it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o reprobate_n be_v sometime_o drown_v of_o satan_n in_o such_o a_o lake_n of_o feel_v that_o they_o feel_v not_o their_o evil_n at_o all_o and_o without_o all_o grief_n or_o fear_n as_o paul_n say_v they_o run_v secure_o into_o their_o destruction_n eph._n 4.19_o and_o it_o be_v certain_a also_o that_o hypocrite_n be_v wont_a to_o flatter_v themselves_o and_o proud_o to_o contemn_v the_o judgement_n of_o god_n because_o that_o be_v drunken_a with_o a_o false_a opinion_n of_o righteousness_n they_o be_v not_o touch_v with_o their_o sin_n the_o answer_n be_v easy_a that_o hypocrite_n be_v deceive_v because_o they_o shun_v the_o light_n and_o that_o the_o reprobate_n feel_v nothing_o because_o they_o go_v away_o from_o god_n yea_o there_o be_v no_o security_n to_o a_o evil_a conscience_n but_o in_o lurk_a corner_n but_o here_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o conscience_n which_o be_v bring_v out_o into_o light_n god_n bring_v to_o his_o tribunal_n seat_n and_o exercise_v with_o the_o feel_v of_o his_o judgement_n albeit_o yet_o this_o be_v also_o general_o true_a that_o we_o never_o have_v any_o sound_a peace_n except_o that_o which_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v give_v unto_o pure_a heart_n those_o who_o we_o have_v say_v to_o be_v astonish_v feel_v yet_o oftetinme_v blind_a pricking_n and_o be_v torment_v in_o their_o drowsiness_n 21_o if_o our_o heart_n accuse_v we_o not_o i_o have_v expound_v already_o that_o this_o do_v neither_o belong_v to_o hypocrisy_n nor_o to_o the_o gross_a contempt_n of_o god_n for_o howsoever_o the_o way_n shut_v up_o against_o hypocrite_n lest_o they_o shall_v rush_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n with_o his_o contempt_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n he_o do_v not_o intend_v that_o a_o good_a and_o therefore_o set_v forth_o to_o all_o sleyghte_n and_o satan_n be_v exceed_a cunning_n to_o deceive_v if_o we_o endure_v for_o one_o day_n yet_o a_o doubtfulness_n créepe_v upon_o our_o mind_n what_o shall_v come_v to_o pass_v to_o morrow_n and_o so_o we_o be_v always_o doubtful_a the_o apostle_n therefore_o show_v that_o we_o be_v strong_a not_o in_o our_o own_o strength_n but_o in_o the_o but_o because_o that_o when_o we_o do_v nothing_o god_n confound_v the_o enemy_n the_o victory_n be_v most_o certain_a 5_o they_o be_v of_o the_o world_n this_o be_v no_o small_a comfort_n that_o they_o which_o dare_v encounter_v with_o god_n in_o we_o be_v only_o strengthen_v with_o worldly_a help_n further_o the_o apostle_n understand_v the_o world_n as_o satan_n be_v the_o prince_n of_o it_o together_o be_v add_v another_o comfort_n when_o he_o say_v that_o the_o world_n embrace_v in_o false_a prophet_n that_o which_o it_o do_v acknowledge_v for_o their_o own_o we_o see_v how_o great_a the_o readiness_n of_o man_n be_v to_o vanity_n therefore_o false_a doctrine_n easy_o enter_v by_o and_o by_o and_o spread_v far_o and_o wide_o the_o apostle_n deny_v that_o there_o be_v cause_n why_o we_o shall_v therefore_o be_v trouble_v because_o there_o be_v nothing_o new_a or_o unwonted_a if_o the_o world_n which_o be_v whole_a a_o liar_n do_v willing_o hear_v a_o lie_n 6_o we_o to_o error_n hence_o come_v the_o occasion_n of_o offence_n which_o that_o john_n may_v meet_v withal_o he_o bid_v we_o be_v content_v with_o the_o fewness_n of_o the_o faithful_a because_o all_o the_o child_n of_o god_n do_v give_v honour_n to_o he_o and_o submit_v themselves_o to_o his_o doctrine_n for_o the_o contrary_a member_n he_o oppose_v immediate_o after_o that_o they_o which_o be_v testimony_n of_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n to_o reverence_v his_o word_n and_o the_o excuse_n which_o many_o use_n to_o pretend_v have_v here_o no_o place_n that_o they_o therefore_o fly_v from_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n when_o it_o be_v set_v forth_o unto_o they_o because_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o