joint_n and_o the_o marrow_n and_o be_v a_o discerner_n of_o the_o thought_n &_o the_o intent_n of_o the_o heart_n 13_o neither_o be_v there_o any_o creature_n which_o be_v not_o manifest_a in_o his_o word_n be_v not_o effectual_a indifferent_o and_o equal_o in_o all_o for_o the_o virtue_n thereof_o manifest_v itself_o in_o the_o elect_a that_o be_v humble_v in_o the_o true_a acknowledgement_n of_o themselves_o they_o shall_v have_v their_o recourse_n to_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n which_o can_v be_v do_v unless_o it_o pierce_v into_o the_o very_a depth_n of_o the_o heart_n for_o hypocrisy_n which_o have_v many_o dark_a corner_n and_o wonderful_a conveyance_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n must_v be_v cast_v out_o neither_o be_v it_o enough_o that_o we_o feel_v some_o light_a pricking_n anvil_n drive_v the_o blow_n back_o again_o be_v they_o never_o so_o mighty_a and_o therefore_o it_o be_v unpossible_a the_o word_n of_o god_n shall_v pierce_v so_o far_o in_o they_o as_o to_o come_v to_o the_o division_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o of_o the_o spirit_n for_o this_o cause_n it_o seem_v that_o this_o title_n ought_v only_o to_o be_v restrain_v to_o the_o faithful_a see_v none_o but_o they_o do_v examine_v themselves_o thus_o to_o the_o quick_a notwithstanding_o the_o coherence_n of_o the_o text_n of_o the_o apostle_n show_v that_o it_o be_v a_o general_a sentence_n which_o extend_v itself_o even_o to_o the_o reprobate_n for_o although_o they_o be_v not_o soften_v by_o it_o but_o do_v set_v heart_n of_o iron_n and_o steel_n against_o god_n and_o his_o word_n yet_o must_v they_o necessary_o be_v shut_v up_o under_o their_o own_o condemnation_n it_o be_v true_a they_o laugh_v but_o it_o be_v the_o laughter_n of_o a_o ostler_n as_o they_o say_v for_o they_o feel_v and_o scratch_v the_o chain_n yet_o they_o gain_v nothing_o because_o they_o still_o remain_v fast_o tie_v therewith_o now_o howsoever_o this_o effect_n of_o the_o word_n do_v not_o show_v itself_o at_o the_o first_o day_n yet_o by_o the_o event_n at_o the_o last_o you_o shall_v know_v that_o the_o word_n be_v not_o preach_v to_o any_o man_n in_o vain_a very_o it_o be_v a_o general_a sentence_n meaning_n the_o earth_n say_v he_o which_o drink_v in_o the_o rain_n present_o after_o seed_n time_n if_o it_o bring_v not_o forth_o of_o the_o kernel_n a_o bastard_n or_o wild_a grass_n be_v at_o the_o length_n bring_v to_o the_o ripeness_n of_o good_a corn_n by_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n so_o also_o they_o that_o receive_v the_o seed_n of_o the_o gospel_n into_o their_o heart_n and_o of_o this_o seed_n do_v bring_v forth_o a_o good_a and_o natural_a blade_n do_v always_o grow_v better_a and_o better_o till_o they_o bring_v forth_o ripe_a fruit_n contrariwise_o the_o earth_n which_o have_v be_v plough_v and_o water_v and_o yet_o bring_v forth_o nothing_o but_o thorn_n and_o brier_n give_v no_o hope_n to_o the_o reaper_n ver._n 8_o but_o which_o be_v worse_o the_o more_o that_o which_o be_v come_v forth_o grow_v the_o more_o be_v he_o leave_v hopeless_a and_o therefore_o the_o only_a remedy_n be_v that_o the_o labourer_n set_v this_o field_n on_o fire_n which_o be_v so_o full_a of_o naughty_a and_o unprofitable_a grass_n so_o they_o also_o who_o by_o their_o loose_a and_o wicked_a affection_n do_v corrupt_v the_o seed_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o in_o their_o life_n they_o give_v no_o token_n at_o all_o of_o profit_v and_o go_v forward_o they_o show_v themselves_o to_o be_v castawaies_a so_o as_o they_o give_v no_o hope_n of_o any_o good_a harvest_n the_o apostle_n then_o in_o this_o place_n not_o only_o handle_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o