and_o say_v oh_o my_o highpriest_n and_o this_o my_o highpriest_n have_v satisfy_v for_o i_o oh_o what_o comfort_n be_v here_o to_o poor_a droop_a soul_n lift_v up_o your_o head_n o_o all_o you_o peter_n to_o ananias_n why_o have_v satan_n fill_v thy_o heart_n indeed_o there_o be_v three_o thing_n especial_o wherein_o he_o do_v fall_v short_a for_o though_o satan_n be_v able_a to_o discern_v what_o temptation_n will_v take_v best_a with_o a_o man_n yet_o he_o do_v know_v man_n thought_n for_o god_n only_o be_v the_o knower_n of_o one_o thought_n that_o be_v god_n prerogative_n and_o though_o satan_n may_v work_v very_o effectual_o in_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o do_v not_o work_v with_o a_o almighty_a power_n when_o the_o lord_n convert_v a_o man_n he_o put_v forth_o a_o almighty_a power_n in_o man_n conversion_n the_o same_o power_n say_v the_o apostle_n that_o raise_v up_o christ_n from_o the_o dead_a make_v you_o to_o believe_v the_o devil_n be_v magnipotent_a say_v luther_n but_o not_o omnipotent_a the_o devil_n may_v be_v very_o powerful_a but_o he_o be_v not_o almighty_a neither_o do_v he_o put_v forht_v a_o almighty_a power_n in_o his_o temptation_n as_o god_n do_v in_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n and_o though_o he_o may_v suggest_v and_o provoke_v unto_o what_o be_v evil_a he_o can_v force_v or_o determine_v any_o man_n to_o evil_n and_o therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n peter_n why_o have_v satan_n fill_v thy_o bear_v it_o he_o ask_v ananias_n that_o question_n because_o satan_n though_o he_o do_v fill_v his_o heart_n he_o can_v not_o have_v force_v or_o determine_v he_o without_o his_o own_o will_n thereunto_o but_o very_o powerful_a satan_n be_v in_o the_o 6._o chapter_n to_o the_o ephesian_n you_o you_o will_v say_v there_o be_v a_o great_a strength_n but_o behold_v more_o than_o that_o here_o be_v something_o more_o than_o flesh_n and_o blood_n that_o every_o man_n do_v wrestle_v against_o for_o we_o wrestle_v not_o against_o flesh_n and_o blood_n all_o mankind_n be_v but_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o so_o there_o be_v a_o weakness_n but_o we_o wrestle_v not_o against_o flesh_n and_o blood_n but_o against_o principality_n for_o authority_n and_o against_o power_n for_o strength_n and_o against_o the_o ruler_n of_o the_o darkness_n of_o this_o world_n and_o against_o spiritual_a wickedness_n in_o high_a place_n oh_o what_o a_o mighty_a power_n than_o have_v satan_n to_o infest_v molest_v and_o to_o tempt_v the_o child_n of_o man_n whether_o do_v satan_n put_v forth_o this_o power_n quest_n 2_o and_o exercise_v this_o his_o tempt_a power_n upon_o the_o saint_n and_o child_n of_o god_n yes_o answ_n for_o they_o be_v the_o saint_n that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o here_o in_o that_o to_o the_o ephesian_n for_o we_o wresile_v not_o against_o flesh_n and_o blood_n you_o that_o be_v ephesian_n and_o you_o that_o be_v saint_n we_o wrestle_v not_o against_o flesh_n and_o blood_n but_o against_o principality_n and_o power_n proper_o you_o do_v wrestle_v with_o a_o man_n that_o be_v down_o you_o wrestle_v with_o a_o man_n for_o to_o throw_v he_o down_o but_o he_o must_v satan_n for_o they_o stand_v the_o other_o be_v fall_v already_o yea_o the_o saint_n be_v not_o only_o tempt_v by_o satan_n but_o the_o best_a and_o the_o most_o belove_a disciple_n of_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n who_o more_o belove_a than_o david_n and_o job_n yet_o they_o tempt_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n who_o more_o belove_a than_o peter_n and_o paul_n one_o of_o the_o circumcision_n and_o the_o other_o of_o the_o uncircumcision_n and_o apostleship_n and_o yet_o both_o have_v special_a temptation_n yea_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o one_o of_o god_n own_o child_n to_o be_v so_o far_o oppress_v with_o satan_n that_o he_o may_v even_o be_v weary_a of_o his_o life_n in_o the_o 10._o of_o job_n and_o the_o 1._o verse_n say_v job_n under_o his_o great_a temptation_n my_o soul_n be_v weary_a of_o my_o life_n and_o if_o rebekah_n be_v weary_a of_o her_o life_n because_o of_o the_o child_n of_o heth_n much_o more_o may_v a_o poor_a gracious_a soul_n to_o lead_v they_o captive_a