utterly ‖ Or abolished rooted out 11 Who then should make more mourning then she that hath lost so great a multitude and not thou which art sorry but for one 12 But if thou sayest unto me My lamentation is not like the earths because I have lost the fruit of my womb which I brought forth with pains and bare with sorrows 13 ‖ But the earth after the manner of the earth whereinto the present multitude is gone again as it came out But the earth not so for the multitude present in it according to the course of the earth is gone as it came 14 Then say I unto thee Like as thou hast brought forth with labour even so the earth also hath given her fruit namely man ever since the beginning unto him that made her 15 Now therefore keep thy sorrow to thy self and bear with a good courage that which hath be faln thee 16 For it thou shalt acknowledge the determination of God to be just thou shalt both receive thy son in time and shalt be commended amongst women 17 Go thy way then into the city to thine husband 18 And she said unto me That will I not do I will not go into the city but here will I die 19 So I proceeded to speak further unto her and said 20 Do not so but be counselled by me for how many are the adversities of Sion be comforted in regard of the sorrow of Jerusalem 21 For thou seest that our sanctuary is said waste our altar broken down our temple destroyed 22 Our psaltery is laid on the ground our song is put to silence our rejoycing is at an end the light of our candlestick is put out the ark of our covenant is spoiled our holy things are defiled and the name that is called upon us is almost profaned our children are put to shame our priests are burnt our Levites are gone into captivity our virgins are defiled and our wives ravished our righteous men carried away our little ones destroyed our young men are brought in bondage and our strong men are become weak 23 And which is the greatest of all the seal of Sion hath now lost her honour for she is delivered into the hands of them that hate us 24 And therefore shake off thy great heaviness and put away the multitude of sorrows that the Mighty may be merciful unto thee again and the Highest shall give thee rest and ease from thy labour 25 And it came to pass while I was talking with her behold her face upon a sudden shined exceedingly and her countenance glistered so that I was afraid of her and mused what it might be 26 And behold suddenly she made a great cry very fearful so that the earth shook at the noise of the woman 27 And I looked and behold the woman appeared unto me no more but there was a city builded and a large place shewed it self from the foundations then was I afraid and cried with a loud voice and said 28 Where is * Ch. 4.1 Uriel the angel who came appeared unto thee a city builded 43 And whereas she told thee of the death of her son this is the ‖ Or interpretation solution 44 This woman whom thou sawest is Sion and whereas she said unto thee even she whom thou seest as a city builded 45 Whereas I say she said unto thee that she hath been thirty years barren those are the thirty years wherein there was no offering made in her 46 But after thirty years Solomon builded the city and offered offerings and then bare the barren a son 47 And whereas she told thee that she nourished him with labour that was the dwelling in Jerusalem 48 But whereas she said unto thee That my son coming into his marriage-chamber hapned to have a fall and died this was the destruction that came to Jerusalem 49 And behold thou sawest her likeness and because she mourned for her son thou beganst to comfort her and of these things which have chanced these are to be opened unto thee 50 For now the most High seeth that thou art grieved unfeignedly and sufferest from thy whole heart for her so hath he shewed thee the brightness of her glory and the comeliness of her beauty 51 And therefore I bade thee remain in the field where no house was builded 52 For I knew that the Highest would shew this unto thee 53 Therefore I commanded thee to go into the field where no foundation of any building was 54 For in the place wherein the Highest beginneth to shew his city there can no mans building be able to stand 55 And therefore sear not let not thine heart he affrighted but go thy way in and see the beauty and greatness of the building as much as Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into Judea unto * Joh. 7.42 the city of David which is called Bethlehem because he was of the house and linage of David 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife being great with childe 6 And so it was that while they were there the days were accomplished that she should be delivered 7 And she brought forth her first-born son and wrapped him in swadling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn 8 And there were in the same countrey shepherds abiding in the field keeping ‖ Or the night-watches watch over their flock by night 9 And lo the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them and they were sore afraid 10 And the angel said unto them Fear not for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a signe unto you Ye shall finde the babe wrapped in swadling clothes lying in a manger 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying 14 Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace good will towards men 15 And it came to pass as the angels were gone away from them into heaven the shepherds said one to another Let us now go even unto Bethlehem and see this thing which is come to pass which the Lord hath made known unto us 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the babe lying in a manger 17 And when they had seen it they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this childe 18 And all they that heard it wondred at those things which were told them by the shepherds 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in VI. 1 David fetcheth the ark from Kirjath-jearim on a new cart 6Vzzah is smitten at Perez-uzzah 11 God blesseth Obed-edom for the ark 12 David bringing the ark into Zion with sacrifices danceth before it for which Michal despiseth him 17 He placeth it in a tabernacle with great joy and feasting 20 Michal reproving David for his religious joy is childless to her death AGain David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel thirty thousand 2 And * 1 Chr. 1â— 5 6. David arose and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah to bring up from thence the ark of God ‖ Or at which the name even the name of the LORD of hosts was called upon whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the Cherubims 3 And they †Heb. with let the ark of God upon a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in ‖ Or the hill Gibeah and Uzzah and Ahio the sons of Abinadah drave the new cart 4 And they brought it out of * Heb. made to ride the house of Abinadah which was at Gibeah †Heb. broken accompanying the ark of God and Ahio went before the ark 5 And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir-wood even on harps and on psalteries and on timbrels and on cornets and on cymbals 6 ¶ And * 1 Sam. 7.1 when they came to Nachons threshing-door Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it for the exen ‖ Or stumbled shook it 7 And the anger of the ‖ Or rafiâ—â—â—ss LORD was kindled against Uzzah and God smote him there for his errour and there he died by the ark of God 8 And David was displeased because the LORD had †Heb. stretched made a breach upon Uzzah and he called the name of the place * 1 Chr. 13.9 †That is The breach of Vzzah Perez-uzzah to this day 9 And David was afraid of the LORD that day and said How shall the ark of the LORD come to me 10 So David would not remove the ark of the LORD unto him into the city of David but David carried it aside into the house of Obed edom the Gittite 11 And the ark of the LORD continued in the house of Obed edom the Gittite three moneths and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and all his houshold 12 ¶ And it was told king David saying The LORD hath blessed the house of Obed-edom and all that pertaineth unto him because of the ark of God * 1 Chr. â—â— 25 So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with gladness 13 And it was so that when they that bare the ark of the LORD had gone six paces he sacrificed oxen and fatlings 14 And David danced before the LORD with all his might and David was girded with a linen ephod 15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet 16 And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David Michal Sauls daughter looked through a window saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD and she despised him in her heart 17 ¶ And they brought in the ark of the

Jehoram Joram was returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians †Heb. smote had given him when he fought with Hazael king of Syria And Jehu said If it be your minds then †Heb. let no escaper 80 c. let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in Jezreel 16 So Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel for Joram lay there and Ahaziah king of Judah was come down to see Joram 17 And there stood a watchman on the tower in Jezreel and he spied the company of Jehu as he came and said I see a company And Joram said Take an hors-man and send to meet them and let him say Is it peace 18 So there went one on hors-back to meet him and said Thus saith the king Is it peace And Jehu said What hast thou to do with peace turn thee behinde me And the watchman told saying The messenger came to them but he cometh not again 19 Then he sent out a second on hors-back which came to them and said Thus saith the king Is it peace And Jehu answered What hast thou to do with peace turn thee behinde me 20 And the watchman told saying He came even unto them and cometh not again and the ‖ Or marching driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi for he driveth †Heb. in maâ—â—â—ss furiously 21 And Joram said †Heb. hinde Make ready And his chariot was made ready And Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out each in his chariot and they went out against Jehu and †Heb. found met him in the portion of Naboth the Jezreelite 22 And it came to pass when Joram saw Jehu that he said Is it peace Jehu And he answered What peace so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witcherafts are so many 23 And Joram turned his hands and fled and said to Ahaziah There is treachery O Ahaziah 24 And Jehu †Heb. filled his hand with a bowe drew a bowe with his full strength and smote Jehoram between his arms and the arrow went out at his heart and he †Heb. bowed sunk down in his chariot 25 Then said Jehu to Bidkar his captain Take up and cast him in the portion of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite for remember how that when I and thou rode together after Ahab his father * 1 King 21.29 the LORD laid this burden upon him 26 Surely I have seen yesterday the †Heb. blouds bloud of Naboth and the bloud of his sons saith the LORD and I will requite thee in this ‖ Or portion plat saith the LORD Now therefore take and cast him into the plat of ground according to the word of the LORD 27 ¶ But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this he fled by the way of the garden-house and Jehu followed after him and said Smite him also in the chariot And