never_o move_v his_o majesty_n direct_o or_o indirect_o for_o that_o honour_n and_o be_v surprise_v with_o it_o as_o altogether_o unlooked_a for_o when_o his_o majesty_n resolution_n therein_o be_v make_v know_v unto_o he_o nor_o ever_o do_v that_o bishop_n take_v so_o much_o upon_o he_o as_o a_o justiceship_n of_o the_o peace_n or_o meddle_v with_o any_o lay-employment_n save_o what_o the_o law_n and_o custom_n of_o this_o realm_n lay_v upon_o he_o in_o the_o high_a commission_n and_o the_o star-chamber_n while_o those_o court_n be_v in_o be_v and_o continue_v preach_v till_o he_o be_v threescore_o and_o four_o and_o then_o be_v take_v off_o by_o write_v of_o his_o book_n against_o fisher_n the_o jesuit_n be_v than_o not_o able_a at_o those_o year_n to_o continue_v both_o and_o soon_o after_o the_o world_n know_v what_o trouble_n befall_v he_o and_o in_o time_n they_o will_v know_v why_o too_o i_o hope_v beside_o the_o care_n of_o government_n which_o be_v another_o part_n of_o a_o bishop_n office_n and_o a_o necessary_a one_o too_o lay_v heavy_a upon_o he_o in_o these_o factious_a and_o break_a time_n especial_o and_o whatsoever_o this_o lord_n think_v of_o it_o certain_o though_o preach_v may_v be_v more_o necessary_a for_o the_o first_o plant_n of_o a_o church_n yet_o government_n be_v more_o noble_a and_o necessary_a too_o where_o a_o church_n be_v plant_v as_o be_v that_o which_o must_v keep_v preach_v and_o all_o thing_n else_o in_o order_n and_o preach_v as_o it_o be_v now_o use_v have_v as_o much_o need_n to_o be_v keep_v in_o order_n as_o any_o even_o the_o great_a extravagance_n that_o i_o know_v nor_o be_v this_o out_o of_o christ_n commission_n pasce_fw-la oves_fw-la john_n 21._o 15._o for_o the_o feed_n of_o his_o sheep_n for_o a_o shepherd_n must_v guide_v govern_v and_o defend_v his_o sheep_n in_o the_o pasture_n as_o well_o as_o drive_v they_o to_o it_o and_o he_o must_v see_v that_o their_o pasture_n be_v not_o taint_v too_o or_o else_o they_o will_v not_o thrive_v upon_o it_o and_o then_o he_o may_v be_v answerable_a for_o the_o rot_n that_o fall_v among_o they_o the_o rhetoric_n go_v far_a yet_o to_o contend_v for_o sit_v at_o council_n table_n to_o govern_v state_n no_o but_o yet_o to_o assist_v they_o be_v call_v by_o they_o to_o have_v statesman_n instead_o of_o churchman_n no_o but_o do_v the_o duty_n of_o churchman_n to_o mingle_v pious_a counsel_n with_o statesman_n wisdom_n to_o sit_v in_o the_o high_a court_n of_o judicature_n and_o why_o not_o in_o a_o kingdom_n where_o the_o law_n and_o custom_n require_v it_o not_o to_o be_v employ_v in_o make_v law_n for_o civil_a polity_n and_o government_n and_o i_o conceive_v there_o be_v great_a reason_n for_o this_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o england_n and_o great_a since_o the_o reformation_n than_o before_o great_a reason_n because_o the_o bishop_n of_o england_n have_v be_v account_v and_o true_o be_v grave_n and_o experience_v man_n and_o far_o fit_a to_o have_v vote_n in_o parliament_n for_o the_o make_n of_o law_n than_o many_o young_a youth_n which_o be_v in_o either_o house_n and_o because_o it_o be_v most_o fit_a in_o the_o make_n of_o law_n for_o a_o kingdom_n that_o some_o divine_n shall_v have_v vote_n and_o interest_n to_o see_v as_o much_o as_o in_o they_o lie_v that_o no_o law_n pass_v which_o may_v perhaps_o though_o unseen_a to_o other_o entrench_v upon_o religion_n itself_o or_o the_o church_n and_o i_o make_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o these_o and_o the_o like_a consideration_n settle_v it_o so_o in_o england_n where_o bishop_n have_v have_v their_o vote_n in_o parliament_n and_o in_o make_v law_n ever_o since_o there_o be_v parliament_n yea_o or_o