great_a purpose_n again_o it_o be_v most_o evident_a to_o consider_v man_n that_o it_o be_v the_o happiness_n of_o the_o state_n of_o innocency_n that_o man_n have_v nothing_o else_o to_o do_v but_o to_o worship_n and_o praise_v his_o maker_n at_o lest_o nothing_o that_o may_v divert_v he_o from_o it_o and_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v our_o chief_a happiness_n in_o the_o state_n of_o glory_n to_o be_v free_v from_o all_o cumbersome_a labour_n and_o care_n and_o all_o distract_n prosecution_n and_o carnal_a pleasure_n and_o that_o we_o shall_v then_o continual_o attend_v divine_a office_n as_o that_o which_o be_v our_o only_a perfect_a bliss_n and_o felicity_n and_o therefore_o shall_v esteem_v ourselves_o the_o more_o happy_a for_o have_v a_o recess_n from_o worldly_a business_n now_o that_o we_o may_v more_o free_o and_o frequent_o attend_v divine_a office_n again_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o god_n who_o first_o make_v all_o thing_n for_o himself_o create_v again_o his_o church_n and_o people_n that_o they_o may_v be_v to_o the_o praise_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o grace_n eph._n 1._o and_o all_o christian_a assembly_n be_v so_o constitute_v and_o holy_a office_n appoint_v therein_o that_o they_o may_v be_v so_o therefore_o for_o man_n to_o call_v themselves_o christian_n and_o member_n of_o such_o assembly_n and_o yet_o despise_v public_a worship_n be_v a_o great_a affront_n to_o god_n and_o to_o the_o church_n which_o have_v well_o appoint_v these_o daily_a office_n of_o divine_a worship_n as_o be_v agreeable_a to_o reason_n to_o the_o divine_a prescription_n i_o must_v believe_v these_o kind_n of_o man_n that_o think_v our_o daily_a attendance_n at_o prayer_n be_v be_v righteous_a over_o much_o be_v not_o move_v hereunto_o by_o any_o thing_n of_o reason_n or_o sober_a consideration_n but_o be_v whole_o influence_v by_o pride_n or_o covetousness_n or_o other_o carnal_a affection_n which_o hinder_v the_o exercise_n of_o their_o rational_a faculty_n and_o make_v they_o live_v more_o of_o the_o animal_n than_o the_o divine_a life_n i._n e._n more_o like_a beast_n than_o man_n and_o so_o long_o as_o they_o be_v such_o we_o must_v expect_v no_o other_o language_n from_o they_o for_o the_o carnal_a mind_n a_o man_n that_o discourse_v as_o a_o mere_a animal_n perceive_v not_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n neither_o can_v he_o know_v the_o beam_n that_o be_v in_o their_o own_o eye_n and_o then_o shall_v they_o see_v clear_o to_o pluck_v out_o the_o mote_n that_o be_v in_o their_o brother_n for_o a_o extreme_a in_o this_o matter_n if_o any_o man_n be_v suppose_v to_o be_v guilty_a thereof_o be_v no_o more_o in_o comparison_n of_o their_o total_a neglect_n and_o contempt_n of_o god_n and_o his_o public_a worship_n than_o a_o mote_n to_o a_o beam_n as_o they_o will_v find_v at_o the_o last_o the_o second_o sort_n to_o who_o i_o shall_v apply_v myself_o and_o for_o who_o sake_n i_o chief_o undertake_v this_o work_n be_v such_o as_o have_v a_o love_n for_o these_o holy_a office_n and_o daily_o frequent_v they_o to_o who_o my_o earnest_a request_n be_v that_o they_o will_v persist_v in_o the_o good_a way_n they_o have_v begin_v attend_v to_o the_o best_a manner_n of_o performance_n and_o make_v all_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o life_n answer_v to_o their_o devotion_n herein_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o such_o who_o do_v understand_v the_o ground_n and_o reason_n upon_o which_o our_o public_a service_n be_v first_o order_v and_o have_v take_v up_o this_o practice_n in_o a_o sense_n of_o their_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o man_n will_v easy_o and_o effectual_o
