XXXV 1 Eight and fourty cities for the Levites with their subur●s and measure thereof 6 Six of them are to be cities of refuge 9 The laws of murder 31 No satisfaction for murder ANd the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho saying 2 * Josh 21. ● Command the children of Israel that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them 3 And the cities shall they have to dwell in and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattel and for their goods and before the congregation in judgement 13 And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge 14 Ye shall give three cities on this side Jordan and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan which shall be cities of refuge 15 These six cities shall be a refuge both for the children of Israel and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither 16 * Exod. 21.14 And if he smite him with an instrument of iron so that he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 17 And if he smite him † Heb. with a stone of the band with throwing a stone wherewith he may die and he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 18 Or if he smite him with an hand-weapon of wood wherewith he may die and he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 19 The revenger of bloud himself shall slay the murderer when he meeteth him he shall slay him 20 But * refuge wither he was fled and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest which was anointed with the holy oyl 26 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge whether he was fled 27 And the revenger of bloud finde him without the borders of the city of his refuge and the revenger of bloud kill the slayer † Heb. no bloud shall be to him he shall not be guilty of bloud 28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession 29 So these things shall be for a statute of judgement unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings 30 Whoso killeth any person the murderer shall be put to death by the * Let me pass through thy land I will go along by the high-way I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left 28 Thou shalt sell me meat for money that I may eat and give me water for money that I may drink on●ly I will pass through on my feet 29 As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir and the Moabites which dwell in Ar did unto me until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him for the LORD thy God hardned his spirit and made his heart obstinate that he migh deliver him into thy hand as appeareth this day 31 And the LORD said unto me Behold I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee begin to possess that thou mayest inherit his land 32 * Numb 21.23 Then Sihon came out against us he and all his people to fight at Jahaz 33 And the LORD our God delivered him before us and we smote him and his sons and all his people 34 And we took all his cities at that time and utterly destroyed † Heb. every city of men and women and little ones the men and the women and the little ones of every city we left none to remain 35 Onely the cattel we took for a prey unto our selves and the spoil of the cities which we took 36 From Aroer which is by the brink of the river Arnon and from the city that is by the river even unto Gilead there was not one city too strong for us the LORD our God delivered all unto us 37 Onely unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not nor unto any place of the river Jabbok nor unto the cities in the mountains nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us CHAP. III. 1 The story of the conquest of Og king of Bashan 11 The bigness of his bed 12 The distribution of those lands to the two tribes and half 23 Moses prayer to enter into the land 26 He is permitted to see it THen we turned and went up the way to Bashan and * Numb 21.33 c. Ch. 29.7 Og the king of Bashan came out against us he and all his people to battel at Edrei 2 And the LORD said unto me Fear him not for I will deliver him and all his people and his land into thy hand and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto * Numb 21.24 Sihon king of the Amorites which dwelt at Heshbon 3 So the LORD our God delivered into our hands * Numb 21.33 Og also the king of Bashan and all his people and we smote him until none was left to him remaining 4 And we took all his cities at that time there was not a city which we took not from them threescore cities all the region of Argob the kingdom of Og in Bashan 5 All these cities were fenced with high walls gates and bars beside unwalled towns a great many 6 And we utterly destroyed them as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon utterly destroying the men women and children of every city 7 But all the cattel and the spoil of the cities we took for a prey to our selves 8 And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side Jordan from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon 9 Which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion and the Amorites call it Shenir 10 All the cities of the plain and all Gilead and all Bashan unto Salchah and Edrei cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan 11 For onely Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants behold his bed-stead was a bed-stead of iron is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon nine cubits was the length thereof and four cubits the breadth of it after the cubit of a man 12 And this land which we possessed at that time from Aroer which is by the river Arnon and half mount Gilead and * Numb 22.33 Jos 13.8 c. the cities thereof gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites 13 And the rest of Gilead and all Bashan being the kingdom of Og gave I unto the half-tribe of Manasseh all the region of Argob with all Bashan which was called the land of giants 14 Jair the son of Manasseh took all the countrey of Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi and called them after his own name Bashan * Numb 32.41 havoth-jair unto this da● 15 And I gave Gilead unto Machir 16 And unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley and the border even unto the river Jabbok which is the border of the children of Ammon 17 The plain also and Jordan and the coast thereof from Chinnereth even unto the sea of the plain even the salt-sea ‖ Or under the springs of pisgab or the
