not_o a_o little_a thing_n you_o may_v please_v yourselves_o by_o it_o but_o the_o lord_n be_v wondrous_o offend_v with_o those_o that_o break_v the_o peace_n we_o must_v fellow_n peace_n with_o all_o man_n contention_n to_o avoid_v strife_n &_o contention_n prosecute_v it_o that_o be_v get_v the_o same_o disposition_n to_o peace_n as_o man_n have_v to_o persecute_v religion_n we_o must_v have_v peace_n with_o all_o man_n much_o more_o with_o the_o brethren_n this_o be_v a_o time_n that_o we_o live_v in_o when_o man_n take_v toy_n in_o their_o head_n right_a or_o wrong_n indifferent_a or_o unlawful_a and_o they_o look_v not_o to_o the_o issue_n of_o those_o toy_n for_o ought_v thou_o know_v it_o may_v overthrow_v the_o nation_n and_o divide_v the_o church_n and_o rend_v the_o saint_n and_o thou_o care_v not_o for_o peace_n if_o i_o love_v christ_n i_o must_v keep_v his_o commandment_n even_o in_o thing_n command_v we_o must_v respect_v peace_n much_o more_o in_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o absolute_o command_v therefore_o we_o see_v in_o 1._o cor._n 14.33_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o stir_n and_o contention_n about_o prophesy_v and_o pray_v and_o speak_v with_o strange_a tongue_n mark_v the_o counsel_n that_o the_o apostle_n give_v the_o spirit_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o prophet_n for_o god_n be_v not_o the_o author_n of_o confusion_n but_o of_o peace_n as_o it_o be_v in_o all_o the_o church_n of_o the_o saint_n you_o shall_v find_v in_o the_o margin_n god_n be_v not_o the_o author_n of_o tumult_n or_o unquiet_a but_o of_o peace_n one_o will_v say_v i_o have_v god_n will_v and_o command_v and_o i_o do_v that_o which_o be_v right_a say_v he_o that_o speak_v in_o a_o unknown_a tongue_n and_o another_o prophesy_v and_o another_o sing_v and_o every_o one_o thought_n he_o do_v well_o you_o be_v mistake_v say_v the_o apostle_n god_n be_v not_o the_o author_n of_o unquiet_a that_o be_v a_o disposition_n that_o will_v hurry_v you_o to_o the_o confusion_n of_o the_o church_n therefore_o it_o be_v not_o of_o god_n
to_o our_o brethren_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v in_o darkness_n and_o every_o one_o grope_v and_o go_v he_o know_v not_o where_o let_v i_o give_v you_o another_o answer_n you_o say_v this_o be_v the_o way_n to_o confusion_n and_o who_o shall_v judge_v of_o this_o must_v every_o particular_a man_n mistake_v i_o not_o wilful_o i_o do_v not_o say_v that_o every_o man_n be_v to_o determine_v family_n the_o thing_n that_o belong_v to_o they_o and_o particular_a person_n those_o that_o belong_v to_o they_o as_o for_o instance_n magistrate_n 1._o by_o magistrate_n concern_v magistrate_n i_o speak_v not_o at_o all_o what_o his_o power_n be_v in_o lawful_a thing_n that_o god_n have_v command_v but_o in_o thing_n undetermined_a by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n those_o thing_n that_o relate_v real_o and_o true_o to_o his_o state_n and_o nation_n he_o have_v power_n to_o determine_v as_o for_o instance_n worship_n for_o the_o time_n of_o meeting_n to_o worship_n suppose_v in_o this_o city_n the_o saint_n do_v use_v to_o meet_v at_o twelve_o or_o one_o of_o the_o clock_n in_o the_o night_n general_o as_o we_o do_v in_o the_o day_n and_o suppose_v that_o thereupon_o there_o be_v divers_a insurrection_n in_o the_o city_n that_o do_v procure_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o trouble_n and_o danger_n to_o the_o city_n suppose_v that_o this_o be_v real_a