at_o his_o will_n but_o if_o you_o look_v into_o the_o new_a testament_n you_o will_v not_o ordinary_o find_v that_o wicked_a man_n be_v say_v to_o be_v tempt_v by_o satan_n a_o man_n do_v not_o tempt_v his_o wife_n but_o when_o he_o solicit_v another_o woman_n than_o he_o be_v say_v for_o to_o tempt_v that_o woman_n as_o the_o sain_n be_v marry_v to_o christ_n so_o wicked_a man_n they_o be_v match_v to_o satan_n and_o he_o be_v not_o in_o propriety_n of_o phrase_n say_v for_o to_o tempt_v they_o your_o man_n stealer_n those_o that_o steal_v child_n they_o do_v tempt_v their_o own_o child_n for_o to_o go_v with_o they_o they_o natural_o go_v with_o their_o father_n but_o they_o come_v and_o tempt_v your_o child_n they_o be_v other_o folk_n child_n to_o dwell_v with_o he_o and_o to_o converse_v with_o he_o it_o be_v not_o i_o say_v in_o propriety_n of_o speech_n a_o proper_a temptation_n but_o for_o the_o servant_n of_o christ_n when_o he_o the_o act_n and_o yet_o remain_v wicked_a so_o there_o be_v no_o sin_n which_o a_o wicked_a man_n fall_v into_o but_o a_o godly_a man_n may_v be_v tempt_v to_o it_o and_o yet_o remain_v godly_a but_o great_a sin_n but_o satan_n have_v a_o special_a hand_n therein_o i_o be_o not_o of_o origen_n mind_n to_o lay_v all_o sin_n upon_o satan_n not_o upon_o man_n but_o i_o say_v there_o be_v no_o great_a take_v you_o but_o such_o as_o be_v common_a to_o man_n but_o god_n be_v faithful_a who_o will_v not_o suffer_v you_o to_o be_v tempt_v above_o that_o which_o you_o be_v able_a but_o will_v with_o the_o temptation_n also_o make_v a_o way_n to_o escape_v wherefore_o at_o the_o 14._o verse_n my_o dear_o belove_a fly_v from_o idolatry_n as_o if_o that_o be_v temptation_n too_o and_o so_o in_o hinder_v that_o work_n which_o be_v the_o work_n of_o god_n in_o a_o special_a manner_n and_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o god_n that_o you_o believe_v in_o his_o son_n satan_n know_v that_o faith_n be_v the_o most_o beneficial_a grace_n unto_o the_o saint_n the_o shield_n of_o faith_n it_o be_v call_v and_o the_o anchor_n of_o faith_n if_o you_o be_v in_o a_o storm_n at_o sea_n faith_n be_v your_o anchor_n if_o you_o be_v in_o danger_n at_o land_n before_o enemy_n faith_n be_v your_o shield_n if_o that_o a_o man_n faith_n fail_v his_o duty_n fail_v his_o heart_n fail_v and_o all_o fail_v he_o know_v well_o enough_o that_o he_o shall_v soon_o make_v we_o suffer_v shipwreck_n if_o he_o can_v but_o weaken_v faith_n and_o therefore_o his_o great_a design_n be_v upon_o our_o faith_n he_o know_v that_o faith_n be_v most_o prejudicial_a to_o himself_o for_o by_o faith_n we_o overcome_v the_o world_n who_o resist_v steadfast_a in_o the_o faith_n and_o by_o faith_n we_o quench_v the_o fiery_a dart_n of_o the_o devil_n now_o then_o say_v satan_n do_v faith_n quench_v my_o fiery_a dart_n then_o will_v i_o labour_v to_o quench_v faith_n if_o i_o can_v the_o devil_n do_v labour_n always_o to_o present_v himself_o in_o christ_n clothes_n unto_o a_o soul_n as_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n and_o he_o do_v labout_o to_o rpesent_a christ_n in_o his_o own_o clothes_n as_o a_o angel_n of_o darkness_n when_o as_o he_o be_v a_o liar_n himself_o he_o do_v labour_n to_o make_v the_o soul_n put_v the_o lie_n upon_o christ_n and_o upon_o the_o spirit_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o come_v and_o testify_v unto_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n thou_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n satan_n say_v no._n when_o a_o man_n therefore_o do_v say_v he_o be_v not_o the_o child_n of_o god_n the_o language_n of_o his_o action_n be_v he_o gives_z the_o lie_n unto_o the_o spirit_n and_o he_o say_v that_o satan_n speak_v true_a so_o here_o he_o make_v christ_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o chrhist_a a_o liar_n by_o his_o unbelief_n &_o he_o make_v the_o devil_n to_o speak_v true_a now_o this_o be_v satan_n great_a design_n and_o therefore_o in_o all_o his_o temptation_n still_o he_o strike_v at_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o saint_n labour_n to_o weaken_v their_o faith_n his_o great_a design_n be_v upon_o their_o faith_n in_o the_o four_o place_n quest_n 4_o how_o do_v satan_n weaken_v our_o faith_n