ordinary_a mean_n and_o also_o to_o give_v a_o reputation_n to_o and_o to_o confirm_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o gospel_n have_v get_v a_o large_a foot_n and_o acceptance_n in_o the_o world_n need_v not_o these_o aid_n to_o its_o reputation_n nor_o such_o miraculous_a confirmation_n these_o therefore_o soon_o cease_v and_o have_v rare_o if_o at_o all_o be_v since_o give_v out_o but_o there_o be_v other_o gift_n that_o be_v more_o ordinary_a and_o of_o constant_a and_o daily_a use_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n such_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n of_o preach_v of_o spiritual_a conference_n etc._n etc._n now_o christian_n be_v capable_a of_o growth_n and_o increase_n in_o these_o but_o beside_o these_o there_o be_v gracious_a habit_n which_o be_v power_n and_o ability_n in_o the_o soul_n enable_v it_o to_o act_n of_o more_o secret_a and_o inward_a communion_n with_o god_n such_o as_o faith_n love_n and_o other_o and_o these_o be_v capable_a of_o increase_n if_o not_o in_o their_o number_n yet_o in_o their_o degree_n of_o intention_n hence_o the_o apostle_n pray_v lord_n increase_v our_o faith_n and_o this_o left_a room_n for_o the_o apostle_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o corinthian_n 2_o cor._n 9.10_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v increase_v their_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n and_o for_o the_o thessalonian_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v make_v they_o of_o the_o spirit_n they_o all_o grow_v but_o some_o grow_v much_o fast_o than_o other_o grow_v and_o the_o thrive_a and_o prosper_v of_o their_o soul_n be_v much_o more_o evident_a to_o the_o world_n in_o this_o also_o the_o actual_a providence_n of_o god_n have_v its_o hand_n let_v i_o before_o i_o shut_v up_o this_o discourse_n attempt_v to_o give_v you_o a_o account_n of_o this_o to_o show_v the_o reasonableness_n of_o this_o motion_n of_o divine_a providence_n and_o that_o in_o this_o the_o way_n of_o god_n be_v equal_a 1._o i_o shall_v only_o in_o this_o case_n premise_v this_o that_o our_o eye_n we_o hear_v man_n mighty_o improve_v in_o their_o ability_n fit_o to_o express_v their_o own_o and_o other_o want_n unto_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o to_o implead_v they_o with_o proper_a argument_n we_o hear_v a_o minister_n improve_v in_o preach_v a_o ordinary_a christian_a improve_v in_o his_o knowledge_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o his_o utterance_n and_o ability_n to_o vessel_n yet_o they_o have_v the_o strong_a passion_n so_o it_o be_v true_a concern_v christian_n those_o that_o be_v the_o weak_a christian_n have_v the_o strong_a affection_n and_o passion_n conformable_o to_o this_o it_o be_v ordinary_o observe_v that_o christian_n usual_o in_o the_o begin_n of_o their_o conversion_n have_v the_o strong_a affection_n the_o most_o passionate_a grief_n for_o sin_n the_o most_o unsatisfied_a pant_n and_o breathe_n after_o god_n and_o his_o ordinance_n but_o at_o this_o time_n weak_a and_o less_o confirm_a habit_n of_o faith_n of_o self-denial_n and_o mortification_n and_o be_v more_o easy_o than_o afterward_o turn_v aside_o by_o a_o temptation_n but_o these_o mistake_v be_v easy_o obviate_v i_o easy_o grant_v it_o that_o there_o be_v real_a you_o know_v come_v into_o the_o world_n little_a child_n and_o be_v perfect_v and_o grow_v up_o by_o degree_n and_o as_o the_o first_o adam_n be_v the_o only_a man_n who_o come_v into_o the_o world_n perfect_a as_o to_o natural_a part_n and_o growth_n so_o jesus_n