and earth to witness against you this day that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto you go over Jordan to possess it ye shall not prolong your days upon it but shall utterly be destroyed 27 And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen whither the LORD shall lead you 28 And there ye shall serve gods the work of mens hands wood and stone which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell 29 But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God thou shalt finde him if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul 30 When thou art in tribulation and all these things † Heb. have found thee are come upon thee even in the latter days if thou turn to the LORD thy God and shalt be obedient unto his voice 31 For the LORD thy God is a merciful God he will not forsake thee neither destroy thee nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them 32 For ask now of the days that are past which were before thee since the day that God created man upon the earth and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other whether there have been any such thing as this great thing is or hath been heard like it 33 Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire as thou hast heard and live 34 Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation by temptations by signs and by wonders and by war and by a mighty hand and by a stretched-out arm and by great terrours according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes 35 Unto thee it was shewed that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God there is none else beside him 36 Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice that he might instruct thee and upon earth he shewed thee his great fire and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire 37 And because he loved thy fathers therefore he chose their seed after them and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt 38 To drive out nations from before thee greater and mighti●● then thou art to bring thee in to give thee their land for an inheritance as it is this day 39 Know therefore this day and consider it in thine heart that the LORD he is God in heaven above and upon the earth beneath there is none else 40 Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes and his commandments which I command thee this day that it may go well with thee and with thy children after thee and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth which the LORD thy God giveth thee for ever 41 ¶ Then Moses severed three cities on this side Jordan toward the sun-rising 42 That the slayer might flee thither which should kill his neighbour unawares and hated him not in times past and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live 43 Namely * Jos 20.8 Bezer in the wilderness in the plain-countrey of the Reubenites and Ramoth in Gilead of the Gadites and Golan in Bashan of the Manassites 44 ¶ And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel 45 These are the testimonies and the statutes and the judgements which Moses spake unto the children of Israel after they came forth out of Egypt 46 On this side Jordan in the valley over against Beth-peor in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites who dwelt at Heshbon whom Moses and the children of Israel * Numb 21.24 Chap. 1.4 smote after they were come forth out of Egypt 47 And they possessed his land and the land * Numb 21.33 Chap. 3.3 of Og king of Bashan two kings of the Amorites which were on this side Jordan toward the sun-rising 48 From Aroer which is by the bank of the river Arnon even unto mount Sion which is Hermon 49 And all the plain on this side Jordan east-ward even unto the sea of the plain under the * Chap. 3.17 springs of Pisgah CHAP. LORD said unto Joshua * Deu. 1.21 7.18 Fear not neither be thou dismayed take all the people of war with thee and arise go up to Ai see I have given into thy hand the king of Ai and his people and his city and his land 2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto * Ch. 6.21 Jericho and her king onely * Deu. 2● 14 the spoil thereof and the cattel thereof shall ye take for a prey unto your selves lay thee an ambush for the city behind it 3 ¶ So Joshua arose and all the people of war to go up against Ai and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour and sent them away by night 4 And he commanded them saying Behold ye shall lie in wait against the city even behinde the city go not very far from the city but be ye all ready 5 And I and all the people that are with me will approach unto the city and it shall come to pass when they come out against us as at the first that we will flee before them 6 For they will come out after us till we have † Heb. ●ull●d drawn them from the city for they will say They flee before us as at the first therefore we will f●●e before them 7 Then ye shall rise up from the ambush and seise upon the city for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand 8 And it shall be when ye have taken the city that ye shall set the city on fire according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do See I have commanded you 9 ¶ Joshua therefore sent them forth and they went to lie in ambush and abode between Beth-el and Ai on the west-side of Ai but Joshua lodged that night among the people 10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning and numbred the people and went up he and the elders of Israel before the people to Ai. 11 And all the people even the people of war that were with him went up and drew nigh and came before the city and pitched on the north-side of Ai now there was a valley between them and Ai. 12 And he took about five thousand men and set them to lie in ambush between Beth-el and Ai on the west-side ‖ Or of Ai. of the city 13 And when they had set the people even all the host that was on the north of the city and † Heb. their lying in wait their liers in wait on the west of the city Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley 14 ¶ And it