unity_n sake_n be_v any_o way_n a_o give_v up_o of_o our_o christian_a liberty_n until_o i_o see_v some_o good_a proof_n for_o it_o either_o express_o contain_v in_o or_o evident_o consequent_a from_o very_a lame_a and_o imperfect_a answer_n three_o to_o impose_v any_o indifferent_a thing_n as_o condition_n of_o communion_n if_o it_o be_v do_v either_o with_o a_o express_a declaration_n or_o any_o evident_a implication_n or_o supposition_n that_o no_o communion_n can_v lawful_o be_v keep_v up_o in_o or_o hold_v with_o any_o church_n whatsoever_o without_o the_o use_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v so_o impose_v this_o indeed_o will_v be_v to_o impose_v such_o thing_n as_o essential_a and_o necessary_a part_n of_o worship_n and_o religion_n and_o consequent_o on_o the_o imposer_n part_n a_o unlawful_a attempt_n upon_o christian_a liberty_n but_o as_o i_o have_v show_v that_o this_o be_v none_o of_o our_o church_n case_n who_o express_o own_v such_o her_o constitution_n to_o be_v alterable_a as_o just_a cause_n shall_v require_v and_o neither_o reject_v the_o communion_n nor_o condemn_v the_o practice_n of_o any_o other_o church_n which_o differ_v from_o she_o in_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o so_o if_o the_o matter_n be_v even_o thus_o itself_o yet_o if_o any_o private_a christian_n shall_v for_o peace_n and_o unity_n so_o far_o comply_v with_o the_o church_n as_o to_o submit_v to_o what_o she_o have_v require_v and_o practice_v what_o she_o have_v thus_o prescribe_v but_o yet_o with_o a_o express_a declaration_n and_o open_a protestation_n that_o he_o do_v this_o not_o out_o of_o any_o necessity_n which_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v in_o the_o thing_n themselves_o which_o he_o still_o assert_v to_o be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n indifferent_a but_o only_o for_o peace_n sake_n and_o as_o far_o as_o in_o he_o lay_v to_o prevent_v all_o schism_n or_o division_n i_o can_v see_v how_o such_o a_o man_n as_o this_o can_v be_v condemn_v as_o therein_o guilty_a of_o any_o sin_n or_o any_o way_n a_o betrayer_n of_o his_o christian_a liberty_n and_o if_o in_o this_o my_o opinion_n i_o be_o perhaps_o mistake_v i_o shall_v be_v very_o glad_a to_o be_v better_o worship_n of_o god_n can_v possible_o be_v perform_v suppose_v then_o that_o the_o church_n appoint_v and_o determine_v some_o indifferent_a thing_n as_o circumstance_n in_o god_n worship_n and_o require_v they_o to_o be_v observe_v by_o all_o her_o member_n and_o yet_o that_o some_o be_v so_o obstinate_a and_o refractory_a as_o that_o they_o will_v not_o submit_v to_o her_o authority_n in_o these_o thing_n what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v in_o such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o must_v every_o particular_a mâ—n_z be_v leave_v to_o his_o liberty_n to_o introduce_v what_o circumstance_n he_o please_v into_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n according_a to_o his_o own_o fancy_n or_o inclination_n this_o will_v be_v the_o direct_a way_n to_o confound_v that_o order_n and_o destroy_v that_o decency_n for_o which_o the_o apostle_n particular_o provide_v 1_o cor._n 14._o 40_o as_o i_o have_v say_v in_o my_o address_n and_o to_o exclude_v the_o directory_n as_o well_o as_o the_o liturgy_n or_o must_v the_o church_n from_o time_n to_o time_n alter_v and_o new_a model_n her_o constitution_n concern_v the_o circumstance_n of_o god_n worship_n until_o matter_n be_v so_o settle_v as_o that_o every_o one_o may_v be_v please_v and_o full_o satisfy_v this_o i_o confess_v be_v a_o most_o excellent_a way_n if_o the_o thing_n be_v at_o all_o practicable_a or_o possible_a to_o be_v perform_v but_o when_o it_o be_v consider_v that_o in_o such_o matter_n as_o relate_v to_o order_n and_o decency_n only_o we_o have_v not_o always_o a_o fix_a and_o certain_a rule_n as_o to_o particular_n but_o man_n have_v