but_o i_o think_v it_o for_o the_o public_a good_a to_o say_v what_o i_o have_v to_o which_o public_a good_a we_o be_v all_o of_o we_o in_o duty_n bind_v to_o contribute_v all_o we_o can_v whatever_o diminution_n we_o suffer_v in_o some_o man_n esteem_n i_o know_v it_o will_v be_v demand_v of_o i_o what_o need_v of_o let_v these_o man_n in_o be_v there_o not_o minister_n enough_o already_o and_o more_o than_o be_v honourable_o provide_v for_o i_o answer_v we_o shall_v have_v never_o the_o more_o for_o this_o relaxation_n these_o man_n in_o behalf_n of_o who_o i_o have_v speak_v be_v in_o be_v already_o and_o will_v preach_v some_o where_n or_o other_o and_o it_o be_v better_a we_o have_v they_o in_o public_a than_o in_o corner_n that_o so_o the_o church_n either_o have_v security_n for_o their_o peaceable_a doctrine_n which_o i_o very_o believe_v we_o may_v have_v as_o to_o most_o of_o they_o or_o opportunity_n to_o convict_v they_o of_o their_o sedition_n but_o i_o have_v other-guess_a argument_n than_o these_o that_o move_v i_o 1._o to_o those_o who_o ask_v what_o need_v of_o more_o union_n i_o return_v what_o need_v of_o holiness_n what_o need_v of_o godliness_n charity_n justice_n be_v these_o christian_a duty_n and_o be_v not_o union_n and_o peace_n as_o much_o so_o 2._o i_o be_o and_o must_v be_v in_o the_o mind_n that_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o protestant_a cause_n both_o here_o at_o home_n and_o throughout_o christendom_n lie_v in_o the_o union_n of_o protestant_n and_o the_o glory_n purity_n and_o power_n of_o christianity_n in_o this_o world_n stand_v or_o fall_v with_o protestantism_n 3._o i_o must_v be_v so_o ingenuous_a as_o to_o acknowledge_v that_o though_o perhaps_o the_o city_n and_o divers_a particular_a place_n flourish_v with_o such_o preacher_n as_o never_o they_o have_v before_o yet_o the_o way_n of_o preach_v in_o many_o part_n of_o the_o country_n and_o in_o some_o no_o obscure_a place_n too_o may_v be_v much_o improve_v and_o needs_o supply_v and_o it_o can_v never_o be_v make_v out_o to_o the_o world_n but_o it_o be_v better_a we_o have_v too_o many_o good_a preacher_n than_o too_o few_o i_o can_v tell_v some_o man_n in_o their_o ear_n they_o also_o have_v strange_o multiply_v curacy_n which_o be_v too_o often_o vacant_a the_o lord_n forgive_v they_o and_o redress_v this_o great_a evil_n in_o his_o church_n if_o i_o think_v not_o these_o argument_n sufficient_a i_o will_v add_v more_o which_o occur_v plentiful_o but_o my_o postscript_n be_v too_o much_o swo●n_v already_o i_o be_o not_o unsensible_a how_o difficult_a it_o will_v be_v to_o gain_v even_o this_o point_n which_o i_o have_v plead_v for_o as_o small_a as_o it_o seem_v to_o some_o that_o it_o neither_o can_v nor_o aught_o to_o be_v attempt_v without_o the_o legislative_a power_n i_o have_v say_v often_o enough_o and_o i_o conceive_v the_o dissenter_n will_v do_v well_o by_o perform_v so_o much_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n as_o they_o can_v to_o encourage_v and_o invite_v authority_n to_o savour_v they_o by_o a_o relaxation_n in_o what_o they_o can_v i_o will_v therefore_o by_o way_n of_o conclusion_n make_v one_o proposal_n which_o above_o all_o yet_o do_v or_o say_v be_v the_o likely_a mean_n in_o my_o opinion_n to_o bring_v on_o a_o accommodation_n