that_o be_v look_v towards_o a_o way_n of_o god_n but_o quick_o fright_v away_o what_o know_v thou_o o_o woman_n but_o thou_o may_v by_o thy_o heavenly_a conversation_n strict_a circumspect_a walk_a gain_n thy_o husband_n and_o thou_o husband_n thy_o wife_n and_o parent_n your_o child_n and_o child_n your_o parent_n and_o master_n your_o servant_n and_o servant_n your_o master_n and_o one_o neighbour_n may_v gain_v another_o and_o will_v not_o this_o add_v to_o the_o weight_n of_o your_o crown_n o_o therefore_o 2._o i_o beseech_v you_o will_v you_o resolve_v upon_o it_o now_o in_o the_o next_o place_n a_o word_n of_o direction_n what_o course_n to_o take_v alas_o we_o be_v like_o child_n must_v be_v teach_v to_o go_v we_o know_v not_o what_o foot_n to_o set_v forward_o in_o this_o plant_v your_o course_n will_v hardly_o hold_v if_o you_o set_v forward_o with_o a_o purpose_n to_o walk_v more_o exact_o except_o you_o be_v sensible_a how_o great_a the_o evil_a of_o turn_v aside_o or_o loose_a walk_n have_v be_v well_o then_o begin_v at_o the_o right_a end_n and_o see_v how_o you_o have_v it_o may_v be_v for_o a_o long_a time_n 95._o not_o only_o wander_v from_o the_o way_n but_o love_v to_o wander_v you_o have_v not_o only_o err_v but_o you_o have_v err_v in_o heart_n you_o have_v have_v the_o law_n of_o error_n in_o your_o heart_n as_o the_o saint_n have_v the_o law_n of_o christ_n in_o they_o and_o this_o indeed_o be_v the_o height_n of_o rebellion_n and_o froward_a walk_n it_o be_v frowardness_n indeed_o this_o provoke_v the_o lord_n to_o shut_v they_o out_o of_o canaan_n yea_o he_o swear_v they_o shall_v never_o enter_v and_o if_o it_o have_v not_o be_v so_o with_o thou_o for_o this_o very_a cause_n o_o how_o shall_v this_o abound_a grace_n which_o have_v make_v the_o difference_n melt_v thy_o heart_n to_o piece_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o that_o will_v be_v a_o good_a preparative_n to_o a_o circumspect_a walk_n for_o the_o future_a the_o wormwood_n and_o the_o gall_n remember_v how_o evil_a a_o thing_n and_o bitter_a it_o be_v that_o you_o have_v so_o depart_v from_o the_o lord_n and_o the_o straight_a path_n will_v be_v a_o notable_a help_n to_o keep_v you_o close_o to_o he_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v second_o set_v yourselves_o always_o as_o in_o his_o presence_n so_o the_o 8._o psalmist_n do_v walk_v as_o in_o his_o sight_n if_o and_o that_o he_o that_o have_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o lamp_n and_o that_o even_o now_o wear_v out_o yet_o shall_v be_v trim_v of_o it_o up_o for_o heaven_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n and_o it_o be_v as_o observable_a that_o the_o child_n of_o god_n have_v his_o lamp_n to_o trim_v now_o at_o such_o a_o time_n as_o this_o be_v when_o the_o cry_n be_v come_v he_o be_v summon_v to_o meet_v the_o lord_n jesus_n who_o be_v near_o at_o hand_n according_o i_o shall_v take_v up_o a_o double_a observation_n from_o the_o word_n that_o a_o hypocrite_n a_o formal_a professor_n may_v go_v very_o far_o towards_o 1._o heaven_n and_o salvation_n and_o i_o think_v this_o drop_v like_o honey_n from_o the_o comb_n without_o crush_a or_o wrong_v to_o the_o text._n that_o a_o child_n of_o god_n may_v have_v his_o lamp_n to_o trim_v when_o he_o shall_v 2._o use_v it_o the_o first_o of_o these_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v go_v very_o far_o his_o profession_n may_v carry_v he_o a_o great_a way_n and_o yet_o