still_o hold_v on_o his_o exhortation_n that_o we_o shall_v embrace_v the_o gospel_n with_o a_o cheerful_a and_o ready_a affection_n and_o that_o as_o soon_o as_o seed_v time_n be_v do_v there_o do_v by_o and_o by_o some_o fruit_n appear_v three_o that_o after_o much_o and_o often_o water_v increasing_n do_v follow_v whereas_o we_o have_v put_v meet_a herb_n or_o profitable_a other_o translate_v herb_n of_o season_n both_o signification_n agree_v well_o but_o the_o last_o be_v refer_v to_o the_o time_n the_o first_o to_o the_o qualitic_a as_o for_o the_o allegorical_a sense_n wherewithal_o expositor_n do_v please_v themselves_o i_o let_v they_o pass_v because_o they_o be_v far_o wide_a from_o the_o author_n meaning_n but_o belove_a we_o be_v persuade_v better_a of_o you_o etc._n etc._n verse_n 9_o because_o the_o former_a sentence_n be_v like_a thundering_n by_o which_o the_o reader_n may_v be_v overwhelm_v and_o altogether_o amaze_v it_o be_v needful_a now_o to_o allay_v this_o sharpness_n and_o therefore_o he_o say_v that_o though_o he_o have_v thus_o speak_v it_o be_v not_o because_o he_o have_v conceive_v so_o hard_a a_o opinion_n of_o they_o and_o true_o whosoever_o he_o be_v that_o do_v indeed_o desire_v to_o profit_v by_o teach_v or_o exhort_v ought_v thus_o be_v profitable_a that_o the_o elect_v themselves_o shall_v be_v sometime_o sharp_o reproove_v that_o it_o be_v needful_a to_o reproove_v sharp_o and_o with_o great_a vehemency_n not_o the_o reprobate_n only_o but_o even_o the_o elect_a themselves_o and_o those_o who_o we_o account_v as_o the_o child_n of_o god_n for_o god_n be_v not_o unjust_a etc._n etc._n these_o word_n import_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v objection_n that_o of_o these_o good_a beginning_n he_o hope_v there_o will_v be_v a_o good_a end_n but_o here_o arise_v a_o difficulty_n for_o it_o seem_v as_o if_o he_o mean_v to_o say_v that_o god_n be_v behold_v unto_o man_n in_o regard_n of_o that_o they_o have_v do_v for_o he_o i_o hope_v well_o say_v he_o of_o your_o salvation_n why_o because_o god_n be_v not_o unrighteous_a that_o he_o shall_v forget_v your_o work_n by_o this_o it_o may_v seem_v that_o he_o build_v their_o salvation_n upon_o work_n and_o bring_v in_o god_n as_o one_o indebt_v unto_o they_o thus_o the_o sophister_n who_o oppose_v the_o merit_n of_o work_n to_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n do_v debate_v this_o point_n and_o insist_v upon_o it_o very_o much_o god_n say_v what_o it_o be_v that_o be_v due_a to_o work_n the_o scripture_n every_o where_o show_v none_o other_o cause_n of_o our_o salvation_n than_o the_o free_a mercy_n of_o god_n now_o whereas_o god_n in_o many_o place_n promise_v reward_n to_o work_n this_o depend_v upon_o his_o free_a promise_n by_o which_o he_o have_v adopt_v we_o for_o his_o child_n and_o reconcile_v we_o unto_o himself_o not_o impute_v our_o sin_n unto_o us._n reward_v then_o be_v appoint_v unto_o work_n not_o for_o any_o merit_n that_o be_v in_o they_o liberality_n reward_n be_v not_o give_v unto_o work_n for_o any_o merit_n but_o upon_o god_n mere_a liberality_n but_o by_o the_o mere_a liberality_n of_o god_n yea_o even_o this_o free_a recompense_n of_o work_n proceed_v from_o the_o free_a bounty_n and_o touch_v the_o sanctuary_n he_o have_v speak_v heretofore_o but_o he_o note_v a_o difference_n in_o the_o kind_n of_o sacrifice_n because_o christ_n offer_v himself_o and_o not_o a_o beast_n and_o then_o he_o note_v another_o difference_n to_o wit_n that_o he_o do_v not_o often_o offer_v this_o sacrifice_n as_o under_o the_o law_n where_o they_o often_o yea_o and_o almost_o continual_o reiterated_a their_o sacrifice_n for_o than_o he_o must_v have_v often_o suffer_v verse_n 