particular_a christian_n in_o faith_n and_o practice_n but_o yet_o so_o as_o to_o be_v give_v also_o for_o the_o edify_n of_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n till_o we_o come_v in_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o faith_n to_o a_o perfect_a man._n so_o that_o when_o these_o officer_n seek_v to_o edify_v particular_a believer_n they_o must_v be_v sure_a at_o the_o same_o time_n to_o secure_v another_o end_n i._n e._n the_o edification_n of_o the_o body_n and_o unity_n of_o the_o church_n they_o be_v give_v as_o member_n which_o show_v evident_o they_o must_v make_v up_o but_o one_o body_n and_o keep_v unity_n with_o the_o other_o part_n nay_o they_o be_v give_v as_o joint_n which_o be_v the_o very_a ligament_n of_o union_n and_o compactness_n these_o officer_n be_v give_v as_o member_n of_o the_o church_n and_o that_o show_v they_o must_v make_v up_o one_o body_n and_o keep_v unity_n with_o the_o other_o part_n for_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o body_n be_v to_o be_v the_o care_n of_o all_o the_o member_n especial_o of_o those_o which_o excel_v in_o gift_n or_o be_v high_a in_o dignity_n and_o office_n thus_o it_o be_v as_o the_o apostle_n observe_v 1_o cor._n 12._o in_o the_o natural_a body_n it_o have_v several_a member_n very_o different_a in_o endowment_n and_o destine_v some_o to_o more_o some_z to_z less_o honourable_a office_n but_o because_o of_o this_o difference_n the_o more_o able_a and_o honourable_a member_n do_v not_o set_v up_o for_o themselves_o and_o seek_v a_o separate_a profit_n or_o applause_n or_o make_v a_o schism_n and_o divide_v from_o other_o though_o there_o be_v many_o member_n say_v he_o they_o all_o make_v up_o but_o one_o body_n v_o 20._o and_o the_o eye_n though_o a_o more_o honourable_a member_n can_v separate_v interest_n or_o say_v to_o the_o hand_n though_o less_o honourable_a i_o have_v no_o need_n of_o thou_o nor_o again_o the_o head_n to_o the_o foot_n i_o have_v no_o need_n of_o you_o v_o 21._o and_o none_o seek_v only_o themselves_o which_o will_v cause_v division_n but_o they_o have_v all_o the_o same_o care_n one_o for_o another_o if_o one_o suffer_v all_o the_o rest_n suffer_v or_o if_o one_o be_v honour_v all_o the_o rest_n rejoice_v with_o it_o that_o there_o be_v no_o schism_n in_o the_o body_n v_o 25_o 26._o and_o like_v to_o this_o in_o natural_a body_n be_v the_o difference_n of_o officer_n in_o the_o church_n though_o that_o have_v variety_n of_o gift_n as_o wisdom_n knowledge_n prophecy_n faith_n miracle_n etc._n etc._n v._n 8_o 9_o 10._o and_o variety_n of_o officer_n and_o minister_n some_o gift_v more_o some_o less_o some_o high_a some_o low_a in_o authority_n than_o other_o for_o there_o be_v difference_n of_o administration_n v_o 5_o god_n have_v set_v first_o apostles_n secondary_o prophet_n three_o teacher_n after_o that_o miracle_n and_o gift_n of_o healing_n i._n e._n person_n endow_v with_o they_o help_v i._n e._n some_o distribute_v charity_n as_o deacon_n or_o attend_v on_o impotent_a and_o orphan_n government_n as_o bishop_n and_o presbyter_n diversity_n of_o tongue_n v_o 28._o though_o i_o say_v in_o the_o church_n there_o be_v this_o difference_n both_o of_o gift_n and_o ministry_n yet_o must_v not_o those_o different_o gift_v or_o authorize_v officer_n draw_v different_a way_n and_o form_n divide_v party_n but_o all_o aim_n at_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o whole_a body_n as_o its_o natural_a member_n as_o all_o the_o member_n in_o the_o body_n natural_a be_v one_o body_n so_o also_o be_v christ_n the_o different_a ministery_n and_o member_n make_v but_o one_o body_n in_o he_o likewise_o v_o 12_o