content_n of_o this_o book_n the_o same_o be_v a_o excellent_a man._n look_v how_o pleasant_a &_o joyful_a the_o sun_n &_o light_n be_v so_o pleasant_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o see_v a_o man_n many_o year_n enure_v with_o the_o experience_n of_o these_o matter_n &_o yet_o merry_a at_o his_o heart_n and_o contain_v all_o worldy_a danger_n he_o shall_v see_v in_o deed_n much_o darkness_n that_o be_v misery_n of_o this_o world_n but_o this_o shall_v delight_v he_o that_o he_o can_v set_v they_o light_a as_o one_o know_v and_o perceive_v long_o before_o that_o this_o be_v the_o state_n and_o trade_n of_o the_o world_n the_o twelve_o chapter_n be_v merry_a therefore_o oh_o young_a man_n in_o thine_o youth_n and_o let_v thine_o heart_n be_v glad_a in_o thine_o young_a day_n after_o will_v live_v meare_o harken_v what_o i_o write_v for_o the_o and_o teach_v thou_o that_o thou_o pass_v not_o thy_o bound_n live_v so_o as_o thou_o may_v contemn_v the_o world_n and_o overcome_v the_o naughtiness_n thereof_o and_o here_o may_v thou_o see_v what_o solomon_n call_v contempt_n of_o the_o world_n not_o to_o forsake_v ourselves_o or_o other_o man_n but_o to_o be_v conversant_a in_o the_o world_n in_o the_o middle_a of_o the_o broil_n thereof_o but_o so_o as_o we_o must_v keep_v a_o quiet_a and_o peaceable_a heart_n in_o all_o manner_n of_o adversity_n this_o it_o be_v therefore_o that_o he_o say_v if_o thou_o will_v attain_v to_o this_o goal_n or_o mark_n to_o have_v a_o quiet_a heart_n in_o the_o middle_a of_o all_o trouble_n enure_v thyself_o with_o trouble_n &_o that_o from_o thy_o childhood_n for_o so_o shall_v thou_o safe_o stand_v all_o storm_n and_o danger_n let_v thy_o heart_n be_v glad_a up_o that_o be_v take_v prosperity_n meary_o when_o it_o come_v and_o be_v not_o overcome_v of_o adversity_n when_o god_n send_v it_o thus_o shall_v youth_n be_v bring_v up_o and_o instruct_v and_o unless_o youth_n follow_v such_o a_o admonisher_n he_o shall_v never_o do_v like_o a_o man_n for_o youth_n be_v lead_v altogether_o with_o affection_n &_o be_v unskilful_a which_o unskilfulness_n be_v cause_n that_o it_o can_v not_o bear_v nor_o yield_v hereafter_o to_o the_o naughtiness_n and_o ingratefulnes_n of_o the_o world_n solomon_n therefore_o be_v a_o excellent_a instructor_n of_o youth_n he_o forbid_v not_o joy_n and_o pleasantness_n as_o the_o foolish_a master_n the_o monk_n have_v do_v for_o this_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o of_o young_a man_n to_o make_v block_n and_o as_o anselme_n the_o very_a monk_n of_o all_o other_o say_v to_o set_v a_o great_a tree_n in_o a_o little_a pot_n thus_o these_o monk_n shut_v up_o their_o youth_n in_o a_o coupe_z and_o forbid_v they_o the_o sight_n and_o communication_n of_o man_n because_o they_o shall_v learn_v nor_o perceive_v nothing_o where_o as_o nothing_o be_v more_o dangerous_a for_o youth_n than_o solitariness_n the_o mind_n must_v be_v well_o inform_v with_o good_a understanding_n and_o opinion_n instruct_v that_o it_o be_v not_o corrupt_v with_o the_o company_n and_o familiarity_n of_o naughty_a man_n but_o the_o body_n must_v be_v conversant_a in_o every_o thing_n we_o must_v behold_v the_o world_n and_o hear_v it_o only_o see_v that_o we_o have_v a_o good_a master_n and_o teacher_n therefore_o we_o must_v beware_v that_o youth_n be_v