they did so at the going up to Gur which is by Ibleam and he fled to Megiddo and died there 28 And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem and buried him in his sepulchre with his fathers in the city of David 29 And in the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab began Ahaziah to reign over Judah 30 ¶ And when Jehu was come to Jezreel Jezebel heard of it and she †Heb. put her eyes in painting painted her face and tired her head and looked out at a window 31 And as Jehu entred in at the gate she said Had Zimri peace who slew his master 32 And he lift up his face to the window and said Who is on my side who And there looked out to him two or three ‖ Or chamberlains eunuchs 33 And he said Throw her down So they threw her down and some of her bloud was sprinkled on the wall and on the horses and he trod her under foot 34 And when he was come in he did eat and drink and said Go see now this cursed woman and bury her for she is a kings daughter 35 And they went to bury her but they found no more of her then the scull and the feet and the palms of her hands 36 Wherefore they came again and told him and he said This is the word of the LORD which he spake †Heb. by the hand of by his servant Elijah the Tishbite saying * 1 King 21.23 In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel 37 And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel so that they shall not say This is Jezebel CHAP. X. 1 Jehu by his letters causeth seventy of Ahabs children to be beheaded 8 He excuseth the fact by the prophesie of Elijah 12 At the shearing-house he slayeth two and fourty of Abazjahs brethren 15 He taketh Jehonadab into his company 18 By subtilty he destroyeth all the worshippers of Baal 29 Jehu followeth Jeroboams sins 32 Hazael oppresseth Israel 34 Jeboahaz succeedeth Jehu ANd Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria and Jehu wrote letters and sent to Samaria unto the rulers of Jezreel to the elders and to †Heb. nourishâ—â—â— them that brought up Ahabs children saying 2 Now assoon as this letter cometh to you seeing your masters sons are with you and there are with you chariots and horses a fenced city also and armour 3 Look even out the best and meetest of your masters sons and set him on his fathers throne and fight for your masters house 4 But they were exceedingly afraid and said Behold two kings stood not before him how then shall we stand 5 And he that was over the house and he that was over the city the elders also and the bringers up of the children sent to Jehu saying We are thy servants and will do all that thou shalt bid us we will not make any king do thou that which is good in thine eyes 6 Then he wrote a letter the second time to them saying If ye be †Heb. for me mine and if ye will hearken unto my voice take ye the heads of the men your masters sons and come to me to Jezreel by to morrow this time now the kings sons being seventy persons were with the great men of the city which brought them up 7 And it came to pass when the letter came to them that they took the kings sons and slew seventy

Ch. 59.3 †Heb. blouds bloud 16 ¶ Wash ye make you clean put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes * 1 Pet. 3.11 cease to do evil 17 Learn to do well seek judgement ‖ Or rightâ—â—â— relieve the oppressed judge the fatherless plead for the widow 18 Come now and let us reason together saith the LORD though your sins be as scarlet they shall be as white as snow though they be red like crimson they shall be as wool 19 If ye be willing and obedient ye shall eat the good of the land 20 But if ye refuse and rebel ye shall be devoured with the sword for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it 21 ¶ How is the faithful city become an harlot it was full of judgement righteousness lodged in it but now murderers 22 Thy silver is become dross thy wine mixt with water 23 Thy princes are rebellious and companions of theeves every one loveth gifts and followeth after rewards they * Jer. 5.28 Zech. 7 1â— judge not the fatherless neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them 24 Therefore saith the Lord the LORD of hosts the mighty One of Israel Ah I will ease me of mine adversaries and avenge me of mine enemies 25 ¶ And I will turn my hand upon thee and †Heb. according to pureness purely purge away thy dross and take away all thy tin 26 And I will restore thy judges as at the first and thy counsellours as at the beginning afterward thou shalt be called The city of righteousnes the faithful city 27 Zion shall be redeemed with judgement and ‖ Or they that return of her her converts with righteousness 28 ¶ And the * Job 31.3 Ps 1.6 5.6 73.27 92.9 and 104.35 †Heb. breaking destruction of the transgressours and of the sinners shall be together and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed 29 For they shall be ashamed of the oaks which ye have desired and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen 30 For ye shall be as an oak whose leaf fadeth and as a garden that hath no water 31 And the strong shall be as tow ‖ Or and his work and the maker of it as a spark and they shall both burn together and none shall quench them CHAP. II. 1 Isaiah prophesieth the coming of Christs kingdom â— Wickedness is the cause of Gods forsaking 10 He exhorteth to fear because of the powerful effect of Gods majesty THe word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem 2 And * Mic. 4 â— c. it shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the LORD house shall be ‖ Or prepared established in the top of the mountains and shall be exalted above the hills and all nations shall flow unto it 3 And many people shall go and say Come ye and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD to the house of the God of Jacob and he will teach us of his ways and we will walk in his paths for out of Zion shall go forth the law and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem 4 And he shall judge among the nations and shall rebuke many people and they shall beat their swords into plow-shares and their spears into ‖ Or sithes pruning-hooks nation shall not lift up sword against nation neither shall they learn war any more 5 O house of Jacob come ye and let us walk in the light of the LORD 6 Therefore thou hast forsaken thy people the house of Jacob because they be replenished ‖ Or more then the east from the east and are sooth-sayers like the Philistines and they ‖ Or abound with the children c. please themselves in the children of strangers 7 Their land also is full of silver and gold neither is there any end of their treasures their land is also full of horses neither is there any end of their chariots 8 Their land also is full of idols they worship the work of their own hands that which their own fingers have made 9 And the mean man boweth down and the great man humbleth himself therefore forgive them not 10 ¶ Enter into the rock and hide thee in the dust for fear of the LORD and for the glory of his majesty 11 The * Chap. 5.15 lofty looks of man shall be humbled and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day 12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty and upon every one that is lifted up and he shall be brought low 13 And upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up and upon all the oaks of Bashan 14 And upon all the high mountains and upon all the hills that are lifted up 15 And upon every high towre and upon every senced wall 16 And upon all the ships of Tarthish and upâ—n all †Heb. pictures of dâ—sire pleasant pictures 17 And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down and the haughtiness of men shall be made low and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day 18 And ‖ Or the idols shall utterly pass away the idols he shall utterly abolish 19 And they shall go into the * Hoâ— 10.8 Lu. 23.30 Rev. 6.16 9.6 holes of the rocks and into the caves of †Heb. the â—ust the earth for fear of the LORD and for the glory of his majesty when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth 20 In that day a man shall cast †Heb. the idols of his silvâ—r c. his idols of silver and his idols of gold ‖ Or which they made for him which they made each one for himself to worship to the moles and to the bats 21 To go into the clefts of the rocks and into the tops of the ragged rocks for fear of the LORD and for the glory of his majesty when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth 22 Cease ye from man whose breath is in his nostrils for wherein is he to be accounted of CHAP. polished scattered and pâ—eled to a people terrible from their beginning hitherto ‖ Or a nation that metest out and treadeth down †Heb. a nation of line line and treading under foot a nation meted out and troden down ‖ Or whose land the rivers despist whose land the rivers have spoiled 3 All ye inhabitants of the world and dwellers on the earth see ye when he lifteth up an ensigne on the mountains and when he bloweth a trumpet hear ye 4 For so the LORD said unto me I will take my rest and I will consider in my dwelling-place like a clear heat ‖ Or regard my set dwelling upon herbs and like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest 5 For afore the harvest when the bud is perfect and the sowre grape is ripening in the flower he shall both cut off the sprâ—gs with pruning-houks and take away and cut down the branches 6 They shall be left together unto the fowls of the mountains and to the beasts of the earth and the fowls shall summer upon them and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them 7 ¶ In that time shall the present be brought unto the LORD of hosts of a people ‖ Or after rain scattered and peeled and from a people terrible from their beginning hitherto a nation meted out and troden under foot ‖ Or out-spread and polished whole land the rivers have spotled to the place of the name of the LORD of hosts the mount Zion CHAP. XIX 1 The confusion of Egypt 11 The foolishness of their princes 18 The calling of Egypt to the church 23 The covenant of Egypt Aâ—â—â—ria Israel THe burden of Egypt Behold the LORD rideth upon a swift cloud and shall come into Egypt and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at his presence and the heart of Egypt shall melt in the midst of it 2 And I will †Heb. mingle set the Egyptians against the Egyptians and they shall fight every one against his brother and every one against his neighbour city against city and kingdom against kingdom 3 And the spirit of Egypt †Heb. shall be emptied shall fail in the midst thereof and I will †Heb. swallow up destroy the counsel thereof and they shall seek to the idols to the charmers and to them that have familiar spirits and to the wizards 4 And the Egyptians will I ‖ Or shut up give over into the hand of a cruel lord and a fierce king shall rule over them saith the Lord the LORD of hosts 5 And the waters shall fail from the sea and the river shall be wasted and dried up 6 And they shall turn the rivers far away and the brooks of defence shall be emptied and dried up the reeds and flags shall wither 7 The paper-reeds by the brooks by the mouth of the brooks and every thing sown by the brooks shall wither be driven away †Heb. aâ—â— shall not be and be no more 8 The fishers also shall mourn and all they that cast angle into the brooks shall lament and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish 9 Moreover they that work in fine flax and they that weave ‖ Or white works net-works shall be confounded 10 And they shall be broken in the †Heb. foundations purposes thereof all that make sluces and ponds †Heb. of â—â—at 〈…〉 for fish 11 ¶ Surely the princes of Zoan are foâ—ls the counsel of the wise counsellours of Pharaoh is become brutish how say ye unto Pharaoh I am the son of the wise the son of ancient kings 12 Where are they where are thy wise men and let them tell thee now and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt 13 The princes of Zoan are become fools the princes of Noph are deceived they have also seduced Egypt even ‖ Or governours †Heb. corners they that are the stay of the tribes thereof 14 The LORD hath mingled †Heb. a spirit of â—â—â—versities a perverse spirit in the midst thereof and they have caused Egyp to err in every work thereof as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit 15 Neither shall there be any work for Egypt which the head or tail branch or rush may do 16 In that day shall Egypt be like unto women and it shall be afraid and fear because of the shaking of the hand of the LORD of hosts which he shaketh over it 17 And the land of Judah shall be a terrour unto Egypt every one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself because of the counsel of the LORD of hosts which he hath determined against it 18 ¶ In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak †Heb. 