the general Corruption of the Church by Popery Lira takes the four Angels to be the four Hereticks as he doth the four Beasts to be the four Patriarchs 13. And I beheld and heard an angel flying thorow the midst of heaven saying with a loud voice Wo wo wo to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels which are yet to sound 13. This punishment extended but to a third part But I heard an Angel flying in the midst of Heaven lowdly crying wo wo wo for the greater plagues that were yet to some Some expound this out of Josephus of one Jesus Son of Ananias that for many years before the siege went about pronouncing this wo Others divers other waies CHAP. IX 1 ANd the fifth angel sounded and I saw a
heaven having great power and the earth was lightned with his glory 1. The Fall of Rome is so great a work that it was foreshewed me as by an Angel of wondrous Glory Those that tell us that this Angel was an eminent preacher and such other particularities of filling the earth with his Glory go further than my knowledge goeth 2. And he cried mightily with a strong voice saying Babylon the great is fallen is fallen and is become the habitation of devils and the hold of every foul Spirit and a cage of every unclean and hatefull bird 2. The Language of those times was to call deferred ruined places where no man dwelt the places haunted by Devils and Goblins and Satyrs and Owls and Serpents So that this signifieth Desolation And the Jews then thinking that as Babylon that before captivated them is destroyed so the very City of Rome would be the Prophecy calleth the Destruction of the Pagan Empire and Idolatry with all its retinue of Literate upholders by the name and titles of the Destruction of the City For it was not Babylon as a City nor quâ Roma as this City nor as a Rich and Great City But as the Great Idolatrous Power which captivated and persecuted the Church Therefore it is destroyed not as a Great or Rich City but as Babylon And so it is desolate Some think that this is spoken of it as when Rome was burnt in part by Totilas and the remnant of Pagans destroyed by Alaricus That 's more than I can prove But it being the Pagan Empire that captivated the Church that made it Babylon I think Babylon fell when that fell though many Pagans did survive 3. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies 3. For their Power and Learning have spred the poyson or drunkenness of their Idolatry to all nations and the Kings of the earth have been encouraged in the guilt and her wealth and grandeur have promoted all pride and sensuality in the nations that have traded with her or depended on her Others say It is the sale of pardons indulgences and Ceremonies and Church-preferments that are her Merchandize and delicacies 4. And I heard another voice from heaven saying Come out of her my people that ye be not partakers of her sins and that ye receive not of her plagues 5. For her sins have reached unto heaven and God hath remembred her iniquities 4 5. That is Away from Idolatrous Pagan Rome as Lot fled from Sodom if you love your lives and Souls avoid all partaking in her sins Eat not things offered to idols imitate them not and comply not with them in any act of Idolatry or other sin For the time of her destruction is at hand and you may suffer with her if you sin with her and fly not from her Or Come out from Popery and partake not of the sin lest you partake of the plagues Here say some Protestants we answer the question Where was your Church before Luther And why do you separate from Popery To the first say they our Church was in Babylon where God bore with it till he call'd it out To the second God commanded us to come out No doubt we must partake of no mens sins 6. Reward her even as she rewarded you and double unto her double according to her works in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double 6. God who is her Judge will have you lay doubly more on her than she laid on you by persecution And this is no injustice it being for sin against him and not only as against you This giveth the reason of Gods execution by Constantine but alloweth no private men to take arms against Government on pretence of revenging the injuries of the Church 7. How much she hath glorified her self and lived deliciously so much torment and sorrow give her for she saith in her heart I sit a queen and am no widdow and shall see no sorrow 7. The sins of Sodom were pride fullness idleness and unmercifulness And Pagan Rome grown proud and sensual by power and wealth shall now suffer debasement and dejection Or Rome Papal that saith I am the successor of Peter and the mother of all Churches shall be dejected and destroyed for her pride and cruelty 8. Therefore shall her plagues come in one day death and mourning and famine and she shall be utterly burnt with fire for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her 8. The Fall of the Pagan Empire shall be sudden and terrible like the burning of a City Or say others The remnant of Pagans shall be burnt out of Christian Rome by Alaricus c. Say others Papal Rome shall be cast down Say others burnt But it is not like if the City were burnt but some would rebuil'd it as we did London 9. And the kings of the earth who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her shall bewail her and lament for her when they shall see the smoke of her burning 10. Standing afar off for the fear of her torment saying Alas alas that great city Babylon that mighty city for in one hour is thy judgment come 9. The Nations that were her companions in Idolary shall bewail her great and sudden fall Obj. Papal Rome falls not suddenly Ans We know not what it may do yet But it 's certain Pagan Rome did 11. And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her for no man buyeth her merchandise any more 12. The merchandise of gold and silver and precious stones and of pearls and fine linnen and purple and silk and scarlet and all thynewood and all manner vessels of Ivory and all manner vessels of most precious wood and of brass and iron and marble 13. And cinnamon and odours and ointments and frankincense and wine and oyl and fine flower and wheat and beasts and sheep and horses and chariots slaves and souls of men 11 12 13. The Pride and Greatness of Rome bought up all that many Countries could bring in of all sorts for necessity and delight and they fed the Pagan Idolatry and Tyranny Others apply it to Papal Pardons Offices and Preferments But these were rather bought at Rome than sold thither By Souls of Men some understand Pagan Romes Slaves some their Soul-murdering Idolatry and some Papal Soul-murders 14. And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee and thou shalt and them no more at all 15. The merchants of these things which were made rich by her shall stand afar off for the tear of her torment weeping and wailing 16. And saying Alas alas that great city that was clothed in fine linnen and purple and scarlet and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls 17.
heard and how shall they hear without a preacher and how shall they Preach unless they be sent And these expositors tell us not that Preachers shall be sent to the scattered Jews into all Turkish and Papists Lands to learn the Languages and convert them at once It is worth the Readers perusal c. 7. p. 217. how he justly derideth Bellarmine as supposing that Antichrist will put down Gods Worship in all the Earth telling him that he hath an hundred forty eight Thousand Thousand times five hundred fifty Thousand nine hundred and nine Miles to travel to do it and so much have Universal Popes and Councils to take charge of which will hardly be done in three years and a half And yet killing mens Souls is a less work than to make them alive It s doleful to think what Satan hath gained by corrupting the Church by wicked Bishops making that his Game when Pagan Power fell partly by tempting in Worldly wicked men by Wealth and Honour and partly by making Ungodly Princes the choosers of Bishops and Ungodly Patrons the choosers of Priests and when men ruled by Satan choose them Satan himself oft chooseth them Who by their wickedness Malignity and Persecuting the best men have tempted those Christians who most hate sin to call almost all the Church Antichristian and fly from it as worse than Pagan Rome and to lose much of their Love to all that are called by such abhorred names Had the Pastors of the Church bin all Holy Humble men of Love and not men of Wickedness and Blood their Power and Interest would have bin the Joy of Pious men But enough of that side II. On the other side they that say the contrary thus express their sense 1. The first Beast is the Roman Imperial and Military Power not as such but as the Grand Power of Idolatry first and next as the Captivator and Persecutor of the Christian Church of Jews and Gentiles 2. The Image of the Beast is both the Idol Statues Images and Altars of their Idol Gods and of themselves both which by their Laws were to be worshipped with Sacrifices and other acts of Idolatry 3. The second Beast is the Senate with all the Literate Idolaters and Flatterers Orators Philosophers Priests Poets Comedians Augurs c. as Learned defenders of Idolatry and repro●chers and Enemies of Christianity 4. The name of the Beast was the name of the Idol God whom they were to Worship and of the Idolized Emperours as called Divi and Dii and honoured by Altars and Sacrifices 5. The Mark was a Stigma or Badge then usually received by Servants and Souldiers and Votaries as an obliging mark of subjection 6. The number of the name was some abbreviating Letters part of the mark and here proved to be numeral though at this distance we cannot say what they were nor whether still the same 7. Receiving the mark is profest consent and usually by such a Badge 8. The Woman Whore was the City of Rome not meerly as a City or as Rome or as Rich or as Powerful but as Idolatrous and captivating the Church 9. The Witnesses were the Jew and Gentile Christian Teachers Prophets Miracle-workers and Martyrs that had the spirit as the first Christians had for signal Testimony to the Gospel Miracles long continuing in some degree These are their expositions Their Reasons they begin first of the Whore or the seat of the Beast which they say must needs be Pagan Rome 1. Because it was expresly said by the Angel who purposely explained it to be the great City which ruleth over the Kings of the Earth 1. Not a Church which is under Princes but properly a City 2. Not only pretenders to a Power of Church Keys but proper Rulers by Power of Armes 3. Not only over the Church oft called Heaven