evil_a example_n of_o they_o lay_v a_o temptation_n on_o sincere_a and_o upright_a man_n and_o woman_n what_o do_v such_o and_o such_o do_v they_o be_v far_o rich_a than_o i_o and_o they_o will_v do_v nothing_o to_o these_o let_v i_o speak_v one_o word_n why_o will_v you_o do_v no_o more_o for_o god_n because_o some_o who_o love_v he_o not_o will_v do_v nothing_o alas_o you_o have_v need_n do_v all_o purity_n proceed_v from_o god_n and_o all_o sin_n proceed_v from_o satan_n god_n strive_v to_o promote_v the_o one_o and_o the_o devil_n labour_v to_o promote_v the_o other_o as_o god_n kingdom_n be_v set_v up_o in_o the_o world_n and_o maintain_v by_o holiness_n and_o spiritual_a sanctity_n so_o the_o devil_n kingdom_n be_v set_v up_o and_o uphold_v by_o sin_n and_o filthiness_n wicked_a one_o they_o have_v receive_v and_o do_v subject_a themselves_o to_o satan_n that_o unclean_a and_o filthy_a spirit_n he_o be_v king_n and_o lord_n over_o they_o the_o devil_n have_v get_v possession_n by_o craft_n he_o entice_v our_o first_o parent_n to_o open_v the_o door_n to_o he_o they_o give_v he_o the_o first_o entertainment_n it_o be_v then_o he_o take_v possession_n and_o thereby_o at_o once_o corrupt_v all_o that_o be_v in_o the_o house_n i_o mean_v all_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o such_o a_o degree_n that_o they_o all_o natural_o side_n with_o satan_n and_o be_v for_o he_o and_o be_v fill_v with_o enmity_n against_o god_n 7._o and_o oppose_v and_o resist_v his_o spirit_n and_o rebel_n against_o the_o light_n wicked_a man_n have_v rather_o be_v under_o the_o tyrannical_a government_n of_o the_o devil_n than_o to_o be_v rule_v and_o govern_v by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o from_o hence_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n they_o rather_o choose_v to_o have_v wicked_a earthly_a ruler_n and_o tyrannical_a king_n to_o be_v over_o they_o than_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o a_o prince_n who_o be_v a_o enemy_n to_o wickedness_n tyranny_n and_o oppression_n this_o show_v the_o blindness_n and_o miserable_a state_n and_o condition_n of_o all_o wicked_a and_o ungodly_a men._n we_o may_v further_o note_v also_o 3._o that_o satan_n may_v lose_v some_o ground_n in_o sinner_n heart_n iii_o he_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v go_v out_o of_o they_o and_o they_o may_v become_v sober_a and_o civilise_a and_o yet_o may_v be_v in_o the_o gall_n of_o bitterness_n and_o their_o heart_n notwithstanding_o may_v be_v still_o satan_n habitation_n let_v these_o man_n change_v their_o life_n and_o become_v other_o man_n in_o the_o view_n of_o the_o world_n alter_v their_o course_n of_o life_n yet_o they_o be_v miserable_a satan_n have_v spiritual_a power_n and_o dominion_n over_o they_o he_o have_v a_o strong_a party_n in_o their_o heart_n when_o he_o seem_v to_o be_v go_v out_o and_o know_v they_o be_v his_o still_o and_o own_v they_o as_o his_o dwell_a place_n when_o he_o can_v meet_v with_o entertainment_n in_o other_o place_n when_o saint_n afford_v he_o no_o encouragement_n but_o displease_v and_o defy_v he_o and_o their_o heart_n be_v as_o dry_a place_n he_o can_v nevertheless_o return_v at_o pleasure_n to_o his_o old_a habitation_n and_o there_o he_o enter_v and_o dwell_v let_v they_o change_v their_o religion_n yet_o they_o be_v satan_n slave_n still_o he_o matter_n not_o if_o they_o leave_v popery_n and_o cleave_v to_o prelacy_n and_o so_o become_v protestant_n in_o general_n nay_o embrace_v a_o more_o refine_a sort_n of_o people_n and_o take_v upon_o they_o a_o more_o strict_a profession_n of_o religion_n yet_o still_o they_o belong_v to_o he_o if_o they_o be_v not_o true_o regenerate_v and_o renew_v in_o their_o soul_n let_v they_o be_v presbyterian_o independent_o or_o baptist_n it_o signify_v nothing_o they_o be_v still_o the_o