〈◊〉 lip the language of Canaan and swear to the LORD of hosts one shall be called the city ‖ Or of Hâ—res or of the 〈◊〉 of destruction 19 In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD 20 And it shall be for a signâ— and for a witness unto the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressours and he shall send them a saviour and a great one and he shall deliver them 21 And the LORD shall be known to Egypt and the Egyptians shall know the LORD in that day and shall do sacrifice and oblation yea they shall vow a vow unto the LORD and perform it 22 And the LORD shall smite Egypt he shall smite and heal it and they shall return even to the LORD and he shall be intreated of them and shall heal them 23 ¶ In that dry shall there be a high-way out of Egypt to Assyria and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt and the Egyptian into Assyria and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians 24 In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria even a blessing in the midst of the land 25 Whom the LORD of host shall bless saying Blessed be Egypt my people and Assyria the work of my hands and Israel mine inheritance CHAP. XX. A type prefiguring the shameful captivity of Egypt and Ethiopia IN the year that Tartan came unto Ashdod when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him and fought against Ashdod and took it 2 At the same time spake the LORD †Heb. by the hand of Isaiâ—â— by Isaiah the son of Amoz saying Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loyns and put off thy shoe from thy foot And he did so walking naked and bare-foot 3 And the LORD said Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and bare-foot three years for a signe and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia 4 So shall the king of Assyria lead away †Heb. the captivity of Egypt the Egyptians prisoners and

LXI 1 The office of Christ 4 The forwardness 7 and blessings of the faithful THE * Luke 4.18 spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek he hath sent me to blinde up the broken-hearted to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to them hat are bound 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD and the day of vengeance of our God to comfort all that mourn 3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion to give unto them beauty for ashes the oyl of joy for mourning the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness that they might be called trees of righteousness the planting of the LORD that he might be glorified 4 ¶ And they shall * Chap. 58.12 build the old wastes they shall raise up the former desolations and they shall repart the waste cities the desolations of many generations 5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks and the sons of the alien shall be your plowman and your vine-dressers 6 But ye shall be named the priests of the LORD men shall call you the ministers of our God * Chap. 60.6 ye
mercies towards me are they restrained 16 Doubtless thou art our father though Abraham be ignorant of us and Israel acknowledge us not thou O LORD art our father ‖ Or our redeemer from everlasting is thy name our redeemer thy name is from everlasting 17 ¶ O LORD why hast thou made us to err from thy ways and hardned our heart from the fear Return for the servants sake the tribes of thine inheritance 18 The people of thy holiness have possessed it but a little while our adversaries have troden down thy sanctuary 19 We are thine thou never bearest rule over them ‖ Or thy name was not called upon them they were not called by thy name CHAP. LXIV 1 The church prayeth for the illustration of Gods power 5 Celebrating Gods mercy it maketh confession of their natural corruptions 9 It complaineth of their affliction OH that thou wouldest rent the heavens that thou wouldest come down that the mountains might flow down at thy presence 2 As when †Heb. the fire of meltings the melting fire burneth the fire causeth the waters to boyl to make thy name known to thine adversaries that the nations may tremble at thy presence 3 When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for thou camest down the mountains flowed down at thy presence 4 For since the beginning of the world * Psal 31 19. 1 Cor. 2.9 men have not heard nor perceived by the ear neither hath the eye ‖ Or seen a God besides thee which doeth so for him c. seen O God besides thee what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him 5 Thou meetest him that rejoyceth and worketh righteousness those that remember thee in thy ways behold thou art wroth for we have sinned in those is continuance and we shall be saved 6 But we are all as an unclean thing and all our righteousnesses art as filthy rags and we all do * Psal 90.5 6. fade as a leaf and our iniquities like the wind have taken us away 7 And there is none that calleth upon thy name that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee for thou hast hid thy face from us and hast †Heb. melted consumed us because of our iniquities 8 But now O LORD thou art our father we are the clay and thou our potter and we all are the work of thy hand 9 ¶ Be not * Pl. 79.8 wroth very sore O LORD neither remember iniquity for ever behold see we beseech thee we are all thy people 10 Thy holy cities are a wilderness Zion is a wilderness Jerusalem a desolation 11 Our holy and our beautiful house where our fathers praised thee is burnt up with fire and all our pleasant things are laid waste 12 Wilt thou refrain thy self for these things O LORD wilt thou hold thy peace and afflict us very sore CHAP. Sout up given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces they have made a noise in the house of the LORD as in the day of a solemn feast 8 The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion he hath stretched out a line he hath not withdrawn his hand from †Heb. swallowing up destroying therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament they languished together 9 Her gates are sunk into the ground he hath destroyed and broken her bars her king and her princes are among the Gentiles the law is no more her * Ps 74.9 prophets also finde no vision from the LORD 10 The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground and keep silence they have cast up dust upon their heads they have girded themselves with sackcloth the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground 11 Mine eyes do fail with tears my bowels are troubled my liver is poured upon the earth for the destruction of the daughter of my people because the children and the sucklings ‖ Or saint swoon in the streets of the city 12 They say to their mothers Where is corn and wine when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city when their soul was poured out into their mothers bosom 13 What thing shall I take to witness for thee what thing shall I liken to thee O daughter of Jerusalem what shall I equal to thee that I may comfort thee O virgin daughter of Zion for thy breach is great like the sea who can heal thee 14 Thy * Jer. 2.8 and 5.31 and 14.14 and 23.16 prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee and they have not discovered thine iniquity to turn away thy captivity but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment 15 All that pass †Heb. by the way by clap their hands at thee they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem saying Is this the câ—ty that men call * Ps 48.2 the perfection of beauty the joy of the whole earth 16 All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee they hiss and gnash the teeth they say We have swallowed her up certainly this is the day that we looked for we have found we have seen it 17 The LORD hath done that which he had * Lev. 26.16 devised he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old he hath thrown down and hath not pitied and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoyce over thee he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries 18 Their heart cried unto the Lord O wall of the daughter of Zion * Jer. 14.17 Ch. â— 16 let tears run down like a river day and night give thy self no rest let not the apple of thine eye cease 19 Arise cry out in the night in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord lift up thy hands towards him for the life of thy young children that faint for hunger in the top of every street 20 ¶ Behold O LORD and consider to whom thou hast done this shall the women eat their fruit and children ‖ Or swaddled with their hands of a span long shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the LORD 21 The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets my virgins and my young men are fain by the sword thou hast slain them in the day of thy anger thou hast killed and not pitied 22 Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrours round about so that in the day of the LORDS anger none escaped nor remained those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed CHAP. Sir what are these 45 He answered and said unto me These be they that have put off the mortal clothing and put on the immortal and have confessed the name of God now are they crowned and receive palms 46 Then said I unto the angel What young person is it that crowneth them and giveth them palms in their hands 47 So he answered and said unto me It is the Son of God whom they have confessed in the world Then began I greatly to commend them that stood so stifly for the name of the Lord. 48 Then the angel said unto me Go thy way and tell my people what manner of things and how great wonders of the Lord thy God thou hast seen CHAP. from them a wicked heart that thy law might bring forth fruit in them 21 For the first Adam bearing a wicked heart transgressed and was overcome and so be all they that are born of him 22 Thus infirmity was made permanent and the law also in the heart of the people with the