severity_n which_o seem_v so_o great_a in_o their_o eye_n and_o to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v not_o think_v the_o lord_n be_v too_o rigorous_a towards_o this_o people_n let_v we_o consider_v the_o vice_n which_o he_o by_o and_o by_o reckon_v up_o but_o a_o question_n may_v here_o be_v demand_v to_o wit_n why_o the_o prophet_n shall_v say_v that_o the_o people_n be_v so_o many_o way_n afflict_v see_v he_o begin_v to_o prophesy_v as_o we_o say_v before_o under_o the_o reign_n of_o vzziah_n in_o who_o time_n the_o state_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o judah_n be_v very_o quiet_a so_o that_o howsoever_o the_o kingdom_n of_o israel_n sustain_v some_o loss_n towards_o the_o end_n of_o vzziah_n his_o day_n yet_o that_o notwithstanding_o appertain_v nothing_o at_o all_o to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o judah_n for_o which_o cause_n the_o jew_n indeed_o think_v this_o to_o appertain_v to_o the_o reign_n of_o jotham_n and_o not_o to_o the_o reign_n of_o uzziah_n now_o howsoever_o their_o opinion_n seem_v not_o to_o agree_v very_o well_o at_o the_o first_o blush_n yet_o be_v it_o not_o without_o some_o probability_n of_o reason_n if_o we_o shall_v examine_v the_o opinion_n of_o other_o for_o we_o know_v that_o they_o have_v not_o always_o keep_v the_o order_n of_o time_n in_o gather_v together_o of_o the_o prophecy_n and_o it_o may_v be_v that_o this_o sermon_n of_o isaiah_n have_v obtain_v first_o place_n here_o for_o no_o other_o cause_n but_o for_o that_o it_o contain_v a_o sum_n of_o that_o doctrine_n which_o shall_v be_v handle_v afterward_o other_o think_v they_o escape_v easy_o away_o when_o they_o expound_v all_o these_o thing_n of_o vice_n and_o not_o of_o punishment_n but_o they_o can_v so_o easy_o avoid_v that_o which_o be_v speak_v of_o the_o burn_a of_o city_n and_o waste_v of_o the_o land_n if_o any_o think_v the_o prophet_n speak_v not_o of_o the_o present_a estate_n of_o the_o kingdom_n but_o of_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v and_o that_o in_o the_o person_n of_o god_n he_o denounce_v the_o judgement_n which_o be_v at_o hand_n howsoever_o they_o then_o see_v they_o not_o before_o their_o eye_n i_o do_v not_o great_o gainsay_v it_o although_o it_o be_v very_o likely_a that_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o thing_n which_o be_v know_v unto_o he_o it_o be_v rather_o a_o certain_a narration_n then_o of_o a_o thing_n do_v than_o a_o pprophecy_n though_o in_o the_o verse_n follow_v i_o confess_v he_o show_v what_o the_o issue_n be_v which_o approach_v verse_n 8._o and_o the_o daughter_n of_o zion_n shall_v remain_v like_o a_o cottage_n in_o consume_v ruinate_a and_o bring_v to_o nothing_o and_o into_o derision_n shall_v become_v like_o a_o cottage_n now_o he_o call_v jerusalem_n the_o daughter_n of_o zion_n by_o a_o phrase_n of_o speech_n usual_a in_o the_o scripture_n which_o intitle_v some_o people_n by_o the_o name_n of_o daughter_n as_o the_o daughter_n of_o babylon_n and_o tyre_n for_o the_o babylonian_n and_o tyrian_n themselves_o also_o he_o rather_o mention_v zion_n than_o jerusalem_n because_o of_o the_o dignity_n of_o the_o temple_n and_o this_o manner_n of_o speech_n also_o be_v very_o frequent_a throughout_o the_o whole_a scripture_n verse_n 9_o except_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n have_v reserve_v unto_o we_o even_o a_o small_a remnant_n we_o shall_v have_v be_v as_o sodom_n and_o shall_v have_v be_v as_o gomorah_n here_o he_o conclude_v that_o which_o he_o have_v pronounce_v before_o touch_v the_o scourge_n of_o god_n to_o wit_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o a_o ruin_n