christ_n the_o second_o adam_n be_v the_o only_a man_n that_o at_o first_o appear_v to_o the_o world_n perfect_a in_o grace_n for_o most_o smother_v and_o choke_v with_o ill_a relation_n and_o company_n which_o discover_v itself_o as_o soon_o as_o those_o person_n be_v free_v from_o those_o entanglement_n and_o encumbrance_n but_o while_o they_o be_v trouble_v with_o they_o this_o growth_n be_v not_o so_o evident_a nor_o do_v we_o constant_o find_v grace_n thrive_v under_o such_o ill_a shadow_n so_o prone_a be_v our_o corrupt_a nature_n to_o receive_v contrary_a impression_n and_o nothing_o so_o much_o as_o converse_v expose_v we_o to_o the_o reception_n of_o they_o so_o that_o this_o be_v like_o a_o ill_a air_n to_o the_o body_n which_o often_o hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o it_o 4._o four_o as_o the_o growth_n of_o the_o body_n be_v hinder_v by_o some_o disease_n the_o growth_n of_o a_o plant_n by_o some_o canker_n or_o some_o ill_a wind_n or_o by_o the_o check_n which_o it_o may_v have_v by_o the_o bite_n of_o some_o beast_n so_o may_v the_o growth_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v much_o hinder_v 1._o by_o the_o prevailing_n of_o some_o particular_a corruption_n 2._o or_o by_o the_o wound_n which_o the_o soul_n receive_v from_o some_o temptation_n it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v some_o sickness_n in_o which_o person_n shoot_v out_o and_o by_o which_o they_o be_v rather_o advantage_v than_o hinder_v in_o their_o growth_n but_o there_o be_v other_o habituate_v distemper_n which_o hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o young_a person_n there_o be_v no_o prevail_a corruption_n but_o give_v a_o check_n to_o a_o growth_n in_o grace_n though_o sometime_o the_o prevail_a of_o it_o do_v by_o accident_n promote_v grace_n in_o its_o exercise_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o corinthian_n 2_o cor._n 7.11_o but_o prevail_a lust_n do_v wonderful_o hinder_v proficiency_n in_o grace_n to_o instance_n but_o in_o that_o one_o lust_n of_o earthly_a mindedness_n let_v but_o a_o earthly_a covetous_a mind_n prevail_v upon_o any_o it_o be_v a_o wonderful_a thing_n to_o observe_v how_o it_o check_v all_o spirtual_a progress_n it_o betray_v a_o christian_n to_o so_o many_o practical_a error_n both_o of_o omission_n and_o commission_n that_o his_o neighbour_n stand_v by_o and_o observe_v he_o can_v but_o cry_v out_o in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n how_o dwell_v the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o this_o man_n though_o they_o see_v much_o in_o he_o which_o dispose_v they_o to_o charitable_a thought_n and_o make_v they_o that_o they_o can_v but_o conclude_v he_o be_v one_o that_o fear_v god_n yet_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o reconcile_v the_o action_n of_o his_o life_n to_o what_o the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o grace_n yea_o and_o long_a and_o violent_a temptation_n do_v also_o much_o hinder_v the_o soul_n growth_n they_o be_v like_o cold_a wind_n or_o the_o bite_n of_o beast_n to_o the_o plant_n which_o discourage_n the_o growth_n of_o they_o though_o they_o be_v not_o internal_a cause_n yet_o they_o be_v external_a cause_n of_o the_o plant_n unthriftiness_n so_o it_o be_v with_o long_a and_o violent_a temptation_n they_o indeed_o do_v not_o work_v as_o internal_a cause_n i_o mean_v such_o temptation_n as_o be_v ab_fw-la host_n from_o our_o grand_a adversary_n to_o hinder_v a_o christian_n growth_n but_o they_o be_v great_a external_a cause_n discourage_v the_o soul_n in_o