malignity of the root so that the good departed away and the evil abode still 23 So the times passed away and the years were brought to an end * 1 Sam. 16.13 then didst thou raise thee up a servant called David 24 * 2 Sam. 5.2 7.5 13. Whom thou commandedst to build a city unto thy name and to offer incense and oblations unto thee therein 25 When this was done many years then they that inhabited the city forsook thee 26 And in all things did even as Adam and all his generations had done for they also had a wicked heart 27 And so thou gavest thy city over into the hands of thine enemies 28 Are their deeds then any better that inhabit Babylon that they should therefore have the dominion over Sion 29 For when I came thither and had seen impieties without number then my soul saw many evil doers in this thirtieth year so that my heart failed me 30 For I have seen how thou sufferest them sinning and hast spared wicked doers and hast destroyed thy people and hast preserved thine enemiâ—â— and hast not signified it 31 ‖ Or I conceive I do not remember how this way may be left Are they then of Babylon better then they of Sion 32 Or is there any other people that knoweth thee besides Israel or what generation hath so beleeved thy covenants as Jacob 33 And yet their reward appeareth not and their labour hath no fruit for I have gone here and there through the heathen and I see that they ‖ Or abound flow in wealth and think not upon thy commandments 34 Weigh thou therefore our wickedness now in the balance and theirs also that dwell in the world and so shall thy name no where be found but in Israel 35 Or when was it that they which dwell upon the earth have not sinned in thy sight or what people hath so kept thy commandments 36 Thou shalt finde that Israel by name hath kept thy precepts but not the heathen CHAP. IV. 1 The angel declareth the ignorance of Esdras in Gods judgements 13 and adviseth him not to meddle with things above his reach 23 Nevertheless Esdras asketh divers questions and receiveth answers to them ANd the angel that was sent unto me whose name was Uriel gave me an answer 2 And said Thy heart hath gone too far in this world and thinkest thou to â—omprehend the way of the most High 3 Then said I Yea my lord and he answered me and said I am sent to shâ—w thee three ways and to set forth three similitudes before thee 4 Whereof if thou canst declare me one I will shew thee also the way that thou desirest to see and I shall shew thee from whence the wicked heart cometh 5 And I said Tell on my lord Then said he unto me Go thy way weigh me the weight of the fire or measure me the blast of the wind or call me again the day that is past 6 Then answered I and said What man is able to do that that thou shouldest ask such things of me 7 And he said unto me If I should ask thee how great dwellings are in the midst of the sea or how many springs are in the beginning of the deep or how many springs are above the firmament or which are the outgoings of paradise 8 Peradventure thou wouldest say unto me I never went down into the deep nor as yet into hell neither did I ever climbe up into heaven 9 Nevertheless now have I asked thee but onely of the fire and wind and of the day where-through thou hast passed and of things from which thou canst not be separated and yet canst thou give me no answer of them 10 He said moreover unto me Thine own things and such as are grown up with thee canst thou not know 11 How should thy vessel then be able to comprehend the way of the Highest and the world being now outwardly corrupted to understand the ‖ Or incorruption corruption that is evident in my sight 12 Then said I unto him It were better that we were not at all then that we should live still in wickedness and to suffer and not to know wherefore 13 He answered me and said I went into a forest into a plain and the * Judg. 9.8 2 Chr. 25.18 trees took counsel 14 And said Come let us go and make war against the sea that it may depart away before us and that we may make us more woods 15 The flouds of the sea also in like manner took counsel and said Come let us go up and subdue the woods of the plain that there also we may make us another countrey 16 The thought of the wood was in vain for the fire came and consumed it 17 The thought of the flouds of the sea came likewise to nought for the sand stood up and stopped them 18 If thou wert judge now betwixt these two whom wouldest thou begin to justifie or whom wouldest thou condemn 19 I answered and said Verily it is a foolish thought that they have both devised for ‖ Or the land the ground is given unto the wood and the sea also hath his place to bear his ‖ Or waves flouds 20 Then answered he me and said Thou hast given a right judgement but thy judgest thou not thyself also 21 For like as ‖ the land the ground is given unto the wood and the sea to his flouds even so * Is 55.8 9. Joh. 3.31 1 Cor. 2.14 they that dwell upon the earth may understand nothing but that which is upon the earth and he that dwelleth above the heavens may onely understand the things that are above the height of the heavens 22 Then answered I and said I beseech thee O Lord let me have understanding 23 For it was not my minde to be curious of the high things but of such as pass by us daily namely wherefore Israel is given up as a reproach to the heathen and for what cause the people whom thou hast loved is given over unto ungodly nations and why the law of our forefathers is brought to nought and the written covenants come ‖ Or no where to none effect 24 And we pass away out of the world as grashoppers and our life is astonishment and fear and we are not worthy to obtain mercy 25 What will he then do unto his name whereby we are called of these things have I asked 26 Then answered he me and said The more thou searchest the more thou shalt marvel for the world hasteth fast to pass away 27 And cannot comprehend the things that are promised to the righteous in time to
and come not nigh me And he heard what I said and went from me 20 And so I fasted seven days mourning and weeping like as Uriel the angel commanded me 21 And after seven days so it was that the thoughts of my heart were very grievous unto me again 22 And my soul recovered the spirit of understanding and I began to talk with the most High again 23 And said O Lord that bearest rule of every wood of the earth and of all the trees thereof thou hast chosen thee one onely vine 24 And of all lands of the whole world thou hast chosen thee one pit and of all the flowers thereof one lilie 25 And of all the depths of the sea thou hast filled thee one river and of all builded cities thou hast hallowed Sion unto thyself 26 And of all the fowl that are created thou hast named thee one dove and of Now when I had spoken these words the angel that came to me the night afore was sent unto me 32 And said unto me Hear me and I will instruct thee hearken to the thing that I say and I shall tell thee more 33 And I said Speak on my Lord then said he unto me Thou art sore troubled in minde for Israels sake lovest thou that people better then he that made them 34 And I said No Lord but of very grief have I spoken for my reins pain me every hour while I labour to comprehend the way of the most High and to seek out part of his judgement 35 And he said unto me Thou canst not and I said Wherefore Lord whereunto was I born then or why was not my mothers womb then my grave that I might not have seen the travel of Jacob and the wearisom toyl of the stock of Israel 36 And he said unto me Number me the things that are not yet come gather me together the drops that are scattered abroad make me the flowers green again that are withered 37 Open me the places that are closed and bring me forth the winds that in them are shut up shew me the image of a voice and then I will declare to thee the thing that thou labourest to know 38 And I said O Lord that bearest rule who may know these things but he that hath not his dwelling with men 39 As for me I am unwise how may I then speak of these things whereof thou askest me 40 Then said he unto me Like as thou canst do none of these things that I have spoken of even so canst thou not finde out my judgement or in the end the love that I have promised unto my people 41 And I said Behold O Lord yet art thou nigh unto them that be reserved till the end and what shall they do that have been before me or we that be now or they that shall come after us 42 And he said unto me I will liken my judgement unto a rings like as there is no slackness of the last even so there is no swiftness of the first 43 So I answered and said Couldst thou not make those that have been made and be now and that are for to come at once that thou mightest shew thy judgement the sooner 44 Then answered he me and said The creature may not haste above the maker neither may the world hold them at once that shall be created therein 45 And I said As thou hast said unto thy servant that thou which given life to all hast given life at once to the creature that thou hast created and the creature bare it even so it might now also bear them that now be present at once 46 And he said unto me Ask the womb of a woman and say unto her If thou bringest forth children why dost thou it not together but one after another pray her therefore to bring forth ten children at once 47 And I said She cannot but must do it by distance of time 48 Then said he unto me Even so have I given the womb of the earth to those that be sown in it in their times 49 For like as a young Wherefore are not they whom thou hast now brought forth like those that were before but less of stature 53 And she shall answer thee They that be born in the strength of youth are of one fashion and they that are born in the time of age when the womb faileth are otherwise 54 Consider thou therefore also how that ye are less of stature then those that were before you 55 And so are they that come after you less then ye as the creatures which now begin to be old and have passed over the strength of youth 56 Then said I Lord I beseech thee if I have found favour in thy sight shew thy servant by whom thou visitest thy creature CHAP. VI. 1 Gods purpose is eternal 8 The next world shall follow this immediately 13 What shall fall out at the last 31 He is promised more knowledge 38 and reckoneth up the works of the creation 57 and complaineth that they have no part in the world for whom it was made ANd he said unto me In the beginning when the ‖ Or cirâ—â—e of the earth earth was made before the borders of the world stood or ever the winds blew 2 Before it thundred and lightned or ever the foundations of paradise were laid 3 Before the fair flowers were seen or ever the moveable powers were established before the innumerable multitude of angels were gathered together 4 Or ever the heights of the air were lifted up before the measures of the firmament were named or ever the chimneys in Sion were hot 5 And ere the present years were sought out and or ever the inventions of them that now sin were turned before they were sealed that have gathered faith for a treasure 6 Then did I consider these things and they all were made through me