but over the Kings of the Earth noting those without 4. Not shall Rule but doth Rule as a visible note by which John might know the Whore This being so plain that only violence can obscure it may be say they a Key to all the rest 2. Ch. 17.2 The Kings of the Earth had at that time committed Fornication with her and the Inhabitants of the Earth were then drunken with the Wine of her Fornication else it could not be to John a notifying mark But the Papacy was not of many hundred years after in being 3. John was brought into the Wilderness to see it which was the then Persecuted State of the Church And it was to comfort him and that Church in hope of a near Deliverance for they were things that must shortly be done 4. Her name notifyeth her Babylon the great the Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth Babylon captivating the Christians as old Babylon did the Jews the great as then being to whom the Papal Power was small The Mother or Nurse and Upholder of the most Abominable Idolatry and Wickedness not in the Church but of the Earth by Power and Learning upholding the Worship of Sun Moon Stars and Men of Jupiter Saturn Sol Mars Mercury Pallas Venus Neptune and numberless Idols by Paul called Devils and the wickedness of life described by Paul Rom. 1. Eph. 4.18 c. 5. The names of Blasphemy were hers reproaching Jews and Christians with scorn and ascribing Gods names and works to these their Idols and to Men. 6. The vast Riches and Luxury of her described punctually agree with Pagan Rome 7. She was then drunk with the Blood of Prophets and Martyrs which the Pope then was not The Angels undertaking to open the Mystery must not be thought rather to obscure it 8. She had been a Persecutor of both Jew and Gentile Christians who both gave God Thanks for her fall 9. The Whore sat on seven Mountains But so did not the Papal Civil Empire 10. The assistant Kings had not received Regal Power being but as Servants to the Beast and the Whore But Popish Kings are Kings indeed 11. They were unanimous in upholding the Whore But Popish Kingdoms long strove against the Papal Power 12. They fought against Christianity till they were conquered v. 14. But so did not many Popish Kingdomes 13. People multitudes and Nations more notifie Pagan Rome than Papal 14. C. 18. They were to reward her double as she had used them But so we must not do by Papists 15. The Kings of the Earth lament her fall But the more the Pope fall the more they rejoice except the House of Austria and a few more 16. Her fall cometh suddenly as in an hour but the Pope standeth yet after 150 years beginning to fall Moreover about the Beast they say 1. It is said he was and is not and yet is But the Papacy was not then nor is after it was not 2. The seven Heads of the Beast had the name of Blasphemy But if the heads were the seven species of Government the name of Papal Blasphemy was not on six of them at least but only of
men of their own company of Antioch with Paul and Barnabas namely Judas surnamed Barsabas and Silas chief men among the brethren 22. Though the Apostles were the infallible Deciders the Elders and the whole Church were unanimous Consenters and to shew the necessity of concord and that even infallible and miraculous Teachers yet guide only Volunteers They sent some of their own Company of the College that guided the Church at Jerusalem or as Doctor Hammond thinketh Bishops of some single Congregations in Judea that contending parties might not be the only reporters of their sentence 23. And wrote Letters by them after this manner The Apostles and Elders and brethren send greeting unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and and Cilicia 24. Forasmuch as we have heard that certain which went out from us have troubled you with words subverting your souls saying ye must be circumcised and keep the law to whom we gave no such commandment 23 24. Note 1. If False Teachers pretended Apostolick Authority or mission when they were neer them no wonder if they do it now when they are not so ehsily confutted 2. Tyrannical impositions on Conscience do but trouble the Church and subvert Souls by pious pretences 25. It seemed good unto us being assembled with one accord to send chosen men unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul 26. Men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ 27. We have sent therefore Judas and Silas who shall also tell you the same things by mouth 25. Thus far their Letters are Credential to tell them that they may believe the Messengers 28. For it seemed good to the holy Ghost and to us to lay upon you no greater burden then these necessary things 28. Note 1. It is prophaneness for any Bishops or Councells to use these words who neither have assurance nor can give any proof that the Holy Ghost guideth them 2. The Holy Ghost is against imposing unnecessary things as necessary These things here imposed were necessary at least all to those Persons and at the time and most if not all continually 29. That ye abstain from meats offered to idols and from bloud and from things strangled and from fornication from which if ye keep your selves ye shall do well Fare ye well 29. It is not Moses's Law that ye are bound to keep but these commoner precepts Do nothing that scandalously favoureth Idolatry or savoreth of cruelty and bloodiness not eating strangled Creatures in the gore blood avoid defilement by any sort of forbidden fleshly lust and filthiness 30. So when they were dismissed they came to Antioch and when they had gathered the multitude together they delivered the Epistle 30. Note The Multitude was one Assembly not a Diocess nor only the Clergy 31. Which when they had read they rejoyced for the consolation 31. Note Liberty from toylsome Ceremonies tho God first instituted them was matter of joy to the Churches But alass few Churches are allowed that joy by their Lordly Pastors 32. And Judas and Silas being Prophets also themselves exhorted the brethren with many words and confirmed them 32. Note By Prophets is meant such as were inspir●ed by the Holy Ghost either by Revelation of any new thing or by ability to explain and apply known truth 33. And after they had tarried there a space they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the Apostles 34. Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still 35. Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch teaching and Preaching the word of the Lord with many others also 33. Note The Church of Antioch had many excellent Teachers and it is not intimated that any one was Bishop over the rest or that Paul Barnabas Silas Simeon Lucius Manaen c. were subjects to any one 36. And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have Preached the word of the Lord and see how they do 36. Note Converted Souls and Planted Churches must be further visited observed and watered 37. And Barnabas determined to take with them John whose surname was Mark. 38. But Paul thought not good to take him with them who departed from them from Pamphylia and went not with them to the work 39. And the contention was so sharp bttween them that they departed asunder one from the other and so Barnabas took Mark and sailed unto Cyprus 40. And Paul chose Silas and departed being recommended by the brethren unto the Grace of God 41. And he went through Syria and Cilicia confirming the Churches 37. Note Apostles were not infallible in all things even about the fitness of their Helpers 2. Small differences even to sharpen contention may stand with Christian Love and Unity 3. There was then no Judge of such controversies either Bishop or Synod to avoid and end them 4. But God turned this to good for the better spreading of the Gospel CHAP. XVI THen came he to Derbe and Lystra and behold a certain Disciple was there named Timotheus the son of a certain woman which was a Jewess and believed but his Father was a Greek 2. Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium 3. Him would Paul have to go forth with him and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters for they knew all that his Father was a Greek 1. Timothy's Mother being a Jew he might be circumcised though his Father was a Greek And because uncircumcised he might not be admitted to converse with the Jews he circumcised him the Jews being yet permitted to use the Law of Moses which he would not have done had both Parents been Gentiles 4. And as they went through the Cities they delievered them the decrees for to keep that were ordained of the Apostles and Elders which were at Jerusalem 5. And so were the Churches established in the faith and increased in number daily 4 5. They delivering them the Apostles Decrees freed the Church from the doubts which the Judaizers had raised and so they were quieted and setled in Judgment Faith and Concord and daily increased 6. Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia and were forbidden of the holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia 6. Forbidden by some Revelation or Inspiration 7. After they were come to Mysia they assayed to go into Bithynia but the Spirit suffered them not 8. And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas 7. The invitation or inspiration of Gods Spirit diverted them 9. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night There stood a man of Macedonia and prayed him saying Come over into Macedonia and help us 9. Note Gods differencing grace plainly appeareth in sending his Gospel to some Countries rather than to other 10. And after he had seen the vision immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia assuredly gathering that the Lord
