what is in his mouth what he saith 6 And when Hushai was come to Absalom Absalom spake unto him saying Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner shall we do after his † Heb. word saying If not speak thou 7 And Hushai said unto Absalom The counsel that Ahithophel hath † Heb. counselled given is not good at this time 8 For said Hushai thou knowest thy father and his men that they be mighty men and they be † Heb. bitter of s●ul chafed in their minds as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field and thy father is a man of war and will not lodge with the people 9 Behold he is hid now in some pit or in some other place and it will come to pass when some of them be † Heb. faln overthrown at the first that whosoever heareth it will say There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom 10 And he also that is valiant whose heart is as the heart of a lion shall utterly melt for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man and they which be with him are valiant men 11 Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee from Dan even to Beer-sheba as the sand that is by the sea for multitude and † Heb. that thy face or presence go c. that thou go to battel in thine own person 12 So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one 13 Moreover if he be gotten into a city then shall all Israel bring rope to that city and we will draw it into the river until there be not one small stone found there 14 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better then the counsel of Ahithophel for the LORD had † Heb. commanded appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom 15 ¶ Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar the priests Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders of Israel and thus and thus have I counselled 16 Now therefore send quickly and tell David saying Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness but speedily pass over lest the king be swallowed up and all the people that are with him 17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel for they might not be seen to come into the city and a wench went and told them and they went and told king David 18 Nevertheless a lad saw them and told Absalom but they went both of them away quickly and came to a mans house in Bahurim which had a well in his court whither they went down 19 And the woman took and spread a covering over the wells mouth and spread ground corn thereon and the thing was not known 20 And when Absaloms servants came to the woman to the house they said Where is Ahimaaz and Jonathan And the woman said unto them They be gone over the brook of water And when they had sought and could not finde them they returned to Jerusalem 21 And it came to pass after they were departed that they came up out of the well and went and told king David and said unto David Arise and pass quickly over the water for thus hath Ahithophel counselled against you 22 Then David arose and all the people that were with him and they passed over Jordan by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was not gone over Jordan 23 ¶ And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not † Heb. done followed he saddled his ass and arose and gat him home to his house to his city and † Heb. gave charge concerning his house put his houshold in order and hanged himself and died and was buried in the sepulchre of his father 24 Then David came to Mahanaim and Absalom passed over Jordan he and all the men of Israel with him 25 ¶ And Absalom made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab which Amasa was a mans son whose name was Ithra an Israelite that went in to Abigail the daughter of Nahash sister to Zeruiah Joabs mother 26 So Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of Gilead 27 ¶ And it came to pass when David was come to Mahanaim that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lo-debar and Barzillai the Gileadite of Rogelim 28 Brought beds and ‖ Or cups basons and earthen vessels and wheat and barley and flour and parched corn and beans and lentiles and parched pulse 29 And honey and butter and sheep and cheese of kine for David and for the people that were with him to eat for they said The people is hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness CHAP. XVIII 1 David viewing the armies in their march giveth them charge of Absalom 6 The Israelites are sore smitten in the wood of Ephaim 9 Absalom hanging in an oak is slain by Joab and cast into a pit 18 Absaloms place 19 Ahimaaz and Cushi bring ti●ings to David 33 David mourneth for Absalom ANd David numbred the people that were with him and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them 2 And David sent forth a third part of the people under the hand of Joab and a third part under the hand of A●●shai the son of Zeruiah Joabs brother and a third part under the hand of Ittai the G●ttite and the king said unto the people I will surely go forth with you my self also 3 But the people answered Thou shalt not go forth for if we flee away they will not † Heb. set their heart on us care for us neither if half of us die will they care for us but now thou art † Heb. as ten thousand of us worth ten thousand of us therefore now it is better that thou † Heb. be to succour succour us out of the city 4 And the king said unto them What seemeth you best I will do And the king stood by the gate-side and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands 5 And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai saying Deal gently for my sake with the young man even with Absalom And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom 6 ¶ So the people went out into the field against Israel and the battel was in the wood of Ephraim 7 Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men 8 For the battel was there scattered over the face of all the countrey and the wood † Heb. multiplied to devour devoured more people that day