upon the wicked 12 upon Egypt 28 An horrible vision 43 Babylon and Asia are threatned BEhold speak thou in the ears of my people the words of prophesie which I will put in thy mouth saith the Lord. 2 And cause them to be written in paper for they are faithful and true 3 Fear not the imaginations against thee let not the incredulity of them trouble thee that speak against thee 4 For all the unfaithful shall die in their unfaithfulness 5 Behold saith the Lord I will bring plagues upon the world the sword famine death and destruction 6 For wickedness hath exceedingly polluted the whose earth and their hurtful works are fulfilled 7 Therefore faith the Lord 8 I will hold my tongue no more as touching their wickedness which they profanely commit neither will I suffer them in those things in which they wickedly exercise themselves behold the * Rev. 6.10 â— 19.2 innocent and râ—ghteouâ— bloâ—d cryeth unto me and the souls of the just complain continually 9 And therefore faith the Lord. smitten with the plague and punishment that God shall bring upon it 13 They that till the ground shall mourn for their seeds shall fail through the blasting and hail and with a fearful constellation 14 Wo to the world and them that dwell therein 15 For the sword and their destruction draweth nigh and one people shall stand up to fight against another and swords in their hands 16 For there shall be sedition among men and invading one another they shall not regard their kings nor princes and the course of their actions shall stand in their power 17 A man shall desire to go into a city and shall not be able 18 For because of their pride the cities shall be troubled the houses shall be destroyed and men shall be afraid 19 A man shall have no pity upon his neighbour but shall destroy their houses with the sword and spoil their goods because of the lack of bread and for great tribulation 20 Behold saith God I will call together all the kings of the earth to reverence me which are from the rising of the sun from the south from the east and Libanus to turn themselves one against another and repay the things that they have done to them 21 Like as they do yet this day unto my chosen so will I do also and recompense in their bosom Thus saith the Lord God 22 My right hand shall not spare the sinners and my sword shall not cease over them that shed innocent bloud upon the earth 23 The fire is gone forth from his wrath and hath consumed the foundations of the earth and the sinners like the straw that is kindled 24 Wo to them that sin and keep not my commandments saith the Lord 25 I will not spare them go your way ye children from the power defile not my sanctuary 26 For the Lord knoweth all them that sin against him and therefore delivereth he them unto death and destruction 27 For now are the plagues come upon the whole earth and ye shall remain in them for God shall not deliver you because ye have finned against him 28 Behold an horrible vision and the appearance thereof from the east 29 Where the nations of the dragons of Arabia shall come out with many chariots and the multitude of them shall be carried as the wind upon earth that all they which hear them may fear and tremble 30 Also the Carmanians raging in wrath shall go forth as the wilde bores of the wood and with great power shall they come and joyn battel with them and shall waste a portion of the land of the Assyrians 31 And then shall the dragons have the upper hand remembring their nature and if they shall turn themselves conspiring together in great power to persecute them 32 Then these shall be troubled and keep silence through their power and shall flee 33 And from the land of the Assyrians shall the enemy besiege them and consume some of them and in their host shall be fear and dread and strife ‖ Or against among their kings 34 Behold clouds from the east and from the north unto the south and they are very horrible to look upon full of wrath and storm 35 They shall smite one upon another and they shall smite down a great multitude of stars upon the earth even their own star and bloud shall be from the sword unto the belly 36 And dung of men unto the camels ‖ Or pastern or litter hough 37 And there shall be great fearfulness and trembling upon earth and they that see the wrath shall be afraid and trembling shall come upon them 38 And then shall there come stirred to cause fear toward the east and west wind shall be destroyed 40 The great and mighty clouds shall be lifted up full of wrath and the star that they may make all the earth afraid and them that dwell therein and they shall pour out over every high and eminent place and horrible star 41 Fire and hail and flying swords and many waters that all fields may be full and all rivers with the abundance of great waters 42 And they shall break down the cities and walls mountains and hills trees of the wood and grass of the medows and their corn 43 And they shall go stedfastly unto Babylon and ‖ Or destroy make her afraid 44 They shall come to her and besiege her the star and all wrath shall they pour out upon her then shall the dust and smoke go up unto the heaven and all they that be XXVI 1 A good wife 4 and a good conscience do glad men 6 A wicked wife is a fearful thing 13 Of good and bad wives 28 Of three things that are grievous 29 Merehants and buksters are not without sin BLessed is the man that hath a vertuous wife for the number of his days shall be double 2 A vertuous woman rejoyceth her husband and he shall fulfil the years of his life in peace 3 A good wife is a good portion which shall be given in the portion of them that fear the Lord. 4 Whether a man be rich or poor if he have a good heart toward the Lord he shall at all times rejoyce with a cheerful countenance 5 There be three things that mine heart feareth and for the fourth I was sore afraid †Gr. an evil report the slander of a city the gathering together of an unruly multitude and a false accusation all these are worse then death 6 But a grief of heart sorrow is a woman that is jealous over another woman a scourge of the tongue which communicateth with all 7 An evil wife is ‖ Or a yoke of oâ—en a yoke shaken to and fro he that hath hold of her is as though he held a scorpion 8 A drunken woman and a gadder abroad causeth great anger and she will not cover her own shame 9 The whoredom of a woman may be known in her haughty looks and eye-lids 10 * Chap. 42.11 If thy daughter be shameless keep her in straitly lest she abuse herself through overmuch liberty 11 Watch over an impudent eye and marvel not if she trespass against thee 12 She will open her mouth as a thirsty traveller when he hath found a fountain and drink of every water near her by every ‖ Or stake hedge will she sit down and open her quiver against everâ— arrow 13 The grace of a wife delighteth her husband and her discretion will fat his bones 14 A silent and loving woman is a gift of the Lord and there is nothing so much worth as a minde well instructed 15 A shamefacâ—d and faithful woman is a double grace and her continent minde cannot be valued 16 As the sun when it ariseth †Gr. in the highest places of the Lord. in the high heaven so is the beauty of a good wife in the ‖ Or ornament ordering of her house 17 As the clear light is upon the holy candlestick so is the beauty of the face ‖ Or in constant age in ripe age 18 As the golden pillars are upon the sockets of silver so are the ‖ Or comely fair feet with a constant ‖ Or breast heart 19 My son keep the flower of thine age sound and give not thy strength to strangers 20 When thou hast gotten a fruitful possession through all the field sowe it with thine own seed trusting in the goodness of thy stock 21 So thy race which thou leavest shall be magnified having the confidence of their good descent 22 An harlot shall be accounted as ‖ Or a swinâ— spittle but a married woman is a towre against death to her husband 23 A wicked woman is given as a portion to a wicked man but a godly woman is given to him that feareth the Lord. 24 A dishonest woman contemneth shame but an honest woman will reverence her husband 25 A shameless woman shall be counted as a dog but she that is shamefac'd will fear the Lord. 26 A woman that honoureth her husband shall be judged wise of all but she that dishonoureth him in her pride-shall be counted ungodly of all 27 A loud-crying woman and a scold shall be sought out to drive away the enemies 28 There be two things that grieve my heart and the third maketh me angry a man of war that suffereth poverty and men of understanding that are not set by and one that returneth from righteousness to sin the Lord prepareth such an one for the sword 29 A merchant shall hardly keep himself from doing wrong and an huckster shall not be freed from sin CHAP. XXXVII 1 How to know friends and counsellours 12 The discretion and wisdom of a godly man blesseth him 27 Learn to refrain thine appetite EVery friend saith I am his friend also but there is a friend which is onely a friend in name 2 Is it not a grief unto death when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy 3 O wicked imagination whence camest thou in to cover the earth with deceit 4 There is a companion which rejoyceth in the prosperity of a friend but in the time of trouble will be against him 5 There is a companion which helpeth his friend for the belly and taketh up the buckler ‖ Or in presence of the enemy against the enemy 6 Forget not thy friend in thy minde and be not unmindful of him in thy riches 7 Every councellour extolleth counsel but there is some that councelleth for himself 8 Beware of a counsellour and know before ‖ Or what use there is of him what need he hath for he will counsel for himself lest he cast the lot upon thee 9 And say unto thee Thy way is good and afterward he stand on the other side to see what shall be fall thee 10 Consult not with one that suspecteth thee and hide thy counsel from such as envy thee 11 Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous neither with a coward in matters of war nor with a merchant concerning exchange nor with a buyer of selling nor with an envious man of thankfulness nor with an unmerciful man touching kindness nor with the slothful for any work nor with an hireling for a year of finishing work nor with an idle servant of much business hearken not unto these in any mattter of counsel 12 But be continually with a godly man whom thou knowest to keep the commandments of the Lord whose minde is according to thy minde and will sorrow with thee if thou shalt miscarry 13 And let the counsel of thine own heart stand for there is no man more faithful unto thee then it 14 For a mans minde is sometime wont to tell him more then seven watchmen that sit above in an high tower 15 And above all this pray to the most High that he will direct thy way in truth 16 Let reason go before every enterprise and counsel before every action 17 The countenance is a signe of changing of the heart 18