Holiness 1. See that the firm Belief of the Truth of the Gospel against all Deceivers be to you as a Military Girdle about your Loins 2. And that universal sincere Obedience to God and Uprightness of Life towards all Men joined to your Pardon through the Merits of Christ may be to you as a Breast-plate is to Soldiers in Fight that no Adversary may have Matter of just Accusation against you 3. And that the Gospel of Christ which speaketh Peace to the World and to your selves may so dwell in your Hearts to make you Men of Peace and in your Mouths to invite others to Peace with God and one another that it may be to you as those Shoes were to Soldiers which they put on when they went to War to keep their Feet from hurt and danger 16. Above all taking the shield of faith wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked 16. Above all see that you firmly believe and trust to the Word and Promises of God which will be to you as a Shield or Target to a Soldier by which he is preserved from all the Darts or Shot that is made against him And though Satans Darts be fiery Persecution and fierce Temptations this will defend you and frustrate all 17. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God 17. And trust fully in Christ as your Saviour for Salvation and this will as an Helmet or Head-piece to a Soldier defend your chiefest Part from danger And skilfully use the Word of God indited and sealed by his Spirit which will serve you for Defence and Conquest by the help of the same Spirit as a Sword doth to a Soldier 18. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the spirit and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints 18. And because you must do all in dependence on God see that you be constant in all sorts or parts of Prayer for your selves and others even such Prayer as Gods Spirit directeth you to by his Word and exciteth you to by his Grace And for that end keep your Minds by watchfulness in a serious praying temper and be not cold or weary but hold on and forget not to pray for all holy Persons and holy things Note That 1. They that scorn praying in or by the Spirit scorn the Work of the Spirit in all acceptable Prayer to God 2. They that forbid Prayer forbid that which God commandeth and his Spirit in us as an Intercessor performeth 3. When God commandeth all Prayer and Supplication we must obey him though any Men would confine us to the Fetters of their narrow defective Words and Books 4. They that hate revile excommunicate unjustly and persecute those Saints whom God commandeth us to love and pray for fight under Satan against Christ 19. And for me that utterance may be given unto me that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel 19. And let me have a special part in your Prayers that I may be freed from silencing Imprisonments and Restraints and may have Liberty and Ability boldly to make known the Mystery of Mans Salvation by Christ 20. For which I am an ambassadour in bonds that therein I may speak boldly as I ought to speak 20. For I am in Bonds by Men though Christs Ambassador even for preaching to Men this Gospel of Salvation But pray for me that whatever it cost me I may do my Duty and speak though forbidden as I ought to speak Note That as God worketh by Men so doth the Devil And therefore it is no wonder that Paul was in Bonds for preaching Salvation and that Men make Laws against Praying and Preaching and if the Devil call it Sedition For really Praying and Preaching do more to destroy his Kingdom and save Souls than Arms can do 21. But that ye also may know my affairs and how I do Tychicus a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord shall make known to you all things 21. And that you may know how all things go with me Tychicus will tell you whom you may trust 22. Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose that ye might know our affairs and that he might comfort your hearts 22. I have sent him that he may represent things truly to you and help to keep you from discouragement or undue trouble for my Sufferings 23. Peace be to the brethren and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 23. I conclude with this Benediction and Prayer for you That God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ will give maintain and increase in you all that confirmed Faith which may fill you with Love and keep you in Peace and Welfare 24. Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity Amen 24. And let the Grace Favour and Blessing of God be still with all them who love our Lord Jesus Christ with sincere incorruptible confirmed Love Amen The Epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the PHILIPPIANS CHAP. I. 1. PAul and Timotheus the servants of Jesus Christ to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi with the bishops and deacons 2. Grace be unto you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ 1 2. I Paul and Timothy now with me send greeting with this Epistle to all the Saints or Christians which are at Philippi with the Bishops and Deacons there wishing to them Grace and Peace which are all Blessings in sum from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. Note 1. That Dr. Hammond affirming That Paul meant here all the Bishops and Deacons in Macedonia or a whole Province doth this without any cogent Proof as he saith the like of Corinth Ephesus c. though it may be granted that consequently they to whom these Epistles were written were to communicate them to as many as they could 2. That he contradicteth himself in saying there was but one Bishop in a City when elsewhere he saith there was one of the Jews Church and another of the Gentiles 3. That Paul saith it was the Saints which are at Philippi with the Bishops and Deacons to wit which were at Philippi with them But sure all that were in a Province so great were not at Philippi And his Conclusion That every Church in Scripture-times had but One Bishop with Deacons his Servants there being then no middle Order in use and that in all the New Testament the Words Bishop and Presbyter signified onely such as we now call Bishops 1. Is contrary to the Descriptions of the Churches of Jerusalem Antioch Corinth c. where in one Assembly there were so many Prophets sit for the Publick Ministry that they needed regulating restraint in Ministring 2. But thus he must maintain That de facto no Church had then more than one Presbyter and so no B ishop more than one sixed
day and not to me onely but unto all them also that love his appearing 6 7 8. Note That 1. Our Ministry and Life is like a Battle Combat or Race for Life or Death 2. Onely they that overcome shall be Crowned 3. Faithful Men may take great Comfort when when ●eath is at hand in the Conscience and review of a well spent victorious Life and Ministry 4. Their Reward will be a Crown of Righteousness given by God as a Righteous Judge on Gospel worthiness tho not on legal merit but supposing free Grace in Christ 5. To love Christs appearing is the effect of a Saving Faith 9 10 11. Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me For Demas hath forsaken me having loved this present world and is departed unto Thessalonica Crescens to Galatia Titus unto Dalmatia Onely Luke is with me Take Mark and bring him with thee for he is profitable to me for the ministry 12. And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus 19 10 11 12. Note That 1. It is not Christ that Demas is said to forsake but Paul and not to turn Worldling but to go about his Worldly Business unseasonably 2. Timothy was not then at Ephesus 13. The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus when thou comest bring with thee and the books but especially the parchments 13. Note The word translated the Cloke is very probably by others translated the Roll viz. of Parchment 14 15. Alexander the copper-smith did me much evil the Lord reward him according to his works Of whom be thou aware also for he hath greatly withstood our words 14 15. Alexander an Excommunicate Man hath much wrong'd me God will reward him according to his works Note Excommunication enrageth impenitent bad Men. 16. At my first answer no man stood with me but all men forsook me I pray God that may not be laid to their charge 16. Note 1. This was not a forsaking Paul's Cause but his Person in danger which is too usual a case Herein he followed Christ whose Disciples all forsook him and fled 2. It 's like Peter was not then at Rome among the forsakers of Paul 17. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me and strengthened me that by me the preaching might be fully known and that all the Gentiles might hear and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion 17. But God forsook me not when all Men forsook me but was with me and strengthened me in Vindicating my Person and Cause that while I was admitted to answer for my self the Hearers might know and fame might tell abroad what Doctrine it is that I suffer for Preaching and so all the City of Rome and others by their report might hear and have notice of it And so I was delivered from the present danger of Death by the Roman Persecutors as from the Jaws of a Lion Note 1. Some think that the words that the Preaching might be fully known refer to Paul's longer time to Preach I exclude not this but prefer the other sence 2. It was not Treason nor sin for Paul to call his Deliverance from the unjust Judgment of the Civil Power his being delivered out of the mouth of the Lion 18. And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom to whom be glory for ever and ever Amen 18. And I doubt not but God will still keep me from all the ill Designs and Attempts of Men against me at least so far that they shall not draw me to do evil and will keep me in a state of right and preparation to his Heavenly Kingdom In the hopeful Sence whereof I rejoicingly desire that he be Glorified for ever Amen 19 20. Salute Prisca and Aquila and the houshold of Onesiphorus Erastus abode at Corinth but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick 19 20. Note That Trophimus was sick though Paul had the Gift of Healing because it was not to be common nor at the Will of Man 21. Do thy diligence to come before winter Eubulus greeteth thee and Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brethren 21. Make hast to come c. 22. The Lord Jesus Christ be with thy spirit Grace be with you Amen 22. The Lord Jesus Christ who is our Mediator and Head and hath purchased chosen and called thee performed for thee his saving Office in keeping thy Soul in Holiness and Peace His Grace which is the greatest Treasure on Earth be with you to keep you and prepare you for Glory Amen Note The Suscriptions to the Epistles are no part of the Holy Scripture ANNOTATIONS FAithful Ministers whose Work is to Preach the Gospel of Salvation should have so much of the Form Belief and Power of it in themselves as to pass triumphantly out of the World in suffering for it and not to think that God useth them hardly And to be satisfied in God's acceptance though their Brethren and Converts should forsake them as the Bishops and Churches of Asia did Paul The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to TITUS CHAP. I. 1 2. PAul a servant of God and an Apostle of Jesus Christ according to the faith of Gods elect and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness In hope of eternal life which God that cannot lie promised before the world began 1 2. Paul c. for the propagating of the Faith of God's Elect and the acknowledgment of that sound Doctrine which is suited to the promoting of godliness in opposition to prophaneness and heresie in hope of eternal life which is the end of all our faith and godliness and all our preaching and suffering which God that cannot lie promised before many Ages past 3. But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour 3. But what he so long ago purposed and darkly promised he ha●h in the fittest appointed season manifested by his Gospel through preaching which is committed to me by the Commission and Commandment of God our Saviour Note That it is doubtful whether by God's Promise be meant only his secret purpose or by 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 be meant many Ages ago One of the two it must be for we cannot feign an actual Promise before the world began distinct from his purpose 2. It is not unlikely that he meaneth the Promise first made to Fallen Man of the Womans Seed and after oft renewed and this obscure word was made plain by the preaching of the Gospel upon Christs Incarnation Life and Resurrection c. 4. To Titus mine own son after the common faith grace mercy and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour Note The Church hath but one Faith or Creed common in the Essentials to every Christian 5. For this cause left I thee in Crete that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting and ordain elders in every city as I had appointed thee 5 Note
