shall_v be_v holy_a that_o be_v both_o parent_n that_o dedicate_v and_o devote_v they_o to_o god_n other_o take_v it_o of_o foederall_a holiness_n and_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o the_o child_n do_v belong_v to_o the_o covenant_n of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o the_o parent_n and_o as_o well_o as_o if_o both_o parent_n have_v be_v believer_n thus_o diverse_o be_v the_o word_n take_v to_o issue_v all_o note_v these_o thing_n first_o that_o it_o pertain_v to_o child_n of_o one_o at_o least_o believe_a which_o be_v evident_a because_o he_o speak_v to_o a_o case_n not_o of_o all_o mankind_n but_o of_o a_o infidel_n with_o a_o believer_n therefore_o the_o argument_n must_v be_v take_v from_o some_o thing_n proper_a to_o a_o believer_n so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o first_o argument_n though_o all_o thing_n natural_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o use_n of_o they_o be_v common_a to_o infidel_n with_o believer_n as_o to_o eat_v sleep_n etc._n etc._n yet_o the_o impurity_n of_o conscience_n defile_v the_o use_n of_o every_o thing_n to_o a_o infidel_n and_o the_o purity_n of_o conscience_n purify_v the_o use_n of_o every_o thing_n to_o a_o believer_n 1_o tim._n 4.4_o and_o as_o this_o be_v take_v from_o something_o proper_a to_o a_o believer_n so_o in_o this_o of_o child_n holiness_n therefore_o legitimation_n can_v be_v mean_v because_o that_o be_v no_o more_o proper_a to_o a_o believer_n then_o a_o infidel_n pilat_z be_v as_o legitimate_a as_o paul_n though_o not_o so_o holy_a never_o be_v it_o hear_v that_o infidel_n child_n be_v call_v holy_a nor_o can_v a_o instance_n be_v give_v of_o this_o notion_n viz._n that_o a_o holy_a child_n shall_v signify_v legitimate_a again_o to_o make_v marriage_n lawful_a it_o be_v not_o necessary_a that_o the_o party_n at_o least_o one_o of_o they_o be_v a_o believer_n else_o there_o be_v no_o lawful_a marriage_n among_o infidel_n the_o question_n be_v not_o therefore_o of_o legitimate_a marriage_n but_o of_o legitimate_a marriage_n pollute_v it_o be_v to_o no_o purpose_n to_o argue_v from_o legitimacie_n of_o child_n to_o prove_v that_o for_o child_n be_v always_o legitimate_a from_o lawful_a marriage_n whether_o the_o marriage_n be_v unclean_a and_o impure_a or_o not_o therefore_o it_o can_v be_v mean_v of_o legitimacie_n second_o it_o be_v speak_v of_o something_o present_a notwithstanding_o the_o disparity_n of_o religion_n continue_v this_o be_v manifest_a because_o the_o believer_n must_v not_o depart_v from_o the_o infidel_n willing_a to_o cohabite_v because_o the_o child_n be_v holy_a now_o if_o he_o shall_v mean_v when_o the_o infidel_n party_n be_v convert_v or_o the_o child_n afterward_o this_o be_v uncertain_a whether_o ever_o it_o shall_v be_v or_o no_o the_o question_n be_v leave_v unresolved_a the_o scruple_n be_v not_o remove_v and_o it_o be_v uncertain_a from_o thence_o whether_o ever_o it_o shall_v be_v a_o pure_a marriage_n or_o no_o and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n be_v not_o the_o exposition_n therefore_o of_o holiness_n of_o child_n in_o respect_n of_o future_a and_o what_o may_v be_v be_v not_o sound_a i_o take_v it_o therefore_o of_o foederall_a holiness_n whereby_o the_o child_n be_v with_o their_o believe_a parent_n take_v by_o god_n to_o be_v his_o and_o by_o he_o put_v under_o his_o covenant_n and_o so_o they_o continue_v when_o man_n of_o year_n though_o they_o never_o have_v any_o further_a grace_n wrought_v in_o they_o nor_o have_v any_o other_o state_n upon_o they_o than_o what_o they_o have_v when_o they_o be_v bear_v nor_o be_v they_o right_a that_o do_v expound_v it_o to_o be_v all_o one_o with_o the_o former_a of_o the_o infidel_n sanctify_v