reason_n from_o which_o you_o think_v they_o lawful_a before_o i_o conclude_v my_o answer_n to_o this_o first_o part_n of_o your_o charge_n against_o we_o a_o little_a to_o try_v the_o force_n of_o be_v minister_n either_o they_o suspect_v the_o sinfulness_n of_o admit_v a_o re-ordination_a or_o of_o abjure_v or_o of_o assent_v and_o consent_v to_o the_o use_n of_o all_o and_o every_o part_n of_o the_o liturgy_n and_o therein_o of_o every_o ceremony_n now_o this_o i_o say_v though_o the_o friend_n of_o these_o imposition_n shall_v with_o the_o high_a confidence_n affirm_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o they_o all_o yea_o and_o endeavour_v with_o a_o thousand_o argument_n to_o prove_v they_o such_o yet_o if_o those_o minister_n herein_o concern_v upon_o a_o serious_a weigh_v of_o these_o argument_n find_v they_o too_o light_a and_o after_o much_o prayer_n to_o god_n for_o a_o resolution_n yet_o find_v themselves_o to_o doubt_n in_o this_o case_n they_o ought_v not_o upon_o the_o apostle_n rule_v now_o name_v to_o yield_v to_o any_o such_o imposition_n against_o their_o doubt_a conscience_n if_o it_o be_v here_o reply_v why_o do_v they_o not_o then_o degrade_v themselves_o or_o quiet_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v degrade_v of_o their_o ministry_n and_o in_o the_o condition_n of_o private_a christian_n communicate_v with_o this_o church_n for_o so_o they_o may_v do_v and_o free_v themselves_o from_o these_o imposition_n it_o will_v be_v answer_v that_o this_o be_v a_o imposition_n they_o suspect_v as_o sinful_a as_o the_o rest_n for_o so_o long_o as_o they_o be_v persuade_v that_o their_o mission_n be_v original_o from_o christ_n they_o can_v believe_v that_o it_o be_v either_o in_o their_o own_o power_n or_o in_o the_o power_n of_o any_o other_o inferior_a to_o christ_n to_o give_v they_o a_o discharge_n from_o execute_v this_o their_o office_n except_o it_o be_v for_o heresy_n or_o obstinate_a scandal_n against_o some_o know_a law_n of_o christ_n and_o then_o indeed_o christ_n have_v leave_v a_o order_n not_o only_o for_o exclude_v they_o from_o their_o office_n but_o also_o from_o the_o church_n but_o neither_o of_o these_o latter_a be_v in_o the_o least_o pretend_a and_o therefore_o it_o be_v they_o can_v without_o suspicion_n of_o sin_n either_o degrade_v themselves_o or_o quiet_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v degrade_v and_o still_o i_o add_v if_o any_o reason_n be_v urge_v for_o the_o lawfulness_n of_o this_o degradation_n but_o such_o that_o be_v short_a of_o their_o conviction_n so_o that_o still_o they_o doubt_v it_o will_v continue_v yet_o their_o duty_n to_o serve_v the_o church_n as_o minister_n and_o not_o to_o listen_v themselves_o among_o private_a christian_n as_o be_v advise_v if_o it_o be_v ask_v but_o may_v not_o supreme_a magistrate_n if_o they_o can_v divest_v minister_n of_o their_o office_n may_v not_o they_o within_o their_o dominion_n suspend_v some_o of_o they_o from_o the_o exercise_n thereof_o when_o they_o conceive_v it_o be_v for_o the_o peace_n of_o the_o rest_n it_o will_v be_v answer_v that_o that_o lord_n of_o lord_n who_o give_v the_o office_n and_o the_o commission_n and_o have_v by_o divers_a providence_n design_v the_o man_n thereto_o have_v certain_o with_o the_o office_n design_v they_o to_o the_o exercise_n thereof_o for_o else_o very_o the_o office_n be_v in_o vain_a and_o have_v
therein_o place_v not_o only_o the_o office_n but_o the_o exercise_n thereof_o above_o the_o restraint_n of_o any_o power_n whatever_o that_o hold_v of_o and_o under_o he_o on_o earth_n so_o long_o as_o the_o exercise_n thereof_o continue_v to_o be_v regulate_v by_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n but_o if_o any_o man_n on_o earth_n shall_v appoint_v new_a law_n different_a from_o those_o of_o christ_n and_o impose_v they_o on_o minister_n as_o condition_n to_o be_v obey_v without_o which_o they_o will_v restrain_v they_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n as_o be_v disturber_n of_o the_o peace_n in_o such_o a_o case_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o such_o minister_n may_v continue_v to_o preach_v according_a to_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n but_o be_v restrain_v only_o