necessary_o oblige_v to_o believe_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n do_v not_o rest_v satisfy_v with_o those_o collection_n of_o article_n which_o be_v to_o be_v meet_v with_o in_o the_o common_a system_n do_v not_o appear_v to_o be_v because_o all_o or_o most_o or_o perhaps_o any_o of_o the_o article_n in_o some_o of_o those_o system_n be_v without_o any_o article_n collect_v into_o those_o system_n be_v necessary_o to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n now_o according_a to_o that_o notion_n what_o certain_o can_v there_o be_v who_o be_v not_o know_v the_o whole_a new_a testament_n be_v the_o general_n rule_n of_o faith_n to_o all_o christian_n as_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n have_v of_o unbeliever_n into_o the_o church_n his_o second_o reason_n be_v because_o it_o do_v not_o answer_v the_o full_a sense_n and_o intent_n of_o revelation_n which_o be_v the_o only_a reason_n and_o for_o certain_o it_o can_v be_v a_o blemish_n to_o a_o treatise_n that_o it_o discourse_v its_o subject_a so_o clear_o and_o so_o full_o that_o very_o material_a answer_n may_v be_v bring_v from_o the_o treatise_n itself_o to_o whatsoever_o be_v produce_v by_o way_n of_o objection_n against_o it_o some_o author_n write_v after_o such_o a_o rate_n their_o own_o book_n may_v be_v pertinent_o make_v use_n of_o to_o confute_v their_o notion_n but_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n whoever_o he_o be_v seem_v to_o have_v this_o peculiar_a excellency_n and_o advantage_n that_o he_o treat_v the_o point_n he_o discourse_n of_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n he_o full_o answer_v his_o adversary_n before_o they_o can_v make_v their_o objection_n this_o that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n but_o first_o of_o all_o the_o full_a proof_n imaginable_a of_o every_o one_o of_o these_o point_n will_v not_o in_o the_o least_o confirm_v the_o all_o of_o these_o five_o point_n and_o the_o church_n authority_n by_o her_o continual_a confession_n to_o make_v any_o doctrine_n which_o be_v only_o to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o epistle_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n if_o it_o shall_v be_v say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o pretend_v that_o the_o church_n confession_n make_v they_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v but_o discover_v and_o prove_v that_o they_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n i_o answer_v 1._o the_o proof_n of_o the_o forementioned_a point_n be_v no_o proof_n at_o all_o of_o the_o church_n confession_n but_o must_v be_v suppose_v and_o be_v antecedent_n to_o the_o church_n confession_n 2._o that_o the_o church_n confession_n do_v not_o discover_v or_o prove_v that_o those_o doctrine_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n it_o discover_v or_o prove_v no_o more_o but_o that_o the_o church_n do_v think_v those_o doctrine_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v explicit_o to_o make_v man_n christian_n now_o when_o the_o question_n be_v whether_o the_o church_n have_v think_v right_o concern_v this_o matter_n that_o question_n must_v be_v determine_v if_o she_o have_v not_o authority_n to_o make_v at_o least_o reveal_v doctrine_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n by_o ascend_v high_o and_o see_v what_o jesus_n christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n have_v declare_v be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n which_o be_v the_o way_n the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n take_v to_o discover_v what_o doctrine_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o the_o aforesaid_a purpose_n without_o make_v any_o hubbub_n concern_v the_o church_n in_o the_o matter_n the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n have_v not_o write_v one_o word_n that_o i_o can_v find_v that_o have_v any_o tendency_n to_o the_o disadvantage_n of_o the_o christian_a church_n but_o very_o much_o that_o will_v contribute_v great_o to_o her_o honour_n and_o interest_n be_v people_n general_o of_o the_o mind_n to_o attend_v her_o great_a concernment_n hearty_o without_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v sway_v by_o their_o own_o petty_a interest_n and_o peevish_a humour_n which_o they_o sacrilegious_o dignify_v with_o her_o name_n she_o may_v enjoy_v a_o profound_a rest_n and_o become_v daily_o more_o and_o more_o true_o glorious_a will_v other_o people_n let_v she_o be_v quiet_a and_o not_o disturb_v she_o repose_v by_o a_o rude_a abuse_v her_o name_n to_o justify_v their_o espouse_v and_o talk_v for_o matter_n both_o scripture_n and_o reason_n do_v