the camp in a clean place and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of separation it is a purification for sin 10 And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the even and it shall be unto the children of Israel and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them for a statute for ever 11 ¶ He that toucheth the dead body of any † Heb. soul of man man shall be unclean seven days 12 He shall purifie himself with it on the third day and on the seventh day he shall be clean but if he purifie not himself the third day then the seventh day he shall not be clean 13 Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead and purifieth not himself defileth the tabernacle of the LORD and that soul shall be cut off from Israel because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him he shall be unclean his uncleanness is yet upon him 14 This is the law when a man dieth in a tent all that come into the tent and all that is in the tent shall be unclean seven days 15 And every open vessel which hath no covering bound upon it is unclean 16 And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields or a dead body or a bone of a man or a grave shall be unclean seven days 17 And for an unclean person they shall take of the † Heb. dust ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin and † Heb. living waters shall be given running water shall be put thereto in a vessel 18 And a clean person shall take hyssop and dip it in the water and sprinkle it upon the tent and upon all the vessels and upon the persons that were there and upon him that touched a bone or one slain or one dead or a grave 19 And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day and on the seventh day and on the seventh day he shall purifie himself and wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and shall be clean at even 20 But the man that shall be unclean and shall not purifie himself that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the LORD the water of separation hath not been sprinkled upon him he is unclean 21 And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them that he that sprinkleth the water of separation shall wash his clothes and he that toucheth the water of separation shall be unclean until even 22 And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even CHAP. XX. 1 The children of Israel come to Zin where Miriam dieth 2 They murmure for want of water 7 Moses smiting the rock bringeth forth water at Meribah 14 Moses at Kadesh desireth passage through Edom which is denied him 22 At mount Hor Aaron resigneth his place to Eleazar and dieth THen came the children of Israel even the whole congregation into the desert of Zin in the first moneth and the people abode in Kadesh and Miriam died there and was buried there 2 And there was no water for the congregation and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron 3 And the people * Ex. 17.2 chode with Moses and spake saying Would God that we had died * Ch. 11.33 when our brethren died before the LORD 4 And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness that we and our cattel should die there 5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt to bring us in unto this evil place it is no place of seed or of figs or vines or of pomegranates neither is there any water to drink 6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and they fell upon their faces and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them 7 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 8 Take the rod and gather thou the assembly together thou and Aaron thy brother and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes and it shall give forth his water and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink 9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD as he commmanded him 10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock and he said unto them Hear now ye rebels must we fetch you water out of this rock 11 And Moses lift up his hand and with his rod he smote the rock twice and the water came out abundantly and the congregation drank and their beasts also 12 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron Because ye beleeved me not to sanctifie me in the eyes of the children of Israel therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them 13 * P● 1●6 32 c. This is the water of ‖ That is strite Meribah because the children of Israel strove with the LORD and he was sanctified in them 14 ¶ And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king or Edom Thus saith thy brother Israel thou knowest all the travel that hath † Heb. found us befallen us 15 How our fathers went down into Egypt and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time and the Egyptians vexed us and our fathers 16 And when we cried unto the LORD he heard our voice and sent an Angel and hath brought us forth out of Egypt and behold we are in kadesh a city in the uttermost of thy border 17 Let us pass I pray thee through thy countrey we will not pass through the fields or through the vineyards neither will we drink of the water of the wells we will go by the kings high-way we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left until we have passed thy borders 18 And Edom said unto him Thou shalt not pass by me lest I come out against thee with the sword 19 And the children of Israel said unto him We will go by the high-way and if I and my cattel drink of thy water then I will pay for it I will onely without doing any thing else go through on my feet 20 And he said Thou shalt not go through And Edom came out against him with much people and with a strong hand 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border wherefore Israel turned away from him 22 ¶ And the children of Israel even the whole congregation journeyed from * Chap. 33.37 kadesh and came unto mount Hor. 23 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor by the coast of the land of Edom saying 24 Aaron shall be gathered unto his people for he shall not enter into the

