the_o church_n of_o rome_n may_v be_v decide_v by_o the_o doctrine_n and_o practice_n of_o the_o church_n for_o the_o first_o five_o hundred_o year_n after_o christ_n for_o that_o have_v be_v my_o approve_v of_o their_o ordination_n by_o mere_a presbyter_n because_o i_o once_o say_v it_o may_v be_v vallid_a in_o case_n of_o necessity_n i_o do_v here_o profess_v my_o meaning_n to_o be_v that_o i_o never_o think_v there_o be_v any_o such_o necessity_n in_o the_o church_n of_o england_n as_o to_o warrant_v it_o where_o bless_a be_v god_n for_o it_o there_o be_v so_o many_o bishop_n still_o several_a office_n of_o it_o if_o the_o assembler_n themselves_o that_o first_o lay_v it_o aside_o can_v have_v find_v any_o fault_n in_o it_o their_o modesty_n be_v not_o so_o great_a if_o we_o may_v be_v no_o digression_n if_o the_o time_n will_v permit_v i_o to_o show_v you_o in_o the_o first_o place_n how_o well_o the_o text_n may_v be_v accommodate_v to_o the_o day_n in_o the_o one_o we_o have_v a_o battle_n on_o earth_n that_o bring_v st._n paul_n to_o heaven_n and_o on_o the_o other_o a_o war_n in_o heaven_n which_o be_v reveal_v to_o st._n john_n on_o earth_n michael_n and_o his_o our_o present_a assembly_n at_o this_o place_n i_o shall_v confine_v my_o discourse_n only_o to_o that_o and_o then_o the_o first_o thing_n i_o shall_v observe_v from_o my_o text_n be_v that_o it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o a_o epistle_n send_v by_o the_o apostle_n st._n paul_n to_o timothy_n a_o apostolical_a person_n and_o a_o man_n of_o a_o apostolical_a office_n who_o he_o have_v ordain_v the_o he_o be_v a_o bishop_n that_o be_v a_o person_n of_o a_o apostolical_a office_n and_o such_o a_o one_o who_o care_n as_o well_o as_o duty_n it_o be_v to_o oppose_v and_o beat_v down_o whatever_o be_v only_o by_o his_o pen_n and_o preach_v but_o also_o by_o his_o episcopal_a and_o christian_a conversation_n and_o that_o good_a example_n which_o he_o have_v leave_v we_o for_o our_o imitation_n of_o he_o both_o in_o his_o life_n and_o death_n let_v we_o then_o suppose_v to_o ourselves_o what_o we_o may_v reasonable_o presume_v he_o will_v have_v say_v to_o we_o so_o few_o day_n ago_o or_o let_v we_o but_o imagine_v we_o hear_v his_o hearse_n preach_v now_o to_o we_o what_o he_o will_v then_o have_v teach_v himself_o and_o what_o doctrine_n can_v we_o more_o likely_a expect_v from_o he_o than_o what_o my_o text_n will_v afford_v we_o if_o we_o consider_v it_o with_o those_o circumstance_n i_o have_v already_o mention_v believe_v it_o the_o hearse_n of_o a_o person_n of_o his_o sacred_a order_n and_o exemplary_a piety_n will_v be_v a_o powerful_a preacher_n to_o any_o devout_a soul_n that_o due_o consider_v it_o and_o serious_o lay_v it_o to_o heart_n and_o therefore_o do_v but_o listen_v to_o that_o as_o supply_v what_o be_v so_o proper_a and_o likely_a for_o himself_o to_o have_v speak_v and_o you_o may_v have_v a_o funeral_n sermon_n though_o i_o shall_v hold_v my_o that_o i_o may_v give_v you_o some_o assistance_n for_o your_o meditation_n and_o some_o direction_n for_o your_o practice_n let_v i_o desire_v your_o patience_n and_o attention_n while_o i_o consider_v these_o word_n 1._o first_o as_o i_o find_v they_o in_o my_o text_n lay_v down_o by_o st._n paul_n 2._o as_o they_o may_v very_o fit_o be_v accommodate_v to_o this_o reverend_a bishop_n 3._o as_o they_o may_v be_v apply_v to_o ourselves_o