and_o the_o several_a ministery_n as_o apostle_n prophet_n etc._n etc._n be_v all_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n say_v he_o and_o member_n in_o particular_a which_o therefore_o must_v cement_v together_o and_o not_o fall_v off_o and_o divide_v from_o each_o other_o v_o 27_o 28._o and_o as_o we_o have_v many_o member_n in_o one_o body_n natural_a and_o yet_o all_o these_o member_n though_o the_o body_n be_v but_o one_o have_v not_o one_o and_o the_o same_o office_n more_o than_o these_o member_n of_o the_o church_n so_o we_o be_v many_o member_n and_o officer_n the_o variety_n whereof_o be_v describe_v v_o 6_o 7_o 8._o be_v still_o to_o be_v but_o one_o body_n in_o christ_n and_o every_o one_o member_n one_o of_o another_o the_o difference_n in_o office_n give_v no_o more_o liberty_n to_o divide_v the_o church_n than_o the_o same_o difference_n in_o the_o natural_a member_n do_v to_o divide_v the_o natural_a body_n rom._n 12._o 4_o 5._o nay_o these_o officer_n be_v not_o set_v only_o as_o member_n which_o as_o we_o have_v see_v be_v enough_o to_o prevent_v schism_n but_o they_o be_v set_v in_o the_o church_n as_o joint_n which_o be_v to_o compact_v all_o the_o other_o part_n and_o be_v the_o very_a bond_n and_o ligament_n of_o union_n the_o whole_a body_n say_v st._n paul_n fit_o join_v together_o and_o compact_v by_o that_o which_o every_o joint_a supply_n eph._n 4._o 16._o every_o joint_n i._n e._n every_o officer_n and_o church-governour_n for_o in_o they_o the_o other_o member_n be_v joint_v and_o unite_v to_o one_o another_o and_o since_o they_o be_v joint_n they_o must_v fasten_v and_o unite_v all_o the_o other_o part_n together_o not_o tear_v they_o from_o each_o other_o what_o they_o supply_v say_v the_o apostle_n must_v compact_v the_o body_n and_o therefore_o must_v in_o no_o wise_a divide_v it_o and_o of_o one_o make_v many_o so_o that_o as_o for_o the_o extraordinary_a ability_n and_o edify_a power_n of_o some_o pastor_n and_o teacher_n it_o must_v never_o occasion_v or_o head_n schism_n and_o division_n but_o must_v be_v so_o apply_v by_o they_o and_o so_o seek_v to_o by_o other_o that_o whilst_o it_o labour_v to_o build_v up_o faith_n and_o good_a life_n in_o particular_a person_n at_o the_o same_o time_n it_o build_v up_o unity_n in_o the_o church_n and_o body_n of_o christ._n himself_o by_o separation_n from_o this_o it_o may_v plain_o appear_v how_o unwarrantable_o our_o dissent_v brethren_n act_v in_o separate_v from_o we_o who_o they_o confess_v to_o be_v a_o sound_n be_v temper_n that_o all_o man_n ought_v to_o put_v on_o whilst_o other_o be_v speak_v to_o they_o in_o god_n name_n and_o deliver_v his_o message_n and_o after_o they_o have_v hear_v do_v they_o give_v themselves_o the_o trouble_n to_o make_v what_o they_o hear_v their_o own_o and_o apt_a to_o stick_v by_o they_o and_o affect_v they_o by_o meditate_v upon_o it_o and_o apply_v it_o to_o themselves_o and_o so_o bring_v it_o close_o to_o their_o own_o conscience_n without_o this_o honesty_n and_o impartiality_n and_o godly_a care_n in_o hear_v they_o will_v not_o be_v edify_v if_o the_o holy_a ghost_n himself_o be_v to_o preach_v to_o they_o and_o when_o christ_n himself_o be_v upon_o earth_n his_o sermon_n be_v unprofitable_a and_o do_v not_o edify_v the_o generality_n of_o his_o hearer_n for_o the_o want_n of_o they_o and_o if_o they_o be_v in_o the_o same_o fault_n in_o hear_v we_o no_o wonder_n they_o be_v little_o edify_v by_o our_o preach_v and_o after_o all_o to_o their_o opinion_n or_o insist_o most_o on_o some_o thing_n and_o deliver_v they_o in_o such_o form_n of_o speech_n as_o most_o please_v they_o or_o be_v full_a only_a of_o the_o glorious_a