came to pass when the king of Ai saw it that they hasted and rose up early and the men of the city went out against Israel to battel he and all his people at a time appointed before the plain but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behinde the city 15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them and fled by the way of the wilderness 16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them and they pursued after Joshua and were drawn away from the city 17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el that went not out after Israel and they left the city open and pursued after Israel 18 And the LORD said unto Joshua Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai for I will give it into thine hand And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city 19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place and they ran assoon as he had stretched out his hand and they entred into the city and took it and hasted and set the city on fire 20 And when the men of Ai looked behinde them they saw and behold the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven and they had no † Heb. hand power to flee this way or that way and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that the smoke of the city ascended then they turned again and slew the men of Ai. 22 And the other issued out of the city against them so they were in the midst of Israel some on this side and some on that side and they smote them so that they * Deut. 7.2 let none of them remain or escape 23 And the king of Ai they took alive and brought him to Joshua 24 And it came to pass when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field in the wilderness wherein they chased them and when they were all ●aln on the edge of the sword until they were consumed that all the Israelites returned unto Ai and smote it with the edge of the sword 25 And so it was that all that fell that day both of men and women were twelve thousand even all the men of Ai. 26 For Joshua drew not his hand back wherewith he stretched out the spear until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27 * Num. 31.22.26 Onely the cattel and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves according unto the word of the LORD which he * Vers 2. commanded Joshua 28 And Joshua burnt Ai and made it an heap for ever even a desolation unto this day 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until even-tide and assoon as the sun was down Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree and cast it at the entring of the gate of the city and * Chap. 7.26 raise thereon a great heap of stones that remaineth unto this day 30 ¶ Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal 31 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel as it is written in the * Exod. 20.25 Deut. 27.5 book of the law of Moses an altar of whole stones over which no man
had done to Hebron so he did to Debir and to the king thereof as he had done also to Libnah and to her king 40 ¶ So Joshua smote all the countrey of the hills and of the south and of the vale and of the springs and all their kings he left none remaining but utterly destroyed all that breathed as the LORD God of Israel * Deu. 20 16 17. commanded 41 And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza and all the countrey of Goshen even unto Gibeon 42 And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel 43 And Joshua returned and all Israel with him unto the camp to Gilgal CHAP. XI 1 Divers kings overcome at the waters of Merom 10 Hazar is taken and burnt 16 All the countrey taken by Joshua 21 The Anakims cut off ANd it came to pass when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things that he sent to Jobab king of Madon and to the king of Shimron and to the king of Achshaph 2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains and of the plains south of Cinneroth and in the valley and in the borders of Dor on the west 3 And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west and to the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Jebusite in the mountains and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh 4 And they went out they and all their hosts with them much people even as the sand that is upon the sea-shore in multitude with horses and chariots very many 5 And when all these kings were † Heb. assembled by appointment met together they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel 6 ¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua Be not afraid because of them for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel thou shalt hough their horses and burn their chariots with fire 7 So Joshua came and all the people of war with him against them by the waters of Merom suddenly and they fell upon them 8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel who smote them and chased them unto ‖ Or Zidon-ra●bab great Zidon and unto ‖ Or salt-pits † Heb. burnings of waters Misrephothmaim and unto the valley of Mizpeh east-ward and they smote them until they left them none remaining 9 And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him he houghed their horses and burnt their chariots with fire 10 ¶ And Joshua at that time turned back and took Hazor and smote the king thereof with the sword for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms 11 And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword utterly destroying them there was not † Heb. any breath any left to breathe and he burnt Hazor with fire 12 And all the cities of those kings and all the kings of them did Joshua take and smote them with the edge of the sword and he utterly destroyed them * Numb 23.52 Deut. 7.2 and 20.16.17 as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded 13 But as for the cities that stood still † Heb. on their beap in their strength Israel burned none of them save Hazor onely that did Joshua burn 14 And all the spoil of these cities and the cattel the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves but every man they smote with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them neither left they any to breathe 15 ¶ * Exod. 34.11 As the LORD commanded Moses his servant