serve_v for_o the_o gather_n edify_a and_o perfect_v of_o this_o church_n 2_o and_o as_o any_o ever_o be_v or_o be_v convert_v to_o christ_n from_o the_o world_n they_o be_v all_o primary_o add_v to_o this_o church_n 3_o yea_o and_o all_o whether_o particular_a christian_n or_o number_n of_o christian_n associate_v all_o be_v to_o act_v as_o part_n of_o this_o church_n and_o consequent_o in_o reference_n to_o the_o good_a of_o this_o whole_a church_n all_o have_v such_o relation_n to_o and_o dependence_n upon_o this_o church_n as_o part_n have_v to_o the_o whole_a and_o a_o stand_n in_o a_o particular_a church-relation_n do_v no_o more_o take_v off_o from_o duty_n to_o this_o great_a body_n which_o be_v the_o great_a commonwealth_n than_o the_o jew_n be_v rank_v under_o their_o several_a tribe_n or_o in_o their_o particular_a city_n be_v take_v off_o from_o the_o duty_n which_o they_o owe_v to_o the_o whole_a commonwealth_n of_o israel_n etc._n etc._n that_o therefore_o he_o psal._n 2._o of_o a_o society_n of_o malignant_n 12._o and_o abundance_n of_o several_a company_n and_o society_n of_o man_n there_o be_v 2._o some_o join_v for_o pleasure_n some_o for_o profit_n and_o many_o glory_n and_o take_v great_a content_n in_o the_o society_n and_o fellowship_n and_o fruit_n they_o enjoy_v in_o those_o who_o they_o be_v link_v with_o but_o ah_o belove_n when_o thing_n be_v right_o view_v it_o will_v appear_v that_o the_o congregation_n or_o the_o society_n of_o the_o church_n of_o the_o first_o bear_v who_o name_n be_v write_v in_o heaven_n wherein_o all_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n from_o the_o beginning_n of_o the_o world_n to_o the_o end_n of_o it_o be_v all_o join_v in_o one_o body_n all_o of_o they_o unite_v to_o christ_n and_o one_o to_o another_o have_v the_o same_o spirit_n the_o same_o lord_n the_o same_o hope_n all_o of_o they_o one_o in_o all_o these_o seven_o thing_n which_o i_o have_v open_v to_o you_o it_o will_v i_o say_v one_o day_n appear_v this_o be_v the_o only_a desirable_a society_n under_o heaven_n let_v they_o therefore_o who_o be_v man_n of_o other_o society_n glory_n as_o much_o as_o they_o please_v in_o their_o suppose_a good_a fellowship_n when_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o be_v stranger_n from_o the_o commonwealth_n of_o israel_n but_o let_v we_o count_v ourselves_o happy_a that_o we_o have_v a_o part_n and_o lot_n in_o this_o communion_n 3._o wherein_o we_o have_v fellowship_n not_o only_o one_o with_o another_o but_o with_o the_o father_n and_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n second_o man_n it_o hence_o also_o follow_v for_o our_o instruction_n that_o none_o in_o all_o the_o world_n be_v or_o aught_o to_o be_v judge_v member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n but_o only_o those_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n in_o they_o real_o regenerate_v real_o holy_a real_o unite_v to_o christ_n the_o head_n these_o and_o no_o other_o be_v member_n of_o the_o church_n which_o be_v christ_n body_n which_o be_v a_o lesson_n of_o very_o great_a use_n you_o all_o know_v there_o be_v at_o this_o day_n much_o dispute_v about_o what_o thing_n be_v requisite_a to_o make_v man_n church-member_n some_o very_a learned_a man_n maintain_v that_o to_o make_v a_o man_n admittable_a into_o christ_n church_n or_o to_o make_v he_o a_o church-member_n no_o more_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n require_v but_o only_o that_o he_o give_v up_o his_o name_n and_o profess_v that_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o learn_v the_o way_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o walk_v in_o they_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n be_v say_v they_o appoint_v as_o a_o school_n to_o train_v scholar_n up_o into_o which_o be_v admit_v not_o only_o those_o that_o be_v learned_a but_o