refuge wither he was fled and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest which was anointed with the holy oyl 26 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge whether he was fled 27 And the revenger of bloud finde him without the borders of the city of his refuge and the revenger of bloud kill the slayer † Heb. no bloud shall be to him he shall not be guilty of bloud 28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession 29 So these things shall be for a statute of judgement unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings 30 Whoso killeth any person the murderer shall be put to death by the * XIV 1 The nine tribes and an half are to have their inheritance by lot 6 Caleb by priviledge obtaineth Hebron ANd these are the countreys which the children of Israel inherited in the land of Canaan * Numb 34.17 which Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel distributed for inheritance unto them 2 * Num. 26.55 and 33.54 By lot was their inheritance as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses for the nine tribes and for the half-tribe 3 For Moses had given the inheritance of two tribes and an half-tribe on the other side Jordan but unto the Levites he gave none inheritance among them 4 For the children of Joseph were two tribes Manasseh Ephraim therefore they gave no part unto the Levites in the land save cities to dwell in with their suburbs for their cattel and for their substance 5 * Numb 35.2 Chap. 21.2 As the LORD commanded Moses so the children of Israel did and they divided the land 6 ¶ Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in Gilgal and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him Thou knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea 7 Fourty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to espie out the land and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart 8 Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt but I wholly * Numb 14.24 followed the LORD my God 9 And Moses sware on that day saying Surely the land whereon thy feet have troden shall be thine inheritance and thy childrens for ever because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God 10 And now behold the LORD hath kept me alive as he said these fourty and five years even since the LORD spake this word unto Moses while the children of Israel † Heb. wal●●d wandred in the wilderness and now lo I am this day fourscore and five years old 11 * Ecclus ●6 9 As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me as my strength was then even so is my strength now for war both to go out and to come in 12 Now therefore give me this mountain whereof the LORD spake in that day for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there and that the cities were great and fenced if so be the LORD will be with me then I shall be able to drive them out as the LORD said 13 And Joshua blessed him and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance 14 * Chap. 21.12 1 Mac. 2.56 Hebron therefore became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite unto this day because that he wholly followed the LORD God of Israel 15 And * Chap. 15.13 the name of Hebron before was Kirjath-arba which Arba was a great man among the Anakims And the land had rest from war CHAP. XV. 1 The borders of the lot of Judah 13 Calebs portion and conquest 16 Othniel for his valour hath Achsah Calebs daughter to wife 18 She obtaineth a blessing of her father 21 The cities of Judah 63 The Jebusites not conquered THis then was the lot of the tribe of the children of Judah by their families * Numb 34.3 even to the border of Edom the * Numb 33.36 wilderness of Zin south-ward was the uttermost part of the south-coast 2 And their south-border was from the shore of the salt-sea from the † Heb. tongue bay that looketh south-ward 3 And it went out to the south-side to ‖ Or the going up to Acrabbim Maaleh-acrabbim and passed along to Zin and ascended up on the south-side unto Cadesh barnea and passed along to Hezron and went up to Adar and fetched a compass to Karkaa 4 From thence it passed toward Azmon and went out unto the river of Egypt and the goings out of that coast were at the sea this shall be your south-coast 5 And the east-border was the salt-sea even unto the end of Jordan and their border in the north-quarter was from the bay of the sea at the uttermost part of Jordan 6 And the border went up to Beth-hogla and passed along by the north of Beth-arabah and the border went up to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben 7 And the border went up toward Debir from the valley of Achor and so north-ward looking toward Gilgal that is before the going up to Adummim which is on the south-side of the river and the border passed towards the waters of Enshemesh and the goings out thereof were at * 1 King ● 8 En-rogel 8 And the border went up by the valley of the son of Hinnom unto the south-side of the Jebusite the fame is Jerusalem the border went