formality_n the_o state_n of_o the_o controversy_n and_o our_o sense_n thereof_o be_v thus_o clear_o state_v will_v both_o obviate_v many_o objection_n and_o make_v the_o answer_n to_o other_o more_o brief_a and_o easy_a i_o shall_v first_o prove_v this_o spiritual_a prayer_n by_o some_o short_a consideration_n from_o scripture_n and_o then_o answer_v the_o objection_n of_o our_o opposer_n which_o and_o concurrence_n appear_v abundant_o from_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n rom._n 8.26.27_o likewise_o the_o spirit_n also_o help_v our_o infirmity_n for_o we_o know_v not_o what_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o as_o we_o ought_v but_o the_o spirit_n itself_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o with_o groan_n which_o can_v be_v utter_v and_o he_o that_o search_v the_o heart_n know_v what_o be_v yea_o it_o be_v frequent_a both_o among_o papist_n and_o protestant_n for_o they_o first_o to_o leap_v as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o their_o vain_a light_n and_o profane_a conversation_n at_o their_o set_a hour_n and_o season_n and_o fall_v to_o their_o customary_a devotion_n and_o then_o when_o it_o be_v scarce_o finish_v and_o the_o word_n to_o god_n scarce_o out_o the_o former_a profane_a talk_n come_v after_o it_o so_o that_o the_o same_o wicked_a profane_a spirit_n of_o this_o world_n act_v they_o in_o both_o
to_o he_o though_o less_o agreeable_a to_o the_o carnal_a and_o outward_a sense_n notwithstanding_o god_n condescension_n to_o the_o jew_n in_o such_o thing_n we_o see_v that_o that_o part_n in_o man_n which_o delight_v to_o follow_v its_o own_o invention_n can_v not_o be_v restrain_v nor_o yet_o satisfy_v with_o all_o these_o observation_n but_o that_o oftentimes_o they_o will_v be_v either_o etc._n this_o complaint_n may_v at_o this_o day_n be_v no_o less_o just_o make_v as_o to_o many_o bear_v the_o name_n of_o christian_n who_o have_v introduce_v many_o thing_n of_o this_o kind_n partly_o borrow_v from_o the_o jew_n which_o they_o more_o tenacious_o stick_v to_o and_o more_o earnest_o contend_v for_o than_o for_o the_o weighty_a point_n of_o christianity_n because_o that_o ignorant_a in_o religious_a controversy_n who_o understand_v not_o how_o much_o debate_n contention_n jangle_v and_o quarrel_v there_o have_v be_v among_o those_o call_a christian_n so_o that_o i_o may_v safe_o say_v the_o controversy_n about_o they_o to_o wit_n about_o their_o number_n nature_n virtue_n efficacy_n administration_n and_o other_o thing_n have_v be_v more_o than_o about_o any_o other_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n whether_o as_o betwixt_o papist_n and_o protestant_n or_o among_o protestant_n betwixt_o themselves_o and_o how_o great_a prejudice_n these_o controversy_n have_v bring_v to_o christian_n be_v very_o obvious_a whereas_o the_o thing_n contend_v for_o among_o they_o be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n but_o empty_a shadow_n and_o mere_a outside_n thing_n as_o i_o hope_v hereafter_o to_o make_v appear_v to_o the_o patient_a and_o unprejudicate_a reader_n §_o ii_o that_o which_o come_v first_o under_o observation_n be_v the_o name_n sacrament_n which_o be_v of_o scripture_n language_n for_o present_o the_o great_a contest_v about_o the_o number_n of_o they_o will_v evanish_v since_o there_o be_v no_o term_n use_v in_o scripture_n that_o can_v be_v make_v use_n of_o whether_o we_o call_v they_o institution_n ordinance_n precept_n commandment_n appointment_n or_o law_n etc._n etc._n that_o will_v afford_v ground_n for_o such_o a_o debate_n since_o neither_o will_n papist_n affirm_v that_o there_o be_v only_o seven_o or_o protestant_n only_o two_o of_o any_o of_o these_o foremention_v if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o this_o controversy_n arise_v from_o the_o definition_n of_o the_o thing_n obj._n as_o well_o as_o from_o the_o name_n it_o will_v be_v find_v otherwise_o answ._n for_o whatever_o way_n we_o take_v their_o defini-nition_a of_o a_o sacrament_n whether_o as_o a_o outward_a visible_a sign_n whereby_o inward_a grace_n be_v confer_v or_o only_o signify_v this_o definition_n will_v agree_v to_o many_o thing_n which_o neither_o papist_n nor_o protestant_n will_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v sacrament_n if_o they_o be_v express_v under_o the_o name_n of_o seal_v ordinance_n as_o some_o do_v i_o can_v never_o see_v neither_o by_o reason_n nor_o scripture_n how_o this_o title_n can_v be_v appropriate_a to_o they_o more_o than_o to_o any_o other_o christian_n religious_a