day_n but_o what_o day_n soever_o shall_v be_v by_o god_n solemn_o set_v or_o be_v set_v apart_o for_o holy_a rest_n and_o the_o command_n will_v run_v for_o our_o observe_v the_o lord_n day_n the_o even_o before_o can_v belong_v to_o it_o for_o it_o can_v have_v both_o but_o by_o this_o command_n a_o whole_a wake_a day_n or_o a_o artificial_a day_n be_v to_o be_v sanctify_v together_o that_o the_o sabbath_n must_v be_v the_o first_o or_o last_o day_n of_o the_o seven_o as_o for_o the_o proposition_n clear_v the_o change_n and_o consistency_n of_o it_o with_o this_o command_n the_o first_o shall_v be_v this_o the_o sabbath_n may_v be_v change_v from_o the_o last_o or_o seven_o day_n to_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n without_o any_o derogation_n to_o this_o command_n or_o inconsistency_n with_o it_o for_o all_o that_o be_v moral_a in_o it_o to_o wit_n a_o day_n and_o one_o day_n of_o seven_o and_o a_o bound_a seven_o day_n leave_v six_o for_o work_n together_o remain_z untouched_a by_o the_o change_n beside_o the_o seven_o day_n not_o have_v its_o institution_n from_o this_o command_n express_o and_o direct_o but_o only_o accidental_o the_o particular_a day_n whether_o the_o jew_n seven_o day_n or_o the_o christian_n first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n be_v suppose_v by_o the_o four_o commandment_n as_o institute_v or_o to_o be_v institute_v elsewhere_o difference_n that_o their_o meeting_n on_o these_o day_n be_v occasional_a and_o it_o may_v be_v but_o partial_a to_o speak_v so_o but_o the_o solemn_a chief_a fix_a meeting_n of_o all_o be_v usual_o and_o ordinary_o on_o the_o first_o day_n 3._o this_o come_n together_o on_o that_o day_n for_o these_o end_n be_v speak_v of_o as_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o new_a nor_o occasional_a but_o as_o true_a meaning_n thereof_o which_o from_o the_o beginning_n make_v it_o not_o only_o consistent_a with_o the_o work_n of_o piety_n and_o mercy_n but_o exceed_o helpful_a to_o both_o a_o second_o place_n confirm_v the_o whole_a decalogue_n or_o rather_o assert_v its_o authority_n be_v in_o the_o epistle_n of_o james_n jam._n 2._o 10._o he_o that_o offend_v in_o one_o be_v guilty_a of_o all_o why_o because_o he_o be_v the_o same_o god_n and_o lawgiver_n and_o no_o servant_n nor_o angel_n who_o speak_v they_o all_o one_o as_o well_o as_o another_o of_o they_o and_o it_o be_v clear_a there_o ten_o which_o the_o lord_n speak_v and_o be_v abrogate_a and_o not_o bind_v it_o necessary_o follow_v that_o this_o four_o command_n be_v one_o of_o the_o ten_o must_v be_v of_o equal_a authority_n with_o the_o rest_n it_o may_v be_v note_v also_o that_o james_n here_o do_v not_o as_o neither_o do_v our_o lord_n nor_o any_o of_o his_o apostle_n when_o they_o cite_v the_o law_n give_v new_a authority_n to_o the_o law_n he_o cit_v but_o suppose_v they_o to_o have_v it_o already_o and_o make_v use_v of_o they_o as_o confirmation_n of_o the_o thing_n he_o press_v which_o can_v not_o be_v if_o their_o authority_n depend_v on_o or_o slow_v from_o the_o present_a citation_n of_o they_o three_o we_o reason_v further_o thus_o either_o there_o be_v some_o moral_a duty_n contain_v in_o this_o command_n and_o lay_v on_o by_o it_o which_o be_v not_o in_o any_o of_o the_o former_a or_o there_o be_v but_o some_o ceremonial_a thing_n in_o it_o reducible_a to_o one_o of_o they_o for_o the_o perfection_n of_o this_o law_n require_v that_o all_o thing_n needful_a to_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v sum_v in_o it_o and_o the_o scope_n thereof_o which_o be_v brief_o to_o compend_v all_o require_v there_o shall_v be_v nothing_o in_o it_o that_o be_v needless_a superfluous_a or_o that_o may_v have_v beeâ—_n leave_v out_o now_o if_o the_o