for_o people_n must_v not_o talk_v o_o this_o will_v destroy_v the_o kingdom_n and_o the_o parliament_n when_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n for_o aught_o i_o know_v the_o magistrate_n may_v come_v and_o determine_v the_o case_n and_o make_v they_o meet_v at_o twelve_o of_o the_o clock_n in_o the_o day_n and_o not_o in_o the_o night_n if_o it_o be_v prejudicial_a to_o his_o kingdom_n for_o take_v this_o general_a rule_n the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o itself_o be_v not_o real_o prejudicial_a to_o magistracy_n or_o thus_o suppose_v in_o this_o country_n or_o in_o a_o cold_a that_o people_n do_v go_v and_o baptize_v in_o river_n baptise_v manner_n of_o baptise_v whereas_o this_o be_v not_o a_o absolute_a command_n but_o only_o the_o use_n of_o water_n lay_v down_o that_o &_o by_o that_o mean_v divers_a subject_n die_v and_o lose_v their_o life_n suppose_v this_o be_v real_a herein_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v the_o magistrate_n may_v determine_v a_o course_n and_o take_v another_o way_n because_o herein_o be_v prejudice_n to_o his_o subject_n or_o in_o a_o plain_a case_n suppose_v in_o this_o city_n there_o be_v abundance_n of_o godly_a people_n meeting_n place_n of_o meeting_n and_o there_o be_v divers_a minister_n to_o preach_v and_o the_o magistrate_n be_v ready_a to_o set_v it_o up_o the_o question_n be_v where_o we_o shall_v find_v place_n fit_a to_o distribute_v those_o people_n every_o one_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n christ_n jesus_n have_v not_o command_v this_o house_n or_o yonder_o or_o any_o house_n more_o than_o another_o but_o now_o there_o be_v house_n fit_o seat_v and_o large_a about_o the_o city_n the_o minister_n and_o magistrate_n know_v the_o indifferency_n of_o they_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v the_o magistrate_n may_v determine_v those_o place_n for_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n and_o other_o exercise_n the_o reason_n be_v this_o because_o in_o such_o multitude_n as_o be_v in_o the_o city_n if_o they_o shall_v meet_v confuse_o in_o this_o and_o that_o and_o the_o other_o house_n there_o may_v be_v abundance_n of_o sedition_n and_o tumult_n under_o that_o pretence_n that_o no_o magistrate_n be_v able_a to_o rule_v the_o city_n i_o speak_v it_o not_o that_o you_o may_v persecute_v godly_a people_n or_o that_o it_o be_v altogether_o unlawful_a for_o the_o saint_n to_o meet_v in_o another_o place_n but_o he_o may_v do_v it_o in_o relation_n to_o his_o kingdom_n and_o state_n as_o thus_o lest_o there_o be_v disturbance_n in_o my_o city_n you_o shall_v meet_v respective_o in_o such_o place_n and_o so_o he_o may_v distribute_v they_o such_o kind_n of_o circumstance_n they_o may_v determine_v so_o the_o church_n church_n 2._o by_o the_o church_n those_o thing_n that_o be_v among_o they_o that_o relate_v to_o the_o church_n they_o may_v determine_v so_o master_n in_o family_n may_v determine_v thing_n there_o as_o for_o instance_n whether_o he_o will_v repeat_v the_o sermon_n or_o read_v a_o chapter_n at_o night_n or_o in_o the_o morning_n god_n have_v not_o determine_v the_o one_o family_n 3._o master_n of_o family_n or_o the_o other_o or_o whether_o he_o will_v expound_v a_o chapter_n in_o the_o morning_n or_o in_o the_o evening_n if_o he_o have_v not_o time_n for_o both_o and_o so_o action_n that_o concern_v a_o man_n own_o person_n that_o relate_v not_o to_o the_o church_n or_o the_o family_n or_o state_n person_n 