different_a opinion_n of_o such_o thing_n according_a to_o the_o difference_n of_o their_o custom_n temper_n and_o education_n i_o believe_v it_o will_v be_v find_v a_o very_a hard_a and_o perhaps_o a_o impossible_a thing_n so_o to_o frame_v all_o the_o circumstance_n of_o divine_a worship_n as_o that_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n how_o different_a soever_o in_o their_o temper_n or_o education_n shall_v be_v well_o please_v and_o satisfy_v with_o they_o and_o if_o this_o be_v not_o to_o be_v do_v then_o it_o may_v be_v if_o any_o church_n shall_v go_v about_o to_o make_v alteration_n in_o such_o thing_n to_o please_v and_o gratify_v some_o people_n they_o may_v hereby_o displease_v and_o disgust_v many_o other_o and_o so_o in_o the_o end_n do_v more_o hurt_n than_o good_a by_o such_o alteration_n what_o then_o remain_v but_o that_o every_o church_n in_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o must_v act_v according_a to_o the_o best_a of_o her_o prudence_n and_o if_o man_n will_v still_o be_v refractory_a and_o not_o submit_v to_o such_o constitution_n as_o lawful_a authority_n enjoin_v and_o be_v no_o way_n contrary_a to_o the_o law_n or_o word_n of_o god_n i_o will_v glad_o know_v what_o other_o course_n be_v at_o last_o to_o be_v take_v with_o they_o but_o to_o exclude_v they_o from_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o society_n who_o thus_o obstinate_o refuse_v to_o conform_v to_o the_o rule_n and_o order_n of_o it_o and_o if_o our_o author_n judge_v this_o to_o be_v a_o infringement_n of_o christian_a liberty_n i_o desire_v he_o will_v not_o only_o say_v it_o but_o also_o clear_o and_o solid_o prove_v it_o but_o christ_n have_v free_v we_o from_o all_o part_n and_o parcel_n of_o worship_n which_o be_v not_o of_o his_o own_o institution_n he_o have_v so_o but_o what_o be_v this_o to_o those_o ceremony_n which_o i_o have_v plain_o prove_v to_o be_v no_o part_n or_o parcel_n but_o only_a circumstance_n of_o worship_n he_o have_v free_v we_o also_o from_o all_o condition_n of_o communion_n but_o those_o of_o his_o own_o prescribe_v very_o right_n but_o then_o we_o must_v remember_v that_o one_o condition_n of_o communion_n which_o christ_n prescribe_v unto_o we_o be_v to_o obey_v they_o that_o have_v the_o rule_n over_o we_o and_o submit_v ourselves_o heb._n 13._o 17._o to_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o high_a power_n rom._n 13._o 1._o and_o to_o submit_v ourselves_o to_o every_o ordinance_n of_o man_n for_o the_o lord_n sake_n 1_o pet._n 2._o 13._o and_o whosoever_o obstinate_o refuse_v to_o perform_v this_o condition_n be_v just_o to_o be_v exclude_v from_o be_v term_v needless_a thing_n but_o if_o i_o shall_v judge_v they_o to_o be_v altogether_o needless_a yet_o as_o long_o as_o they_o be_v innocent_a this_o will_v be_v no_o good_a reason_n why_o i_o shall_v refuse_v obedience_n to_o they_o as_o well_o because_o i_o have_v no_o warrant_n from_o god_n word_n for_o so_o do_v as_o that_o the_o government_n in_o their_o wisdom_n may_v have_v very_o good_a reason_n for_o command_v such_o thing_n although_o it_o may_v be_v i_o be_o not_o able_a thorough_o to_o comprehend_v it_o and_o that_o such_o a_o modest_a compliance_n as_o this_o shall_v be_v in_o that_o by_o withdraw_a and_o separate_n himself_o from_o the_o gentile_n for_o fear_v of_o they_o which_o be_v of_o the_o circumcision_n he_o lay_v a_o stumble_a block_n before_o the_o gentile_n and_o though_o not_o by_o his_o doctrine_n yet_o by_o his_o example_n seem_v to_o put_v a_o sort_n of_o compulsion_n upon_o they_o to_o live_v as_o do_v the_o jew_n to_o which_o no_o law_n either_o from_o either_o of_o those_o place_n and_o whereas_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o the_o synod_n of_o jerusilem_fw-la act_n 15_o think_v fit_a to_o impose_v nothing_o but_o necessary_a thing_n verse_n 28._o address_n be_v that_o since_o the_o communion_n of_o