creature_n to_o our_o lust_n as_o food_n raiment_n etc._n etc._n but_o to_o use_v whatsoever_o we_o enjoy_v to_o god_n glory_n according_a to_o his_o wil._n second_o to_o endeavour_v to_o be_v lead_v by_o the_o creature_n which_o we_o enjoy_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o creator_n for_o they_o be_v he_o but_o alas_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o world_n be_v otherwise_o man_n suffer_v themselves_o by_o the_o creature_n to_o be_v draw_v from_o god_n for_o some_o make_v their_o belly_n their_o god_n too_o other_o riches_n and_o pleasure_n be_v their_o god_n three_o christ_n saying_n of_o the_o father_n that_o he_o make_v his_o sun_n to_o arise_v on_o the_o evil_a and_o on_o the_o good_a do_v show_v we_o that_o common_a bounty_n which_o god_n vouchsafe_v to_o his_o creature_n both_o good_a and_o bad_a for_o the_o rise_n and_o shine_v of_o the_o sun_n be_v a_o excellent_a work_n of_o god_n by_o which_o sun_n many_o other_o blessing_n be_v convey_v to_o the_o creature_n show_v that_o rain_n the_o same_o god_n who_o ordain_v in_o the_o beginning_n that_o the_o cloud_n shall_v 1_o water_v the_o earth_n do_v by_o his_o own_o power_n uphold_v the_o continuance_n of_o the_o same_o blessing_n unto_o this_o day_n and_o indeed_o if_o he_o shall_v not_o will_v the_o continuance_n hereof_o it_o will_v for_o ever_o cease_v to_o rain_v upon_o the_o earth_n second_o 2_o his_o hand_n like_o a_o sponge_n &_o when_o he_o will_v he_o press_v out_o the_o rain_n thereof_o now_o if_o we_o obey_v he_o he_o will_v cause_v it_o to_o fall_v upon_o the_o earth_n for_o a_o blessing_n but_o if_o we_o rebel_v against_o he_o he_o will_v either_o hold_v it_o back_o or_o pour_v it_o down_o upon_o we_o for_o a_o curse_n 3._o see_v god_n send_v down_o the_o rain_n we_o may_v gather_v that_o no_o man_n 3_o can_v certain_o tell_v by_o the_o course_n of_o the_o heaven_n the_o particular_a season_n of_o the_o uncertain_a weather_n day_n by_o day_n if_o the_o rain_n depend_v whole_o upon_o the_o celestial_a body_n then_o shall_v it_o fall_v alike_o in_o all_o place_n that_o be_v of_o like_a position_n to_o the_o heaven_n but_o that_o be_v not_o so_o for_o god_n order_v it_o according_a to_o the_o state_n of_o the_o people_n upon_o who_o it_o fall_v either_o for_o a_o blessing_n or_o a_o curse_n as_o we_o have_v hear_v 4._o hence_o we_o may_v gather_v that_o neither_o witch_n by_o the_o help_n of_o satan_n 4_o nor_o yet_o satan_n himself_o can_v cause_v rain_n as_o many_o think_v for_o it_o be_v god_n always_o â—ame_n that_o rain_v the_o devil_n indeed_o be_v the_o prince_n of_o the_o air_n and_o by_o god_n permission_n he_o may_v join_v himself_o unto_o a_o storm_n &_o make_v it_o more_o terrible_a and_o hurtful_a as_o he_o do_v in_o the_o destruction_n of_o 19_o job_n cattle_n &_o child_n by_o fire_n from_o heaven_n &_o by_o a_o mighty_a wind_n but_o yet_o he_o can_v make_v the_o matter_n of_o wind_n or_o of_o rain_n that_o be_v proper_a to_o god_n 5._o do_v god_n rain_n upon_o the_o earth_n then_o we_o may_v well_o consider_v 5_o punishment_n why_o the_o land_n be_v so_o often_o plague_v with_o unseasonable_a rain_n it_o be_v no_o doubt_n for_o our_o disobedience_n as_o we_o have_v hear_v leu._n 26._o 19_o &_o the_o contempt_n of_o the_o word_n among_o other_o sin_n be_v one_o main_a cause_n of_o this_o judgement_n now_o if_o we_o will_v either_o remove_v or_o prevent_v this_o plague_n at_o any_o time_n we_o must_v turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o repent_v of_o our_o sin_n for_o thereto_o we_o be_v call_v by_o this_o judgement_n amos_n 4._o 7._o and_o if_o we_o do_v turn_v then_o will_v the_o lord_n send_v a_o gracious_a