since_o this_o will_v render_v the_o ordinance_n of_o the_o gospel_n baptism_n and_o the_o supper_n unprofitable_a and_o vain_a and_o thing_n but_o of_o like_a indifferency_n as_o be_v those_o meat_n of_o which_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o if_o a_o man_n eat_v of_o they_o neither_o be_v he_o the_o better_a or_o if_o he_o eat_v not_o neither_o be_v he_o the_o worse_a 1_o cor._n 8.8_o but_o i_o presume_v rather_o that_o he_o mean_v that_o they_o avail_v not_o comparative_o or_o else_o in_o the_o business_n of_o justification_n our_o wat_fw-mi then_o will_v it_o follow_v that_o because_o these_o external_a rite_n baptism_n and_o the_o like_a do_v not_o avail_v unto_o man_n justification_n when_o they_o be_v observe_v that_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o necessary_a unto_o as_o to_o church-communion_n as_o that_o church-communion_n waâ—_n not_o to_o be_v have_v wâ—â—hout_n it_o gen._n 17.4_o exod._n 12.48_o if_o so_o then_o how_o can_v the_o querist_n estimate_v the_o usefulness_n and_o disusefulnesse_n of_o baptism_n as_o to_o church-communion_n by_o circumcision_n as_o he_o do_v and_o not_o conclude_v it_o necessary_a to_o church-communion_n as_o well_o as_o circumcision_n be_v but_o i_o demand_v how_o the_o apostle_n or_o other_o christian_n in_o their_o time_n will_v have_v know_v or_o have_v be_v able_a upon_o good_a ground_n to_o have_v conclude_v that_o glad_o receive_v the_o word_n and_o be_v baptize_v be_v indeed_o part_n of_o that_o number_n of_o 3000._o that_o be_v add_v to_o the_o church_n or_o to_o the_o discsple_n as_o he_o say_v it_o be_v the_o probable_a opinion_n of_o some_o that_o they_o be_v than_o i_o demand_v i_o say_v whether_o these_o child_n and_o family_n be_v baptize_v or_o no_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v they_o be_v not_o than_o he_o put_v to_o rebuke_v another_o of_o his_o opinion_n which_o be_v that_o when_o believer_n themselves_o be_v baptize_v their_o child_n be_v baptize_v also_o to_o the_o belief_n of_o which_o he_o will_v persuade_v we_o at_o least_o as_o probable_a in_o his_o 24._o quaere_fw-la from_o act_n 16.15.33_o 1_o cor._n 1.16_o if_o he_o say_v they_o be_v baptize_v why_o then_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v that_o these_o be_v some_o of_o the_o number_n yet_o how_o will_v this_o prove_v that_o other_o beside_o those_o that_o be_v baptize_v be_v add_v to_o the_o church_n which_o yet_o part_n of_o the_o 3000._o that_o be_v add_v to_o the_o church_n if_o by_o child_n he_o mean_v little_a child_n or_o infant_n for_o else_o if_o they_o be_v adult_a one_o they_o may_v glad_o receive_v the_o word_n and_o be_v baptize_v as_o well_o as_o their_o parent_n it_o sufficient_o appear_v in_o that_o it_o be_v say_v they_o i._n e._n they_o that_o be_v add_v as_o well_o as_o they_o to_o who_o they_o be_v add_v continue_v steadfast_o in_o the_o apostle_n doctrine_n and_o fellowship_n and_o in_o break_v of_o bread_n and_o in_o prayer_n and_o i_o presume_v the_o querist_n will_v not_o say_v that_o little_a child_n infant_n do_v continue_v steadfast_o in_o the_o apostle_n doctrine_n and_o fellowship_n and_o in_o break_v of_o bread_n and_o prayer_n and_o if_o not_o than_o they_o be_v none_o of_o the_o number_n of_o the_o 3000._o that_o be_v add_v to_o the_o church_n and_o so_o i_o think_v by_o this_o time_n the_o probable_a opinion_n of_o some_o in_o this_o behalf_n be_v render_v more_o than_o probable_o to_o be_v a_o weak_a groundless_a and_o erroneous_a opinion_n 3._o to_o remove_v that_o doubt_n touch_v the_o improbability_n that_o 3000._o man_n shall_v distinct_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o a_o man_n speak_v unless_o we_o will_v suppose_v they_o to_o stand_v near_o to_o he_o that_o speak_v 1._o evident_a it_o be_v that_o they_o do_v hear_v and_o so_o hear_v as_o to_o receive_v the_o word_n glad_o but_o whether_o they_o be_v near_o to_o he_o that_o speak_v or_o no_o be_v more_o than_o he_o or_o i_o can_v tell_v or_o need_v to_o know_v but_o 2._o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n to_o suppose_v that_o all_o the_o whole_a 3000._o do_v all_o of_o they_o hear_v and_o convert_v in_o the_o selfsame_a hour_n or_o juncture_n of_o time_n for_o one_o while_o the_o apostle_n may_v preach_v