nurse_n of_o child_n as_o parent_n where_o there_o be_v a_o concurrence_n of_o other_o qualification_n and_o no_o special_a hindrance_n and_o impediment_n that_o just_o lie_v in_o the_o way_n as_o a_o a_o evil_a time_n when_o it_o fall_v sudden_o upon_o they_o in_o eccles_n 9.12_o and_o it_o be_v the_o censure_n which_o the_o prophet_n jeremy_n pass_v to_o the_o like_a purpose_n upon_o the_o same_o kind_n of_o person_n that_o the_o stork_n in_o the_o heaven_n know_v her_o appoint_a time_n and_o the_o turtle_n and_o the_o crane_n and_o the_o swallow_n observe_v the_o time_n of_o their_o come_n but_o my_o people_n know_v not_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o lord_n jer._n 8.7_o and_o this_o be_v also_o here_o signify_v to_o we_o in_o this_o scripture_n which_o we_o have_v still_o before_o we_o where_o the_o apostle_n paul_n make_v mention_n of_o the_o day_n of_o christ_n come_v to_o judgement_n do_v represent_v it_o as_o a_o matter_n of_o surprisal_n and_o disappointment_n to_o the_o son_n of_o man_n the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n so_o come_v as_o a_o thief_n in_o the_o night_n for_o when_o they_o shall_v say_v peace_n and_o safety_n then_o sudden_a destruction_n come_v upon_o they_o as_o travail_v upon_o a_o woman_n with_o child_n etc._n etc._n which_o latter_a verse_n especial_o be_v that_o which_o be_v to_o be_v handle_v by_o we_o at_o this_o present_a time_n as_o a_o enlargement_n and_o confirmation_n of_o the_o former_a which_o we_o speak_v to_o the_o day_n before_o in_o the_o text_n itself_o there_o be_v two_o general_n part_v considerable_a the_o supposition_n and_o the_o inference_n the_o supposition_n that_o be_v of_o the_o sin_n to_o wit_n security_n in_o these_o word_n when_o they_o say_v peace_n and_o safety_n the_o inference_n that_o be_v of_o the_o punishment_n to_o wit_n sudden_a destruction_n in_o these_o word_n then_o sudden_a destruction_n come_v upon_o they_o etc._n etc._n we_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o of_o these_o part_n viz._n the_o supposition_n as_o point_v out_o the_o sin_n which_o be_v security_n in_o these_o word_n when_o they_o say_v peace_n and_o safety_n where_o it_o be_v suppose_v and_o take_v for_o grant_v that_o there_o be_v some_o kind_a ofperson_n in_o the_o world_n which_o do_v indeed_o speak_v so_o that_o say_v peace_n and_o safety_n that_o be_v which_o do_v conclude_v upon_o absolute_a quite_o and_o freedom_n from_o evil_a as_o happen_v unto_o they_o and_o so_o indeed_o there_o be_v wicked_a and_o carnal_a people_n the_o atheist_n and_o man_n of_o the_o world_n this_o be_v that_o which_o they_o do_v common_o say_v as_o be_v observable_a in_o they_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v here_o suppose_a of_o they_o when_o we_o say_v that_o they_o say_v it_o this_o say_n of_o they_o be_v to_o be_v take_v in_o its_o full_a latitude_n and_o that_o according_a to_o a_o threefold_a explication_n first_o they_o say_v it_o mental_o they_o say_v it_o in_o their_o mind_n second_o they_o say_v it_o verbal_o they_o say_v it_o in_o their_o mouth_n three_o they_o say_v it_o practical_o or_o real_o they_o say_v it_o in_o their_o life_n and_o carriage_n and_o conversation_n all_o these_o manner_n of_o way_n they_o say_v it_o first_o i_o say_v they_o say_v it_o mental_o they_o say_v it_o in_o their_o mind_n worldly_n man_n they_o do_v very_o much_o conclude_v and_o make_v account_n of_o their_o worldly_a prosperity_n and_o of_o the_o continuance_n of_o it_o to_o themselves_o their_o inward_a thought_n be_v that_o their_o house_n shall_v continue_v for_o ever_o and_o their_o dwelling-place_n punishment_n and_o condition_n the_o condition_n or_o punishment_n mention_v that_o be_v express_v in_o the_o word_n destruction_n the_o amplification_n of_o this_o punishment_n and_o condition_n that_o be_v express_v in_o these_o word_n it_o come_v upon_o they_o as_o travail_v upon_o a_o woman_n with_o child_n and_o they_o shall_v not_o escape_v it_o first_o for_o the_o condition_n or_o punishment_n itself_o which_o be_v here_o threaten_v to_o such_o kind_n of_o person_n which_o be_v before_o mention_v it_o be_v