judge_v for_o it_o can_v be_v but_o the_o he_o know_v god_n in_o his_o word_n hearer_n in_o the_o faith_n to_o set_v forth_o as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v the_o grace_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v content_a therewith_o we_o desire_v nothing_o else_o see_v the_o papist_n do_v hide_v and_o abase_v this_o by_o all_o mean_n they_o do_v bewray_v by_o this_o one_o thing_n sufficient_o that_o they_o have_v care_n of_o nothing_o less_o then_o of_o the_o right_a doctrine_n of_o faith_n yea_o for_o this_o cause_n their_o school_n be_v more_o to_o be_v avoid_v than_o all_o rock_n or_o quicksand_n because_o a_o man_n can_v scarce_o enter_v into_o they_o without_o undoubted_a shipwreck_n of_o faith_n moreover_o the_o apostle_n teach_v in_o this_o place_n that_o christ_n be_v the_o proper_a scope_n of_o faith_n and_o that_o the_o assurance_n of_o salvation_n be_v join_v with_o the_o faith_n which_o we_o have_v in_o his_o name_n for_o this_o be_v the_o end_n of_o beléeve_v that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o child_n and_o heir_n of_o god_n 14_o this_o be_v the_o trust_n he_o commend_v the_o faith_n whereof_o he_o speak_v by_o the_o fruit_n or_o he_o do_v show_v wherein_o our_o trust_n do_v chief_o consist_v to_o wit_n that_o the_o godly_a be_v bold_a to_o call_v upon_o god_n with_o a_o bold_a courage_n as_o paul_n also_o speak_v ephe._n 3.12_o that_o by_o faith_n we_o have_v access_n unto_o god_n with_o boldness_n and_o rom._n 8.15_o that_o the_o spirit_n do_v open_v our_o mouth_n that_o we_o doubt_v not_o to_o cry_v abba_n father_n and_o true_o if_o we_o be_v keep_v from_o come_v to_o god_n nothing_o be_v more_o miserable_a than_o we_o again_o so_o this_o sanctuary_n may_v be_v open_v for_o we_o we_o shall_v be_v nevertheless_o bless_v in_o all_o our_o misery_n yea_o this_o one_o thing_n make_v all_o our_o misery_n happy_a that_o we_o be_v certainlye_o persuade_v that_o god_n will_v be_v our_o deliverer_n and_o trust_v in_o his_o fatherly_a good_a will_n towards_o we_o we_o fly_v unto_o he_o let_v we_o therefore_o hold_v this_o sentence_n of_o the_o apostle_n that_o call_v upon_o god_n be_v the_o especial_a trial_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o that_o god_n be_v not_o call_v upon_o a_o right_n neither_o according_a unto_o faith_n but_o when_o as_o we_o be_v persuade_v that_o our_o prayer_n shall_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a for_o the_o apostle_n do_v deny_v that_o they_o be_v endue_v with_o confidence_n which_o hang_v in_o doubt_n whereby_o it_o appear_v that_o the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n be_v bury_v and_o almost_o quench_v in_o the_o papacy_n where_o all_o certainty_n be_v take_v away_o indeed_o they_o murmur_v many_o prayer_n there_o and_o they_o prate_v much_o of_o call_v upon_o god_n but_o they_o pray_v &_o bid_v to_o pray_v with_o doubtful_a and_o wander_a mind_n yea_o they_o condemn_v this_o trust_n which_o the_o apostle_n do_v necessary_o require_v according_a to_o his_o will_n by_o this_o note_n he_o will_v brief_o teach_v what_o be_v the_o true_a rule_n to_o pray_v to_o wit_n when_o man_n submit_v their_o prayer_n unto_o god_n neither_o indeed_o when_o as_o the_o lord_n do_v promise_v that_o he_o will_v do_v whatsoever_o his_o shall_v require_v do_v he_o grant_v unto_o they_o a_o unbridled_a liberty_n to_o ask_v whatsoever_o come_v into_o their_o mind_n but_o he_o give_v they_o withal_o a_o law_n to_o pray_v aright_o and_o true_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o profitable_a for_o we_o than_o this_o bridle_n because_o if_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o every_o one_o of_o we_o to_o ask_v whatsoever_o he_o listen_v and_o god_n do_v favour_v our_o prayer_n we_o shall_v be_v very_o ill_o provide_v for_o for_o we_o know_v not_o what_o be_v profitable_a yea_o we_o do_v boil_v with_o wicked_a and_o hurtful_a desire_n but_o god_n do_v give_v a_o double_a remedy_n that_o we_o pray_v