to_o the_o believe_a party_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v you_o need_v not_o question_v and_o of_o thy_o seed_n both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n be_v include_v and_o of_o old_a infant_n as_o well_o as_o man_n of_o year_n and_o therefore_o circumcise_v than_o infant_n now_o also_o and_o so_o to_o be_v baptize_v but_o under_o that_o promise_n both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n be_v include_v and_o their_o infant_n and_o for_o that_o cause_n circumcise_v ergo_fw-la so_o be_v infant_n now_o and_o for_o that_o cause_n to_o be_v baptize_v first_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o abraham_n and_o to_o his_o seed_n which_o be_v both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n and_o therefore_o make_v unto_o he_o in_o be_v do_v it_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a if_o any_o shall_v say_v that_o believer_n be_v the_o seed_n of_o abraham_n i_o answer_v so_o it_o be_v among_o the_o jew_n rom._n 9.6_o 7_o 8._o the_o child_n by_o christ_n come_v to_o which_o i_o answer_v though_o they_o offer_v sacrifice_n before_o abraham_n day_n and_o they_o after_o abraham_n day_n circumcise_v yet_o before_o moses_n time_n god_n manifest_v not_o his_o will_n in_o a_o testamentary_a dispensation_n nor_o can_v we_o proper_o say_v that_o those_o be_v abolish_v by_o christ_n come_n be_v remove_v before_o by_o moses_n at_o least_o alter_v by_o a_o new_a institution_n nor_o be_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o melchisedec_n nor_o his_o priesthood_n abolish_v which_o be_v before_o moses_n as_o be_v aaron_n but_o unto_o melchisedec_n our_o saviour_n succeed_v so_o that_o these_o exception_n may_v well_o have_v be_v spare_v see_v the_o doctrine_n contain_v in_o the_o proposition_n be_v sound_a and_o wholesome_a and_o the_o contrary_a unsound_a and_o hurtful_a yet_o before_o i_o go_v from_o this_o proposition_n let_v i_o commend_v this_o unto_o you_o all_o that_o the_o reason_n why_o they_o will_v weaken_v this_o proposition_n be_v because_o they_o will_v maintain_v that_o opinion_n that_o the_o covenant_n make_v with_o abraham_n be_v a_o carnal_a covenant_n and_o of_o the_o flesh_n apply_v all_o those_o scripture_n that_o speak_v by_o way_n of_o derogation_n hither_o when_o as_o they_o be_v speak_v of_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o not_o of_o this_o period_n from_o abraham_n which_o be_v the_o everlasting_a covenant_n of_o god_n continue_v with_o jew_n and_o now_o to_o we_o gentile_n and_o the_o same_o for_o ever_o and_o so_o my_o proposition_n be_v not_o answer_v nor_o refute_v to_o the_o four_o of_o child_n capacity_n to_o receive_v all_o grace_n necessary_a to_o union_n with_o christ_n and_o justification_n to_o life_n thereby_o as_o well_o as_o man_n of_o year_n he_o yield_v only_o deny_v it_o to_o be_v manifest_a to_o we_o which_o this_o or_o that_o nor_o of_o believer_n child_n more_o than_o infidel_n i_o answer_v i_o grant_v it_o we_o can_v conclude_v it_o of_o this_o or_o that_o but_o of_o believer_n child_n to_o be_v his_o as_o he_o do_v and_o we_o shall_v show_v it_o afterward_o be_v a_o sufficient_a ground_n to_o i_o to_o think_v a_o believer_n child_n to_o be_v justify_v and_o sanctify_v which_o though_o i_o may_v be_v mistake_v and_o my_o judgement_n in_o this_o case_n be_v not_o infallible_a yet_o it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o i_o can_v have_v of_o any_o man_n of_o year_n of_o who_o state_n i_o can_v judge_v infallible_o to_o the_o five_o where_o i_o say_v baptism_n be_v not_o the_o first_o grace_n but_o a_o second_o be_v a_o seal_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n as_o circumcision_n of_o old_a rom._n 4.11_o which_o must_v be_v presuppose_v