not_o in_o sorrow_n and_o solitariness_n for_o mirth_n be_v as_o necessary_a for_o youth_n as_o meat_n and_o drink_v for_o the_o body_n do_v battle_n through_o mirth_n of_o mind_n and_o we_o must_v not_o begin_v with_o the_o education_n of_o the_o body_n but_o with_o the_o mind_n that_o it_o be_v not_o corrupt_v when_o the_o mind_n be_v well_o teach_v and_o enfourm_v there_o the_o body_n be_v soon_o well_o govern_v we_o must_v therefore_o bear_v with_o youth_n to_o be_v merry_a and_o to_o do_v all_o thing_n with_o gladsomeness_n of_o heart_n only_o we_o must_v take_v heed_n that_o they_o be_v not_o corrupt_v with_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o flesh_n for_o these_o quaffinge_n surfeit_v and_o amourousnes_n be_v not_o the_o mirth_n of_o the_o mind_n that_o solomon_n here_o speak_v of_o but_o rather_o the_o sorrow_n of_o the_o same_o walk_v in_o the_o way_n of_o thy_o heart_n lord._n this_o place_n cause_v i_o to_o think_v that_o all_o this_o chapter_n from_o the_o beginning_n be_v but_o a_o kind_n of_o derision_n and_o scorn_n because_o if_o a_o man_n walk_v after_o the_o way_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n it_o be_v common_o take_v in_o evil_a part_n but_o we_o must_v stick_v to_o the_o argument_n and_o consequence_n of_o the_o text_n this_o it_o be_v then_o that_o he_o say_v when_o thine_o heart_n be_v well_o teach_v and_o instruct_v no_o joy_n or_o mirth_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o hurt_v it_o so_o that_o it_o be_v lawful_a joy_n and_o no_o such_o naughty_a and_o woeful_a mirth_n as_o i_o speak_v of_o before_o and_o walk_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o thine_o eye_n that_o be_v to_o say_v enjoy_v that_o that_o come_v to_o thy_o sight_n vex_v not_o thyself_o about_o thing_n to_o come_v lest_o thou_o do_v as_o the_o monk_n do_v of_o who_o there_o be_v some_o namely_o syluanus_n the_o monk_n which_o teach_v man_n they_o shall_v not_o look_v upon_o the_o sun_n they_o will_v bereave_v youth_n of_o their_o sight_n of_o hear_v of_o taulk_a &_o all_o their_o sense_n and_o shut_v they_o up_o like_o capon_n into_o a_o coupe_z be_v in_o deed_n ungodly_a and_o the_o true_a misanthropi_n that_o be_v hater_n of_o man_n therefore_o if_o thou_o see_v or_o hear_v any_o pleasant_a matter_n enjoy_v it_o so_o thou_o offend_v not_o against_o god_n appoint_v or_o prescribe_v thyself_o no_o rule_n in_o this_o behalf_n but_o enjoy_v every_o thing_n in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n see_v thou_o follow_v not_o the_o perverse_a pleasure_n of_o the_o world_n which_o will_v corrupt_v thy_o mind_n thus_o far_o for_o one_o part_n put_v away_o grief_n out_o of_o thy_o heart_n and_o cause_v evil_a to_o depart_v from_o thy_o flesh_n for_o childhood_n and_o youth_n be_v vanity_n it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v voluptuousness_n even_o as_o i_o will_v have_v thou_o stay_v by_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n from_o follow_v filthy_a &_o noisome_a pleasure_n so_o will_v i_o keep_v thou_o from_o be_v overcome_v with_o sorrow_n and_o adversity_n put_v sorrow_n therefore_o out_o of_o thy_o mind_n that_o be_v use_v not_o to_o be_v angry_a nor_o to_o conceive_v indignation_n when_o thing_n go_v not_o as_o thou_o desire_v if_o any_o sad_a or_o sorrowful_a matter_n fall_v know_v that_o it_o be_v