fall_v short_a at_o last_o you_o see_v here_o in_o the_o text_n god_n do_v not_o pluck_v away_o the_o vizard_n at_o first_o but_o let_v they_o proceed_v he_o can_v have_v discover_v they_o when_o he_o please_v they_o take_v up_o their_o lamp_n and_o they_o go_v forth_o to_o meet_v the_o bridegroom_n more_o than_o many_o will_v be_v persuade_v to_o that_o will_v hardly_o stir_v a_o foot_n for_o christ_n they_o continue_v so_o do_v until_o the_o bridegroom_n tarry_v so_o long_o beyond_o their_o expectation_n then_o indeed_o they_o fall_v asleep_a than_o they_o rouse_v again_o and_o trim_v their_o lamp_n all_o these_o put_v together_o which_o be_v in_o the_o text_n will_v make_v it_o appear_v that_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v go_v far_o and_o fall_v short_a a_o doctrine_n never_o more_o need_n for_o to_o be_v press_v then_o now_o and_o therefore_o though_o you_o have_v hear_v not_o very_o long_o since_o much_o concern_v it_o and_o much_o more_o than_o i_o be_o able_a to_o speak_v and_o better_a for_o the_o matter_n yet_o let_v i_o also_o put_v you_o in_o remembrance_n of_o these_o thing_n brethren_n and_o the_o lord_n open_v all_o our_o eye_n in_o a_o thing_n so_o near_o concern_v we_o all_o i_o shall_v therefore_o propose_v what_o i_o have_v to_o say_v by_o way_n of_o proof_n of_o the_o doctrine_n in_o several_a head_n or_o degree_n whereto_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v reach_v the_o lord_n give_v we_o all_o understanding_n in_o they_o first_o then_o a_o hypocrite_n he_o may_v have_v much_o knowledge_n much_o light_n a_o head_n full_a of_o notion_n and_o this_o be_v one_o thing_n necessary_o import_v in_o the_o lamp_n which_o the_o foolish_a virgin_n have_v some_o have_v think_v their_o lamp_n be_v dead_a they_o have_v no_o flame_n no_o light_n nor_o heat_n but_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v be_v a_o man_n of_o much_o knowledge_n do_v you_o not_o see_v it_o in_o the_o pharisee_n be_v they_o not_o man_n of_o much_o knowledge_n and_o understanding_n able_a to_o teach_v other_o they_o have_v moses_n chair_n and_o so_o the_o scripture_n the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o law_n man_n of_o 2._o great_a knowledge_n and_o yet_o our_o saviour_n brand_v they_o for_o hypocrite_n that_o be_v a_o aery_a religion_n that_o lie_v in_o the_o head_n so_o the_o jew_n the_o apostle_n speak_v to_o they_o by_o way_n of_o concession_n yield_v to_o they_o what_o they_o have_v but_o show_v they_o where_o they_o fall_v short_a thou_o be_v a_o jew_n and_o rest_v in_o the_o law_n and_o make_v thy_o boast_n of_o god_n as_o 21._o we_o do_v now_o make_v our_o boast_n of_o christ_n that_o we_o be_v christian_n and_o can_v bear_v it_o to_o be_v account_v otherwise_o and_o know_v his_o will_n and_o approve_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v more_o excellent_a be_v instruct_v out_o of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v the_o principle_n of_o their_o knowledge_n not_o a_o light_n within_o they_o by_o nature_n but_o to_o the_o law_n and_o to_o the_o testimony_n they_o have_v their_o light_n from_o thence_o and_o so_o well_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n that_o they_o be_v confident_a that_o they_o be_v guide_n to_o the_o blind_a and_o therefore_o have_v no_o need_n to_o be_v blind_a themselves_o a_o light_n to_o they_o which_o be_v in_o darkness_n a_o instructor_n of_o the_o foolish_a a_o teacher_n of_o babe_n and_o not_o