as himself nor doth as he would be done by 21. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness and receive with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save your souls 21. Also cast away all filthiness out of your thoughts affections speech and practice and all excrementitious naughtiness or that superfluity which is but provision for the flesh to satisfie its lust and with humble tractable meekness receive God's Word not only opinionatively but as the graff is taken into the tree or your food when it is digested into blood flesh thus made an innaturalized Word and so received digested it will save your Souls 22. But be ye doers of the word and not hearers only deceiving your own selves 22. But to think that bare hearing the Word will save you is but self-deceit There must be inward practice by meditation and outward practice in true obedience 23. For if any be a hearer of the word and not a doer he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass 24. For he beholdeth himself and goeth his way and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was 23 24. An unprofitable custom of bare hearing and not doing is but like a man's looking his face in a glass who so goeth away and minds it no more or forgets it which neither feedeth nor cloatheth him nor cureth his diseases such are these customary dull Speculators 25. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty and continueth therein he being not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work this man shall be blessed in his deed 25. But he that well considereth the Covenant of Grace or the Gospel which is Christ's Law of Liberty or Liberation giving us deliverance from the Jewish Law and from sin and guilt and wrath and death and dwelleth in the study of it till it turn to spiritual life digested and ingraffed in him and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of that which is required to Salvation even sound Faith Repentance sincere Obedience and Patience this man shall be blessed in so doing Note 1. They grosly deny Christ to be King which say that he hath no Law 2. His Gospel Covenant hath Precepts Rewarding Promises and Penal Threats and therefore is a proper Law 3. It giveth pardon on condition of Faith and Repentance to be performed by Divine Grace and Salvation on condition of added Obedience and Perseverance and so is a Law of Liberty Christ is the Author of Eternal Salvation to all them that obey him 4. This doing his commands which is made his imposed condition is the necessary entitling qualification for blessedness Rev. 22.14 Blessed are they that do his Commandments that they may have right to the tree of life and may enter in by the Gates into the City 26. If any man among you seem to be religious and bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his own heart this mans religion is vain 26. If any man among you seem to others or himself to be religious and perhaps of a higher form than others and yet bridleth not his tongue from backbiting slandering or reproaching his Brethren to render them contemptible and unlovely and from speaking ill of men without either truth or a just call this man 's sinful practice doth shew that his Religion is but ineffectual and vain and doth but serve to deceive his own heart For that which doth not save men from sin will not save them from justice 27. Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this to visit the fatherless and widdows in their affliction and to keep himself unspotted from the world 27. There is great contending among Christians whose way of Religious Worship is the purest and best pleasing to God That is the pure and undefiled Religion in God's sight who is our Father which is effectual to sound practical Charity and to a pure unspotted holy life even with true Love and Liberality to relieve those that are in distress and to keep heart and life clean from the love of the World and the temptations of wicked worldly men as seeking in hope for a better World CHAP. II. 1. MY brethren have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ the Lord of glory with respect of persons 1. And you that profess to believe the Glory of our Lord Jesus Christ which the poorest Christians shall partake of equally with the rich and to which all worldly glory is but vanity must not now make a great difference in the Church between rich men and the poor by a worldly respect of persons for their riches 2. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring in goodly apparel and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment 3. And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing and and say unto him Sit thou here in a good place and say to the poor Stand thou there or sit here under my footstool 4. Are ye not then partial in your selves and are become judges of evil thoughts 2 3 4. If in your Church-Assemblies you inordinately shew respect to men for gay cloathing as rich and set light by men that by their garb seem poor do you not shew a carnal partiality by overvaluing wealth and a Judgment misguided by evil estimation Note 1. That this speaketh not against honouring Magistrates but Riches 2. Nor against a prudent respect to the Rich so far as by their wealth they may be engaged to do more good than others 3. And I think those mistake that rather expound this of meetings of Bishops for Judicature as Dr. Hammond than other Church-Assemblies For 1. If they mean any forcing Judicatures Christians had none such there being then no Christian Magistrates that had the power of the Sword 2. And if Bishops had been like our Diocesans and so distant they could not have travelled so far as such must do to keep up ordinary Judicatures without a total deserting their chief work for their Flocks 3. And as they truly were Congregational Bishops over no more than one of our Parishes their distance between City and City was too great for this without the like omissions 4. Christians having then no Judicial Power but as Arbitrators the Contenders chose what Arbitrators they thought best 5. Their Publick Church-Government was exercised in the same Assemblies which met for Worship which therefore are liker here to be mentioned with respect to their most usual business and not the rarer 6. It is the whole Church and not the Bishops only that is here admonished 7. It is too hard a censure for such men to use as are pleading for too much honour to Bishops to suppose them so early guilty of so much partiality and carnal respect to fine cloths and riches and so much Injustice in Judging as this Doctor 's Exposition doth suppose It 's liker to be the vulgars fault 5. Hearken my beloved brethren Hath not God
in their foreheads signifieth their open Profession of Fidelity to the Father and the Son and God's gracious noting them for his own And it helps us to expound what the mark of the Beast was even some open signal obliging Profession of Idol Worship 2. And I heard a voice from heaven as the voice of many waters and as the voice of a great thunder and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps 3. And they sung as it were a new song before the throne and before the four beasts and the elders and no man could learn that song but the hundred and fourty and four thousand which were redeemed from the earth 2 3. The voice of many Waters signified the multitu●● of Converts that by the Gospel were gathered to this Church on Mount Sion who praised God with the 〈◊〉 of Harps or joyful Psalmody And it was new Psalms of Praise for Man's Redemption and the Grace of Christ which they sung as before God and the Cherubims and the holy Church which none of the Jews were fit to sing save the foresaid chosen saved number 4. These are they which were not defiled with women for they are virgins these are they which follow the Lamb whither soever he goeth these were redeemed from among men being the first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb. 5. And in their mouth was found no guile for they are without fault before the throne of God 4 5. The Vision being of those in Heaven as the Precedents of the Christian Church at Jerusalem that should afterward succeed them they were the first-fruits of the Apostles Ministry described Act. 1. 2. 3. 