cause_n of_o their_o destruction_n as_o we_o see_v heavy_a plague_n and_o judgement_n to_o have_v overtake_v hananiah_n shemaiah_n amaziah_n 7.17_o jer._n 28.16.29_o 25._o amos_n 7.17_o and_o other_o because_o they_o be_v malicious_a enemy_n against_o his_o prophet_n jeremiah_n amos_n and_o other_o the_o use_n which_o our_o apostle_n here_o teach_v we_o to_o make_v hereof_o be_v this_o not_o to_o fear_v the_o adversary_n that_o oppose_v themselves_o against_o we_o for_o when_o they_o persecute_v we_o from_o one_o city_n to_o another_o beat_v we_o imprison_v we_o and_o every_o way_n afflict_v we_o who_o hurt_n they_o even_o themselves_o they_o run_v themselves_o upon_o the_o rock_n and_o bring_v upon_o themselves_o swift_a damnation_n they_o think_v they_o have_v great_a mastery_n over_o this_o may_v serve_v to_o teach_v we_o what_o novice_n yet_o we_o be_v in_o the_o school_n of_o christ_n for_o how_o many_o of_o we_o esteem_v it_o a_o singular_a gift_n of_o god_n to_o suffer_v if_o it_o be_v use_v by_o any_o it_o be_v note_v by_o many_o and_o they_o straight_a way_n censure_v as_o think_v themselves_o more_o holy_a than_o other_o man_n and_o public_a prayer_n so_o little_o regard_v by_o some_o that_o very_o seldom_o they_o be_v present_a with_o the_o congregation_n in_o public_a prayer_n i_o can_v stand_v of_o it_o only_o i_o say_v he_o that_o neglect_v the_o mean_n that_o christ_n may_v be_v glorify_v in_o their_o body_n whether_o it_o be_v by_o life_n or_o death_n thus_o the_o church_n shall_v pray_v and_o thus_o the_o afflict_a shall_v desire_v the_o church_n his_o people_n we_o shall_v not_o now_o need_v other_o proof_n than_o this_o of_o our_o apostle_n in_o this_o place_n the_o philippian_n have_v embrace_v the_o faith_n of_o jesus_n christ_n they_o abound_v in_o knowledge_n and_o in_o judgement_n they_o stand_v fast_o in_o the_o faith_n notwithstanding_o their_o assault_n by_o false_a apostle_n they_o be_v careful_a over_o he_o and_o communicate_v to_o his_o affliction_n they_o be_v excellent_a in_o many_o grace_n so_o that_o our_o apostle_n have_v great_a cause_n to_o have_v great_a joy_n over_o they_o but_o because_o of_o some_o contention_n and_o vainglory_n among_o they_o his_o joy_n be_v not_o full_a a_o sufficient_a precedent_n for_o the_o pastor_n that_o he_o count_v not_o his_o joy_n full_a so_o long_o as_o any_o thing_n be_v amiss_o among_o his_o people_n which_o may_v serve_v to_o admonish_v the_o pastor_n to_o labour_v that_o nothing_o may_v be_v amiss_o among_o his_o people_n either_o touch_a life_n or_o doctrine_n that_o so_o his_o joy_n may_v be_v full_a and_o that_o his_o people_n may_v be_v the_o crown_n of_o his_o rejoice_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n at_o his_o come_n but_o i_o come_v unto_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v in_o general_n the_o thing_n which_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v the_o philippian_n in_o general_a be_v that_o they_o be_v like_o mind_a that_o be_v like_o affection_a have_v their_o affection_n like_n and_o desire_v set_v on_o the_o same_o thing_n a_o evident_a argument_n that_o they_o be_v not_o like_v mind_v as_o also_o the_o rest_n which_o follow_v be_v that_o some_o thing_n be_v amiss_o among_o they_o and_o in_o that_o he_o deal_v so_o earnest_o with_o they_o that_o these_o thing_n may_v be_v amend_v in_o they_o it_o show_v that_o these_o be_v thing_n which_o be_v careful_o to_o be_v procure_v regard_v and_o maintain_v lecture_n xxv_o philip_n 2._o verse_n 2._o that_o you_o be_v like_o mind_a have_v the_o same_o love_n be_v of_o one_o accord_n and_o of_o one_o judgement_n that_o nothing_o be_v do_v through_o contention_n etc._n etc._n we_o have_v hear_v the_o manner_n of_o the_o apostle_n exhortation_n and_o therein_o four_o very_o pathetical_a argument_n couch_v to_o persuade_v the_o thing_n whereunto_o he_o exhort_v all_o so_o close_o follow_v and_o so_o passionate_o urge_v as_o that_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o exhortation_n can_v not_o be_v devise_v more_o effectual_a to_o persuade_v the_o thing_n whereunto_o he_o exhort_v if_o there_o be_v etc._n etc._n it_o remain_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o apostle_n exhortation_n we_o speak_v only_o of_o that_o which_o