themselves_o but_o as_o take_v burden_n on_o they_o for_o all_o under_o they_o and_o within_o their_o family_n to_o endeavour_v the_o sanctify_a of_o the_o lord_n day_n with_o they_o and_o by_o they_o as_o well_o as_o by_o themselves_o whereby_o the_o extent_n of_o this_o command_n be_v clear_o and_o earnest_o hold_v forth_o in_o more_o express_a term_n then_o in_o any_o other_o of_o all_o the_o command_n though_o this_o be_v employ_v in_o they_o also_o 8._o the_o observation_n of_o it_o be_v press_v and_o encourage_v unto_o by_o a_o special_a blessing_n which_o he_o have_v annex_v to_o the_o time_n set_v a_o part_n by_o himself_o he_o bless_v it_o that_o be_v he_o make_v and_o still_o make_v it_o useful_a and_o refresh_a as_o a_o special_a blessing_n to_o his_o people_n who_o keep_v his_o 9_o it_o be_v special_o and_o singular_o usher_v in_o with_o a_o memento_n or_o remember_v which_o be_v not_o express_v in_o any_o other_o command_n and_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o where_o god_n say_v remember_v there_o be_v nothing_o to_o be_v take_v notice_n of_o or_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o it_o say_v not_o remember_v now_o as_o well_o as_o then_o and_o if_o so_o who_o can_v warrantable_o forget_v that_o which_o he_o bid_v remember_v which_o be_v not_o to_o keep_v the_o seven_o day_n but_o the_o sabbath_n holy_a unto_o the_o lord_n and_o may_v not_o all_o these_o character_n put_v together_o in_o one_o command_n so_o many_o not_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o all_o the_o other_o command_v if_o put_v together_o may_v not_o all_o these_o i_o say_v convince_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n purpose_v to_o have_v this_o command_n stand_v obligatory_a in_o its_o substance_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n which_o be_v so_o press_v that_o if_o there_o be_v little_a help_n from_o nature_n light_n to_o determine_v the_o day_n or_o to_o press_v its_o observation_n it_o may_v be_v strong_o bear_v in_o by_o the_o more_o clear_a and_o weighty_a reason_n and_o so_o we_o come_v to_o the_o four_o way_n propose_v for_o make_v out_o the_o morality_n of_o this_o command_n which_o be_v by_o adduce_v some_o argument_n draw_v from_o scripture_n the_o first_o whereof_o be_v if_o the_o law_n bind_v under_o the_o new_a testament_n not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o its_o matter_n as_o its_o natural_a nor_o only_o as_o it_o be_v repeat_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n but_o also_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o authority_n enact_v it_o then_o this_o law_n of_o the_o four_o command_n though_o not_o explicit_o determine_v by_o nature_n and_o though_o it_o be_v not_o mention_v particular_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n must_v be_v bind_v also_o for_o it_o have_v that_o same_o authority_n but_o the_o first_o be_v true_a and_o be_v acknowledge_v general_o by_o divine_n except_v a_o few_o and_o be_v clear_a by_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n their_o cite_n of_o it_o as_o suppose_v it_o to_o be_v bind_v therefore_o the_o last_o must_v be_v true_a also_o 2._o arg._n if_o this_o command_n be_v found_v on_o moral_a ground_n than_o itself_o must_v be_v moral_a but_o the_o ground_n on_o which_o it_o be_v found_v be_v moral_a ergo_fw-la etc._n etc._n 1._o it_o be_v moral_a that_o god_n shall_v have_v a_o solemn_a and_o chief_a set-time_n 2._o that_o he_o himself_o and_o none_o other_o shall_v determine_v that_o time_n see_v no_o other_o can_v do_v it_o and_o bless_v it_o 3._o these_o reason_n in_o the_o command_n itself_o divide_v time_n into_o six_o part_n of_o it_o to_o we_o and_o a_o seven_o part_n to_o god_n and_o god_n rest_v after_o six_o day_n work_v with_o his_o make_n only_o seven_o day_n in_o the_o week_n and_o employ_v six_o of_o they_o to_o work_v etc._n etc._n these_o reason_n i_o say_v be_v all_o moral_a and_o bind_v now_o as_o before_o 3._o arg._n if_o