IX 1 A solemn fast and repentance of the people 4 The Levites make a religious confession of Gods goodness and their wickedness NOw in the twenty and fourth day of * Chap. 8.2 this moneth the children of Israel were assembled with fasling and with sackclothes and earth upon them 2 And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all † Heb. strange children strangers and stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their fathers 3 And they stood up in their place and read in the book of the law of the LORD their God one fourth part of the day and another fourth part they confessed and worshipped the LORD their God 4 ¶ Then stood up upon the ‖ Or seaffold stairs of the Levites Jeshua and Bani Kadmiel Shebaniah Bunni Sherebiah Bani and Chenani and cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God 5 Then the Levites Jeshua and Kadmiel Bani Hashabniah Sherebiah Hodijah Shebaniah and Pethabiah said Stand up and bless the LORD your God for ever and ever and blessed be thy glorious name which is exalted above all blessing and praise 6 Thou even thou art LORD alone * Gen. 1.1 thou hast made heaven the heaven of neavens with all their host the earth and all things that are therein the seas and all that is therein and thou preservest them all and the host of heaven worshippeth thee 7 Thou art the LORD the God who didst choose * Gen. 11.31 12.1 Abram and broughtest him forth out of Ur of the Caldees and gavest him the name of * Gen. 17.5 Abraham 8 And foundest his heart * Gen. 15 6. faithful before thee and madest a * Gen. 12.7 and 15.18 and 17.7 ● covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites the Hittites the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Jebusites and the Girgashites to give it I say to his seed and hast performed thy words for thou art righteous 9 * Ex. 3.7 14.10 And didst see the affliction of our fathers in Egypt and heardest their cry by the Red sea 10 And * Ex. 7.8 9 10 12 and 14 chap. shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh and on all his servants and on all the people of his land for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them so didst thou get thee a name as it is this day 11 * Ex. 14.21 22. 〈◊〉 from the south 4 They wandred in the wilderness in a solitary way they found no city to dwell in 5 Hungry and thirsty their soul sainted in them 6 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble and he delivered them out of their distresses 7 And he led them forth by the right way that they might go to a city of habitation 8 Oh that me● would praise the LORD for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men 9 For he satisfieth the longing soul and filleth the hungry soul with goodness 10 Such as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death being bound in affliction and iron 11 Because they rebelled against the words of God and contemned the counsel of the most High 12 Therefore he brought down their heart with labour they fell down and there was none to help 13 Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble and he saved them out of their distresses 14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and brake their bands in sunder 15 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men 16 For he hath broken the gates of brass and cut the bars of iron in sunder 17 Fools because of their transgression and because of their iniquities are afflicted 18 * Job ●3 20. Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat and they draw near unto the gates of death 19 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble he saveth them out of their distresses 20 He sent his word and healed them and delivered them from their destructions 21 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men 22 And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving and declare his works with † Heb. singing rejoycing 23 They that go down to the sea in ships that do business in great waters 24 These see the works of the LORD and his wonders in the deep 25 For he commandeth and † Heb. maketh to stand raiseth the stormy wind which sitteth up the waves thereof 26 They mount up to the heaven they do down again to the depths their soul is melted because of trouble 27 They reel to and fro and stagger like a drunken man and † Heb. act their wisdom is swallowed up are at their wits end 28 Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble and he bringeth them out of their distresses 29 He maketh the storm a calm so that the waves thereof are still 30 Then are they glad because they be quiet so he bringeth them unto their desired haven 31 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness and for his wonderful works to the children of men 32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people and praise him in the assembly of the elders 33 He turneth rivers into a wilderness and the water-springs into dry ground 34 A fruitful land into † Heb. saltness barrenness for the wickedness of them that dwell therein 35 * Isa 41.18 He turneth the wilderness into a standing water and dry ground into water-springs 36 And there he maketh the hungry to dwell that they may prepare a city for habitation 37 And sowe the fields and plant vineyards which may yeeld fruits of increase 38 He blesseth them also so that they are multiplied greatly and suffereth not their cattel to decrease 39 Again they are minished and brought low through oppression affliction and sorrow 40 * Job 12.21 He poureth contempt upon princes and causeth them to wander in the ‖ Or void place wilderness where there is no way 41 * 1 Sam. 2.8 Psal 113.7 8. CVIII 1 David encourageth himself to praise God 5 He prayeth for Gods assistance according to his promise 11 His confidence in Gods help ¶ A song or psalm of David O God my heart is fixed I will sing and give praise even with my glory 2 Awake psaltery and harp I my self will awake early 3 I will praise thee O LORD among the people and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations 4 For thy mercy is great above the heavens and thy truth reacheth unto the ‖ Or ski●s clouds 5 Be thou exalted O God above the heavens and thy glory above all the earth 6 * Psal 60 5. XXXIX 1 Jerusalem is taken 4 Zedekiah is made blinde and sent to Babylon 8 The city ruinated 9 The people captivated 11 Nebuchadrezzars charge for the good usage of Jeremiah 15 Gods promise to Ebed-melech IN the * 2 King 25.1 Chap. ●2 4 ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah in the tenth moneth came Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and all his army against Jerusalem