minister_n and_o how_o can_v he_o become_v a_o minister_n if_o a_o church_n be_v not_o before_o if_o the_o line_n of_o succession_n hold_v to_o the_o apostle_n day_n their_o call_n be_v extraordinary_a and_o they_o be_v the_o only_a officer_n that_o be_v before_o gospel_n church_n it_o speak_v nothing_o at_o all_o against_o election_n of_o the_o church_n as_o give_v the_o whole_a essence_n of_o the_o call_v to_o ordinary_a officer_n and_o it_o be_v the_o call_n of_o ordinary_a officer_n only_o that_o this_o question_n be_v about_o whether_o that_o consist_v in_o election_n deny_v that_o ordinary_a elder_n do_v baptize_v then_o when_o convert_v before_o their_o be_v gather_v into_o church_n be_v a_o thing_n which_o they_o have_v not_o give_v we_o any_o scripture-proof_n for_o a_o church_n be_v not_o to_o suffer_v person_n in_o it_o to_o continue_v unbaptise_v but_o we_o conceive_v unbaptise_v person_n may_v make_v a_o church_n and_o then_o either_o by_o communion_n with_o other_o church_n or_o by_o choose_v and_o ordain_v a_o officer_n for_o itself_o person_n in_o it_o may_v be_v baptize_v and_o thus_o we_o may_v hold_v that_o none_o but_o a_o minister_n in_o office_n can_v baptize_v and_o yet_o need_v not_o hold_v that_o there_o must_v be_v ordinary_a minister_n before_o church_n which_o to_o be_v sure_a the_o gospel_n speak_v as_o little_a of_o as_o of_o unbaptised_a person_n make_v a_o church_n and_o so_o we_o have_v answer_v their_o argument_n against_o election_n as_o essential_a to_o the_o call_v to_o office_n two_o argument_n of_o mr._n hooker_n they_o undertake_v to_o answer_v by_o assert_v that_o officer_n as_o such_o do_v sustain_v a_o relation_n to_o a_o universal_a church_n and_o by_o distinguish_v between_o the_o person_n which_o give_v be_v to_o a_o minister_n as_o to_o be_v their_o minister_n and_o those_o which_o give_v be_v to_o he_o as_o to_o be_v a_o minister_n but_o because_o neither_o the_o assertion_n nor_o the_o distinction_n be_v prove_v to_o have_v any_o soot_n in_o scripture_n therefore_o we_o pass_v they_o over_o chap._n xiiii_o wherein_o be_v show_v that_o the_o essence_n of_o the_o ministerial_a call_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o ordination_n oour_fw-mi brethren_n in_o their_o book_n call_v jus_n divin_n mini._n pag._n 140._o etc._n etc._n endeavour_n to_o prove_v that_o ordination_n of_o minister_n to_o prove_v that_o ordination_n ought_v to_o be_v with_o imposition_n of_o hand_n and_o because_o we_o have_v speak_v brief_o to_o that_o already_o and_o show_v that_o it_o be_v like_o lay_v on_o of_o hand_n be_v of_o extraordinary_a use_n for_o the_o conveyance_n of_o gift_n or_o only_o a_o indifferent_a significant_a ceremony_n to_o declare_v who_o the_o party_n be_v that_o be_v solemn_o ordain_v and_o so_o may_v without_o sin_n be_v omit_v or_o the_o end_n of_o it_o may_v be_v attain_v without_o its_o use_n by_o some_o other_o sign_n it_o may_v be_v declare_v who_o the_o person_n be_v also_o because_o themselves_o do_v not_o assert_v it_o to_o be_v any_o more_o than_o a_o inseparable_a adjunct_n to_o ordination_n therefore_o we_o shall_v not_o spend_v time_n about_o this_o ordination_n yet_o the_o whole_a of_o ordination_n may_v be_v express_v by_o it_o hence_o paul_n forbid_v timothy_n to_o lay_v hand_n sudden_o do_v not_o imply_v that_o it_o be_v his_o duty_n to_o lay_v on_o hand_n or_o that_o he_o must_v necessary_o and_o constant_o use_v that_o ceremony_n but_o that_o it_o be_v duty_n to_o ordain_v man_n which_o they_o assert_v to_o be_v the_o thing_n