the_o romanist_n assert_v the_o first_o the_o protestant_n the_o second_v but_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n between_o these_o two_o plea_n that_o if_o we_o can_v make_v good_a our_o charge_n against_o they_o that_o they_o have_v actual_o err_v this_o be_v a_o direct_a and_o positive_a proof_n against_o their_o infallibility_n but_o though_o it_o be_v as_o certain_o true_a that_o a_o infallible_a church_n can_v and_o have_v not_o err_v yet_o whatever_o proof_n they_o bring_v of_o the_o church_n

for_o till_o this_o be_v remove_v it_o be_v a_o effectual_a bar_n to_o all_o other_o proof_n of_o infallibility_n and_o thus_o their_o compendious_a way_n of_o make_v convert_v and_o confute_v heretic_n be_v nothing_o but_o sophistry_n and_o a_o cheat_n and_o if_o man_n will_v be_v sincere_a and_o honest_a convert_v they_o must_v not_o flatter_v themselves_o with_o a_o opinion_n of_o the_o church_n infallibility_n but_o must_v examine_v the_o particular_a dispute_n between_o we_o and_o be_v thorough_o satisfy_v that_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v not_o err_v before_o they_o embrace_v her_o communion_n 2._o for_o if_o it_o appear_v that_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v be_v guilty_a of_o error_n or_o apostasy_n this_o be_v a_o certain_a demonstration_n that_o either_o those_o scripture-promise_n which_o she_o allege_v do_v not_o belong_v to_o she_o or_o do_v not_o signify_v what_o she_o bring_v they_o for_o for_o whatever_o christ_n promise_v he_o will_v certain_o those_o text_n be_v by_o which_o they_o prove_v that_o she_o can_v err_v if_o i_o can_v prove_v by_o plain_a text_n that_o she_o have_v err_v this_o shall_v teach_v i_o how_o to_o expound_v those_o obscure_a text_n from_o which_o some_o will_v prove_v that_o she_o can_v err._n indeed_o it_o be_v very_o happy_a that_o no_o man_n believe_v christ_n have_v promise_v infallibility_n to_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n but_o those_o who_o believe_v that_o she_o have_v not_o err_v for_o if_o they_o do_v it_o will_v be_v a_o very_a dangerous_a state_n of_o temptation_n and_o a_o very_a ill_a argument_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o infidel_n against_o christianity_n for_o they_o will_v rather_o charge_v christ_n with_o a_o breach_n of_o his_o promise_n which_o will_v destroy_v his_o authority_n than_o believe_v contrary_a to_o the_o plain_a and_o most_o convince_a evidence_n that_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v not_o err_v and_o indeed_o it_o will_v stagger_v the_o faith_n of_o a_o christian_a if_o the_o pretend_a promise_n of_o infallibility_n to_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v as_o plain_a as_o her_o error_n be_v for_o what_o shall_v any_o man_n do_v in_o that_o case_n believe_v that_o she_o have_v not_o err_v because_o of_o the_o promise_n of_o infallibility_n or_o disbelieve_v the_o promise_n because_o she_o have_v err_v when_o both_o side_n be_v equal_o plain_a and_o yet_o can_v never_o be_v reconcile_v it_o be_v a_o sore_a temptation_n to_o believe_v neither_o when_o i_o know_v not_o which_o to_o choose_v and_o can_v possible_o believe_v both_o so_o through_o it_o this_o will_v try_v all_o man_n for_o all_o must_v pass_v through_o this_o fire_n as_o the_o ancient_n believe_v and_o those_o who_o have_v hay_n or_o stubble_n or_o any_o combustible_a matter_n about_o they_o who_o have_v any_o remain_v of_o corruption_n to_o be_v purge_v away_o must_v stay_v in_o it_o a_o long_o or_o short_a time_n till_o they_o be_v thorough_o purge_v from_o of_o christianity_n but_o soon_o increase_v into_o great_a excess_n as_o it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o all_o superstition_n to_o do_v prayer_n for_o the_o dead_a seem_v at_o first_o to_o be_v use_v bishop_n or_o priest_n make_v mention_v of_o the_o name_n of_o martyr_n and_o confessor_n and_o bishop_n and_o those_o who_o have_v deserve_v well_o of_o the_o church_n and_o particular_a christian_n in_o their_o private_a devotion_n remember_v their_o own_o relation_n and_o friend_n and_o thus_o it_o become_v a_o custom_n without_o inquire_v into_o the_o reason_n of_o

church_n of_o rome_n learn_v their_o distinction_n and_o according_o allot_v three_o different_a state_n for_o these_o three_o sort_n of_o man_n heaven_n purgatory_n and_o hell._n for_o s._n austin_n teach_v that_o some_o be_v so_o perfect_o good_a that_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o prayer_n or_o oblation_n for_o they_o other_o imperfect_o good_a and_o for_o these_o prayer_n be_v profitable_a other_o very_o bad_a who_o can_v be_v redeem_v by_o the_o suffrage_n of_o the_o live_n the_o first_o of_o these_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n place_n in_o heaven_n the_o second_o in_o purgatory_n the_o how_o to_o reconcile_v but_o by_o say_v that_o when_o the_o church_n pray_v for_o saint_n and_o martyr_n prophet_n and_o apostle_n the_o meaning_n of_o her_o prayer_n be_v not_o to_o intercede_v with_o god_n for_o they_o but_o to_o praise_n god_n for_o their_o grace_n and_o virtue_n but_o when_o she_o pray_v for_o mean_a christian_n her_o prayer_n be_v intercession_n for_o pardon_n and_o rest_v to_o their_o soul_n and_o yet_o they_o be_v all_o pray_v for_o in_o the_o same_o form_n of_o word_n and_o the_o ancient_a church_n make_v no_o such_o distinction_n between_o they_o and_o thus_o he_o reconcile_v the_o matter_n by_o expound_v the_o same_o word_n to_o two_o different_a and_o contrary_a sense_n as_o they_o be_v apply_v to_o different_a subject_n which_o have_v teach_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n when_o occasion_n serve_v to_o soften_v her_o prayer_n by_o expound_v they_o contrary_a to_o the_o plain_a and_o natural_a signification_n of_o the_o word_n that_o the_o most_o direct_a and_o formal_a prayer_n to_o saint_n and_o the_o virgin_n for_o all_o temporal_a and_o spiritual_a blessing_n when_o they_o please_v shall_v signify_v no_o more_o than_o a_o bare_a ora_fw-la