4._o particular_a person_n the_o saint_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n may_v determine_v thing_n personal_o to_o themselves_o you_o understand_v that_o determine_v caution_n for_o magistrate_n and_o church_n in_o determine_v but_o to_o clear_v this_o a_o little_a i_o say_v that_o magistrate_n may_v determine_v these_o circumstance_n there_o be_v these_o six_o caution_n for_o church_n and_o magistrate_n in_o determine_v of_o thing_n that_o god_n have_v not_o determine_v which_o they_o shall_v do_v well_o to_o observe_v as_o first_o they_o may_v determine_v in_o necessary_a indifferent_a thing_n as_o thus_o for_o instance_n thing_n 1._o it_o must_v be_v in_o necessary_a indifferent_a thing_n there_o be_v a_o great_a strife_n among_o we_o before_o about_o wear_v of_o the_o surplice_n about_o wear_v of_o white_a or_o black_a here_o the_o magistrate_n nor_o the_o church_n can_v determine_v because_o it_o be_v not_o a_o necessary_a indifferent_a thing_n for_o there_o be_v colour_n enough_o beside_o between_o they_o but_o if_o it_o be_v this_o whether_o i_o shall_v go_v naked_a or_o clothe_v if_o it_o relate_v to_o the_o kingdom_n the_o magistrate_n may_v do_v it_o if_o to_o the_o church_n the_o minister_n may_v determine_v it_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o we_o blame_v the_o bishop_n they_o say_v they_o be_v indifferent_a thing_n the_o surplice_n be_v indifferent_a if_o it_o be_v a_o necessary_a indifferent_a thing_n they_o may_v urge_v it_o but_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n of_o it_o therefore_o man_n must_v observe_v that_o rule_n or_o else_o they_o will_v run_v endlesse_o and_o under_o the_o name_n of_o indifferent_a do_v any_o thing_n kingdom_n 2._o it_o must_v relate_v to_o the_o kingdom_n second_o observe_v this_o caveat_n see_v that_o it_o relate_v to_o the_o kingdom_n for_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v a_o magistrate_n be_v not_o a_o spiritual_a officer_n as_o a_o magistrate_n but_o a_o thing_n make_v by_o the_o wisdom_n and_o providence_n of_o god_n to_o rule_v over_o the_o outward_a thing_n of_o the_o world_n so_o be_v emperor_n and_o king_n etc._n etc._n and_o for_o a_o magistrate_n to_o intrude_v into_o the_o church_n that_o he_o will_v determine_v all_o business_n what_o they_o shall_v do_v and_o what_o they_o shall_v pray_v i_o think_v this_o be_v not_o right_a but_o if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n that_o relate_v to_o his_o kingdom_n and_o nation_n therein_o he_o must_v look_v and_o he_o may_v determine_v over_o a_o saint_n and_o over_o a_o church_n man_n 3._o the_o srs._n must_v be_v deal_v with_o as_o rational_a man_n then_o three_o whether_o it_o be_v magistrate_n or_o church_n that_o go_v about_o to_o determine_v such_o thing_n they_o must_v deal_v with_o the_o saint_n as_o rational_a man_n and_o not_o make_v their_o will_n a_o law_n and_o tell_v they_o this_o we_o will_v have_v do_v and_o give_v no_o reason_n or_o rule_v no_o the_o saint_n must_v be_v deal_v with_o as_o man_n therefore_o they_o must_v give_v they_o some_o rule_n and_o reason_n for_o what_o they_o do_v they_o do_v not_o by_o mere_a power_n determine_v of_o thing_n so_o proper_o as_o be_v many_o and_o wise_a they_o be_v put_v to_o inform_v the_o people_n what_o be_v right_a therefore_o that_o lordlinesse_n and_o tyranny_n and_o domineer_a over_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v not_o fit_a future_a 4._o take_v heed_n of_o make_v law_n for_o the_o future_a then_o fourthly_a church_n and_o saint_n and_o magistrate_n in_o determine_v of_o indifferent_a thing_n must_v