i_o take_v to_o be_v only_o a_o motive_n prefix_v before_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o exhortation_n in_o these_o word_n fulfil_v my_o joy_n now_o we_o be_v to_o proceed_v unto_o the_o main_a matter_n of_o the_o apostle_n exhortation_n which_o be_v that_o they_o be_v like_o mind_a have_v the_o same_o love_n etc._n etc._n by_o which_o matter_n of_o the_o exhortation_n this_o in_o general_n appear_v that_o some_o thing_n be_v amiss_o among_o they_o there_o be_v not_o that_o love_n and_o concord_n among_o they_o nor_o that_o humility_n which_o shall_v he_o in_o they_o many_o thing_n be_v do_v among_o they_o through_o contention_n through_o vainglory_n through_o self-seeking_a of_o their_o own_o thing_n so_o that_o though_o many_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v much_o commend_v in_o they_o yet_o be_v some_o thing_n likewise_o to_o be_v reform_v in_o they_o which_o hinder_v the_o course_n of_o that_o christian_a conversation_n which_o become_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n jesus_n whence_o i_o observe_v in_o general_a what_o the_o state_n even_o of_o the_o best_a reform_a church_n and_o so_o of_o the_o most_o holy_a man_n be_v no_o church_n so_o reform_v no_o man_n so_o sanctify_v but_o that_o many_o thing_n be_v amiss_o among_o they_o though_o many_o thing_n be_v much_o to_o be_v commend_v in_o they_o yet_o some_o thing_n likewise_o be_v still_o to_o be_v reform_v in_o they_o look_v into_o all_o those_o church_n unto_o which_o our_o apostle_n write_v his_o epistle_n you_o shall_v not_o find_v any_o of_o they_o so_o commend_v for_o embrace_v the_o truth_n and_o for_o stand_v fast_o in_o the_o truth_n as_o this_o church_n of_o philippi_n he_o give_v indeed_o testimony_n unto_o the_o galathian_o that_o they_o be_v sometime_o such_o as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v possible_a will_v have_v pluck_v out_o their_o own_o eye_n and_o have_v give_v they_o unto_o he_o so_o love_v they_o he_o there_o most_o commend_v yet_o in_o both_o those_o church_n by_o the_o right_a understanding_n of_o those_o epistle_n that_o be_v write_v to_o they_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o there_o be_v some_o among_o they_o who_o profess_v themselves_o to_o be_v good_a christian_n whereas_o indeed_o they_o be_v no_o better_a than_o a_o synagogue_n and_o sink_v of_o satan_n again_o look_v into_o the_o reform_a church_n ever_o since_o that_o time_n unto_o this_o day_n and_o at_o this_o day_n and_o still_o you_o shall_v see_v that_o as_o in_o those_o seven_o church_n of_o asia_n so_o in_o these_o there_o be_v and_o be_v as_o many_o thing_n to_o be_v commend_v so_o likewise_o many_o thing_n to_o be_v reprehend_v and_o so_o long_o as_o the_o church_n be_v militant_a upon_o earth_n it_o can_v be_v but_o that_o she_o shall_v be_v black_a black_a i_o say_v not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o her_o affliction_n whereby_o her_o belove_a do_v sometime_o prove_v she_o and_o sometime_o chastise_v trust_n in_o the_o lord_n and_o submit_v themselves_o unto_o his_o will_n for_o both_o health_n and_o sickness_n they_o be_v of_o the_o lord_n and_o both_o in_o health_n and_o in_o sickness_n we_o shall_v put_v our_o trust_n in_o the_o lord_n and_o submit_v ourselves_o unto_o his_o will_n yet_o so_o choice_n we_o be_v that_o we_o can_v be_v content_a to_o receive_v health_n from_o the_o lord_n but_o hardly_o to_o receive_v sickness_n from_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o weak_a we_o be_v even_o the_o best_a of_o we_o that_o howsoever_o we_o do_v in_o health_n yet_o in_o sickness_n we_o can_v hardly_o submit_v ourselves_o unto_o god_n his_o will_n and_o oftentimes_o more_o put_v our_o trust_n in_o physician_n then_o in_o the_o lord_n 16._o 2_o cron._n 16._o as_o we_o read_v that_o that_o good_a king_n of_o judah_n asa_n do_v therein_o decline_v from_o that_o right_a path_n wherein_o he_o ought_v to_o have_v walk_v sometime_o then_o as_o i_o say_v god_n child_n be_v sick_a that_o the_o lord_n their_o god_n may_v so_o try_v whether_o they_o will_v still_o cleave_v fast_o unto_o he_o and_o patient_o submit_v themselves_o unto_o his_o will_n a_o four_o reason_n why_o the_o loâ—d_n sometime_o visit_v his_o child_n with_o sickness_n