the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o we_o grow_v settle_v in_o the_o assurance_n of_o faith_n and_o experience_v in_o the_o way_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n he_o can_v be_v hurt_v that_o mind_n holiness_n and_o assurance_n beware_v when_o we_o find_v these_o caveat_n in_o the_o scripture_n we_o must_v think_v of_o they_o as_o more_o than_o bare_a note_n of_o attention_n for_o they_o show_v some_o great_a evil_a or_o deceive_n and_o withal_o it_o import_v that_o we_o of_o ourselves_o be_v inclinable_a to_o fall_v as_o in_o this_o place_n this_o beware_v import_v that_o man_n natural_o be_v incline_v to_o falsehood_n more_o than_o truth_n to_o evil_o more_o than_o good_a to_o wise_a man_n more_o than_o the_o wise_a god_n to_o tradition_n more_o than_o the_o write_a word_n to_o their_o own_o device_n more_o than_o god_n precept_n to_o false_a teacher_n more_o than_o the_o true_a apostle_n to_o ceremony_n more_o than_o the_o weighty_a thing_n of_o the_o law_n any_o man_n see_v here_o the_o vanity_n and_o levity_n of_o man_n nature_n many_o man_n either_o by_o word_n or_o example_n can_v reduce_v unto_o order_n or_o unto_o truth_n yet_o any_o man_n may_v seduce_v unto_o sin_n and_o error_n all_o sort_n of_o man_n may_v be_v fountain_n of_o evil_a but_o in_o case_n of_o return_v a_o obstinate_a sinner_n or_o superstitious_a person_n be_v usual_o wise_a than_o or_o to_o circumvent_v or_o to_o deceive_v or_o to_o drive_v away_o as_o a_o prey_n or_o to_o lead_v away_o bond_n and_o captive_a or_o as_o here_o to_o spoil_v it_o be_v so_o to_o seduce_v or_o to_o carry_v away_o as_o a_o spoil_n for_o the_o matter_n express_v in_o this_o word_n we_o may_v note_v 1._o that_o a_o christian_a stand_v in_o danger_n of_o a_o combat_n and_o if_o he_o look_v not_o to_o himself_o may_v be_v spoil_v and_o carry_v captive_a for_o the_o word_n seem_v to_o be_v a_o military_a word_n and_o so_o import_v a_o battle_n 2._o that_o there_o be_v worse_a loss_n may_v befall_v we_o than_o the_o loss_n of_o good_n or_o child_n a_o man_n be_v never_o worse_o spoil_v
it_o be_v true_a that_o all_o the_o carriage_n and_o deal_n of_o christian_n shall_v savour_n of_o the_o thing_n above_o but_o i_o take_v it_o as_o it_o be_v here_o render_v set_a your_o affection_n and_o so_o it_o manifest_o teach_v we_o that_o we_o must_v get_v not_o mind_n or_o thought_n only_o use_v but_o sound_a affection_n to_o heavenly_a thing_n which_o may_v both_o serve_v for_o reproof_n and_o comfort_n for_o reproof_n i_o say_v both_o of_o the_o loathsome_a lukewarmenesse_n of_o the_o most_o 3.19_o and_o of_o the_o dangerous_a loss_n of_o first_o love_n in_o the_o better_a sort_n 2._o for_o comfort_v for_o it_o be_v certain_a if_o thou_o can_v find_v thy_o heart_n upright_o in_o affection_n and_o constant_a desire_n after_o heavenly_a thing_n affection_n thou_o may_v be_v assure_v of_o three_o thing_n 1_o that_o god_n will_v accept_v thy_o will_n for_o the_o deed_n he_o will_v bear_v with_o many_o want_n and_o weakness_n where_o he_o see_v a_o man_n or_o woman_n come_v much_o employ_v about_o profit_n and_o recreation_n note_v but_o a_o man_n shall_v love_v they_o too_o much_o not_o that_o it_o be_v simple_o unlawful_a to_o use_v the_o world_n but_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v very_o jealous_a of_o ourselves_o to_o watch_v our_o own_o heart_n that_o our_o affection_n be_v not_o set_v on_o the_o world_n 3_o 3_o to_o be_v crucify_v unto_o the_o world_n able_a to_o neglect_v and_o contemn_v the_o glory_n and_o pleasure_n of_o it_o be_v a_o notable_a sign_n that_o one_o be_v rise_v with_o christ._n thus_o in_o general_n earth_n the_o thing_n on_o earth_n the_o thing_n on_o earth_n here_o mean_v by_o the_o apostle_n be_v either_o tradition_n mention_v in_o the_o former_a chapter_n or_o worldly_a thing_n in_o themselves_o lawful_a or_o the_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n simple_o in_o themselves_o unlawful_a earth_n tradition_n &_o man_n invention_n which_o the_o apostle_n have_v before_o tax_v may_v well_o be_v call_v thing_n on_o earth_n 1_o because_o they_o spring_v from_o the_o earth_n and_o earthly_a mind_a man_n they_o be_v never_o