rain_n upon_o our_o land_n but_o if_o we_o will_v not_o turn_v we_o shall_v have_v another_o rain_n the_o rain_n of_o sodom_n and_o gomortha_n for_o â—_o upon_o the_o wicked_a god_n will_v rain_v snare_n fire_n and_o brimstone_n and_o this_o be_v certain_a where_o god_n send_v his_o judgement_n for_o the_o contempt_n of_o his_o word_n and_o yet_o man_n do_v not_o repent_v there_o etc._n one_o judgement_n be_v but_o the_o forerunner_n of_o a_o great_a till_o they_o be_v consume_v and_o since_o experience_n teach_v that_o after_o inundation_n of_o water_n usual_o come_v plague_n and_o pestilence_n for_o the_o prevent_n of_o these_o judgement_n let_v we_o repent_v the_o last_o point_n to_o be_v here_o observe_v be_v this_o in_o what_o term_n our_o saviour_n enemy_n christ_n express_v who_o be_v the_o friend_n of_o god_n and_o who_o be_v his_o enemy_n his_o friend_n he_o call_v good_a and_o just_a his_o enemy_n evil_a and_o unjust_a now_o that_o we_o may_v discern_v of_o our_o estate_n towards_o god_n in_o this_o behalf_n we_o must_v see_v what_o a_o good_a and_o just_a man_n be_v in_o every_o such_o a_o one_o two_o thing_n be_v require_v first_o true_a faith_n man_n whereby_o a_o man_n lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n for_o his_o
fast_v then_o much_o more_o will_v he_o blame_v they_o that_o fast_o not_o at_o all_o though_o never_o so_o just_a occasion_n be_v give_v unto_o they_o for_o in_o this_o case_n it_o be_v not_o a_o wherefore_o to_o fast_v move_v our_o heart_n hereunto_o let_v we_o consider_v these_o reason_n first_o we_o 1_o have_v here_o in_o the_o worthy_a precedent_n of_o most_o holy_a man_n in_o time_n past_a who_o careful_o perform_v this_o duty_n when_o occasion_n be_v offer_v as_o david_n daniel_n ezra_n nehemiah_n our_o saviour_n christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n especial_o 27._o paul_n who_o fast_v often_o now_o their_o example_n must_v be_v a_o cloud_n of_o witness_n unto_o we_o for_o we_o come_v far_o short_a of_o they_o in_o many_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o in_o obedience_n and_o therefore_o have_v more_o need_n to_o humble_v ourselves_o second_o we_o have_v among_o we_o continual_a occasion_n of_o fast_v both_o in_o 2_o fast_v public_a and_o private_a as_o i._o god_n judgement_n present_a for_o when_o have_v we_o be_v free_a from_o some_o one_o of_o these_o either_o famine_n or_o pestilence_n or_o 1_o unseasonable_a weather_n ii_o god_n judgement_n imminent_a and_o hang_v 2_o over_o our_o head_n for_o our_o profess_a enemy_n watch_v for_o our_o subversion_n and_o we_o be_v in_o danger_n to_o have_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n take_v from_o we_o in_o the_o power_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o comfort_n of_o prayer_n and_o of_o the_o sacrament_n because_o we_o do_v not_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n thereof_o iii_o we_o have_v our_o own_o corrupt_a nature_n to_o subdue_v and_o many_o sin_n to_o break_v off_o with_o 3_o particular_a judgement_n upon_o ourselves_o to_o remove_v for_o any_o one_o whereof_o 4_o we_o have_v great_a need_n to_o fast_o often_o iv._o though_o we_o have_v no_o such_o cause_n in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o yet_o the_o horrible_a sin_n that_o abound_v in_o our_o land_n be_v cause_n sufficient_a to_o bring_v we_o on_o our_o knee_n paul_n 2d_o fear_v he_o shall_v be_v humble_v at_o corinth_n in_o bewail_v many_o that_o have_v sin_v and_o shall_v not_o the_o common_a atheism_n the_o contempt_n of_o god_n word_n and_o judgement_n the_o blasphemy_n oppression_n and_o fearful_a security_n of_o this_o age_n cause_v we_o to_o wail_v and_o