the_o first_o consideration_n will_v represent_v they_o to_o we_o as_o a_o sermon_n the_o second_o as_o a_o funeral_n sermon_n proper_a for_o this_o occasion_n the_o three_o and_o last_o as_o a_o funeral_n sermon_n useful_a to_o ourselves_o 1._o these_o word_n as_o they_o be_v write_v by_o st._n paul_n contain_v in_o they_o these_o two_o general_a part_n answerable_a to_o the_o number_n of_o the_o verse_n wherein_o they_o be_v contain_v 1._o the_o work_n ver_fw-la 7._o i_o have_v fight_v a_o good_a fight_n i_o have_v etc._n etc._n 2._o the_o wage_n ver_fw-la 8._o henceforth_o be_v lay_v up_o for_o i_o a_o crown_n etc._n etc._n 1._o the_o former_a consist_v of_o three_o several_a action_n 1._o fight_v a_o good_a fight_n 2._o finish_v his_o course_n 3._o keep_v the_o faith_n 2._o in_o the_o latter_a we_o have_v 1._o the_o wage_n itself_o 2._o the_o paymaster_n and_o 3._o the_o payment_n 1._o the_o wage_n be_v describe_v from_o his_o office_n the_o judge_n 3._o from_o his_o attribute_n righteous_a judge_n 3._o concern_v the_o payment_n we_o may_v consider_v 1._o the_o title_n we_o have_v to_o it_o in_o the_o word_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d give_v or_o rather_o render_v 2._o the_o time_n whence_o it_o be_v payable_a henceforth_o that_o be_v from_o the_o day_n of_o his_o death_n 3._o the_o time_n when_o it_o will_v be_v actual_o pay_v in_o that_o day_n that_o be_v the_o day_n of_o judgement_n here_o be_v too_o large_a a_o task_n for_o so_o short_a a_o time_n as_o be_v ordinary_a for_o this_o exercise_n and_o therefore_o i_o must_v confine_v my_o discourse_n only_o to_o the_o former_a general_a part_n of_o my_o text_n and_o be_v brief_a in_o that_o too_o more_o will_v not_o be_v necessary_a for_o let_v we_o but_o take_v out_o this_o lesson_n well_o and_o we_o need_v not_o be_v much_o solicitous_a for_o the_o other_o let_v we_o but_o careful_o and_o conscionable_o perform_v the_o work_n and_o we_o may_v safe_o trust_v god_n for_o the_o wage_n and_o in_o this_o point_n that_o i_o may_v speak_v clear_o as_o well_o as_o brief_o i_o shall_v consider_v the_o word_n first_o joint_o together_o and_o then_o several_o apart_o in_o relation_n to_o the_o three_o several_a action_n already_o mention_v 1._o as_o they_o be_v take_v joint_o together_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o as_o very_o often_o elsewhere_o so_o here_o in_o particular_a the_o apostle_n allude_v to_o the_o manner_n of_o perform_v the_o olympic_a game_n among_o the_o grecian_n for_o my_o whole_a text_n be_v a_o continue_a allegory_n take_v from_o those_o sport_n and_o consequent_o all_o the_o principal_a word_n which_o be_v in_o it_o if_o we_o consider_v they_o in_o the_o literal_a sense_n must_v be_v understand_v as_o term_n altogether_o agonistical_a and_o therefore_o as_o in_o those_o olympic_a game_n there_o be_v several_a champion_n that_o contend_v in_o fight_v or_o cuff_v or_o wrestle_v or_o drive_v of_o chariot_n in_o such_o a_o place_n of_o ground_n or_o upon_o such_o a_o stage_n for_o some_o honorarie_a or_o reward_n as_o a_o crown_n of_o olive_n or_o laurel_n or_o the_o like_a before_o such_o a_o person_n who_o sit_v there_o to_o judge_v of_o the_o sport_n and_o crown_v he_o that_o get_v the_o victory_n so_o here_o in_o my_o text_n 1._o the_o agonist_n or_o champion_n be_v st._n paul_n 2._o the_o stadium_n