by_o the_o law_n of_o man_n while_o then_o their_o conscience_n lie_v under_o a_o superior_a obligation_n to_o preach_v than_o that_o by_o which_o they_o be_v restrain_v from_o preach_v it_o be_v casie_a to_o conceive_v what_o they_o will_v or_o aught_o to_o do_v i._n e._n whether_o they_o will_v or_o aught_o to_o obey_v god_n or_o man_n if_o it_o be_v say_v such_o minister_n be_v mistake_v about_o the_o nature_n of_o such_o impose_v law_n as_o if_o they_o be_v different_a from_o or_o contrary_a to_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n when_o they_o be_v no_o other_o but_o what_o christ_n have_v entrust_v they_o with_o a_o power_n of_o appoint_v for_o the_o peace_n of_o his_o church_n it_o will_v be_v still_o answer_v that_o this_o people_n be_v persuade_v of_o the_o contrary_a and_o that_o christ_n have_v not_o entrust_v any_o man_n with_o such_o a_o power_n but_o do_v believe_v that_o they_o be_v thing_n rather_o destructive_a of_o the_o true_a peace_n of_o the_o church_n and_o this_o i_o say_v while_o they_o be_v so_o persuade_v though_o they_o shall_v be_v mistake_v they_o ought_v not_o to_o go_v against_o their_o conscience_n for_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v he_o that_o doubt_v and_o eat_v be_v damn_v so_o that_o from_o the_o whole_a it_o be_v evident_a the_o reason_n why_o these_o minister_n can_v conform_v and_o why_o they_o yet_o continue_v to_o preach_v be_v because_o they_o can_v do_v the_o one_o nor_o forbear_v the_o other_o without_o sin_n which_o be_v a_o just_a ground_n of_o their_o separation_n and_o of_o persevere_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n and_o therefore_o separation_n in_o this_o case_n as_o to_o they_o be_v no_o schism_n some_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v but_o what_o be_v all_o this_o to_o the_o common_a people_n they_o be_v schismatic_n without_o doubt_n for_o they_o have_v no_o such_o imposition_n upon_o they_o it_o may_v be_v answer_v that_o if_o the_o minister_n now_o name_v be_v yet_o true_a minister_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o that_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n have_v not_o be_v according_a to_o any_o law_n of_o christ_n restrain_v it_o will_v follow_v it_o can_v be_v no_o sin_n in_o the_o disciple_n of_o christ_n to_o own_v they_o who_o their_o lord_n ow_v or_o to_o hear_v they_o who_o their_o lord_n have_v commission_v to_o that_o end_n and_o by_o no_o law_n of_o his_o be_v restrain_v from_o act_v according_a to_o that_o commission_n again_o in_o as_o much_o as_o christ_n be_v suppose_v to_o continue_v his_o commission_n to_o these_o minister_n to_o preach_v it_o necessary_o follow_v that_o christ_n have_v a_o people_n to_o who_o he_o send_v they_o for_o it_o be_v absurd_a to_o conceive_v that_o christ_n shall_v send_v his_o minister_n to_o preach_v to_o no_o body_n if_o then_o they_o may_v preach_v it_o can_v be_v unlawful_a for_o the_o people_n to_o hear_v they_o no_o nor_o to_o partake_v of_o any_o ordinance_n from_o they_o which_o as_o minister_v they_o may_v administer_v yet_o again_o multitude_n of_o the_o people_n do_v own_v they_o as_o christ_n minister_n and_o do_v join_v with_o they_o in_o all_o ordinance_n as_o such_o and_o this_o for_o several_a year_n together_o and_o certain_o during_o those_o time_n they_o can_v not_o be_v esteem_v schismatic_n for_o so_o do_v since_o there_o be_v no_o other_o minister_n ordinary_o to_o be_v find_v if_o then_o they_o be_v no_o schismatic_n how_o come_v they_o to_o be_v so_o since_o if_o it_o be_v say_v the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n make_v they_o such_o it_o may_v be_v answer_v that_o since_o schism_n of_o which_o we_o speak_v be_v a_o sin_n peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o a_o church_n it_o be_v a_o wonder_n how_o a_o law_n of_o a_o land_n that_o be_v perfect_o extraneous_a to_o a_o church_n can_v make_v that_o at_o one_o time_n a_o schism_n which_o at_o another_o time_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v such_o nor_o do_v i_o think_v that_o those_o that_o now_o think_v themselves_o the_o church_n and_o that_o all_o that_o separate_v from_o they_o be_v schismatic_n in_o case_n they_o have_v a_o law_n of_o the_o land_n to_o establish_v presbytery_n