or_o else_o baptism_n not_o to_o be_v administer_v he_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v well_o to_o be_v heed_v of_o all_o especial_o those_o that_o maintain_v infant_n baptism_n have_v no_o ground_n to_o conclude_v that_o infant_n have_v a_o first_o grace_n rom._n 4.11_o will_v prove_v no_o such_o thing_n it_o reply_v 1._o baptism_n be_v not_o the_o first_o grace_n but_o something_o precede_v it_o to_o which_o baptism_n be_v add_v as_o a_o seal_n and_o if_o child_n have_v not_o some_o former_a grace_n to_o and_o proselyte_n at_o least_o in_o our_o judgement_n some_o he_o make_v partaker_n of_o it_o at_o the_o time_n of_o seal_v both_o concur_v some_o after_o and_o some_o never_o at_o all_o 3._o that_o we_o on_o god_n part_n signify_v and_o confirm_v that_o he_o will_v make_v good_a his_o offer_n on_o our_o part_n that_o we_o believe_v this_o offer_n and_o abide_v in_o it_o and_o to_o apply_v all_o god_n offer_v abraham_n the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n he_o believe_v god_n seal_v and_o abraham_n both_o again_o god_n continue_v the_o dispensation_n of_o this_o offer_n to_o esau_n and_o jacob_n and_o so_o all_o infant_n of_o the_o jew_n after_n be_v willing_a to_o bestow_v it_o upon_o they_o god_n set_v his_o seal_n to_o confirm_v he_o be_v willing_a esau_n have_v not_o the_o rite_n the_o dispensation_n of_o god_n offer_v of_o righteousness_n with_o which_o their_o father_n at_o first_o close_v and_o be_v partaker_n of_o and_o which_o be_v one_o special_a ground_n why_o those_o infant_n be_v circumcise_v and_o be_v now_o a_o ground_n of_o infant_n baptise_v and_o though_o many_o than_o be_v not_o and_o many_o now_o be_v not_o partaker_n of_o that_o grace_n offer_v and_o seal_v yet_o that_o do_v not_o make_v it_o no_o grace_n but_o on_o god_n part_v offer_v and_o seal_v it_o be_v the_o same_o without_o alteration_n that_o it_o be_v to_o they_o who_o receive_v it_o thereby_o bear_v pure_a of_o they_o and_o holy_a in_o that_o estate_n which_o can_v not_o be_v if_o the_o society_n of_o marriage_n be_v pollute_v this_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o word_n yet_o what_o holiness_n be_v here_o mean_v have_v trouble_v man_n who_o have_v travel_v with_o variety_n in_o expound_v or_o torture_v these_o few_o word_n some_o will_v have_v they_o understand_v political_o and_o that_o two_o way_n 1._o in_o respect_n of_o the_o present_a child_n bear_v of_o they_o which_o can_v not_o be_v legitimate_a if_o their_o marriage_n be_v not_o lawful_a 2._o in_o respect_n of_o those_o child_n they_o may_v have_v by_o other_o if_o they_o shall_v forsake_v this_o marriage_n and_o betake_v they_o to_o another_o those_o child_n will_v be_v bastard_n some_o ceremonial_o of_o uncleanness_n of_o child_n beget_v in_o time_n of_o the_o woman_n disease_n and_o be_v holy_a when_o the_o infidel_n party_n forbear_v that_o time_n which_o be_v absurd_a and_o groundless_a some_o take_v it_o religious_o but_o here_o they_o differ_v some_o will_v have_v it_o to_o mean_v future_a holiness_n which_o the_o parent_n by_o cohabitation_n may_v make_v the_o child_n partaker_n of_o either_o obtain_v it_o may_v be_v baptize_v or_o by_o counsel_n when_o they_o come_v to_o age_n but_o if_o they_o forsake_v the_o infidel_n party_n than_o the_o child_n will_v remain_v in_o infidelity_n still_o other_o take_v it_o for_o present_a holiness_n yet_o not_o in_o one_o sense_n for_o some_o conceive_v thus_o that_o the_o believer_n abide_v and_o gain_v the_o infidel_n party_n the_o child_n