up to the top of the mountain that lieth before the valley of Hinnom west-ward which is at the end of the valley of the giants north-ward 9 And the border was drawn from the top of the hill unto the fountain of the water of Nephroah and went out to the cities of mount Ephron and the border was drawn to Baalah which is Kirjath-jearim 10 And the border compassed from Baalah west-ward unto mount Seir and passed along unto the side of mount Jearim which is Chesalon on the north-side went down to Beth-shemesh passed on to Timnah 11 And the border went out unto the side of Ekron north-ward and the border was drawn to Shicron passed along to mount Baalah and went out unto Jabneel and the goings out of the border were at the sea 12 And the west-border was to the great sea and the coast thereof this is the coast of the children of Judah round about according to their families 13 ¶ And unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh he gave a part among the children of Judah according to the commandment of the LORD to Joshua even * Chap. 14.15 ‖ Or Kirjath-arba the city of Arba the father of Anak which city is Hebron 14 And Caleb drove thence * Judg. 1.10 the three sons of Anak Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai the children of Anak 15 And he went up thence to the inhabitants of Debir and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher 16 ¶ And Caleb said He that smiteth Kirjath-sepher and taketh it to him will I give Achsah my

XI 1 Rehoboam raising an army to subdue Israel is forbidden by Shemaiah 5 He strengthneth his kingdom with forts and provision 13 The priests and Levites and such as feared God forsaken by Jeroboam strengthen the kingdom of Judah 18 The wives and children of Rehoboam ANd * 1 King 12.21 c. when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men which were warriours to fight against Israel that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam 2 But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God saying 3 Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon king of Judah and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin saying 4 Thus saith the LORD Ye shall not go up nor fight against your brethren return every man to his house for this thing is done of me And they obeyed the words of the LORD and returned from going against Jeroboam 5 ¶ And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem and built cities for defence in Judah 6 He built even Beth-lehem and Etam and Tekoa 7 And Beth-zur and Shoco and Adullam 8 And Gath and Mareshah and Ziph 9 And Adoraim and Lachish and Azekah 10 And Zorah and Aijalon and Hebron which are in Judah and in Benjamin fenced cities 11 And he fortified the strong holds and put captains in them and store of victual and of oyl and wine 12 And in every several city be put shields and spears and made them exceeding strong having Judah and Benjamin on his side 13 ¶ And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel † Heb. presented themselves to him resorted to him out of all their coasts 14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession came to Judah and Jerusalem for * Chap. 13.9 Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priests office unto the LORD 15 And he ordained him priests for the high places and for the devils and for the calves which he had made 16 And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers 17 So they strengthned the kingdom of Judah and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong three years for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon 18 ¶ And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse 19 Which bare him children Jeush and Shamariah and Zaham 20 And after her he took * 1 King 15.2 Maachah the daughter of Absalom which bare him Abijah and Attai and Ziza and Shelomith 21 And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines for he took eighteen wives and threescore concubines and begat twenty and eight sons and threescore daughters 22 And Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief to be ruler among his brethren for he thought to make him king 23 And he dealt wisely and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countreys of Judah and Benjamin unto every fenced city and he gave them victual in abundance and he desired † Heb. a multitude of wives many wives CHAP. XV. 1 David havin● prepared a place for the ark ordereth the priests and Levites to bring it from Obed-edom 25 He perf●rmeth the solemnity thereof with treat for 29 Michal despiseth him ANd David made him houses in the city of David and prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched for it a tent 2 Then David said † Heb. Isa 36.1 c. these things and the establishment thereof Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entred into Judah and encamped against the fenced cities and thought † Heb. to break them up to win them for himself 2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come and that † Heb. his