which_o together_o with_o the_o say_a sect_n make_v up_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o christian_n it_o be_v then_o most_o evident_a that_o either_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v the_o whole_a catholic_a church_n or_o that_o it_o be_v no_o part_n or_o member_n of_o it_o but_o the_o latter_a no_o protestant_n ever_o yet_o dare_v affirm_v for_o if_o they_o shall_v affirm_v that_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o catholic_a church_n this_o will_v vacate_v all_o their_o pretence_n to_o be_v a_o church_n since_o it_o be_v from_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n they_o pretend_v to_o derive_v their_o mission_n ordination_n and_o spiritual_a power_n if_o any_o they_o have_v we_o be_v then_o sure_a even_o to_o a_o demonstration_n that_o if_o what_o the_o protestant_n say_v be_v true_a the_o roman_a church_n be_v the_o whole_a catholic_a church_n and_o no_o less_o sure_a that_o neither_o the_o protestant_n nor_o any_o other_o sect_n whatsoever_o can_v be_v any_o part_n or_o member_n of_o the_o catholic_a church_n whilst_o they_o continue_v out_o of_o the_o communion_n and_o faith_n of_o the_o roman_a church_n 2._o to_o prove_v the_o roman_a church_n to_o be_v the_o catholic_a church_n the_o doctor_n require_v the_o follow_a particular_n shall_v be_v clear_o show_v and_o make_v out_o 1._o a_o plain_a constitution_n of_o our_o saviour_n whereby_o st._n peter_n and_o his_o successor_n at_o rome_n be_v make_v the_o supreme_a head_n and_o pastor_n of_o the_o whole_a christian_a church_n of_o this_o say_v he_o we_o have_v not_o the_o least_o intimation_n in_o the_o gospel_n nor_o in_o the_o act_n and_o epistle_n of_o the_o apostle_n nay_o there_o be_v clear_a evidence_n add_v he_o to_o the_o contrary_a that_o in_o the_o council_n of_o be_v why_o to_o his_o successor_n at_o rome_n rather_o than_o at_o antioch_n where_o â—e_n be_v first_o and_o unquestionable_o bishop_n answ_n touch_v a_o plain_a constitution_n etc._n etc._n frequent_a exercise_n of_o it_o as_o occasion_v offer_v it_o be_v true_a the_o scripture_n make_v no_o mention_n of_o his_o successor_n at_o rome_n nor_o do_v we_o say_v it_o be_v necessary_a he_o protestant_n viz._n the_o infallibility_n of_o the_o church_n the_o pope_n supremacy_n transubstantiation_n communion_n in_o one_o kind_n prayer_n in_o a_o unknown_a tongue_n as_o he_o be_v please_v to_o call_v it_o invocation_n of_o saint_n worship_n of_o image_n his_o own_o word_n purgatory_n and_o indulgence_n though_o this_o be_v not_o the_o order_n i_o find_v he_o observe_v in_o handle_v these_o point_n but_o treat_v of_o they_o a_o little_a confuse_o as_o suit_v best_o with_o his_o text_n yet_o for_o method_n sake_n i_o choose_v to_o lay_v they_o down_o in_o this_o order_n be_v as_o i_o suppose_v the_o more_o natural_a to_o treat_v of_o the_o most_o material_a point_n before_o i_o come_v to_o those_o that_o seem_v to_o be_v of_o less_o importance_n in_o the_o handle_n then_o of_o this_o important_a piece_n of_o controversy_n i_o shall_v with_o god_n assistance_n observe_v this_o method_n first_o i_o will_v lay_v down_o what_o the_o roman_a catholic_o believe_v as_o of_o faith_n concern_v these_o point_n second_o i_o will_v prove_v their_o tenet_n with_o reason_n scripture_n and_o authority_n of_o father_n though_o of_o this_o there_o shall_v seem_v little_a need_n consider_v that_o it_o have_v be_v so_o often_o already_o do_v be_v it_o not_o that_o my_o business_n be_v with_o the_o simple_a and_o ignorant_a who_o i_o will_v willing_o instruct_v in_o the_o will_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n justify_v the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o all_o other_o protestant_n separation_n from_o their_o ancient_a brethren_n and_o silence_v the_o r._n catholic_o from_o fasten_v the_o imputation_n of_o schism_n and_o heresy_n upon_o they_o but_o how_o far_o this_o be_v from_o what_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v let_v the_o reader_n judge_v when_o the_o mask_n be_v take_v off_o dr._n tillotson_n fundamental_a principle_n than_o be_v this_o whatever_o be_v plain_a and_o evident_a to_o our_o sense_n and_o reason_n be_v to_o be_v believe_v though_o all_o the_o church_n and_o man_n in_o the_o world_n shall_v persuade_v we_o to_o the_o contrary_n thus_o far_o i_o own_o he_o be_v in_o the_o right_a but_o what_o he_o infer_v from_o thence_o namely_o that_o this_o be_v interpretation_n but_o in_o thing_n that_o be_v plain_a and_o evident_a nay_o as_o evident_a as_o that_o twice_o two_o make_v four_o i_o will_v stand_v alone_o say_v he_o against_o all_o the_o world_n his_o own_o word_n be_v thus_o as_o i_o find_v they_o in_o