notion_n of_o religion_n though_o may_v be_v false_a and_o corrupt_a notion_n but_o if_o they_o can_v but_o bring_v a_o person_n to_o receive_v their_o principle_n and_o external_a ordinance_n than_o they_o glory_v though_o hereby_o he_o be_v make_v twofold_a perhaps_o sevenfold_a more_o the_o child_n of_o hell_n than_o before_o 15._o the_o poor_a deceive_v wretch_n think_v this_o change_n of_o religion_n be_v a_o true_a conversion_n and_o so_o never_o look_v out_o for_o any_o other_o but_o speak_v peace_n to_o his_o own_o soul_n judge_v all_o be_v well_o within_o they_o doubt_v not_o but_o they_o have_v religion_n enough_o when_o it_o do_v commend_v they_o to_o meâ—_n and_o be_v take_v for_o saint_n by_o saint_n their_o great_a labour_n be_v to_o keep_v up_o their_o name_n and_o credit_n in_o religion_n so_o that_o if_o they_o may_v pass_v unsuspected_a among_o their_o fellow-creature_n or_o have_v the_o approbation_n of_o man_n and_o that_o if_o none_o can_v charge_v they_o just_o with_o any_o immoral_a action_n they_o rest_v satisfy_v whereas_o the_o great_a care_n of_o a_o true_a child_n of_o god_n be_v so_o to_o walk_v and_o labour_n that_o he_o may_v be_v accept_v of_o god_n and_o have_v his_o approbation_n 7._o self_n be_v common_o in_o the_o bottom_n in_o all_o they_o do_v they_o aim_v not_o at_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n but_o have_v a_o carnal_a design_n self-advantage_n or_o self-applause_n etc._n etc._n this_o move_v and_o quicken_v they_o and_o animate_v they_o in_o all_o they_o perform_v in_o religious_a service_n and_o if_o they_o miss_v of_o their_o end_n be_v it_o what_o it_o will_v they_o soon_o be_v weary_a and_o grow_v cold_a and_o flat_a in_o their_o spirit_n and_o become_v quarrelsome_a and_o seek_v offence_n and_o disturb_v the_o peace_n of_o the_o church_n to_o who_o they_o belong_v 8._o moreover_o they_o be_v not_o the_o same_o at_o home_n which_o they_o be_v abroad_o not_o in_o private_a what_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v in_o public_a may_v be_v seldom_o pray_v either_o in_o their_o family_n or_o closet_n or_o if_o they_o do_v it_o be_v with_o little_a zeal_n enlargedness_n or_o affection_n to_o god_n there_o be_v divers_a other_o mark_n and_o character_n of_o hypocrite_n and_o of_o these_o false_a professor_n which_o i_o must_v pass_v by_o because_o i_o will_v speak_v a_o word_n or_o two_o of_o application_n in_o the_o last_o place_n the_o latter_a state_n of_o these_o man_n be_v worse_o than_o the_o first_o 1._o because_o god_n oftentimes_o leave_v they_o to_o judicial_a blindness_n and_o to_o the_o hardness_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n according_a as_o it_o be_v write_v 8._o god_n have_v give_v they_o the_o spirit_n of_o slumber_n eye_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o see_v and_o ear_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o hear_v unto_o this_o day_n even_o thus_o as_o god_n deal_v with_o the_o unbelieve_a jew_n or_o the_o people_n of_o that_o generation_n so_o i_o say_v he_o oftentimes_o deal_v with_o other_o formal_a hypocrite_n etc._n etc._n and_o for_o the_o very_a same_o cause_n doubtless_o it_o be_v for_o those_o spiritual_a sin_n unbelief_n and_o hypocrisy_n the_o pharisee_n and_o other_o people_n of_o israel_n be_v reject_v and_o cast_v off_o and_o o_o what_o wrath_n be_v they_o lay_v under_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v say_v to_o come_v upon_o they_o to_o the_o uttermost_a moreover_o some_o of_o these_o false_a and_o counterfeit_a professor_n also_o fall_v into_o the_o very_a same_o sin_n and_o horrid_a abomination_n they_o be_v guilty_a of_o before_o they_o make_v any_o profession_n of_o religion_n nay_o and_o they_o prove_v more_o vile_a and_o notorious_a in_o wickedness_n than_o ever_o it_o have_v often_o be_v see_v that_o this_o sort_n of_o man_n who_o forsake_v the_o way_n of_o god_n which_o they_o seem_v to_o own_o and_o profess_v have_v at_o last_o appear_v more_o impudent_a in_o sin_n