almost_o all_o its_o exercise_n of_o communion_n with_o god_n and_o application_n of_o itself_o unto_o he_o 5._o last_o any_o desertion_n or_o with-drawing_n of_o divine_a influence_n be_v great_a cause_n there_o be_v few_o plant_n which_o grow_v much_o in_o the_o shade_n ordinary_o the_o influence_n of_o heaven_n both_o of_o the_o sun_n and_o the_o rain_n be_v necessary_a to_o the_o growth_n of_o the_o plant_n i_o be_o sure_a the_o influence_n of_o the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n be_v necessary_a to_o the_o spiritual_a growth_n of_o a_o good_a christian_a and_o if_o they_o be_v with-drawn_a though_o the_o soul_n may_v live_v yet_o during_o the_o withholdings_a of_o they_o it_o will_v not_o much_o grow_v or_o thrive_v the_o soul_n will_v live_v during_o the_o withdraw_a of_o they_o for_o i_o have_v once_o and_o again_o tell_v you_o that_o the_o lord_n never_o withdraw_v what_o of_o his_o spiritual_a influence_n upon_o the_o soul_n be_v necessary_a to_o uphold_v and_o maintain_v the_o spiritual_a union_n and_o life_n but_o no_o soul_n flourish_v and_o increase_v much_o under_o such_o a_o dispensation_n it_o stand_v in_o the_o shadow_n and_o want_v those_o beam_n which_o be_v necessary_a to_o its_o bear_n and_o bring_v forth_o much_o fruit_n these_o now_o be_v the_o great_a cause_n of_o that_o variety_n which_o we_o discern_v in_o christian_n growth_n other_o cause_n may_v be_v assign_v but_o this_o be_v same_o god_n can_v speak_v different_a thing_n god_n be_v truth_n and_o every_o truth_n be_v from_o god_n no_o lie_n no_o falsehood_n can_v possible_o be_v from_o god_n 2._o partly_o because_o all_o the_o people_n of_o god_n have_v the_o same_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n dwell_v in_o they_o and_o be_v under_o the_o same_o promise_n of_o this_o holy_a spirit_n lead_v they_o into_o all_o truth_n and_o the_o annointing_n teach_v they_o all_o thing_n 3._o again_o they_o have_v all_o the_o same_o word_n of_o truth_n to_o guide_v they_o and_o to_o examine_v and_o measure_v proposition_n by_o they_o have_v the_o law_n and_o the_o testimony_n and_o that_o be_v the_o standard_n in_o the_o market_n of_o truth_n the_o touchstone_n by_o which_o every_o proposition_n be_v to_o be_v try_v the_o scale_n in_o which_o every_o proposition_n be_v to_o be_v weigh_v yet_o notwithstanding_o this_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o obvious_a than_o that_o even_o such_o who_o if_o we_o may_v judge_v any_o thing_n do_v true_o fear_v god_n have_v strange_o different_a apprehension_n concern_v divine_a truth_n concern_v the_o sacrament_n the_o use_n of_o the_o law_n the_o extent_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n the_o power_n of_o man_n will_n the_o true_a notion_n of_o faith_n etc._n etc._n now_o the_o question_n be_v whence_o this_o variety_n be_v the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o who_o because_o they_o receive_v not_o the_o truth_n in_o the_o love_n of_o it_o god_n give_v up_o to_o strong_a delusion_n to_o believe_v a_o lie_n that_o they_o may_v be_v damn_v because_o they_o have_v have_v pleasure_n in_o unrighteousness_n 2_o thes_n 2.9_o 10_o 11_o 12._o or_o because_o as_o the_o astle_n speak_v rom._n 1._o they_o have_v detain_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n in_o unrighteousness_n i_o say_v for_o all_o these_o i_o shall_v shut_v they_o out_o of_o my_o discourse_n and_o only_o inquire_v whence_o such_o as_o true_o love_v and_o