and they besieged it 2 And in the eleventh year of Zedekiah in the fourth moneth the ninth day of the moneth the city was broken up 3 And all the princes of the king of Babylon came in and sat in the middle gate even Nergal-sharezer Samgar-nebo Sarsechim Rabsaris Nergal-sharezer Rab-mag with all the residue of the princes of the king of Babylon 4 ¶ And it came to pass that when Zedekiah the king of Judah saw them and all the men of war then they fled and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the kings garden by the gate betwixt the two walls and he went out the way of the plain 5 But the Caldeans army pursued after them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho and when they had taken him they brought him up to Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath where he † Heb. spake with him judgements gave judgement upon him 6 Then the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes also the king of Babylon slew all the nobles of Judah 7 Moreover he put out Zedekiahs eyes and bound him † Heb. with two brasen chains or setters with chains to carry him to Babylon 8 ¶ And the Caldeans burnt the kings house and the houses of the people with fire and brake down the walls of Jerusalem 9 Then Nebuzar-adan the ‖ Or chief marshal † Heb. chief of the executioners or slaughter-men and so ver 10 11 c. captain of the guard carried away captive into Babylon the remnant of the people that remained in the city and those that fell away that fell to him with the rest of the people that remained 10 But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left of the poor of the people which had nothing in the land of Judah and gave them vineyards and fields † Heb. in that day at the same time 11 ¶ Now Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah † Heb. by the hand of to Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard saying 12 Take him and † Heb. set thine eyes upon him look well to him and do him no harm but do unto him even as he shall say unto thee 13 So Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard sent and Nebusnasban Rab-saris and Nergal-sharezer Rab-mag and all the king of Babylons Princes 14 Even they sent and took Jeremiah out of the court of the prison and committed him unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son or Shaphan that he should carry him home so he dwelt among the people 15 ¶ Now the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the prison saying 16 Go and speak to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian saying Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring my words upon this city for evil and not for good and they shall be accomplished in that day before thee 17 But I will deliver thee in that day saith the LORD and thou shall not be given into the hand of the men of whom thou art afraid 18 For I will surely deliver thee and thou shalt not fall by the sword but thy life shall be for a prey unto thee because thou hast put thy trust in me saith the LORD CHAP. XL. 1 Jeremiah being set free by Nebuzar-adan goeth to Gedaliah 7 The dispersed Jews repair unto him 13 Johanan reve●ling Ishmatls conspiracy is not beleeved THe word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD after that Nebuzar-adan the captain or the guard had let him go from Ramah when he had taken him being bound in ‖ Or mani●les chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah which were carried away captive unto Babylon 2 And the captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said unto him The LORD thy God hath pronounced this evil upon this place 3 Now the LORD hath brought it and done according as he hath said because ye have sinned against the LORD and have not obeyed his voice therefore this thing is come upon you 4 And now behold I loose thee this day from the chains which were upon thine hand if it seem good unto thee to come with me into Babylon come and † Heb. I will set mine e●e upon thee I will look well unto thee but if it seem ill unto thee to come with me into Babylon forbear behold all the land is before thee whither it seemeth good and convenient for thee to go thither go 5 Now while he was not yet gone back be said Go back also to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan whom the king of Babylon hath made governour over the cities of Judah and dwell with him among the people or go wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go So the captain of the guard gave him victuals and a reward and let him go 6 Then went Jeremiah unto Gedaliah the son of Ahikam to Mizpah and dwelt with him among the people that were left in the land 7 ¶ Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields even they and their men heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governour in the land and had committed unto him men and women and children and of the poor of the land of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon 8 Then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite and Jezaniah the son of a Maachathite they and their men 9 And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan sware unto them and to their men saying Fear not to serve the Caldeans dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon and it shall be well with you 10 As for me Behold I will dwell at Mizpah † Heb. to stand before to serve the Caldeans which will come unto us but ye gather ye wine and summer-fruits and oyl and put