any_o thing_n that_o resemble_v they_o in_o this_o kingdom_n and_o for_o my_o part_n be_v i_o able_a to_o give_v no_o reason_n at_o all_o why_o bishop_n shall_v have_v vote_n in_o parliament_n yet_o i_o shall_v in_o all_o humility_n think_v that_o there_o be_v and_o be_v still_o some_o great_a reason_n for_o it_o since_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o state_n have_v successive_o in_o so_o many_o age_n think_v it_o fit_a and_o as_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n they_o shall_v have_v vote_n in_o make_v law_n so_o be_v there_o great_a reason_n for_o it_o since_o the_o reformation_n than_o before_o for_o before_o that_o time_n clergyman_n be_v govern_v by_o the_o church_n canon_n and_o constitution_n and_o the_o common_a law_n of_o england_n have_v but_o little_a power_n over_o they_o then_o in_o the_o year_n 1532._o the_o clergy_n submit_v and_o a_o act_n of_o parliament_n be_v make_v upon_o it_o so_o that_o ever_o since_o the_o clergy_n of_o england_n from_o the_o high_a to_o the_o low_a be_v as_o much_o subject_n to_o the_o temporal_a law_n as_o any_o other_o man_n and_o therefore_o aught_o to_o have_v as_o free_v a_o vote_n and_o consent_n to_o the_o law_n which_o bind_v they_o as_o other_o subject_n have_v yet_o so_o it_o be_v that_o all_o clergyman_n be_v and_o have_v long_a since_o be_v exclude_v from_o be_v member_n of_o the_o house_n of_o commons_o and_o now_o the_o bishop_n and_o their_o vote_n by_o this_o last_o act_n be_v cast_v out_o of_o the_o lord_n house_n by_o which_o it_o be_v at_o this_o day_n come_v to_o pass_v that_o by_o the_o justice_n of_o england_n as_o now_o it_o stand_v no_o clergyman_n have_v a_o consent_n by_o himself_o or_o his_o proxy_n to_o those_o law_n to_o which_o all_o of_o they_o be_v bind_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n before_o i_o pass_v from_o this_o point_n this_o lord_n must_v give_v i_o leave_v to_o put_v he_o in_o mind_n of_o that_o which_o be_v open_o speak_v in_o both_o house_n that_o the_o reason_n why_o there_o be_v such_o a_o clamour_n against_o the_o bishop_n vote_n be_v because_o all_o or_o most_o of_o they_o vote_v for_o the_o king_n so_o that_o the_o potent_a faction_n can_v not_o carry_v what_o they_o please_v especial_o in_o the_o upper_a house_n and_o when_o some_o see_v they_o can_v not_o have_v their_o will_n to_o cast_v out_o their_o vote_n fair_o the_o rabble_n must_v come_v down_o again_o and_o clamour_n against_o their_o vote_n not_o without_o danger_n to_o some_o of_o their_o person_n and_o come_v they_o do_v in_o multitude_n but_o who_o procure_v their_o come_n i_o know_v not_o unless_o it_o be_v this_o lord_n and_o his_o follower_n and_o notwithstanding_o this_o be_v as_o clear_a as_o the_o sun_n and_o be_v open_o speak_v in_o the_o house_n that_o this_o be_v the_o true_a cause_n only_o why_o they_o be_v so_o angry_a with_o the_o bishop_n vote_n yet_o this_o most_o godly_a and_o religious_a lord_n pretend_v here_o a_o far_o better_a cause_n than_o this_o namely_o that_o they_o may_v as_o they_o ought_v careful_o attend_v to_o the_o preach_v of_o the_o word_n and_o not_o be_v distract_v from_o that_o great_a work_n by_o be_v trouble_v with_o these_o worldly_a affair_n and_o i_o make_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o the_o same_o zeal_n will_v carry_v the_o same_o man_n to_o the_o devout_a take_v away_o the_o bishop_n and_o the_o church_n land_n and_o perhaps_o the_o parson_n tithe_n too_o and_o put_v they_o to_o such_o stipend_n as_o they_o shall_v think_v fit_a that_o so_o they_o may_v preach_v the_o gospel_n free_o and_o not_o be_v draw_v away_o with_o these_o worldly_a affair_n from_o the_o principal_a work_n of_o that_o function_n well!