not_o otherwise_o then_o according_a to_o the_o precise_a rule_n of_o his_o will_n because_o he_o do_v both_o teach_v we_o by_o his_o word_n what_o he_o will_v have_v we_o to_o ask_v and_o also_o he_o do_v appoint_v his_o spirit_n our_o guide_n and_o governor_n which_o may_v stay_v our_o affection_n and_o not_o suffer_v they_o to_o wander_v without_o their_o bound_n for_o we_o know_v not_o say_v paul_n what_o and_o how_o we_o ought_v to_o pray_v but_o the_o spirit_n help_v our_o infirmity_n do_v stir_v up_o in_o we_o unspeakable_a sigh_n rom._n 8.26_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n also_o we_o must_v ask_v at_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o will_v direct_v our_o prayer_n for_o god_n in_o his_o promise_n do_v set_v down_o unto_o we_o the_o lawful_a mean_n to_o pray_v as_o have_v be_v say_v 15_o and_o if_o we_o know_v the_o repetition_n be_v not_o needless_a as_o in_o show_v it_o seem_v for_o the_o apostle_n now_o special_o affirm_v that_o which_o he_o general_o pronounce_v of_o the_o success_n of_o prayer_n that_o the_o godly_a do_v wish_v or_o desire_v nothing_o of_o god_n which_o they_o do_v not_o obtain_v and_o when_o as_o he_o say_v that_o all_o the_o prayer_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v hear_v he_o speak_v of_o sound_n and_o modest_a prayer_n and_o which_o be_v frame_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o obedience_n for_o the_o faithful_a do_v not_o run_v headlong_o with_o loose_a reins_n or_o grant_v themselves_o any_o thing_n but_o they_o always_o in_o their_o prayer_n regard_v what_o god_n command_v therefore_o this_o be_v the_o apply_v of_o the_o general_a doctrine_n to_o the_o spiritual_a and_o private_a use_n of_o every_o man_n that_o the_o faithful_a do_v not_o doubt_v that_o they_o have_v god_n favourable_a in_o all_o and_o every_o their_o prayer_n that_o they_o may_v with_o quiet_a mind_n wait_v until_o the_o lord_n perform_v those_o thing_n which_o they_o have_v pray_v for_o and_o so_o be_v ease_v of_o all_o grief_n and_o care_n they_o cast_v their_o care_n upon_o god_n neither_o yet_o this_o quietness_n and_o assurance_n aught_o to_o quench_v in_o we_o the_o zeal_n of_o prayer_n that_o he_o which_o be_v assure_v of_o a_o happy_a success_n shall_v therefore_o abstain_v from_o call_v upon_o god_n for_o the_o certainty_n of_o faith_n do_v not_o bring_v forth_o untowardness_n or_o slackness_n but_o the_o apostle_n only_o mean_v that_o everye_o man_n be_v quiet_a mind_v in_o his_o necessity_n when_o he_o have_v lay_v down_o his_o groan_n in_o the_o bosom_n of_o god_n 16_o if_o any_o man_n shall_v see_v his_o brother_n sin_n a_o sin_n not_o unto_o death_n let_v he_o ask_v and_o he_o shall_v give_v he_o life_n i_o say_v to_o he_o that_o sin_v not_o unto_o death_n there_o be_v a_o sin_n unto_o death_n for_o that_o i_o say_v not_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v pray_v 17_o every_o unrighteousness_n be_v sin_n and_o there_o be_v a_o sin_n not_o unto_o death_n 18_o we_o know_v that_o whosoever_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n sin_v not_o he_o speak_v be_v a_o heap_n of_o unrighteousness_n yet_o i_o do_v more_o willing_o allow_v of_o the_o first_o or_o second_o exposition_n and_o because_o they_o fall_v both_o to_o one_o end_n i_o leave_v the_o judgement_n free_a to_o the_o reader_n which_o of_o they_o be_v more_o fit_a 18_o we_o know_v that_o whosoever_o be_v of_o god_n if_o thou_o take_v the_o child_n of_o god_n to_o be_v altogether_o clean_a and_o free_a from_o sin_n as_o fantastical_a man_n do_v fain_o the_o apostle_n shall_v be_v contrary_a to_o himself_o for_o by_o this_o mean_n he_o shall_v take_v away_o from_o among_o brother_n the_o endeavour_n of_o pray_v therefore_o he_o say_v they_o do_v not_o sin_n which_o fall_v not_o utter_o away_o from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o hence_o he_o will_v infer_v that_o we_o must_v pray_v for_o all_o the_o child_n of_o god_n because_o they_o sin_v not_o unto_o death_n the_o