4. who were eminent in Purity and Love free from Idolatry and Fornication as a People chosen out of the Jewish Nation unto Christ and as they were holy on Earth they are faultless and perfect now in Heaven 6. And I saw another angel flie in the midst of heaven having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth and to every nation and kindred and tongue and people 6. Whether the midst of Heaven have the Mystical senses that divers give or be only sent from Heaven to Earth I know not Some say it is called the Everlasting Gospel because it was decreed from everlasting some because it dureth to everlasting or tendeth to life everlasting By the Gospel some understand only the glad tydings of the Fall of the Roman Empire some the Doctrine of Reformation and tydings of the Fall of Popery and some the common Doctrine of Salvation by Christ as it was now more freely and universally to be published to the Gentile World 7. Saying with a loud voice Fear God and give glory to him for the hour of his judgment is come and worship him that made heaven and earth and the sea and the fountains of waters 7. Away with your Idols that are no Gods and turn to and fear the true and living God who made Heaven and Earth For the time is come that he will judge and destroy Idolaters Other expositions I omit 8. And there followed another angel saying Babylon is fallen is fallen that great city because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornification 8. Another part of my vision was another Angel c. implying a further revelation to me Whether it signifie also another sort of Preachers on Earth and who as some say the Albigenses and Waldenses or Luther Zuinglius or Illyricas and his century writers let them tell that know Babylon is here described and more fully after to be that great City that drew all nations unto Idolatry whether this were Rome as Heathen or Rome as Papal or Rome as containing both see my Advertisement 9. And the third angel followed them saying with a loud voice If any man worship the beast and his image and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand 10. The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy Angels and in the presence of the Lamb 9 10. Those that partake of the sins of Idolatrous Babylon or Rome shall partake of her plagues and the Judgment that overthroweth her shall extend to all her companions in Idolatry and also the punishment in the life to come And Christ and his Angels will execute and behold it as just and good Some to save their charity say that damnation is not denounced to all that only have the Name of the beast or the Number but only to them that receive his Mark as his slaves and worship him and his Image But I think receiving his Name and its Number is included in receiving the Mark. But all my be pardoned to the penitent believers Whether this Angel be Luther Chemnitius Whittaker and such others I leave to the proof of the affirmers It s enough to me that this additional revelation and punishment is notified to John as by another Angel Though many think that only temporal punishment is here meant doubtless the same sin deserveth more 11. And the smoak of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever And they have no rest day nor night who worship the beast and his image and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name 11. Though temporal calamity be here included this seems plainly to mean Hell And the Mark of his Name is here made equal to His Mark verse 9. O the restless misery that is prepared for the impenitent 12. Here is the patience of the saints here are they that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus 12. This misery of impenitent Idolaters and Enemies of Christ will shew the World how wise and happy the Saints were that by patient suffering did overcome and kept to the end the Commands of God and the Faith of Jesus Faith Obedience and Patience are all necessary to Salvation 13. And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Write Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth yea saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them 13. Though it be always happy to be at Rest with Christ the sufferings of those times will be so great as will make it seem a sesonable blessedness to go to that Rest where they shall no more labour or suffer but receive the fruit of their labours and work performed for Christ on Earth Some make this to be but a promise of after-freedom from Persecution here The Text proveth a Blessedness for separated Souls before the Resurrection For 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 henceforth signifieth from this time forward The Socinians therefore abuse the Text that make the Blessedness to be but Resting in a state of death till the Resurrection For life with God's service and acceptance in a time of Persecution is a
all the Idolater's Forces the Ruin of Dioclesian Maxim Herculius Galer Maxim Maxentius Licinius that so the Christians by and with Constantine might triumph And some think it is a weakning the Roman Power toward Euphrates to let in the Persians and others to afflict them 13. And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet 14. For they are the spirits of the devils working miracles which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world to gather them to the battel of that great day of God Almighty 13 14. As when Ahab was to be destroyed the Devil was a lying Spirit in the mouth of all his Prophets and bid him Go and prosper and Zidkiah made Horns to signifie his Victory so I saw as it were three Devils like the Frogs of Egypt or three lying Spirits sent by Satan and encouraged by the Idolatrous persecuting Emperors and by his flattering Oracles Augurs Orators c. to persuade all the foresaid Princes to fight against Constantine especially Maxentius and Licinius that they might fall as Abab and Pharaoh did Or say others They were Popish Missionaries and Priests and Friers sent out by Antichristian Civil Powers and Antichristian Ecclesiastical Powers to draw men to Popery and Idolatry that they may be destroyed when God shall judge them The day of God some take as before for Constantine's Victories against Idolaters others for the day of the Pope's Fall and others for the last day of Judgment 15. Behold I come as a thief Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments lest he walk naked and they see his shame 15. My coming will be when men expect me not Blessed is he that prepareth not for Shame and Confusion when his Sin and Hypocrisie shall by my Judgment be brought to light by complying with the higher Powers in sin as thinking that I will be long in coming to take down Sinners and see up Saints 16. And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon 16. The Devil's Prophets provoked them to gather and fight to their destruction Note Here the Dragon is expounded to be Devils And this word Devils in this Book usually signifieth those Idols Jupiter Mars Apollo c. which the Romans worshipped instead of God For Paul tells us It was Devils that they worshipped And it being the spirits of these Devils or Heathen Idols that are sent out it seemeth most probable that it is the War with the Heathen Idolaters that is here meant Dr. H. after Grotius noteth that in the Fight at Rome Maxentius had a hundred and seventy thousand Foot and eighteen thousand Horse of Romans Italians c. and Constantine had ninety thousand Foot and eight thousand Horse of Germans Gauls and Britains and that the Victory was of such consequence that from that day the Account of Years by Indictions began to commemorate the deliverance of City and Church which since is turned into accounting from the Birth of Christ But others say It is the day of the Fall of Antichrist And some say Of the destruction of the Turks And some say He that gathered them together is Christ or God by his permitting Providence for their destruction 17. And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven from the throne saying It is done 17. The Angel that poured his Vial into the Air signifieth the coming down of God's Plagues from Heaven on the Generality of the Enemies And the Voice out of the Temple signifieth that it is done by God's Decree for the Vindication of his holy Worship and his Ch●●●h It is done That is The last Plague on the Roman Pharaoh is now pouring out and he is to be drowned in the Red Sea God's Judgments are accomplished for the Extirption of the Heathen Roman Empire and the revenging the Blood of the Saints shed by them As Pharaoh's Cruel●ies increased before the Isra●lites were delivered so Dioclesian made the cru●●●st Slaughters before the Heathen Beast was to be destroyed and then they were ripe and the time was come Or a● others say The time of the Fall of Pop●ry An●●christ Or as others The end of the World 18. And there were voices and thunders and lightnings and there was a great earthquake such as was not since men were upon the earth so mighty an earthquake and so great 18. The great commotions which went to these great changes and subversion of the Heathen Powers was represented to me as by Thundrings Lightnings and the greatest Earthquake Say some it is the changes by the Ostrog●ths and such others Say others there were literally such dreadful Earthquakes before Totilas took Rome Say others it is yet to come before Antichrists fall And say others before the day of Judgment 19. And the great city was divided into three parts and the cities of the nations fell and great Babylon came in remembrance before God to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath 19. And Rome was then divided between Heathens Christians and worldly men that were indifferent for Religion Or say others Heathens Orthodox and Hereticks It 's taken from Ezek. 5. Others say that literally the third part was destroyed by Totilas and say others by Alaricus others say it is three in relation to the three Princes the Dragon the Beasts and the false Prophet others that Antichrist's Kingdom was falling by being divided in it self 20. And every island fled away and the mountains were not found 20. As Earthquakes shake Mountains and Islands so all the Dependents of Rome fell with it 21. And there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven every stone about the weight of a talent and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail for the plague thereof was exceeding great 21. God's Executions bruised and broke them as great Hail would do the tender Plants and yet they did but blaspheme God the more A Talent is threscore pound God's Judgments pursued the scattered Roman Citizens say some the Papists say others and all wicked Christians say others CHAP. XVII 1. ANd there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials and talked with me saying unto me Come hither I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters 2. With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication and the inhabiters of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication 1. Say some 1. I will shew thee what is coming from God on Imperial Heathen Idolatrous Rome who by Power and by Learning by the first and second Beast hath drawn Kings and Nations with her to Idolatry Others say it is Papal Rome and they prove it because if they had not been married to God