notify_v by_o lay_v n_o of_o hand_n which_o answer_v their_o second_o argument_n so_o the_o whole_a work_n of_o ordination_n may_v be_v comprehend_v under_o the_o ceremony_n of_o imposition_n of_o hand_n 1_o tim._n 5._o 22._o and_o yet_o it_o may_v not_o be_v of_o necessary_a and_o constant_a use_n about_o it_o any_o more_o than_o in_o the_o former_a instance_n the_o put_v a_o chain_n for_o bondage_n and_o key_n for_o the_o whole_a of_o government_n and_o rod_n for_o all_o correction_n and_o cross_v for_o all_o affliction_n etc._n etc._n will_v imply_v that_o they_o necessary_o and_o constant_o belong_v to_o they_o which_o answer_v their_o three_o and_o four_o argument_n it_o be_v sufficient_a that_o imposition_n of_o hand_n be_v sometime_o use_v about_o ordination_n to_o render_v the_o whole_a of_o it_o express_v thereby_o but_o it_o do_v not_o prove_v the_o constant_a use_n of_o the_o ceremony_n to_o be_v necessary_a but_o only_o of_o ordination_n which_o be_v the_o thing_n signify_v by_o that_o ceremony_n we_o proceed_v to_o their_o four_o assertion_n viz._n that_o ordination_n of_o minister_n ought_v to_o be_v by_o the_o lay_n on_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o 181._o jus_fw-la divin_n min._n p._n 181._o the_o presbytery_n after_o a_o brief_a explication_n of_o the_o word_n presbytery_n etc._n etc._n they_o come_v to_o that_o which_o as_o they_o tell_v we_o they_o especial_o aim_v at_o in_o this_o four_o assertion_n and_o they_o give_v it_o under_o this_o follow_a proposition_n propos_fw-fr that_o ordination_n of_o minister_n do_v belong_v to_o church_n officer_n and_o not_o to_o a_o church_n without_o officer_n and_o that_o ordination_n by_o people_n without_o minister_n be_v a_o pervert_n of_o the_o ordinance_n and_o of_o no_o more_o force_n than_o baptism_n by_o a_o midwife_n or_o consecration_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n by_o a_o person_n out_o of_o the_o office_n we_o shall_v give_v some_o argument_n to_o prove_v the_o lawfulness_n and_o validity_n of_o the_o people_n ordination_n and_o then_o answer_v their_o argument_n against_o it_o our_o proposition_n be_v this_o pro._n that_o in_o a_o church_n which_o have_v no_o officer_n or_o officer_n in_o it_o some_o believer_n may_v lawful_o or_o warrantable_o ordain_v without_o officer_n we_o say_v in_o a_o church_n that_o have_v no_o officer_n for_o if_o a_o church_n have_v officer_n in_o it_o they_o may_v go_v before_o the_o church_n in_o ordination_n as_o well_o as_o in_o pray_v on_o other_o occasion_n and_o preach_a etc._n etc._n that_o only_a officer_n must_v act_v in_o it_o in_o such_o a_o case_n be_v not_o clear_a to_o we_o as_o suppose_v a_o church_n have_v but_o two_o officer_n in_o it_o we_o do_v not_o see_v any_o necessity_n that_o the_o whole_a work_n of_o the_o day_n must_v lie_v upon_o they_o only_o but_o some_o believer_n i._n e._n such_o as_o have_v most_o of_o the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n be_v desire_v may_v lend_v assistance_n but_o whether_o that_o may_v be_v or_o not_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o our_o present_a purpose_n and_o to_o any_o case_n that_o necessary_o fall_v out_o in_o the_o congregational_a way_n if_o it_o can_v be_v prove_v that_o when_o a_o church_n have_v no_o officer_n of_o its_o own_o then_o some_o believer_n be_v depute_v or_o choose_v thereunto_o by_o the_o church_n may_v ordain_v without_o the_o necessary_a concurrence_n of_o any_o officer_n and_o we_o say_v some_o believer_n may_v ordain_v without_o officer_n not_o