to_o one_o that_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o never_o will_v be_v we_o strive_v about_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v a_o great_a way_n off_o it_o be_v a_o hundred_o to_o one_o if_o any_o of_o we_o ever_o come_v to_o the_o practice_n of_o that_o we_o strive_v for_o we_o all_o agree_v there_o shall_v be_v a_o company_n of_o saint_n a_o company_n of_o visible_a believer_n and_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v power_n in_o the_o church_n to_o order_n and_o govern_v thing_n that_o the_o church_n shall_v determine_v as_o it_o do_v in_o jerusalem_n let_v we_o go_v so_o far_o let_v we_o have_v church_n reform_v and_o set_v the_o power_n in_o they_o and_o let_v they_o rule_v &_o then_o if_o there_o be_v occasion_n for_o people_n to_o appeal_v god_n will_v either_o open_a man_n eye_n or_o else_o in_o expediency_n as_o i_o shall_v show_v by_o and_o by_o they_o shall_v be_v direct_v but_o we_o strive_v as_o i_o tell_v you_o as_o if_o you_o and_o i_o shall_v strive_v who_o shall_v enter_v into_o the_o gate_n of_o venice_n first_o and_o we_o know_v not_o whether_o either_o of_o we_o shall_v come_v there_o we_o strive_v about_o to_o morrow_n we_o have_v present_a misery_n enough_o we_o need_v not_o strive_v about_o thing_n that_o be_v to_o come_v ten_o year_n hence_o and_o it_o may_v be_v will_v never_o come_v we_o be_v fool_n be_v we_o sure_a that_o the_o kingdom_n will_v stand_v or_o that_o we_o shall_v have_v our_o life_n and_o yet_o we_o go_v and_o strive_v about_o a_o nick_n that_o be_v the_o far_a of_o all_o thing_n whereas_o as_o for_o outward_a thing_n sufficient_a for_o the_o day_n be_v the_o grief_n thereof_o go_v on_o in_o love_n and_o when_o it_o come_v to_o that_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o light_n this_o be_v the_o great_a indiscretion_n in_o england_n to_o strive_v about_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v never_o like_a to_o come_v to_o pass_v have_v 4._o because_o neither_o side_n can_v prove_v what_o they_o will_v have_v four_o and_o last_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o strife_n because_o as_o the_o presbyterial_a godly_a man_n they_o can_v nor_o will_v prove_v such_o a_o thing_n to_o be_v a_o absolute_a rule_n for_o all_o the_o church_n and_o for_o all_o saint_n say_v there_o be_v such_o a_o rule_n in_o act_n 15._o do_v it_o follow_v that_o it_o be_v a_o rule_n for_o all_o church_n and_o for_o all_o saint_n why_o do_v we_o not_o also_o sell_v our_o land_n and_o give_v to_o our_o brethren_n let_v they_o but_o show_v i_o a_o ground_n why_o that_o example_n shall_v be_v make_v a_o absolute_a rule_n therefore_o as_o a_o man_n can_v show_v nor_o never_o will_v a_o absolute_a rule_n to_o bind_v all_o the_o saint_n through_o the_o world_n to_o do_v so_o so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o independent_o can_v prove_v but_o it_o may_v be_v expedient_a in_o divers_a case_n therefore_o the_o one_o seem_v to_o act_v necessary_o the_o other_o probable_o to_o be_v expedient_a by_o right_a reason_n and_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n if_o a_o church_n can_v agree_v among_o themselves_o and_o what_o cause_n of_o strife_n be_v there_o in_o this_o suppose_v one_o shall_v say_v to_o i_o come_v out_o of_o that_o house_n or_o else_o you_o will_v be_v destroy_v the_o house_n will_v fall_v upon_o you_o i_o believe_v not_o