A64939 A review and examination of a book bearing the title of The history of the indulgence wherein the lawfulness of the acceptance of the peaceable exercise of the ministry granted by the Acts of the magistrates indulgence is demonstrated, contrary objections answered, and the vindication of such as withdraw from hearing indulged ministers is confuted : to which is added a survey of the mischievous absurdities of the late bond and Sanquhair declaration. so_o though_o the_o purpose_n in_o his_o answer_n be_v good_a yet_o they_o be_v nothing_o to_o the_o purpose_n in_o this_o place_n i_o have_v only_o one_o question_n anent_o somewhat_o he_o say_v in_o the_o end_n of_o his_o four_o answer_v he_o grant_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o it_o that_o the_o magistrate_n may_v indirect_o and_o consequent_o silence_v a_o minister_n for_o a_o civil_a crime_n as_o solomon_n do_v abiathar_n but_o he_o say_v for_o a_o ecclesiastic_a transgression_n the_o magistrate_n can_v indirect_o or_o consequent_o remove_v any_o minister_n from_o the_o exercise_n of_o his_o ministry_n where_o the_o church_n be_v settle_v in_o his_o power_n except_o only_o causative_a by_o command_v the_o church-judicatories_a to_o do_v their_o work_n first_o that_o be_v first_o to_o judge_v for_o in_o prima_fw-la instantia_fw-la he_o may_v not_o do_v it_o or_o corroborative_o by_o back_v the_o service_n of_o the_o church-judicatory_a with_o his_o civil_a sanction_n and_o authority_n now_o my_o question_n be_v suppose_v a_o magistrate_n have_v command_v a_o church-judicatory_a to_o take_v course_n with_o a_o minister_n who_o preach_v heresy_n or_o doctrine_n tend_v to_o idolatry_n or_o preach_v schismatick-doctrine_n and_o rend_v the_o church_n and_o yet_o the_o church-judicatory_a through_o ignorance_n or_o be_v themselves_o taint_v or_o through_o want_n of_o zeal_n take_v no_o effectual_a course_n to_o remedy_v these_o evil_n this_o be_v a_o case_n supposable_a for_o we_o see_v the_o church-judicatory_a of_o pergamus_n suffer_v they_o that_o hold_v the_o doctrine_n of_o balaam_n and_o that_o hold_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o nicclatians_n and_o the_o church-judicatory_a of_o thyatria_n suffer_v the_o woman_n jezabel_n that_o call_v herself_o a_o prophetess_n to_o teach_v and_o seduce_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n to_o commit_v fornication_n and_o to_o eat_v thing_n sacrifice_v to_o idol_n in_o this_o case_n shall_v the_o magistrate_n do_v no_o more_o but_o command_v the_o church-judicatory_a to_o their_o work_n he_o have_v do_v that_o and_o yet_o the_o judicatory_a do_v nothing_o or_o nothing_o to_o purpose_n and_o the_o church_n be_v like_a to_o be_v undo_v through_o these_o doctrine_n that_o fret_v like_o a_o gangreen_n and_o the_o other_o member_n of_o his_o distinction_n make_v no_o help_n for_o the_o church-judicatory_a i_o suppose_v pass_v no_o right_a sentence_n which_o the_o magistrate_n may_v corroborate_v shall_v he_o who_o be_v god_n vicegerent_n suffer_v the_o people_n of_o god_n and_o his_o subject_n to_o be_v poison_v with_o damnable_a doctrine_n may_v he_o do_v nothing_o indirect_o to_o restrain_v these_o heretic_n from_o preach_v such_o damnable_a doctrine_n and_o therefore_o it_o seem_v that_o though_o the_o magistrate_n can_v depose_v a_o heretic_n that_o be_v a_o minister_n yet_o he_o may_v do_v more_o to_o restrain_v a_o heritick_n from_o destroy_v the_o people_n of_o god_n than_o be_v second_o objection_n that_o the_o magistrate_n may_v hinder_v a_o heretic_n from_o preach_v heresy_n either_o public_o or_o from_o house_n to_o house_n as_o for_o his_o second_o objection_n if_o he_o have_v form_v it_o thus_o when_o the_o magistrate_n grant_v the_o peaceable_a public_a exercise_n of_o the_o ministry_n minister_n shall_v thankful_o accept_v of_o this_o grant_n he_o will_v have_v have_v no_o answer_n but_o he_o keep_v out_o peaceable_a out_o of_o the_o objection_n and_o then_o he_o answer_v that_o the_o magistrate_n shall_v not_o discharge_v the_o public_a exercise_n of_o the_o ministry_n well_o but_o what_o be_v that_o to_o the_o purpose_n will_v he_o infer_v from_o thence_o that_o therefore_o he_o shall_v not_o allow_v to_o minister_n the_o public_a peaceable_a exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n the_o three_o objection_n he_o propon_v thus_o our_o second_o book_n of_o discipline_n grant_v that_o magistrate_n may_v place_v minister_n when_o the_o kirk_n be_v corrupt_v and_o all_o thing_n out_o of_o order_n and_o so_o it_o be_v now_o with_o we_o the_o argument_n may_v be_v frame_v thus_o if_o the_o magistrate_n when_o the_o church_n be_v corrupt_v and_o all_o thing_n out_o of_o order_n may_v place_v minister_n
than_o the_o magistrate_n may_v appoint_v permit_v allow_v minister_n to_o preach_v in_o such_o and_o such_o kirk_n for_o if_o the_o magistrate_n may_v do_v what_o be_v more_o than_o they_o may_v do_v what_o be_v less_o in_o the_o corrupt_a state_n of_o the_o church_n but_o the_o state_n of_o the_o church_n be_v such_o and_o therefore_o if_o the_o magistrate_n may_v in_o this_o case_n place_n he_o propon_v it_o but_o so_o it_o be_v now_o with_o we_o he_o answer_v that_o our_o church_n be_v a_o constitute_v and_o well-ordered_a church_n but_o that_o now_o confusion_n be_v come_v and_o so_o in_o effect_n he_o yield_v all_o but_o i_o remember_v he_o speak_v to_o this_o before_o what_o he_o say_v of_o the_o magistrate_n bring_v on_o this_o confusion_n be_v no_o evasion_n for_o the_o book_n of_o discipline_n do_v speak_v general_o of_o a_o church_n corrupt_v whatever_o way_n it_o have_v be_v corrupt_v whether_o by_o magistrate_n or_o minister_n that_o be_v neither_o up_z nor_o down_o a_o magistrate_n that_o have_v disorder_v the_o church_n be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o oblige_v to_o right_v those_o disorder_n and_o if_o a_o magistrate_n have_v disorder_v the_o church_n by_o thrust_v