our_o church_n be_v lawful_a and_o innocent_a in_o itâ—â—â—_n â—â—â—_z which_o i_o hope_v i_o have_v now_o abundant_o prove_v against_o all_o that_o our_o author_n â—â—s_o object_v to_o the_o contrary_a there_o can_v be_v any_o just_a reason_n why_o the_o noncâ—â—_n sormist_n shall_v refuse_v to_o join_v with_o we_o in_o it_o and_o although_o our_o author_n nibble_v a_o little_a aâ—_n some_o of_o those_o thing_n which_o i_o have_v touch_v under_o this_o head_n of_o my_o discourse_n yet_o since_o every_o thing_n which_o he_o alter_v the_o state_n of_o the_o case_n and_o the_o contrary_a whereto_o i_o have_v hitherto_o be_v assert_v against_o all_o his_o weak_a and_o trifle_a objection_n i_o will_v not_o give_v either_o doctrine_n but_o with_o the_o nonconformist_n who_o do_v not_o deny_v what_o i_o have_v hitherto_o assert_v as_o the_o other_o do_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o give_v other_o reason_n altogether_o for_o their_o separation_n from_o we_o and_o therefore_o why_o our_o author_n will_v have_v i_o stand_v to_o prove_v these_o point_n before_o they_o be_v gainsay_v i_o know_v not_o except_o it_o may_v be_v to_o divert_v the_o reader_n from_o attend_v unto_o that_o which_o be_v the_o knot_n and_o difficulty_n of_o the_o controversy_n if_o any_o real_a difficulty_n at_o all_o there_o be_v in_o so_o very_o plain_a and_o evident_a a_o case_n where_o a_o assertion_n be_v lay_v down_o in_o any_o controversy_n there_o can_v be_v but_o two_o way_n of_o return_v a_o answer_n to_o it_o viz._n either_o first_o to_o deny_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o or_o second_o to_o show_v that_o though_o it_o may_v be_v true_a yet_o be_v it_o impertinent_a to_o the_o purpose_n for_o which_o it_o be_v allege_v the_o former_a of_o these_o our_o author_n i_o suppose_v know_v he_o can_v do_v in_o relation_n to_o the_o abovementioned_a proposition_n although_o according_a to_o his_o way_n he_o seem_v to_o suggest_v something_o like_o it_o by_o urge_v i_o to_o undertake_v the_o proof_n of_o it_o for_o the_o only_a reason_n why_o a_o man_n shall_v produce_v his_o argument_n to_o prove_v a_o thing_n be_v because_o it_o may_v be_v deny_v or_o doubt_v of_o but_o in_o order_n to_o the_o latter_a without_o distinguish_v between_o the_o case_n of_o our_o church_n and_o that_o of_o rome_n he_o produce_v pag._n 99_o a_o passage_n of_o the_o learned_a chillingworth_n which_o though_o level_v by_o its_o author_n only_o against_o the_o roman_a church_n yet_o he_o set_v down_o as_o equal_o applicable_a against_o that_o church_n also_o of_o which_o mr._n chillingworth_n himself_o be_v a_o member_n and_o that_o without_o take_v any_o care_n to_o caution_n his_o own_o party_n against_o a_o unjust_a and_o false_a opinion_n that_o some_o of_o they_o have_v seem_v to_o be_v incline_v to_o â—s_n if_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o the_o establish_v church_n be_v in_o a_o manner_n equal_o culpable_a the_o substance_n of_o what_o he_o recite_v out_o of_o mr._n chillinwarth_n be_v comprise_v in_o the_o first_o word_n of_o the_o quotation_n itself_o all_o say_v he_o that_o we_o forsake_v in_o you_o be_v the_o belief_n profession_n and_o practice_n of_o your_o error_n etc._n etc._n let_v but_o these_o error_n be_v take_v away_o and_o in_o all_o the_o rest_n we_o shall_v agree_v very_o well_o in_o answer_v whereunto_o i_o grant_v with_o that_o learned_a man_n in_o what_o follow_v that_o to_o believe_v a_o error_n know_v it_o to_o be_v a_o error_n be_v absolute_o impossible_a and_o for_o a_o man_n to_o profess_v what_o he_o do_v not_o believe_v be_v hypocritical_a and_o sinful_a and_o therefore_o ever_o to_o be_v avoid_v but_o although_o this_o bear_v close_o upon_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n which_o require_v the_o belief_n and_o profession_n of_o divers_a thing_n which_o from_o plain_a scripture_n and_o reason_n we_o abundant_o prove_v to_o