or_o rather_o that_o it_o be_v already_o present_a so_o as_o by_o the_o behold_n of_o it_o it_o may_v be_v fit_o resemble_v to_o the_o destruction_n of_o sodom_n be_v it_o not_o that_o the_o lord_n shall_v pull_v out_o a_o few_o remainder_n as_o out_o of_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o fire_n this_o verse_n therefore_o confirm_v that_o which_o i_o say_v erewhile_o where_o the_o prophet_n have_v speak_v of_o the_o calamity_n which_o be_v already_o happen_v do_v in_o brief_a manner_n conjoin_v therewith_o the_o event_n which_o shall_v short_o ensue_v as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v suffer_v not_o yourselves_o to_o be_v chastisement_n do_v we_o think_v the_o like_a wâ—ll_n not_o befall_v unto_o we_o if_o we_o partake_v with_o they_o in_o their_o rebellion_n for_o the_o lord_n have_v consecrate_v this_o people_n to_o himself_o and_o have_v exempt_v they_o from_o the_o common_a condition_n of_o other_o and_o wherefore_o shall_v he_o rather_o spare_v we_o if_o we_o continue_v harden_v in_o our_o impiety_n and_o disloyalty_n but_o which_o more_o be_v what_o issue_n can_v we_o expect_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o such_o a_o heap_n and_o puddle_n of_o vice_n whereinto_o man_n plunge_v themselves_o every_o way_n god_n have_v to_o his_o free_a covenant_n wherein_o he_o have_v promise_v that_o his_o church_n shall_v never_o perish_v withhold_v his_o vengeance_n from_o us._n this_o threaten_n also_o which_o be_v very_o terrible_a and_o fearful_a appertain_v to_o all_o those_o that_o be_v obstinate_a and_o desperate_a who_o manner_n can_v be_v reform_v by_o any_o stroke_n of_o god_n his_o rod_n on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o be_v to_o note_v that_o which_o i_o have_v already_o touch_v out_o of_o jeremiah_n namely_o that_o we_o ought_v to_o attribute_v it_o to_o the_o only_a mercy_n of_o god_n that_o we_o be_v not_o all_o utter_o consume_v and_o bring_v to_o nothing_o for_o if_o we_o shall_v behold_v how_o great_a the_o iniquity_n be_v which_o do_v reign_v in_o every_o place_n and_o among_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n we_o ought_v to_o admire_v god_n mercy_n that_o we_o see_v so_o much_o as_o one_o man_n alive_a and_o that_o all_o have_v not_o be_v clean_o sweep_v away_o from_o off_o the_o earth_n thus_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o keep_v his_o hand_n
have_v a_o little_a breathe_n and_o respite_n give_v they_o for_o the_o wicked_a imagine_v that_o there_o be_v a_o truce_n between_o god_n and_o they_o when_o they_o see_v no_o sign_n of_o his_o wrath_n likely_a to_o seize_v upon_o they_o for_o this_o cause_n they_o promise_v to_o themselves_o nothing_o but_o peace_n peace_n while_o the_o lord_n suffer_v they_o to_o enjoy_v ease_n and_o prosperity_n against_o such_o security_n the_o prophet_n threaten_v that_o god_n be_v ready_a to_o execute_v his_o vengeance_n notwithstanding_o they_o offer_v their_o sacrifice_n ordinary_o and_o renew_v they_o year_n after_o year_n hence_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o albeit_o the_o lord_n defer_v his_o chastisement_n and_o the_o execution_n of_o his_o vengeance_n yet_o we_o ought_v not_o therefore_o to_o defer_v our_o repentance_n for_o what_o if_o he_o spare_v and_o bear_v with_o we_o for_o a_o time_n have_v he_o therefore_o forget_v our_o sin_n no_o such_o matter_n let_v we_o beware_v how_o we_o build_v our_o peace_n then_o upon_o so_o slippery_a a_o foundation_n let_v we_o at_o no_o hand_n abuse_v his_o patience_n and_o long_o suffer_v but_o let_v the_o same_o rather_o draw_v we_o to_o repentance_n and_o to_o the_o seek_v of_o free_a reconciliation_n with_o