signify_v to_o be_v destruction_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d this_o be_v a_o very_a terrible_a word_n and_o we_o may_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o it_o here_o lie_v in_o the_o text_n according_a to_o a_o threefold_a gradation_n first_o in_o its_o negative_a conception_n second_o in_o its_o positive_a and_o three_o in_o its_o superlative_a this_o word_n destruction_n as_o it_o be_v here_o mention_v carry_v each_o of_o these_o intimation_n with_o it_o first_o it_o have_v its_o negative_a acception_n it_o be_v destruction_n it_o be_v not_o peace_n and_o safety_n it_o be_v peace_n and_o safety_n which_o those_o secure_a and_o presumptuous_a person_n before_o speak_v of_o promise_a to_o themselves_o and_o please_v themselves_o in_o the_o thought_n of_o but_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n happen_v to_o they_o and_o so_o it_o be_v a_o frustration_n and_o disappointment_n this_o be_v the_o lot_n and_o condition_n all_o along_o of_o wicked_a man_n that_o they_o have_v that_o least_o of_o all_o which_o they_o most_o of_o all_o look_n for_o they_o be_v cut_v short_a both_o of_o their_o desire_n and_o expectation_n which_o do_v fail_v and_o come_v to_o nought_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o be_v this_o because_o they_o go_v upon_o a_o ill_a ground_n and_o foundation_n where_o the_o foundation_n be_v but_o weak_a the_o building_n which_o be_v raise_v upon_o it_o must_v needs_o sink_v and_o fall_v to_o the_o ground_n now_o thus_o be_v the_o hope_n and_o expectation_n of_o all_o wicked_a person_n while_o they_o say_v peace_n and_o safety_n they_o be_v upon_o a_o weak_a and_o false_a bottom_n and_o ground_n which_o they_o proceed_v upon_o and_o that_o be_v fancy_n and_o lust_n and_o humour_n and_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o and_o what_o can_v follow_v upon_o such_o proceed_n as_o these_o but_o even_o miscarriage_n and_o disappointment_n itself_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o hypocrite_n shall_v perish_v this_o be_v good_a to_o be_v take_v notice_n of_o by_o we_o as_o a_o check_n upon_o all_o such_o extravagance_n as_o those_o be_v to_o restrain_v and_o keep_v man_n within_o the_o bound_n of_o majesty_n and_o holy_a awfulness_n that_o they_o may_v not_o be_v too_o full_a of_o confidence_n and_o vain_a expectation_n as_o they_o be_v sometime_o subject_a to_o be_v which_o there_o be_v nothing_o do_v so_o much_o cure_v they_o of_o as_o experience_n and_o sense_n of_o that_o which_o be_v otherwise_o as_o it_o be_v here_o declare_v to_o be_v in_o this_o scripture_n they_o say_v peace_n and_o safety_n and_o behold_v no_o such_o matter_n it_o be_v destruction_n that_o be_v the_o first_o acception_n of_o it_o in_o the_o negative_a what_o it_o be_v not_o but_o second_o here_o be_v also_o the_o positive_a what_o it_o be_v and_o that_o be_v the_o quite_o contrary_a and_o opposite_a hereunto_o it_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v peace_n and_o safety_n as_o that_o instead_o of_o it_o it_o be_v affliction_n and_o trouble_n god_n do_v not_o content_v himself_o only_o to_o disappoint_v wicked_a man_n of_o their_o hope_n and_o of_o the_o of_o the_o good_a which_o they_o expect_v but_o also_o to_o surprise_v they_o with_o fear_n and_o the_o evil_n which_o they_o have_v not_o expect_v instead_o of_o peace_n to_o follow_v they_o with_o horror_n and_o instead_o of_o safety_n to_o expose_v they_o to_o danger_n not_o only_o to_o punish_v they_o with_o the_o punishment_n of_o loss_n but_o with_o punishment_n of_o sense_n they_o wait_v for_o light_n but_o behold_v obscurity_n for_o brightness_n but_o they_o walk_v in_o darkness_n isa_n 59.9_o their_o sorrow_n shall_v be_v multiply_v that_o hasten_v after_o other_o god_n psal_n 16._o way_n of_o wickedness_n be_v way_n of_o affliction_n to_o such_o person_n as_o walk_v in_o they_o so_o far_o be_v they_o from_o peace_n and_o safety_n but_o three_o that_o be_v not_o all_o here_o be_v the_o superlative_a sense_n also_o which_o be_v considerable_a of_o we_o and_o that_o be_v dectruction_n and_o absolute_a ruin_n which_o carry_v it_o further_o yet_o