be_v false_a yet_o be_v it_o altogether_o wide_a from_o our_o case_n except_o our_o author_n have_v plain_o tell_v we_o as_o we_o do_v the_o papist_n what_o those_o error_n or_o false_a doctrine_n be_v the_o belief_n or_o profession_n of_o which_o we_o require_v among_o the_o condition_n of_o our_o communion_n which_o till_o he_o undertake_v to_o do_v he_o must_v i_o think_v acknowledge_v that_o what_o mr._n chillingworth_n say_v as_o to_o the_o believe_v and_o profess_v of_o error_n be_v no_o way_n to_o his_o present_a purpose_n except_o it_o be_v to_o amuse_v and_o keep_v up_o the_o prejudice_n of_o believe_v or_o profess_v of_o error_n now_o if_o by_o practise_v a_o error_n be_v mean_v the_o do_v any_o thing_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o god_n law_n such_o as_o pray_v to_o saint_n or_o worship_v the_o host_n or_o image_n to_o which_o and_o such_o like_a thing_n undoubted_o he_o have_v a_o eye_n in_o that_o expression_n i_o grant_v that_o it_o be_v a_o cause_n abundant_o sufficient_a to_o refuse_v the_o communion_n of_o any_o church_n if_o she_o require_v any_o such_o practice_n as_o a_o condition_n of_o it_o but_o than_o it_o must_v be_v show_v that_o some_o such_o practice_n be_v so_o require_v by_o our_o church_n or_o else_o this_o clause_n will_v be_v as_o little_a to_o the_o purpose_n as_o the_o former_a but_o if_o by_o practise_v a_o error_n be_v mean_v the_o do_n of_o a_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o sinful_a but_o yet_o be_v apprehend_v to_o be_v improper_a oâ—_n inconvenient_a and_o therefore_o may_v be_v account_v a_o error_n in_o point_n not_o oâ—_n lawfulness_n but_o of_o prudence_n decency_n or_o the_o like_a if_o any_o church_n require_v the_o practice_n only_o of_o such_o a_o error_n as_o this_o however_o it_o may_v be_v proper_a to_o desire_v and_o with_o a_o modest_a earnestness_n to_o press_v for_o a_o alteration_n in_o such_o thing_n for_o the_o better_a yet_o i_o can_v see_v how_o upon_o this_o ground_n it_o can_v be_v justify_v to_o renounce_v or_o refuse_v the_o communion_n of_o such_o a_o church_n but_o of_o this_o anon_o as_o to_o mr._n chillingworth_n proposal_n to_o the_o papist_n that_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o join_v with_o they_o in_o any_o such_o form_n of_o worship_v god_n as_o shall_v be_v whole_o take_v out_o of_o the_o scripture_n if_o the_o same_o be_v make_v to_o we_o i_o answer_v that_o if_o by_o a_o form_n of_o worship_n whole_o take_v out_o of_o the_o scripture_n be_v mean_v such_o a_o one_o every_o of_o who_o word_n and_o expression_n be_v immediate_o and_o in_o term_n contain_v in_o the_o that_o thing_n be_v forbid_v either_o express_o or_o by_o just_a and_o necessary_a consequence_n that_o some_o of_o our_o constitution_n then_o though_o not_o express_o be_v yet_o by_o good_a consequence_n forbid_v he_o endeavour_v to_o prove_v because_o be_v not_o command_v by_o god_n they_o be_v yet_o require_v by_o man_n as_o part_n or_o mean_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n which_o as_o he_o pretend_v be_v contrary_n to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o for_o the_o proof_n of_o what_o he_o say_v he_o produce_v some_o text_n of_o scripture_n and_o then_o confirm_v all_o by_o the_o authority_n of_o my_o lord_n bishop_n of_o derry_n in_o his_o late_a discourse_n of_o humane_a invention_n etc._n etc._n in_o that_o paragraph_n of_o my_o address_n now_o under_o consideration_n i_o have_v call_v those_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n which_o by_o authority_n be_v appoint_v to_o be_v use_v by_o the_o name_n of_o circumstance_n of_o god_n worship_n and_o as_o such_o asserted_a the_o lawfulness_n of_o they_o now_o whereas_o he_o will_v prove_v the_o unlawfulness_n of_o these_o thing_n as_o be_v require_v not_o as_o circumstance_n but_o as_o part_n and_o mean_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n he_o ought_v very_o