he_o verse_n 2._o but_o i_o will_v bring_v the_o altar_n into_o distress_n and_o there_o shall_v be_v heaviness_n and_o sorrow_n and_o it_o shall_v be_v unto_o i_o like_o a_o altar_n i_o think_v that_o the_o letter_n vau_fw-fr shall_v be_v take_v here_o for_o a_o particle_n adversative_a as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v yet_o will_v i_o execute_v my_o judgement_n upon_o you_o and_o will_v avenge_v my_o quarrel_n although_o it_o seem_v for_o a_o time_n that_o in_o thus_o spare_v of_o you_o i_o be_o at_o one_o with_o you_o in_o the_o next_o place_n he_o threaten_v they_o with_o sorrow_n and_o lamentation_n in_o stead_n of_o their_o festival_n day_n some_o think_v the_o word_n sorrow_n to_o be_v a_o adiective_n but_o i_o be_o not_o of_o their_o mind_n for_o it_o be_v take_v in_o the_o same_o sense_n in_o the_o lamentation_n of_o jeremiah_n chap._n 2.5_o the_o prophet_n show_v then_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v bring_v this_o city_n into_o such_o distress_n that_o the_o jew_n shall_v well_o perceive_v they_o have_v not_o to_o do_v with_o man_n but_o with_o god_n so_o that_o howsoever_o the_o assyrian_n make_v war_n upon_o they_o yet_o they_o shall_v know_v to_o their_o cost_n that_o god_n be_v their_o chief_a commander_n and_o captain_n where_o he_o add_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v to_o he_o like_o ariel_n it_o can_v agree_v to_o the_o temple_n only_o for_o his_o meaning_n be_v that_o the_o city_n and_o all_o shall_v be_v sprinkle_v with_o the_o slaughter_n which_o the_o enemy_n shall_v make_v in_o jerusalem_n which_o he_o compare_v to_o a_o altar_n whereupon_o beast_n be_v slay_v to_o be_v sacrifice_v for_o as_o oft_o as_o the_o wicked_a be_v destinate_a to_o destruction_n the_o prophet_n compare_v the_o same_o to_o a_o sacrifice_n in_o a_o word_n in_o that_o he_o allude_v thus_o to_o the_o altar_n he_o affirm_v that_o the_o whole_a city_n shall_v be_v like_o ariel_n because_o it_o shall_v overflow_v with_o the_o blood_n of_o the_o slay_v whence_o it_o be_v manifest_a enough_o that_o a_o outward_a profession_n of_o god_n worship_n together_o with_o the_o external_a ceremony_n and_o token_n of_o his_o favourable_a presence_n be_v to_o little_a purpose_n unless_o a_o frank_a and_o cheerful_a obedience_n be_v join_v therewith_o and_o thus_o in_o taunt_a the_o hypocrite_n who_o profane_o present_v their_o beast_n in_o sacrifice_n to_o god_n as_o if_o by_o such_o mean_v they_o think_v to_o appease_v his_o anger_n he_o say_v that_o all_o their_o labour_n be_v lose_v for_o have_v pollute_v the_o temple_n &_o the_o altar_n he_o tell_v they_o that_o none_o can_v sacrifice_v right_o unto_o god_n but_o in_o kill_v and_o sacrifice_v those_o that_o be_v appoint_v to_o the_o slaughter_n throughout_o the_o city_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v you_o shall_v be_v murder_v and_o kill_v in_o every_o place_n he_o call_v this_o sacrifice_n a_o violent_a slaughter_n by_o a_o improper_a phrase_n of_o speech_n because_o they_o refuse_v to_o offer_v themselves_o willing_o unto_o god_n verse_n 3._o and_o i_o will_v besiege_v thou_o as_o a_o circle_n and_o fight_v against_o thou_o on_o a_o mount_n and_o will_v cast_v up_o rampart_n against_o thou_o by_o the_o verb_n chaddur_n he_o allude_v to_o the_o roundness_n of_o a_o ball_n and_o signify_v as_o much_o as_o if_o in_o our_o usual_a speech_n we_o shall_v say_v i_o will_v compass_v he_o about_o and_o thus_o show_v that_o they_o can_v no_o way_n escape_v where_o it_o be_v add_v i_o will_v fight_v against_o thou_o on_o a_o mount_n it_o concern_v the_o second_o mean_n by_o which_o a_o city_n be_v to_o be_v take_v for_o they_o use_v to_o