face was to war he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem 3 He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city and they did help him 4 So there was gathered much people together who stopt all the fountains and the brook that † Heb. overflowed ran through the midst of the sand saying Why should the kings of Assyria come and finde much water 5 Also he strengthned himself built up all the wall that was broker and raise it up to the towers and another wall without repaired Millo in the city of David made ‖ Or swords or weapons darts and shields in abundance 6 And he set captains of war over the people and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city and † Heb. spake to their heart spake comfortably to them saying 7 Be strong and couragious be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria nor for all the multitude that is with him for there be n●● with us then with him 8 With him is an * Jer. 17.5 arm of flesh but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battels And the people † Heb. l●aned rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah 9 ¶ * 2 Kin. 18.17 After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem but he himself laid siege against Lachish and all his † Heb. dominion power with him unto Hezekiah king of Judah and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem saying 10 Thus saith Sennacherib king of Assyria Whereon do ye trust that ye abide ‖ Or in the strong hold in the siege in Jerusalem 11 Doth not Hezekiah perswade you to give over your selves to die by famine and by thirst saying The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria 12 Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem saying Ye shall worship before one altar and burn in●ense upon it 13 Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand 14 Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed that could deliver his people out of mine hand that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand 15 Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you not perswade you on this manner neither y●t beleeve him for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand and out of the hand of my fathers how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand 16 And his servants spake yet more against the LORD God and against his servant Hezekiah 17 He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel and to speak against him saying As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand 18 Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall to affright them and to trouble them that they might take the city 19 And they spake against the God of Jerusalem as against the gods of the people of the earth which wēre the work of the hands of man 20 And for this cause Hezekiah the king and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz prayed and cried to heaven 21 ¶ * 2 Kin. 19.35 c. And the LORD sent an angel which cut off all the mighty men of valour and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria so he returned with shame of face to his own land And when he was come into the house of his god they that came forth of his own bowels † Heb. made him fall slew him there with the sword 22 Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all other and guided them on every side 23 And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem and † Heb. precious things presents to Hezekiah king of Judah so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth 24 ¶ * 2 Kin. 20.1 Isa 38.1 In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death and prayed unto the LORD and he spake unto him and he ‖ Or wrought a miracle for him gave him a signe 25 But Hezekiah rendred not again according to the benefit done unto him for his heart was lifted up therefore there was wrath upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem 26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for † Heb. the lifting up the pride of his heart both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah 27 ¶ And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour and he made himself treasuries for silver and for gold and for precious stones and for spices and for shields and for all manner of † Heb. instrum●nts of desire pleasant jewels 28 Store-houses also for the increase of corn and wine and oyl and stalls for all manner of beasts and cotes for flocks 29 Moreover he provided him cities and possessions of flocks and