clear_o and_o distinct_o to_o have_v tell_v we_o what_o he_o mean_v by_o a_o circumstance_n what_o by_o a_o part_n and_o what_o by_o the_o mean_n of_o worship_n and_o how_o these_o be_v distinguish_v one_o from_o another_o for_o as_o long_o as_o these_o term_n in_o which_o he_o seem_v to_o place_v the_o knot_n of_o the_o controversy_n remain_v obscure_a it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o clear_v the_o dispute_n or_o right_o to_o apply_v the_o proof_n which_o he_o bring_v and_o yet_o without_o any_o explication_n oâ—_n these_o term_n or_o show_v wherein_o the_o thing_n signify_v by_o they_o do_v differ_v one_o from_o another_o he_o proceed_v to_o prove_v pag._n 102_o that_o our_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n be_v with_o we_o both_o part_n and_o mean_n of_o god_n worship_n but_o that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v like_o man_n who_o be_v scuffle_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o not_o distinct_o know_v what_o it_o be_v we_o contend_v about_o i_o must_v as_o i_o proceed_v endeavour_v to_o do_v what_o he_o have_v think_v fit_a to_o leave_v undo_v i_o mean_v to_o state_n the_o signification_n of_o these_o word_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v know_v the_o difference_n of_o the_o thing_n one_o from_o another_o it_o be_v then_o premise_v what_o all_o i_o suppose_v will_v grant_v that_o the_o true_a worship_n of_o god_n consist_v in_o those_o thing_n and_o in_o those_o only_a which_o he_o himself_o have_v command_v that_o and_o nothing_o else_o but_o that_o be_v proper_o to_o be_v call_v a_o part_n of_o any_o thing_n without_o which_o the_o thing_n will_v be_v in_o itself_o imperfect_a and_o defective_a thus_o every_o limb_n of_o a_o man_n be_v a_o part_n of_o he_o because_o the_o want_n of_o any_o of_o they_o will_v be_v a_o defect_n in_o the_o man_n himself_o but_o his_o garment_n though_o a_o decent_a ornament_n be_v yet_o no_o part_n of_o he_o because_o if_o he_o be_v strip_v stark_o naked_a or_o clothe_v in_o a_o undecent_a garb_n though_o this_o may_v perhaps_o expose_v he_o to_o the_o scorn_n of_o some_o man_n yet_o will_v he_o in_o himself_o be_v never_o the_o less_o a_o perfect_a and_o complete_a man_n upon_o that_o account_n thus_o also_o prayer_n thanksgiving_n confession_n the_o susception_n of_o baptism_n and_o the_o receive_v the_o lord's-supper_n be_v each_o of_o they_o part_n of_o god_n worship_n because_o he_o who_o omit_v any_o one_o of_o they_o in_o its_o proper_a season_n thereby_o render_v his_o worship_n in_o itself_o defective_a and_o imperfect_a but_o the_o outward_a mode_n or_o ceremony_n which_o may_v be_v annex_v to_o this_o worship_n or_o any_o part_n of_o it_o be_v not_o themselves_o any_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n although_o they_o may_v be_v a_o decent_a ornament_n of_o it_o because_o the_o absence_n of_o they_o although_o it_o may_v perhaps_o in_o some_o man_n eye_n render_v the_o worship_n mean_v and_o contemptible_a yet_o will_v not_o make_v it_o in_o itself_o to_o be_v ever_o the_o less_o complete_a perfect_a or_o acceptable_a to_o almighty_a god_n if_o then_o our_o author_n can_v prove_v that_o it_o be_v the_o judgement_n of_o our_o church_n that_o the_o lay_v aside_o of_o any_o of_o her_o ceremony_n will_v render_v the_o worship_n of_o
and_o carry_v his_o provision_n with_o he_o or_o he_o go_v on_o horseback_n or_o in_o a_o coach_n and_o have_v such_o and_o such_o conveniency_n for_o his_o journey_n thus_o also_o if_o we_o be_v inquire_v after_o the_o worship_n of_o any_o church_n or_o party_n whatsoever_o the_o natural_a order_n of_o our_o question_n will_v be_v this_o first_o to_o ask_v who_o they_o worship_v viz._n whether_o the_o true_a god_n or_o a_o false_a god_n or_o any_o other_o person_n beside_o god_n and_o if_o it_o appear_v that_o they_o worship_v the_o true_a god_n than_o the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v