before by the Profession of Christianity they could not have been Adulterers To which the former say 1. That Fornication may be the sin of the unmarried 2. That by Fornication is meant Idolatry and God's right may serve to infer this guilt though men be not married to him by consent And that it is incredible that all the Heathen World are no Idolaters because they were not profest Christians By the Whore is meant the same as the Woman the second two horned Beast and the false Prophet say many that is the Church of Rome with the whole body of the Roman Clergy which others deny 3. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-coloured beast full of names of blasphemy having seven heads and ten horns 3. Into the Wilderness say some to represent the desolation say others because it was a Revelation not to be yet openly known in the City for if the Rulers had known of all these terrible Predictions against them they would have raged by Persecution against Christians and therefore all this Prophecy was to be obscure and not communicated long so commonly as other Scriptures Others say it was to shew that Antichrist's Kingdom is barren without a drop of grace Others that solitude is fittest for contemplation Others that the Wilderness is Heathenism brought in by Popery Others that as the true Church was driven into a Wilderness of solitude and suffering so now shall Papists be Others that the Papacy is a Wilderness as an Apostatical Church succeeding the Apostolick Church Who is the great Whore whether Rome Pagan Rome Papal or Rome hereafter fallen to a future Antichrist I ouce for all refer the Reader to my Postscript 4. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication 4. Idolatrous Rome was represented to me as a Woman richly and splendidly arrayed by her wealth and pomp and power enticing the World to her Idolatry 5. And upon her forehead was a name written MYSTERIE BABYLON THE GREAT THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH 5. The name written was Mystery Babylon c. that is Mystical not literal Babylon the Great City Rome the Mother of Idolatry and Wickedness propagating them by her Power and Learning to all the Nations of her Dominions and further in the World As Babylon was the Idolatrous cruel Captivator of the Ancient Jews overthrowing their Kingdom so was Idolatrous proud Rome the Captivator and Persecutor of Jew and Gentile Christians and the great Enemy of the Church 6. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus and when I saw her I wondered with great admiration 6. Idolatry was not her only crime but the guilt of being as drunken with holy blood Both her pomp and her bloodiness seemed wonderfull 7. And the angel said unto me Wherefore didst thou marvel I will tell thee the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carrieth her which hath the seven heads and ten horns 7. Note Seeing God professeth to open the mystery who this Mother of Harlots is it is safest to add as little on pretense of fuller exposition as we can 8. The beast that thou sawest was and is not and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit and go into perdition and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world when they behold the beast that was and is not and yet is 8. Some take this as fitted to the time when the Empire should first be Christian as if it meant Rome was the beast when it was Pagan but now is not when it is Christian but will be again when it was Papal and Antichristian Or Rome is the Idolatrous beast under the Pagan but is not now under that form but yet is under the Papal form Many other expositions I pass by They that expound all of Pagan Rome say that the sense is I shall notifie the beast which is the Roman Emperor by that one who now reigneth which is Domitian He was in the Government when his Father Vespasian was abroad And he after ceased while his Father and Brother Titus reigned and then reasumed it raised by Satan to persecute the Church and then is basely kill'd himself Rather q. d. I am now shewing thee the fall and destruction of the beast and whore and will now notifie him to thee accordingly The beast or Emperor at this fall will be the bloodyest of all persecutor Dioclesian Of whom then it may be said He was Emperour But discouraged by the ill success of his persecution he with Maxim He●cillius laid down the Empire and both betook themselves to a private life But after the Devil would sain have restored them and they attempted to rise out of their privacy but did it to their own destruction being both kill'd when Constantine prevailed as were Licinius and Maxenti●s who would have done their work So that when Constantine was destroying the Pagan Empire it was true that Dioclesian and Maxim H●●cul was Emperour and now is not and yet is that is in being though not in power but will rise to his perdition And the Idolaters shall be struck with wonder and con●●rna●ion when they see so cruel and great a Tyrant so brought to nought 9. And here is the mind which hath wisdom The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sitteth 10. And there are seven Kings five are fallen and one is and the other is not yet come and when he cometh he must continue a short space 11. And the beast that was and is not even he is the eighth and is of the seven and goeth into perdition 9 10 11. That the seven mountains are those of Rome is very plain But who were the seven Kings I confess I know not Here is work for a searching head the mind that hath wisdom But it is matter of fact which when the thing was newly done the mind that hath wisdom might know But how can we know it but by history without a new Revelation And history herein is lame and much uncertain and the work of man and all men are lyars few Christians were writers till three hundred years after Christ the first Christians had many fabulous reporters among them as their spurious writings shew When John wrote this book and whether all at once or at many years distance of the parts is unknown whatever confident men may talk Eusebius trusteth divers fabulous authors and reports for want of better though he be credible himself I take the style and words of the Book to be the best History of the time which intimateth that part of it at least was written before the siege of Jerusalem
which maketh me the easilyer believe Epiphanius that John was first banished into Patmos in the reign of Claudius and there wrote part of the Book at least For though some of it might be written of things past it s hardly credible that most of it should be such This Verse hath many Expositions Many say it speaketh not of individual Kings but of seven sorts of Government viz. Kings Consuls Decemvirs Dictators Tribunes Military and Emperours and the Pope they make to be the seventh and eighth But so much is said against this as I cannot answer As 1. That it is not meer Power but Idolatrous and Persecuting Power that the Text describeth And none of these persecuted save the Emperours nor were they so Idolatrous as Athens and other places 2. That the meer Imperial Power as the Pillar of Idolatry is plainly made the Beast therefore not the five antecedent 3. That indeed these five were no Supreme Power for that was only in the Senate which had the Legislative Power till violence ravisht them of it which when it did the Consuls Decemvirs Tribunes had but a part No nor the Emperours long or oft These were not several Sovereigns but parts of the Supreme as the Tribuni Plebis were and some of them very short And the Pontisices Ma● might as well be named as some of them And who the seventh and eight Head were is said with so great difficulties difference and confusion as would be tiresome to repeat The Papists Opinions about a future Antichrist and theirs that apply all to Mahomet I will not repeat They that expound it of particular C●sars also are opposed by many hard Objections Some of them apply all to the seven Emperours that the Christians were first troubled by viz. Cla●aius N●●s Gal●a O●io Vitellius Vespasian Titus and Domitian the eighth But three or four of these persecuted not Some think that seven here signifieth not a determinate number but many They seem the same with the seven Heads chap. 13. And if the ten Horns signifie not precisely just ten why should the seven I that understand it not may say it is as probable as some of these that this be the sense it being the time of the Fall of the Beast and Whore that I am speaking of there shall be at that time seven Caesars alive at once of whom Dioclesian Constantius Chlorus Galerius Maximianus Severus and Galerius Maximinus are faln at the time when Constantine is destroying Idolatry Constantine is the sixth who is then in being Licinius is after to be used as one of them seeming then a Friend The bloody Dioclesian who with Max. Herculius laid down the Rule is one of the seven and together will by the Devil's instigation attempt again to be the eighth but to his own perdition Whether Maxentius pass only for a partial Usurper after or pass for the eighth rather than Dioclesian I let pass Both Licinius and Maxentius continued but a short space 12. And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten Kings which have received no kingdome as yet but receive power as kings one hour with the beasts 12. Say some they are twelve Heathen Kings that are not full Kings but tributary to Rome Say others they are the Gothish and other extraneous Kings that are not in the Empire but are consederates Some say it is the Tyrants that have headed the Devil's Kingdom in seven several Ages But this is a vain Popish Evasion That ten Kings were dependent on Pagan Rome is clear and that ten or more of the Barbarians broke the Christian Empire But which is meant is the doubt 13. These have one mind and shall give their power and strength unto the beast 14. These shall make war with the Lamb and the Lamb shall overcome them for he is the Lord of Lords and King of Kings and they that are with him are called and chosen and faithfull 13 14. The ten Idolatrous dependent Kingdoms shall assist and support the Roman Pagan Empire with their Power and Strength But Christ who overcometh Rome will overcome them also for he is over all Kings and Kingdoms and will help the Christian Army under Constantine Or say others ten Kings shall give their Power to the Pope and make War against Christ that is his Doctrine and Worship and Christ and the Reformers shall overcome them But these cannot be the same barbarous Kingdoms of Goths c. forementioned but mostly others 15. And he saith unto me The waters which thou sawest where the whore sitteth are peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues 15. This Idolatrous Roman Power ruleth over many great and populous Nations of the Earth Or as others the Papal Idolatrous Power is upheld by many Nations even all the Empire 16. And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast these shall hate the whore and shall make her desolate and naked and shall eat her flesh and burn