privilege_n of_o the_o saint_n which_o though_o fit_a to_o be_v treat_v of_o sometime_o must_v not_o engross_v all_o our_o discourse_n or_o be_v more_o insist_v on_o than_o those_o duty_n which_o be_v to_o secure_v they_o to_o we_o and_o give_v comfortable_a intimation_n that_o they_o be_v all_o they_o which_o may_v feast_v their_o fancy_n with_o the_o delightful_a thought_n of_o their_o being_n more_o precious_a and_o dear_a to_o god_n than_o other_o do_v they_o judge_v it_o to_o be_v edify_v i_o say_v only_o from_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o or_o as_o it_o answer_v the_o forego_v description_n of_o edification_n do_v they_o hear_v discourse_n of_o weighty_a matter_n or_o more_o plain_a and_o intelligible_a account_n less_o darken_v with_o phrase_n and_o metaphor_n or_o strong_a reason_n for_o any_o doctrine_n or_o clear_a explication_n of_o any_o duty_n or_o more_o perspicuous_a and_o careful_a state_n of_o any_o case_n or_o wise_a direction_n for_o any_o point_n of_o practice_n or_o more_o forcible_a motive_n to_o engage_v to_o the_o use_n of_o they_o or_o more_o satisfactory_a solution_n of_o any_o important_a question_n and_o doubt_n of_o conscience_n in_o the_o separate_a meeting_n than_o they_o may_v hear_v in_o the_o parish_n church_n if_o they_o try_v the_o point_n by_o these_o measure_n it_o be_v like_a they_o will_v not_o be_v so_o forward_o to_o pronounce_v against_o we_o nor_o talk_v so_o much_o of_o the_o edification_n of_o their_o own_o preacher_n and_o the_o want_n of_o it_o in_o we_o 2._o if_o as_o they_o suppose_v their_o sermon_n be_v jew_n to_o their_o ministry_n to_o expect_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n in_o their_o due_a attendance_n upon_o it_o v_o 2_o 3._o the_o priest_n in_o those_o day_n by_o the_o scripture-account_n of_o they_o be_v far_o from_o the_o holy_a man_n so_o that_o if_o the_o holiness_n of_o he_o that_o bring_v it_o be_v any_o recommendation_n of_o the_o gift_n they_o be_v not_o in_o themselves_o the_o fit_a to_o present_v a_o offer_n but_o yet_o because_o they_o be_v the_o mean_n of_o god_n appoint_v when_o the_o leper_n be_v cleanse_v and_o be_v to_o return_v god_n a_o oblation_n christ_n order_v he_o to_o carry_v it_o to_o the_o priest_n because_o through_o his_o hand_n god_n will_v accept_v it_o of_o he_o mat._n 8._o 4._o thus_o be_v god_n blessing_n which_o be_v the_o great_a cause_n of_o be_v not_o so_o like_a to_o profit_v we_o but_o 3._o if_o they_o can_v edify_v more_o by_o they_o yet_o be_v it_o in_o no_o wise_a lawful_a thus_o to_o break_v the_o unity_n and_o peace_n of_o the_o viz._n any_o increase_n in_o private_a virtue_n or_o in_o public_a settlement_n and_o peace_n so_o that_o then_o any_o man_n edify_v in_o religion_n when_o he_o be_v better_v in_o any_o point_n of_o faith_n or_o manner_n or_o make_v more_o comply_v with_o innocent_a public_a constitution_n and_o a_o more_o peaceable_a member_n of_o the_o church_n and_o have_v thus_o show_v what_o it_o imply_v i_o as_o the_o great_a point_n whereat_o they_o be_v to_o aim_v on_o all_o sort_n of_o christian_n and_o here_o have_v i_o time_n i_o shall_v urge_v all_o christian_n to_o lay_v out_o themselves_o in_o improve_n useful_a knowledge_n and_o obedient_a practice_n and_o peaceable_a inclination_n to_o stir_v up_o and_o cherish_v in_o themselves_o devout_a affection_n and_o daily_o renew_v and_o universal_a holiness_n with_o your_o utmosh_fw-mi skill_n and_o diligence_n that_o you_o will_v study_v to_o be_v plain_a and_o useful_a in_o all_o your_o sermon_n prudent_o bold_a and_o impartial_a in_o reproof_n warn_v man_n against_o all_o even_o their_o belove_a vice_n with_o such_o freedom_n as_o