must_v for_o we_o do_v not_o reckon_v ordination_n a_o act_n of_o government_n and_o therefore_o church_n may_v for_o aught_o we_o yet_o see_v hold_v communion_n each_o with_o other_o in_o it_o as_o well_o as_o in_o solemn_a prayer_n upon_o upon_o any_o other_o occasion_n and_o so_o officer_n of_o other_o church_n may_v act_v in_o it_o yet_o not_o qua_fw-la officer_n but_o qua_fw-la gift_v and_o man_n gift_v may_v without_o any_o officer_n ordain_v for_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n wherein_o the_o church_n have_v its_o liberty_n who_o it_o will_v depute_v thereunto_o when_o it_o want_v officer_n and_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_o confine_v to_o officer_n as_o if_o none_o else_o may_v act_v in_o it_o if_o a_o church_n have_v officer_n the_o law_n of_o their_o relation_n to_o the_o church_n put_v they_o under_o obligation_n to_o go_v before_o the_o church_n in_o ordination_n as_o well_o as_o in_o other_o duty_n as_o preach_v administer_a of_o the_o sacrament_n etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o where_o officer_n be_v in_o a_o church_n they_o act_n as_o officer_n in_o ordination_n as_o well_o as_o they_o do_v in_o prayer_n upon_o other_o solemn_a occasion_n wherein_o undoubted_o other_o christian_n eminent_o gi_v may_v act_v in_o prayer_n yet_o do_v it_o not_o as_o officer_n this_o be_v our_o sense_n of_o the_o question_n yet_o because_o our_o brethren_n do_v account_v ordination_n to_o be_v a_o act_n of_o government_n yea_o a_o eminent_a act_n of_o jurisdiction_n therefore_o if_o in_o some_o of_o our_o argument_n may_v seem_v to_o speak_v of_o ordination_n as_o a_o act_n of_o government_n &_o of_o officer_n as_o officer_n yet_o we_o do_v not_o grant_v it_o but_o rather_o prove_v our_o sense_n of_o it_o by_o deny_v it_o in_o that_o sense_n which_o they_o plead_v for_o it_o in_o this_o be_v premise_v we_o proceed_v to_o our_o argument_n argu._n 1._o whatsoever_o will_v necessary_o and_o unavoidable_o infer_v ordination_n to_o be_v unattainable_a that_o be_v contrary_a to_o sound_v doctrine_n and_o be_v not_o to_o be_v assert_v but_o that_o some_o believer_n may_v not_o lawful_o or_o warrantable_o ordain_v without_o officer_n in_o a_o church_n that_o have_v no_o officer_n in_o it_o that_o will_v necessary_o and_o unavoidable_o infer_v ordination_n to_o be_v unattainable_a ergo_fw-la that_o some_o believer_n may_v not_o lawful_o or_o warrantable_o ordain_v without_o officer_n in_o a_o church_n that_o have_v no_o officer_n officer_n on_o earth_n authorize_v or_o appoint_v by_o christ_n to_o ordain_v in_o case_n a_o church_n have_v no_o officer_n in_o it_o any_o more_o than_o believer_n without_o officer_n and_o therefore_o
the_o scripture_n hold_v forth_o neither_o precept_n nor_o precedent_n for_o the_o necessary_a subordination_n of_o any_o church_n of_o christ_n to_o any_o society_n of_o man_n without_o itself_o for_o any_o act_n of_o church-government_n as_o this_o be_v by_o our_o brethren_n suppose_v to_o be_v it_o be_v ordinary_a for_o church_n to_o be_v without_o any_o officer_n either_o by_o the_o officer_n to_o any_o one_o congregation_n it_o be_v not_o not_o enough_o that_o they_o be_v all_o officer_n of_o christ_n to_o warrant_v their_o act_n together_o as_o officer_n but_o they_o must_v be_v commissionated_a by_o christ_n to_o act_v in_o combination_n and_o together_o as_o a_o presbytery_n or_o else_o they_o can_v justify_v their_o act_n there_o be_v no_o scripture_n warrant_v for_o any_o other_o presbytery_n but_o that_o only_a which_o