for_o the_o complete_n of_o the_o punishment_n of_o such_o person_n they_o be_v not_o only_o disappoint_v of_o that_o peace_n and_o safety_n which_o they_o expect_v nor_o they_o be_v not_o only_o exercise_v with_o that_o affliction_n which_o be_v quite_o contrary_a thereunto_o but_o they_o be_v moreover_o absolute_o destroy_v and_o bring_v to_o nought_o upon_o the_o wicked_a god_n shall_v rain_v snare_n fire_n and_o brimstone_n and_o a_o horribla_fw-mi tempest_n this_o shall_v be_v the_o portion_n of_o their_o cup_n psal_n 11.6_o destruction_n it_o be_v of_o two_o sort_n and_o come_v under_o a_o double_a consideration_n either_o as_o temporal_a or_o as_o eternal_a and_o each_o of_o they_o be_v here_o considerable_a as_o the_o reward_n of_o wicked_a man_n both_o one_o and_o tother_o first_o for_o temporal_a they_o and_o therefore_o job_n put_v that_o question_n be_v there_o not_o destruction_n to_o the_o wicked_a and_o a_o strange_a punishment_n to_o the_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n be_v there_o not_o that_o be_v indeed_o there_o be_v it_o be_v a_o question_n that_o carry_v a_o strong_a assertion_n and_o asseveration_n with_o it_o there_o be_v many_o person_n who_o by_o their_o dissolute_a course_n do_v bring_v outward_a ruin_n and_o misery_n upon_o themselves_o and_o do_v undo_v themselves_o as_o to_o this_o present_a world_n but_o second_o as_o for_o eternal_a destruction_n this_o do_v to_o be_v sure_a more_o especial_o fall_v upon_o they_o as_o most_o proper_a to_o they_o destruction_n that_o be_v damnation_n and_o the_o punishment_n of_o body_n and_o soul_n for_o ever_o in_o hell_n this_o be_v that_o which_o here_o seem_v more_o especial_o to_o be_v intend_v in_o the_o text_n though_o the_o other_o be_v not_o exclude_v because_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v more_o particular_o of_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n that_o be_v as_o i_o have_v already_o show_v and_o of_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n with_o the_o consequent_n of_o it_o now_o this_o be_v that_o which_o in_o that_o day_n shall_v be_v inflict_v upon_o such_o kind_n of_o people_n the_o wicked_a shall_v be_v turn_v into_o hell_n and_o all_o the_o nation_n that_o forget_v god_n psal_n 9.17_o this_o be_v the_o sentence_n which_o christ_n shall_v pass_v upon_o they_o when_o he_o sit_v upon_o his_o throne_n of_o judgement_n depart_v from_o i_o you_o curse_v into_o everlasting_a fire_n prepare_v for_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o angel_n matth._n 25.41_o and_o according_o it_o be_v there_o say_v that_o they_o shall_v go_v away_o into_o everlasting_a punishment_n ver_fw-la 46_o of_o the_o same_o chapter_n and_o 2_o thes_n 1.9_o who_o shall_v be_v punish_v with_o everlasting_a destruction_n from_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o from_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o power_n and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o condition_n itself_o or_o punishment_n mention_v in_o the_o word_n destruction_n which_o we_o have_v consider_v three_o manner_n of_o way_n in_o its_o negative_a sense_n in_o its_o positive_a and_o in_o its_o superlative_a the_o second_o be_v the_o amplification_n or_o aggravation_n of_o this_o condition_n which_o be_v considerable_a in_o three_o thing_n more_o first_o in_o the_o suddenness_n of_o it_o second_o in_o the_o vehemency_n of_o it_o and_o three_o in_o the_o unavoidableness_n each_o of_o which_o be_v illustrate_v from_o a_o very_a proper_a and_o significant_a similitude_n of_o travail_n upon_o a_o woman_n with_o child_n as_o most_o lively_o express_v it_o we_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o aggravation_n and_o that_o be_v the_o suddenness_n or_o speediness_n of_o it_o it_o be_v sudden_a destruction_n
〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d this_o agree_v very_o well_o with_o the_o resemblance_n which_o we_o have_v before_o in_o the_o verse_n immediate_o precede_v where_o it_o be_v say_v the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n so_o come_v as_o a_o thief_n in_o the_o night_n a_o thief_n he_o come_v on_o the_o sudden_a before_o people_n be_v aware_a of_o he_o and_o so_o do_v also_o this_o destruction_n here_o mention_v it_o be_v a_o surprisal_n and_o take_v they_o on_o the_o sudden_a therefore_o it_o be_v again_o also_o very_o fit_o compare_v and_o resemble_v to_o travail_v of_o a_o woman_n with_o child_n which_o come_v on_o the_o sudden_a whereby_o the_o party_n herself_o do_v not_o think_v of_o it_o or_o imagine_v it_o will_v come_v while_o she_o be_v mind_v other_o thing_n her_o travail_n surprise_v she_o this_o at_o the_o first_o apprehension_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v somewhat_o otherwise_o for_o a_o woman_n in_o travail_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o warn_v give_v she_o before_o her_o travail_n come_v in_o the_o expectation_n of_o so_o many_o month_n go_v before_o which_o be_v so_o eminent_a as_o that_o it_o be_v emphatical_o call_v so_o the_o time_n in_o which_o she_o look_v therefore_o it_o be_v not_o a_o absolute_a surprise_n for_o she_o expect_v it_o and_o make_v account_n of_o it_o and_o call_v it_o her_o reckon_n but_o yet_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v sudden_a for_o all_o that_o and_o that_o in_o this_o consideration_n first_o because_o though_o the_o time_n itself_o be_v fix_v and_o determine_v yet_o she_o for_o her_o particular_a may_v mistake_v in_o the_o determination_n of_o that_o time_n she_o may_v carry_v it_o either_o near_o or_o further_o off_o than_o she_o shall_v or_o than_o it_o be_v and_o so_o when_o it_o come_v it_o come_v on_o the_o sudden_a because_o she_o be_v not_o certain_o advise_v of_o the_o come_n of_o it_o second_o though_o the_o time_n in_o general_n may_v be_v guest_n at_o yet_o the_o particular_a moment_n and_o instant_n be_v uncertain_a it_o come_v on_o a_o sudden_a so_o namely_o as_o to_o the_o direct_a hour_n and_o present_a season_n of_o it_o three_o though_o it_o may_v be_v certain_a regular_o yet_o it_o be_v very_o uncertain_a accidental_o because_o there_o be_v many_o abortion_n and_o mischance_n and_o miscarriage_n which_o in_o such_o case_n she_o be_v subject_a unto_o and_o thus_o be_v it_o answerable_a in_o this_o business_n whereof_o we_o now_o speak_v as_o to_o the_o judgement_n of_o wicked_a man_n it_o may_v be_v very_o well_o say_v to_o be_v sudden_a destruction_n even_o as_o travail_v upon_o a_o woman_n with_o child_n because_o though_o they_o have_v many_o warning_n and_o admonition_n of_o it_o aforehand_o yet_o they_o themselves_o do_v not_o ordinary_o so_o observe_v its_o throw_n with_o it_o even_o so_o do_v this_o destruction_n invade_v wicked_a man_n the_o three_o and_o last_o be_v the_o unavoidableness_n of_o it_o and_o they_o shall_v not_o escape_v 〈◊〉_d destruction_n come_v upon_o they_o and_o they_o shall_v not_o escape_v it_o that_o be_v they_o shall_v not_o obstruct_v it_o or_o hinder_v it_o that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v and_o there_o shall_v nor_o she_o can_v put_v away_o her_o travail_n at_o such_o a_o time_n as_o it_o do_v come_v no_o more_o shall_v wicked_a person_n be_v able_a to_o do_v with_o this_o destruction_n from_o god_n which_o be_v here_o threaten_v to_o they_o they_o shall_v not_o escape_v it_o to_o divert_v it_o nor_o they_o shall_v not_o escape_v it_o to_o remove_v it_o it_o shall_v come_v whether_o they_o will_v or_o divers_a instance_n and_o example_n in_o the_o old_a world_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o deluge_n in_o the_o sodomite_n in_o reference_n to_o their_o destruction_n with_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n from_o heaven_n in_o the_o egyptian_n in_o reference_n to_o their_o overthrow_n and_o destruction_n in_o the_o red_a sea_n and_o so_o it_o shall_v likewise_o be_v with_o wicked_a man_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n and_o destruction_n then_o when_o they_o least_o fear_v it_o it_o shall_v then_o most_o of_o all_o apprehend_v they_o and_o seize_v upon_o they_o nabuchadnezzar_n while_o he_o be_v in_o his_o pomp_n and_o glory_n and_o great_a triumph_n and_o boaft_v of_o his_o great_a prosperity_n be_v not_o this_o great_a babel_n that_o i_o have_v build_v