then the sword devoured 9 ¶ And Absalom met the servants of David and Absalom rode upon a mule and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak and his head caught hold of the oak and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth and the mule that was under him went away 10 And a certain man saw it and told Joab and said Behold I saw Absalom hanged in an oak 11 And Joab said unto the man that told him And behold thou sawest him and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground and I would have given thee ten shekels of silver and a girdle 12 And the man said unto Joab Though I should † Heb. weigh upon mine hand receive a thousand shekels of silver in mine hand yet would I not put forth mine hand against the kings son for in our hearing the king charged thee Abishai and Ittai saying † Heb. Beware whosoever ye be of c. Beware that none touch the young man Absalom 13 Otherwise I should have wrought falshood against mine own life for there is no matter hid from the king and thou thy self wouldest have set thy self against me 14 Then said Joab I may not tarry thus † Heb. before thee with thee And he took three darts in his hand and thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was yet alive in the † Heb. hurt midst of the oak 15 And ten young men that bare Joabs armour compassed about and smote Absalom and slew him 16 And Joab blew the trumpet and the people returned from pursuing after Israel for Joab held back the people 17 And they took Absalom and cast him into a great pit in the wood and laid a very great heap of stones upon him and all Israel fled every one to his tent 18 ¶ Now Absalom in his life-time had taken and reared up for himself a pillar which is in * Gen. 14.17 the kings dale for he said I have no son to keep my name in remembrance and he called the pillar after his own name and it is called unto this day Absaloms place 19 ¶ Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok Let me now run and bear the king tidings how that the LORD hath † Heb. judged him from the hand c. avenged him of his enemies 20 And Joab said unto him Thou shalt not † Heb. be a man of tidings bear tidings this day but thou shalt bear tidings another day but this day thou shalt bear no tidings because the kings son is dead 21 Then said Joab to Cushi Go tell the king what thou hast seen And Cushi bowed himself unto Joab and ran 22 Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab But † Heb. be what may howsoever let me I pray thee also run after Cushi And Joab said Wherefore wilt thou run my son seeing that thou hast no tidings ‖ Or convenient ready 23 But howsoever said he let me run And he said unto him Run Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain and overran Cushi 24 And David sat between the two gates and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate unto the wall and lift up his eyes and looked and behold a man running alone 25 And the watchman cried and told the king And the king said If he be alone there is tidings in his mouth And he came apace and drew near 26 And the watchman saw another man running and the watchman called unto the porter and said Behold another man running alone And the king said He also bringeth tidings 27 And the watchman said † Heb. I see the running Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok And the king said He is a good man and cometh with good tidings 28 And Ahimaaz called and said unto the king ‖ Or Peace be to thee All is well And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king and said Blessed be the LORD thy God which hath † Heb. Peace delivered up the men that lift up their hand against my hand the king 29 And the king said † Heb. shut up I● the young man Absalom safe And Ahimaaz answered When Joab sent the king servant me thy servant I saw a great tumult but I knew not wha● it was 30 And the king said unto him Turn aside and stand here And he turned aside and stood still 31 And behold Cushi came and Cushi said † Heb. Is there peace Tidings my lord the king for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee 32 And the king said unto Cushi Is the young man Absalom safe And Cushi answered The enemies of my lord the king and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt be as that young man is 33 ¶ And the king was much moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and went and as he went th●● he said O my son Absalom my son my son Absalom would God I had died for thee O A●salom my son my son CHAP. XIX 1 Joab causeth the king to cease his mourning 9 The Israelites are earnest to bring the king back 11 David sendeth to the priests incite them of Judah 18 Shimei is pardoned 24 Mephib●sheth excused 32 Barzillai dismissed Chimham his son is taken into the kings family 41 The Israelites expostulate with Judah f●r bringing h●me the king without them ANd it was told Joab Behold the king weepeth and mourneth for Absalom 2 And the † Heb. salvation ●r d●liverance victory that day was turned into mourning unto all the people for the people hear● say that day how the king was grieved for his son 3 And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city as people being ashamed steal away when they thee in battel 4 But the king covered his face and the king cried with a loud voice O my son Absalom O Absalom my son my son 5 And Joab came into the house to the king and said Thou hast shamed this day the faces of all thy servants which this day have saved thy life and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters and the lives of thy wives and the lives of thy concubines 6 † Heb. b● loving c. In that thou lovest thine enemies and hatest thy friends for thou hast declared this day † Heb. that princes or servants are not to thee that thou regardest neither princes nor servants for this day I perceive that if Absalom had lived and all we had died this day then it had pleased thee well 7 Now therefore arise go forth and speak † Heb. to the heart of thy servants confortably unto thy servants for I swear by the LORD if thou go not forth there will not tarry one with thee this night and that will be worse unto thee then

XI 1 David by a general consent is made king at Hebron 4 He winneth the castle of Zion from the Jebusites by Joabs valour 10 A catalogue of Davids mighty men THen * 2 Sam. 5.1 all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron saying Behold we are thy bone and thy flesh 2 And moreover † Heb both yesterday and the third day in time past even when Saul was king thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel and the LORD thy God said unto thee Thou shalt ‖ Or rule feed my people Israel and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel 3 Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD and they anointed David king over Israel according to the word of the LORD † Heb. by the hand of by * 1 Sam. 16.13 Samuel 4 ¶ And David and all Israel * 2 Sam. 5.6 went to Jerusalem which is Jebus where the Jebusites were the inhabitants of the land 5 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David Thou shalt not come hither Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion which is the city of David 6 And David said Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be † Heb. head chief and captain So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up and was chief 7 And David dwelt in the castle therefore they called ‖ That is Zion 2 Sam. 5.7 i● The city of David 8 And he built the city round about even from Millo round about and loab † Heb. revived repaired the rest of the city 9 So David † Heb. went in going and increasing waxed greater and greater for the LORD of hosts was with him 10 ¶ * ● Sam. 23.8 These also are the chief of the mighty men whom David had who ‖ Or ●●ld strongly with him strengthned themselves with him in his kingdom and with all Israel to make him king according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel 11 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had Jashobeam ‖ Or son of Hachmoni an Hachmonite the chief of the captains he lift up his spear against three hundred slain by him at one time 12 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite who was one of the three mighties 13 He was with David at ‖ Or Ephisdamrim 1 Sam. 17.1 Pas-dammim and there the Philistines were gathered together to battel where was a parcel of ground full of barley and the people fled from before the Philistines 14 And they ‖ Or stood set themselves in the midst of that parcel and delivered it and slew the Philistines and the LORD saved them by a great ‖ Or salvation deliverance 15 ¶ Now ‖ Or three captains over the thirty three of the thirty captains * 2 Sam. 13.12 went down to the rock to David into the cave of Adullam and the host of the Philistines encamped in the valley of Rephaim 16 And David was then in the hold and the Philistines garison was then at Beth-lehem 17 And David longed and said Oh that one would give me drink of the water of the well of Beth-lehem that is at the gate 18 And the three brake through the host of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Beth-lehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David but David would not drink of it but poured it out to the LORD 19 And said My God forbid it me that I should do this thing shall I drink the bloud of these men † Heb. with their lives that have put their lives in jeopardy for with the jeopardy of their lives they brought it therefore he would not drink it These things did these three mightiest 20 ¶ And Abishai the brother of Joab he was chief of the three for lifting up his spear against three hundred he slew them and had a name among the three 21 * 1 Sam. 23.19 c. after this * 2 Sam. 8.1 c. it came to pass that David smote the Philistines and subdued them and took Gath and her towns out of the hand of the Philistines 2 And he smote Moab and the Moabites became Davids servants and brought gifts 3 ¶ And David smote ‖ Or Hadarezer in Sam. Hadarezer king of Zobah unto Hamath as he went to stablish his dominion by the river Euphrates 4 And David took from him a thousand chariots and seven thousand hors-men and twenty thousand footmen David also houghed all the chariot horses but reserved of them an hundred chariots 5 And when the Syrians of † Heb. XIX 1 Davids messengers sent to comfort Hanun the son of Nahash are villainously entreated 6 The Ammonites strengthned by the Syriam are overcome by Joab and Abishai 16 Shopback making a new supply of the Syrians is slain by David NOw * 2 Sam. 10. 1 c. it came to pass after this that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died and his son reigned in his stead 2 And David said I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash because his father shewed kindness to me And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father so the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun to comfort him 3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun † Heb In thine eyes doth David c. Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father that he hath sent comforters unto thee are not his servants come unto thee for to search and to overthrow and to spie out the land 4 Wherefore Hanun took Davids servants and shaved them and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks and sent them away 5 Then there went certain and told David how the men were served and he sent to meet them for the men were greatly ashamed and the king said Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown and then return 6 ¶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves † Heb. to stink odious to David Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and hors-men out of Mesopotamia and out of Syria-maachah and out of Zobah 7 So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots and the king of Maachah and his people who came and pitched before Medeba And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities and came to battel 8 And when David heard of it he sent Joab and all the host of the mighty men 9 And the children of Ammon came out and put the battel in aray before the gate of the city and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field 10 Now when Joab saw that † Heb. the face of the battel was the battel was set against him before and behinde he chose out of all the ‖ Or young men choise of Israel and put them in aray against the Syrians 11 And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of † Heb. Abshai Abishai his brother and they set themselves in aray against the children of Ammon 12 And he said If the Syrians be too strong for me then thou shalt help me but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee then I will help thee 13 Be of good courage and let us he have our selves valiantly for our people and for the cities of our God and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight 14 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battel and they fled before him 15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled they likewise fled before Abishai his brother and entred into the city Then Joab came to Jerusalem 16 ¶ And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel they sent messengers and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the ‖ That is Euphrates river and ‖ Or Shobach 2 Sam. 10.16 Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them 17 And it was told David and he gathered all Israel and passed over Jordan and came upon them and set the battel in aray against them so when David had put the battel in aray against the Syrians they sought with him 18 But the Syrians fled before Israel and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots and fourty thousand footmen and killed Shophach the captain of the host 19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel they