it_o but_o since_o they_o that_o be_v against_o we_o on_o both_o side_n be_v so_o earnest_a in_o defend_v their_o own_o way_n and_o reproach_v we_o the_o minister_n shall_v not_o be_v remiss_a in_o counter-working_a such_o ill_a design_n by_o the_o most_o rational_a and_o convince_v demonstration_n join_v with_o fervency_n and_o importunity_n of_o persuasion_n in_o their_o preach_v on_o this_o subject_a and_o here_o i_o must_v first_o observe_v that_o general_a exhortation_n to_o piety_n and_o holiness_n how_o excellent_o and_o passionate_o soever_o deliver_v by_o our_o minister_n though_o they_o may_v make_v they_o admire_v and_o follow_v and_o that_o by_o man_n of_o several_a persuasion_n yet_o they_o will_v not_o have_v the_o effect_n such_o shall_v intend_v if_o man_n mind_n be_v corrupt_v with_o false_a notion_n about_o the_o exercise_v and_o express_v of_o piety_n and_o holiness_n but_o as_o the_o best_a food_n may_v do_v man_n hurt_v by_o reason_n of_o ill_a humour_n in_o the_o stomach_n so_o may_v such_o good_a doctrine_n through_o ill_a principle_n in_o the_o understanding_n such_o as_o think_v the_o best_a way_n to_o be_v holy_a be_v to_o consecrate_v themselves_o in_o the_o blood_n of_o heretic_n as_o the_o papist_n or_o of_o such_o as_o will_v not_o let_v christ_n rule_v over_o they_o as_o some_o enthusiast_n believe_v that_o as_o the_o levite_n be_v by_o moses_n command_v to_o consecrate_v themselves_o every_o man_n on_o his_o son_n and_o on_o his_o brother_n that_o have_v commit_v idolatry_n in_o worship_v the_o calf_n so_o they_o may_v consecrate_v themselves_o by_o this_o and_o such_o as_o think_v the_o way_n of_o holiness_n lie_v in_o distinction_n of_o word_n and_o phrase_n and_o in_o their_o garb_n and_o garment_n or_o in_o strictness_n in_o some_o indifferent_a and_o apocryphal_a observance_n not_o enjoin_v by_o god_n nor_o the_o church_n nay_o if_o they_o think_v it_o lie_v in_o be_v above_o ordinance_n and_o reject_v both_o the_o sacrament_n in_o rail_v against_o god_n minister_n and_o censure_v all_o their_o neighbour_n that_o be_v not_o of_o their_o sect_n and_o call_v we_o all_o ignoramus_n and_o persecutor_n or_o which_o be_v most_o my_o subject_n in_o condemn_v all_o form_n of_o prayer_n and_o all_o superiority_n among_o minister_n as_o popish_a and_o anti-christian_n and_o applaud_a independency_n as_o the_o only_a scriptural_a church-government_n and_o the_o exit_fw-la tempore_fw-la way_n as_o the_o only_a acceptable_a mode_n of_o worship_n and_o that_o in_o public_a as_o well_o as_o private_a i_o say_v all_o these_o and_o whatever_o other_o of_o like_a kind_n of_o which_o there_o be_v abundance_n in_o the_o world_n when_o they_o hear_v the_o most_o powerful_a and_o passionate_a exhortation_n to_o piety_n in_o general_a term_n they_o make_v the_o application_n to_o zeal_n in_o their_o own_o way_n wherefore_o i_o think_v those_o minister_n who_o believe_v that_o in_o a_o sincere_a and_o diligent_a improvement_n of_o the_o order_n of_o our_o church_n we_o may_v exercise_n the_o most_o fervent_a devotion_n towards_o god_n and_o the_o most_o pleasant_a communion_n of_o saint_n in_o holy_a worship_n and_o also_o prosecute_v the_o sanctification_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o life_n in_o a_o way_n to_o be_v prefer_v before_o all_o other_o way_n wherein_o man_n pride_n themselves_o i_o say_v those_o minister_n that_o believe_v this_o as_o all_o of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o especial_o those_o concern_v in_o its_o government_n i_o hope_v very_o do_v shall_v not_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o preach_v up_o piety_n in_o general_n but_o shall_v think_v themselves_o oblige_v to_o make_v such_o particular_a application_n to_o a_o devout_a and_o constant_a attendance_n on_o the_o common_a prayer_n as_o a_o principal_a act_n of_o it_o as_o may_v prevent_v such_o abuse_n of_o their_o sermon_n by_o man_n of_o ill_a principle_n and_o make_v they_o most_o serviceable_a to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o peace_n and_o welfare_n of_o this_o church_n if_o we_o observe_v the_o sermon_n and_o book_n of_o the_o nonconformist_n on_o this_o subject_a it_o will_v appear_v that_o all_o their_o discourse_n of_o piety_n have_v always_o a_o secret_a and_o very_o frequent_o a_o open_a relation_n to_o the_o exercise_n thereof_o in_o their_o own_o way_n and_o very_o bad_a reflection_n on_o we_o as_o be_v but_o a_o kind_n of_o pageantry_n and_o ostentation_n of_o devotion_n and_o mere_a formality_n and_o outside_n without_o that_o life_n and_o power_n which_o make_v it_o acceptable_a to_o god_n and_o that_o