those_o who_o be_v willing_a to_o learn_v other_o say_v that_o be_v too_o lax_n if_o you_o will_v own_v a_o man_n as_o a_o church-member_n he_o must_v be_v able_a to_o give_v you_o a_o account_n of_o his_o faith_n and_o a_o promise_n of_o a_o voluntary_a subjection_n to_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n for_o time_n to_o come_v and_o if_o they_o come_v to_o that_o than_o you_o may_v take_v they_o in_o and_o own_o they_o as_o church-member_n other_o say_v you_o must_v yet_o go_v further_o unless_o you_o can_v in_o the_o judgement_n of_o your_o own_o charity_n conceive_v that_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n be_v real_o wrought_v in_o their_o heart_n you_o be_v not_o to_o own_v they_o or_o join_v with_o they_o if_o you_o can_v probable_o hope_v that_o than_o you_o may_v take_v they_o in_o other_o will_v go_v yet_o further_o and_o say_v these_o thing_n be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o unless_o there_o be_v a_o right_a admission_n by_o baptism_n when_o you_o make_v your_o first_o confession_n all_o the_o rest_n be_v in_o vain_a and_o upon_o these_o point_n we_o dispute_v till_o we_o have_v dispute_v ourselves_o into_o a_o thousand_o piece_n now_o brethren_n be_v please_v to_o know_v that_o though_o there_o be_v good_a use_n of_o these_o debate_n to_o direct_v we_o to_o know_v the_o person_n with_o who_o we_o may_v exercise_v the_o act_n of_o communion_n in_o the_o way_n and_o worship_n of_o christ_n yet_o none_o of_o all_o these_o rise_v up_o to_o prove_v a_o man_n to_o be_v a_o member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v indeed_o sign_n and_o rule_n that_o may_v teach_v we_o with_o who_o we_o may_v join_v in_o visible_a and_o external_a fellowship_n and_o who_o we_o may_v reject_v or_o cast_v out_o if_o they_o be_v take_v in_o but_o these_o be_v not_o rule_n to_o make_v we_o know_v who_o be_v real_a member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n indeed_o as_o the_o church_n be_v denominate_v from_o some_o external_a thing_n these_o rule_n direct_v we_o to_o judge_v with_o who_o and_o to_o who_o we_o may_v communicate_v in_o those_o external_a thing_n but_o these_o be_v clear_o two_o distinct_a question_n with_o who_o we_o may_v join_v in_o visible_a and_o external_a communion_n and_o who_o be_v true_o member_n of_o this_o church_n of_o christ_n of_o the_o latter_a there_o be_v but_o one_o note_n and_o that_o be_v if_o they_o be_v unite_v to_o christ_n the_o head_n have_v the_o quicken_a spirit_n of_o christ_n in_o they_o and_o the_o grace_n of_o love_n wrought_v in_o they_o which_o note_n be_v invisible_a and_o not_o external_a and_o can_v be_v know_v only_o in_o our_o own_o conscience_n if_o this_o be_v want_v let_v man_n carry_v themselves_o never_o so_o well_o so_o that_o all_o the_o people_n of_o christ_n under_o heaven_n shall_v own_v they_o yet_o jesus_n christ_n own_v they_o not_o and_o you_o may_v true_o say_v that_o all_o they_o who_o have_v not_o communion_n with_o god_n the_o father_n 3._o and_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o his_o holy_a spirit_n have_v no_o real_a communion_n with_o the_o saint_n therefore_o let_v no_o man_n rest_n or_o pride_n himself_o in_o be_v join_v in_o this_o or_o that_o church-fellowship_n a_o carnal_a of_o christ_n be_v not_o the_o body_n mean_v in_o my_o text_n but_o second_o explain_v christ_n have_v another_o body_n very_o often_o mention_v in_o the_o scripture_n which_o be_v call_v his_o mystical_a body_n or_o a_o body_n in_o a_o mystery_n but_o because_o that_o may_v be_v look_v upon_o but_o as_o a_o blind_a which_o every_o man_n may_v interpret_v according_a to_o his_o own_o fancy_n therefore_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v teach_v we_o that_o the_o collection_n or_o aggregation_n or_o the_o thus_o gather_v together_o of_o all_o the_o saint_n in_o one_o which_o