all_o moral_a duty_n be_v contain_v in_o the_o ten_o command_n than_o this_o command_n must_v needs_o be_v moral_a but_o the_o first_o be_v true_a ergo_fw-la etc._n etc._n this_o command_n contain_v a_o moral_a duty_n which_o be_v in_o none_o of_o the_o precede_a command_n to_o wit_n the_o stint_n and_o determine_v of_o the_o solemn_a and_o chief_a time_n to_o be_v set_v a_o part_n for_o god_n worship_n to_o be_v one_o day_n of_o seven_o it_o be_v true_a time_n be_v command_v to_o be_v allow_v to_o god_n worship_n in_o those_o other_o command_v wherein_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n themselves_o be_v command_v for_o worship_n can_v be_v perform_v more_o than_o any_o other_o duty_n without_o some_o time_n but_o that_o the_o chief_a time_n shall_v be_v so_o much_o and_o so_o often_o be_v only_o determine_v in_o this_o command_n from_o which_o it_o appear_v 1._o that_o a_o indefinite_a time_n of_o worship_n or_o for_o it_o be_v not_o the_o morality_n of_o this_o command_n because_o this_o follow_v necessary_o as_o be_v suppose_v needful_a for_o the_o performance_n of_o every_o positive_a duty_n contain_v in_o the_o other_o command_v its_o morality_n therefore_o must_v be_v the_o determine_n of_o that_o definit_a time_n 2._o we_o may_v hence_o see_v a_o reason_n why_o there_o be_v no_o new_a command_n for_o this_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n because_o this_o stand_v in_o the_o law_n neither_o be_v thou_o shall_v not_o swear_v kill_v &c_n &c_n mention_v as_o new_a command_n more_o than_o this_o so_o that_o have_v they_o not_o be_v mention_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n as_o some_o be_v not_o yet_o have_v they_o still_o oblige_v it_o be_v just_a so_o as_o to_o this_o and_o the_o reason_n why_o they_o be_v mention_v may_v be_v suppose_v to_o be_v because_o the_o main_a fault_n about_o they_o be_v defect_n and_o short_a come_n but_o in_o this_o it_o be_v excess_n which_o our_o lord_n also_o regulate_v by_o hold_v forth_o the_o right_a observance_n of_o it_o and_o clear_v what_o be_v wrong_v and_o so_o be_v suppose_v to_o confirm_v what_o he_o repeal_v not_o 4._o arg._n if_o it_o be_v not_o free_a for_o man_n to_o carve_v out_o god_n solemn_a chief_a time_n of_o worship_n at_o their_o pleasure_n then_o be_v this_o command_n moral_a for_o that_o liberty_n be_v restrain_v by_o this_o command_n and_o no_o other_o but_o it_o be_v not_o free_a for_o they_o to_o choose_v what_o time_n they_o please_v or_o to_o carve_v it_o out_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v only_o questionable_a which_o be_v therefore_o thus_o confirm_v if_o it_o â—e_v frâ—e_v to_o man_n to_o carve_v out_o what_o solemn_a and_o chief_a time_n be_v to_o be_v give_v to_o and_o set_v apart_o for_o god_n worship_n then_o either_o it_o be_v free_a to_o they_o to_o choose_v no_o time_n at_o all_o or_o it_o be_v free_a for_o they_o to_o choose_v a_o long_o or_o a_o short_a than_o this_o but_o neither_o of_o these_o can_v be_v say_v not_o the_o first_o as_o be_v clear_a not_o the_o second_o because_o it_o will_v not_o so_o quadrate_n with_o the_o end_n for_o if_o the_o time_n be_v short_a it_o incroach_v on_o god_n due_a if_o it_o be_v long_o it_o incroach_v on_o god_n concession_n of_o six_o day_n to_o work_v in_o if_o it_o be_v short_a it_o incroach_v on_o god_n due_a as_o be_v say_v and_o our_o soul_n good_a if_o long_a it_o incroach_v on_o our_o temporal_a call_n and_o can_v any_o restrain_v man_n when_o god_n give_v he_o liberty_n again_o if_o it_o be_v free_a to_o man_n so_o to_o cut_v and_o carve_v at_o pleasure_n on_o the_o solemn_a and_o chief_a time_n for_o god_n worship_n it_o be_v either_o free_a for_o all_o man_n together_o to_o agree_v on_o a_o day_n even_o one_o and_o the_o same_o or_o its_o free_a for_o each_o country_n or_o each_o man_n to_o choose_v what_o day_n they_o please_v but_o neither_o of_o these_o be_v either_o possible_a or_o practicable_a to_o edification_n therefore_o must_v the_o day_n he_o determine_v to_o they_o and_o if_o so_o then_o sure_a by_o this_o command_n and_o so_o it_o be_v still_o bind_v and_o can_v in_o that_o respect_n be_v alter_v without_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o thing_n to_o be_v prove_v 5._o arg._n that_o there_o be_v a_o morality_n in_o a_o seven_o day_n we_o may_v argue_v from_o four_o famous_a and_o