mourn_v v._o we_o shall_v oft_o humble_v our_o 5_o self_n for_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o for_o the_o continuance_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o sincerity_n among_o we_o and_o to_o our_o posterity_n hereby_o we_o shall_v best_o express_v zeal_n for_o god_n house_n which_o shall_v â—â—te_v we_o up_o as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o 17._o christ_n and_o of_o 10._o david_n god_n jerusalem_n shall_v be_v our_o 6._o chief_a joy_n and_o we_o must_v testify_v it_o by_o 6._o pray_v for_o the_o peace_n thereof_o christ_n pray_v and_o 13._o fast_v when_o he_o choose_v his_o apostle_n for_o the_o plant_n of_o his_o church_n much_o more_o therefore_o must_v we_o do_v it_o for_o the_o continuance_n of_o it_o four_o christ_n here_o disallow_v not_o only_o the_o affectation_n of_o praise_n in_o these_o pharisy_n but_o the_o disfigure_a of_o their_o face_n by_o a_o kind_n of_o pine_v of_o themselves_o whereby_o he_o will_v teach_v we_o that_o a_o true_a fast_o stand_v not_o in_o the_o afflict_a and_o weaken_v of_o the_o body_n now_o albeit_o few_o offend_v this_o way_n at_o this_o day_n for_o most_o be_v give_v too_o much_o to_o pamper_v the_o flesh_n yet_o here_o may_v fit_o be_v show_v what_o care_v man_n ought_v to_o have_v of_o their_o body_n body_n and_o first_o of_o all_o a_o twofold_a care_n must_v be_v avoid_v as_o well_o a_o immoderate_a care_n to_o pamper_v the_o body_n with_o meat_n and_o drink_v for_o that_o make_v the_o heart_n heavy_a and_o the_o head_n drowsy_a and_o hereby_o lust_n be_v kindle_v and_o sin_n cherish_v which_o the_o apostle_n forbid_v rom._n 13._o 14._o as_o also_o too_o little_a care_n whereby_o the_o body_n be_v pine_v and_o pull_v down_o to_o overmuch_o weakness_n which_o be_v one_o thing_n here_o reprove_v the_o care_n require_v be_v that_o moderate_a regard_n unto_o the_o body_n whereby_o it_o be_v so_o sustain_v by_o meat_n and_o drink_v that_o it_o may_v always_o become_v the_o temple_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o a_o sit_v instrument_n for_o the_o soul_n unto_o work_n of_o righteousness_n and_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n now_o he_o that_o will_v thus_o order_v his_o body_n must_v do_v two_o thing_n first_o he_o must_v observe_v perpetual_a temperance_n in_o food_n and_o raiment_n take_v that_o which_o may_v well_o suffice_v nature_n but_o not_o fulfil_v the_o lust_n thereof_o second_o if_o this_o will_v not_o serve_v to_o subdue_v the_o flesh_n but_o that_o it_o will_v still_o rebel_v against_o the_o law_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n as_o in_o some_o it_o will_v not_o then_o fast_v must_v be_v use_v in_o which_o the_o body_n be_v to_o be_v afflict_v and_o the_o soul_n humble_v for_o the_o subdue_a of_o the_o rebellious_a flesh_n but_o yet_o herein_o we_o must_v beware_v that_o we_o destroy_v not_o our_o health_n our_o strength_n or_o our_o constltution_n for_o thus_o we_o neglect_v our_o life_n which_o be_v a_o sin_n of_o murder_n wherein_o though_o few_o yet_o some_o do_v offend_v who_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n live_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o soul_n and_o gross_a sin_n otherways_o five_o here_o note_v how_o far_o the_o pharisy_n go_v in_o outward_a humiliation_n duty_n they_o be_v content_a to_o afflict_v their_o body_n even_o to_o the_o disfigure_v of_o their_o complexion_n but_o yet_o they_o will_v not_o repent_v and_o leave_v their_o sin_n no_o though_o joh._n baptist_n &_o christ_n preach_v repentance_n unto_o they_o wherein_o behold_v the_o property_n of_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n in_o