whether_o circumcision_n be_v not_o yet_o in_o use_n under_o the_o gospel_n since_o the_o same_o apostle_n in_o the_o same_o epistle_n chap._n 1.10_o call_v those_o of_o the_o circumcision_n vain_a talker_n and_o vain_a talker_n or_o vain_a talk_n or_o such_o question_n as_o be_v unprofitable_a and_o vain_a agree_v well_o enough_o to_o meet_v in_o the_o same_o person_n 2._o but_o that_o the_o question_n about_o the_o appropriate_a subject_n of_o baptism_n if_o state_v according_a to_o truth_n though_o in_o opposition_n to_o almost_o the_o whole_a world_n call_v christian_n or_o if_o but_o agitate_a and_o debate_v in_o order_n to_o the_o find_v out_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n thereabouts_o shall_v deserve_v to_o be_v number_v with_o those_o foolish_a and_o unlearned_a question_n which_o be_v unprofitable_a and_o vain_a i_o can_v believe_v because_o the_o appropriate_a subject_n of_o baptism_n be_v essential_a to_o the_o ordinance_n itself_o neither_o be_v that_o any_o more_o the_o unlearned_a question_n neither_o unprofitable_a nor_o vain_a unless_o we_o will_v suppose_v true_a baptism_n itself_o and_o the_o command_n of_o christ_n thereabouts_o to_o be_v unprofitable_a and_o vain_a which_o to_o question_v whether_o it_o be_v will_v be_v indeed_o a_o question_n unprofitable_a and_o vain_a whatever_o wisdom_n or_o learning_n otherwise_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v in_o it_o but_o as_o touch_v the_o reason_n which_o seem_v to_o induce_v the_o querist_n to_o conceive_v that_o the_o aforesaid_a question_n ought_v to_o be_v number_v with_o transgressor_n 1._o it_o do_v not_o follow_v that_o the_o question_n about_o the_o appropriate_a subject_n of_o baptism_n be_v therefore_o unprofitable_a unlearned_a foolish_a and_o vain_a because_o upon_o debate_n about_o it_o strife_n contention_n evil_a surmising_n division_n and_o revile_n and_o the_o like_a have_v occasional_o take_v place_n in_o the_o world_n no_o more_o than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o because_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o
be_v occasion_v by_o christ_n jesus_n himself_o in_o bring_v his_o gospel_n into_o the_o world_n luke_n 12.50_o 51._o and_o by_o the_o apostle_n preach_v of_o it_o 1_o thes_n 2.2_o that_o therefore_o the_o doctrine_n of_o that_o gospel_n ought_v just_o to_o be_v number_v with_o the_o aforesaid_a vain_a question_n nor_o 2._o can_v i_o be_v of_o opinion_n with_o the_o querist_n that_o the_o say_a at_o least_o so_o little_a as_o to_o make_v it_o unprofitable_a and_o vain_a because_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o ordinance_n itself_o and_o of_o its_o nature_n use_n and_o tendency_n depend_v upon_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o appropriate_a subject_n as_o one_o of_o the_o essentials_n of_o it_o and_o i_o can_v judge_v the_o knowledge_n and_o understanding_n the_o counsel_n of_o god_n in_o that_o ordinance_n a_o matter_n of_o so_o little_a moment_n as_o to_o render_v the_o question_n about_o it_o the_o inquire_v after_o it_o a_o vain_a thing_n nor_o do_v i_o understand_v how_o the_o knowledge_n that_o come_v by_o the_o ventilation_n of_o it_o may_v arrive_v at_o the_o understanding_n of_o man_n in_o a_o more_o peaceable_a and_o less_o troublesome_a way_n then_o by_o plead_n arguing_n and_o debating_n unless_o every_o man_n will_v of_o himself_o fall_v in_o with_o the_o truth_n whâ—ch_v if_o they_o will_v there_o will_v then_o be_v no_o need_n to_o contend_v earnest_o light_n be_v rather_o impoverish_v then_o spiritual_o enrich_v by_o it_o because_o i_o suppose_v that_o which_o make_v the_o querist_n thus_o to_o judge_v be_v but_o his_o mistake_n one_o thing_n for_o another_o viz._n their_o former_a tameness_n and_o silent_a submission_n to_o the_o judgement_n of_o their_o guide_n for_o their_o sweetness_n meekness_n humility_n love_n patience_n and_o soberness_n of_o mind_n and_o likewise_o their_o present_a activity_n and_o zeal_n for_o the_o truth_n and_o the_o propagation_n of_o it_o and_o the_o draw_v of_o other_o into_o the_o same_o participation_n and_o their_o impugn_n that_o by_o which_o they_o have_v find_v themselves_o deceive_v for_o rashness_n pride_n frowardness_n conceitednesse_n and_o the_o like_a for_o otherwise_o except_o some_o as_o in_o the_o best_a church_n of_o old_a by_o who_o offence_n will_v come_v i_o trust_v in_o their_o own_o cause_n and_o in_o the_o tenor_n of_o their_o life_n he_o may_v discern_v the_o same_o humility_n meekness_n sweetness_n love_n patience_n soberness_n of_o mind_n mortification_n to_o the_o world_n heavenlinesse_n of_o disposition_n endeavour_n of_o do_v good_a which_o be_v find_v in_o they_o before_o not_o to_o boast_v of_o what_o addition_n god_n have_v thereupon_o make_v to_o their_o spiritual_a store_n unless_o his_o judgement_n concern_v these_o shall_v be_v the_o ten_o and_o fifteen_o query_n the_o same_o answer_n will_v serve_v for_o the_o querist_n both_o in_o this_o and_o several_a