make_v incursion_n here_o and_o there_o or_o to_o lay_v a_o stand_a siege_n now_o he_o confirm_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o former_a verse_n &_o show_v that_o god_n shall_v be_v the_o chief_a leader_n in_o this_o war_n and_o that_o the_o assyrian_n shall_v undertake_v nothing_o but_o by_o his_o commandment_n notwithstanding_o themselves_o be_v thrust_v forward_o with_o a_o inordinate_a lust_n and_o desire_n of_o reign_v over_o the_o poor_a jew_n for_o it_o be_v very_o requisite_a that_o this_o people_n shall_v be_v full_o persuade_v that_o god_n be_v the_o author_n of_o all_o the_o calamity_n wherewith_o they_o be_v oppress_v to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v thereby_o come_v to_o a_o narrow_a examination_n of_o their_o impiety_n now_o the_o often_o we_o meet_v with_o this_o doctrine_n in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n so_o much_o the_o more_o careful_a aught_o we_o to_o be_v in_o imprint_v the_o same_o well_o in_o our_o heart_n for_o the_o bless_a spirit_n of_o god_n be_v not_o wont_a to_o repeat_v one_o thing_n again_o and_o again_o without_o just_a cause_n verse_n 4._o so_o shall_v thou_o be_v humble_v and_o shall_v speak_v out_o of_o the_o ground_n and_o thy_o speech_n shll_v be_v as_o out_o of_o the_o dust_n thy_o voice_n also_o shall_v be_v out_o of_o the_o ground_n like_v he_o that_o have_v a_o spirit_n of_o divination_n and_o thy_o talk_n shall_v whisper_v out_o of_o the_o dust_n he_o deride_v the_o pride_n of_o blasphemy_n and_o injury_n and_o contemn_v his_o holy_a word_n this_o pride_n say_v isaiah_n shall_v be_v bring_v down_o well_o enough_o and_o this_o intolerable_a arrogancy_n shall_v cease_v in_o the_o next_o word_n he_o express_v this_o further_a by_o a_o similitude_n say_v that_o they_o shall_v whisper_v and_o speak_v as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o the_o hole_n of_o the_o earth_n for_o he_o compare_v the_o voice_n of_o those_o which_o in_o time_n past_a be_v so_o loud_a and_o high_a to_o the_o speech_n of_o conjurer_n who_o give_v their_o answer_n out_o of_o some_o hollow_a cave_n dig_v be_v like_a unto_o they_o some_o expound_v this_o as_o if_o the_o prophet_n mean_v to_o say_v that_o their_o chastisement_n shall_v nothing_o profit_v they_o but_o the_o text_n cross_v that_o sense_n and_o beside_o he_o will_v by_o and_o by_o show_n that_o the_o jew_n shall_v be_v bring_v to_o repentance_n but_o first_o of_o all_o he_o terrify_v they_o to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v beat_v down_o their_o pride_n because_o they_o do_v stout_o &_o rebelliouslie_o despise_v all_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o prophet_n the_o humble_v therefore_o whereof_o he_o speak_v signify_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v cover_v with_o shame_n in_o such_o wise_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o dare_v to_o advance_v themselves_o nor_o to_o utter_v forth_o their_o swell_a word_n of_o vanity_n verse_n 5._o moreover_o the_o multitude_n of_o thy_o stranger_n shall_v be_v like_o small_a
that_o so_o they_o may_v cease_v to_o accuse_v god_n of_o cruelty_n in_o bring_v destruction_n upon_o they_o see_v the_o whole_a cause_n thereof_o be_v in_o themselves_o they_o make_v many_o turn_n to_o escape_n god_n judgement_n but_o the_o prophet_n affirm_v that_o he_o be_v always_o good_a to_o those_o which_o honour_v he_o and_o albeit_o moses_n in_o this_o sense_n call_v he_o a_o consume_a fire_n deut._n 9.3_o lest_o his_o majesty_n and_o power_n shall_v be_v contemn_v yet_o whosoever_o he_o be_v that_o shall_v draw_v near_o unto_o he_o with_o a_o true_a desire_n to_o please_v he_o he_o shall_v