mr._n baxter_n say_v part._n 3._o p._n 8._o where_o he_o live_v he_o come_v to_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o church_n prayer_n when_o he_o can_v and_o stay_v to_o the_o end_n and_o that_o peaceable_a worthy_a man_n above-commended_n who_o i_o know_v not_o but_o who_o name_n i_o find_v out_o by_o compare_v one_o book_n with_o another_o mr._n john_n humphrey_n the_o author_n of_o both_o piece_n touch_v reordination_n of_o the_o heal_n paper_n and_o of_o the_o peaceable_a resolution_n etc._n etc._n seem_v to_o offer_v for_o himself_o and_o divers_a of_o his_o brethren_n not_o only_o to_o use_v but_o to_o subscribe_v to_o the_o use_n of_o the_o liturgy_n as_o to_o the_o ordinary_a lordsday_n service_n it_o be_v plain_a then_o that_o several_a of_o the_o nonconformist_a preacher_n can_v in_o conscience_n use_v thus_o much_o of_o the_o liturgy_n yet_o i_o never_o hear_v either_o that_o mr._n baxter_n when_o he_o preach_v public_o occasional_a sermon_n as_o he_o call_v they_o and_o to_o which_o if_o i_o mistake_v he_o not_o he_o conceive_v his_o old_a licence_n may_v authorise_v he_o still_o i_o say_v i_o never_o hear_v either_o he_o or_o any_o other_o of_o his_o brethren_n do_v read_v any_o part_n of_o the_o liturgy_n before_o any_o of_o their_o preach_n that_o they_o still_o frequent_o preach_v i_o no_o whit_n question_n now_o my_o proposal_n be_v that_o before_o all_o such_o sermon_n at_o least_o before_o their_o more_o solemn_a one_o on_o the_o lord_n day_n they_o will_v respective_o use_v the_o morning_n and_o the_o evening_n prayer_n which_o they_o thus_o acknowledge_v they_o can_v use_v and_o subscribe_v to_o the_o use_n of_o and_o by_o their_o practice_n thus_o teach_v the_o people_n the_o lawfulness_n of_o so_o much_o conformity_n i_o shall_v not_o doubt_v but_o such_o frequent_a reverend_a and_o serious_a use_n of_o it_o will_v soon_o recommend_v it_o to_o their_o conscience_n and_o to_o the_o conscience_n of_o all_o sober_a person_n among_o they_o and_o this_o practice_n will_v not_o only_o be_v a_o argument_n that_o they_o talk_v about_o accommodation_n in_o good_a earnest_n but_o certain_o prevail_v with_o the_o bishop_n to_o use_v their_o interest_n and_o address_v to_o his_o majesty_n in_o parliament_n for_o some_o such_o relaxation_n or_o explanatory_a act_n as_o be_v desire_v this_o will_v be_v something_o of_o a_o come_n near_a to_o we_o and_o be_v but_o reasonable_a in_o they_o for_o that_o they_o expect_v we_o shall_v be_v move_v towards_o they_o but_o if_o they_o will_v still_o total_o hold_v off_o and_o only_o tell_v we_o they_o can_v do_v thus_o and_o thus_o much_o towards_o peace_n yet_o real_o do_v nothing_o it_o be_v a_o very_a shrewd_a sing_v either_o that_o there_o be_v not_o in_o they_o that_o cordial_a desire_n of_o union_n they_o pretend_v to_o or_o that_o their_o nonconformity_n be_v more_o the_o act_n and_o resolution_n of_o their_o will_n than_o of_o their_o conscience_n which_o if_o it_o shall_v appear_v they_o will_v for_o the_o future_a find_v less_o belief_n and_o few_o favourer_n the_o end_n