ask_v will_v be_v wherein_o do_v that_o worship_n which_o they_o pay_v to_o god_n consist_v do_v they_o confess_v their_o sin_n and_o pray_v to_o he_o and_o give_v he_o thanks_o be_v they_o baptise_a and_o do_v they_o celebrate_v the_o lord_n supper_n according_a to_o god_n own_o command_n and_o if_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o in_o all_o this_o they_o follow_v the_o rule_n of_o god_n word_n then_o in_o the_o three_o place_n this_o question_n will_v fall_v in_o viz._n after_o what_o way_n and_o manner_n or_o by_o what_o mean_n or_o in_o what_o method_n do_v they_o pay_v and_o perform_v this_o worship_n what_o time_n what_o place_n what_o word_n what_o gesture_n etc._n etc._n do_v they_o appoint_v or_o use_v in_o the_o several_a part_n of_o it_o thus_o far_o then_o our_o author_n and_o i_o be_v agree_v viz._n first_o that_o to_o prescribe_v any_o thing_n as_o a_o part_n of_o god_n worship_n which_o he_o himself_o have_v not_o command_v be_v a_o sin_n but_o then_o i_o have_v show_v that_o our_o form_n and_o ceremony_n be_v not_o by_o we_o make_v such_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n second_o i_o agree_v with_o he_o that_o our_o liturgy_n and_o ceremony_n be_v the_o way_n mean_n or_o method_n of_o perform_v our_o public_a devotion_n but_o then_o i_o have_v also_o show_v that_o this_o signify_v no_o more_o but_o that_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v thus_o by_o humane_a law_n prescribe_v be_v the_o circumstance_n which_o do_v accompany_v and_o regulate_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o worship_n now_o if_o our_o author_n proof_n do_v evince_n that_o to_o require_v any_o thing_n which_o god_n himself_o have_v not_o command_v as_o a_o way_n or_o mean_n of_o worship_n render_v the_o thing_n itself_o unlawful_a and_o in_o effect_n forbid_v without_o any_o other_o prohibition_n of_o it_o then_o i_o must_v confess_v he_o have_v not_o only_o sufficient_o answer_v my_o address_n to_o the_o nonconformist_n but_o also_o over-turned_n all_o the_o liturgy_n and_o ritual_n not_o of_o our_o church_n only_o but_o of_o all_o other_o church_n also_o nay_o i_o do_v not_o well_o see_v how_o the_o directory_n itself_o will_v escape_v the_o stroke_n of_o so_o strict_a a_o censure_n except_o he_o be_v able_a to_o show_v that_o every_o punctilio_n which_o be_v there_o prescribe_v be_v no_o more_o than_o what_o be_v i_o must_v not_o say_v allow_v and_o leave_v at_o liberty_n but_o positive_o command_v by_o god_n and_o as_o those_o argument_n upon_o the_o strength_n of_o which_o we_o renounce_v the_o communion_n of_o any_o church_n and_o refuse_v obedience_n to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n aught_o to_o be_v both_o very_a clear_a and_o very_a solid_a so_o that_o i_o may_v not_o abate_v the_o force_n of_o those_o which_o our_o author_n bring_v i_o shall_v set_v they_o down_o in_o his_o own_o word_n without_o omit_v a_o syllable_n first_o then_o say_v he_o p._n 101._o whatever_o part_n or_o mean_n of_o divine_a worship_n be_v not_o command_v be_v forbid_v be_v evident_a from_o that_o reason_n give_v leu._n 10._o 1._o why_o god_n destroy_v nadab_n and_o abihu_n for_o offer_v strange_a fire_n which_o be_v this_o for_o i_o command_v they_o not_o now_o beside_o that_o he_o pervert_v the_o text_n by_o add_v the_o word_n for_o to_o make_v the_o word_n run_v in_o a_o argumentative_a style_n which_o be_v only_a part_n of_o a_o historical_a narration_n and_o by_o put_v the_o word_n i_o instead_o of_o he_o as_o if_o those_o word_n be_v immediate_o speak_v by_o god_n himself_o whereas_o they_o be_v only_o a_o part_n of_o that_o relation_n which_o moses_n make_v of_o the_o matter_n of_o fact_n the_o case_n of_o nadab_n and_o abihu_n be_v plain_o this_o god_n have_v command_v that_o when_o incense_n be_v to_o be_v burn_v before_o he_o it_o shall_v be_v do_v with_o fire_n take_v from_o off_o the_o altar_n as_o