her with fire 16. The ten Nations that before upheld the Roman Idolatry shall turn against her and be the Instruments of her destruction The Britains Gauls Germans and divers others first fought with Constantine against the Pagans and many more of them after turned Christians Or say others the foresaid Goths Vandals c. shall overthrow the remnant of Pagans in Rome Or say others The Reformation shall be wrought by Princes that have forsaken Popery Whether it speak only of destroying the Idolatrous Roman Power or of destroying the Houses or City it self is controverted The latter is not yet performed nor the first as to the Papacy 17. For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will and to agree and give their kingdom unto the beast until the words of God shall be fulfilled 17. God hath so over-ruled them and all their hearts that eventually they shall serve the Pagan Empire say some or the Papal Power say others till the time that God will pull them down as he foretold Note God can so order things that all his Judgments shall be executed by sinners without causing any one of their sins 18. And the woman which thou sawest is that great city which reigneth over the kings of the earth 18. It is certainly Rome that then reigned It is certain then that Pagan Imperial Rome was at that time the Beast on which the Whore sate And certain that Pagan Idolatry was it that then made Rome the Whore But whether besides this Christian Imperial Rome under Constantine or under the Western Emperours after or Imperial Constantinople or Rome as the Popes Seat before 606 or after only or when be the Whore And whether their very differen sort of sin make them two or three whores or the concord in general or similitude make Pagan and Papal Rome to be the same whore as meant in this Text these and other are the doubts But the certain part must not be doubted of CHAP. XVIII 1. ANd after these things I saw another angel come down from
For in one hour so great riches is come to nought 14 15 16 17. Rome's Pride and Sensuality found all the Countries money for all sorts of commodities whose Market ceaseth by her destruction 17. And every ship master and all the company in ships and sailers and as many as trade by sea stood afar off 18. And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning saying What city is like unto this great city 19. And they cast dust on their heads and cried weeping and wailing saying Alas alas that great city wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness for in one hour is she desolate 17 18 19. The Fall of the Pagan Power and Religion being the Political Life of the City is thus represented in Vision to John under the shew of the burning of the City-buildings as our Eyes saw London burning three days 1666. Septemb. 2 3 and 4th Or say others The Fall of Rome Papal was thus represented But others say that Rome Papal shall be thus really burnt and destroyed 20. Rejoice over her thou heaven and ye holy apostles and prophets for God hath avenged you on her 20. It was this same Roman Idolatrous Power which murdered the Holy Apostles and many Prophets that are now in Heaven And they shall rejoice in the vindictive justice of God And so shall the Church on earth Not as it is revenge on private enemies but as it is Gods publick deliverance of his Church and vindication of his truth and Cause and Glory 21. And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great milstone and cast it into the sea saying Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down and shall be found no more at all 21. The Pagan Empire was never again restored for Julian did but begin to attempt it and was kill'd before he could so much as lay any foundations for it Yea Rome was never more the seat of the Empire much less of the Pagan Empire For Constantine did but as it were take up his quarters there for a short time and remove the seat to Constantinople And his Successours in the West had but the lesser part of the Empire and were sometimes at Rome and somtime at Millan and sometimes at Ravenna and after in France and Germany 22. And the voice of harpers and musicians and of pipers and trumpeters shall be heard no more at all in thee and no craftsman of whatsoever craft he be shall be found any more in thee and the sound of a milstone shall be heard no more at all in thee 23. And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee for thy merchants were the great men of the earth for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived 22 23. Thus as by the Emblem of a City totally ruined and deserted was the Fall of Pagan Rome represented to John And that you may know that it was not the burning and desertion of the material buildings that is meant he now tells you that by the merchants he meant the Nations that consented to and upheld her Idolatry and power 24. And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints and of all that were slain upon the earth 24. God dealt thus severely with her because she had not only been the murderer of Apostles Prophets and the primitive Christians at Rome and abroad in all her Dominions in upholding her Idols but as Jerusalem had by imitating former persecutors justified them and so suffereth for all The considering of Dan. 7.11 Jer. 51.63 25.10 Ezek. 17.13 Ezek. 27.12 13. Will help to expound all this Others say It is Papal Rome and how the blood of Apostles and Prophets was found in her they tell us from Matth. 23.35 And how the blood of Saints will be found in her is easily proved CHAP. XIX 1. ANd after these things I heard a great voice of much people in heaven saying Halleluiah salvation and glory and honour and power unto the Lord our God 1. The Saints in Heaven and the Christians on earth gave Praise to God and glorified him for this great work 2. For true and righteous are his judgments for he hath judged the great whore which did corrupt the earth with her fornication and hath avenged the blood of his servants at her hand 3. And again they said Allelujah and her smoke rose up for ever and ever 2 3. They glorified God for holy and amiable justice● and destroying the Mother of Idolatry and nest of Luxury and cruelty God will have great Glory by destroying the persecutors and wicked and in delivering his Saints and in the Freedom of the Gospel 4. And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne saying Amen Allelujah 4. And the consenting Praises of the Church especially of Christian Jews was represented to me under the ost-mentioned similitude of the Temple-Worship where the Twelve Tribes were doubly represented by twelve Oxen and twelve Lions and four Cherubims were about the Mercy-Seat Jews and Gentile Christians praise God for the Fall of Babylon 5. And a voice came out of the throne saying Praise our God all ye his servants and ye that fear him both small and great 5. And God himself and his Ministers called to all his Church to joyn in these his Praises 6. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude and as the voice of many waters and as the voice of mighty thunderings saying Allelujah for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth 7. Let us be glad and rejoyce and give honour to him for the marriage of the Lamb is come and his wife hath made her self ready 8. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linnen clean and white for the fine linnen is the righteousness of Saints 6 7 8. And the raising of the Catholick Church in numbers and extent and power to the visible Glory of Christ was represented to me by the Voice as of a great multitude c. saying Praise the Lord for his Kingdom is coming in Power and his Church shall be promoted by the Rulers of the Earth and the Kingdoms of the World shall be visibly the Kingdoms of the Lord and of his Christ And Christ and his Church will appear to the World in Honour and Joy as Marriages use to be celebrated And the Catholick Church shall be clothed with the notes of Honour and Purity or Righteousness or shall publickly worship him in his instituted Ordinances 9. And he saith unto me Write Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage-supper of the Lamb And he saith unto me These are the true sayings of God 9. Happy are they that shall see the fall of Babylon and the Deliverance and Advancement of the Christian Church and shall
Pagan Blasphemy Therefore it was Pagan Rome or its Empire that they headed 3. The seven Pagan sorts of Government were not seven Heads of the Papacy or Roman Church therefore the Papacy or Roman Church was not the Beast For they were the Heads of the Beast And the wounding of one of the Heads shews that all the seven were Heads of one and the same Beast 4. Who is able to make War with the Beast tells us that it was by Arms that he stood and not by mere Hypocrisy and deceit That was the part of the second Beast and not of the first 5. It is all that dwell on the Earth without that Church that worship him But those that dwell in heaven and the Tabernacle and name of Christ he Blasphemeth v. 5.6.7 6. They worship the Dragon for giving Power to the Beast But by the Dragon the Text saith is meant the Devil and it is those Devils that Pagans thought did prosper Rome that is Mars Jupiter Apollo c But Papist worship not these for setting up the Pope 7. The Dwellers on the Earth worshipped the first Beast whose deadly wound was healed c. 13.12 But it was not the Pope nor the Papal Rome or Church whose deadly wound was healed in the Judgment of all them that says the very erecting of the Papacy was the healing of that Wound For it was not wounded as a head before it was in being And if it was Pagan Rome or Idolatry that the Papacy healed then the healed and not the healing party was the first Beast 8. It s contrary to divers express Texts that the first and second Beast are the same Therefore they that make the Pope the second must acknowledge another to be the first 9. The number of a man received cannot be found of Papal Rome 10. All that receive the mark and name of the Beast are without conversion to be tormented for ever But we cannot say so of all that own the Papacy Education and converse and prejudice against Protestants for their divisions maketh may think verily that the Papal Church is the best for its unity and antiquity and extent and duration c When we read the Writings of such Men as Bernard Gerson Kempis Gerhard Zutphani●nsis Thaulerus Sales c. And the lives of such as Ph. Nerius de Renti Boromeus c. Yea the Writings of such as Bonaventure and divers Schoolmen we find so much of truth and holiness in them that forbids that Judgment Further that it is Pagan Rome that is the Whore and