to_o one_o company_n of_o they_o and_o another_o while_n to_o another_o company_n and_o yet_o this_o will_v not_o hinder_v but_o that_o they_o may_v all_o be_v convert_v baptize_v and_o add_v to_o the_o church_n the_o selfsame_a day_n 3._o neither_o do_v i_o see_v any_o necessity_n to_o hold_v that_o all_o these_o 3000._o that_o be_v in_o one_o day_n convert_v baptize_v and_o add_v to_o the_o church_n be_v thus_o convert_v and_o baptize_v by_o peter_n only_o but_o by_o he_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o apostle_n or_o by_o they_o and_o the_o other_o disciple_n also_o for_o 1._o it_o be_v say_v that_o peter_n stand_v up_o with_o the_o eleven_o lift_v up_o his_o voece_n and_o say_v unto_o they_o etc._n etc._n and_o do_v not_o this_o employ_v that_o the_o eleven_o do_v take_v original_n main_a and_o principal_a foundation_n of_o the_o holy_a brother_n hood_n among_o the_o saint_n be_v not_o the_o ceremony_n of_o their_o baptism_n but_o their_o fellowship_n and_o communion_n in_o the_o divine_a nature_n and_o inward_a relation_n to_o the_o same_o christ_n by_o one_o and_o the_o same_o precious_a faith_n respon_n we_o do_v not_o affirm_v that_o they_o be_v add_v to_o that_o particular_a church_n by_o baptism_n immediate_o without_o any_o other_o act_n intervening_a but_o we_o say_v they_o be_v not_o add_v without_o baptism_n and_o so_o much_o be_v in_o effect_n acknowledge_v by_o the_o querist_n himself_o in_o that_o he_o say_v this_o addition_n be_v not_o mention_v till_o after_o their_o be_v baptize_v and_o therefore_o their_o baptism_n must_v needs_o go_v before_o their_o addition_n to_o the_o church_n unless_o we_o will_v suppose_v luke_n to_o have_v begin_v at_o the_o wrong_a end_n of_o this_o part_n of_o his_o narrative_n in_o mention_v that_o first_o which_o be_v last_o do_v and_o that_o last_o which_o be_v first_o do_v and_o if_o so_o then_o according_a to_o the_o order_n of_o thing_n do_v they_o be_v first_o add_v to_o the_o church_n and_o then_o afterward_o do_v glad_o receive_v the_o word_n to_o conversion_n and_o be_v baptize_v which_o i_o suppose_v no_o man_n be_v so_o void_a of_o common_a sense_n as_o to_o believe_v and_o if_o their_o baptism_n do_v precede_v their_o addition_n to_o the_o church_n then_o why_o do_v the_o querist_n strive_v so_o as_o he_o do_v to_o interest_n their_o believe_a or_o discipleship_n with_o exclusion_n of_o their_o baptism_n as_o the_o reason_n and_o ground_n of_o luke_n saying_n they_o be_v add_v to_o the_o church_n for_o if_o he_o do_v not_o exclude_v baptism_n in_o recount_v the_o reason_n of_o that_o addition_n than_o we_o be_v agree_v for_o there_o be_v no_o question_n but_o that_o their_o glad_o receive_v the_o word_n or_o believe_v the_o word_n or_o become_a disciple_n by_o the_o word_n be_v one_o reason_n or_o ground_n of_o their_o addition_n to_o the_o church_n but_o not_o the_o only_a one_o fâ—r_n luke_n mention_n their_o be_v baptize_v as_o well_o barren_a of_o proof_n and_o destitute_a of_o friend_n that_o must_v be_v behold_v to_o such_o stranger_n to_o stand_v by_o it_o and_o succour_v it_o vi_o query_n whether_o when_o paul_n soon_o after_o his_o conversion_n assay_v to_o join_v to_o the_o church_n and_o disciple_n at_o jerusalem_n act_n 9.26_o do_v this_o church_n make_v any_o enquiry_n after_o his_o baptism_n as_o whether_o he_o have_v be_v baptize_v or_o no_o in_o order_n to_o his_o reception_n among_o they_o or_o do_v they_o know_v he_o have_v be_v baptize_v or_o do_v barnabas_n in_o give_v satisfaction_n to_o the_o apostle_n and_o church_n concern_v his_o meetness_n to_o be_v admit_v into_o communion_n with_o they_o so_o much_o as_o mention_v his_o be_v baptize_v but_o only_o declare_v unto_o they_o how_o he_o have_v have_v no_o good_a reason_n to_o suppose_v much_o less_o conclude_v that_o paul_n be_v admit_v to_o communion_n with_o the_o church_n until_o the_o church_n have_v knowledge_n either_o from_o reason_n have_v quaery_v whether_o the_o church_n upon_o paul_n assay_v to_o join_v with_o they_o do_v make_v any_o enquiry_n at_o all_o whether_o he_o be_v convert_v to_o the_o faith_n or_o no_o as_o whether_o he_o be_v baptize_v or_o no_o for_o indeed_o here_o be_v no_o express_a mention_n make_v of_o the_o church_n inquire_v after_o the_o one_o any_o