appear_v from_o leu._n 16._o 12._o but_o these_o man_n neglect_v the_o command_n of_o god_n put_v other_o strange_a fire_n into_o their_o censer_n for_o which_o they_o be_v destroy_v by_o fire_n from_o the_o lord._n leu._n 10._o 1_o 2._o all_o then_o that_o can_v be_v infer_v from_o hence_o be_v that_o whosoever_o shall_v omit_v to_o do_v what_o god_n command_v as_o nadab_n and_o abihu_n do_v to_o take_v fire_n from_o the_o altar_n and_o instead_o thereof_o shall_v do_v another_o thing_n which_o god_n have_v not_o command_v as_o they_o do_v in_o put_v strange_a fire_n in_o their_o censer_n be_v guilty_a of_o a_o sin_n but_o where_o nothing_o be_v omit_v which_o god_n have_v command_v it_o do_v not_o follow_v from_o hence_o that_o the_o do_v of_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v uncommand_v in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n be_v therefore_o unlawful_a because_o it_o be_v not_o command_v but_o if_o he_o shall_v tell_v i_o that_o the_o command_n for_o take_v fire_n from_o the_o altar_n be_v not_o give_v for_o aught_o that_o appear_v till_o after_o the_o death_n of_o nadab_n and_o abihu_n i_o shall_v desire_v he_o to_o let_v i_o know_v if_o there_o be_v no_o certain_a sort_n of_o fire_n at_o that_o time_n ordain_v and_o appoint_v for_o the_o burn_a of_o incense_n how_o can_v that_o fire_n which_o these_o man_n offer_v be_v term_v strange_a fire_n for_o the_o word_n strange_n necessary_o imply_v that_o there_o be_v some_o other_o fire_n which_o be_v not_o strange_a which_o they_o ought_v to_o have_v offer_v that_o be_v to_o say_v some_o certain_a sort_n of_o fire_n particular_o appoint_v for_o this_o purpose_n his_o next_o argument_n be_v this_o the_o reason_n say_v he_o of_o god_n reject_v what_o be_v offer_v be_v 1._o 12._o be_v give_v who_o have_v require_v these_o thing_n at_o your_o hand_n to_o which_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o thing_n there_o speak_v of_o and_o which_o god_n at_o that_o time_n reject_v be_v such_o as_o he_o have_v positive_o command_v and_o require_v from_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n namely_o sacrifice_n burnt-offering_n incense_n etc._n etc._n as_o every_o man_n that_o read_v the_o precedent_n and_o follow_a verse_n may_v plain_o see_v the_o reason_n then_o why_o god_n reject_v they_o can_v not_o be_v as_o our_o author_n will_v insinuate_v because_o he_o have_v not_o require_v they_o for_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o he_o have_v require_v they_o in_o the_o mosaic_a law_n but_o because_o the_o people_n rest_v in_o these_o outward_a performance_n and_o be_v not_o true_o sanctify_v in_o their_o heart_n nor_o holy_a in_o their_o life_n which_o be_v what_o he_o chief_o and_o so_o in_o a_o manner_n only_o require_v from_o they_o as_o in_o comparison_n thereof_o almost_o not_o to_o regard_v those_o outward_a performance_n although_o of_o his_o own_o appointment_n that_o this_o be_v the_o plain_a and_o only_a purport_n such_o a_o prohibition_n in_o any_o part_n of_o our_o liturgy_n again_o god_n have_v undoubted_o permit_v we_o to_o omit_v the_o posture_n of_o sit_v at_o the_o reception_n of_o the_o holy_a communion_n because_o it_o neither_o appear_v that_o this_o be_v the_o very_a posture_n in_o which_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n receive_v it_o nor_o if_o it_o be_v be_v there_o any_o command_n that_o we_o shall_v imitate_v they_o in_o that_o circumstance_n any_o more_o than_o in_o the_o time_n or_o place_n wherein_o they_o perform_v that_o office_n which_o be_v after_o supper_n and_o in_o a_o upper_a room_n but_o by_o the_o directory_n man_n be_v as_o much_o compel_v to_o sit_v as_o by_o the_o liturgy_n to_o kneel_v at_o the_o holy_a communion_n the_o word_n of_o the_o former_a p._n 51_o that_o the_o table_n be_v to_o be_v so_o convenient_o plate_v that_o the_o communicant_n may_v orderly_o sit_v about_o it_o be_v altogether_o as_o