god_n service_n if_o outward_a action_n and_o bodily_a exercise_n will_v serve_v the_o turn_n we_o can_v be_v content_a to_o bestow_v much_o cost_n to_o take_v great_a pain_n and_o to_o endure_v some_o affliction_n but_o yet_o still_o we_o desire_v to_o live_v in_o our_o sin_n this_o be_v evident_a in_o popery_n for_o who_o be_v more_o austere_a to_o their_o own_o body_n in_o watch_n wander_v in_o whip_v themselves_o fast_v etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o where_o be_v more_o abominable_a filthiness_n then_o among_o they_o &_o this_o make_v that_o religion_n so_o embrace_v because_o in_o dispense_n with_o sin_n for_o the_o performance_n of_o these_o bodily_a action_n it_o fit_v so_o well_o to_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n wherefore_o let_v we_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o our_o corruption_n &_o though_o we_o must_v not_o neglect_v the_o humble_v of_o the_o body_n upon_o just_a occasion_n yet_o let_v we_o principal_o look_v to_o the_o mortify_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o heart_n vers_fw-la 17._o but_o when_o thou_o fast_o anoint_v thy_o head_n and_o wash_v thy_o face_n 18._o that_o thou_o seem_v not_o unto_o man_n to_o fast_o but_o unto_o thy_o father_n which_o be_v in_o secret_a &_o thy_o father_n which_o see_v in_o secret_a will_v reward_v thou_o open_o christ_n the_o true_a doctor_n of_o his_o church_n have_v in_o the_o former_a v_o seek_v to_o reform_v the_o exercise_n of_o fast_v from_o pharisaical_a abuse_n do_v in_o these_o two_o verse_n seek_v to_o restore_v the_o same_o to_o his_o right_a use_n not_o so_o much_o intend_v to_o command_v we_o to_o fast_o as_o to_o bring_v we_o to_o the_o right_a manner_n of_o fast_v the_o exposition_n when_o thou_o fast_o etc._n etc._n it_o seem_v that_o christ_n here_o speak_v especial_o of_o a_o private_a fast_o for_o beside_o that_o he_o use_v word_n of_o the_o singular_a number_n thou_o thou_o etc._n etc._n he_o injoin_v the_o conceal_n of_o it_o from_o other_o which_o can_v be_v do_v in_o a_o public_a fast_o and_o yet_o the_o main_a thing_n here_o enjoin_v be_v the_o approbation_n of_o the_o heart_n unto_o god_n which_o must_v be_v observe_v in_o all_o religious_a fast_n as_o well_o public_a as_o private_a anoint_v thy_o head_n &_o wash_v thy_o face_n here_o christ_n allude_v to_o the_o custom_n of_o the_o jew_n who_o to_o show_v their_o cheerfulness_n use_v to_o anoint_v their_o head_n with_o sweet_a ointment_n and_o to_o wash_v their_o face_n as_o we_o may_v see_v by_o naomies_n command_n to_o 3_o ruth_n &_o by_o 10_o david_n practice_n when_o he_o perceive_v his_o child_n be_v dead_a &_o will_v testify_v that_o he_o have_v cease_v from_o mourning_n for_o it_o as_o also_o by_o the_o speech_n of_o christ_n justify_v the_o woman_n that_o anoint_v his_o foot_n with_o ointment_n my_o 46._o head_n
whereof_o hatred_n be_v the_o root_n and_o the_o rest_n be_v the_o branch_n three_o christ_n lay_v 3_o down_o the_o cause_n for_o which_o this_o persecution_n shall_v be_v inflict_v namely_o for_o my_o sake_n or_o as_o s._n luke_n say_v for_o the_o son_n of_o man_n sake_n which_o expound_v this_o phrase_n for_o righteousness_n sake_n v_o 10._o to_o wit_n for_o profess_v believe_v and_o into_o sorrow_n and_o therefore_o it_o will_v be_v good_a to_o have_v this_o rule_n engrave_v in_o our_o heart_n that_o they_o be_v bless_v which_o suffer_v for_o righteousness_n sake_n if_o therefore_o tribulation_n come_v for_o the_o defence_n of_o the_o gospel_n we_o must_v have_v recourse_n to_o this_o promise_n of_o blessedness_n and_o that_o will_v be_v our_o comfort_n more_o particular_o in_o the_o word_n of_o this_o rule_n