pleasure_n nor_o be_v it_o at_o the_o mercy_n of_o those_o fury_n of_o revenge_n and_o malice_n and_o envy_n but_o in_o the_o room_n of_o these_o be_v come_v mildness_n and_o gentleness_n benignity_n and_o mercy_n and_o universal_a goodwill_n the_o gentile_a turn_v christian_n be_v not_o now_o addict_v to_o gluttony_n and_o drunkenness_n to_o chamber_v wantonness_n and_o suchlike_a revel_v and_o riotous_a course_n but_o he_o be_v temperate_a and_o chaste_a and_o keep_v these_o appetite_n of_o bodily_a pleasure_n within_o the_o bound_n which_o nature_n and_o approve_a custom_n which_o reason_n and_o law_n and_o religion_n have_v set_v he_o live_v in_o the_o constant_a exercise_n of_o a_o pure_a and_o spiritual_a religion_n and_o express_v a_o regard_n to_o god_n in_o his_o whole_a life_n acknowledge_v the_o divine_a perfection_n as_o well_o as_o god_n superiority_n over_o and_o right_o to_o he_o by_o his_o love_a and_o fear_v he_o above_o all_o and_o his_o constant_a study_n to_o please_v he_o in_o obedience_n to_o his_o law_n and_o imitation_n of_o his_o work_n he_o keep_v all_o his_o faculty_n in_o that_o due_a and_o natural_a order_n in_o which_o god_n place_v they_o when_o man_n come_v first_o out_o of_o his_o hand_n that_o be_v the_o body_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o will_n be_v under_o the_o conduct_n of_o the_o understanding_n he_o rid_v himself_o of_o all_o irregular_a appetite_n and_o disorderly_a passion_n and_o so_o walk_v not_o in_o those_o way_n of_o sensuality_n in_o which_o brutish-man_n be_v find_v and_o his_o conversation_n to_o other_o be_v innocent_a and_o simple_a full_a of_o plain-dealing_a and_o honesty_n adorn_v with_o mildness_n and_o equity_n nor_o have_v he_o any_o other_o design_n but_o those_o to_o which_o he_o be_v engage_v by_o the_o most_o undissembled_a and_o servant_n love_n in_o respect_n of_o other_o man_n the_o christian_a may_v be_v say_v to_o live_v a_o life_n of_o love_n for_o this_o be_v that_o which_o direct_v which_o engage_v he_o to_o all_o he_o do_v to_o they_o this_o be_v the_o predominant_a affection_n the_o most_o powerful_a and_o prevalent_a principle_n of_o all_o his_o action_n but_o i_o shall_v not_o now_o engage_v in_o a_o particular_a discourse_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o a_o christian_n life_n what_o have_v be_v say_v may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o show_v that_o the_o christian_n heart_n be_v purify_v and_o his_o life_n reform_v that_o he_o be_v not_o affect_v nor_o do_v he_o walk_v as_o other_o gentile_n who_o have_v not_o know_v christ_n if_o any_o shall_v think_v that_o i_o have_v set_v his_o holiness_n too_o high_a though_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o many_o have_v exemplify_v all_o that_o i_o have_v describe_v yet_o suppose_v the_o more_o common_a sort_n of_o christian_n who_o have_v not_o yet_o attain_v to_o all_o this_o perfection_n only_o they_o be_v earnest_o pursue_v and_o reach_v after_o it_o even_o such_o do_v far_o transcend_v the_o unchristened_a heathen_n and_o those_o of_o this_o low_a rank_n of_o christian_n have_v great_a peace_n and_o qulet_n of_o mind_n a_o thing_n to_o which_o the_o ignorant_a and_o superstitious_a the_o vicious_a and_o wicked_a among_o the_o heathen_n must_v be_v utter_a stranger_n for_o the_o wicked_a he_o be_v so_o full_a of_o guilty_a fear_n that_o he_o flee_v when_o no_o man_n pursue_v he_o and_o it_o be_v a_o eternal_a truth_n that_o there_o be_v no_o peace_n to_o the_o wicked_a if_o we_o will_v allow_v some_o of_o they_o not_o to_o have_v be_v wicked_a yet_o we_o must_v confess_v that_o their_o knowledge_n be_v far_o short_a of_o the_o christian_n and_o all_o ignorance_n and_o uncertainty_n must_v be_v attend_v with_o fear_n and_o unquietness_n but_o the_o christian_n clear_v and_o certain_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o himself_o of_o the_o undertake_n and_o performance_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o his_o own_o duty_n and_o the_o encouragement_n he_o have_v to_o that_o together_o with_o his_o