be_v a_o seal_n as_o well_o as_o a_o sign_n and_o do_v not_o only_o signify_v but_o confirm_v and_o may_v i_o not_o say_v the_o same_o of_o baptism_n mutatis_fw-la mutandis_fw-la and_o for_o that_o end_n to_o be_v administer_v to_o infant_n now_o that_o they_o by_o this_o mean_n may_v be_v distinguish_v and_o thereby_o interest_v in_o all_o the_o privilege_n of_o law_n and_o ordinance_n and_o minister_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v mean_n to_o set_v forth_o christ_n come_v and_o to_o mind_v we_o of_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o father_n and_o that_o they_o may_v be_v train_v up_o therein_o where_o i_o add_v that_o by_o baptism_n i_o mean_v that_o outward_a part_n of_o baptism_n by_o a_o lawful_a minister_n with_o water_n in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n which_o be_v often_o separate_v from_o the_o inward_a in_o the_o party_n baptize_v and_o conclude_v this_o to_o be_v true_a baptism_n else_o simon_n magus_n and_o those_o false_a brethren_n gal._n 2._o be_v not_o baptize_v have_v not_o that_o inward_a and_o if_o they_o have_v repent_v must_v have_v be_v baptize_v anew_o to_o this_o he_o answer_v that_o it_o be_v true_a because_o false_a brethren_n be_v brethren_n though_o false_a and_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v true_a and_o make_v such_o a_o show_n by_o manifestation_n of_o themselves_o and_o therefore_o according_a to_o we_o be_v to_o be_v judge_v true_a and_o therefore_o to_o be_v baptize_v though_o they_o be_v false_a yet_o their_o baptism_n be_v true_a baptism_n but_o to_o administer_v it_o to_o one_o no_o brother_n nor_o give_v any_o manifestation_n of_o such_o a_o estate_n that_o be_v not_o command_v of_o god_n and_o so_o a_o humane_a devise_n to_o baptize_v such_o a_o one_o i_o grant_v this_o last_o but_o if_o he_o mean_v infant_n be_v no_o brethren_n nor_o can_v give_v any_o manifestation_n thereof_o and_o therefore_o god_n have_v not_o command_v they_o to_o be_v baptize_v and_o therefore_o to_o baptize_v they_o be_v a_o humane_a invention_n i_o dissent_v whole_o and_o in_o a_o word_n reply_n child_n be_v brethren_n for_o if_o god_n be_v their_o father_n as_o will_v as_o to_o man_n of_o year_n than_o they_o be_v year_n be_v not_o baptize_v without_o manifestation_n of_o their_o faith_n for_o the_o difference_n only_o be_v circumstantial_a viz._n the_o manifestation_n of_o their_o faith_n in_o christ_n the_o messiah_n now_o come_v which_o before_o they_o believe_v shall_v come_v nor_o will_v he_o ever_o prove_v that_o the_o infant_n of_o those_o jew_n believe_a and_o baptize_v be_v not_o also_o baptize_v with_o their_o parent_n and_o this_o of_o his_o consideration_n to_o my_o second_o reason_n my_o three_o reason_n follow_v the_o stand_n of_o the_o jew_n and_o of_o we_o gentile_n in_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v the_o same_o with_o abraham_n therefore_o the_o covenant_n be_v the_o same_o to_o this_o he_o answer_v first_o distinguish_v of_o the_o word_n grace_n which_o be_v take_v say_v he_o particular_o for_o the_o covenant_n of_o life_n general_o for_o any_o effect_n of_o god_n goodness_n whereby_o he_o free_o communicate_v any_o benefit_n unto_o the_o son_n of_o man_n which_o must_v needs_o be_v by_o grace_n see_v no_o man_n deserve_v any_o thing_n second_o he_o appli_v this_o distinction_n and_o say_v that_o if_o grace_n be_v take_v in_o the_o first_o sense_n and_o particular_o for_o the_o covenant_n of_o everlasting_a life_n unto_o free_a justification_n he_o deni_v that_o the_o jew_n be_v require_v to_o manifest_v their_o interest_n therein_o before_o they_o can_v be_v admit_v to_o stand_v member_n of_o the_o jewish_a visible_a church_n state_n as_o all_o both_o jew_n and_o gentile_n must_v now_o since_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o yet_o none_o save_v but_o by_o grace_n in_o this_o first_o sense_n but_o if_o grace_n be_v take_v in_o the_o latter_a and_o more_o general_a sense_n for_o some_o effect_n