A famine of the word threatned THus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me and behold a basket of summer-fruit 2 And he said Amos what seest thou and I said A basket of summer-fruit Then said the LORD unto me The end is come upon my people of Israel I will not again pass by them any more 3 And the songs of the temple † Heb. shall howl shall be howlings in that day saith the Lord GOD there shall be many dead bodies in every place they shall cast them forth † Heb. be silent with silence 4 ¶ Hear this O ye that swallow up the needy even to make the poor of the land to fail 5 Saying When will the ‖ Or moneth new-moon be gone that we may sell corn and the sabbath that we may † Heb. open set forth wheat making the ephah small and the shekel great and † Heb. perverting the balances of deceit falsifying the balances by deceit 6 That we may buy the poor for * Chap. 2.6 silver and the needy for a pair of shoes yea and sell the refuse of the wheat 7 The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob Surely I will never forget any of their works 8 Shall not the land tremble for this and every one mourn that dwelleth therein and it shall rise up wholly as a floud and it shall be cast out and drowned as by the floud of Egypt 9 And it shall come to pass in that day saith the Lord GOD that I will cause the sun to go down at noon and I will darken the earth in the clear day 10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loyns and baldness upon every head and I will make it as the mourning of an onely son and the end thereof as a bitter day 11 ¶ Behold the days come saith the Lord GOD that I will send a famine in the land not a famine of bread nor a thirst for water but of hearing the words of the LORD 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea and from the north even to the east they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD and shall not finde it 13 In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst 14 They that swear by the sin of Samaria and say Thy god O Dan liveth and the manner of Beer-sheba liveth even they shall fall and never rise up again CHAP. IX 1 The certainty of the desolation 11 The restoring of the tabernacle of David I Saw the Lord standing upon the altar and he said Smite the ‖ Or chapiter or knop lintel of the door that the posts may shake and ‖ Or wound them cut them in the head all of them and I will slay the last of them with the sword he that fleeth of them shall not flee away and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered 2 * Psal 139.8 c. XVI 1 Babylon and other places are threatned with plagues that cannot be avoided 23 and with desolation 40 The servants of the Lord must look for troubles 51 and not hide their sins 74 but leave them and they shall be delivered WO be unto thee Babylon and Asia wo be unto thee Egypt and Syria 2 Gird up your selves with clothes of sack and hair bewail your children and be sorry for your destruction is at hand 3 A sword is sent upon you and who may turn it back 4 A fire is sent among you and who may quench it 5 Plagues are sent unto you and what is he that may drive them away 6 May any man drive away an hungry lion in the wood or may any one quench the fire in stubble when it hath begun to burn 7 May one turn again the arrow that is shot of a strong archer 8 The mighty Lord sendeth the plagues and who is he that can drive them away 9 A fire shall go forth from his wrath and who is he that may quench it 10 He shall cast lightnings and who shall not fear he shall thunder and who shall not be afraid 11 The Lord shall threaten and who shall not be utterly beaten to powder at his presence 12 The earth quaketh and the foundations thereof the sea ariseth up with waves from the deep and the waves of it are troubled and the fishes thereof also before the Lord and before the glory of his power 13 For strong is his right hand that bendeth the bowe his arrows that he shooteth are sharp and shall not miss when they begin to be shot into the ends of the world 14 Behold the plagues are sent and shall not return again until they come upon the earth 15 The fire is kindled and shall not be put out till it consume the foundation of the earth 16 Like as an arrow which is shot of a mighty archer returneth not backward even so the plagues that shall be sent upon earth shall not return again 17 Wo is me wo is me who will deliver me in those days 18 The beginning of sorrows and great mournings the beginning of famine and great death the beginning of wars and the powers shall stand in fear the beginning of evils what shall I do when these evils shall come 19 Behold famine and plague tribulation and anguish are sent as scourges for amendment 20 But for all these things they shall not turn from their wickedness nor be alway mindful of thy scourges 21 Behold victuals shall be so good cheap upon earth that they shall think themselves to be in good case and even then shall ‖ Of plagues evils grow upon earth sword famine and great confusion 22 For many of them that dwell upon earth shall perish of famine and the other that escape the hunger shall the sword destroy 23 And the dead shall be cast out as dung and there shall be no man to comfort them for the earth shall be wasted and the cities shall be cast down 24 There shall be no man lest to till the earth and to sow it 25 The trees shall give fruit and who shall gather them 26 The grapes shall ripen and who shall tread them for all places shall be desolate of men 27 So that one man shall desire to see another and to hear his voice 28 For of a city there shall be ten left and two of the field which shall hide themselves in the thick groves and in the clefts of the rocks 29 As in an orchard of olives upon every tree there are left three or four olives 30 Or as when a vineyard is gathered there are left some clusters of them that diligently seek through the vineyard 31 Even so in those da●s there shall be three or four left by them that search their houses with the sword 32 And the earth shall be laid waste and the fields thereof shall wax old and her ways and all her paths shall grow full of thorns because no man shall travel there through 33 The virgins shall mourn having no bridegrooms the women shall mourn having no husbands their daughters shall mourn having no helpers 34 In the wars shall their bridegrooms be destroyed and their husbands shall perish of famine 35 Hear now these things and understand them ye servants of the Lord. 36 Behold the word of the Lord receive it beleeve not the gods of whom the Lord spake 37 Behold the plagues draw nigh and are not slack 38 As when a woman with childe in the ninth moneth bringeth forth her son within two or three hours of her birth great pains compass her womb which pains when the childe cometh forth they slack not a moment 39 Even so shall not the plagues be slack to come upon the earth and the world shall mourn and sorrows shall come upon it on every side 40 O my people hear my word make you ready to the battel and in those evils be even as pilgrims upon the earth 41 He that selleth let him be as he that fleeth away and he that buyeth as one that will lose 42 He that occupieth merchandise as he that had no profit by it