than_o the_o vile_a man_n be_v ringleader_n to_o all_o lewd_a and_o curse_a practice_n and_o deed_n of_o darkness_n so_o that_o the_o same_o unclean_a spirit_n return_v into_o some_o of_o they_o in_o the_o same_o shape_n also_o though_o i_o can_v see_v any_o ground_n to_o believe_v it_o happen_v so_o to_o they_o all_o for_o doubtless_o many_o of_o they_o retain_v their_o seem_a zeal_n and_o external_a profession_n of_o religion_n and_o outward_a holiness_n until_o they_o die_v evident_a it_o be_v our_o saviour_n apply_v this_o direful_a doom_n on_o the_o people_n of_o that_o generation_n viz._n the_o jew_n particular_o to_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n see_v the_o 38th_o verse_n yet_o certain_a it_o be_v many_o of_o they_o never_o turn_v to_o open_a profaneness_n but_o die_v in_o their_o unbelief_n whilst_o they_o abide_v proud_a and_o zealous_a pharisee_n yet_o i_o see_v no_o reason_n to_o question_v but_o this_o return_a devil_n and_o those_o seven_o other_o spirit_n more_o wicked_a be_v apply_v to_o they_o as_o well_o as_o to_o other_o who_o fall_v away_o from_o their_o seem_a piety_n and_o profession_n but_o of_o some_o of_o they_o especial_o it_o have_v happen_v according_a to_o what_o st._n peter_n speak_v 20._o for_o if_o after_o they_o have_v escape_v the_o pollution_n of_o the_o world_n through_o the_o knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o be_v again_o overcome_v the_o latter_a end_n of_o that_o man_n be_v worse_a than_o the_o first_o that_o be_v such_o a_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n as_o bring_v with_o it_o or_o do_v produce_v a_o outward_a reformation_n of_o life_n for_o as_o the_o elect_n can_v be_v deceive_v so_o they_o can_v fall_v final_o have_v the_o seed_n remain_v in_o they_o can_v sin_v unto_o death_n they_o be_v say_v to_o have_v eternal_a life_n abide_v in_o they_o 15._o because_o say_v christ_n i_o live_v you_o shall_v live_v also_o he_o that_o have_v begin_v that_o good_a work_n in_o they_o will_v perform_v it_o to_o the_o day_n of_o christ_n 6._o they_o be_v pass_v from_o death_n unto_o life_n and_o to_o have_v the_o life_n wash_v or_o cleanse_v and_o another_o to_o have_v the_o heart_n cleanse_v furthermore_o some_o of_o this_o sort_n who_o have_v receive_v those_o high_a though_o common_a illumination_n of_o the_o spirit_n even_o to_o such_o a_o degree_n as_o they_o be_v say_v to_o be_v enlighten_v and_o to_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o heavenly_a gift_n 6.4_o and_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v in_o the_o common_a gift_n and_o grace_n thereof_o and_o yet_o after_o all_o they_o fall_v away_o nay_o and_o so_o fall_v that_o they_o can_v never_o be_v renew_v again_o by_o repentance_n therefore_o some_o of_o these_o person_n be_v they_o who_o sin_n the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o shall_v never_o be_v forgive_v profane_a person_n doubtless_o do_v not_o sin_v this_o sin_n nor_o can_v true_a christian_n commit_v it_o they_o can_v sin_v unto_o death_n no_o no_o these_o be_v those_o miserable_a soul_n those_o curse_a apostate_n who_o be_v liable_a and_o in_o danger_n to_o sin_v the_o unpardonable_a sin_n nay_o and_o observable_a it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n in_o the_o verse_n before_o he_o speak_v this_o parable_n intimate_v that_o those_o very_a pharisee_n etc._n etc._n be_v guilty_a of_o or_o in_o danger_n of_o be_v charge_v with_o this_o sin_n see_v vers_fw-la 30._o they_o show_v so_o much_o malice_n against_o our_o bless_a saviour_n as_o to_o charge_v he_o with_o a_o devil_n 28._o and_o that_o he_o cast_v out_o devil_n by_o beelzebub_n but_o when_o the_o pharisee_n hear_v it_o they_o say_v this_o fellow_n do_v not_o cast_v out_o devil_n but_o by_o beelzebub_n the_o prince_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o from_o hence_o he_o say_v all_o manner_n of_o sin_n and_o blasphemy_n shall_v be_v