feel_v by_o the_o effect_n that_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o sweet_a and_o amiable_a than_o his_o presence_n presence_n though_o god_n title_n himself_o a_o consume_a fire_n lest_o his_o majesty_n shall_v be_v contemn_v yet_o whosoever_o draw_v near_o he_o with_o a_o desire_n to_o please_v he_o shall_v feel_v nothing_o so_o sweet_a as_o his_o presence_n at_o such_o time_n then_o as_o god_n cause_v the_o light_n of_o his_o countenance_n to_o shine_v upon_o the_o faithful_a they_o have_v peace_n with_o he_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n whence_o it_o follow_v that_o he_o be_v not_o conversation_n of_o man_n whereby_o we_o may_v easy_o take_v trial_n of_o our_o godliness_n for_o he_o set_v before_o we_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o second_o table_n as_o he_o have_v do_v often_o already_o which_o be_v the_o best_a way_n to_o discover_v who_o indeed_o be_v a_o religious_a man_n for_o as_o gold_n be_v try_v by_o the_o fire_n so_o by_o a_o man_n ordinary_a carriage_n of_o those_o tyrant_n which_o hold_v they_o tributary_n and_o besiege_v they_o the_o estate_n which_o the_o prophet_n here_o describe_v be_v very_o miserable_a for_o be_v it_o not_o a_o pitiful_a thing_n to_o see_v a_o people_n of_o a_o free_a condition_n so_o press_v under_o such_o a_o barbarous_a tyranny_n that_o all_o their_o good_n must_v come_v to_o be_v praise_v their_o house_n possession_n family_n &_o servant_n register_v many_o of_o our_o time_n which_o have_v not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o these_o thing_n have_v yet_o some_o little_a taste_n how_o irksome_a this_o servitude_n be_v make_v themselves_o great_a let_v they_o have_v the_o strong_a side_n and_o then_o it_o be_v no_o matter_n by_o what_o mean_v they_o come_v by_o it_o just_o or_o unjust_o all_o be_v one_o so_o they_o have_v it_o all_o be_v fish_n that_o come_v to_o net_n as_o they_o think_v poet._n the_o say_n of_o a_o poet._n they_o put_v in_o practice_v the_o say_n of_o a_o certain_a poet_n if_o a_o man_n will_v when_o we_o read_v this_o history_n let_v we_o learn_v not_o to_o be_v proud_a if_o we_o have_v be_v strong_a at_o some_o time_n or_o if_o all_o thing_n have_v fall_v out_o according_a to_o our_o wish_n us._n for_o he_o that_o have_v exâ—lted_v we_o can_v soon_o deject_v us._n for_o he_o who_o have_v exalt_v we_o can_v quick_o also_o abase_v and_o cast_v we_o down_o and_o if_o he_o reproach_v the_o assyrian_a for_o his_o over_o ween_v how_o much_o more_o ought_v they_o to_o be_v reprove_v who_o attribute_v the_o praise_n of_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n unto_o themselves_o as_o if_o such_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o impiety_n now_o there_o be_v here_o a_o double_a blasphemy_n first_o in_o that_o he_o advance_v himself_o above_o god_n think_v himself_o strong_a than_o he_o beside_o in_o that_o he_o match_v the_o true_a god_n with_o the_o false_a he_o show_v his_o impiety_n more_o then_o enough_o when_o he_o exalt_v himself_o above_o idol_n for_o although_o idol_n be_v nothing_o forge_v idolater_n show_v themselves_o contemner_n of_o all_o divine_a power_n in_o contemn_v the_o god_n which_o themselves_o have_v forge_v yet_o in_o regard_n that_o the_o worshipper_n of_o they_o attribute_v a_o certain_a virtue_n and_o divinity_n unto_o they_o if_o they_o lift_v up_o themselves_o against_o such_o forge_a god_n they_o show_v themselves_o contemner_n of_o all_o divine_a power_n their_o own_o conscience_n than_o witness_v against_o they_o that_o they_o bid_v open_a defiance_n to_o god_n neither_o be_v there_o any_o ignorance_n which_o can_v excuse_v they_o because_o they_o