weighty_a office_n of_o a_o bishop_n almost_o 44._o year_n in_o which_o respect_n i_o think_v he_o have_v not_o leave_v his_o equal_a behind_o he_o in_o europe_n but_o especial_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v hardly_o a_o day_n in_o those_o year_n nor_o scarce_o a_o hour_n in_o that_o day_n whereof_o some_o good_a account_n may_v not_o be_v give_v if_o i_o shall_v go_v about_o such_o a_o thing_n and_o therefore_o see_v i_o must_v of_o necessity_n omit_v much_o that_o may_v be_v say_v in_o this_o case_n according_a to_o custom_n i_o shall_v confine_v my_o discourse_n to_o that_o which_o can_v be_v omit_v without_o violate_v my_o text_n and_o prevaricate_a in_o a_o good_a cause_n and_o for_o the_o rest_n if_o god_n permit_v i_o may_v have_v occasion_n hereafter_o to_o give_v the_o world_n a_o account_n in_o some_o brief_a narrative_a of_o his_o life_n you_o have_v see_v the_o copy_n already_o in_o st._n paul_n i_o shall_v now_o endeavour_v to_o show_v you_o how_o well_o it_o be_v transcribe_v by_o this_o reverend_a bishop_n who_o be_v as_o great_a a_o admirer_n of_o he_o as_o i_o have_v know_v though_o indeed_o no_o man_n can_v sufficient_o admire_v he_o it_o be_v this_o apostle_n exhortation_n to_o we_o all_o 11.1_o to_o be_v follower_n of_o he_o as_o he_o be_v of_o christ_n and_o it_o be_v the_o special_a care_n and_o endeavour_v of_o this_o pious_a bishop_n to_o yield_v obedience_n to_o that_o exhortation_n we_o have_v already_o see_v as_o far_o as_o my_o text_n lead_v i_o to_o it_o how_o well_o this_o apostle_n follow_v christ_n it_o now_o remain_v i_o shall_v show_v you_o how_o well_o this_o bishop_n follow_v the_o apostle_n in_o those_o particular_n i_o have_v already_o insist_v upon_o and_o here_o in_o the_o first_o place_n if_o i_o will_v allow_v myself_o that_o liberty_n of_o wander_v from_o my_o text_n which_o too_o many_o other_o assume_v in_o the_o contrary_a cause_n i_o can_v bring_v my_o first_o parallel_n from_o their_o office_n in_o the_o church_n the_o one_o a_o apostle_n the_o other_o a_o bishop_n and_o show_v you_o even_o from_o st._n hierome_n himself_o who_o authority_n be_v so_o much_o urge_v against_o bishop_n how_o little_a difference_n there_o be_v between_o they_o see_v as_o that_o father_n tell_v we_o etc._n bishop_n succeed_v the_o apostle_n in_o the_o church_n as_o a_o son_n do_v his_o father_n in_o his_o inheritance_n and_o consequent_o that_o etc._n bishop_n do_v now_o sustain_v the_o place_n of_o the_o apostle_n or_o to_o come_v close_o to_o my_o text_n that_o a_o etc._n bishop_n be_v to_o we_o instead_o of_o st._n paul_n but_o this_o be_v a_o subject_n too_o large_a for_o this_o time_n and_o neither_o proper_a for_o the_o place_n nor_o suitable_a with_o the_o text_n and_o my_o present_a intention_n for_o it_o be_v their_o action_n and_o suffering_n their_o fight_n and_o their_o course_n and_o not_o their_o place_n or_o their_o office_n which_o my_o text_n lead_v i_o to_o to_o make_v up_o the_o parallel_n and_o even_o in_o that_o i_o must_v stint_v my_o discourse_n from_o those_o limit_n which_o i_o first_o intend_v when_o i_o first_o observe_v in_o st._n paul_n fight_n the_o substance_n and_o the_o quality_n of_o it_o branch_a the_o former_a into_o his_o action_n and_o suffering_n and_o the_o latter_a into_o the_o justness_n of_o his_o cause_n and_o justifiableness_n of_o the_o way_n of_o manage_v it_o and_o that_o again_o both_o as_o a_o apostle_n and_o as_o a_o christian_a my_o intention_n