the_o state_n of_o this_o world_n let_v other_o envy_n hate_v and_o fret_v at_o it_o but_o do_v not_o thou_o for_o such_o do_n mar_v the_o pleasant_a life_n according_a to_o the_o proverb_n envy_n be_v the_o rot_v of_o the_o bone_n for_o envy_n be_v a_o fret_a and_o a_o consume_a sickness_n let_v thine_o heart_n always_o be_v one_o neither_o do_v thou_o corrupt_v it_o with_o overmuch_o worldly_a pleasure_n ne_o yet_o with_o too_o many_o worldly_a grief_n etc_n etc_n put_v away_o evil_a from_o thy_o flesh_n away_o that_o be_v whatsoever_o may_v vex_v or_o trouble_v thou_o put_v from_o thou_o not_o that_o he_o forbid_v man_n to_o chasten_v his_o flesh_n but_o in_o vain_a say_v he_o do_v thou_o vex_v thyself_o while_o thou_o let_v such_o thing_n trouble_v thou_o frown_v young_a and_o set_v all_o together_o in_o the_o way_n of_o vanity_n for_o youth_n of_o itself_o be_v a_o vain_a thing_n and_o lead_v with_o sundry_a and_o diverse_a passion_n be_v thou_o wise_a therefore_o
yea_o the_o wise_a the_o holy_a the_o more_o laborious_a a_o man_n be_v the_o less_o he_o prevail_v so_o that_o as_o well_o his_o wisdom_n as_o his_o righteousness_n and_o work_n be_v of_o no_o strength_n or_o force_n so_o that_o if_o neither_o these_o nor_o any_o other_o thing_n be_v of_o force_n then_o of_o necessity_n must_v all_o thing_n be_v vain_a and_o forceles_a but_o here_o in_o the_o beginning_n must_v we_o root_v out_o a_o error_n and_o noisome_a opinion_n that_o many_o man_n have_v namely_o creature_n that_o we_o think_v not_o solomon_n to_o speak_v of_o the_o contempt_n other_o for_o this_o be_v a_o great_a vanity_n and_o misery_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v defraud_v and_o byguyle_v himself_o of_o the_o use_n of_o such_o pleasure_n as_o be_v before_o he_o and_o vain_o to_o vex_v and_o disquiet_v himself_o about_o thing_n he_o have_v not_o these_o naughty_a affection_n i_o say_v and_o enterprise_n of_o man_n do_v solomon_n in_o this_o book_n condemn_v and_o not_o the_o creature_n themselves_o for_o touch_v the_o use_n of_o these_o creature_n he_o himself_o say_v hereafter_o there_o be_v nothing_o better_a than_o to_o be_v merry_a in_o this_o life_n and_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o man_n to_o reign_v in_o his_o labour_n etc_n etc_n where_o he_o shall_v be_v find_v utter_o against_o himself_o if_o he_o shall_v condemn_v the_o thing_n and_o not_o rather_o the_o abuse_n of_o they_o which_o be_v only_o in_o our_o affection_n book_n certain_a foolish_a man_n not_o perceive_v these_o thing_n have_v teach_v we_o absurd_a opinion_n about_o the_o contempt_n and_o forsake_v of_o the_o world_n and_o have_v themselves_o commit_v many_o absurd_a thing_n as_o we_o read_v in_o the_o life_n of_o the_o father_n that_o there_o be_v some_o which_o will_v not_o look_v upon_o the_o sun_n be_v worthy_a doubtless_o to_o have_v have_v their_o eye_n put_v out_o and_o live_v most_o filth_o and_o slovenly_a because_o they_o will_v seem_v religious_a which_o thing_n what_o we_o may_v judge_v of_o it_o appear_v plain_o by_o that_o be_v say_v before_o for_o it_o be_v but_o a_o sorry_a contemning_n of_o the_o world_n to_o live_v solitary_o and_o out_o of_o the_o company_n of_o man_n it_o be_v no_o contempt_n of_o gold_n to_o cast_v it_o away_o or_o to_o abstain_v from_o touch_v of_o money_n as_o do_v the_o franciscan_n but_o