_o my_o lord_n must_v give_v i_o leave_v here_o to_o prophesy_v a_o little_a and_o it_o be_v but_o this_o in_o short_a either_o the_o bishop_n shall_v in_o few_o year_n recover_v of_o this_o hoarseness_n and_o have_v their_o honour_n and_o their_o vote_n in_o parliament_n again_o or_o before_o many_o year_n be_v past_a all_o baseness_n barbarity_n and_o confusion_n will_v go_v near_o to_o possess_v both_o this_o church_n and_o kingdom_n but_o this_o lord_n have_v yet_o somewhat_o more_o to_o say_v namely_o that_o if_o they_o shall_v be_v think_v fit_a to_o sit_v in_o such_o place_n and_o will_v undertake_v such_o employment_n they_o must_v not_o be_v there_o as_o ignorant_a man_n but_o must_v be_v know_v in_o business_n of_o state_n and_o understand_v the_o rule_n and_o law_n of_o government_n and_o thereby_o both_o their_o time_n and_o studies_n must_v be_v necessary_o divert_v from_o that_o which_o god_n have_v call_v they_o unto_o and_o this_o sure_o be_v much_o more_o unlawful_a for_o they_o to_o admit_v of_o than_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n reject_v as_o a_o distraction_n unreasonable_a for_o they_o to_o be_v interrupt_v by_o why_o but_o yet_o if_o they_o shall_v be_v think_v fit_a to_o sit_v in_o such_o place_n and_o will_v undertake_v such_o employment_n what_o then_o why_o then_o they_o must_v not_o sit_v there_o as_o ignorant_a man_n
collect_v in_o the_o latter_a edition_n of_o the_o common_a prayer-book_n as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o book_n for_o the_o fast._n and_o this_o be_v do_v according_a to_o the_o course_n of_o the_o church_n which_o ordinary_o name_v none_o in_o the_o prayer_n but_o the_o right_a line_n descend_v yet_o this_o be_v not_o do_v till_o the_o king_n himself_o command_v it_o as_o i_o have_v to_o show_v under_o his_o majesty_n hand_n second_o i_o beseech_v your_o lordship_n to_o consider_v what_o must_v be_v the_o consequence_n here_o the_o queen_n of_o bohemia_n and_o her_o child_n be_v leave_v out_o of_o the_o collect_n therefore_o the_o prelate_n intend_v to_o bring_v in_o popery_n for_o that_o you_o know_v they_o say_v be_v the_o end_n of_o all_o these_o innovation_n now_o if_o this_o be_v the_o end_n and_o the_o consequence_n true_o the_o libeler_n have_v do_v very_o dutiful_o to_o the_o king_n to_o poison_v his_o people_n with_o this_o conceit_n that_o the_o lady_n elizabeth_n and_o her_o child_n will_v keep_v popery_n out_o of_o this_o kingdom_n but_o the_o king_n and_o his_o child_n will_v not_o and_o many_o as_o good_a office_n as_o these_o have_v they_o do_v the_o king_n quite_o through_o these_o libel_n and_o quite_o through_o his_o kingdom_n for_o my_o part_n i_o honour_v the_o queen_n of_o bohemia_n and_o her_o line_n as_o much_o as_o any_o man_n whatsoever_o and_o shall_v be_v as_o ready_a to_o serve_v they_o but_o i_o know_v not_o how_o to_o depart_v from_o my_o allegiance_n as_o i_o doubt_v these_o man_n have_v do_v 7._o the_o seven_o innovation_n 3._o be_v that_o these_o word_n who_o be_v the_o father_n of_o thy_o elect_n and_o of_o their_o seed_n be_v change_v in_o the_o preface_n of_o that_o collect_v which_o be_v for_o the_o prince_n and_o the_o king_n child_n and_o with_o a_o most_o spiteful_a inference_n that_o this_o be_v do_v by_o the_o prelate_n to_o exclude_v the_o king_n child_n out_o of_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect._n and_o they_o call_v it_o a_o intolerable_a impiety_n and_o horrid_a treason_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v first_o that_o this_o alteration_n be_v make_v in_o my_o predecessor_n time_n before_o i_o have_v any_o authority_n to_o meddle_v with_o these_o thing_n far_o than_o i_o be_v call_v upon_o by_o he_o second_o this_o