performance_n for_o that_o must_v needs_o proper_o be_v a_o seal_v ordinance_n which_o make_v the_o person_n receive_v it_o infallible_o certain_a of_o the_o promise_n or_o thing_n seal_v to_o they_o if_o it_o be_v say_v it_o be_v so_o to_o they_o that_o concern_v the_o supper_n of_o these_o sacrament_n so_o call_v baptism_n be_v always_o first_o number_v which_o be_v the_o subject_n of_o the_o present_a proposition_n in_o who_o explanation_n i_o shall_v first_o demonstrate_v and_o prove_v our_o judgement_n and_o then_o answer_v the_o objection_n and_o reâ—ute_v the_o sentiment_n of_o our_o opposer_n as_o to_o the_o first_o part_n these_o thing_n follow_v which_o be_v brief_o comprehend_v in_o the_o proposition_n come_v to_o be_v propose_v and_o prove_v §_o iii_o first_o that_o there_o be_v but_o one_o baptism_n as_o well_o as_o but_o one_o lord_n one_o faith_n etc._n etc._n second_o that_o this_o one_o baptism_n which_o be_v the_o baptism_n of_o christ_n be_v not_o a_o wash_n with_o or_o dip_v in_o water_n but_o a_o be_v baptise_a by_o the_o spirit_n three_o that_o the_o baptism_n of_o john_n be_v but_o a_o figure_n of_o this_o and_o therefore_o as_o the_o figure_n to_o give_v place_n to_o the_o substance_n which_o though_o it_o be_v to_o continue_v yet_o the_o other_o be_v cease_v as_o for_o the_o first_o viz._n that_o there_o be_v but_o one_o baptism_n there_o need_v no_o other_o proof_n than_o the_o word_n of_o the_o

here_o deliver_v with_o its_o consistency_n and_o harmony_n as_o well_o in_o itself_o as_o with_o the_o scripture_n of_o truth_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o thou_o will_v say_v with_o i_o and_o many_o more_o that_o this_o be_v the_o spiritual_a day_n of_o christ_n appearance_n wherein_o he_o be_v again_o reveal_v the_o ancient_a path_n of_o truth_n and_o righteousness_n for_o thou_o may_v observe_v here_o the_o christian_a religion_n in_o all_o its_o part_n true_o establish_v and_o vindicate_v as_o it_o be_v a_o live_n inward_a spiritual_a pure_a and_o substantial_a thing_n and_o not_o a_o mere_a form_n show_v shadow_n notion_n and_o opinion_n as_o too_o many_o have_v hitherto_o hold_v it_o who_o fruit_n declare_v they_o want_v that_o which_o they_o bear_v the_o name_n of_o and_o yet_o many_o of_o those_o be_v so_o in_o love_n with_o their_o empty_a form_n and_o shadow_n that_o they_o cease_v not_o to_o calumniate_v we_o for_o commend_v and_o call_v they_o to_o the_o substance_n as_o if_o we_o therefore_o deny_v or_o neglect_v the_o true_a form_n and_o outward_a part_n of_o christianity_n which_o indeed_o be_v as_o god_n the_o searcher_n of_o heart_n know_v a_o very_a great_a slander_n thus_o because_o we_o have_v desire_v people_n earnest_o to_o feel_v after_o god_n near_o and_o in_o themselves_o tell_v they_o that_o their_o notion_n of_o god_n as_o he_o be_v beyond_o the_o cloud_n will_v little_o avail_v they_o if_o they_o do_v not_o feel_v he_o near_o hence_o they_o have_v seek_v malicious_o to_o infer_v that_o we_o deny_v any_o god_n except_o that_o which_o be_v within_o we_o because_o we_o tell_v people_n that_o it_o be_v the_o light_n and_o the_o law_n within_o and_o not_o the_o letter_n without_o that_o can_v true_o tell_v they_o their_o condition_n and_o lead_v they_o out_o of_o all_o evil_a hence_o they_o say_v we_o vilify_v the_o scripture_n and_o set_v up_o our_o own_o imagination_n above_o they_o because_o we_o tell_v they_o that_o it_o be_v not_o their_o talk_n or_o believe_v of_o christ_n outward_a life_n suffering_n death_n and_o resurrection_n no_o more_o than_o the_o jew_n cry_v the_o temple_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o temple_n of_o the_o lord_n that_o will_v serve_v their_o turn_n or_o justify_v they_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n but_o that_o they_o must_v know_v christ_n in_o they_o who_o they_o have_v crucify_v to_o be_v raise_v and_o to_o justify_v they_o and_o redeem_v they_o from_o their_o iniquity_n hence_o they_o say_v we_o deny_v the_o life_n death_n and_o suffering_n of_o christ_n justification_n by_o his_o blood_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n through_o he_o because_o we_o tell_v they_o while_o they_o be_v talk_v and_o determine_v about_o the_o resurrection_n that_o they_o have_v more_o need_n to_o know_v the_o just_a one_o who_o they_o have_v slay_v raise_v in_o themselves_o and_o to_o be_v sure_a they_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o first_o resurrection_n and_o that_o if_o this_o be_v they_o will_v be_v the_o more_o capable_a to_o judge_n of_o the_o second_o hence_o