be_v within_o a_o particular_a congregation_n and_o there_o be_v no_o rule_n to_o justify_v a_o presbytery_n of_o a_o particular_a congregation_n in_o put_v forth_o any_o act_n as_o a_o presbytery_n towards_o any_o but_o the_o member_n of_o that_o particular_a congregation_n where_o they_o be_v fix_v and_o therefore_o some_o believer_n may_v as_o lawful_o ordain_v as_o any_o presbyter_n in_o the_o world_n for_o their_o power_n as_o presbyter_n extend_v no_o further_a than_o their_o particular_a congregation_n and_o if_o they_o do_v not_o act_v as_o elder_n in_o ordain_v then_o why_o may_v not_o believer_n ordain_v without_o officer_n divers_a of_o mr._n collings_n argument_n against_o hear_v of_o man_n not_o ordain_v we_o may_v use_v here_o and_o they_o will_v conclude_v much_o more_o strong_o against_o call_v in_o officer_n of_o several_a church_n and_o their_o act_n in_o combination_n or_o together_o as_o a_o presbytery_n in_o ordain_v officer_n for_o a_o church_n which_o be_v without_o officer_n such_o a_o company_n of_o officer_n have_v no_o promise_n make_v to_o they_o in_o act_v as_o a_o presbytery_n nor_o the_o people_n in_o call_v they_o in_o for_o that_o end_n and_o therefore_o they_o can_v pray_v in_o faith_n for_o a_o blessing_n upon_o they_o therein_o according_a to_o his_o three_o argument_n ordain_v officer_n be_v institute_v worship_n and_o officer_n of_o divers_a church_n be_v be_v not_o warrant_v either_o by_o scripture_n precept_n or_o precedent_n to_o become_v a_o presbytery_n and_o as_o a_o presbytery_n to_o ordain_v and_o therefore_o by_o his_o four_o argument_n it_o be_v sinful_a it_o be_v to_o run_v out_o of_o god_n blessing_n for_o there_o be_v no_o promise_n make_v by_o god_n to_o it_o and_o it_o be_v a_o run_v upon_o temptation_n because_o a_o presbytery_n of_o officer_n of_o divers_a church_n be_v no_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o god_n appointment_n and_o therefore_o to_o practise_v that_o way_n be_v sinful_a and_o unlawful_a by_o his_o six_o argument_n it_o be_v to_o partake_v of_o other_o man_n sin_n for_o such_o a_o presbytery_n be_v encourage_v in_o ordain_v and_o so_o in_o sin_v they_o have_v no_o warrant_n as_o a_o presbytery_n to_o ordain_v by_o man_n come_n to_o be_v ordain_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v sinful_a by_o his_o seven_o argument_n and_o thus_o it_o may_v be_v see_v what_o inconvenience_n the_o assert_v ordination_n to_o be_v a_o act_n of_o a_o presbytery_n as_o such_o draw_v along_o with_o it_o but_o if_o ordination_n be_v no_o act_n of_o government_n no_o act_n peculiar_a to_o a_o presbytery_n as_o such_o which_o as_o we_o conceive_v it_o be_v not_o than_o a_o presbytery_n may_v ordain_v where_o a_o church_n have_v one_o and_o either_o some_o believer_n without_o officer_n may_v ordain_v or_o the_o officer_n of_o other_o church_n may_v be_v call_v in_o to_o ordain_v not_o as_o a_o presbytery_n but_o as_o person_n meet_v and_o able_a to_o do_v such_o act_n as_o ordination_n consist_v of_o in_o case_n a_o church_n have_v no_o officer_n arg._n 3._o if_o some_o believer_n who_o be_v no_o officer_n may_v public_o preach_v then_o in_o a_o church_n that_o have_v no_o officer_n they_o may_v lawful_o or_o warranable_o ordain_v without_o officer_n for_o there_o be_v no_o scripture-light_n to_o evidence_n that_o ordination_n be_v so_o great_a a_o work_n as_o preach_v or_o that_o it_o be_v more_o limit_v or_o restrain_v to_o officer_n then_o preach_v be_v but_o some_o believer_n i._n e._n such_o as_o be_v gift_v who_o be_v
