A96074 The constant man's character. Intended to be sent first as a letter from a gentleman in the country, to a gentlemen his esteemed friend and countryman, a Member of the House of Commons. Since inlarged into a discourse by way of humble advice to keep him from revolting, either directly or collaterally by the side-winde of being Presbyterially affected, through the mistaken and unhappy conceit, that those who have taken the Covenant, cannot without breach of the same, assent and submit unto the late proceedings of the Parliament, when as the parts of the Covenant seem to be inconsistent within themselves, as the author's observations here discoursed do manifest. The scope whereof is 1 Historically to set down the occasion and beginnings of the war. ... 4 To prove the fitness and necessity (as matters now stand) of complying with, and submitting unto this present government. For the powers that be are ordained of God, Rom. 13. Together with some animadversions incident hereunto on the same book, and on the two declarations, intituled The declarations of the Lords and Commons assembled in Parliament at Oxford. The one touching a treaty for peace, [the] other concerning their endeavors for peace. Printed there, 1643. S. W. 1650 (1650) Wing W105; Thomason E595_7; ESTC R204161 52,955 81

the_o constant_a man_n character_n intend_a to_o be_v send_v first_o as_o a_o letter_n from_z a_o gentleman_n in_o the_o country_n to_o a_o gentleman_n his_o esteem_a friend_n and_o countryman_n a_o member_n of_o the_o house_n of_o commons_o since_o enlarge_v into_o a_o discourse_n by_o way_n of_o humble_a advice_n to_o keep_v he_o from_o revolt_a either_o direct_o or_o collateral_o by_o the_o observation_n here_o discourse_v do_v manifest_a the_o scope_n whereof_o be_v 1_o historical_o to_o set_v down_o the_o occasion_n and_o beginning_n of_o the_o war._n 2_o to_o show_v that_o the_o the_o black_a spread-eagle_n near_o the_o west_n end_v of_o paul_n 1649._o reader_n this_o letter_n rather_o this_o narration_n be_v found_v on_o a_o discourse_n have_v betwixt_o two_o gentleman_n the_o one_o unto_o who_o it_o be_v write_v have_v the_o able_a part_n of_o wit_n and_o speech_n the_o other_o the_o writer_n have_v the_o just_a cause_n or_o at_o least_o he_o judge_v it_o so_o the_o weakness_n of_o who_o judgement_n may_v indeed_o be_v a_o objection_n against_o the_o credit_n of_o the_o work_n there_o be_v three_o mean_n only_o whereby_o to_o discern_v and_o report_v a_o truth_n judgement_n knowledge_n conscience_n the_o two_o first_o judgement_n knowledge_n in_o state-affair_n the_o author_n may_v be_v defective_a in_o the_o strength_n thereof_o notwithstanding_o in_o that_o he_o be_v neither_o engage_v against_o the_o one_o nor_o oblige_v to_o the_o other_o party_n other_o wise_a then_o by_o a_o common_a duty_n his_o judgement_n may_v seem_v the_o more_o right_a and_o clear_a by_o reason_n his_o obligation_n be_v the_o less_o wherefore_o that_o which_o may_v be_v say_v in_o his_o behalf_n be_v that_o the_o conscience_n and_o upright_a truth_n by_o which_o he_o think_v his_o strength_n or_o skill_n enough_o to_o help_v either_o side_n to_o victory_n but_o according_a to_o his_o weak_a and_o spend_v ability_n to_o endeavour_v the_o restore_v the_o three_o nation_n to_o their_o former_a peace_n their_o mutual_a interest_n and_o right_n unto_o which_o the_o only_a and_o next_o way_n be_v to_o deliver_v and_o upright_o to_o set_v down_o the_o truth_n a_o