such_o devotion_n be_v no_o evidence_n that_o we_o be_v true_o regenerate_v and_o his_o elect_a people_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o confirm_v their_o disciple_n in_o their_o own_o way_n and_o hinder_v they_o from_o so_o much_o as_o try_v we_o and_o shall_v the_o minister_n of_o our_o church_n be_v outdo_v by_o those_o they_o account_v schismatic_n do_v not_o the_o ancient_a orderly_a and_o solemn_a way_n of_o our_o church_n deserve_v as_o much_o zeal_n as_o the_o novel_a way_n cry_v up_o with_o they_o be_v not_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o salvation_n of_o man_n soul_n as_o much_o concern_v in_o be_v devout_a in_o our_o way_n as_o in_o they_o be_v not_o a_o great_a love_n to_o the_o common_a prayer_n a_o delight_n to_o attend_v constant_o on_o the_o office_n thereof_o and_o a_o fervent_a devotion_n therein_o as_o good_a a_o sign_n of_o true_a grace_n as_o the_o love_n of_o extempore_o prayer_n and_o a_o delight_n in_o go_v frequent_o to_o private_a meeting_n be_v not_o the_o neglect_n of_o god_n worship_n in_o our_o way_n especial_o by_o those_o that_o profess_v to_o approve_v the_o order_n we_o have_v for_o it_o a_o sign_n of_o the_o deadly_a state_n of_o carnal-mindedness_a and_o unregenerateness_n from_o which_o man_n must_v be_v convert_v except_o they_o will_v be_v damn_v and_o so_o to_o be_v esteem_v by_o we_o as_o well_o as_o the_o neglect_n thereof_o in_o their_o way_n all_o man_n know_v that_o no_o way_n or_o mode_n of_o religion_n be_v so_o good_a that_o man_n shall_v be_v think_v good_a christian_n mere_o for_o be_v educate_v therein_o and_o profess_v to_o approve_v the_o same_o but_o such_o education_n and_o profession_n will_v aggravate_v their_o sin_n if_o they_o be_v not_o serious_a in_o that_o way_n of_o religion_n they_o approve_v and_o so_o will_v the_o excellency_n and_o goodness_n thereof_o if_o they_o slight_v it_o and_o shall_v not_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n who_o must_v bear_v the_o blame_n for_o ever_o if_o god_n be_v dishonour_v or_o soul_n damn_v through_o their_o default_n consider_v this_o and_o persuade_v man_n to_o a_o great_a love_n to_o god_n and_o to_o his_o worship_n in_o the_o way_n of_o this_o church_n and_o so_o to_o order_v their_o concern_v with_o relation_n thereunto_o that_o they_o may_v approve_v themselves_o true_o convert_v and_o such_o as_o shall_v be_v save_v it_o be_v seriousness_n in_o religion_n that_o speak_v man_n true_a christian_n and_o this_o join_v with_o constant_a attendancy_n on_o religious_a duty_n which_o be_v the_o fruit_n thereof_o be_v their_o security_n against_o apostasy_n of_o all_o kind_n and_o i_o must_v say_v this_o that_o however_o there_o may_v be_v and_o i_o be_o confident_a there_o be_v some_o of_o all_o the_o different_a way_n of_o religious_a worship_n that_o be_v true_o convert_v and_o shall_v be_v save_v yet_o none_o that_o i_o have_v know_v be_v better_a christian_n than_o they_o who_o be_v serious_a and_o true_o devout_a in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n i_o know_v there_o be_v many_o hypocrite_n that_o seem_v so_o and_o be_v not_o among_o we_o as_o well_o as_o other_o but_o i_o speak_v of_o the_o sincere_a and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o sure_a minister_n shall_v think_v it_o their_o glory_n and_o joy_n when_o they_o can_v bring_v man_n from_o a_o carnal_a and_o unregenerate_a state_n to_o that_o which_o be_v true_o spiritual_a and_o gracious_a it_o have_v be_v some_o grief_n to_o i_o to_o see_v that_o minister_n on_o both_o extreme_n shall_v outdo_v we_o in_o this_o matter_n those_o of_o the_o papist_n seem_v to_o exult_v not_o only_a when_o they_o can_v bring_v one_o of_o our_o religion_n over_o to_o their_o church_n but_o when_o any_o of_o their_o own_o turn_n from_o a_o worldly_a secular_a life_n to_o that_o which_o they_o call_v religious_a and_o spiritual_a and_o the_o separatist_n not_o only_o pretend_v to_o leave_v we_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o forsake_v the_o world_n and_o devote_v themselves_o to_o god_n but_o to_o set_v up_o their_o meeting_n on_o purpose_n to_o call_v other_o to_o a_o more_o spiritual_a life_n in_o