disclaim_v second_o the_o exact_a proof_n of_o the_o four_o first_o point_n will_v not_o afford_v any_o proof_n of_o what_o this_o author_n declare_v shall_v be_v his_o business_n to_o prove_v in_o this_o first_o part_n of_o his_o book_n viz._n that_o there_o be_v doctrine_n in_o the_o epistle_n distinct_a from_o those_o which_o be_v deliver_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o act_n which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n the_o truth_n of_o the_o four_o first_o point_n be_v agree_v on_o on_o both_o side_n especial_o some_o allowance_n be_v make_v for_o that_o latitude_n of_o expression_n in_o which_o the_o three_o be_v lay_v down_o so_o that_o it_o be_v only_o the_o five_o and_o last_o point_n on_o which_o the_o controversy_n do_v depend_v it_o will_v therefore_o be_v needless_a to_o make_v any_o observation_n on_o what_o this_o author_n offer_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o his_o four_o first_o point_n unless_o he_o happen_v to_o mistake_v any_o thing_n in_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n which_o he_o bring_v in_o under_o these_o head_n or_o misapply_v what_o he_o have_v to_o say_v on_o these_o point_n to_o that_o treatise_n or_o some_o passage_n in_o it_o this_o author_n bestow_v his_o seven_o page_n in_o set_v down_o a_o objection_n that_o have_v some_o relation_n to_o his_o two_o first_o point_n i_o think_v the_o objection_n be_v not_o accurate_o express_v but_o that_o i_o shall_v pass_v over_o and_o only_o take_v notice_n of_o his_o speak_n of_o doctrine_n propose_v to_o be_v believe_v upon_o the_o absolute_a promise_n of_o salvation_n this_o be_v a_o passage_n i_o confess_v i_o do_v not_o well_o understand_v i_o know_v there_o be_v at_o this_o time_n many_o among_o we_o who_o make_v a_o great_a noise_n in_o affirm_v that_o salvation_n be_v absolute_o promise_v to_o some_o person_n and_o the_o stir_v they_o have_v make_v about_o or_o with_o that_o notion_n i_o apprehend_v be_v a_o occasion_n of_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n apply_v himself_o to_o search_v with_o particular_a exactness_n into_o the_o holy_a scripture_n to_o find_v out_o in_o what_o manner_n salvation_n be_v there_o promise_v but_o i_o do_v not_o conceive_v that_o this_o author_n of_o the_o animadversion_n be_v one_o of_o that_o party_n now_o i_o think_v there_o be_v not_o a_o absolute_a promise_n of_o salvation_n in_o all_o the_o scripture_n and_o that_o if_o there_o be_v such_o a_o promise_n there_o can_v not_o be_v any_o thing_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v unto_o salvation_n for_o a_o answer_n to_o this_o viz._n objection_n speak_v of_o before_o it_o will_v say_v this_o author_n be_v material_a to_o examine_v first_o whether_o nothing_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n but_o what_o be_v declare_v to_o be_v so_o or_o whether_o any_o doctrine_n upon_o which_o salvation_n be_v propose_v be_v single_o of_o itself_o sufficient_a for_o it_o p._n 8._o he_o immediate_o add_v this_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o query_n of_o no_o small_a importance_n here_o i_o will_v 1._o propound_v some_o reason_n why_o it_o may_v be_v just_o affirm_v that_o a_o due_a believe_a jesus_n to_o be_v the_o christ_n or_o messiah_n do_v constitute_v and_o make_v man_n christian_n 2._o i_o will_v consider_v what_o this_o author_n propound_v to_o be_v examine_v 3._o i_o will_v take_v notice_n of_o what_o this_o author_n have_v here_o write_v upon_o this_o point_n first_o i_o will_v lay_v down_o some_o reason_n why_o it_o may_v be_v just_o affirm_v that_o a_o due_a believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n or_o christ_n do_v constitute_v and_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian._n as_o 1._o because_o jesus_n christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n do_v admit_v person_n to_o be_v his_o disciple_n and_o own_v they_o for_o christian_n upon_o their_o believe_v this_o doctrine_n without_o require_v the_o belief_n of_o any_o other_o doctrine_n to_o this_o purpose_n provide_v they_o do_v believe_v in_o the_o true_a and_o living_n god_n as_o every_o where_o appear_v in_o the_o account_n give_v of_o their_o admit_v disciple_n 2._o because_o they_o have_v promise_v salvatition_n to_o the_o due_a belief_n of_o this_o doctrine_n without_o require_v the_o explicit_a belief_n of_o any_o other_o gospel-doctrine_n together_o with_o this_o as_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n 3._o because_o salvation_n be_v not_o promise_v to_o the_o belief_n of_o any_o one_o or_o number_n of_o doctrine_n separately_z from_o this_o doctrine_n 4._o because_o no_o other_o doctrine_n christ_n or_o