that_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n but_o i_o think_v it_o be_v expedient_a because_o the_o house_n be_v old_a he_o think_v it_o be_v of_o necessity_n and_o i_o think_v it_o expedient_a be_v there_o any_o cause_n of_o strife_n in_o this_o so_o put_v these_o together_o and_o see_v how_o we_o be_v delude_v by_o the_o devil_n and_o our_o own_o heart_n to_o make_v strife_n about_o a_o thing_n that_o may_v never_o be_v therefore_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n for_o it_o but_o that_o i_o may_v satisfy_v you_o a_o little_a more_o you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v there_o no_o more_o difference_n between_o presbyterian_o and_o independent_o i_o have_v hear_v that_o there_o be_v more_o difference_n between_o they_o than_o between_o the_o cavaleir_n and_o the_o other_o party_n that_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o cut_v one_o another_o throat_n if_o there_o be_v no_o more_o between_o they_o how_o come_v this_o contention_n among_o they_o i_o think_v of_o all_o the_o contention_n that_o ever_o be_v among_o the_o saint_n from_o christ_n time_n till_o now_o there_o be_v never_o such_o a_o mystery_n in_o any_o contention_n as_o there_o be_v in_o this_o and_o but_o that_o i_o will_v not_o take_v up_o so_o much_o time_n i_o can_v go_v near_o to_o open_v this_o mystery_n how_o the_o devil_n and_o our_o own_o heart_n have_v get_v the_o strange_a mystery_n to_o set_v the_o saint_n together_o by_o the_o ear_n that_o ever_o be_v but_o i_o can_v stay_v upon_o that_o but_o if_o you_o ask_v i_o how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v you_o know_v a_o little_a spark_n will_v bring_v a_o great_a flame_n a_o little_a contention_n be_v as_o the_o let_v out_o of_o water_n it_o be_v no_o wonder_n it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o contention_n to_o multiply_v as_o it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o fire_n to_o grow_v big_a it_o come_v from_o the_o devil_n and_o our_o own_o heart_n from_o the_o present_a contention_n from_o if_o you_o ask_v i_o how_o it_o come_v from_o man_n i_o say_v it_o come_v from_o five_o sort_n of_o people_n and_o it_o may_v be_v you_o and_o i_o and_o the_o most_o of_o we_o have_v a_o hand_n in_o blow_v this_o fire_n the_o lord_n show_v it_o to_o we_o all_o that_o we_o may_v labour_v to_o be_v peace_n maker_n and_o so_o be_v bless_v christian_n weak_a christian_n the_o first_o sort_n of_o people_n be_v weak_a carnal_a christian_n there_o may_v be_v those_o that_o be_v call_v independent_o that_o be_v carnal_a i_o mean_v not_o carnal_a as_o though_o they_o have_v no_o grace_n but_o in_o the_o apostle_n sense_n 1_o cor_fw-la 3._o be_v you_o not_o carnal_a that_o be_v those_o that_o have_v but_o a_o little_a grace_n and_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o rashness_n and_o peevishness_n and_o giddiness_n and_o pettishnesse_n and_o censoriousnesse_n they_o be_v people_n that_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o zeal_n many_o of_o they_o but_o it_o be_v without_o knowledge_n without_o wisdom_n to_o manage_v it_o they_o see_v part_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n but_o not_o all_o as_o the_o sun_n shine_v on_o one_o part_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o the_o other_o be_v dark_a and_o in_o that_o part_n they_o see_v the_o substance_n but_o eye_v not_o the_o circumstance_n they_o care_v not_o if_o all_o the_o world_n be_v against_o they_o or_o who_o they_o edify_v or_o