inspire_v from_o god_n nor_o devise_v by_o heavenly_a mind_a man_n 2_o because_o they_o hinder_v they_o that_o be_v devote_a to_o they_o from_o look_v up_o or_o attain_v any_o insight_n in_o thing_n that_o be_v above_o 3_o because_o these_o by_o effect_n make_v man_n more_o earthly_a and_o sensual_a but_o of_o these_o in_o the_o former_a chapter_n the_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o corruption_n of_o life_n to_o be_v avoid_v and_o not_o affect_v be_v the_o three_o sort_n of_o thing_n on_o earth_n but_o of_o that_o also_o afterward_o in_o the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o general_a duty_n especial_o in_o the_o five_o verse_n so_o that_o the_o second_o sort_n of_o thing_n on_o earth_n remain_v to_o be_v more_o large_o consider_v those_o be_v profit_n honour_n pleasure_n friend_n health_n and_o long_a life_n there_o be_v eight_o reason_n to_o persuade_v not_o to_o affect_v earthly_a thing_n earth_n the_o first_o may_v be_v take_v from_o the_o condition_n of_o man_n on_o earth_n for_o we_o be_v here_o but_o pilgrim_n and_o stranger_n 11.13_o and_o therefore_o be_v but_o in_o a_o strange_a place_n to_o what_o purpose_n shall_v we_o trouble_v ourselves_o with_o more_o than_o what_o will_v serve_v our_o present_a need_n and_o the_o rather_o know_v that_o when_o we_o come_v into_o our_o own_o country_n these_o thing_n will_v serve_v we_o for_o no_o use_n beside_o our_o present_a lot_n lie_v not_o in_o those_o thing_n but_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o righteousness_n be_v our_o portion_n even_o in_o this_o life_n all_o other_o thing_n be_v but_o cast_v upon_o we_o as_o additament_n the_o second_o may_v be_v take_v from_o the_o disability_n of_o earthly_a thing_n for_o first_o they_o can_v so_o much_o as_o fill_v or_o satisfy_v a_o man_n heart_n 2_o they_o can_v fence_v a_o man_n against_o any_o of_o the_o trial_n of_o god_n when_o the_o hour_n of_o tentation_n come_v 3.10_o 3_o they_o can_v all_o of_o they_o redeem_v on_o soul_n 49._o the_o three_o reason_n may_v be_v take_v from_o the_o inconvenience_n that_o follow_v the_o love_n of_o earthly_a thing_n for_o first_o the_o care_n of_o the_o world_n choke_v the_o word_n that_o it_o can_v never_o prosper_v 13._o 2_o they_o breed_v excuse_n and_o shift_n in_o man_n mind_n and_o alienate_v by_o degree_n a_o man_n heart_n from_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n 17._o 3_o to_o seek_v after_o the_o world_n be_v to_o sorrow_n after_o the_o world_n for_o to_o the_o most_o the_o world_n be_v a_o cause_n of_o much_o sorrow_n and_o vexation_n 4_o the_o amity_n of_o the_o world_n as_o the_o apostle_n say_v be_v the_o enmity_n of_o god_n 15._o and_o that_o both_o active_o and_o passive_o for_o it_o both_o make_v we_o hate_n god_n and_o it_o make_v god_n hate_v vs._n five_o the_o lust_n after_o worldly_a thing_n fill_v the_o world_n with_o corruption_n and_o sin_n 4._o six_o these_o earthly_a thing_n thus_o sinister_o affect_v may_v one_o day_n witness_v against_o we_o etc_n seven_o many_o a_o man_n be_v damn_v and_o go_v to_o hell_n for_o mind_v earthly_a thing_n 3.18_o the_o four_o reason_n may_v be_v take_v from_o the_o sovereignty_n that_o god_n have_v over_o all_o earthly_a thing_n and_o the_o power_n he_o have_v give_v to_o christ_n over_o they_o 28.18_o now_o why_o shall_v we_o turmoil_v ourselves_o with_o care_n about_o these_o seeing_z they_o be_v in_o god_n hand_n in_o christ_n to_o have_v they_o and_o dispose_v of_o they_o as_o may_v be_v for_o his_o glory_n and_o our_o if_o they_o be_v compare_v unto_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n for_o which_o we_o ought_v chief_o to_o provide_v the_o whole_a world_n be_v not_o worth_a one_o soul_n which_o may_v appear_v both_o by_o the_o price_n of_o a_o soul_n and_o the_o disproportion_n between_o the_o gain_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o loss_n of_o one_o soul_n 16._o it_o be_v no_o profit_n to_o win_v the_o whole_a world_n and_o lose_v a_o man_n own_o soul_n and_o beside_o if_o the_o whole_a world_n lay_v on_o one_o heap_n will_v have_v be_v a_o sufficient_a sacrifice_n for_o the_o redemption_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o