be_v not_o therefore_o to_o lay_v any_o 〈◊〉_d upon_o my_o predecessor_n for_o he_o do_v in_o that_o but_o his_o duty_n for_o his_o majesty_n acknowledge_v it_o be_v do_v by_o his_o special_a direction_n as_o have_v then_o no_o child_n to_o pray_v for_o and_o three_o this_o collect_n can_v not_o be_v very_o old_a for_o it_o have_v no_o be_v in_o the_o common_a prayer_n book_n all_o queen_n elizabeth_n time_n she_o have_v no_o issue_n the_o truth_n be_v it_o be_v make_v at_o the_o come_n in_o of_o king_n james_n and_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v change_v over_o and_o over_o again_o pro_fw-la ratione_fw-la temporum_fw-la as_o time_n and_o person_n vary_v and_o this_o be_v the_o intolerable_a impiety_n and_o horrid_a treason_n they_o charge_v upon_o vs._n in_o this_o method_n the_o innovation_n be_v set_v down_o in_o the_o news_n from_o ipswich_n but_o then_o in_o mr._n burion_n news_n from_o friday-street_n call_v his_o apology_n they_o be_v in_o another_o order_n and_o more_o be_v add_v therefore_o with_o your_o lordship_n leave_n i_o will_v not_o repeal_v any_o of_o these_o but_o go_v on_o to_o the_o rest_n which_o mr._n burton_n add_v 8._o the_o eight_o innovation_n 2._o be_v that_o in_o the_o epistle_n the_o sunday_n before_o easter_n we_o have_v put_v out_o in_o and_o make_v it_o at_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n every_o knee_n shall_v bow_v which_o alteration_n he_o say_v be_v direct_o against_o the_o act_n of_o parliament_n here_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o tell_v you_o it_o be_v at_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n in_o the_o late_a learned_a translation_n make_v in_o king_n james_n his_o time_n about_o which_o many_o learned_a man_n of_o best_a note_n in_o the_o kingdom_n be_v employ_v beside_o some_o prelate_n but_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v first_o it_o be_v true_a the_o common_a prayer_n book_n be_v confirm_v by_o act_n of_o parliament_n and_o so_o all_o thing_n contain_v in_o it_o at_o the_o pass_n of_o that_o act._n but_o i_o hope_v if_o any_o thing_n be_v false_a print_v then_o the_o parliament_n do_v not_o intend_v to_o pass_v those_o slip_n for_o current_n second_o i_o be_o not_o of_o opinion_n that_o if_o one_o word_n be_v put_v in_o for_o another_o so_o they_o bear_v both_o the_o same_o sense_n that_o there_o be_v any_o great_a matter_n do_v against_o the_o act_n of_o parliament_n three_o this_o can_v make_v no_o innovation_n for_o in_o the_o name_n and_o at_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n can_v make_v no_o essential_a difference_n here_o and_o mr._n pryn_n who_o darling_n business_n it_o have_v long_o be_v to_o cry_v down_o the_o honour_n due_a to_o the_o son_n of_o god_n at_o the_o mention_v of_o his_o save_a name_n jesus_n know_v the_o grammar_n rule_v well_o in_o a_o place_n or_o at_o a_o place_n etc._n etc._n four_o if_o there_o be_v any_o error_n in_o the_o change_n of_o in_o into_o at_o i_o do_v here_o solemn_o protest_v to_o you_o i_o know_v not_o how_o it_o come_v for_o authority_n from_o the_o prelate_n the_o printer_n have_v none_o and_o such_o a_o word_n be_v easy_o change_v in_o such_o a_o negligent_a press_n as_o we_o have_v in_o england_n or_o if_o any_o alter_v it_o purposely_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v they_o do_v it_o to_o gratify_v the_o preciser_n sort_n for_o therein_o they_o follow_v the_o geneva_n translation_n and_o print_v at_o geneva_n 1557_o octavo_n where_o the_o word_n be_v at_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n and_o that_o be_v 94_o year_n ago_o and_o therefore_o no_o innovation_n make_v by_o we_o five_o this_o i_o find_v in_o the_o queen_n injunction_n 