sincere_a and_o honest_a endeavour_n to_o do_v what_o be_v good_a must_v lay_v a_o sure_a foundation_n of_o last_a peace_n and_o be_v a_o fountain_n of_o pleasure_n ever_o spring_v up_o in_o his_o soul_n thus_o i_o have_v brief_o consider_v the_o convert_v gentile_a in_o himself_o single_o but_o because_o man_n be_v weak_a and_o dependent_a and_o not_o sufficient_a for_o his_o own_o happiness_n i_o will_v now_o go_v on_o to_o show_v how_o it_o be_v with_o he_o second_o in_o respect_n of_o other_o man_n and_o of_o 1._o those_o that_o be_v no_o christian_n as_o wellâ—_n as_o 2._o of_o those_o that_o be_v 1._o those_o that_o be_v no_o christian_n if_o they_o have_v any_o remainder_n of_o love_n to_o goodness_n will_v esteem_v and_o reverence_n that_o admirable_a virtue_n which_o they_o see_v the_o christian_a practice_n for_o his_o life_n be_v a_o exemplification_n of_o the_o precept_n of_o the_o gospel_n must_v needs_o make_v every_o beholder_n in_o love_n with_o it_o the_o christian_n universal_n love_n his_o goodwill_n to_o all_o man_n must_v constrain_v all_o man_n to_o love_v he_o and_o whilst_o he_o be_v intent_n on_o do_v good_a to_o they_o as_o by_o his_o profession_n he_o be_v oblige_v it_o be_v not_o likely_a that_o they_o will_v do_v evil_a to_o he_o i_o grant_v that_o sometime_o this_o may_v happen_v that_o man_n may_v hurt_v we_o whilst_o we_o be_v follow_v that_o which_o be_v good_a but_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v for_o the_o most_o part_n through_o a_o persuasion_n that_o such_o man_n be_v mere_a pretender_n and_o not_o what_o they_o seem_v and_o i_o be_o sure_a it_o be_v the_o likely_a and_o therefore_o the_o wise_a way_n we_o can_v take_v to_o prevent_v opposition_n and_o harm_n from_o other_o man_n for_o no_o man_n will_v light_o set_v himself_o against_o he_o who_o be_v do_v good_a but_o if_o any_o shall_v think_v that_o this_o be_v the_o way_n that_o will_v lead_v he_o into_o all_o suffering_n from_o other_o and_o that_o if_o he_o cease_v from_o evil_a he_o certain_o make_v himself_o a_o prey_n that_o his_o innocence_n be_v the_o white_a mark_n at_o which_o the_o wicked_a aim_n and_o that_o they_o who_o be_v resolve_v to_o be_v wicked_a themselves_o will_v be_v angry_a at_o every_o one_o that_o be_v more_o righteous_a than_o themselves_o
as_o they_o account_v unnatural_a precept_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o disparage_v his_o whole_a gospel_n i_o hope_v my_o discourse_n have_v show_v both_o how_o reasonable_a and_o how_o natural_a it_o be_v and_o that_o it_o have_v take_v away_o all_o the_o pretence_n which_o weak_a and_o inconsiderate_a or_o ill-natured_a man_n have_v for_o their_o neglect_n of_o it_o so_o that_o i_o have_v prevent_v myself_o of_o what_o i_o propound_v to_o do_v next_o viz._n iii_o to_o show_v the_o falseness_n of_o those_o objection_n which_o be_v offer_v against_o it_o the_o most_o considerable_a i_o think_v be_v these_o object_n 1._o it_o be_v unnatural_a to_o love_v one_o that_o do_v and_o intend_v we_o mischief_n object_n 2._o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o hate_v for_o our_o own_o defence_n and_o preservation_n object_n 3._o example_n do_v incline_v we_o to_o it_o object_n 4._o if_o we_o hate_v our_o enemy_n they_o will_v expect_v and_o be_v afraid_a of_o this_o and_o so_o will_v be_v deter_v from_o be_v our_o enemy_n in_o answer_n to_o the_o first_o objection_n 1._o i_o have_v show_v in_o my_o explication_n that_o we_o be_v not_o require_v to_o love_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o itself_o evil_a 2._o i_o have_v in_o my_o follow_a discourse_n show_v that_o this_o evil_n may_v be_v a_o cause_n of_o much_o good_a unto_o we_o here_o but_o especial_o hereafter_o or_o if_o of_o no_o good_a to_o we_o yet_o there_o be_v so_o much_o good_a to_o other_o as_o may_v make_v our_o love_n prevail_v above_o hatred_n for_o the_o second_o objection_n i_o have_v make_v out_o that_o hatred_n be_v not_o the_o likely_a method_n to_o be_v rid_v of_o this_o evil_a or_o to_o prevent_v it_o for_o the_o future_a for_o the_o 3d_o objection_n