the_o scripture_n call_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n though_o it_o be_v not_o his_o natural_a body_n yet_o it_o be_v to_o he_o as_o his_o natural_a body_n and_o this_o i_o pray_v you_o to_o mark_v and_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o prove_v because_o it_o be_v the_o only_a foundation_n of_o all_o the_o discourse_n that_o i_o be_o this_o day_n to_o make_v to_o you_o i_o say_v the_o church_n when_o the_o scripture_n call_v it_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o he_o as_o his_o natural_a body_n that_o be_v they_o stand_v to_o christ_n in_o the_o same_o relation_n that_o the_o natural_a body_n do_v stand_v to_o the_o natural_a head_n and_o christ_n stand_v to_o they_o in_o the_o same_o relation_n that_o a_o natural_a head_n do_v to_o the_o natural_a body_n and_o all_o the_o member_n that_o be_v all_o believer_n or_o saint_n saint_n stand_v in_o the_o same_o relation_n one_o to_o another_o as_o the_o member_n of_o a_o natural_a body_n do_v stand_v one_o to_o another_o this_o i_o say_v be_v the_o foundation_n of_o all_o and_o out_o of_o the_o many_o text_n which_o may_v be_v allege_v scripture_n to_o prove_v it_o i_o shall_v only_o to_o this_o which_o i_o have_v in_o hand_n which_o say_v express_o that_o we_o be_v all_o one_o body_n in_o christ_n and_o every_o one_o member_n one_o of_o another_o mention_v two_o more_o which_o be_v so_o plain_a that_o he_o that_o run_v may_v read_v this_o truth_n in_o they_o one_o be_v in_o the_o 1_o cor._n 12._o indeed_o almost_o the_o whole_a chapter_n be_v a_o proof_n etc._n and_o a_o improvement_n of_o this_o one_o truth_n the_o apostle_n tell_v they_o in_o the_o beginning_n of_o the_o chapter_n that_o there_o be_v give_v to_o the_o church_n diversity_n of_o gift_n diversity_n of_o administration_n diversity_n of_o operation_n 7._o and_o all_o these_o come_v from_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o this_o spirit_n that_o give_v these_o gift_n and_o administration_n and_o operation_n he_o give_v they_o all_o to_o this_o end_n that_o there_o may_v be_v a_o profit_n of_o the_o whole_a and_o present_o that_o you_o may_v understand_v his_o meaning_n tell_v we_o that_o look_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o natural_a body_n 12._o there_o be_v abundance_n of_o member_n join_v and_o every_o one_o have_v their_o several_a office_n for_o the_o good_a of_o all_o so_o be_v christ_n say_v he_o by_o christ_n there_o he_o do_v not_o mean_a jesus_n christ_n in_o his_o human_a nature_n only_o but_o christ_n mystical_a christ_n and_o all_o his_o member_n gather_v into_o one_o and_o then_o go_v on_o in_o the_o thirteen_o verse_n 13._o and_o tell_v we_o that_o by_o one_o spirit_n we_o be_v all_o baptise_v into_o one_o body_n whether_o jew_n or_o gentile_n bond_n or_o free_a and_o be_v all_o make_v to_o drink_v into_o one_o spirit_n and_o so_o throughout_o to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o chapter_n prosecute_v the_o same_o comparison_n of_o christ_n be_v as_o a_o natural_a head_n to_o his_o church_n and_o all_o the_o saint_n as_o natural_a member_n to_o christ_n and_o one_o to_o another_o and_o the_o duty_n which_o follow_v thereupon_o the_o other_o place_n be_v ephes._n 4_o from_o 12._o to_o 17._o in_o the_o beginning_n of_o the_o chapter_n explain_v he_o exhort_v they_o earnest_o to_o live_v in_o love_n and_o keep_v the_o unity_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o bond_n of_o peace_n to_o provoke_v they_o the_o better_a to_o it_o he_o show_v they_o verse_n 4._o 5_o and_o 6._o in_o how_o many_o thing_n they_o be_v one_o of_o which_o you_o shall_v hear_v more_o afterward_o then_o verse_n 7._o he_o add_v that_o each_o of_o they_o part_n the_o brain_n for_o its_o part_n and_o every_o joint_a and_o sinew_n for_o its_o part_n the_o whole_a body_n grow_v up_o to_o a_o full_a stature_n and_o