religion_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o their_o neglect_n i_o shall_v first_o consider_v what_o the_o general_a excuse_n be_v and_o then_o consider_v some_o more_o special_a case_n 1._o some_o pretend_v that_o the_o solemninity_n of_o the_o ordinance_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o their_o neglect_n it_o be_v a_o very_a great_a ordinance_n and_o they_o dare_v not_o adventure_v to_o make_v their_o approach_n to_o it_o i_o know_v that_o there_o be_v some_o very_a good_a christian_n to_o who_o this_o be_v not_o a_o excuse_n but_o be_v a_o real_a cause_n of_o their_o absent_v from_o the_o sacrament_n they_o think_v that_o it_o be_v too_o great_a a_o adventure_n for_o such_o as_o they_o be_v to_o come_v to_o their_o lord_n supper_n although_o they_o be_v such_o as_o love_v he_o and_o do_v sincere_o desire_v and_o endeavour_v to_o keep_v his_o commandment_n what_o i_o have_v already_o say_v may_v give_v satisfaction_n in_o this_o case_n viz._n that_o humility_n and_o a_o sense_n of_o unworthiness_n be_v a_o good_a qualification_n for_o a_o communicant_a and_o that_o as_o the_o sacrament_n be_v a_o great_a and_o solemn_a ordinance_n so_o it_o be_v a_o very_a great_a duty_n to_o partake_v of_o it_o and_o therefore_o christian_n must_v take_v care_n that_o they_o do_v not_o compliment_v our_o saviour_n but_o that_o the_o examine_v themselves_o and_o reverent_o observe_v his_o institution_n great_a man_n do_v sometime_o allow_v of_o such_o excuse_n when_o they_o make_v invitation_n but_o the_o great_a god_n command_v when_o he_o invite_v and_o there_o can_v be_v no_o imagine_v that_o they_o can_v have_v be_v guilty_a of_o such_o horrid_a sin_n and_o have_v live_v such_o wicked_a life_n it_o be_v possible_a that_o they_o may_v have_v be_v in_o a_o sinful_a state_n and_o so_o have_v be_v unworthy_a communicant_n and_o thereby_o have_v eat_v and_o drink_v damnation_n to_o themselves_o but_o now_o they_o do_v most_o apparent_o damn_v their_o own_o soul_n to_o the_o bottomless_a pit_n of_o destruction_n and_o they_o damn_v the_o soul_n of_o other_o and_o in_o a_o sense_n they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o damn_v all_o religion_n if_o these_o profligate_v wretch_n be_v strict_o require_v to_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n they_o will_v be_v under_o a_o necessity_n of_o reform_v that_o they_o may_v be_v admit_v to_o it_o there_o will_v be_v a_o admonition_n from_o the_o minister_n there_o will_v be_v trerible_a check_n from_o their_o own_o conscience_n which_o the_o sacrament_n will_v rouse_v and_o cause_v to_o terrify_v they_o and_o if_o after_o upon_o their_o promise_n of_o amendment_n they_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o sacrament_n they_o shall_v return_v to_o their_o former_a course_n other_o communicant_n will_v take_v notice_n of_o they_o and_o give_v they_o friendly_a and_o godly_a admonition_n and_o if_o those_o prevail_v not_o they_o will_v at_o length_n complain_v to_o the_o church_n by_o which_o they_o shall_v be_v force_v to_o live_v better_o or_o be_v abandon_v the_o society_n of_o christian_n but_o when_o man_n turn_v their_o back_n upon_o the_o sacrament_n they_o be_v then_o stranger_n to_o their_o neighbour_n or_o at_o least_o be_v reprove_v they_o answer_v to_o the_o reprover_n that_o he_o be_v nothing_o concern_v with_o they_o which_o they_o can_v not_o do_v if_o they_o communicate_v together_o at_o the_o bless_a sacrament_n there_o be_v a_o great_a complaint_n of_o unworthy_a communicant_n and_o i_o hope_v it_o be_v great_a than_o there_o be_v cause_n for_o but_o what_o a_o fearful_a cause_n be_v there_o to_o complain_v of_o the_o unworthiness_n of_o the_o horrid_a and_o shameful_a wickedness_n of_o non-communicants_a the_o consequence_n of_o noncommunicating_a may_v come_v likewise_o under_o a_o more_o special_a consideration_n there_o be_v thousand_o that_o be_v not_o open_o scandalous_a and_o profane_a who_o condition_n will_v not_o be_v so_o bad_a as_o it_o be_v if_o they_o frequent_v the_o sacrament_n there_o will_v not_o be_v so_o much_o guilt_n and_o trouble_n in_o their_o mind_n when_o they_o be_v in_o health_n nor_o so_o much_o fear_v and_o disquietment_n when_o sickness_n come_v this_o be_v a_o plain_a case_n and_o almost_o every_o day_n experience_n prove_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o let_v every_o man_n who_o live_v in_o any_o know_a sin_n examine_v his_o own_o mind_n whether_o if_o he_o be_v under_o a_o necessity_n of_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n he_o will_v not_o be_v more_o afraid_a to_o commit_v that_o sin_n whether_o he_o will_v not_o be_v more_o afraid_a to_o neglect_v his_o duty_n to_o god_n both_o in_o public_a and_o private_a and_o when_o he_o have_v receive_v after_o a_o solemn_a and_o devout_a manner_n and_o know_v that_o he_o must_v short_o renew_v his_o engagement_n to_o god_n again_o he_o will_v not_o be_v more_o careful_a of_o his_o way_n i_o know_v there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o who_o be_v afraid_a to_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n but_o if_o they_o examine_v themselves_o and_o serious_o consider_v the_o state_n of_o their_o own_o mind_n they_o will_v have_v cause_n to_o conclude_v that_o it_o be_v from_o a_o suggestion_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o that_o he_o make_v they_o afraid_a to_o receive_v that_o they_o may_v be_v the_o less_o afraid_a to_o sin_n he_o may_v be_v unworthy_a who_o do_v receive_v he_o may_v be_v one_o that_o live_v a_o sinful_a life_n but_o we_o have_v much_o more_o cause_n to_o think_v he_o unworthy_a and_o in_o a_o sinful_a state_n who_o receive_v not_o at_o all_o there_o be_v likewise_o a_o more_o dreadful_a consequence_n in_o respect_n of_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n when_o the_o non-communicant_a be_v sick_a and_o force_v to_o look_v back_o upon_o his_o former_a life_n which_o i_o have_v have_v such_o frequent_a occasion_n to_o take_v notice_n of_o that_o i_o visit_v the_o sick_a with_o some_o kind_n of_o fear_n lest_o i_o shall_v find_v their_o neglect_n of_o the_o sacrament_n torment_v their_o conscience_n i_o never_o yet_o hear_v any_o say_v that_o they_o have_v damn_v their_o soul_n by_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n although_o i_o must_v confess_v i_o have_v hear_v some_o lament_n that_o they_o do_v not_o come_v to_o it_o so_o qualify_v as_o they_o may_v have_v do_v i_o never_o yet_o hear_v any_o say_v i_o wish_v i_o have_v never_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n although_o in_o some_o case_n as_o i_o shall_v show_v there_o may_v be_v cause_n for_o person_n to_o wish_v so_o but_o that_o man_n and_o woman_n have_v not_o receive_v be_v the_o torment_n of_o their_o depart_a