26_o etc._n etc._n he_o show_v how_o absurd_a and_o unreasonable_a a_o thing_n it_o shall_v be_v if_o we_o 1._o cor._n 15.50_o flesh_n and_o blood_n shall_v not_o inherit_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n these_o fantastical_a spirit_n than_o do_v altogether_o dote_v who_o have_v dream_v that_o christ_n be_v now_o despoil_v of_o his_o flesh_n because_o it_o be_v here_o say_v when_o he_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n for_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o be_v a_o true_a man_n although_o in_o the_o bless_a estate_n of_o immortality_n and_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o misery_n and_o infirmity_n of_o man_n which_o he_o endure_v while_o he_o live_v in_o this_o world_n but_o now_o have_v put_v they_o off_o be_v enter_v into_o heaven_n let_v we_o come_v to_o the_o point_n of_o this_o text_n then_o death_n christ_n prayer_n be_v hear_v and_o yet_o he_o suffer_v death_n christ_n which_o be_v the_o son_n seek_v for_o remedy_n to_o his_o father_n who_o be_v hear_v and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o endure_v death_n that_o by_o this_o mean_v he_o may_v learn_v obedience_n there_o be_v no_o word_n here_o which_o have_v not_o his_o weight_n for_o by_o the_o day_n of_o his_o flesh_n he_o mean_v that_o the_o time_n of_o our_o misery_n be_v determine_v and_o limit_v which_o must_v needs_o bring_v great_a solace_n unto_o us._n it_o be_v a_o troublesome_a estate_n yea_o and_o unpossible_a to_o be_v bear_v if_o some_o hope_n be_v not_o set_v before_o we_o that_o we_o shall_v come_v from_o under_o the_o burden_n thereof_o in_o time_n the_o three_o thing_n that_o follow_v do_v also_o bring_v great_a consolation_n christ_n be_v the_o son_n and_o therefore_o his_o dignity_n do_v exempt_v he_o from_o the_o common_a condition_n of_o other_o notwithstanding_o he_o humble_v himself_o thereunto_o for_o the_o love_n he_o bare_a us._n child_n affliction_n do_v noâ—_n exempt_v we_o out_o of_o the_o number_n of_o god_n child_n what_o be_v he_o now_o that_o dare_v refuse_v this_o state_n and_o condition_n there_o be_v another_o reason_n to_o wit_n that_o if_o we_o be_v press_v with_o adversity_n yet_o we_o be_v not_o therefore_o out_o of_o the_o number_n of_o god_n child_n because_o we_o see_v he_o that_o be_v the_o only_a natural_a son_n of_o god_n to_o go_v before_o us._n for_o we_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n only_o by_o the_o benefit_n of_o adoption_n yet_o he_o who_o of_o right_n may_v attribute_v this_o honour_n to_o himself_o receive_v we_o into_o his_o society_n do_v offer_v up_o prayer_n and_o supplication_n etc._n etc._n the_o second_o be_v this_o that_o christ_n seek_v remedy_n at_o his_o hand_n who_o be_v able_a to_o save_v he_o that_o he_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o his_o trouble_n and_o this_o he_o say_v to_o the_o end_n none_o shall_v think_v that_o christ_n have_v a_o heart_n of_o brass_n without_o feeling_n for_o we_o must_v always_o consider_v to_o what_o end_n every_o thing_n be_v speak_v if_o christ_n have_v not_o be_v touch_v with_o any_o sorrow_n what_o consolation_n will_v have_v come_v unto_o we_o by_o his_o passion_n but_o when_o we_o hear_v that_o he_o feel_v not_o bodily_a pain_n alone_o but_o also_o endure_v sharp_a torment_n in_o his_o spirit_n herein_o be_v the_o similitude_n show_v between_o he_o and_o us._n for_o when_o christ_n say_v he_o endure_v death_n and_o other_o misery_n it_o be_v not_o to_o the_o end_n he_o shall_v set_v they_o light_n or_o not_o be_v touch_v with_o any_o feel_n of_o they_o for_o he_o pray_v with_o cry_n and_o tear_n by_o which_o he_o give_v testimony_n of_o the_o great_a anguish_n that_o be_v in_o his_o heart_n the_o apostle_n then_o