who_o they_o destroy_v if_o they_o have_v the_o command_n of_o christ_n they_o will_v do_v it_o and_o these_o people_n though_o they_o be_v godly_a as_o a_o godly_a man_n say_v of_o they_o there_o be_v a_o new_a light_n come_v into_o their_o soul_n but_o they_o have_v not_o grace_v to_o manage_v it_o and_o so_o they_o go_v headlong_o it_o be_v a_o good_a light_n but_o they_o have_v not_o grace_v to_o manage_v it_o and_o that_o light_n by_o reason_n of_o their_o corruption_n and_o temptation_n kindle_v contention_n in_o the_o church_n reprove_v they_o must_v be_v sharp_o reprove_v therefore_o if_o we_o will_v have_v peace_n which_o be_v our_o great_a desire_n we_o must_v admonish_v and_o rebuke_v they_o sharp_o they_o be_v full_a of_o censoriousnesse_n and_o pettishnes_n and_o have_v many_o harsh_a and_o unseemly_a word_n these_o must_v be_v reprove_v and_o there_o must_v be_v a_o course_n take_v to_o bind_v up_o their_o spirit_n or_o else_o it_o will_v be_v hard_a to_o have_v peace_n then_o second_o there_o be_v another_o generation_n of_o people_n that_o exceed_o blow_v up_o the_o fire_n presbyterian_o carnal_a presbyterian_o that_o be_v contrary_a to_o those_o that_o be_v a_o generation_n of_o carnal_a man_n that_o have_v nothing_o of_o god_n in_o they_o that_o usurp_v to_o themselves_o common_o the_o name_n of_o presbytery_n they_o will_v be_v call_v though_o false_o presbyterian_o though_o presbytery_n be_v a_o honourable_a word_n and_o it_o be_v a_o honourable_a thing_n and_o they_o be_v honourable_a man_n that_o hold_v it_o and_o godly_a man_n but_o many_o that_o will_v be_v call_v presbyterian_o take_v a_o good_a name_n &_o misapply_v it_o to_o themselves_o they_o be_v wolf_n in_o sheep_n clothing_n they_o talk_v of_o reform_v the_o church_n and_o yet_o they_o will_v set_v the_o saint_n as_o so_o many_o tiger_n together_o by_o the_o ear_n i_o mean_v not_o by_o these_o any_o godly_a man_n but_o you_o may_v know_v they_o if_o you_o take_v notice_n of_o their_o person_n usual_o they_o be_v the_o prelatical_a man_n such_o as_o be_v surrogate_v to_o bishop_n
&_o that_o desire_n to_o do_v good_a and_o it_o may_v be_v out_o of_o a_o conceit_n or_o rather_o with_o reverence_n out_o of_o conscience_n of_o the_o pulpit_n or_o the_o place_n we_o preach_v in_o have_v hide_v their_o talent_n and_o have_v lay_v down_o their_o work_n and_o keep_v in_o their_o gift_n and_o become_v unprofitable_a and_o how_o many_o hundred_o christian_n be_v there_o that_o be_v godly_a and_o holy_a people_n out_o of_o conscience_n of_o the_o call_n of_o the_o minister_n or_o the_o house_n that_o they_o meet_v in_o have_v with_o the_o grief_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o many_o a_o heavy_a heart_n shut_v themselves_o in_o a_o hole_n four_o or_o five_o woman_n together_o and_o lose_v the_o use_n of_o those_o bless_a gift_n if_o they_o have_v study_v whether_o it_o have_v be_v convenient_a it_o have_v be_v worth_a the_o while_n to_o dispute_v but_o god_n have_v make_v no_o law_n for_o preach_v in_o a_o pulpit_n or_o in_o a_o pew_n or_o in_o a_o house_n of_o stone_n or_o not_o of_o stone_n but_o make_v a_o absolute_a law_n that_o it_o must_v hold_v in_o all_o case_n they_o fall_v into_o these_o snare_n that_o be_v grievous_a i_o speak_v not_o this_o that_o you_o shall_v persecute_v such_o for_o they_o be_v godly_a people_n and_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n they_o have_v tender_a conscience_n i_o mean_v not_o so_o nor_o do_v i_o persuade_v they_o to_o do_v thing_n