be_v that_o they_o also_o may_v have_v a_o far_a trial_n of_o the_o merciful_a goodness_n of_o the_o lord_n towards_o they_o for_o albeit_o his_o child_n be_v never_o without_o great_a experience_n of_o his_o merciful_a goodness_n towards_o they_o yet_o wherein_o have_v they_o great_a experience_n thereof_o and_o wherein_o their_o soul_n more_o to_o rejoice_v then_o that_o in_o the_o time_n of_o their_o sickness_n he_o assi_v they_o with_o the_o comfort_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o give_v they_o strength_n and_o patience_n to_o endure_v what_o he_o lay_v upon_o they_o and_o suffer_v not_o their_o faith_n or_o their_o hope_n to_o fail_v but_o so_o prepare_v they_o unto_o he_o that_o come_v death_n come_v life_n they_o can_v willing_o embrace_v either_o because_o they_o know_v that_o come_v death_n come_v life_n they_o be_v the_o lord_n a_o especial_a great_a goodness_n of_o the_o lord_n towards_o his_o child_n whereof_o they_o have_v such_o trial_n in_o time_n of_o their_o sickness_n as_o that_o thereby_o not_o themselves_n alone_o but_o such_o as_o be_v about_o they_o be_v and_o may_v be_v great_o comfort_v and_o sometime_o no_o doubt_n they_o be_v sick_a that_o see_v the_o goodness_n of_o the_o lord_n towards_o they_o in_o time_n of_o their_o sickness_n they_o may_v the_o rather_o praise_v the_o lord_n for_o his_o goodness_n and_o study_v to_o glorify_v his_o name_n in_o the_o time_n of_o their_o health_n not_o to_o trouble_v you_o with_o more_o reason_n hereof_o the_o last_o reason_n why_o the_o lord_n visit_v his_o child_n with_o sickness_n be_v to_o put_v they_o in_o mind_n both_o of_o that_o sin_n which_o dwell_v in_o they_o and_o also_o of_o their_o mortality_n for_o sickness_n be_v both_o the_o fruit_n of_o sin_n and_o also_o the_o harbinger_n of_o death_n for_o howsoever_o sin_n be_v not_o the_o only_a cause_n wherefore_o sickness_n come_v yet_o be_v it_o always_o a_o cause_n wherefore_o it_o be_v send_v insomuch_o that_o we_o see_v when_o our_o saviour_n heal_v some_o that_o be_v sick_a he_o will_v say_v sometime_o unto_o they_o some_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n thy_o sin_n be_v satan_n think_v that_o job_n will_v have_v be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o appear_v by_o these_o word_n where_o he_o say_v unto_o god_n 1.10_o job_n 1.10_o do_v he_o fear_v god_n for_o nought_o and_o the_o same_o may_v be_v say_v of_o rejoice_v have_v thou_o not_o make_v a_o hedge_n about_o he_o and_o about_o his_o house_n and_o about_o all_o that_o he_o have_v on_o every_o side_n thou_o have_v bless_v the_o work_n of_o his_o hand_n and_o his_o substance_n be_v increase_v in_o the_o land_n 11._o 11._o but_o stretch_v out_o now_o thy_o hand_n and_o touch_v all_o that_o he_o have_v to_o see_v if_o shall_v we_o say_v then_o when_o the_o lord_n afflict_v we_o with_o poverty_n sickness_n and_o the_o like_a cross_n must_v we_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n yea_o very_o 2.6.7_o 1._o sam._n 2.6.7_o appear_v that_o we_o be_v not_o always_o to_o rejoice_v not_o so_o neither_o for_o even_o then_o when_o we_o sigh_v and_o mourn_v for_o the_o affliction_n we_o have_v in_o the_o world_n we_o be_v to_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n and_o to_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n in_o christ_n jesus_n because_o he_o have_v overcome_v the_o world_n even_o then_o when_o we_o mourn_v through_o a_o sense_n of_o god_n judgement_n we_o be_v to_o rejoice_v in_o his_o tender_a mercy_n that_o he_o deal_v not_o with_o we_o after_o our_o deserve_n even_o then_o when_o we_o mourn_v in_o the_o body_n because_o of_o affliction_n we_o be_v to_o rejoice_v in_o our_o soul_n because_o of_o our_o strong_a consolation_n in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o because_o our_o light_a affliction_n in_o the_o body_n cause_v unto_o we_o a_o far_o most_o excellent_a and_o a_o eternal_a weight_n of_o glory_n and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o same_o place_n where_o he_o say_v bless_a be_v they_o that_o mourn_v exhort_v also_o to_o rejoice_v and_o be_v glad_a in_o persecution_n for_o that_o great_a be_v our_o reward_n in_o heaven_n let_v this_o then_o teach_v we_o to_o take_v heed_n how_o we_o murmur_v against_o