in_o time_n of_o temptation_n what_o be_v those_o stroke_n that_o satan_n give_v unto_o our_o faith_n and_o how_o shall_v we_o be_v able_a to_o bare_v they_o off_o in_o the_o general_a answ_n satan_n do_v sometime_o labour_v to_o weaken_v our_o faith_n by_o draw_v we_o from_o the_o mean_n of_o faith_n take_v the_o wood_n away_o from_o the_o fire_n it_o will_v soon_o lose_v its_o heat_n if_o not_o put_v out_o and_o if_o a_o man_n be_v but_o draw_v away_o from_o the_o mean_n of_o faith_n the_o mean_v draw_v from_o he_o or_o he_o from_o the_o mean_n by_o his_o own_o default_n his_o faith_n will_v be_v soon_o weaken_v this_o satan_n labour_v to_o do_v sometime_o sometime_o again_o he_o raise_v up_o mountain_n of_o difficulty_n and_o discouragement_n in_o the_o way_n of_o a_o christian_n obedience_n and_o so_o labour_v to_o wound_v his_o faith_n throw_v water_n upon_o the_o fire_n it_o will_v soon_o be_v out_o but_o that_o i_o may_v speak_v the_o more_o full_o unto_o this_o great_a question_n the_o answer_n whereof_o be_v of_o concernment_n every_o day_n among_o you_o you_o know_v there_o the_o three_o act_n of_o faith_n there_o be_v the_o faith_n of_o reliance_n whereby_o a_o soul_n do_v rely_v upon_o god_n in_o christ_n there_o be_v the_o faith_n of_o assurance_n whereby_o a_o man_n be_v persuade_v of_o god_n love_n towards_o he_o and_o his_o love_n to_o god_n and_o that_o he_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o there_o be_v the_o faith_n of_o acknowledgement_n whereby_o a_o man_n do_v own_o and_o acknowledge_v the_o cause_n and_o truth_n of_o christ_n i_o shall_v now_o spend_v some_o time_n and_o show_v you_o how_o satan_n strike_v at_o all_o these_o faith_n and_o withal_o labour_v to_o show_v you_o how_o we_o may_v bare_v off_o his_o blow_n that_o so_o we_o may_v stand_v in_o the_o time_n of_o temptation_n and_o our_o faith_n may_v not_o fail_v first_o for_o the_o faith_n of_o reliance_n satan_n do_v sometime_o strike_v at_o the_o faith_n of_o reliance_n in_o the_o saint_n by_o hide_v from_o they_o their_o former_a experience_n of_o god_n gracious_a deal_n with_o they_o so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n have_v the_o sight_n and_o view_v of_o his_o experience_n of_o god_n gracious_a deal_n with_o he_o before_o he_o do_v rely_v on_o god_n and_o he_o say_v i_o will_v for_o ever_o rest_n upon_o god_n and_o rely_v upon_o god_n in_o christ_n for_o thus_o and_o thus_o he_o have_v deal_v with_o the_o i_o heretofore_o now_o therefore_o satan_n do_v labour_n in_o the_o time_n of_o temptation_n to_o hide_v the_o experience_n of_o the_o saint_n from_o they_o and_o so_o do_v strike_v at_o their_o faith_n and_o labour_n to_o make_v their_o faith_n fail_v but_o then_o how_o shall_v we_o bear_v off_o this_o blow_n quest_n thus_o promise_n by_o his_o experience_n and_o if_o you_o look_v into_o the_o 106._o psalm_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o when_o a_o man_n do_v rest_n upon_o the_o promise_n bare_o by_o reason_n of_o his_o experience_n his_o faith_n will_v soon_o fail_v the_o water_n cover_v their_o enemy_n at_o the_o 11._o verse_n it_o be_v speak_v of_o the_o israelite_n when_o they_o come_v through_o the_o red_a sea_n experience_n for_o if_o your_o experience_n be_v but_o out_o of_o the_o way_n a_o little_a than_o your_o heart_n will_v fail_v and_o your_o faith_n fail_v present_o take_v heed_n that_o you_o never_o mourn_v for_o any_o evil_n answ_n 2_o no_o not_o for_o sin_n itself_o so_o as_o to_o be_v unthankful_a for_o or_o unmindful_a of_o former_a mercy_n we_o be_v very_o apt_a to_o this_o and_o satan_n he_o come_v and_o tempt_v and_o say_v unto_o a_o poor_a soul_n be_v you_o speak_v of_o former_a mercy_n or_o blessing_n to_o be_v thanful_a for_o they_o that_o be_v a_o good_a work_n for_o other_o but_o as_o for_o you_o you_o have_v commit_v such_o a_o sin_n and_o it_o be_v your_o duty_n now_o to_o mourn_v for_o your_o sin_n commit_v look_v you_o to_o that_o to_o be_v humble_v apply_v yourself_o to_o that_o work_n and_o so_o when_o he_o have_v get_v a_o man_n heart_n fix_v upon_o that_o work_n in_o opposition_n to_o thankfulness_n for_o former_a mercy_n receive_v the_o soul_n lose_v the_o sight_n of_o his_o experience_n and_o so_o his_o faith_n fail_v in_o the_o time_n of_o temptation_n