all_o grow_v up_o together_o so_o have_v the_o lord_n ordain_v and_o cast_v it_o to_o be_v in_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n now_o this_o foundation_n be_v lay_v body_n that_o though_o the_o church_n be_v not_o christ_n natural_a body_n it_o be_v yet_o as_o his_o natural_a body_n the_o great_a question_n be_v wherein_o do_v this_o comparison_n or_o resemblance_n stand_v to_o that_o i_o answer_v first_o it_o be_v easy_a for_o a_o man_n to_o name_v many_o particular_n wherein_o the_o comparison_n will_v not_o hold_v betwixt_o the_o church_n and_o a_o natural_a body_n and_o it_o be_v as_o easy_a for_o a_o man_n to_o name_v many_o thing_n wherein_o they_o be_v very_o like_o one_o to_o another_o but_o we_o must_v not_o be_v wise_a beyond_o the_o scripture_n nor_o stretch_v it_o any_o further_a than_o the_o lord_n intend_v it_o i_o humble_o conceive_v that_o the_o comparison_n lie_v proper_o in_o these_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o as_o in_o the_o natural_a body_n the_o member_n and_o every_o member_n have_v a_o real_a union_n with_o the_o head_n for_o its_o own_o part_n have_v the_o same_o spirit_n animate_v it_o that_o be_v in_o the_o head_n and_o thereby_o have_v a_o communion_n with_o and_o dependence_n upon_o the_o head_n in_o all_o the_o office_n that_o the_o head_n can_v do_v for_o it_o so_o every_o particular_a christian_n or_o member_n of_o the_o church_n have_v a_o real_a indissoluble_a spiritual_a union_n and_o conjunction_n with_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n have_v his_o spirit_n communicate_v unto_o they_o which_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o all_o their_o communion_n the_o very_a root_n and_o principle_n of_o their_o spiritual_a life_n and_o which_o enable_v they_o every_o one_o for_o their_o part_n to_o live_v unto_o christ_n that_o be_v one_o second_o which_o be_v the_o thing_n i_o intend_v that_o as_o in_o the_o natural_a body_n all_o the_o member_n do_v not_o only_o meet_v in_o the_o head_n as_o all_o the_o line_n do_v meet_v in_o a_o centre_n and_o be_v one_o there_o though_o they_o do_v not_o touch_v one_o another_o anywhere_o else_o but_o they_o be_v all_o by_o the_o wonderful_a power_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n so_o contrive_v and_o compact_v and_o join_v

relation_n a_o lump_n of_o lead_n whilst_o it_o be_v in_o the_o lump_n it_o be_v a_o lump_n of_o base_a metal_n call_v lead_n melt_v this_o and_o mould_v it_o into_o the_o form_n of_o a_o beast_n what_o be_v it_o then_o it_o be_v but_o a_o leaden_a beast_n melt_v it_o and_o mould_v it_o again_o into_o the_o form_n of_o a_o man_n it_o be_v but_o a_o leaden_a man_n melt_v it_o and_o mould_v it_o again_o into_o the_o form_n of_o a_o angel_n it_o be_v but_o a_o leaden_a angel_n so_o i_o say_v take_v a_o carnal_a man_n a_o unregenerate_a man_n he_o be_v a_o carnal_a man_n whilst_o he_o profess_v no_o religion_n suppose_v he_o then_o to_o profess_v himself_o a_o protestant_n at_o large_a he_o be_v but_o a_o carnal_a protestant_n suppose_v he_o next_o to_o join_v himself_o into_o some_o church_n order_n let_v he_o join_v with_o those_o that_o be_v call_v of_o the_o presbyterian_a way_n he_o be_v a_o carnal_a presbyterian_a take_v he_o off_o from_o that_o put_v he_o into_o the_o congregational_a way_n what_o be_v he_o then_o a_o carnal_a congregational_a man_n join_v he_o next_o if_o you_o will_v to_o those_o who_o deny_v our_o baptism_n he_o be_v then_o but_o a_o carnal_a anabaptist_n he_o be_v still_o a_o carnal_a a_o ungodly_a man_n belong_v to_o the_o corporation_n of_o satan_n whatsoever_o his_o outside_n be_v and_o know_v you_o all_o for_o certain_a that_o no_o bastard_n no_o gibeonite_n no_o hypocrite_n no_o man_n unconverted_a what_o gift_n soever_o he_o may_v have_v what_o reputation_n soever_o he_o may_v have_v among_o man_n he_o be_v no_o member_n of_o