bear them not out into the utter court to sanctifie the people 21 Then he brought me forth into the utter court and caused me to pass by the four corners of the court and behold † Heb. a court in a corner of a court and a court in a corner of a court in every corner of the court there was a court 22 In the four corners of the court there were courts ‖ Or made with chimneys joyned of fourty cubits long and thirty broad these four † Heb. cornered corners were of one measure 23 And there was a row of building round about in them round about them four and it was made with boyling-places under the rows round about 24 Then said he unto me These are the places of them that boyl where the ministers of the house shall boyl the sacrifice of the people CHAP. XLVII 1 The vision of the holy waters 6 The vertue of them 13 The borders of the land 22 The division of it by lot AFterward he brought me again unto the door of the house and behold waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward for the forefront of the house stood toward the east and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house at the south-side of the altar 2 Then brought he me out of the way of the gate north-ward and led me about the way without unto the utter gate by the way that looketh east-ward and behold there ran out waters on the right side 3 And when the man that had the line in his hand went forth eastward he measured a thousand cubits and he brought me through the waters the † Heb. waters of the ankles waters were to the ankles 4 Again he measured a thousand and brought me through the waters the waters were to the knees again he measured a thousand and brought me through the waters were to the loyns 5 Afterward he measured a thousand and it was a river that I could not pass over for the waters were risen † Heb. waters of swimming waters to swim in a river that could not be passed over 6 ¶ And he said unto me Son of man hast thou seen this then he brought me and caused me to return to the brink of the river 7 Now when I had returned behold at the † Heb. lip bank of the river were very many * Rev. 22.2 trees on the one side and on the other 8 Then said he unto me These waters issue out toward the east-countrey and go down into the ‖ Or plain desert and go into the sea which being brought forth into the sea the waters shall be healed 9 And it shall come to pass that every thing that liveth which moveth whithersoever the † Heb. two rivers rivers shall come shall live and there shall be a very great multitude of fish because these waters shall come thither for they shall be healed and every thing shall live whither the river cometh 10 And it shall come to pass that the fishers shall stand upon it from En-gedi even unto En-eglaim they shall be a place to spread forth nets their fish shall be according to their kinds as the fish of the great sea exceeding many 11 But the miry places thereof and the marishes thereof ‖ Or and that which shall not be healed shall not be healed they shall be given to salt 12 And by the river upon the bank thereof on this side and on that side † Heb. shall come up shall grow all trees for meat whose leaf shall not fade neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed it shall bring forth ‖ Or principal new fruit according to his moneths because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary and the fruit thereof shall be for meat and the leaf thereof ‖ Or for bruises and scres for * Rev. 22.2 medicine 13 ¶ Thus saith the Lord GOD This shall be the border whereby ye shall inherit the land according to the twelve tribes of Israel Joseph shall have two portions 14 And ye shall inherit it one as well as another concerning the which I ‖ Or swore * Gen. 27.7 and 17.8 and 26.3 and 28.13 lifted up mine hand to give it unto your fathers and this land shall fall unto you for inheritance 15 And this shall be the border of the land toward the north-side from the great sea the way of Hethlon as men go to Zedad 16 Hamath Berothah Sibraim which is between the border of Damascus and the border of Hamath ‖ Or the middle village Hazar-hatticon which is by the coast of Hauran 17 And the border from the sea shall be Hazar-enan the border of Damascus and the north north-ward and the border of Hamath and this is the north-side 18 And the east-side ye shall measure † Heb. from between from Hauran and from Damascus and from Gilead and from the land of Israel by Jordan from the border unto the east-sea and this is the east-side 19 And the south-side south-ward from Tamar even to the waters of ‖ Or Meribah strife in Kadesh the ‖ Or valley river to the great sea and this is the south-side ‖ Or. toward Teman south-ward 20 The west-side also shall be the great sea from the border till a man come over against Hamath this is the west-side 21 So shall ye divide this land unto you according to the tribes of Israel 22 ¶ And it shall come to pass that ye shall divide it by lot for an inheritance unto you and to the strangers that sojourn among you which shall beget children among you and they shall be unto you as born in the countrey among the children of Israel they shall have inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel 23 And it shall come to pass that in what tribe the stranger sojourneth there shall ye give him his inheritance saith the Lord GOD. CHAP. XLVIII 1 23 The portions of the twelve tribes 8 of the sanctuary 15 of the city and suburbs 21 and of the prince 30 The dimensions and gates of the city NOw these are the names of the tribes from the north-end to the coast of the way of Hethlon as one goeth to Hamath Hazar-enan the border of Damascus north-ward to the coast of Hamath for these are his sides east and west † Heb. one portion a portion for Dan. 2 And by the border of Dan from the east-side unto the west-side a portion for Asher 3 And by the border of Asher from the east-side even unto the west-side a portion for Naphtali 4 And by the border of Naphtali from the east-side unto the west-side a portion for Manasseh 5 And by the border of Manasseh from the east-side unto the west-side a portion for Ephraim 6 And by the border of Ephraim from the east-side even unto the west-side a portion for Reuben 7 And by the