so * Deut. 7.2 did Moses command Joshua and so did Joshua † Heb. be removed nothing he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses 16 So Joshua took all that land the hills and all the south-countrey and all the land of Goshen and the valley and the plain and the mountain of Israel and the valley of the same 17 Even from ‖ Or the smooth mountain the mount Halak that goeth up to Seir even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon and all their kings he took and smote them and slew them 18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings 19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel save * Chap. 2.3 the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon all other they took in battel 20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battel that he might destroy them utterly and that they might have no favour but that he might destroy them as the LORD commanded Moses 21 ¶ And at that time came Joshua and cut off the Anakims from the mountains from Hebron from Debir from Anab and from all the mountains of Judah and from all the mountains of Israel Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities 22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel onely in Gaza in Gath and in Ashdod there remained 23 So Joshua took the whole land according to all that the LORD said unto Moses and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel * Numb 26.53 according to their divi●ions by their tribes And the land rested from war CHAP. 49 The children of Israel give an inheritance to Joshua ANd the second lot came forth to Simeon even for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah 2 And they had in their inheritance Beer-sheba and Sheba and Moladah 3 And Hazar-shual and Balah and Azem 4 And Eltolad and Bethul and Hormah 5 And Ziklag and Beth-marcaboth and Hazar-susah 6 And Beth-lebaoth and Sharuhen thirteen cities and their villages 7 Ain Remmon and Ether and Ashan four cities their villages 8 And all the villages that were round about these cities to Baalath-beer Ramath of the south This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families 9 Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon for the part of the children of Judah was too much for them therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them 10 ¶ And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid 11 And their border went up toward the sea and Maralah and reached to Dabasheth and reached to the river that is before Jokneam 12 And turned from Sarid east-ward toward the sun-rising unto the border of Chisloth-tabor and then goeth out to Daberath and goeth up to Japhia 13 And from thence passeth on along on the east to Gittah-hepher to Ittah-kazin and goeth out to Remmon ‖ Or whicht● drawn methoar to Neah 14 And the border compasseth it on the north-side to Hannathon and the out-goings thereof are in the valley of Jiphthah-el 15 And Kattath and Nahallal and Shimron and Idalah and Bethlehem twelve cities with their villages 16 This is the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families these cities with their villages 17 ¶ And the fourth lot came out to Issachar for the children of Issachar according to their families 18 And their border was toward Jezreel and Chesulloth Shunem 19 And Hapharaim and Shihon and Anaharath 20 And Rabbith and Kishion and Abez 21 And Remeth and Engannim and En-haddah and Beth-pazzer 22 And the coast reacheth to Tabor and Shahazimah and Beth-shemesh and the out-goings of their border were at Jordan sixteen cities with their villages 23 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families the cities and their villages 24 ¶ And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families 25 And their border was Helkath and Hali and Beten Achshaph 26 And Alammelech and Amad and Misheal and reacheth to Carmel west-ward and to Shihor-libnath 27 And turneth toward the sun-rising to Beth-dagon and reacheth to Zebulun and to the valley of Jiphthah-el toward the north-side of Beth-emek and Neiel and goeth out to Cabul on the left hand 28 And Hebron and Rehob and Hammon and Kanah even unto great Zidon 29 And then the coast turneth to Ramah and to the strong city † Heb. Tzor Tyre and the coast turneth to Hosah and the out-goings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib 30 Ummah also and Aphek and Rehob twenty and two cities with their villages 31 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families these cities with their villages 32 ¶ The sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali even for the children of Naphtali according to their families 33 And their coast was from Heleph from Allon to Zaanannim and Adami Nekeb and Jabneel unto Lakum and the out goings thereof were at Jordan 34 And then the coast turneth west-ward to Aznoth-tabor and goeth out from thence to Hukkok and reacheth to Zebulun on the south-side and reacheth to Asher on the west-side and to Judah upon Jordan toward the sun-rising 35 And the fenced cities are Ziddim Zer and Hammath Rakkath and Cinnereth 36 And Adamah and Ramah and Hazor 37 And Kedesh and Edrei and En-hazor 38 And Iron and Migdal-el Horem and Beth-anath and Beth-shemesh nineteen cities with their villages 39 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families the cities and their villages 40 ¶ And the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families 41 And the coast of their inheritance was Zorah and Eshtaol and Ir-shemesh 42 And Shaalabbin and Ajalon and Jethlah 43 And Elon and Thimnathah and Ekron 44 And Eltekeh and Gibbethon and Baalath 45 And Jehud and Bene-berak and Gath-rimmon 46 And Me-jarkon and Rakkon with the border ‖ Or over against before ‖ Or Joppa Act. 9.36 Japho 47 And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem and took it and smote it with the edge of the sword possessed it dwelt therein and called Leshem * Judg. 18 29. Dan after the name of Dan their father 48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families these cities with their villages 49 ¶ When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them 50 According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked even * Chap. 24.30 Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim and he built the city and dwelt therein 51 * Numb 3● 17 These are the inheritances which Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel divided for an inheritance by lot in Shi●oh before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation so they made an end of dividing the countrey CHAP. XX. 1 God commandeth 7 and the children of Israel appoint the six cities of refuge THe LORD also spake unto Jeshua saying 2 Speak to the children of Israel saying * Ex. 21.13 Num. 35.6 11 14. Deut. 19.2 Appoint out for you cities of refuge whereof I spake unto you by the hand or Moses 3 That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of bloud 4 And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entring of the gate of the city and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city they shall take him into the city unto them and give him a place that he may dwell among them 5 And if the avenger of bloud pursue after him then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand because he smote his neighbour unwittingly and hated him not before time 6 And he shall dwell in that city until he
in the cities thereof 25 And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there that they feared not the LORD therefore the LORD sent lions among them which slew some of them 26 Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria saying The nations which thou hast removed and placed in the cities of Samaria know not the manner of the God of the land therefore he hath sent lions among them and behold they slay them because they know not the manner of the God of the land 27 Then the king of Assyria commanded saying Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence let them go and dwell there and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land 28 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Beth-el and taught them how they should fear the LORD 29 Howbeit every nation made gods of their own and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt 30 And the men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth and the men of Cuth made Nergal and the men of Hamath made Ashima 31 And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech the gods of Sepharvaim 32 So they feared the LORD and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places 33 * Zeph. 1.5 They feared the LORD and served their own gods after the manner of the nations ‖ Or who c●●●●ed them away from thence whom they carried away from thence 34 Unto this day they do after the former manners they fear not the LORD neither do they after their statutes or after their ordinances or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob * Gen. 32.28 1 Kings 18.21 whom he named Israel 35 With whom the LORD had made a covenant and charged them saying * Judg. 6 1● Ye shall not fear other gods nor bow your selves to them norserve them nor sacrifice to them 35 But the LORD who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched-out arm him shall ye fear and him shall ye worship and to him shall ye do sacrifice 37 And the statutes and the ordinances and the law and the commandment which he wrote for you ye shall observe to do for evermore and ye shall not fear other gods 38 And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget neither shall ye fear other gods 39 But the LORD your God ye shall fear and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies 40 Howbeit they did not hearken but they did after their former manner 41 So these nations feared the LORD and served their graven images both their children and their childrens children as did their fathers so do they unto this day CHAP. XVIII 1 Hezekiah his good reign 4 He destroyeth idolatry and prospereth 9 Samaria is curried captive for their sins 13 Sennacherib invading Judah is pacified by a tribute 17 Rab-shakeh sent by Sennacherib again revileth Hezekiah and by blasphemous perswasions soliciteth the people to revolt NOw it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel that * 2 Chr. 28.27 and 10.1 He is called Ezekias Mat. 1.9 Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign 2 Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem his mothers name also was Abi the daughter of Zachariah 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that David his father did 4 ¶ He removed the high places and brake the † Heb. statute images and cut down the groves and brake in pieces the * Num. 11.9 brasen serpent that Moses had made for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it and he called it Nehushtan 5 He trusted in the LORD God of Israel so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah nor any that were before him 6 For he clave to the LORD and departed not † Heb. from after him from following him but kept his commandments which the LORD commanded Moses 7 And the LORD was with him and he prospered whithersoever he went forth and he rebelled against the king of Assyria and served him not 8 He smote the Philistines even unto † Heb. Azzah Gaz● and the borders thereof from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city 9 ¶ And * Chap. 17.3 it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it 10 And at the end of three years they took it even in the sixth year of Hezekiah that is * Chap. 17.6 the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel Samaria was taken 11 And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes 12 Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God but transgressed his covenant and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded and would not hear them nor do them 13 ¶ Now * 2 Chr. 32.1 Isa 36.1 Ecclus 48.18 in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did † Heb. Sanberib Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah and took them 14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish saying I have offended return from me that which thou puttest on me I will bear And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver thirty talents of gold 15 And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the kings house 16 At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid and gave † Heb. them it to the king of Assyria 17 ¶ And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rablaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a † Heb. heavy great host against Jerusalem and they went up and came to Jerusalem and when they were come up they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool which is in the high-way of the fullers field 18 And when they had called to the king there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah which was over the houshold and Shebna the ‖ Or secretary scribe and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder 19 And Rab-shakeh