directive_n as_o the_o rubric_n of_o the_o latter_a that_o the_o minister_n shall_v deliver_v the_o communion_n in_o both_o kind_n to_o the_o people_n all_o meek_o kneel_v and_o the_o word_n of_o the_o ordinance_n of_o parliament_n for_o the_o communion_n as_o that_o of_o kneel_v by_o those_o of_o the_o establish_v church_n and_o therefore_o the_o directory_n according_a to_o our_o author_n must_v be_v as_o much_o a_o infringement_n of_o christian_a liberty_n in_o this_o also_o as_o our_o liturgy_n have_v do_v with_o the_o objection_n which_o be_v draw_v from_o the_o pretence_n of_o christian_a liberty_n in_o the_o next_o place_n i_o propose_v that_o which_o be_v raise_v from_o the_o pretend_a numerousness_n and_o burden_n of_o our_o ceremony_n to_o which_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o utmost_a that_o this_o can_v amount_v to_o if_o it_o be_v true_a as_o i_o do_v not_o conceive_v that_o it_o be_v will_v be_v only_o a_o inconvenience_n and_o not_o a_o sin_n to_o which_o he_o reply_v p._n 109_o that_o god_n word_n tell_v we_o that_o to_o do_v what_o be_v not_o convenient_a be_v sinful_a rom._n 1._o 28._o ephes_n 5._o 4._o but_o be_v not_o this_o still_o mere_a trisle_a and_o play_v with_o the_o ambiguity_n of_o a_o word_n which_o i_o plain_o take_v in_o one_o sense_n and_o he_o wilful_o mistake_v in_o another_o for_o whereas_o a_o thing_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v inconvenient_a either_o first_o because_o it_o be_v troublesome_a or_o second_o because_o it_o be_v unlawful_a nothing_o can_v be_v more_o manifest_a than_o that_o here_o i_o take_v the_o word_n inconvenient_a in_o the_o former_a sense_n only_o and_o st._n paul_n in_o the_o place_n he_o assign_v only_o in_o the_o latter_a if_o our_o ceremony_n be_v too_o numerous_a and_o burdensome_a as_o i_o can_v see_v why_o they_o shall_v be_v so_o think_v yet_o this_o will_v only_o render_v they_o troublesome_a and_o upon_o that_o account_n inconvenient_a but_o not_o unlawful_a whereas_o it_o be_v plain_o the_o unlawfulness_n and_o not_o the_o troublesomeness_n of_o unrighteousness_n fornication_n wickedness_n covetousness_n etc._n etc._n and_o of_o filthiness_n and_o foolish_a talk_n and_o jest_v which_o make_v the_o apostle_n in_o the_o above_o mention_v place_n to_o call_v they_o by_o the_o name_n of_o inconvenient_a but_o say_v he_o be_v not_o this_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o pharisee_n mat._n 23_o 4._o that_o they_o burden_a man_n conscience_n with_o their_o own_o invention_n to_o which_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o pharisee_n in_o that_o place_n must_v needs_o be_v one_o or_o both_o of_o these_o viz._n either_o first_o the_o impose_v of_o humane_a tradition_n as_o a_o part_n of_o god_n law_n of_o which_o i_o have_v already_o speak_v under_o the_o objection_n about_o christian_a liberty_n or_o second_o the_o require_v a_o much_o more_o strict_a and_o exact_a obedience_n to_o god_n law_n from_o other_o people_n than_o what_o they_o themselves_o perform_v as_o appear_v from_o the_o two_o procede_a verse_n which_o be_v a_o piece_n of_o most_o gross_a hypocrisy_n but_o what_o relation_n this_o have_v to_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n appoint_v by_o authority_n for_o order_n and_o decency_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n our_o author_n must_v inform_v i_o for_o of_o myself_o i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o find_v it_o out_o in_o my_o address_n i_o have_v take_v notice_n that_o though_o st._n austin_n complain_v of_o the_o number_n and_o burden_n of_o ceremony_n in_o his_o time_n yet_o â—â—_o never_o find_v that_o he_o look_v upon_o that_o as_o any_o cause_n for_o separate_v from_o the_o establish_v church_n upon_o which_o he_o think_v he_o have_v catch_v i_o several_a way_n and_o first_o he_o demand_v why_o the_o dissenter_n may_v not_o now_o complain_v as_o well_o as_o st._n