border of Reuben from the east-side unto the west-side a portion for Judah 8 ¶ And by the border of Judah from the east-side unto the west-side shall be the offering which ye shall offer of five and twenty thousand reeds in breadth and in length as one of the other parts from the east-side unto the west-side and the sanctuary shall be in the midst of it 9 The oblation that ye shall offer unto the LORD shall be of five and twenty thousand in length and of ten thousand in breadth 10 And for them even for the priests shall be this holy oblation toward the north five and twenty thousand in length and toward the west ten thousand in breadth and toward the east ten thousand in breadth and toward the south five and twenty thousand in length and the sanctuary of the LORD shall be in the midst thereof 11 ‖ Or the sanctified portion shall be for the priests It shall be for the priests that are sanctified of the sons of Zadok which have kept my ‖ Or ward or ordinance charge which went not astray when the children of Israel went astray as the Levites went astray 12 And this oblation of the land that is offered shall be unto them a thing most holy by the border of the Levites 13 And over against the border of the priests the Levites shall have five and twenty thousand in length and ten thousand in breadth all the length shall be five and twenty thousand and the breadth ten thousand 14 And they shall not sell of it neither exchange nor alienate the first-fruits of the land for it is holy unto the LORD 15 ¶ And the five thousand that are left in the breadth over against the five and twenty thousand shall be a profane place for the city for dwelling and for suburbs and the city shall be in the midst thereof 16 And these shall be the measures thereof the north side four thousand and five hundred and the south-side four thousand and five hundred and on the east-side four thousand and five hundred and the west-side four thousand and five hundred 17 And the suburbs of the city shall be toward the north two hundred and fifty and toward the south two hundred and fifty and toward the east two hundred and fifty and toward the west two hundred and fifty 18 And the residue in length over against the oblation of the holy portion shall be ten thousand east-ward and ten thousand west-ward and it shall be over against the oblation of the holy portion and the increase thereof shall be for food unto them that serve the city 19 And they that serve the city shall serve it out of all the tribes of Israel 20 All the oblation shall be five and twenty thousand by five and twenty thousand ye shall offer the holy oblation four-square with the possession of the city 21 ¶ And the residue shall be for the prince on the one side and on the other of the holy oblation and of the possession of the city over against the five and twenty thousand of the oblation toward the east-border and west-ward over against the five and twenty thousand toward the west-border over against the portions for the prince and it shall be the holy oblation and the sanctuary of the house shall be in the midst thereof 22 Moreover from the possession of the Levites and from the possession of the city being in the midst of that which is the princes between the border of Judah and the border of Benjamin shall be for the prince 23 As for the rest of the tribes from the east-side unto the west-side Benjamin shall have † Heb. one portion a portion 24 And by the border of Benjamin from the east-side unto the west-side Simeon shall have a portion 25 And by the border of Simeon from the east-side unto the west-side Issachar a portion 26 And by the border of Issachar from the east-side unto the west-side Zebulun a portion 27 And by the border of Zebulun from the east-side unto the west-side Gad a portion 28 And by the border of Gad at the south-side south-ward the border shall be even from Tamar unto the waters of † Heb. Meribah-kadesh strife in Kadesh and to the river toward the great sea 29 This is the land which ye shall divide by lot unto the tribes of Israel for inheritance and these are their portions saith the Lord GOD. 30 ¶ And these are the goings out of the city on the north-side four thousand and five hundred measures 31 And the gates of the city shall be after the names of the