by_o these_o tear_n and_o strong_a cry_n will_v express_v a_o vehement_a dolour_n it_o be_v a_o ordinary_a manner_n of_o speech_n to_o note_v out_o that_o which_o be_v do_v by_o the_o sign_n neither_o do_v i_o doubt_v but_o that_o he_o speak_v of_o that_o prayer_n which_o the_o evangelist_n recite_v to_o wit_n father_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a let_v this_o cup_n pass_v from_o i_o matth._n 26.39_o also_o another_o time_n my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o for_o the_o evangelist_n recite_v that_o in_o this_o second_o prayer_n there_o be_v a_o great_a cry_n in_o the_o first_o we_o must_v not_o imagine_v that_o his_o but_o what_o use_n have_v this_o true_o that_o as_o often_o as_o we_o be_v press_v under_o temptation_n we_o learn_v to_o fasten_v all_o our_o sense_n upon_o the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o feel_v the_o like_a see_v he_o go_v before_o we_o then_o spirit_n what_o we_o be_v to_o do_v in_o temptation_n of_o spirit_n we_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o be_v out_o of_o heart_n and_o withal_o we_o be_v admonish_v not_o to_o sue_v unto_o any_o for_o deliverance_n out_o of_o our_o misery_n but_o to_o god_n alone_o for_o what_o better_a rule_n of_o prayer_n can_v we_o have_v than_o the_o example_n of_o christ_n now_o he_o direct_v his_o prayer_n to_o none_o but_o to_o his_o father_n o_o my_o father_n say_v he_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a etc._n etc._n matth._n 26.39_o and_o the_o apostle_n show_v we_o that_o we_o be_v to_o do_v the_o like_a when_o he_o say_v that_o christ_n offer_v up_o prayer_n to_o he_o that_o be_v able_a to_o save_v he_o from_o death_n for_o hereby_o he_o signify_v that_o christ_n pray_v right_o because_o he_o have_v his_o recourse_n to_o he_o that_o be_v true_o bountiful_a who_o be_v god_n only_o his_o cry_n and_o tear_n do_v also_o admonish_v we_o to_o be_v fervent_a and_o the_o more_o attent_a when_o we_o make_v our_o prayer_n servant_n prayer_n ought_v to_o be_v servant_n for_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o go_v to_o prayer_n retchless_n but_o with_o fervency_n of_o spirit_n and_o be_v hear_v in_o that_o which_o he_o fear_v some_o have_v translate_v for_o his_o reverence_n but_o i_o do_v not_o at_o any_o hand_n approve_v of_o it_o for_o first_o the_o adiective_n he_o be_v not_o add_v in_o the_o greek_a moreover_o the_o word_n which_o follow_v signify_v of_o or_o some_o word_n like_a unto_o it_o see_v then_o that_o the_o greek_a noun_n which_o be_v put_v here_o signify_v oftentimes_o rather_o fear_n or_o care_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o the_o apostle_n mean_v to_o show_v that_o christ_n be_v hear_v in_o that_o which_o he_o fear_v that_o be_v to_o say_v albeit_o he_o be_v overwhelm_v with_o sorrow_n and_o adversity_n yet_o he_o fall_v not_o under_o the_o flesh_n ourselves_o our_o obedience_n chief_o appear_v in_o the_o denial_n of_o ourselves_o to_o yield_v to_o that_o which_o be_v please_v unto_o god_n then_o and_o never_o till_o then_o do_v our_o obedience_n appear_v this_o i_o say_v be_v a_o singular_a and_o evident_a testimony_n of_o perfect_a subjection_n when_o as_o we_o prefer_v death_n itself_o to_o which_o we_o be_v call_v of_o god_n although_o it_o bring_v fear_n and_o horror_n before_o life_n which_o all_o of_o we_o do_v rather_o natural_o desire_v and_o be_v consecrate_v be_v make_v etc._n etc._n verse_n 9_o this_o be_v the_o last_o or_o further_a end_n as_o they_o say_v wherefore_o it_o behoove_v christ_n to_o priesthood_n by_o the_o cross_n as_o if_o the_o apostle_n shall_v have_v say_v the_o suffering_n of_o the_o cross_n and_o death_n be_v unto_o christ_n the_o solemn_a manner_n of_o his_o consecration_n