its Empire as Idolatrous and captivating that is the first Beast and not the Papacy they argue thus If it be Papal Rome it is either the City as building and place or it is the Policie 1. Not the place called the City for it is good as such 2. Not the Place as related to the Policie For 1. The material City of Pagan Rome was as much defiled as that of Papal Rome and yet continued 2. Else when the Pope dwells elsewhere the relation would follow him For above 100 years much of Italy it self placed the Supremacy in the Patriarcks of Aquileia Rome may fall and the Papacy stand It hath been oft taken and sack't and long possest by Goths and others Even Charles 5. By Charles of Burbon sack't it 2. If in the Policie either 1. As related to Rome 2. Or as elsewhere placed And what is that Policie that is the formal constitution of the first Beast 1. It i● not Empire as such for all Power is of God and was to be obeyed in Heathens Else all Emperours would be such Beasts or as they say Antichrists 2. It is not Empire meerly as Roman For then both the Heathen Emperours would have been the Beast or Antichrists without respect to their sin And Constantine Valentinian Jovian Theodosii Marcian c. the great blessings of the Church would have been Antichrists or the beast Or at least those good Emperors that abode at Rome 3. It is not Empire meerly as found in a person of bad Qualities and Life For then every wicked Emperour and King would be the Beast or their Antichrist and a Pope that were not personally vicious would be none 4. It is not every Emperor or King that is an Usurper or invader For then many Emperours would be the Beast 5. It is not every one that is Ambitious and st●iveth to be highest and above all others For then there would be a great many Antichrists in the World 6. It is not every one that in Church Power would be highest for then James and John would have bin Antichrists and so would many Bishops of Constantinople and Alexandria if not many in most other lands among the several parties of Christians 7. It is not every one that pretendeth to and Usurpeth a sort of Power that God never giveth For so do many Imposers of most parties 8. It is not every one that joineth Civil and Ecclesiastical Power in one person For so did Melchizedeck and so did Cyril and other Alexandrian Bishops and those of Constantinople and what Episcopal Countrys have not such If you say that this is a Kin to Antichristianity or preparatory I say our question is not What is a Kin or preparatory but what is it that formally constituteth it 9. It is not every one that is a Persecutor for so alas have been too many in most times and places nor is it all that promote heresie or Blasphemy by Persecution For so did Valens and many Arrian Kings and Councils Gensericus Hunnericus Theodoricus Odoacer c. 10. It is not all that were Idolaters in any degree for so is now four sixth parts of the World Much less all inward Heart-idolaters as are all that are Covetous and love the World better than God and obey man against him Nor is it all that give Saints or Angels undue or sinful Veneration for so John twice offered prostration to the Angel At least so did the Council of Nice to the Images of Saints and especially the Virgin Mary And so did many of the Eastern Emperours and Tharasius drew in almost all the Eastern Bishops yea many were faulty long before Popery came in 11. It is not the being of any of these at Rome that constituteth the Beast or Antichrist which would not do it elsewhere For Theodorick Odoacer and other Arrians Blasphemers of Christ and Persecutors in Rome were not the Beast or Antichrist It must therefore say these men be somewhat differing from all these which we can find in Pagan Rome but not in Papal If the same thing will make the Pope and all Papists to be the beast that would not make another such there must be some special reason for it 12. Lastly say they it must be remembred that it is confest to be Civil Power and not Ecclesiastical that constituteth the first Beast and Rome is his Seat Now 1. The Empire was not setled at Rome but at Constantinople when Christianity
Religion into a humane hurtful love-killing Faction If I abhor millions and millions meerly on my uncertain exposition of the Revelations I cannot do it in Faith If one ask me why I do it and I say because they are of Babylon or worship the Beast and you ask me how I know it I must say that I know it not But most here believe it because Mr. A. Mr. B. Mr. C. c. say so And so as Papists found their Faith and their hatred of us as hereticks on the credit of their Teachers that say so so shall we ours on the word of our Teachers And here I dread the effects viz abhorring men causelesly corrupting our Prayers and Sermons and Books and fathering all on God condemning all as favouring Popery who have not contracted this hating disease crying down many good and many harmless things merely because they come from the beast and Babylon Temples themselves good Prayers excellent Ministers and Churches yea Baptism it self have been cryed down and renounced as Babylonish and Antichristian and a ground of endless Divisions and starting at every shaddow that Rome hath had to do with is thus laid yea the Seekers greatly countenanced that say Scripture Church and Ministry are lost in the wilderness and the Church feigned to be brought into the wilderness just when it was brought out of it which was the Pagan persecution even the Protestant Churches are condemned as being yet Antichristian And the Martyrs that suffered by Papists yea and those that suffered in the 3d 4th and 5th Centuries by Arrians and others are all made by many to be the Children of Babylon And a war proclaimed between professed Christians by which all the Romanists are tempted to hate and destroy us as those that would do so by them And all this by the expounding the Revelations of that which no man that hath not more knowledge than I can find that it saith or medleth with And that needlesly while we have plain texts enough that condemn Popery and all sin by which we may abhor bad men without the danger of hating the Children of God Christ is in our Creed but Antichrist is not All the old Fathers were not Papists that took not the Pope for Antichrist But more probability of it may be gathered from other Texts than from the Revelations VIII To say I know not what I would know and cannot is easier to me than the dread of being guilty of the sin threatned in the conclusion of this Book that God will add the plagues in it to them that add to it and blot his name out of the Book of Life who taketh from it I deny not other mens knowledge but my own Ignorance of mens ignorance is the mortal disease of the world To add to the sense is to add to the Book To say this is the sense when I know it not and where five of the wisest are of four minds and Common Christians take all on trust this exposeth me to the dread of this heavy curse If this account excuse me not to the Reader it excuseth me to my Conscience whose censure I must more fear than mans lest I prefer my interest in the good opinion of partial misled censorious dividers before the pleasing of God and my Salvation and that when I am going from this World to him And if all this seem too much to any the diseases and danger of the Churches the extreams of many and their sad effects these fifty years and the confuting of those who falsly interpret my History of Bishops and Councils do make it seem otherwise to me I blame not modest conjectures if men will but confess their uncertainty when they are uncertain and not make an uncertain Opinion an Article of Faith and sacrifice to it certain Fundamental Truth or Duty the Churches Peace or Christian Love nor use it to kindle a partial hating dividing Zeal Good Mr. Brightman did with a Pious Mind determine many things very confidently which time hath already confuted He hath concluded that the Blessed Resurrection and time of Christs Thousand years Reign in the New Jerusalem shall be 1695 eleven years hence Thomas Rogers and many others have been shamed by setting times which being past have confuted them This hath frighten'd some others from that boldness who yet in other uncertainties have been so confident as that they have drawn many good People thereby to measure their Faith and Charity I am far from thinking that deeper Students are as ignorant herein as I But I would not have all that are as ignorant lookt upon as Aliens And I confess that I am less able to expound Prophecies than Daniel who yet thus concludeth Ch. 12.8 9. And I heard but I understood not Then said I O my Lord what shall be the end of these things And he said Go thy way Daniel for the Words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end Yet I say as Calvin I make no doubt but the Revelation is Gods Word though I understand it not and that it is not useless Yea so much as I do understand is of exceeding comfortable use Though I know not whether the New Jerusalem will come down from Heaven before or at the Common Resurrection it rejoiceth me that it will come And God having condescended to describe it as Glorious by corporeal Similitudes to us that have no full Idea's of things Spiritual it is a meet means of our comfort by such Similitudes to conceive of that Glory and even to imprint them on our minds to further our desires of that Blessed State and make us Loves and long for Christs appearing and cry daily Come Lord Jesus While I was writing this there came to my hands Isaac Vossius his Var. Observat In which he sheweth the magnitude of Rome when it was in its Grandeur it being about 60 Miles about and how it decreased and that Constantine destroyed Rome far more and before the Goths by building Constantinople so that within 80 years it was not the fifth part so big as in Aurelians time And that when Rufus and Victor wrote there remained not the 20th part of the old City and that now under the Pope it is so far from containing the seven Hills that it is almost all contained in the Campus Martius and containeth not now scarce the two hundredth part of the old City And that it was fitly called Babylon the great we read that old Babylon was near as great as Rome at the greatest and by Herodotus and some others made greater It is answered to this that it is the same City still known by the same Name But it hath not either the same Situation Magnitude Power Dominion and Idolatrous Fornication by which John was to know it nor would that description agree to it now By many such reasons I suspect that the Questions who is the Beast which is Babylon and who is the Antichrist are not the same in the