more_o than_o the_o other_o only_o it_o be_v without_o their_o be_v baptise_a a_o common_a way_n too_o common_a indeed_o and_o such_o as_o god_n have_v not_o sanctify_v and_o therefore_o the_o question_n be_v not_o touch_v the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o their_o person_n god-ward_o in_o respect_n of_o justification_n but_o of_o their_o way_n of_o hold_v communion_n without_o baptism_n and_o whether_o this_o be_v as_o well_o approve_v by_o god_n as_o their_o person_n be_v accept_v with_o he_o upon_o their_o believe_a if_o not_o we_o may_v love_v and_o honour_v their_o person_n and_o yet_o dislike_v their_o way_n of_o communion_n which_o we_o must_v judge_v till_o they_o be_v build_v together_o in_o a_o orderly_a way_n the_o foundation_n first_o which_o in_o primitive_a church_n be_v never_o lay_v without_o baptism_n and_o the_o superstructure_n after_o you_o also_o as_o lively_a stone_n be_v build_v or_o be_v you_o build_v up_o a_o spiritual_a house_n 1_o pet._n 2.5_o they_o be_v first_o lively_a stone_n and_o then_o build_v up_o a_o spiritual_a house_n they_o be_v not_o a_o spiritual_a house_n because_o live_a stone_n until_o these_o live_a stone_n be_v build_v up_o and_o can_v any_o man_n think_v that_o there_o be_v any_o one_o spiritual_a house_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n who_o foundation_n be_v lay_v without_o baptism_n if_o not_o as_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a he_o can_v reasonable_o so_o think_v then_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o think_v that_o they_o build_v without_o their_o rule_n and_o not_o according_a to_o the_o method_n of_o the_o wise_a master-buliders_a of_o the_o first_o church_n who_o both_o lie_v foundation_n and_o put_v on_o the_o top-stone_n too_o without_o baptism_n for_o a_o man_n then_o to_o hold_v communion_n with_o a_o company_n of_o believer_n not_o in_o gospel_n order_n and_o to_o act_v with_o they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v and_o yet_o to_o witness_v against_o such_o practice_n of_o they_o too_o what_o be_v it_o else_o then_o for_o a_o man_n to_o condemn_v himself_o in_o that_o which_o he_o allow_v rom._n 14.22_o yea_o and_o to_o make_v himself_o a_o transgressor_n in_o building_n what_o he_o destroy_v gal._n 2.18_o this_o error_n then_o of_o non-baptisme_n be_v a_o error_n not_o of_o believer_n in_o a_o church_n due_o so_o call_v but_o a_o error_n against_o the_o way_n of_o their_o become_v a_o church_n according_a to_o gospel_n form_n it_o be_v not_o a_o if_o baptism_n have_v be_v administer_v according_a to_o gospel-rule_a to_o man_n who_o by_o profession_n appear_v or_o seem_v true_a believer_n when_o they_o be_v baptize_v though_o at_o the_o time_n of_o their_o baptise_v they_o be_v not_o so_o indeed_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o so_o far_o as_o i_o know_v necessary_a to_o their_o be_v of_o a_o church_n to_o be_v baptize_v again_o when_o they_o come_v true_o to_o believe_v but_o if_o person_n before_o they_o do_v believe_v have_v not_o be_v baptize_v at_o all_o with_o any_o baptism_n that_o will_v hold_v weight_n in_o the_o balance_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n but_o only_o with_o such_o which_o essential_o differ_v from_o scripture-baptisme_n both_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o subject_a and_o external_a form_n of_o administration_n as_o infant-baptisme_n do_v in_o which_o respect_v it_o be_v of_o no_o more_o validity_n than_o no_o baptism_n at_o all_o than_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o such_o person_n shall_v do_v than_o there_o will_v be_v for_o he_o to_o mistake_v the_o name_n or_o person_n of_o a_o man_n the_o knowledge_n of_o who_o do_v nothing_o at_o all_o concern_v he_o if_o there_o be_v than_o i_o shall_v not_o doubt_v to_o affirm_v that_o there_o be_v more_o danger_n for_o a_o man_n to_o invocate_v the_o name_n of_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n and_o in_o their_o name_n to_o say_v i_o baptise_v thou_o such_o or_o such_o a_o one_o when_o neither_o father_n son_n nor_o holy_a ghost_n have_v give_v he_o commission_n so_o to_o do_v which_o yet_o be_v the_o case_n indeed_o the_o crime_n of_o mistake_v the_o true_a or_o right_a subject_n of_o