tribes of Israel three gates north-ward one gate of Reuben one gate of Judah one gate of Levi. 32 And at the east-side four thousand and five hundred and three gates and one gate of Joseph one gate of Benjamin one gate of Dan. 33 And at the south-side four thousand and five hundred measures and three gates one gate of Simeon one gate of Issachar one gate of Zebulun 34 At the west-side four thousand and five hundred with their three gates one gate of Gad one gate of Asher one gate of Naphtali 35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures and the name of the city from that day shall be † Heb. Jebovah-shammah The LORD is there ¶ The book of DANIEL CHAP. I. 1 Jehoiakims captivity 3 Ashpenaz taketh Daniel Hananiah Misharl and Azariab 8 They refusing the kings portion do prosper with pulse and water 17 Their excellency in wisdom IN the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah * 2 Kin. 24.2 ● Chr. 36.6 came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem and besieged it 2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand with part of the vessels of the house of God which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god and he brought the vessels into the treasure-house of his god 3 ¶ And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs that he should bring certain of the children of Israel and of the kings feed and of the princes 4 Children in whom was no blemish but well-favoured and skilful in all wisdom and cunning in knowledge and understanding science and such as had ability in them to stand in the kings palace and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Caldeans 5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the kings meat and of † Heb. 〈◊〉 wine of 〈◊〉 drink the wine which he drank so nourishing them three years that at the end thereof they might stand before the king 6 Now among these were of the children of Judah Daniel Hananiah Mishael and Azariah 7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar and to Hananiah of Shadrach and to Mishael of Meshach and to Azariah of Abed-nego 8 ¶ But Daniel purposed in his
kings and gave them and their friends silver and gold and many presents and found favour in their sight 61 At that time certain pestilent fellows of Israel men of a wicked life assembled themselves against him to accuse him but the king would not hear them 62 Yea more then that the king commanded to take off his garments and clothe him in purple and they did so 63 Also he made him sit by himself and said unto his princes Go with him into the midst of the city and make proclamation that no man complain against him of any matter and that no man trouble him for any manner of cause 64 Now when his accusers saw that he was honoured according to the proclamation and clothed in purple they fled all away 65 So the king honoured him and wrote him amongst his chief friends and made him a duke and ‖ Or governour of a province partaker of his dominion 66 Afterward Jonathan returned to Jerusalem with peace gladness 67 Furthermore in the hundred threescore and fifth year came Demetrius son of Demetrius out of Crete into the land of his fathers 68 Whereof when king Alexander heard tell he was right sorry and returned into Antioch 69 Then Demetrius made Apollonius the governour of Celosyria his general who gathered together a great host and camped in Jamnia and sent unto Jonathan the high priest saying 70 Thou alone liftest up thy self against us and I am laughed to scorn for thy sake and reproached and why dost thou vaunt thy power against us in the mountains 71 Now therefore if thou trustest in thine own strength come down to us into the plain field and there let us trie the matter together for with me is the power of the cities 72 Ask and learn who I am and the rest that take our part and they shall tell thee that thy foot is not able to stand before our face for thy fathers have been twice put to flight in their own land 73 Wherefore now thou shalt not be able to abide the hors-men and so great a power in the plain where is neither stone nor flint nor place to flee unto 74 So when Jonathan heard these words of Apollonius he was moved in his minde and choosing ten thousand men he went out of Jerusalem where Simon his brother met him for to help him 75 And he pitched his tents against Joppe but they of Joppe shut him out of the city because Apollonius had a garison there 76 Then Jonathan laid siege unto it whereupon they of the city let him in for fear and so Jonathan wan Joppe 77 Whereof when Apollonius heard he took three thousand hors-men with a great host of footmen and went to Azotus ‖ Or as though be would pass through it as one that journeyed and therewithal ‖ Or led his company drew him forth into the plain because he had a great number of hors-men in whom he put his trust 78 Then Jonathan followed after him to Azotus where the armies joyned battel 79 Now Apollonius had left a thousand hors-men in ambush 80 And Jonathan knew that there was