and_o as_o to_o religion_n you_o be_v safe_a for_o you_o be_v sure_a of_o true_a sacrament_n a_o save_a ministry_n the_o best_a sort_n of_o worship_n and_o what_o not_o ah_o my_o brethren_n these_o however_o in_o themselves_o golden_a pipe_n and_o sacred_a conveyance_n of_o grace_n to_o those_o who_o use_v they_o aright_o be_v yet_o in_o themselves_o and_o as_o the_o world_n go_v faciles_fw-la &_o parabiles_fw-la ritus_fw-la a_o godliness_n easy_a to_o be_v have_v and_o which_o may_v prove_v as_o destructive_a as_o easy_a to_o be_v come_v by_o when_o the_o outward_a enjoyment_n hereof_o be_v the_o great_a matter_n of_o our_o acquiescence_n but_o to_o examine_v this_o cheat_n a_o little_a more_o narrow_o as_o well_o for_o the_o more_o effectual_a delivery_n of_o man_n from_o it_o as_o the_o clear_n the_o point_n in_o hand_n that_o division_n have_v bring_v man_n to_o place_n godliness_n in_o matter_n most_o contrary_a to_o its_o nature_n admit_v i_o place_v true_a religion_n and_o so_o godliness_n very_o much_o in_o be_v of_o this_o or_o that_o church_n i_o say_v the_o church_n i_o be_o of_o be_v either_o a_o true_a one_o or_o a_o false_a one_o one_o that_o hold_v to_o or_o one_o that_o have_v break_v off_o from_o catholic_n unity_n if_o the_o late_a i_o be_o then_o in_o a_o schism_n by_o be_v of_o it_o and_o then_o by_o place_v godliness_n in_o be_v of_o this_o church_n what_o do_v i_o do_v but_o place_v it_o in_o schism_n a_o hopeful_a sort_n of_o godliness_n indeed_o and_o if_o the_o former_a if_o the_o church_n in_o adhere_v whereto_o i_o reckon_v myself_o godly_a be_v a_o true_a one_o that_o be_v a_o sincere_a member_n of_o the_o true_a catholic_n church_n i_o be_o never_o a_o whit_n the_o godly_a by_o my_o mistake_n in_o overvalue_a the_o communion_n of_o the_o church_n for_o it_o be_v great_a odds_o as_o the_o stream_n of_o man_n spirit_n run_v but_o that_o my_o zeal_n for_o such_o dear_o belove_a church_n transport_v i_o into_o such_o admiration_n of_o it_o that_o either_o i_o shall_v confine_v salvation_n to_o it_o and_o insist_v so_o far_o on_o the_o necessity_n of_o communion_n with_o it_o as_o to_o forget_v catholic_n charity_n by_o which_o mean_v again_o i_o be_o fall_v into_o schism_n though_o of_o a_o different_a sort_n from_o that_o before_o mention_v and_o still_o place_v godliness_n in_o be_v of_o this_o church_n thus_o strict_o i_o place_v godliness_n in_o schism_n or_o else_o rest_v in_o the_o mere_a enjoyment_n of_o those_o advantage_n and_o preeminency_n i_o apprehend_v by_o it_o run_v a_o round_a of_o external_a duty_n and_o observance_n but_o little_a or_o not_o at_o all_o concern_v myself_o as_o to_o a_o real_a change_a heart_n and_o renew_a spirit_n and_o then_o the_o godliness_n with_o which_o i_o please_v myself_o lie_v only_o in_o some_o formality_n and_o church_n privilege_n which_o come_v natural_o under_o what_o the_o apostle_n style_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n and_o which_o he_o say_v a_o man_n may_v have_v and_o deny_v its_o power_n that_o be_v be_v void_a of_o holiness_n without_o which_o no_o man_n can_v see_v the_o lord_n and_o be_v not_o this_o as_o pernicious_a a_o mistake_n alas_o alas_o my_o brethren_n it_o be_v not_o the_o communion_n of_o saint_n can_v save_v man_n though_o it_o be_v both_o our_o duty_n and_o interest_n to_o maintain_v it_o a_o man_n may_v be_v damn_v in_o the_o pure_a church_n on_o earth_n for_o a_o carnal_a worldly_a heart_n or_o a_o disorderly_a unholy_a life_n however_o our_o division_n may_v delude_v we_o into_o contrary_a