52._o without_o either_o word_n in_o or_o at._n whensoever_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n shall_v be_v in_o any_o lesson_n sermon_n or_o otherwise_o pronounce_v in_o the_o church_n it_o be_v enjoin_v that_o due_a reverence_n be_v make_v of_o all_o person_n young_a and_o old_a with_o lowliness_n of_o coursy_a and_o uncover_v of_o the_o head_n of_o the_o men-kind_n as_o thereunto_o do_v necessary_o belong_v and_o heretofore_o have_v be_v accustom_v so_o here_o be_v necessity_n lay_v upon_o it_o and_o custom_n for_o it_o and_o both_o express_v by_o authority_n in_o the_o very_a beginning_n of_o the_o reformation_n and_o be_v therefore_o no_o innovation_n now_o 9_o the_o nine_o innovation_n 3._o be_v that_o two_o place_n be_v change_v in_o the_o prayer_n set_v forth_o for_o the_o five_o of_o november_n and_o order_v to_o be_v read_v they_o say_v by_o act_n of_o parliament_n the_o first_o place_n be_v ohange_v thus_o from_o root_n out_o that_o babylomish_a and_o antichristian_a sect_n which_o say_v of_o 〈◊〉_d etc._n etc._n into_o this_o form_n of_o word_n root_n out_o that_o babylonish_n and_o antichristian_a sect_n of_o they_o which_o say_v etc._n etc._n the_o second_o place_n go_v thus_o in_o the_o old_a cut_v off_o these_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n who_o religion_n be_v rebellion_n but_o in_o the_o book_n print_v 1635_o it_o be_v thus_o alter_v cut_v 〈◊〉_d those_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n who_o turn_v religion_n into_o rebellion_n etc._n etc._n to_o this_o i_o say_v first_o it_o be_v a_o notorious_a untruth_n that_o this_o book_n be_v order_v to_o be_v read_v by_o act_n of_o parliament_n the_o act_n of_o parliament_n indeed_o be_v print_v before_o it_o and_o therein_o be_v a_o command_n for_o prayer_n and_o thanksgiving_n every_o five_o of_o november_n but_o not_o one_o word_n or_o syllable_n for_o the_o form_n of_o prayer_n that_o be_v leave_v to_o the_o church_n therefore_o here_o be_v no_o innovation_n against_o that_o act_n of_o parliament_n second_o the_o alteration_n first_o mention_v that_o be_v that_o sect_n or_o that_o sect_n of_o 〈◊〉_d if_o of_o so_o small_a consequence_n as_o it_o be_v not_o worth_a the_o speak_n of_o beside_o if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n of_o moment_n in_o it_o it_o be_v answer_v in_o the_o next_o three_o both_o for_o that_o and_o the_o second_o place_n which_o seem_v of_o more_o moment_n and_o so_o for_o the_o rest_n not_o only_o in_o that_o book_n but_o that_o other_o also_o for_o his_o majesty_n coronation_n his_o majesty_n express_o command_v i_o to_o make_v the_o alteration_n and_o see_v they_o print_v and_o here_o be_v both_o the_o book_n with_o his_o majesty_n warrant_n to_o each_o of_o they_o so_o that_o herein_o i_o conceive_v i_o do_v not_o offend_v unless_o it_o be_v that_o i_o give_v not_o these_o man_n notice_n of_o it_o or_o ask_v they_o leave_v to_o obey_v the_o king_n divers_a other_o question_n to_o be_v make_v and_o answer_v before_o this_o sharp_a lord_n fall_v to_o cut_v as_o first_o what_o branch_n they_o be_v which_o be_v exuberant_a and_o superfluous_a as_o this_o vine_n and_o all_o the_o branch_n of_o it_o in_o his_o church_n without_o his_o usurpation_n of_o their_o office_n and_o while_o he_o use_v a_o bill_n which_o be_v too_o boisterous_a a_o weapon_n for_o a_o vine_n instead_o of_o a_o pruning-hook_n the_o church_n itself_o which_o be_v the_o vine_n which_o bear_v episcopacy_n may_v bleed_v to_o death_n in_o this_o kingdom_n before_o man_n be_v aware_a of_o it_o and_o i_o be_o in_o great_a fear_n if_o thing_n go_v on_o as_o they_o be_v project_v that_o religion_n be_v upon_o take_v its_o leave_n of_o this_o kingdom_n but_o this_o