an ambushment behinde him for they had compassed in his host and cast darts at the people from morning till evening 81 But the people stood still as Jonathan had commanded them and so the ‖ Joseph Ant. lib. 13. cap. 8. enemies horses were tired 82 Then brought Simon forth his host and set them against the footmen for the hors-men were spent who were discomfited by him and fled 83 The hors men also being scattered in the field fled to Azotus and went into Beth-dagon their idols temple for safety 84 But Jonathan set fire on Azotus and the cities round about it and took their spoils and the temple of Dagon with them that were fled into it he burnt with sire 85 Thus there were burnt and slain with the sword welnigh eight thousand men 85 And from thence Jonathan removed his host and camped against Ascalon where the men of the cities came forth and met him with great pomp 87 After this returned Jonathan and his host unto Jerusalem having many spoils 88 Now when king Alexander heard these things he honoured Jonathan yet more 89 And sent him a buckle of gold as the use is to be given to such as are of the kings bloud he gave him also Accaron with the borders thereof in possession CHAP. XI 12 Ptolemeus taketh away his daughter from Alexander and entreth upon his kingdom 17 Alexander is slain and Ptolemeus dieth within three days 20 Jonathan besiegeth the towre at Jerusalem 26 The Jews and be are much honoured by Demetrius 48 who is rescued by the Jews from his own subjects in Antioch 57 Antiochus the younger honoureth Jonathan 61 His exploits in divers places ANd the king of Egypt gathered together a great host like the sand that lieth upon the sea-shore and many ships and went about through deceit to get Alexanders kingdom and joyn it to his own 2 Whereupon he took his journey into Syria in peaceable manner so as they of the cities opened unto him and met him for king Alexander had commanded them so to do because he was his father in law 3 Now as Ptolemee entred into the cities he set in every one of them a garison of souldiers to keep it 4 And when he came near to Azotus they shewed him the temple of Dagon that was burnt and Azotus and the suburbs thereof that were destroyed and the bodies that were cast abroad and them that he had burnt in the battel for they had made heaps of them by the way where he should pass 5 Also they told the king whatsoever Jonathan had done to the intent he might blame him but the king held his peace 6 Then Jonathan met the king with great pomp at Joppe where they saluted one another and † Gr. slept lodged 7 Afterward Jonathan when he had gone with the king to the river called Eleutherus returned again to Jerusalem 8 King Ptolemee therefore having gotten the dominion of the cities by the sea unto Seleucia upon the Sea cost imagined wicked counsels against Alexander 9 Whereupon he sent ambassadours unto king Demetrius saying Come let us make a league betwixt us and I will give thee my daughter whom Alexander hath and thou shalt reign in thy fathers kingdom 10 For I repent that I gave my daughter unto him for he sought to slay me 11 Thus did he slander him because he was desirous of his kingdom 12 Wherefore he took his daughter from him and gave her to Demetrius and forsook Alexander so the their hatred was openly known 13 Then Ptolemee entred into Antioch where he set two crowns upon his head the crown of Asia and of Egypt 14 In the mean season was king Alexander in Cilicia because those that dwelt in those parts had revolted from him 15 But when Alexander heard of this he came to war against him whereupon king
called the ladder of Tyrus unto the borders of Egypt 60 Then Jonathan ‖ Or want beyond the river passed through the cities Or went passed beyond the river and through the cities Gr. went forth and passed through the cities beyond the water and all the forces of Syria gathered themselves unto him for to help him and when he came to Ascalon they of the city met him honourably 61 From whence he went to Gaza but they of Gaza shut him out wherefore he said siege unto it and burned ‖ Or the places thereabout the suburbs thereof with fire and spoiled them 62 Afterward when they of Gaza made supplication unto Jonathan † Gr. be gave them the right hand he made peace with them and took the sons of their chief men for hostages and sent them to Jerusalem and passed through the countrey unto Damascus 63 Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius princes were come to Cades which is in Galilee with a great power purposing ‖ Or to remove him from the affairs of the kingdom to remove him out of the countrey 64 He went to meet them and left Simon his brother in the countrey 65 Then Simon encamped against Bethsura and sought against it a long season and shut it up 66 But they desired to have peace with him w e he granted them and then put them out from thence and took the city set a garison in it 67 As for Jonathan and his host they pitched at the water of Genesar from whence betimes in the