or_o independency_n or_o anabaptistry_n will_v conceive_v of_o themselves_o as_o schismatic_n if_o they_o continue_v in_o that_o way_n they_o be_v in_o and_o refuse_v to_o hold_v communion_n with_o that_o the_o law_n establish_v and_o in_o truth_n i_o can_v possible_o conceive_v how_o that_o may_v be_v say_v just_o to_o day_n that_o it_o be_v no_o schism_n and_o yet_o to_o morrow_n it_o may_v be_v just_o call_v so_o mere_o because_o of_o a_o intervening_a humane_a law_n last_o as_o for_o the_o people_n it_o may_v be_v further_o answer_v that_o though_o they_o be_v not_o under_o the_o same_o imposition_n as_o their_o minister_n be_v yet_o they_o be_v not_o altogether_o free_a from_o imposition_n which_o they_o extreme_o suspect_v as_o sinful_a as_o that_o they_o can_v enjoy_v baptism_n for_o their_o child_n without_o the_o cross_n nor_o receive_v the_o lord_n supper_n without_o kneel_v to_o name_n no_o more_o if_o you_o say_v these_o be_v not_o sinful_a it_o be_v answer_v suppose_v they_o be_v not_o yet_o in_o case_n they_o suspect_v they_o vehement_o as_o such_o and_o all_o your_o argument_n can_v resolve_v their_o doubt_n it_o be_v evident_a they_o will_v go_v against_o and_o wound_v their_o conscience_n in_o case_n they_o shall_v submit_v to_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o if_o therefore_o these_o people_n shall_v for_o these_o reason_n join_v with_o those_o minister_n in_o all_o ordinance_n i_o see_v no_o ground_n to_o charge_v this_o people_n with_o schism_n no_o more_o than_o their_o minister_n thus_o have_v with_o as_o much_o brevity_n as_o i_o can_v state_v the_o case_n and_o cause_n of_o this_o people_n we_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o take_v a_o account_n of_o mr._n j._n s._n his_o sermon_n before_o the_o mayor_n which_o contain_v a_o impeachment_n of_o schism_n and_o a_o pretend_a proof_n thereof_o against_o this_o people_n they_o be_v now_o upon_o their_o trial_n and_o say_v not_o guilty_a and_o offer_v themselves_o to_o be_v try_v by_o the_o law_n of_o jesus_n christ_n which_o be_v the_o only_a law_n of_o his_o church_n the_o sermon_n of_o mr._n j._n s._n examine_v the_o design_n of_o that_o sermon_n one_o will_v be_v apt_a to_o think_v be_v to_o promote_v peace_n among_o the_o to_o do_v to_o judge_v or_o censure_v their_o brethren_n because_o they_o be_v god_n servant_n and_o to_o he_o only_o they_o stand_v or_o fall_v and_o rather_o for_o peace_n sake_n to_o forbear_v do_v that_o which_o they_o may_v lawful_o do_v than_o by_o any_o undue_a use_n of_o their_o liberty_n to_o cast_v a_o stumble_a block_n before_o the_o weak_a uninstruct_v dissenter_n this_o he_o confess_v pag._n 1.2_o be_v the_o way_n the_o apostle_n take_v and_o certain_o if_o he_o have_v follow_v so_o great_a a_o example_n he_o have_v like_o a_o man_n of_o wisdom_n as_o well_o as_o of_o peace_n prosecute_v a_o excellent_a end_n by_o most_o excellent_a mean_n but_o instead_o thereof_o he_o take_v a_o quite_o contrary_a method_n for_o instead_o of_o persuade_v christian_n to_o lay_v aside_o their_o controversy_n he_o himself_o raise_v they_o instead_o of_o dissuade_v they_o
withdraw_v communion_n from_o they_o but_o if_o it_o shall_v so_o fall_v out_o that_o the_o governor_n of_o a_o church_n and_o a_o great_a body_n of_o the_o people_n be_v so_o erroneous_a and_o this_o sufficient_o know_v and_o though_o reprove_v yet_o they_o abidè_fw-la obstinate_a maintainer_n thereof_o i_o say_v in_o this_o case_n it_o be_v sufficient_a ground_n for_o sound_a member_n to_o withdraw_v and_o save_v themselves_o from_o so_o dangerous_a a_o society_n and_o why_o because_o i_o may_v not_o lawful_o join_v with_o such_o a_o church_n where_o possible_o i_o may_v every_o time_n i_o join_v the_o lord_n christ_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n blaspheme_n who_o deity_n be_v deny_v by_o these_o sect_n nor_o may_v i_o join_v lest_o i_o endanger_v my_o faith_n for_o evil_a word_n do_v not_o only_o corrupt_v good_a manner_n but_o have_v a_o direct_a tendency_n to_o corrupt_v a_o sound_a faith_n and_o certain_o the_o safety_n of_o a_o soul_n be_v of_o great_a worth_n than_o the_o preservation_n of_o a_o corrupt_a peace_n or_o unity_n of_o a_o corrupt_a church_n and_o what_o i_o have_v say_v upon_o a_o supposition_n