be_v to_o have_v show_v you_o in_o the_o parallel_n what_o this_o reverend_a bishop_n do_v and_o what_o he_o suffer_v both_o as_o a_o bishop_n and_o as_o a_o christian_a and_o again_o how_o good_a his_o cause_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o god_n and_o his_o church_n and_o how_o christianly_o it_o be_v manage_v without_o run_v either_o to_o the_o 1.2_o god_n of_o ekron_n or_o to_o 28.8_o the_o witch_n of_o endor_n without_o 3.12_o worship_v the_o golden_a image_n or_o vail_v the_o bonnet_n to_o 8.33_o baal_n berith_n without_o commit_v murder_n in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n or_o shut_v up_o church_n for_o the_o propagation_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o then_o in_o the_o second_o place_n my_o intention_n be_v to_o have_v extend_v the_o parallel_n to_o his_o imitation_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o his_o life_n in_o run_v with_o he_o the_o same_o race_n that_o be_v set_v before_o they_o both_o and_o then_o last_o of_o all_o to_o have_v show_v you_o how_o well_o he_o keep_v the_o faith_n till_o his_o last_o gasp_n both_o in_o his_o fight_n and_o run_v and_o i_o hope_v i_o shall_v say_v something_o to_o all_o these_o particular_n though_o neither_o so_o large_o nor_o so_o methodical_o as_o i_o once_o intend_v the_o first_o thing_n mention_v by_o the_o apostle_n here_o in_o my_o text_n be_v the_o good_a fight_n which_o he_o fight_v and_o the_o like_a according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o his_o ability_n be_v perform_v by_o this_o bishop_n 1._o his_o whole_a life_n be_v a_o fight_n even_o as_o he_o be_v a_o man_n 7.1_o militia_n est_fw-la hominis_fw-la vita_fw-la super_fw-la terram_fw-la but_o a_o far_o great_a against_o which_o we_o strive_v the_o great_a be_v the_o fight_n and_o the_o victory_n the_o more_o glorious_a and_o so_o the_o case_n be_v with_o he_o consider_v as_o a_o christian_a and_o so_o it_o still_o be_v and_o ever_o will_v be_v with_o we_o for_o our_o enemy_n in_o this_o battle_n be_v the_o devil_n the_o world_n and_o the_o flesh_n and_o all_o of_o they_o complete_o arm_v the_o world_n with_o power_n the_o flesh_n with_o treachery_n and_o the_o devil_n with_o subtlety_n yet_o such_o have_v be_v the_o power_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o this_o great_a champion_n that_o he_o have_v get_v a_o clear_a conquest_n over_o they_o all_o and_o leave_v we_o his_o good_a example_n both_o for_o our_o encouragement_n and_o imitation_n 2._o but_o these_o enemy_n be_v common_a to_o other_o with_o he_o though_o seldom_o subdue_v by_o any_o so_o well_o as_o by_o he_o i_o shall_v rather_o divert_v my_o discourse_n to_o the_o other_o branch_n which_o i_o propose_v and_o show_v you_o what_o a_o hot_a encounter_n he_o do_v undergo_v in_o respect_n of_o his_o office_n in_o the_o church_n as_o a_o bishop_n and_o that_o both_o in_o what_o he_o do_v and_o what_o he_o suffer_v and_o in_o this_o since_o the_o quarrel_n be_v improve_v against_o all_o the_o other_o office_n of_o ministry_n in_o the_o church_n which_o at_o first_o be_v commence_v only_o against_o the_o bishop_n nay_o the_o by_o those_o that_o will_v allow_v of_o no_o church_n but_o of_o their_o own_o gather_n which_o be_v a_o thing_n of_o more_o dangerous_a consequence_n than_o most_o be_v aware_a of_o i_o pray_v god_n be_v presume_v to_o have_v take_v out_o those_o inferior_a lesson_n