temple_n be_v build_v tie_v they_o to_o the_o ark_n and_o sometime_o to_o one_o place_n and_o sometime_o to_o another_o as_o it_o be_v remove_v and_o place_v till_o it_o be_v bring_v to_o jerusalem_n but_o after_o the_o temple_n be_v build_v and_o choose_v for_o the_o place_n it_o astricted_a man_n to_o that_o yea_o when_o the_o temple_n be_v destroy_v and_o christ_n come_v it_o a_o strict_v man_n to_o no_o place_n by_o another_o but_o it_o oblige_v man_n to_o worship_n god_n every_o where_o in_o spirit_n and_o truth_n it_o be_v true_a this_o be_v a_o ceremonial_a precept_n and_o will_v not_o hold_v in_o all_o thing_n especial_o as_o to_o its_o oblition_n yet_o while_o it_o stand_v by_o a_o positive_a authority_n or_o precept_n it_o show_v that_o god_n may_v command_v a_o particular_a as_o one_o day_n of_o seven_o and_o yet_o not_o instant_o so_o determine_v but_o that_o one_o and_o the_o same_o command_n may_v enforce_v to_o diverse_a day_n at_o diverse_a time_n upon_o supposition_n of_o god_n manifest_v his_o mind_n even_o as_o by_o one_o command_n man_n be_v astrict_v successive_o to_o diverse_a place_n 2._o see_v it_o instance_a in_o the_o second_o command_n wherein_o god_n a_o seven_o for_o rest_n be_v speak_v of_o a_o three_o instance_n be_v in_o tithe_n which_o be_v the_o lord_n require_v apart_o of_o their_o mean_n or_o substance_n as_o this_o be_v apart_o of_o it_o be_v determine_v to_o the_o jew_n to_o sanctify_v the_o seven_o day_n though_o it_o be_v in_o the_o reason_n add_v and_o to_o we_o afterward_o to_o sanctify_v the_o first_o day_n they_o will_v be_v both_o find_v to_o be_v a_o seven_o day_n and_o a_o day_n of_o rest_n and_o therefore_o to_o be_v remember_v and_o to_o be_v sanctify_v this_o will_v resolve_v into_o the_o same_o thing_n on_o the_o matter_n yet_o we_o conceive_v it_o safe_a to_o assert_v that_o in_o this_o command_n god_n have_v set_v apart_o a_o seven_o day_n to_o himself_o which_o be_v to_o be_v sanctify_v by_o we_o by_o our_o application_n of_o it_o to_o holy_a use_n but_o do_v not_o by_o it_o express_o direct_o and_o primary_o bind_v to_o the_o seven_o day_n but_o secondary_o and_o by_o consequence_n to_o wit_n as_o it_o be_v other_o way_n before_o declare_v by_o he_o and_o so_o it_o bind_v now_o that_o same_o way_n to_o the_o sanctify_a of_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n as_o be_v now_o reveal_v by_o god_n just_a as_o in_o the_o former_a instance_n or_o example_n we_o touch_v upon_o that_o a_o seven_o day_n whatever_o it_o be_v which_o be_v choose_v of_o god_n and_o not_o the_o seven_o day_n in_o order_n be_v to_o be_v sanctify_v by_o virtue_n of_o this_o command_n as_o enjoin_v that_o as_o the_o substance_n and_o matter_n of_o it_o may_v be_v make_v out_o by_o these_o argument_n arg._n 1._o prayer_n praise_n ministry_n etc._n etc._n now_o sacrament_n as_o they_o seal_v be_v not_o ceremonial_a for_o the_o tree_n of_o life_n be_v institute_v to_o be_v a_o seal_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n in_o the_o state_n of_o innocency_n before_o the_o fall_n while_o there_o be_v no_o typical_a institution_n of_o a_o saviour_n to_o come_v and_o so_o sacrament_n as_o they_o be_v seal_n may_v be_v continue_v as_o perpetual_a piece_n of_o worship_n without_o hazard_n of_o typify_a a_o saviour_n to_o come_v therefore_o he_o institute_v new_a one_o and_o that_o with_o relation_n to_o his_o