of Aaron the priests which were in the fields of the suburbs of their cities in every several city the men that were expressed by name to give portions to all the males among the priests and to all that were reckoned by genealogies among the Levites 20 ¶ And thus did Hezekiah throughout all Judah and wrought that which was go●d and right and truth before the LORD his God 21 And in every work that he began in the service of the house of God and in the law and in the commandments to seek his God he did it with all his heart and prospered CHAP XXXII 1 Sennackerib invadin● Judah Hezekiah fortifieth himself and encourageth his people 9 Against the blasphemies of Sennacherib by message and letters Hezekiah and Isaiah pray 21 An angel destroyeth the bost of the Ass●rians to the glory of Hezekiah 24 Hezekiah praying in his sickness God giveth him a signe of recovery 25 He waxing proud is humbled by God 27 His wealth and works 21 His errour in the embassare of Babylon 32 He dying Manasseh succeedeth him AFter * 2 Kin. 18.13 c. Isa 36.1 c. these things and the establishment thereof Sennacherib king of Assyria came and entred into Judah and encamped against the fenced cities and thought † Heb. to break them up to win them for himself 2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come and that † Heb. his face was to war he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem 3 He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city and they did help him 4 So there was gathered much people together who stopt all the fountains and the brook that † Heb. overflowed ran through the midst of the sand saying Why should the kings of Assyria come and finde much water 5 Also he strengthned himself built up all the wall that was broker and raise it up to the towers and another wall without repaired Millo in the city of David made ‖ Or swords or weapons darts and shields in abundance 6 And he set captains of war over the people and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city and † Heb. spake to their heart spake comfortably to them saying 7 Be strong and couragious be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria nor for all the multitude that is with him for there be n●● with us then with him 8 With him is an * Jer. 17.5 arm of flesh but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battels And the people † Heb. l●aned rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah 9 ¶ * 2 Kin. 18.17 After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem but he himself laid siege against Lachish and all his † Heb. dominion power with him unto Hezekiah king of Judah and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem saying 10 Thus saith Sennacherib king of Assyria Whereon do ye trust that ye abide ‖ Or in the strong hold in the siege in Jerusalem 11 Doth not Hezekiah perswade you to give over your selves to die by famine and by thirst saying The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria 12 Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars and commanded Judah and Jerusalem saying Ye shall worship before one altar and burn in●ense upon it 13 Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand 14 Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed that could deliver his people out of mine hand that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand 15 Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you not perswade you on this manner neither y●t beleeve him for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand and out of the hand of my fathers how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand 16 And his servants spake yet more against the LORD God and against his servant Hezekiah 17 He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel and to speak against him saying As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand 18 Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall to affright them and to trouble them that they might take the city 19 And they spake against the God of Jerusalem as against the gods of the people of the earth which wēre the work of the hands of man 20 And for this cause Hezekiah the king and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz prayed and cried to heaven 21 ¶ * 2 Kin. 19.35 c. And the LORD sent an angel which cut off all the mighty men of valour and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria so he returned with shame of face to his own land And when he was come into the house of his god they that came forth of his own bowels † Heb. made him fall slew him there with the sword 22 Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria and from the hand of all other and guided them on every side 23 And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem and † Heb. precious things presents to Hezekiah king of Judah so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth 24 ¶ * 2 Kin. 20.1 Isa 38.1 In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death and prayed unto the LORD and he spake unto him and he ‖ Or wrought a miracle for him gave him a signe 25 But Hezekiah rendred not again according to the benefit done unto him for his heart was lifted up therefore there was wrath upon him and upon Judah and Jerusalem 26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for † Heb. the lifting up the pride of his heart both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah 27 ¶ And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour and he made himself treasuries for silver and for gold and for precious stones and for spices and for shields and for all manner of † Heb. instrum●nts of desire pleasant jewels 28 Store-houses also for the increase of corn and wine and oyl and stalls for all manner of beasts and cotes for flocks 29 Moreover he provided him cities and possessions of flocks and