which_o be_v indispensable_o require_v in_o every_o bishop_n 3._o and_o yet_o because_o i_o must_v of_o necessity_n use_v some_o method_n in_o what_o i_o have_v to_o say_v and_o can_v have_v a_o better_a than_o what_o be_v there_o lay_v down_o by_o this_o great_a apostle_n athanas_n and_o be_v take_v notice_n of_o by_o s._n gregory_n nazianzen_n in_o the_o like_a case_n though_o i_o will_v not_o enlarge_v my_o discourse_n to_o a_o commentary_n upon_o the_o place_n i_o shall_v use_v the_o particular_n of_o that_o text_n especial_o the_o chief_a of_o they_o for_o the_o head_n of_o my_o discourse_n though_o not_o in_o the_o same_o method_n and_o order_n and_o when_o i_o have_v thus_o weigh_v he_o in_o the_o balance_n and_o by_o the_o shekel_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n and_o find_v he_o full_a weight_n i_o shall_v add_v a_o word_n or_o two_o concern_v the_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d or_o superpondium_fw-la for_o as_o the_o former_a will_v show_v he_o want_v nothing_o that_o be_v indispensable_o require_v in_o a_o bishop_n so_o will_v the_o late_a that_o he_o have_v superad_v so_o much_o to_o it_o as_o we_o may_v listen_v he_o just_o in_o the_o rank_n of_o very_o good_a bishop_n and_o i_o shall_v make_v out_o all_o this_o as_o near_o as_o i_o can_v by_o particular_a instance_n that_o neither_o his_o enemy_n may_v complain_v that_o i_o flatter_v his_o memory_n nor_o his_o friend_n that_o i_o obtrude_v my_o own_o fancy_n and_o conjecture_n upon_o the_o world_n in_o stead_n of_o real_a truth_n 4._o for_o the_o first_o qualification_n i_o shall_v have_v no_o occasion_n to_o give_v offence_n to_o any_o because_o it_o be_v negative_o set_v down_o a_o bishop_n must_v be_v blameless_a so_o that_o whosoever_o shall_v accuse_v he_o upon_o this_o first_o branch_n be_v bind_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n to_o make_v his_o charge_n good_a against_o he_o and_o if_o we_o take_v in_o likewise_o the_o custom_n of_o the_o roman_n that_o the_o person_n accuse_v shall_v have_v the_o accuser_n face_n to_o face_n 25.15_o and_o licenee_n to_o answer_v for_o himself_o concern_v the_o crime_n lay_v against_o he_o i_o shall_v still_o have_v the_o less_o cause_n to_o be_v solicitous_a in_o this_o business_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o his_o write_n whereof_o he_o have_v be_v accuse_v wherein_o he_o have_v not_o clear_v himself_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o impartial_a reader_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o new_a charge_n to_o be_v lay_v against_o he_o the_o only_a competent_a tribunal_n will_v be_v that_o of_o the_o righteous_a judge_n of_o all_o the_o earth_n at_o the_o general_a assize_n of_o the_o world_n where_o alone_o the_o party_n may_v appear_v face_n to_o face_n and_o as_o for_o his_o life_n he_o be_v in_o that_o by_o the_o tacit_n consent_n of_o his_o great_a enemy_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 2_o irreprehensible_a or_o even_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d tell_v we_o and_o in_o that_o rank_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o we_o may_v reckon_v this_o good_a bishop_n 5._o for_o he_o have_v improve_v this_o qualification_n to_o so_o high_a a_o pitch_n as_o to_o make_v it_o also_o take_v in_o another_o and_o make_v he_o have_v a_o good_a report_n of_o they_o which_o be_v without_o 3.7_o