carry the dinner that thou hast into Babylon unto Daniel who is in the lions den 35 And Habbacuc said Lord I never saw Babylon neither do I know where the den is 36 Then the angel of the Lord took him by the crown and * Ezek. 8.3 bare him by the hair of his head and through the vehemency of his spirit set him in Babylon over the den 37 And Habbacuc cried saying O Daniel Daniel * 1 Kin. 17.4 take the dinner which God hath sent thee 38 And Daniel said Thou hast remembred me O God neither hast thou forsaken them that seek thee and love thee 39 So Daniel arose and did eat and the angel of the Lord set Habbacuc in his own place again immediately 40 Upon the seventh day the king went to bewail Daniel and when he came to the den he looked in and behold Daniel was sitting 41 Then cried the king with a loud voice saying Great art thou O Lord God of Daniel and there is none other besides thee 42 * Jer. 37.17 And he drew him out and cast those that were the cause of his destruction into the den and they were devoured in a moment before his face ¶ The prayer of MANASSES king of Juda when he was holden captive in Babylon O Lord almighty God of our fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob and of their righteous seed who hast made heaven and earth with all the ornament thereof who hast bound the sea by the word of thy commandment who hast shut up the deep and sealed it by thy terrible and glorious name whom all men fear and tremble before they power for the majesty of thy glory cannot be born and thine angry threatning towards sinners is importable but thy merciful promise is unmeasurable and unsearchable for thou art the most high Lord of great compassion long-suffering very merciful and repentest of the evils of men Thou O Lord according to thy great goodness hast promised repentance and forgiveness to them that have sinned against thee and of thine infinite mercies hast appointed repentance unto sinners that they may be saved Thou therefore O Lord that art the God of the just hast not appointed repentance to the just as to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob which have not sinned against thee but thou hast appointed repentance unto me that am a sinner for I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea My transgressions O Lord are multiplied my transgressions are multiplied and I am not worthy to behold and see the height of heaven for the multitude of mine iniquity I am bowed down with many iron bands that I cannot lift up mine head ‖ Or neither take my breath neither have any release for I have provoked thy wrath and done evil before thee I did not thy will neither kept I thy commandments I have set up abominations and have multiplied offences Now therefore I bow the knee of mine heart beseeching thee of grace I have sinned O Lord I have sinned and I acknowledge mine iniquities wherefore I humbly beseech thee forgive me O Lord forgive me and destroy me not with mine iniquities Be not angry with me for ever by reserving evil for me neither condemn me into the lower parts of the earth For thou art the God even the God of them that repent and in me thou wilt shew all thy goodness for thou wilt save me that am unworthy according to thy great mercy Therefore I will praise thee for ever all the days of my life for all the powers of the heavens do praise thee and thine is the glory for ever and ever Amen ¶ The first book of the MACCABEES CHAP. I. 14 Antiochus gave leave to set up the fashions of the Gentiles in Jerusalem 22 and spoiled it and the temple in it 57 and set up therein the abomination of desolation 63 and slew those that did circumcise their children ANd it hapned after that Alexander son of Philip the Macedonian who came out of the land of ‖ Or Chetbiim Chettiim had smitten Darius king of the Persians and Medes that he reigned in his stead the first over Greece 2 And made many wars and wan many strong holds and slew the kings of the earth 3 And went through to the ends of the earth and took spoils of many nations insomuch that the earth was quiet before him whereupon ‖ Or his heart was exalted and lifted up he was exalted and his heart was lifted up 4 And he gathered a mighty strong host and ruled over countreys and nations and ‖ Or kingdoms which became c. kings who became tributaries unto him 5 And after these things he fell sick and perceived †Gr. that he dieth that he should die 6 Wherefore he called his servants such as were honourable and had been brought up with him from his youth and parted his kingdom among them while he was yet alive 7 So Alexander reigned twelve years and then died 8 And his servants bare rule every one in his place 9 And after his death they all put crowns upon themselves so did their sons after them many years and evils were multiplied in the earth 10 And there came out of them a wicked root Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes son of Antiochus the king who had been an hostage at Rome and he reigned in the hundred and thirty and seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks 11 In those days went there out of Israel wicked men who perswaded many saying Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us for since we departed from them †Gr. many evils have found us we have had much sorrow 12 So this device pleased them well 13 Then certain of the people were so forward herein that they went to the king who gave them licence to do after the ordinances of the heathen 14 Whereupon they ‖ Or set up an open school at Jerusalem built a place of exercise at Jerusalem according to the customs of the heathen 15 And made themselves uncircumcised and forsook the holy covenant and joyned themselves to the heathen and were sold to do mischief 16 Now when the kingdom was established before Antiochus he thought to reign over Egypt that he might have the dominion of two realms 17 Wherefore he entred into Egypt with a great multitude with chariots and elephants and hors-men and a great navy 18 And made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt but Ptolemee was afraid of him and fled and many were wounded to death 19 Thus they got the strong cities in the land of Egypt and he took the spoils thereof 20 And after that Antiochus had smitten Egypt he returned again in the hundred fourty and third year and went up against Israel and Jerusalem with a great multitude 21 And entred proudly into the sanctuary and took away the golden altar and the candlestick of light and all the vessels thereof 22 And the table
them out and stopped up the gates with stones 48 Whereupon Judas sent unto them in peaceable manner saying Let us pass through your land to go into our own countrey and none shall do you any hurt we will onely pass through on foot howbeit they would not open unto him 49 Wherefore Judas commanded a proclamation to be made throughout the host that every man should pitch his tent in the place where he was 50 So the souldiers pitched and assaulted the city all that day and all that night till at the length the city was delivered into his hands 51 Who then slew all the males with the edge of the sword and rased the city and took the spoils thereof and passed through the city over them that were slain 52 After this went they over Jordan into the great plain before Bethsan 53 And Judas gathered together those that ‖ Or went hindmost Num. 10.25 came behinde and ‖ Or comforted or incouraged exhorted the people all the way through till they came into the land of Judea 54 So they went up to mount Sion with joy and gladness where they offered ‖ peace-offerings Joseph Antiq. 12.12 burnt-offerings because not one of them were slain until they had returned in peace 55 Now what time as Judas and Jonathan were in the land of Galaad and Simon his brother in Galilee before Ptolemais 56 Joseph the son of Zacharias and Azarias captains of the garisons heard of the valiant acts and warlike deeds which they had done 57 Wherefore they said Let us also get us a name and go fight against the heathen that are round about us 58 So when they had given charge unto the garison that was with them they went towards Jamnia 59 Then came Gorgias and his men out of the city †Gr. to meet them in battel to fight against them 60 And so it was that Juseph and Azarias were put to flight and pursued unto the borders of Judea and there were slain that day of the people of Israel about two thousand men 61 Thus was there a great overthrow among the children of Israel because they were not obedient unto Judas and his brethren but thought to do some valiant act 62 Moreover these men came not of the seed of those by whose hand deliverance was given unto Israel 63 Howbeit the man Judas and his brethren were greatly renowned in the sight of all Israel and of all the heathen wheresoever their name was heard of 64 Insomuch as the people assembled unto them with joyful acclamations 65 Afterward went Judas forth with his brethren and sought against the children of Esau in the land toward the south where he smote Hebron and the †Gr. daughters towns thereof and pulled down the fortress of it and burnt the towres thereof round about 66 Form thence he removed to go into the land of †Gr. strangers the Philistines and passed through Samaria 67 At that time certain priests desirous to shew their valour were slain in battel for that they went out to fight unadvisedly 68 So Judas turned to Azotus in the land of the Philistines and when he had pulled down their altars and burnt their carved images with fire and spoiled their cities he returned into the land of Judea CHAP. VI. 8 Antiochus dieth 12 and confesseth that he is plagued for the wrong done to Jerusalem 20 Judas besiegeth those in the towre at Jerusalem 28 They procure Antiochus the younger to come into Judea 51 He besiegeth Sion 60 and maketh peace with Israel 61 yet overthroweth the wall of Sion ABout that time king Antiochus travelling through the high countreys heard say that Elymais in the countrey of Persia was a city greatly renowned for riches silver and gold 2 And that there was in it a very rich temple wherein were ‖ Or shields coverings of gold and breast-plates and ‖ Or. armour shields which Alexander son of Philip the Macedonian king who reigned first among the Grecians had left there 3 Wherefore he came and sought to take the city and to spoil it but he was not able because they of the city having had warning thereof 4 Rose up against him in battel so he fled and departed thence with great heaviness and returned to Babylon 5 Moreover there came one who brought him tidings into Persia that the armies which went against the sand of Judea were put to flight 6 And that Lysias who went forth first with a great power was driven away of the Jews and that they were made strong by the armour and power and store of spoils which they had gotten of the armies whom they had destroyed 7 Also that they had pulled down the abomination which he had set up upon the altar in Jerusalem and that they had compassed about the sanctuary with high walls as before and his city Bethsura 8 Now when the king heard these words he was astonished and sore moved whereupon he laid him down upon his bed and fell sick for grief because it had not belfn him as he looked for 9 And there he continued many days for his grief was ever more and more and he made account that he should die 10 Wherefore he called for all his friends and said unto them The sleep is gone from mine eyes and my heart faileth for very care 11 And I thought with my self Into what tribulation am I come and how great a floud of misery is it wherein now I am for I was bountiful and beloved in my power 12 But now I remember the evils that I did at Jerusalem and that I took all the vessels of gold and silver that were therein and sent to destroy the inhabitants of Judea without a cause 13 I perceive therefore that for this cause these troubles are come upon me and behold I perish through great grief in a strange land 14 Then called he for Philip one of his friends whom he made ruler over all his realm 15 And gave him the crown and his robe and his signet to the end ‖ Or he should take his son Antiochus to him he should bring up his son Antiochus and nourish him up for the kingdom 16 So king Antiochus died there in the hundred fourty and ninth year 17 Now when Lysias knew that the king was dead he set up Antiochus his son whom he had brought up being young to reign in his stead and his name he called Eupator 18 About this time they that were in the towre shut up the Israelites round about the sanctuary and sought always their hurt and the strengthning of the heathen 19 Wherefore Judas purposing to destroy them called all the people together to besiege them 20 So they came together and besieged them in the hundred and fiftieth year and he made mounts for shot against them and other engines 21 Howbeit certain of them that were besieged got forth unto whom some ungodly men of Israel joyned themselves 22 And