of_o god_n goodness_n communicate_v free_o to_o any_o in_o any_o kind_n of_o benefit_n than_o he_o grant_v that_o the_o jew_n stand_v under_o the_o same_o grace_n of_o god_n with_o abraham_n and_o have_v circumcision_n and_o other_o ordinance_n to_o lead_v they_o to_o christ_n to_o come_v yea_o to_o be_v bear_v of_o their_o seed_n according_a to_o the_o flesh_n and_o in_o these_o respect_v the_o jew_n stand_n be_v the_o same_o with_o abraham_n and_o these_o respect_n be_v speak_v of_o by_o mary_n luke_n 1.54_o 55._o and_o zachary_n luke_n 1.72_o 73_o rep._n first_o the_o distinction_n be_v not_o necessary_a for_o though_o in_o a_o general_a sense_n any_o thing_n from_o god_n may_v be_v call_v a_o grace_n as_o it_o be_v a_o free_a gift_n of_o god_n to_o they_o they_o that_o never_o deserve_v it_o yet_o in_o this_o discourse_n and_o usual_o in_o the_o scripture_n it_o be_v not_o use_v in_o this_o large_a sense_n second_o to_o make_v those_o privilege_n of_o the_o jew_n to_o be_v but_o effect_n of_o common_a grace_n he_o wrong_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n as_o dispense_n nothing_o more_o of_o particular_a favour_n to_o the_o jew_n then_o to_o the_o gentile_n though_o they_o have_v more_o and_o large_a matter_n than_o the_o gentile_n yet_o be_v from_o common_a grace_n it_o alter_v not_o the_o state_n of_o they_o under_o god_n grace_n from_o the_o heathen_n who_o in_o this_o case_n god_n leave_v not_o without_o witness_n of_o himself_o three_o in_o that_o he_o say_v the_o jew_n have_v circumcision_n and_o other_o ordinance_n lead_v they_o to_o christ_n and_o
so_o absolute_o last_o of_o all_o to_o this_o consectary_n which_o i_o add_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o then_o in_o the_o state_n of_o person_n to_o interest_n infant_n in_o the_o covenant_n more_o than_o now_o he_o give_v this_o answer_n though_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o state_n of_o person_n yet_o there_o be_v something_o in_o thing_n and_o order_n of_o time_n christ_n be_v yet_o to_o come_v and_o here_o he_o conclude_v two_o thing_n first_o that_o the_o whole_a fleshly_a seed_n of_o abraham_n separate_v by_o ceremonial_a holiness_n be_v a_o type_n of_o christ_n to_o come_v and_o therefore_o infant_n then_o in_o the_o covenant_n and_o but_o ceremonial_o holy_a second_o that_o christ_n the_o thing_n typify_v be_v come_v all_o that_o typical_a state_n be_v utter_o abolish_v etc._n etc._n infant_n now_o not_o to_o be_v in_o it_o reply_n first_o i_o deny_v that_o the_o fleshly_a seed_n of_o abraham_n be_v a_o type_n of_o christ_n and_o have_v speak_v to_o it_o before_o and_o do_v conceive_v it_o a_o very_a erroneous_a conceit_n and_o full_a of_o absurdity_n second_o we_o must_v then_o exclude_v grow_v man_n also_o upon_o the_o same_o ground_n from_o the_o covenant_n church_n estate_n visible_o that_o be_v the_o form_n of_o that_o church_n but_o without_o the_o renewall_n of_o their_o covenant_n they_o can_v not_o stand_v in_o a_o right_n or_o pure_a church_n estate_n but_o without_o renewall_n of_o circumcision_n they_o may_v ergo._n his_o answer_n hereto_o be_v first_o he_o grant_v they_o make_v a_o covenant_n and_o do_v well_o in_o so_o do_v but_o second_o that_o they_o can_v not_o be_v in_o a_o church_n estate_n without_o so_o do_v nor_o have_v i_o prove_v it_o and_o he_o will_v prove_v the_o contrary_a first_o because_o they_o be_v a_o church_n before_o second_o this_o covenant_n be_v but_o a_o animate_v they_o to_o do_v that_o which_o they_o be_v engage_v to_o do_v before_o by_o their_o circumcision_n gal._n 5.3_o ergo._n as_o the_o renewall_n of_o their_o covenant_n be_v not_o by_o i_o prove_v to_o be_v the_o form_n of_o the_o church_n then_o much_o less_o have_v it_o any_o consequence_n to_o