loved her 4 For she is ‖ Or ●uther privy to the mysteries of the knowledge of God and a ‖ Or choos●● lover of his works 5 If riches be a possession to be desired in this life what is richer then wisdom that worketh all things 6 And if * Exod. 31.3 6. prudence work who of all that are is a more cunning workman then she 7 And if a man love righteousness her labours are vertues for she teacheth temperance and prudence justice and fortitude which are such things as men can have nothing more profitable in their life 8 If a man desire much experience she knoweth things of old and conjectureth aright what is to come she knoweth the subtilties of speeches and can expound dark sentences she foreseeth signs and wonders and the events of seasons and times 9 Therefore I purposed to take her to me to live with me knowing that she † Gr. will would be a counsellour of good things and a comfort in cares and grief 10 For her sake I shall have estimation among the multitude and honour with the elders though I be young 11 I shall be found of a quick conceit in judgement and shall be admired in the sight of great men 12 * Job 29.8 9 10. When I hold my tongue they shall bide my leisure and when I speak they shall give good ear unto me if I talk much they shall lay their hands upon their mo●th 13 Moreover by the means of her I shall obtain immortality and leave behinde me an everlasting memorial to them that come after me 14 I shall ‖ Or govern set the people in order and the nations shall be subject unto me 15 Horrible tyrants shall be afraid when they do but hear of me I shall ‖ Or appear be found good among the multitude and valiant in war 16 ‖ Or being entred into mine house After I am come into mine house I will repose my self with her for her conversation hath no bitterness and to live with her hath no sorrow but mirth and joy 17 Now when I considered these things in my self and * Prov. 7.3 pondered them in my heart how that to be allied unto wisdom is immortality 18 And great pleasure it is to have her friendship and in the works of her hands are infinite riches and in the exercise of conference with her prudence and in talking with her a ‖ Or fame good report I went about seeking how to ‖ Or marry her take her to me 19 For I was a witty childe and had a good spirit 20 Yea rather being good I came into a body undefiled 21 Nevertheless when I perceived that I could not otherwise obtain her except God gave her me and that was a point of wisdom also to know whose gift she was I ‖ Or went prayed unto the Lord and besought him and with my whole heart I said CHAP. IX 1 A prayer unto God for his wisdom 6 without which the best man is nothing worth 13 neither can he tell how to please God O God of my fathers and Lord of mercy who hast made all things with thy word 2 And ordained man through thy wisdom that he should * Gen. 1.28 have dominion over the creatures which thou hast made 3 And order the world according to equity and righteousness and execute judgement with an upright heart 4 Give * 1 King 3.9 me wisdom that sitteth by thy throne and reject me not from among thy children 5 For I * Ps 116.16 thy servant and son of thine hand-maid am a feeble person and of a short time and too young for the understanding of judgement and laws 6 For though a man be never so perfect among the children of men yet if thy wisdom be not with him he shall be nothing regarded 7 Thou hast chosen me to be a * 1 Chr. 28.5 2 Chr. 1.9 king of thy people and a judge of thy sons and daughters 8 Thou hast commanded me to build a temple upon thy holy mount and an altar in the city wherein thou dwellest a resemblance of the holy tabernacle which thou hast prepared from the beginning 9 And * Pro. 8.22 Joh. 1.2 3 10. wisdom was with thee which knoweth thy works and was present when thou madest the world and knew what was acceptable in thy sight and right in thy commandments 10 O send her out of thy holy heavens and from the throne of thy glory that being present she may labour with me that I may know what is pleasing unto thee 11 For she knoweth and understandeth all things and she shall lead me soberly in my doings and preserve me ‖ Or by her power or glory in her power 12 So shall my works be acceptable and then shall I judge thy people righteously and be worthy to sit in my fathers seat 13 For * Is 40.13 Rom. 11.34 1 Cor. 2.16 what man is he that can know the counsel of God or who can think what the will of the Lord is 14 For the thoughts of mortal men are ‖ Or fearful miserable and our devices are but uncertain 15 For the corruptible body presseth down the soul and the earthy tabernacle weigheth down the minde that museth upon many things 16 And hardly do we guess aright at things that are upon earth and with labour do we finde the things that are † Gr. at hand before us but the things that are in heaven who hath searched out 17 And thy counsel who hath known except thou give wisdom and send thy holy spirit from above 18 For so the ways of them which lived on the earth were reformed and men were taught the things that are pleasing unto thee and were saved through wisdom CHAP. X. 1 What wisdom did for Adam 4 Noe 5 Abraham 6 Lot and against the five cities 10 for Jacob 12 Joseph 16 Moses 17 and the Israelites SHe preserved the first-formed father of the world that was created alone and brought him out of his fall 2 And * Gen. 1.28 gave him power to rule all things 3 * Gen. 4.8 But when the unrighteous went away from her in his anger he perished also in the sury wherewith he murdered his brother 4 For whose cause the * Gen. 7 2● earth being drowned with the floud wisdom again preserved it and directed the course of the righteous in a piece of wood of small value 5 Moreover * Gen. 11.9 the nations in their wicked conspiracy being confounded she found out the righteous and preserved him blameless unto God and * Gen. 22.10 kept him strong ‖ Or in against his tender compassion toward his son 6 * Gen. 19.16 When the ungodly