and_o the_o gibeonite_n be_v of_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o the_o land_n so_o that_o this_o covenant_n make_v with_o they_o under_o these_o term_n be_v of_o itself_o void_a and_o of_o none_o effect_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o though_o when_o man_n be_v draw_v by_o force_n or_o fraud_n into_o any_o promise_n or_o covenant_n they_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o keep_v that_o promise_n or_o covenant_n and_o that_o because_o he_o to_o who_o the_o promise_n or_o covenant_n be_v make_v with_o who_o only_o we_o have_v to_o do_v in_o this_o case_n can_v by_o any_o rule_n of_o equity_n challenge_v any_o right_n to_o that_o which_o he_o have_v obtain_v by_o deceit_n or_o violence_n yet_o when_o man_n do_v confirm_v any_o such_o promise_n or_o covenant_n by_o oath_n the_o case_n be_v otherwise_o because_o they_o be_v bind_v then_o to_o god_n and_o not_o to_o the_o man_n only_o that_o use_v such_o fraud_n and_o violence_n who_o wickedness_n in_o so_o draw_v they_o into_o a_o oath_n can_v make_v void_a the_o engagement_n that_o lie_v upon_o they_o that_o have_v swear_v in_o regard_n of_o god_n and_o if_o it_o be_v again_o object_v as_o it_o be_v by_o many_o that_o the_o prince_n have_v swear_v to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v against_o the_o express_a command_n of_o god_n who_o have_v often_o enjoin_v they_o to_o destroy_v all_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o canaan_n and_o not_o to_o make_v any_o league_n of_o peace_n with_o they_o as_o be_v note_v before_o upon_o vers_n 7._o to_o this_o i_o answer_v too_o that_o though_o a_o oath_n or_o vow_n do_v not_o bind_v man_n for_o the_o do_v of_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v absolute_o unlawful_a yet_o in_o this_o case_n it_o be_v not_o so_o and_o that_o because_o the_o charge_n which_o god_n have_v give_v they_o for_o slay_v all_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o the_o land_n be_v a_o particular_a command_n &_o so_o far_o only_o to_o bind_v their_o conscience_n as_o it_o may_v be_v obey_v without_o any_o breach_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n as_o in_o rahabs_n case_n be_v also_o evident_a but_o here_o they_o can_v not_o obey_v that_o command_n of_o god_n concern_v their_o destroy_v all_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o canaan_n without_o perjury_n which_o be_v direct_o against_o the_o law_n and_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o beside_o it_o will_v have_v give_v the_o heathen_a great_a occasion_n of_o blaspheme_v the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n if_o they_o have_v swear_v in_o his_o name_n and_o have_v not_o keep_v it_o all_o which_o must_v needs_o lie_v as_o a_o strong_a bond_n upon_o the_o conscience_n of_o the_o israelite_n strict_o to_o observe_v this_o oath_n though_o they_o be_v delude_v by_o the_o gibeonite_n for_o in_o this_o that_o rule_n hold_v good_a i_o will_v have_v mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_v verse_n 21._o but_o let_v they_o be_v hewer_n of_o wood_n and_o drawer_n of_o water_n unto_o all_o the_o congregation_n that_o be_v for_o the_o use_n of_o all_o the_o congregation_n to_o provide_v wood_n and_o water_n which_o few_o than_o when_o they_o be_v number_v the_o first_o time_n at_o their_o first_o come_v out_o of_o egypt_n but_o for_o this_o we_o must_v know_v that_o though_o the_o tribe_n of_o ephraim_n be_v so_o much_o decrease_v at_o that_o last_o number_n of_o the_o people_n yet_o since_o that_o time_n under_o the_o government_n of_o joshua_n they_o may_v be_v great_o increase_v again_o but_o however_o though_o at_o that_o time_n the_o son_n of_o ephraim_n be_v eight_o thousand_o few_o than_o when_o they_o come_v out_o of_o egypt_n yet_o even_o at_o that_o time_n on_o the_o other_o side_n of_o the_o tribe_n of_o manasseh_n there_o be_v twenty_o thousand_o and_o five_o hundred_o more_o than_o at_o the_o first_o number_n num._n 26.34_o and_o therefore_o the_o son_n of_o joseph_n speak_v here_o of_o themselves_o joint_o together_o both_o ephraim_n and_o manasseh_n they_o may_v well_o say_v they_o be_v a_o great_a people_n and_o that_o god_n have_v great_o bless_v they_o in_o regard_n of_o their_o be_v the_o mountain_n out_o of_o which_o the_o canaanite_n be_v already_o expel_v whereof_o you_o have_v the_o possession_n at_o present_a you_o may_v by_o this_o mean_n have_v land_n enough_o to_o dwell_v in_o and_o need_v not_o complain_v that_o your_o portion_n be_v too_o straight_o for_o you_o it_o be_v likely_a that_o when_o the_o son_n of_o joseph_n come_v to_o make_v their_o complaint_n we_o etc._n etc._n these_o first_o word_n seem_v to_o have_v be_v speak_v with_o some_o kind_n of_o anger_n and_o discontent_n joshua_n have_v tell_v they_o what_o they_o shall_v do_v if_o mount_n ephraim_n be_v too_o narrow_a for_o they_o now_o as_o man_n discontent_v be_v wont_a to_o do_v they_o snap_v at_o those_o last_o word_n of_o joshua_n yes_o say_v they_o the_o hill_n be_v not_o