he_o in_o deed_n contemn_v it_o that_o use_v it_o every_o day_n be_v not_o carry_v away_o with_o the_o greedy_a desire_n of_o it_o this_o therefore_o be_v the_o principal_a thing_n that_o they_o shall_v consider_v which_o will_v read_v this_o book_n of_o solomon_n farthermore_o book_n this_o also_o be_v diligent_o to_o be_v observe_v that_o solomon_n in_o this_o book_n speak_v only_o of_o mankind_n and_o keep_v himself_o within_o the_o bond_n of_o man_n nature_n that_o be_v of_o man_n enterprise_n device_n desire_n and_o counsel_n lest_o perhaps_o we_o may_v imagine_v the_o same_o that_o the_o interpreter_n of_o as_o be_v this_o in_o the_o psalm_n he_o make_v thou_o young_a and_o lusty_a like_o a_o egle._n again_o like_a as_o the_o eagle_n that_o provoke_v her_o young_a one_o to_o fly_v again_o as_o the_o heart_n desire_v the_o water_n spring_v and_o soil_n and_o go_v sluggish_a body_n to_o the_o emmet_n and_o pismere_n yea_o the_o scripture_n be_v full_a of_o such_o metaphor_n and_o similitude_n borrow_v of_o nature_n so_o that_o he_o that_o shall_v take_v they_o out_o of_o the_o holy_a bible_n shall_v take_v therewith_o much_o light_v from_o it_o also_o be_v to_o be_v plain_a therefore_o the_o subject_n and_o matter_n of_o the_o book_n be_v that_o mankind_n be_v so_o foolish_a that_o he_o desire_v and_o search_v after_o his_o own_o way_n many_o thing_n which_o he_o can_v not_o compass_v and_o bring_v to_o pass_v or_o if_o he_o bring_v they_o to_o pass_v he_o can_v not_o enjoy_v they_o but_o possess_v they_o with_o care_n &_o loss_n not_o through_o any_o fault_n in_o the_o travel_n sustain_v he_o before_o he_o can_v get_v it_o be_v and_o have_v get_v it_o he_o be_v not_o yet_o quiet_a he_o have_v not_o by_n whole_a wish_v but_o while_o he_o be_v careful_o busy_v to_o climb_v yet_o high_o he_o perish_v most_o miserable_o the_o same_o come_v to_o pass_v in_o all_o worldly_a affair_n when_o we_o have_v great_a wealth_n straight_a way_n we_o like_v not_o with_o it_o if_o we_o want_v &_o lack_n we_o be_v never_o quiet_a &_o at_o rest_n for_o desire_n of_o it_o this_o vice_n of_o man_n nature_n and_o inclination_n see_v that_o heathen_a writer_n for_o thus_o say_v ovid_n that_o lawful_a be_v we_o loathe_v and_o like_o the_o thing_n we_o be_v forbid_v to_o do_v that_o follow_v we_o we_o flee_v and_o seek_v to_o follow_v that_o that_o flee_v we_o fro_o again_o the_o present_a state_n do_v no_o man_n please_v upon_o his_o own_o to_o live_v at_o ease_n this_o be_v the_o vanity_n of_o man_n heart_n geve_v never_o to_o be_v content_a with_o god_n present_a blessing_n but_o to_o despise_v they_o seek_v still_o one_o thing_n after_o other_o never_o content_v till_o he_o have_v get_v his_o desire_n and_o have_v once_o get_v it_o nothing_o regard_v it_o captain_n prevail_v among_o fool_n and_o a_o foolish_a prince_n hear_v a_o foolish_a counsellor_n word_n because_o he_o speak_v that_o which_o please_v he_o this_o i_o say_v that_o thou_o must_v consider_v as_o be_v say_v in_o the_o proverb_n the_o fool_n will_v not_o hear_v unless_o thou_o speak_v that_o he_o phansi_v in_o his_o heart_n because_o affection_n rule_v all_o in_o the_o fool_n much_o good_a for_o both_o in_o peace_n and_o war_n there_o be_v such_o unthrift_n and_o naughty_a person_n counsel_n as_o disturb_v all_o thing_n there_o be_v a_o counsellor_n stand_v up_o and_o