his_o apostle_n have_v teach_v can_v be_v believe_v aright_o but_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o person_n believe_v this_o doctrine_n let_v a_o man_n believe_v all_o the_o doctrine_n deliver_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n upon_o consideration_n pure_o distinct_a from_o this_o that_o they_o be_v doctrine_n teach_v by_o jesus_n christ_n who_o he_o have_v receive_v for_o his_o lord_n he_o do_v not_o believe_v they_o as_o a_o christian_a ought_v to_o believe_v they_o nor_o will_v his_o belief_n of_o they_o on_o those_o account_n at_o all_o avail_v he_o as_o to_o salvation_n by_o virtue_n of_o any_o promise_n in_o the_o gospel_n he_o that_o believe_v any_o of_o these_o doctrine_n with_o the_o faith_n of_o a_o christian_a or_o
a_o immediate_a tendency_n to_o the_o salvation_n of_o mankind_n but_o that_o which_o shall_v be_v prove_v be_v this_o that_o christ_n or_o his_o apostle_n have_v reveal_v that_o the_o explicit_a belief_n of_o all_o those_o doctrine_n which_o declare_v what_o be_v necessary_a on_o christ_n part_n in_o order_n to_o his_o obtain_n salvation_n for_o mankind_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n or_o to_o a_o person_n be_v be_v entitle_v to_o and_o partake_v of_o the_o salvation_n which_o be_v so_o obtain_v but_o it_o be_v say_v these_o respect_n the_o end_n for_o which_o he_o have_v reveal_v any_o thing_n to_o we_o and_o that_o be_v only_o the_o eternal_a benefit_n and_o happiness_n of_o mankind_n answ._n if_o this_o be_v only_o the_o end_n for_o which_o god_n have_v reveal_v any_o thing_n to_o we_o and_o therefore_o these_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n this_o will_v bring_v in_o all_o the_o other_o truth_n to_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n and_o so_o the_o general_a direction_n here_o lay_v down_o to_o distinguish_v fundamental_a truth_n will_v be_v of_o no_o use_n for_o those_o truth_n be_v thing_n god_n have_v reveal_v to_o we_o and_o the_o eternal_a benefit_n and_o happiness_n of_o mankind_n be_v the_o only_a end_n for_o which_o he_o have_v reveal_v any_o thing_n unto_o we_o they_o must_v equal_o respect_v the_o same_o end_n and_o consequent_o be_v equal_o necessary_a to_o be_v explicit_o believe_v in_o order_n to_o that_o end_n but_o i_o fancy_v the_o author_n mean_v be_v thus_o that_o the_o only_a end_n for_o which_o god_n reveal_v those_o truth_n of_o a_o high_a nature_n be_v the_o eternal_a benefit_n and_o happiness_n of_o mankind_n that_o be_v to_o bring_v it_o home_o to_o the_o present_a purpose_n the_o only_a end_n why_o god_n reveal_v those_o truth_n be_v to_o make_v the_o explicit_a belief_n of_o they_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n and_o if_o this_o be_v prove_v the_o controversy_n will_v be_v at_o a_o end_n but_o i_o think_v the_o great_a reason_n and_o end_v why_o god_n have_v reveal_v those_o doctrine_n which_o declare_v the_o way_n and_o method_n how_o our_o saviour_n do_v obtain_v salvation_n for_o mankind_n be_v that_o christian_n may_v know_v and_o believe_v the_o way_n how_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n do_v procure_v and_o purchase_v salvation_n for_o sinner_n and_o that_o they_o may_v make_v such_o use_n and_o improvement_n of_o these_o truth_n as_o he_o particular_o direct_v or_o their_o own_o nature_n be_v proper_a to_o suggest_v some_o doctrine_n may_v be_v of_o great_a consequence_n to_o be_v explicit_o know_v and_o believe_v by_o those_o who_o be_v christian_n than_o many_o and_o 172_o etc._n etc._n that_o the_o salvation_n of_o mankind_n be_v obtain_v by_o christ_n observe_v such_o and_o such_o method_n we_o know_v only_o by_o divine_a revelation_n but_o notwithstanding_o our_o salvation_n be_v obtain_v in_o such_o way_n and_o we_o be_v certain_a of_o the_o same_o from_o the_o testimony_n of_o christ_n we_o be_v not_o to_o affirm_v that_o the_o explicit_a belief_n of_o the_o doctrine_n which_o declare_v these_o truth_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v man_n christian_n or_o to_o salvation_n without_o christ_n warrant_n the_o way_n than_o what_o christ_n absolute_o require_v to_o be_v believe_v in_o order_n to_o his_o dispense_n it_o unto_o men._n our_o believe_v explicit_o the_o several_a step_v jesus_n be_v to_o take_v for_o the_o obtain_n of_o salvation_n for_o mankind_n have_v not_o the_o same_o relation_n to_o our_o receive_v that_o salvation_n from_o he_o on_o the_o account_n of_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o make_v they_o christian_n how_o near_o a_o connection_n soever_o their_o believe_v any_o thing_n else_o which_o they_o know_v and_o believe_v concern_v he_o who_o shall_v be_v the_o messiah_n may_v