proof_n be_v add_v because_o every_o one_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n keep_v himself_o that_o be_v do_v keep_v himself_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n &_o suffer_v not_o himself_o so_o to_o be_v with_o violence_n carry_v away_o that_o the_o sense_n of_o godliness_n be_v extinguish_v he_o whole_o give_v himself_o to_o the_o devil_n and_o to_o the_o flesh_n for_o when_o he_o say_v that_o he_o be_v not_o touch_v of_o that_o wicked_a one_o it_o be_v to_o be_v refer_v to_o the_o deadly_a wound_n for_o the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v not_o free_a from_o the_o wound_n of_o satan_n but_o they_o so_o beat_v back_o his_o stroke_n with_o the_o shield_n of_o faith_n that_o they_o pierce_v not_o to_o the_o very_a heart_n therefore_o the_o spiritual_a life_n be_v never_o extinguish_v in_o they_o this_o be_v that_o not_o to_o sin_n when_o the_o godly_a do_v indeed_o fall_v through_o the_o infirmity_n of_o the_o flesh_n but_o they_o mourn_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n they_o be_v displease_v with_o themselves_o they_o cease_v not_o to_o fear_v god_n keep_v himself_o that_o which_o be_v proper_a to_o god_n he_o appli_v unto_o us._n for_o it_o every_o of_o we_o be_v the_o keeper_n of_o his_o own_o salvation_n it_o will_v be_v a_o miserable_a defence_n therefore_o christ_n pray_v his_o father_n that_o he_o will_v keep_v us._n john_n 17.11_o signify_v that_o this_o be_v not_o in_o our_o power_n the_o defender_n of_o free_a will_v snatch_v up_o this_o speech_n that_o they_o may_v thereby_o prove_v that_o we_o be_v deliver_v from_o sin_n partly_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o partly_o by_o our_o own_o power_n but_o they_o do_v not_o observe_v that_o the_o faithful_a have_v not_o of_o themselves_o the_o keep_v whereof_o the_o apostle_n speak_v nor_o indeed_o do_v he_o here_o publish_v their_o strength_n as_o if_o they_o do_v keep_v themselves_o by_o their_o own_o power_n but_o only_o he_o teach_v that_o they_o resist_v satan_n that_o they_o be_v never_o deadly_a wound_v with_o his_o dart_n and_o we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v never_o prepare_v to_o battle_n with_o any_o other_o armour_n than_o the_o armour_n of_o god_n let_v therefore_o the_o faithful_a keep_v themselves_o from_o sin_n even_o as_o they_o be_v keep_v of_o yourselves_o from_o idol_n amen_n 19_o we_o be_v of_o god_n by_o the_o former_a doctrine_n he_o take_v occasion_n to_o exhort_v for_o that_o which_o he_o have_v say_v in_o common_a of_o all_o the_o child_n of_o god_n he_o now_o appli_v to_o they_o unto_o who_o he_o write_v and_o that_o that_o he_o may_v prick_v they_o forward_o to_o avoid_v sin_n and_o encourage_v they_o to_o withstand_v the_o assault_n of_o satan_n let_v the_o reader_n note_n that_o this_o indeed_o be_v true_a faith_n which_o apply_v that_o i_o may_v speak_v so_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n unto_o us._n for_o the_o apostle_n do_v not_o acknowledge_v any_o other_o to_o be_v faithful_a except_o such_o as_o assemble_v themselves_o into_o the_o order_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n neither_o indeed_o do_v he_o allege_v a_o probable_a conjecture_n as_o the_o schoolman_n speak_v for_o trust_v for_o he_o say_v that_o we_o know_v the_o sum_n have_v this_o drift_n see_v we_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n that_o we_o must_v endeavour_n ourselves_o that_o be_v separate_v from_o the_o world_n we_o may_v prove_v by_o holiness_n of_o life_n that_o we_o be_v not_o in_o vain_a call_v to_o so_o great_a dignity_n and_o this_o admonition_n be_v very_o needful_a to_o all_o the_o godly_a for_o whether_o soever_o they_o turn_v their_o eye_n satan_n have_v ready_a enticement_n whereby_o he_o may_v draw_v they_o from_o god_n therefore_o it_o will_v be_v hard_a for_o they_o to_o hold_v a_o right_a course_n except_o their_o call_n be_v more_o of_o account_n with_o they_o than_o all_o worldly_a let_n therefore_o that_o we_o