and the kings forces are defeated by Judas 49 The day of this victory is kept holy every year IN the hundred and one and fiftieth year Demetrius the son of Seleucus departed from Rome and came up with a few men unto ‖ Triposts Joseph Antiq lib. 12. â— 16 a city of the sea-coast and reigned there 2 And as he entred into the †Gr. house of the kingdom of his 〈◊〉 palace of his ancestours so it was that his forces had taken Antiochus and Lysias to bring them unto him 3 Wherefore when he knew it he said Let me not see their faces 4 So his host slew them Now when Demetrius was set upon the throne of his kingdom 5 There came unto him all the wicked and ungodly men of Israel having Alcimus who was desirous to be high priest for their captain 6 And they accused the people to the king saying Judas and his brethren have slain all thy friends and driven us out of our own land 7 Now therefore send some man whom thou trustest and let him go and see what havock he hath made amongst us and in the kings land and let him punish them with all them that aid them 8 Then the king chose Bacchides a friend of the king who ruled beyond the floud and was a great man in the kingdom and faithful to the king 9 And him he sent with the wicked Alcimus whom he made high priest commanded that he should take vengeance of the children of Israel 10 So they departed and came with a great power into the land of Judea where they sent messengers to Judas and his brethren with peaceable words deceitfully 11 But they gave no heed to their words for they saw that they were come with a great power 12 Then did there assemble unto Alcimus and Bacchides a company of ‖ Or officers governours chiefmen or men in authority scribes to require justice 13 Now the Assideans were the first among the children of Israel that sought peace of them 14 For said they One that is a priest of the seed of Aaron is come with this army and he will do us no wrong 15 So he spake unto them peaceably and sware unto them saying We will procure the harm neither of you nor your friends 16 Whereupon they beleeved him howbeit he took of them threescore men and slew them in one day according to the words which he wrote 17 * Ps 79.2 3. The flesh of thy saints have they cast out their bloud have they shed round about Jerusalem and there was none to bury them 18 Wherefore the fear and dread of them fell upon all the people who said There is neither truth nor †Gr. judgement righteousness in them for they have broken the covenant and oath that they made 19 After this removed Bacchides from Jerusalem and pitched his tents in Bezeth where he sent and took many of the men that had forsaken him and certain of the people also and when he had slain them he cast them into the great pit 20 Then committed he the countrey to Alcimus and left with him a power to aid him so Bacchides went to the king 21 But Alcimus ‖ Or laboured to defend his high priesthood contended for the high priesthood 22 And unto him resorted all such as troubled the people who after they had gotten the land of Juda into their power did much hurt in Israel 23 Now when Judas saw all the mischief that Alcimus and his company had done among the Israelites even above the heathen 24 He went out into all the coasts of Judea round about and took vengeance of them that had ‖ Or fled from him to the enemy revolted from him so that they durst no more ‖ Or invade the countrey go forth into the countrey 25 On the other side when Alcimus saw that Judas and his company ‖ Or was groan â—ny strong had gotten the upper hand and knew that he was not able †Gr. to abide them to abide their force he went again to the king and said all the worst of them that he could 26 Then the king sent Nicanor one of his honourable princes a man that bare deadly hate unto Israel with commandment to destroy the people 27 So Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a great force and sent unto Judas and his brethren deceitfully with †Gr. peaceable friendly words saying 28 Let there be no battel between me and you I will come with a few men that I may †Gr. see your faces see you in peace 29 He came therefore to Judas they saluted one another peaceably Howbeit the enemies were prepared to take away Judas by violence 30 Which thing after it was known to Judas to wit that he came unto him with deceit he was sore afraid of him would see his face no more 31 Nicanor also when he saw that his counsel was discovered went out to †Gr. meet Judas in battel fight against Judas besides ‖ Or Carphasalama Capharsalama 32 Where there were slain of Nicanors side about five thousand men and the rest fled into the city of David 33 After this went Nicanor up to mount Sion and there came out of the sanctuary certain of the priests and certain of the elders of the people to salute him peaceably and to shew him the burnt-sacrifice that was offered for the king 34 But he mocked them and laughed at them and †Gr. defiled them abused them shamefully and spake proudly 35 And swore in his wrath saying Unless Judas and his host be now delivered into my hands if ever I come again †Gr. in peace in safety I will burn up this house and with that he went out in a great rage 36 Then the priests entred in and stood before the altar and the temple weeping and saying 37 Thou O Lord didst choose this house to be called by thy name and to be a house of prayer and petition for thy people 38 Be avenged of this man his host and let them fall by the sword remember their blasphemies and suffer them not to continue any longer 39 So Nicanor went out of Jerusalem and pitched his tents in Bethoron where an host out of Syria met him 40 But Judas pitched in Adasa with three thousand men and there he prayed saying 41 * 2 Kin. 19.35 O Lord when they that were sent from the king of the Assyrians blasphemed thine angel went out and smote an hundred fourscore and five thousand of them 〈◊〉 37.26 Ecclus 4â— 21 2 Mac. 8.19 42 Even so destroy thou this host before us this day that the rest may know that he hath spoken blasphemously against thy sanctuary and judge thou him according to his wickedness 43 So the thirteenth day of the moneth Adar the hosts joyned battel but Nicanors host was discomfitted and he himself was first slain in the battel 44
would not be comforted because they are not 19 ¶ But when Herod was dead behold an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 Saying Arise and take the young childe and his mother and go into the land of Israel for they are dead which sought the young childes life 21 And he arose and took the young childe and his mother and came into the land of Israel 22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea in the room of his father Herod he was afraid to go thither notwithstanding being warned of God in a dream he turned aside into the parts of Galilee 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets He shall be called a Nazarene CHAP. III. 1 John preacheth his office life and baptism 7 Here reprebendeth the Pharisees 13 and baptizeth Christ in Jordan IN those days came * Mar. 1.4 Luk. 3.2 John the Baptists preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 And saying Repent ye for the kingdom of heaven is at hand 3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias saying * Isa 40. â— Mar. 1.3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness Prepare ye the way of the Lord make his paths strait 4 And the same John had his raiment of camels hair and a leathern girdle about his loyns and his meat was locusts and wilde honey 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region round about Jordan 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan confessing their sins 7 ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism he said unto them * Chap. 12.34 O generation of vipers who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come 8 Bring forth therefore fruits ‖ Or answerable to amendment of life meet for repentance 9 And think not to say within your selves * Joh. 8.39 We have Abraham to our father for I say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham 10 And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees * Chap. 7.19 therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire 11 * Mar. 1.8 Luke 3.16 John 1.26 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance but he that cometh after me is mightier then I whose shoes I am not worthy to bear he shall baptize you with the holy Ghost and with fire 12 Whose fan is in his hand and he will throughly purge his floor and gather his wheat into the garner but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire 13 ¶ * Mar. 1.9 Luk. 3.21 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him 14 But John forbad him saying I have need to be baptized of thee and comest thou to me 15 And Jesus answering said unto him Suffer it to be so now for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness Then he suffered him 16 And Jesus when he was baptized went up straightway out of the water and lo the heavens were opened unto him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him 17 And lo a voice from heaven saying This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased CHAP. IV. 1 Christ fasteth and is tempted 11 The angels minister unto him 13 He dwelleth in Capernaum 17 beginneth to preach 18 calleth Peter and Andrew 21 James and John 23 and healeth all the diseased THen was * Mar. 1 1â— Luk. 4.1 Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil 2 And when he had fasted fourty days and fourty nights he was afterward an hungred 3 And when the tempter came to him he said If thou be the Son of God command that these stones be made bread 4 But he answered and said It is written * Deut. 8.3 Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city and setteth him on a pinacle of the temple 6 And saith unto him If thou be the Son of God cast thy self down for it is written * Ps 91.11 He shall give his angels charge concerning thee and in their hands they shall bear thee up lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone 7 Jesus said unto him It is written again * Deut. 6.16 Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God 8 Again the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them 9 And saith unto him All these things will I give thee if thou wilt fall down and worship me 10 Then saith Jesus unto him Get thee hence Satan for it is written * Deut. 6.13 10.20 Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and him onely shalt thou serve 11 Then the devil leaveth him and behold angels came and ministred unto him 12 ¶ * Mar. 1.14 Luk. 4.14 Joh 4.43 Now when Jesus had heard that John was ‖ Or dâ—livered up cast into prison he departed into Galilee 13 And leaving Nazareth he came and dwelt in Capernaum which is upon the sea-coast in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim 14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet saying 15 * Isa 9.1 The land of Zabulon and the land of Nephthalim by the way of the sea beyond Jordan Galilee of the Gentiles 16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up 17 ¶ * Mar. 1.14 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand 18 ¶ * Mar. 1.16 And Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee saw two brethren Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea for they were fishers 19 And he saith unto them Follow me and I will make you fishers of men 20 And they straightway left their nets and followed him 21 And going on from thence he saw other two brethren James the son of Zebedee and John his brother in a ship with Zebedee their father mending their nets and he called them 22 And they immediatly left the ship their father followed him 23 ¶ And Jesus went about all Galilee teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people 24 And his fame went throughout all Syria and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments and those which were possessed with devils and those which were lunatick and those that had the palsie and he healed them 25 And there