bless_a be_v they_o etc._n etc._n â—_o christ_n will_v let_v we_o see_v that_o deadly_a hatred_n which_o the_o world_n bear_v unto_o god_n church_n for_o so_o much_o the_o word_n persecute_v import_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o hatred_n may_v be_v these_o first_o the_o church_n of_o god_n in_o the_o ministry_n 1_o of_o the_o gospel_n seek_v the_o ruin_n of_o the_o devil_n kingdom_n who_o be_v the_o prince_n of_o the_o world_n the_o devil_n therefore_o rage_v and_o inflame_v the_o heart_n of_o his_o instrument_n with_o malice_n against_o god_n church_n that_o they_o may_v persecute_v and_o quite_o destroy_v it_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a second_o god_n 2_o church_n be_v a_o peculiar_a people_n sever_v from_o the_o world_n in_o profession_n doctrine_n and_o conversation_n and_o therefore_o the_o world_n hate_v they_o joh._n 15._o 19_o and_o this_o very_a point_n may_v serve_v to_o stay_v our_o heart_n when_o we_o shall_v be_v persecute_v for_o the_o profession_n and_o embrace_v of_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o world_n do_v hate_n god_n church_n and_o will_v do_v to_o the_o end_n there_o must_v be_v enmity_n between_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o serpent_n and_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o 3._o woman_n as_o than_o he_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o flesh_n persecute_v he_o that_o be_v bear_v after_o the_o spirit_n so_o be_v it_o now_o gal._n 4._o 29._o second_o observe_v that_o this_o hatred_n of_o the_o world_n be_v not_o only_o against_o the_o member_n of_o god_n church_n but_o even_o against_o christ_n holy_a religion_n so_o christ_n say_v for_o my_o sake_n or_o for_o my_o religion_n sake_n this_o be_v to_o be_v mark_v as_o a_o most_o excellent_a argument_n to_o persuade_v our_o conscience_n that_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n which_o we_o profess_v be_v the_o true_a and_o bless_a doctrine_n of_o god_n because_o the_o wicked_a world_n do_v always_o hate_v it_o yea_o it_o hate_v we_o also_o for_o the_o gospel_n sake_n now_o if_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n of_o man_n it_o will_v fit_v their_o nature_n well_o and_o they_o will_v love_v it_o for_o the_o world_n do_v love_v his_o own_o joh._n 15._o 19_o three_o if_o they_o be_v bless_v that_o suffer_v persecution_n then_o how_o may_v any_o man_n lawful_o fly_v in_o persecution_n answer_n a_o man_n may_v fly_v in_o persecution_n with_o good_a conscience_n these_o two_o thing_n observe_v first_o that_o he_o be_v persecution_n not_o hinder_v by_o his_o particular_a call_n second_o that_o he_o have_v liberty_n offer_v by_o god_n providence_n to_o escape_v the_o hand_n of_o his_o enemy_n the_o intent_n of_o this_o verse_n be_v not_o to_o forbid_v flight_n but_o to_o comfort_v such_o as_o be_v in_o persecution_n and_o can_v escape_v for_o the_o word_n signify_v such_o persecution_n as_o be_v by_o pursuit_n and_o oppression_n which_o can_v be_v avoid_v last_o see_v they_o be_v bless_v that_o suffer_v for_o righteousness_n sake_n whether_o be_v they_o always_o curse_v that_o suffer_v deserve_o for_o a_o evil_a cause_n for_o the_o contrary_a reason_n be_v in_o contrary_n ans._n they_o be_v always_o accurse_v save_v in_o one_o case_n to_o wit_n unless_o they_o repent_v for_o their_o unrighteousness_n for_o which_o they_o be_v afflict_v but_o by_o true_a repentance_n they_o become_v bless_v the_o thief_n upon_o the_o cross_n against_o themselves_o cause_v they_o to_o spoil_v one_o a_o other_o according_a to_o the_o pprophecy_n of_o isai_n woe_n to_o thou_o that_o spoil_v and_o be_v not_o spoil_v and_o do_v wicked_o and_o