i_o have_v show_v that_o we_o must_v not_o follow_v example_n to_o do_v evil._n it_o may_v become_v ape_n and_o child_n to_o be_v whole_o determine_v by_o example_n and_o to_o imitate_v every_o thing_n they_o see_v but_o it_o be_v very_o unworthy_a of_o they_o who_o have_v the_o use_n of_o their_o reason_n as_o for_o the_o four_o objection_n i_o answer_v 1._o this_o be_v no_o method_n to_o remove_v or_o lessen_v but_o to_o continue_v and_o increase_v their_o hatred_n it_o be_v common_o say_v man_n hate_v what_o they_o fear_v these_o two_o differ_v very_o little_a we_o hate_v all_o evil_a and_o fear_v that_o which_o be_v absent_a but_o love_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n removes_z this_o evil_a from_o the_o mind_n and_o therefore_o 2._o tend_v to_o reform_v and_o mend_v the_o offender_n himself_o it_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o free_v he_o from_o his_o malice_n which_o be_v not_o extinguish_v but_o rather_o inflame_v by_o that_o which_o increase_v his_o fear_n for_o notwithstanding_o that_o his_o intention_n and_o mind_n be_v as_o evil_a as_o before_o fear_v not_o at_o all_o abate_v his_o desire_n of_o do_v harm_n but_o only_o cut_v short_a his_o opportunity_n and_o therefore_o 3._o it_o will_v if_o it_o increase_v his_o hatred_n and_o lessen_v his_o opportunity_n make_v he_o watch_v every_o little_a occasion_n of_o do_v the_o mischief_n he_o design_n and_o it_o be_v hard_o for_o we_o to_o keep_v such_o a_o constant_a and_o strict_a watch_n as_o to_o give_v no_o advantage_n to_o one_o who_o seek_v it_o if_o all_o these_o reason_n which_o i_o have_v propose_v prevail_v not_o with_o we_o to_o put_v in_o practice_n this_o precept_n of_o love_v our_o enemy_n yet_o let_v the_o authority_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n persuade_v we_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o i_o who_o practise_v thus_o myself_o i_o who_o you_o be_v who_o have_v right_o to_o you_o and_o all_o man_n i_o who_o know_v what_o be_v good_a for_o you_o better_a than_o you_o do_v yourselves_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o love_v your_o enemy_n all_o the_o inference_n i_o shall_v make_v be_v that_o then_o we_o must_v love_v those_o who_o be_v not_o our_o enemy_n and_o still_o much_o more_o our_o friend_n and_o those_o that_o love_v we_o if_o we_o must_v love_v those_o that_o intend_v and_o practice_v evil_a against_o we_o much_o more_o those_o that_o desire_n and_o do_v we_o good_n if_o he_o that_o love_v not_o his_o enemy_n be_v short_a of_o a_o christian_a he_o who_o love_v not_o his_o friend_n be_v worse_a than_o a_o infidel_n and_o if_o he_o be_v so_o than_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n will_v not_o save_v he_o he_o that_o be_v a_o pagan_a though_o he_o seem_v a_o christian_n shall_v fall_v under_o the_o condemnation_n of_o unbeliever_n i_o conclude_v all_o with_o remind_v you_o of_o my_o intention_n in_o this_o discourse_n which_o be_v to_o serve_v the_o design_n of_o love_n by_o remove_v one_o of_o the_o great_a obstacle_n of_o it_o out_o of_o the_o way_n let_v we_o all_o therefore_o be_v persuade_v to_o love_v universal_o to_o be_v please_v with_o good_a wherever_o we_o see_v it_o even_o in_o our_o enemy_n to_o procure_v it_o wherever_o it_o be_v want_v and_o there_o be_v any_o capacity_n of_o it_o let_v we_o be_v so_o wise_a as_o to_o serve_v ourselves_o and_o religion_n of_o all_o the_o condition_n of_o life_n which_o we_o be_v in_o by_o make_v they_o serviceable_a to_o love_n and_o goodwill_n which_o assure_o be_v the_o best_a life_n we_o can_v live_v that_o which_o will_v make_v we_o most_o acceptable_a to_o god_n most_o easy_a and_o delightful_a to_o ourselves_o and_o most_o useful_a and_o pleasant_a to_o other_o it_o be_v the_o best_a that_o earth_n or_o heaven_n be_v capable_a of_o god_n of_o his_o infinite_a mercy_n grant_v unto_o we_o the_o true_a spirit_n of_o christ_n that_o spirit_n who_o fruit_n be_v love_n and_o joy_n and_o peace_n meekness_n long-suffering_a gentleness_n patience_n goodness_n faith_n and_o temperance_n