fancy_n this_o kind_n of_o man_n we_o have_v speak_v of_o be_v common_o zealot_v of_o one_o side_n or_o tother_o but_o there_o be_v another_o sort_n which_o be_v lukewarm_a indifferent_a general_o to_o all_o religion_n and_o church_n in_o particular_a some_o religion_n perhaps_o they_o think_v it_o be_v fit_a there_o shall_v be_v for_o the_o better_a manage_v the_o people_n and_o if_o in_o their_o judgement_n they_o do_v proceed_v to_o any_o specialty_n possible_o they_o will_v tell_v you_o it_o be_v expedient_a there_o shall_v be_v several_a religion_n that_o every_o man_n may_v find_v one_o the_o profession_n whereof_o will_v suit_v his_o humour_n a_o policy_n not_o unlike_a unto_o which_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v now_o a_o long_a time_n use_v in_o invent_v and_o maintain_v so_o many_o religious_a order_n now_o as_o they_o beforementioned_a place●_n religion_n and_o so_o godliness_n or_o our_o duty_n to_o god_n in_o be_v of_o what_o they_o apprehend_v to_o be_v god_n true_a church_n so_o these_o second_o place_v it_o in_o seem_v to_o be_v of_o such_o or_o such_o a_o church_n or_o party_n for_o in_o reality_n and_o as_o far_o as_o religion_n ●s_v religion_n they_o neither_o believe_v erroneous_a and_o in_o the_o sincerity_n of_o their_o heart_n these_o out_o of_o humour_n or_o interest_n seem_v to_o do_v so_o for_o the_o present_a and_o when_o either_o humour_n or_o interest_n vary_v then_o farewell_n such_o espouse_a party_n or_o religion_n and_o now_o let_v we_o put_v the_o question_n in_o plain_a english_a and_o as_o plain_o answer_v it_o what_o do_v these_o man_n place_n godliness_n in_o very_o in_o a_o atheistical_a humoursome_a hypocrisy_n and_o be_v it_o not_o true_a that_o our_o division_n foster_v and_o confirm_v these_o wretch_n atheistical_a vein_n they_o seem_v to_o themselves_o rational_o defensible_a in_o disbelieve_v all_o religion_n and_o our_o several_a church_n testimony_n thereof_o because_o the_o witness_n be_v not_o agree_v among_o themselves_o in_o a_o word_n and_o to_o conclude_v this_o particular_a of_o misplace_a godliness_n or_o deceive_v ourselves_o as_o to_o its_o whole_a nature_n it_o be_v sure_a godliness_n primary_o consist_v in_o a_o serious_a belief_n of_o the_o be_v and_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o in_o a_o entire_a resignation_n to_o he_o whence_o most_o natural_o and_o sweet_o slow_a all_o its_o inward_a and_o outward_a act_n but_o we_o have_v above_o make_v it_o evident_a division_n have_v bring_v christendom_n to_o that_o pass_n that_o some_o man_n place_v godliness_n in_o such_o practice_n which_o these_o sort_n now_o what_o can_v be_v more_o contrary_a to_o real_a godliness_n than_o all_o these_o by_o what_o we_o have_v say_v therefore_o of_o the_o misplace_n of_o godliness_n it_o appear_v division_n so_o vitiate_v the_o spirit_n of_o private_a man_n as_o to_o destroy_v real_a godliness_n that_o be_v the_o first_o part_n of_o holiness_n in_o they_o 2._o though_o the_o damage_n nor_o do_v i_o ever_o see_v he_o since_o when_o be_v choose_v out_o of_o westminster_n school_n to_o cambridge_n i_o wait_v on_o a_o good_a man_n who_o have_v show_v i_o diverse_a never_o to_o be_v forget_v kindness_n and_o especial_o by_o who_o ministry_n i_o have_v make_v some_o proficiency_n in_o godliness_n