named Joseph who also himself was Jesus disciple 58 He went to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered 59 And when Joseph had taken the body he wrapped it in a clean linen colth 60 And laid it in his own new tomb which he had hewn out in the rock he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre departed 61 And there was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sitting over against the sepulchre 62 ¶ Now the next day that followed the day of the preparation the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate 63 Saying Sir we remember that that deceiver said while he was yet alive After three days I will rise again 64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day lest his disciples come by night and steal him away and say unto the people He is risen from the dead so the last errour shall be worse then the first 65 Pilate said unto them Ye have a watch go your way make it as sure as you can 66 So they went and made the sepulchre sure sealing the stone and setting a watch CHAP. XXVIII 1 Christs resurrection is declared by an angel to the women 9 He himself appeareth unto them 11 The high priests give the souldiers money to say that he was stolen out of his sepulchre 16 Christ appeareth to his disciples 19 and sendeth them to baptize and teach all nations IN the * Mark 16.1 Joh. 20.1 end of the sabbath as it began to dawn towards the first day of the week came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre 2 And behold there ‖ Or had been was a great earthquake for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it 3 His countenance was like lightning his raiment white as snow 4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake became as dead men 5 And the angel answered and said unto the women Fear not ye for I know that ye seek Jesus which was crucified 6 He is not here for he is risen as he said come see the place where the Lord lay 7 And go quickly tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead and behold he goeth before you into Galilee there shall ye see him lo I have told you 8 And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy and did run to bring his disciples word 9 ¶ And as they went to tell his disciples behold Jesus met them saying All hail And they came and held him by the feet and worshipped him 10 Then said Jesus unto them Be not afraid go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee and there shall they see me 11 ¶ Now when they were going behold some of the watch came into the city and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done 12 And when they were assembled with the elders and had taken counsel they gave large money unto the souldiers 13 Saying Say ye His disciples came by night and stole him away while we slept 14 And if this come to the governours ears we will perswade him and secure you 15 So they took the money and did as they were taught and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day 16 ¶ Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them 17 And when they saw him they worshipped him but some doubted 18 And Jesus came and spake unto them saying All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth 19 ¶ * Mark 16.15 Go ye therefore and teach all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy Ghost 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you and lo I am with you alway even unto the end of the world Amen ¶ The Gospel according to S. immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea but Silas and Timotheus abode there still 15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed they departed 16 ¶ Now while Paul waited for them at Athens his spirit was stirred in him when he saw the city ‖ Or full of idols wholly given to idolatry 17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews and with the devout persons and in the market daily with them that met with him 18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans and of the Stoicks encountred him and some said What will this ‖ Or base fellow babler say other some He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods because he preached unto them Jesus and the resurrection 19 And they took him and brought him unto ‖ Or Mars-hill It was the highest court in Athens Areopagus saying May we know what this new doctrine whereof thou speakest is 20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears we would know therefore what these things mean 21 For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing 22 ¶ Then Paul stood in the midst of ‖ Or the court of the Areopagites Mars hill and said Ye men of Athens I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious 23 For as I passed by and beheld your ‖ Or gods that you worship 2 Thes 2.4 devotions I found an altar with this inscription TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship him declare I unto you 24 * Chap. 7.48 God that made the world and all things therein seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth dwelleth not in temples made with hands 25 Neither is worshipped with mens hands * Psal 50.8 as though he needed any thing seeing he giveth to all life and breath and all things 26 And hath made of one bloud all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth and hath determined the times before appointed and the bounds of their habitation 27 That they should seek the Lord if haply they might feel after him and finde him though he be not far from every one of us 28 For in him we live and move and have our being as certain also of your own poets have said For we are also his offspring 29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God * Isa 40.18 we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold or silver or stone graven by art and mans device 30 And the times of their ignorance God winked at but now commandeth all men every whereto repent 31 Because he hath appointed a day in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained whereof he hath ‖ Or offered faith given assurance unto all men in that he hath raised him from the dead 32 ¶ And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead some mocked and others said We will hear thee again of this matter 33 So Paul departed from among them 34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him and beleeved among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman named Damaris and others with them CHAP. XVIII 3 Paul laboureth with his hands and preacheth at Corinth to the Gentiles 9 The Lord encourageth him in a vision 12 He is accused before Gallio the deputy but is dismissed 18 Afterwards passing from city to city he strengthneth the disciples 24 Apollos being more perfectly instructed by Aquila and Priscilla 28 preacheth Christ with great efficacy AFter these things Paul departed from Athens and came to Corinth 2 And found a certain Jew named * Rom. 16.3 Aquila born in Pontus lately come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome and came unto them 3 And because he was of the same craft he abode with them and wrought for by their occupation they were tent-makers 4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath and perswaded the Jews and the Greeks 5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia Paul was pressed in spirit and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ 6 And when they opposed themselves and blasphemed * Matth. 10.14 he shook his raiment and said unto them Your bloud be upon your own heads I am clean from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles 7 ¶ And he departed thence and entred into a certain mans house named Justus one that worshipped God whose house joyned hard to the synagogue 8 * 1 Cor. 3 14. And Crispus the chief ruler of the synagogue beleeved on the Lord with all his house and many of the Corinthians hearing beleeved and were baptized 9 Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision Be not afraid but speak and hold not thy peace 10 For I am with thee and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee for I have much people in this city 11 And he †Gr. sat there continued there a year and six moneths teaching the word of God among them 12 ¶ And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia the Jews made insurrection with one accord against Paul and brought him to the judgement-seat 13 Saying This fellow perswadeth men to worship God contrary to the law 14 And when Paul was now about to open his mouth Gallio said unto the Jews If it were a matter of wrong or wicked lewdness O ye Jews reason would that I should bear with you 15 But if it be a question of words and names and of your law look ye to it for I will be no judge of such matters 16 And he drave them from the judgement-seat 17 Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes the chief ruler of the synagogue and beat him before the judgement-seat and Gallio cared for none of those things 18 ¶ And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while and then took his leave of the brethren and sailed thence into Syria and with him Priscilla and Aquila having shorn his head in Cenchrea for he had a vow 19 And he came to Ephesus and left them there but he himself entred into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews 20 When they deâ—â—red him to tarry longer time with them he consented not 21 But bade them farewel saying I must by all means keep this feast that cometh in Jerusalem but I will return again unto you * 1 Cor. 4.19 Jam. 4.15 if God will And he sailed from Ephesus 22 And when he had landed at Cesarea and gone up and saluted the church he went down to Antioch 23 And after he had spent some time there he departed and went over all the countrey of Galatia and Phrygia in order strengthning all the disciples 24