may_v keep_v their_o conscience_n awake_v and_o yet_o with_o such_o show_n of_o tenderness_n and_o prudent_a time_v of_o reproof_n as_o may_v not_o tempt_v they_o to_o fly_v out_o from_o we_o endeavour_v to_o reclaim_v they_o from_o schism_n which_o be_v most_o mischievous_a to_o the_o immorality_n which_o without_o particular_a repentance_n and_o amendment_n be_v most_o sure_o mischievous_a to_o their_o own_o soul_n which_o have_v no_o plea_n of_o pardonable_a ignorance_n and_o involuntariness_n and_o for_o which_o there_o be_v no_o excuse_n at_o all_o in_o all_o which_o by_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n i_o will_v beseech_v you_o to_o show_v all_o wisdom_n and_o diligence_n and_o patience_n and_o unwearied_a perseverence_n and_o compassionate_a tenderness_n and_o love_n for_o soul_n i_o will_v in_o all_o christian_a love_n beseech_v our_o dissent_v brethren_n and_o be_v instant_a with_o they_o since_o it_o so_o near_o concern_v both_o the_o church_n and_o they_o that_o they_o will_v seek_v no_o long_o to_o build_v up_o only_o themselves_o but_o to_o edify_v the_o church_n of_o christ_n which_o they_o certain_o pull_v down_o by_o their_o separation_n in_o very_a deed_n they_o may_v have_v great_a mean_n of_o private_a edification_n in_o our_o church_n and_o need_v not_o seek_v for_o better_a in_o any_o other_o place_n they_o will_v edify_v sufficient_o by_o our_o sermon_n as_o i_o have_v note_v if_o they_o bring_v along_o with_o they_o prepare_a mind_n and_o and_o without_o they_o the_o jew_n can_v not_o edify_v by_o the_o sermon_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n and_o if_o they_o can_v edify_v by_o the_o church_n prayer_n too_o the_o fault_n i_o be_o sure_a be_v not_o in_o the_o prayer_n but_o in_o themselves_o for_o consider_v brethren_n the_o prayer_n we_o use_v be_v not_o to_o give_v affection_n to_o we_o but_o to_o express_v those_o we_o have_v so_o that_o when_o we_o come_v to_o pray_v we_o must_v bring_v they_o along_o with_o we_o and_o if_o we_o come_v with_o a_o awful_a sense_n of_o god_n in_o our_o mind_n with_o serious_a and_o good_a purpose_n and_o devout_a affection_n we_o need_v no_o better_a help_n to_o express_v they_o than_o the_o church_n service_n for_o therein_o be_v sound_a suitable_a and_o well-composed_a prayer_n which_o extend_v to_o all_o necessity_n beg_v all_o needful_a grace_n and_o pray_v particular_o both_o against_o sin_n and_o calamity_n and_o request_v outward_a blessing_n and_o give_v thanks_o for_o receipt_n of_o mercy_n and_o intercede_v for_o all_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o person_n and_o suit_v to_o the_o great_a period_n and_o state_n of_o life_n in_o all_o which_o they_o pitch_v upon_o the_o most_o pertinent_a and_o proper_a thing_n and_o express_v they_o in_o grave_a plain_a and_o significant_a language_n and_o be_v intermix_v with_o response_n to_o fix_v attention_n and_o call_v back_o wander_a thought_n and_o be_v parcele_v into_o collect_v to_o give_v breath_n and_o not_o weary_v we_o out_o with_o a_o uninterrupted_a continuance_n of_o intense_a affection_n so_o that_o if_o we_o bring_v with_o we_o a_o heart_n to_o desire_v these_o thing_n here_o we_o have_v prayer_n to_o suggest_v and_o express_v our_o desire_n of_o they_o yea_o such_o as_o whilst_o they_o do_v express_v be_v great_o fit_v to_o increase_v they_o thus_o fit_a be_v they_o to_o edify_v in_o themselves_o and_o this_o great_a number_n of_o true_o pious_a and_o devout_a soul_n have_v find_v and_o from_o their_o own_o experience_n can_v testify_v concern_v they_o and_o now_o if_o any_o shall_v still_o charge_v such_o excellent_a prayer_n as_o unedifying_a where_o lie_v the_o