power_n so_o as_o if_o he_o will_v he_o may_v do_v it_o no_o man_n will_v deny_v but_o a_o man_n have_v a_o power_n to_o deal_v just_o to_o give_v alm_n to_o the_o poor_a and_o many_o other_o thing_n so_o as_o he_o be_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n that_o pretend_v want_v of_o strength_n to_o many_o external_a action_n which_o god_n have_v command_v he_o which_o be_v but_o act_n of_o moral_a discipline_n hence_o it_o be_v no_o great_a wonder_n to_o hear_v the_o patron_n of_o freewill_n urge_v this_o as_o the_o whole_a duty_n of_o man_n but_o alas_o though_o this_o be_v his_o duty_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o the_o least_o part_n of_o his_o duty_n our_o great_a duty_n to_o god_n lie_v as_o in_o external_a act_n of_o piety_n so_o in_o the_o internal_a government_n of_o the_o motion_n of_o our_o heart_n affection_n according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o divine_a law_n it_o lie_v in_o external_a action_n such_o as_o pray_v hear_v the_o word_n etc._n etc._n but_o chief_o in_o the_o government_n of_o our_o inward_a man_n that_o we_o may_v perform_v all_o our_o action_n whether_o respect_v god_n or_o man_n in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o he_o have_v require_v now_o that_o which_o we_o call_v strengthen_v grace_n be_v that_o influence_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n upon_o the_o soul_n by_o which_o the_o soul_n be_v enable_v to_o perform_v whatsoever_o god_n require_v of_o it_o both_o in_o do_v and_o suffer_v in_o such_o a_o acceptable_a manner_n as_o god_n require_v at_o our_o hand_n duty_n may_v be_v divide_v 1._o into_o such_o act_n which_o be_v in_o our_o own_o power_n gift_n and_o influence_n such_o as_o knowledge_n utterance_n etc._n etc._n which_o although_o god_n do_v not_o give_v unto_o all_o yet_o he_o do_v give_v unto_o many_o who_o never_o taste_v any_o thing_n of_o his_o distinguish_a grace_n thus_o man_n may_v pray_v prithee_o etc._n etc._n it_o be_v true_a some_o have_v more_o ability_n unto_o these_o act_n than_o other_o and_o some_o christian_n at_o some_o time_n may_v find_v more_o strength_n and_o ability_n than_o at_o other_o time_n but_o this_o depend_v not_o upon_o any_o influence_n of_o special_a strengthen_v grace_n but_o upon_o the_o different_a temper_n and_o complexion_n of_o person_n upon_o their_o different_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n and_o gift_n and_o part_n and_o their_o strength_n as_o to_o these_o act_n rise_v and_o fall_v as_o their_o gift_n and_o part_n increase_v hold_v or_o decay_v 3._o but_o three_o there_o be_v duty_n that_o be_v more_o internal_a such_o as_o meditate_v of_o god_n delight_v believe_v in_o he_o breathe_v after_o he_o fervency_n of_o spirit_n in_o his_o service_n the_o right_a manner_n of_o perform_v all_o external_a act_n now_o to_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o there_o need_v a_o special_a influence_n in_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n beside_o all_o the_o advantage_n which_o any_o man_n can_v have_v from_o natural_a part_n or_o gift_n and_o the_o experience_n of_o every_o use_n of_o mean_n where_o mean_n can_v be_v have_v it_o be_v true_a christ_n once_o and_o never_o but_o once_o that_o we_o read_v of_o make_v use_v of_o clay_n and_o spittle_n to_o cure_v the_o pliable_a spirit_n now_o where_o it_o happen_v that_o there_o be_v a_o change_n wrought_v in_o some_o person_n of_o airy_a and_o light_a spirit_n or_o such_o as_o be_v proud_a and_o high_a or_o froward_a and_o passionate_a and_o stubborn_a a_o progress_n and_o growth_n in_o habit_n and_o exercise_n of_o grace_n will_v not_o be_v so_o soon_o evident_a and_o apparent_a as_o in_o those_o soul_n