baptism_n then_o there_o be_v in_o mistake_v the_o man_n that_o be_v melchisedech_n father_n for_o the_o one_o be_v a_o counterfeit_n or_o feign_v of_o a_o commission_n from_o heaven_n and_o the_o father_n of_o a_o untruth_n upon_o or_o the_o speak_n of_o a_o untruth_n in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o provoke_v he_o to_o anger_n and_o the_o other_o viz._n to_o suppose_v melchisedech_n father_n to_o be_v noah_n in_o case_n he_o be_v some_o other_o man_n will_v be_v a_o error_n only_o of_o less_o import_n as_o viz_o for_o a_o man_n to_o go_v about_o to_o make_v himself_o wise_a above_o that_o which_o be_v write_v in_o a_o business_n that_o concern_v he_o not_o to_o know_v and_o wherein_o his_o ignorance_n will_v not_o prejudice_v he_o but_o help_v he_o in_o the_o application_n of_o that_o resemblance_n which_o the_o apostle_n make_v between_o christ_n and_o melchisedech_n heb._n 7.3_o querie_n fourteen_o whether_o may_v not_o the_o question_n about_o the_o appropriate_a subject_n of_o baptism_n as_o it_o be_v state_v by_o the_o brethren_n of_o new_a baptism_n in_o opposition_n to_o the_o judgement_n and_o that_o be_v unlearned_a unprofitable_a and_o vain_a i_o can_v easy_o have_v consent_v in_o the_o affirmative_a because_o the_o apostle_n in_o that_o place_n quote_v by_o the_o querist_n tit._n 3.9_o do_v point_n at_o these_o question_n about_o genealogy_n and_o strive_n about_o the_o law_n as_o special_o intend_v by_o he_o and_o what_o question_n or_o strive_n about_o the_o law_n if_o not_o whether_o circumcision_n be_v not_o yet_o in_o use_n under_o the_o gospel_n since_o the_o same_o apostle_n in_o the_o same_o epistle_n chap._n 1.10_o call_v those_o of_o the_o circumcision_n vain_a talker_n and_o vain_a talker_n or_o vain_a talk_n or_o such_o question_n as_o be_v unprofitable_a and_o vain_a agree_v well_o enough_o to_o meet_v in_o the_o same_o person_n 2._o but_o that_o the_o question_n about_o the_o appropriate_a subject_n of_o baptism_n if_o state_v according_a to_o truth_n though_o in_o opposition_n to_o almost_o the_o whole_a world_n call_v christian_n or_o if_o but_o agitate_a and_o debate_v in_o order_n to_o the_o find_v out_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n thereabouts_o shall_v deserve_v to_o be_v number_v with_o those_o foolish_a and_o unlearned_a question_n which_o be_v unprofitable_a and_o vain_a i_o can_v believe_v because_o the_o appropriate_a subject_n of_o baptism_n be_v essential_a to_o the_o ordinance_n itself_o neither_o be_v that_o any_o more_o the_o baptism_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v apply_v to_o any_o other_o subject_n than_o he_o have_v appoint_v then_o that_o will_v be_v the_o punitive_a or_o remunerative_a justice_n of_o the_o parliament_n in_o case_n another_o man_n shall_v be_v punish_v or_o reward_v by_o he_o or_o they_o who_o they_o intrust_v with_o the_o executive_a part_n instead_o of_o he_o who_o the_o parliament_n have_v but_o as_o touch_v the_o reason_n which_o seem_v to_o induce_v the_o querist_n to_o conceive_v that_o the_o aforesaid_a question_n ought_v to_o be_v number_v with_o transgressor_n 1._o it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o the_o question_n about_o the_o appropriate_a subject_n of_o baptism_n be_v therefore_o unprofitable_a unlearned_a foolish_a and_o vain_a because_o upon_o debate_n about_o it_o strife_n contention_n evil_a surmising_n division_n and_o revile_n and_o the_o like_a have_v occasional_o take_v place_n in_o the_o world_n no_o more_o than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o because_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o
which_o man_n have_v former_o devise_v to_o make_v the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n more_o easy_a and_o plausible_a as_o to_o the_o flâ—sh_n than_o christ_n have_v make_v it_o and_o these_o blot_n be_v so_o essential_a to_o communion_n as_o that_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o eat_v of_o your_o sacrifice_n and_o not_o be_v partaker_n of_o your_o altar_n i.e._n to_o hold_v church-communion_n with_o you_o and_o not_o make_v ourselves_o guilty_a of_o that_o which_o we_o condemn_v in_o the_o way_n of_o your_o communion_n 2._o as_o for_o the_o crime_n lay_v to_o the_o charge_n of_o this_o humour_n