only_o he_o be_v confident_a of_o it_o but_o the_o apostle_n yield_v it_o that_o he_o have_v the_o form_n of_o knowledge_n and_o of_o the_o truth_n in_o the_o law_n and_o then_o he_o reason_v ex_fw-la concessis_fw-la thou_o which_o teach_v another_o psalmist_n his_o leaf_n shall_v never_o 3._o wither_v the_o leaf_n be_v the_o profession_n he_o shall_v not_o wither_v but_o be_v green_a a_o hypocrite_n indeed_o like_o a_o bulrush_n will_v wither_v as_o we_o shall_v see_v by_o and_o by_o when_o the_o mire_n and_o the_o water_n fail_v but_o a_o child_n of_o god_n wither_v not_o there_o be_v two_o condition_n which_o usual_o wither_v man_n profession_n but_o the_o child_n of_o god_n stand_v it_o out_o in_o both_o 1._o in_o a_o prosperous_a state_n that_o use_v to_o choke_v the_o word_n they_o that_o will_v call_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o day_n of_o distress_n in_o their_o affliction_n will_v seek_v he_o earnest_o yet_o when_o his_o hand_n be_v take_v away_o they_o no_o more_o 15._o remember_v the_o lord_n their_o saviour_n but_o a_o child_n of_o god_n now_o in_o his_o prosperous_a condition_n he_o lose_v not_o his_o profession_n altogether_o though_o the_o lamp_n may_v be_v damp_a yet_o not_o extinguish_v and_o 2._o for_o adversity_n that_o indeed_o be_v a_o try_v time_n all_o this_o be_v come_v upon_o we_o yet_o have_v we_o not_o deal_v false_o in_o the_o covenant_n will_v the_o hypocrite_n 17._o always_o call_v upon_o god_n he_o will_v not_o call_v upon_o god_n always_o nor_o wait_v for_o he_o yea_o the_o time_n of_o affliction_n usual_o be_v a_o advantage_n to_o the_o people_n of_o god_n if_o ever_o their_o lamp_n burn_v bright_a than_o another_o it_o be_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o cold_a night_n of_o persecution_n and_o affliction_n a_o torch_n the_o more_o knock_v against_o any_o thing_n the_o more_o it_o burn_v second_o because_o they_o have_v within_o they_o a_o spring_n of_o oil_n that_o feed_v the_o lamp_n therefore_o it_o go_v not_o out_o it_o be_v set_v forth_o in_o another_o metaphor_n in_o that_o place_n of_o john_n out_o of_o his_o belly_n shall_v flow_v river_n of_o water_n spring_v up_o to_o eternal_a life_n now_o where_o there_o be_v 38._o this_o within_o the_o flame_n will_v live_v while_o there_o be_v oil_n to_o maintain_v it_o it_o be_v like_a fire_n in_o a_o man_n bosom_n he_o can_v carry_v it_o so_o sure_o but_o it_o will_v discover_v itself_o as_o fire_n in_o the_o bone_n not_o put_v out_o in_o obscure_a darkness_n o_o how_o fain_o will_v satan_n blow_v out_o the_o candle_n that_o we_o may_v walk_v in_o the_o darkness_n not_o know_v whither_o we_o go_v but_o it_o be_v hold_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n and_o it_o be_v above_o the_o reach_n of_o his_o poisonous_a breath_n to_o do_v it_o a_o damp_n of_o lust_n from_o our_o own_o heart_n if_o any_o thing_n will_v do_v it_o this_o will_v and_o it_o make_v they_o burn_v very_o dim_o and_o blue_a many_o time_n but_o yet_o can_v overcome_v the_o lamp_n may_v want_v trim_v but_o it_o be_v not_o out_o for_o the_o application_n then_o of_o this_o doctrine_n if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o believer_n be_v subject_a to_o such_o declining_n yea_o when_o they_o shall_v be_v at_o 1_o the_o best_a in_o their_o latter_a end_n when_o they_o shall_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n in_o old_a age_n that_o then_o they_o may_v be_v ready_a to_o wither_v or_o in_o a_o great_a part_n