other_o query_n misrepresents_a and_o mistake_v the_o case_n in_o be_v baptize_v into_o jesus_n christ_n may_v notwithstanding_o this_o his_o knowledge_n or_o persuasion_n hold_v communion_n with_o they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v such_o a_o church_n until_o he_o have_v convince_v they_o that_o they_o be_v not_o and_o then_o these_o thing_n be_v prove_v i_o suppose_v the_o contest_v will_v be_v end_v for_o have_v the_o querist_n himself_o be_v satisfy_v touch_v the_o and_o child_n that_o do_v eat_v beside_o the_o five_o thousand_o man_n by_o which_o it_o evident_o appear_v that_o though_o woman_n and_o child_n be_v join_v with_o the_o man_n in_o the_o same_o action_n yet_o that_o where_o john_n and_o mark_v mention_v the_o man_n only_o the_o woman_n and_o child_n be_v not_o to_o be_v understand_v as_o comprehend_v in_o that_o number_n which_o as_o i_o say_v be_v the_o contrary_a to_o that_o for_o the_o proof_n whereof_o those_o text_n be_v allege_v and_o therefore_o this_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v any_o ground_n to_o conceive_v that_o child_n being_n baptise_a be_v mean_v when_o man_n and_o woman_n only_a be_v mention_v as_o that_o it_o be_v a_o ground_n to_o conceive_v the_o contrary_n xxxvii_o querie_n answer_v here_o the_o querist_n suppose_v that_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v prove_v that_o there_o be_v no_o child_n baptise_a during_o the_o apostle_n day_n that_o yet_o it_o will_v no_o more_o follow_v from_o thence_o that_o other_o query_n argue_v the_o nonnecessity_n of_o a_o man_n be_v baptise_a if_o he_o have_v but_o pass_v the_o time_n of_o his_o first_o entrance_n upon_o the_o profession_n of_o christ_n as_o he_o do_v qu._n 22._o but_o why_o the_o querist_n shall_v suppose_v that_o the_o baptise_v of_o child_n now_o shall_v be_v more_o necessary_a than_o it_o be_v in_o the_o apostle_n day_n i_o know_v not_o neither_o do_v he_o nor_o as_o i_o believe_v can_v he_o give_v we_o any_o account_n something_o indeed_o he_o allege_v as_o a_o reason_n such_o as_o it_o be_v why_o possible_o christ_n &_o the_o apostle_n may_v omit_v the_o baptise_v of_o child_n in_o their_o time_n though_o otherwise_o lawful_a and_o that_o which_o they_o have_v be_v bind_v to_o do_v have_v not_o such_o a_o reason_n interpose_v and_o it_o be_v this_o viz._n because_o paul_n say_v i_o be_v not_o send_v to_o baptise_v but_o to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n meaning_n as_o he_o expound_v this_o say_n that_o baptise_v be_v not_o only_o not_o the_o principal_a but_o not_o any_o considerable_a end_n of_o his_o send_n but_o the_o publish_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o reason_n he_o further_o amplify_v thus_o if_o he_o be_v not_o send_v to_o baptise_v neither_o one_o age_n nor_o one_o sex_n or_o other_o neither_o can_v he_o be_v send_v to_o baptise_v child_n and_o if_o not_o he_o than_o neither_o christ_n nor_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o sense_n declare_v and_o then_o what_o marvel_v if_o whilst_o send_v about_o matter_n incomparable_o great_a they_o shall_v not_o be_v so_o intent_n upon_o thing_n of_o a_o secondary_a and_o light_a consequence_n as_o to_o persecute_v they_o to_o the_o uttermost_a of_o what_o they_o lawful_o may_v to_o all_o which_o i_o answer_v 1._o i_o can_v consent_v to_o the_o interpretation_n which_o the_o querist_n give_v of_o those_o word_n christ_n send_v i_o not_o to_o baptise_v etc._n etc._n when_o he_o thereby_o will_v have_v we_o understand_v that_o for_o paul_n to_o baptise_v be_v no_o considerable_a end_n of_o his_o be_v send_v of_o christ_n if_o by_o baptise_v we_o understand_v baptise_v either_o in_o his_o own_o person_n or_o by_o see_v it_o do_v by_o some_o other_o hand_n which_o latitude_n notwithstanding_o the_o querist_n allow_v for_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o for_o he_o to_o cause_n baptism_n to_o be_v admini_v to_o man_n when_o they_o do_v believe_v be_v a_o considerable_a end_n of_o the_o apostle_n send_v as_o well_o as_o his_o preach_v the_o gospel_n that_o man_n may_v believe_v and_o therefore_o they_o be_v join_v in_o the_o commission_n thus_o go_v you_o therefore_o teach_v all_o nation_n baptise_v they_o etc._n etc._n when_o therefore_o he_o say_v christ_n send_v he_o not_o to_o baptise_v doubtless_o he_o mean_v that_o the_o injunction_n do_v not_o lie_v upon_o he_o so_o much_o to_o administer_v baptism_n with_o his_o own_o hand_n for_o that_o be_v the_o thing_n of_o which_o he_o be_v speak_v as_o to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n because_o that_o be_v a_o work_n that_o may_v be_v do_v by_o a_o ordinary_a disciple_n he_o be_v not_o otherwise_o oblige_v in_o that_o case_n but_o to_o take_v care_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v do_v if_o not_o by_o himself_o yet_o by_o some_o other_o act_v 10.48_o peter_n command_v they_o to_o be_v baptise_a in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n possible_o by_o such_o