of_o such_o gross_a error_n in_o the_o ruler_n and_o many_o of_o the_o people_n of_o a_o church_n the_o same_o may_v be_v say_v of_o either_o idolater_n or_o gross_o profane_a practice_n for_o if_o minister_n or_o many_o of_o the_o member_n shall_v degenerate_v to_o a_o popish_a idolatry_n or_o shall_v prove_v common_a drunkard_n or_o whore-monger_n or_o opposer_n etc._n etc._n and_o be_v admonish_v thereof_o shall_v deride_v the_o admonition_n as_o precise_a and_o fanatical_a or_o if_o the_o member_n only_o be_v common_o so_o and_o the_o ruler_n witting_o connive_v thereat_o and_o seek_v not_o their_o cure_n by_o reproof_n and_o censure_n as_o christ_n have_v command_v in_o such_o case_n i_o say_v again_o it_o be_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n for_o the_o sound_a member_n to_o withdraw_v especial_o if_o a_o more_o pure_a church_n may_v be_v have_v yea_o tho_o neither_o these_o error_n or_o practice_n be_v impose_v and_o that_o first_o lest_o under_o the_o pretence_n of_o peace_n they_o shall_v be_v guilty_a of_o the_o great_a uncharitableness_n and_o that_o be_v the_o harden_v and_o encourage_v they_o in_o their_o abominable_a impiety_n again_o because_o the_o sound_a aught_o by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o nature_n to_o endanger_n of_o the_o sound_n it_o be_v apparent_a that_o the_o foundation_n of_o discipline_n be_v root_v up_o and_o in_o effect_n there_o be_v no_o discipline_n at_o all_o and_o that_o therefore_o every_o good_a christian_a may_v seek_v his_o safety_n as_o he_o can_v since_o he_o can_v obtain_v it_o in_o a_o church_n by_o the_o mean_n of_o the_o gospel_n discipline_n which_o through_o the_o corruption_n of_o the_o ruler_n and_o the_o sway_a part_n of_o the_o corrupt_a member_n be_v make_v void_a but_o no_o more_o of_o this_o till_o by_o and_o by_o when_o i_o shall_v have_v a_o fresh_a occasion_n to_o speak_v further_o to_o this_o point_n at_o present_a let_v we_o again_o return_v to_o inquire_v into_o a_o full_a sense_n of_o his_o proposition_n if_o by_o any_o mean_n we_o can_v find_v it_o out_o you_o say_v in_o general_a term_n without_o any_o limitation_n that_o error_n in_o doctrine_n and_o corruption_n in_o practice_n when_o find_v in_o a_o church_n but_o not_o impose_v be_v no_o just_a ground_n of_o separation_n i_o answer_v methinks_v by_o this_o general_a way_n of_o express_v yourself_o that_o you_o be_v not_o afraid_a of_o your_o reader_n understand_v this_o proposition_n without_o any_o limitation_n i_o pray_v tell_v i_o what_o if_o socinian_n or_o popish_a error_n and_o corrupt_a practice_n be_v get_v into_o the_o ruler_n of_o a_o church_n and_o a_o great_a body_n of_o the_o people_n and_o that_o they_o shall_v only_o tolerate_v they_o but_o not_o impose_v they_o on_o any_o what_o hinder_v if_o what_o you_o here_o say_v be_v true_a but_o that_o needs_o be_v false_a for_o if_o the_o very_o be_v of_o some_o sort_n of_o error_n and_o corruption_n in_o a_o church_n though_o not_o impose_v be_v so_o dangerous_a as_o to_o warrant_v a_o separation_n how_o can_v it_o then_o be_v universal_o true_a as_o you_o seem_v here_o to_o assert_v that_o error_n in_o doctrine_n and_o corruption_n in_o practice_n so_o long_o as_o they_o be_v only_o suffer_v but_o not_o impose_v can_v be_v a_o sufficient_a cause_n of_o separation_n but_o if_o you_o be_v there_o to_o be_v understand_v in_o the_o latter_a sense_n that_o be_v to_o say_v that_o the_o error_n and_o corruption_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n only_o as_o impose_v be_v so_o dangerous_a to_o man_n salvation_n as_o to_o warrant_v a_o separation_n then_o that_o which_o i_o even_o now_o suggest_v be_v true_a that_o christian_n may_v lawful_o here_o be_v baptise_a go_v to_o mass_n with_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n provide_v they_o be_v not_o force_v to_o make_v a_o profession_n of_o believe_v their_o error_n or_o have_v leave_v to_o receive_v those_o sacrament_n with_o all_o the_o superstition_n thereto_o belong_v in_o their_o own_o sense_n though_o it_o be_v well_o know_v that_o they_o administer_v they_o in_o a_o other_o i_o will_v not_o at_o present_a as_o aforesaid_a charge_v this_o opinion_n upon_o the_o author_n though_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o