perished she delivered the righteous man who fled from the fire which fell down upon † Gr. beheld him he said Thou art Simon the son of Jona thou shalt be called Cephas which is by interpretation ‖ Or Peter a stone 43 ¶ The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee and findeth Philip and saith unto him Follow me 44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida the city of Andrew and Peter 45 Philip findeth Nathanael and saith unto him We have found him of whom * Gen. 4● 10 Deut. 18.18 Moses in the law and the * Isa ● 2 prophets did write Jesus of Nazareth the son of Joseph 46 And Nathanael said unto him Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth Philip saith unto him Come and see 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and saith of him Behold an Israelite indeed in whom is no guile 48 Nathanael saith unto him Whence knowest thou me Jesus answered and said unto him Before that Philip called thee when thou wast under the fig-tree I saw thee 49 Nathanael answereth and saith unto him Rabbi thou art the Son of God thou art the king of Israel 50 Jesus answered and said unto him Because I said unto thee I saw thee under the fig-tree beleevest thou thou shalt see greater things then these 51 And he saith unto him Verily verily I say unto you Hereafter you shall see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man CHAP. II. 1 Christ turneth water into wine 12 departeth into Capernaum and to Jerusalem 14 where he purgeth the temple of buyers and sellers 19 He foretelleth his death and resurrection 23 Many beleeved because of his miracles but he would not trust himself with them ANd the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there 2 And both Jesus was called and his disciples to the marriage 3 And when they wanted wine the mother of Jesus saith unto him They have no wine 4 Jesus saith unto her Woman what have I to do with thee mine hour is not yet come 5 His mother saith unto the servants Whatsoever he saith unto you do it 6 And there were set there six water-pots of stone after the manner of the purifying of the Jews containing two or three firkins apiece 7 Jesus saith unto them Fill the water-pots with water And they filled them up to the brim 8 And he saith unto them Draw out now and bear unto the governour of the feast And they bare it 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine and knew not whence it was but the servants which drew the water knew the governour of the feast called the bridegroom 10 And saith unto him Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine and when men have well drunk then that which is worse but thou hast kept the good wine until now 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee and manifested forth his glory and his disciples beleeved on him 12 ¶ After this he went down to Capernaum he and his mother and his brethren his disciples and they continued there not many days 13 ¶ And the Jews pass-over was at hand Jesus went up to Jerusalem 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves and the changers of money sitting 15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords he drove them all out of the temple and the sheep and the oxen and poured out the changers money and overthrew the tables 16 And said unto them that sold doves Take these things hence make not my Fathers house an house of merchandise 17 And his disciples remembred that it was written * Psal 69.9 The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up 18 ¶ Then answered the Jews and said unto him what signe shewest thou unto us seeing that thou doest these things 19 Jesus answered and said unto them * Mat. 26.61 Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up 20 Then said the Jews Fourty and six years was this temple in building and wilt thou rear it up in three days 21 But he spake of the temple of his body 22 When therefore he was risen from the dead his disciples remembred that he had said this unto them and they beleeved the scripture and the word which Jesus had said 23 ¶ Now when he was in Jerusalem at the pass-over in the feast day many beleeved in his name when they saw the miracles which he did 24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them because he knew all men 25 And needed not that any should testifie of man for he knew what was in man CHAP. III. 1 Christ teacheth Nicodemus the necessity of regeneration 14 of faith in his death 16 The great love of God towards the world 18 Contemnation for unbelief 23 The baptism witness and doctrine of John concerning Christ THere was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus a ruler of the Jews 2 The same came to Jesus by night and said unto him Rabbi we know that thou art a teacher come from God for no man can do these miracles that thou doest except God be with him 3 Jesus answered and said unto him Verily verily I say unto thee Except a man be born ‖ Or from above again he cannot see the kingdom of God 4 Nicodemus saith unto him How can a man be born when he is old can he enter the second time into his mothers womb be born 5 Jesus answered Verily verily I say unto thee Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee Ye must be born ‖ Or from above again 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth and thou hearest the sound thereof but canst not tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth so is every one that is born of the Spirit 9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him How can these things be 10 Jesus answered and said unto him Art thou a master of Israel and knowest not these things 11 Verily verily I say unto thee We speak that we do know and testifie that we have seen and ye receive not our witness 12 If I have told you earthly things and ye believe not how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things 13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven but he that came down from heaven even the Son of man which is in heaven 14 ¶ * Numb 21.9 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the Son of man be lifted up 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life 16 ¶ * 1 John 4.9 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life 17