that_o no_o law_n may_v be_v against_o we_o that_o we_o may_v begin_v to_o live_v that_o life_n here_o which_o we_o hope_v to_o live_v hereafter_o and_o which_o glorify_a saint_n and_o angel_n now_o live_v in_o the_o high_a heaven_n you_o the_o life_n which_o be_v god_n peculiar_a or_o be_v proper_a to_o himself_o who_o god_n have_v anoint_v viz._n to_o be_v absolute_a over_o man_n faith_n or_o manner_n he_o require_v they_o shall_v not_o challenge_v to_o themselves_o such_o a_o sovereignty_n as_o admit_v of_o no_o control_v such_o a_o authority_n from_o whence_o no_o appeal_n may_v be_v make_v or_o which_o must_v not_o be_v contradict_v they_o must_v sure_o our_o saviour_n do_v not_o condemn_v the_o word_n but_o as_o they_o carry_v a_o bad_a signification_n and_o do_v humour_n man_n pride_n he_o be_v displease_v that_o the_o pharisee_n will_v under_o these_o title_n arrogate_v a_o power_n that_o do_v not_o belong_v to_o they_o and_o that_o they_o can_v be_v so_o huge_o please_v with_o a_o lie_n of_o their_o own_o make_n that_o they_o can_v be_v delight_v with_o the_o empty_a title_n of_o master_n and_o doctor_n which_o themselves_o have_v assume_v and_o it_o be_v a_o sufficient_a argument_n that_o he_o do_v not_o forbid_v the_o use_n of_o these_o title_n because_o himself_o allow_v and_o use_v that_o of_o father_n and_o mother_n and_o his_o apostle_n st._n paul_n call_v himself_o a_o father_n and_o a_o teacher_n of_o the_o gentile_n which_o we_o must_v think_v he_o will_v not_o have_v do_v if_o he_o have_v understand_v our_o saviour_n to_o have_v absolute_o forbid_v it_o and_o sure_o he_o will_v have_v understand_v it_o if_o it_o have_v be_v so_o have_v say_v what_o i_o think_v necessary_a for_o the_o explication_n of_o these_o word_n i_o proceed_v in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o lay_v down_o those_o proposition_n which_o may_v be_v deduce_v from_o and_o also_o those_o that_o be_v more_o express_o contain_v in_o the_o word_n i._o christian_n have_v a_o master_n and_o a_o father_n in_o the_o large_a notion_n wherein_o these_o word_n be_v sometime_o take_v it_o be_v true_a of_o all_o man_n in_o the_o world_n for_o every_o man_n live_v be_v dependent_a and_o subject_a they_o may_v all_o make_v that_o confession_n it_o be_v he_o that_o have_v make_v we_o and_o not_o we_o ourselves_o we_o be_v his_o people_n and_o the_o sheep_n of_o his_o pasture_n it_o be_v true_a also_o in_o that_o more_o restrain_a sense_n wherein_o these_o title_n signify_v instruct_v and_o teach_v and_o thus_o i_o understand_v they_o here_o for_o all_o man_n will_v acknowledge_v some_o superior_a who_o teach_v they_o and_o from_o who_o they_o can_v make_v no_o appeal_n that_o this_o be_v very_o natural_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o every_o man_n thus_o to_o think_v will_v appear_v if_o we_o consider_v how_o general_o the_o most_o part_n acquiesce_v in_o the_o testimony_n of_o man_n and_o it_o be_v almost_o necessary_a that_o both_o they_o and_o other_o shall_v do_v so_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o way_n we_o be_v all_o educate_v for_o we_o take_v all_o our_o word_n upon_o trust_n from_o other_o and_o we_o derive_v our_o action_n too_o from_o a_o imitation_n of_o what_o we_o see_v they_o do_v and_o whilst_o we_o do_v thus_o we_o acknowledge_v superior_n and_o for_o they_o that_o be_v more_o wise_a that_o perceive_v themselves_o to_o stand_v upon_o pretty_a equal_a ground_n with_o other_o man_n yet_o they_o find_v they_o be_v liable_a to_o be_v deceive_v and_o therefore_o they_o make_v their_o last_o appeal_n to_o the_o veracity_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n this_o make_v the_o principle_n from_o which_o they_o infer_v the_o truth_n and_o certainty_n of_o all_o the_o knowledge_n they_o have_v there_o be_v no_o man_n who_o consider_v himself_o and_o his_o way_n of_o work_v but_o will_v acknowledge_v he_o be_v behold_v to_o some_o other_o than_o himself_o for_o his_o understanding_n but_o whether_o he_o will_v own_v it_o or_o no_o there_o be_v a_o light_n that_o enlighten_v every_o