morning they gat them to the plain of Nasor 68 And behold the host of strangers met them in the plain who having laid men in ambush for him in the mountains came themselves over against him 69 So when they that say in ambush rose out of their places and joyned battel all that were of Jonathans side sled 70 Insomuch as there was not one of them lest except Mattathias the son of Absalom and Judas the son of Calphi the captains of the host 71 Then Jonathan rent his clothes and cast earth upon his head and prayed 72 Afterwards turning again to battel he put them to flight and so they ran away 73 Now when his own men that were fled saw this they turned again unto him and with him pursued them to Cades even unto their own tents and there they camped 74 So there were slain of the heathen that day about three thousand men but Jonathan returned to Jerusalem CHAP. XII 1 Jonathan reneweth his league with the Romanes and Lacedemonians 28 The sorees of Demetrius thinking to surprise Jonathan flee away for fear 35 Jonathan fortifieth the castles in Judea 48 and is shut up by the ●ra●● of Tryphon in Ptolemais NOw when Jonathan saw that the time served him he chose certain men and sent them to Rome for to confirm and renew the friendship that they had with them 2 He sent letters also to the Lacedemonians and to other places for the same purpose 3 So they went unto Rome and entred into the Senate and said Jonathan the high priest and the people of the Jews sent us unto you to the end you should renew the friendship which you had with them and league as in former time 4 Upon this the Romanes gave them letters unto the governours of every place that they should bring them into the land of Judea peaceably 5 And this is the copy of the letters which Jonathan wrote unto the Lacedemonians 6 Jonathan the high priest and the elders of the nation and the priests and the other people of the Jews unto the Lacedemonians their brethren send greeting 7 There were letters sent in times past unto Onias the high priest from ‖ Areus Look Joseph Antiq l. 13. c. 8 Darius who reigned then among you to signifie that you are our brethren as the copy here under-written doth specifie 8 At which time Onias entreated the embassadour that was sent honorably and received the letters wherein declaration was made of the ‖ Or kindred Jo● Anti● league and friendship 9 Therefore we also albeit we need none of these things for that we have the holy books of scripture in our hands to comfort us 10 Have nevertheless attempted to send unto you for the renewing of brotherhood friendship lest we should become strangers unto you altogether for there is a long time passed since you sent unto us 11 We therefore at all times without ceasing both in our feasts and other convenient days do remember you in the sacrifices which we offer and in our prayers as reason is and as it becometh us to think upon our brethren 12 And we are right glad of your honour 13 As for our selves we have had great troubles and wars on every side forsomuch as the kings that are round about us have sought against us 14 Howbeit we would not be troublesom unto you nor to others of our confederates and friends in these wars 15 For we have help from heaven that succoureth us so as we are delivered from our enemies and our enemies are brought under foot 16 For this cause we chose Numenius the son of Antiochus and Antipater the son of Jason and sent them unto the Romanes to renew the amity that we had with them and the former league 17 We commanded them also to go unto you and to salute you to deliver you our letters concerning the renewing of our brotherhood 18 Wherefore now ye shall do well to give us an answer thereto 19 And this is the copy of the letters ‖ Read out of Joseph which Are●● sent to O●●as which Oniares sent 20 Areus king of the Lacedemonians to Onias the high priest greeting 21 It is found in writing that the Lacedemonians and Jews are brethren and that they are of the stock of Abraham 22 Now therefore since this is come to our knowledge you shall do well to write unto us of your † Gr. pean prosperity 23 We do write back again to you that your cattel and goods are ours and ours are yours We do command therefore our ambassadours to make report unto you on this wife 24 Now when Jonathan heard that Demetrius princes were come to fight against him with a greater host then afore 25 He removed from Jerusalem and met them in the land of Amathis for he gave them no respite ‖ Or t● set foot in his countrey or to invade his countrey to enter his countrey 26 He sent spies also unto their tents who came again and told him that they were appointed to come upon them in the night-season 27 Wherefore so soon as the sun was down Jonathan commanded his men to watch and to be in arms that all the night long they might be ready to fight also he sent forth sentiness round about the host 28 But when the adversaries heard that Jonathan and his men were ready for battel they feared and trembled in their hearts and
