excellency_n sufficient_o evidence_v unto_o the_o enlighten_v mind_n of_o believer_n etc._n etc._n this_o be_v that_o whereon_o we_o believe_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n with_o a_o faith_n divine_a and_o supernatural_a and_o this_o evidence_n be_v manifest_a unto_o the_o mean_a and_o most_o unlearned_a no_o less_o than_o unto_o the_o wise_a philosopher_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v if_o rational_a argument_n and_o external_a motive_n be_v the_o sole_a ground_n of_o receive_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o can_v not_o be_v but_o the_o learned_a man_n and_o philosopher_n will_v always_o have_v be_v the_o forward_a and_o most_o ready_a to_o admit_v it_o and_o most_o firm_o to_o adhere_v unto_o it_o because_o such_o argument_n do_v prevail_v on_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n according_a as_o they_o be_v able_a aright_o to_o discern_v their_o force_n and_o judge_v of_o they_o but_o how_o apparent_a the_o contrary_n be_v be_v evident_a 1.26_o 1_o c●r_n 1.26_o you_o see_v your_o call_v brethren_n not_o many_o wise_a man_n after_o the_o flesh_n etc._n etc._n 2._o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n evidence_v the_o divine_a original_a and_o authority_n of_o the_o scripture_n by_o the_o power_n and_o authority_n which_o he_o put_v forth_o in_o it_o and_o by_o it_o over_o the_o mind_n and_o conscience_n of_o man_n with_o its_o operation_n of_o divine_a effect_n thereon_o this_o the_o apostle_n express_o affirm_v to_o be_v the_o reason_n and_o cause_n of_o faith_n 1_o cor._n 14.24_o 25._o and_o thus_o be_v the_o secret_n of_o his_o heart_n make_v manifest_a etc._n etc._n it_o be_v not_o the_o force_n of_o external_a argument_n it_o be_v not_o the_o testimony_n of_o this_o or_o that_o church_n nor_o be_v it_o the_o use_v of_o miracle_n that_o wrought_v upon_o they_o v._n 23_o 24._o wherefore_o the_o only_a evidence_n whereon_o they_o receive_v the_o word_n and_o acknowledge_v it_o to_o be_v of_o god_n be_v that_o divine_a power_n and_o efficacy_n in_o themselves_o he_o be_v convince_v of_o all_o and_o thus_o the_o secret_n of_o his_o heart_n be_v make_v manifest_a etc._n etc._n he_o can_v deny_v but_o there_o be_v a_o divine_a efficacy_n in_o it_o or_o accompany_v of_o it_o and_o thus_o the_o woman_n of_o samaria_n be_v convince_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o christ_n word_n and_o believe_v in_o he_o i._n e._n because_o he_o tell_v she_o all_o thing_n that_o ever_o she_o do_v 5.10_o do_v joh._n 4.29_o 1_o joh._n 5.10_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v as_o all_o sincere_a soul_n find_v quick_a and_o powerful_a etc._n etc._n so_o that_o he_o that_o believe_v have_v the_o witness_n in_o himself_o john_n 7.16_o 17._o jesus_n answer_v they_o and_o say_v my_o doctrine_n be_v not_o i_o but_o his_o that_o send_v i_o if_o any_o man_n will_v do_v his_o will_n he_o shall_v know_v of_o the_o doctrine_n whether_o it_o be_v of_o god_n or_o whether_o i_o speak_v of_o myself_o in_o a_o word_n let_v it_o be_v grant_v that_o all_o who_o be_v real_o convert_v unto_o god_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o word_n have_v that_o infallible_a evidence_n and_o testimony_n of_o its_o divine_a original_a authority_n and_o power_n in_o their_o own_o soul_n and_o conscience_n that_o they_o thereon_o believe_v it_o with_o faith_n divine_a and_o supernatural_a in_o conjunction_n with_o the_o other_o evidence_n beforementioned_a and_o large_o demonstrate_v as_o part_n of_o the_o same_o divine_a testimony_n and_o it_o be_v all_o i_o aim_v at_o herein_o this_o testimony_n though_o it_o be_v not_o common_a unto_o all_o nor_o can_v it_o convince_v another_o yet_o be_v it_o very_o forceable_a to_o those_o who_o experience_n the_o virtue_n and_o efficacy_n thereof_o which_o we_o have_v in_o another_o place_n more_o large_o open_v we_o shall_v conclude_v this_o last_o argument_n entreat_v all_o to_o labour_v after_o a_o taste_n of_o its_o divine_a powerful_a and_o soul-changing_a operation_n and_o then_o they_o will_v need_v no_o further_a argument_n to_o prove_v it_o be_v of_o god_n we_o shall_v therefore_o conclude_v this_o brief_a discourse_n on_o this_o subject_a with_o those_o excellent_a word_n of_o a_o learned_a man_n upon_o the_o some_o occasion_n let_v this_o remain_n and_o be_v receive_v as_o a_o establish_a truth_n that_o those_o who_o the_o spirit_n have_v inward_o teach_v do_v solid_o acquiesce_v in_o the_o scripture_n and_o that_o the_o same_o be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d self-credible_a or_o for_o its_o own_o sake_n worthy_a of_o belief_n and_o that_o it_o obtain_v that_o certainty_n which_o it_o just_o deserve_v with_o we_o by_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o though_o its_o own_o majesty_n do_v of_o itself_o conciliate_v a_o reverence_n yet_o then_o only_o do_v it_o serious_o affect_v we_o when_o by_o the_o spirit_n it_o be_v seal_v in_o &_o upon_o our_o heart_n with_o who_o truth_n be_v enlighten_v we_o no_o long_o believe_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v from_o god_n by_o our_o own_o judgement_n or_o that_o of_o other_o man_n but_o most_o certain_o above_o all_o humane_a judgement_n we_o be_v assure_v thereof_o no_o otherwise_o than_o as_o if_o there_o we_o behold_v the_o very_a voice_n of_o god_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o man_n flow_v from_o the_o mouth_n of_o god_n to_o we_o no_o long_o do_v we_o then_o seek_v for_o argument_n and_o probable_a proof_n whereon_o our_o judgement_n may_v rely_v but_o subject_a our_o judgement_n and_o understanding_n thereunto_o as_o to_o a_o matter_n already_o out_o of_o all_o doubt_n or_o debate_n yet_o not_o so_o as_o wretched_a man_n be_v wont_a to_o addict_v their_o captive_a mind_n to_o superstition_n but_o because_o we_o find_v and_o feel_v the_o undoubted_a power_n of_o god_n there_o to_o breath_n and_o flourish_v to_o obey_v which_o we_o be_v draw_v and_o inflame_v know_o and_o willing_o but_o more_o lively_o and_o efficacious_o than_o either_o humane_a will_n or_o knowledge_n can_v affect_v we_o it_o be_v therefore_o such_o a_o persuasion_n as_o do_v not_o require_v reason_n and_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o want_v they_o neither_o such_o a_o knowledge_n to_o which_o the_o best_a reason_n appear_v and_o agree_v as_o be_v such_o as_o therein_o the_o mind_n can_v acquiesce_v more_o secure_o and_o constant_o than_o in_o any_o reason_n it_o be_v in_o fine_a such_o a_o sense_n such_o a_o taste_n as_o can_v proceed_v from_o nothing_o but_o a_o revelation_n divine_a nor_o do_v i_o speak_v any_o thing_n but_o what_o every_o true_a believer_n can_v bear_v witness_n to_o from_o his_o own_o experience_n save_v only_o that_o word_n be_v too_o short_a and_o unable_a to_o express_v a_o just_a explication_n of_o the_o thing_n calv._n