the_o five_o volume_n of_o his_o sermon_n pag._n 16._o in_o all_o matter_n of_o faith_n and_o practice_n which_o be_v plain_a and_o evident_a either_o from_o natural_a reason_n or_o from_o divine_a revelation_n this_o resolution_n seem_v to_o be_v very_o reasonable_a but_o in_o thing_n doubtful_a a_o modest_a man_n and_o every_o man_n have_v reason_n to_o be_v so_o will_v be_v apt_a to_o be_v stagger_v by_o the_o judgement_n of_o a_o very_a wise_a man_n and_o much_o more_o of_o many_o such_o and_o especial_o by_o the_o unanimous_a judgement_n of_o the_o generality_n of_o men._n but_o in_o thing_n plain_o contrary_a to_o the_o evidence_n of_o sense_n or_o reason_n or_o the_o word_n of_o god_n a_o man_n will_v compliment_v no_o man_n or_o number_n of_o man_n nor_o will_v he_o pin_v his_o faith_n upon_o any_o church_n in_o the_o world_n much_o less_o upon_o any_o single_a man_n no_o not_o the_o pope_n no_o though_o there_o be_v never_o so_o many_o probable_a argument_n bring_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o his_o infallibility_n in_o this_o case_n a_o man_n will_v be_v singular_a and_o stand_v alone_o against_o the_o whole_a world_n against_o the_o wrath_n and_o rage_n of_o a_o king_n and_o all_o the_o terror_n of_o his_o fiery_a furnace_n as_o in_o other_o matter_n a_o man_n will_v not_o believe_v all_o the_o learned_a man_n in_o the_o world_n against_o the_o clear_a evidence_n of_o sense_n and_o reason_n if_o all_o the_o great_a mathematician_n of_o all_o age_n archimedes_n and_o euclid_n and_o apollonius_n and_o diophantus_n etc._n etc._n can_v be_v suppose_v to_o meet_v together_o in_o a_o general_n council_n and_o shall_v there_o declare_v in_o the_o most_o solemn_a manner_n and_o give_v it_o under_o their_o hand_n and_o seal_n that_o twice_o two_o do_v not_o make_v four_o but_o five_o this_o will_v not_o move_v i_o in_o the_o least_o to_o be_v of_o their_o mind_n nay_o i_o who_o be_o no_o mathematician_n will_v maintain_v the_o contrary_a and_o will_v persist_v in_o it_o without_o be_v in_o the_o least_o startle_v by_o the_o positive_a opinion_n of_o these_o learned_a man_n and_o will_v most_o certain_o conclude_v that_o they_o be_v either_o all_o of_o they_o out_o of_o their_o wit_n or_o that_o they_o be_v bias_v by_o some_o interest_n or_o other_o and_o sway_v against_o the_o clear_a evidence_n of_o truth_n and_o the_o full_a conviction_n of_o their_o own_o reason_n to_o make_v such_o a_o determination_n as_o this_o they_o may_v indeed_o over-rule_v the_o point_n by_o their_o authority_n but_o in_o my_o inward_a judgement_n i_o shall_v still_o be_v where_o i_o be_v before_o just_o so_o in_o matter_n of_o religion_n if_o any_o church_n though_o with_o never_o and_o evident_a as_o that_o twice_o two_o make_v four_o here_o you_o see_v he_o arraign_v all_o the_o patriack_n primat_n arch-bishop_n bishop_n doctor_n university_n and_o even_o all_o king_n prince_n peer_n magistrate_n together_o with_o the_o common_a people_n of_o all_o country_n and_o province_n of_o the_o west_n as_o also_o the_o greek_a church_n and_o all_o the_o country_n and_o province_n in_o communion_n with_o it_o all_o these_o learned_a and_o pious_a christian_n i_o say_v that_o flourish_v in_o and_o govern_v this_o part_n of_o the_o world_n when_o martin_n luther_n appear_v upon_o the_o theatre_n this_o worthy_a man_n arraign_v for_o fool_n and_o madman_n i_o say_v for_o fool_n and_o madman_n for_o all_o these_o patriarch_n primat_n king_n prince_n etc._n etc._n profess_a in_o those_o day_n to_o be_v guide_v by_o their_o sense_n by_o natural_a reason_n and_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n contain_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o yet_o all_o of_o they_o his_o right_a sense_n ever_o affirm_v that_o white_a be_v black_a or_o black_a white_a or_o that_o any_o of_o our_o sense_n when_o they_o be_v perfect_a do_v not_o give_v irrefragable_a testimony_n of_o their_o proper_a object_n or_o that_o plain_a and_o evident_a text_n of_o scripture_n be_v not_o to_o be_v believe_v these_o monstrous_a absurdity_n the_o dr._n fasten_v upon_o all_o the_o eminent_a and_o learned_a man_n of_o the_o eastern_a and_o western_a church_n which_o flourish_v not_o only_a when_o martin_n luther_n rise_v up_o but_o also_o by_o his_o own_o acknowledgement_n for_o transubstantiation_n as_o aforesaid_a if_o it_o be_v then_o so_o notorious_o contrary_a both_o to_o the_o sense_n and_o reason_n of_o mankind_n as_o the_o dr._n will_v suggest_v all_o those_o man_n whereof_o a_o great_a number_n have_v at_o least_o the_o reputation_n of_o be_v both_o learned_a and_o virtuous_a must_v necessary_o have_v be_v all_o of_o they_o out_o of_o their_o wit_n or_o bias_v