though_o i_o must_v say_v the_o ground_n of_o it_o i_o have_v have_v elsewhere_o i_o wait_v i_o say_v on_o such_o a_o reverend_a person_n to_o pay_v my_o thanks_o and_o take_v my_o leave_n and_o at_o my_o part_n among_o other_o very_a good_a advice_n he_o caution_v i_o not_o to_o leave_v the_o university_n too_o soon_o as_o the_o manner_n of_o those_o who_o go_v ripe_a thither_o be_v for_o they_o say_v he_o that_o do_v so_o be_v never_o able_a to_o wade_v into_o that_o depth_n of_o learning_n which_o they_o may_v easy_o have_v do_v and_o beside_o that_o for_o want_v of_o have_v go_v through_o the_o whole_a circle_n of_o art_n and_o science_n regular_o they_o too_o often_o become_v opinionative_n furious_a unable_a to_o bear_v liberal_a conference_n or_o opposition_n though_o it_o be_v by_o way_n only_o of_o dispute_n or_o brotherly_a admonition_n as_o say_v he_o we_o have_v now_o experience_n in_o a_o very_a godly_a but_o strange_o fierce_a man_n mr._n baxter_n by_o name_n who_o though_o he_o will_v speak_v very_o well_o yet_o be_v not_o able_a to_o endure_v be_v gainsay_v in_o any_o thing_n if_o the_o gentleman_n be_v alive_a and_o read_v this_o i_o be_o sure_a he_o will_v acknowledge_v many_o of_o his_o own_o expression_n and_o say_v if_o i_o have_v err_v from_o they_o it_o be_v rather_o in_o partem_fw-la faventiorem_fw-la he_o add_v there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o truth_n in_o that_o example_n of_o old_a lily_n use_v add_v quòd_fw-la ingenuas_fw-la didicisse_fw-la fideliter_fw-la art_n emollit_fw-la mores_fw-la nec_fw-la sinit_fw-la esse_fw-la feros_fw-la haddit_n mr._n baxter_n be_v breed_v at_o disputation_n or_o in_o the_o school_n he_o will_v manage_v himself_o with_o more_o temper_n this_o gentleman_n if_o alive_a i_o be_o sure_a be_v a_o nonconformist_n this_o be_v all_o i_o have_v ever_o hear_v of_o mr._n baxter_n till_o from_o cambridge_n make_v some_o excursion_n into_o my_o own_o country_n i_o there_o find_v he_o cry_v up_o as_o the_o apostle_n of_o those_o part_n and_o his_o book_n fly_v there_o much_o abroad_o i_o meet_v with_o his_o gildas_n salvianus_n which_o i_o read_v with_o great_a concernment_n again_o and_o again_o in_o short_a such_o be_v the_o impression_n it_o make_v on_o i_o that_o i_o ever_o after_o believe_v whatever_o infirmity_n mr._n baxter_n may_v have_v he_o be_v certain_o a_o man_n most_o faithful_a in_o his_o ministry_n come_v down_o again_o in_o the_o year_n 1658._o as_o i_o remember_v i_o meet_v with_o his_o holy_a commonwealth_n and_o read_v a_o great_a part_n of_o it_o much_o startle_v thereat_o and_o with_o great_a concernment_n pity_v he_o as_o to_o my_o apprehension_n out_o of_o his_o element_n yet_o i_o can_v true_o say_v love_a and_o reverence_v he_o for_o that_o i_o have_v before_o read_v in_o he_o from_o that_o time_n till_o 1663._o i_o remember_v myself_o to_o have_v hear_v or_o read_v little_a or_o nothing_o of_o he_o and_o then_o i_o be_v tell_v by_o a_o reverend_a prelate_n that_o at_o the_o conference_n of_o the_o savoy_n mr._n baxter_n be_v demand_v what_o will_v satisfy_v he_o shall_v reply_n all_o or_o nothing_o or_o word_n to_o that_o effect_n up_o on_o this_o i_o reflect_v on_o what_o that_o grave_a divine_a beforementioned_a tell_v i_o when_o i_o go_v to_o the_o university_n and_o since_o that_o