the_o leaf_n their_o profession_n may_v change_v colour_n and_o lose_v its_o greenness_n what_o shall_v this_o teach_v we_o all_o in_o the_o first_o place_n but_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o place_v our_o confidence_n in_o any_o thing_n which_o may_v fail_v we_o if_o any_o thing_n on_o this_o side_n the_o lord_n jesus_n himself_o may_v be_v trust_v in_o it_o may_v be_v grace_n for_o there_o be_v not_o any_o other_o so_o near_a approach_n to_o god_n without_o which_o angel_n be_v but_o devil_n the_o very_a perfection_n of_o saint_n and_o angel_n and_o yet_o because_o it_o have_v its_o imperfection_n therefore_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v trust_v to_o nothing_o indeed_o be_v more_o spiritual_a than_o grace_n the_o choice_a communication_n of_o the_o eternal_a spirit_n to_o the_o creature_n but_o yet_o consider_v in_o comparison_n with_o the_o god_n of_o grace_n it_o be_v but_o flesh_n if_o it_o be_v rest_v upon_o the_o strong_a mountain_n that_o a_o man_n will_v think_v shall_v never_o be_v shake_v yet_o sin_n and_o satan_n if_o the_o lord_n permit_v can_v get_v under_o it_o and_o blow_v it_o up_o yea_o if_o our_o grace_n be_v perfect_a yet_o we_o may_v not_o rest_v in_o it_o because_o yet_o it_o have_v its_o comparative_a imperfection_n itself_o be_v but_o a_o derivative_a and_o dependent_a be_v upon_o the_o god_n of_o grace_n at_o the_o best_a it_o be_v but_o a_o stream_n a_o beam_n though_o near_a the_o sun_n and_o near_o the_o fountain_n and_o but_o the_o water_n of_o a_o cistern_n and_o if_o whole_a before_o yet_o this_o rest_v upon_o it_o will_v make_v it_o a_o break_a cistern_n well_o then_o bretbren_a if_o our_o profession_n flourish_v never_o so_o if_o it_o be_v spring_v time_n with_o you_o trust_v not_o in_o it_o for_o there_o may_v come_v a_o fall_n after_o this_o spring_n there_o may_v come_v a_o time_n of_o scorch_a heat_n may_v make_v you_o wither_v in_o a_o great_a part_n at_o least_o though_o your_o lamp_n burn_v and_o shine_v never_o so_o glorious_o and_o the_o light_n gift_n and_o part_n but_o it_o be_v not_o as_o head_n of_o the_o invisible_a church_n who_o alone_o shall_v be_v save_v though_o as_o head_n of_o the_o visible_a church_n there_o may_v be_v a_o communication_n of_o some_o fatness_n and_o sweetness_n of_o the_o olive_n to_o they_o that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o ordinance_n and_o privilege_n of_o the_o church_n which_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v and_o again_o how_o many_o promise_n of_o remission_n of_o sin_n set_v forth_o in_o various_a expression_n every_o way_n to_o affect_v and_o meet_v with_o every_o man_n condition_n but_o that_o his_o grow_v from_o strength_n to_o strength_n at_o last_o he_o come_v to_o see_v it_o when_o sincerity_n of_o heart_n do_v more_o ordinary_o and_o strong_o prevail_v against_o the_o sly_a and_o subtle_a what_o they_o will_v brethren_n the_o appearance_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o notable_a evidence_n of_o our_o be_v clothe_v with_o the_o righteousness_n of_o
christ_n when_o we_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o the_o spirit_n for_o a_o man_n to_o pretend_v to_o have_v no_o condemnation_n upon_o he_o and_o yet_o walk_v after_o the_o flesh_n loose_o and_o vain_o wicked_o 13._o and_o yet_o never_o doubt_v nor_o question_v his_o condition_n i_o say_v that_o man_n be_v in_o a_o desperate_a security_n a_o lethargy_n it_o be_v very_o great_a
