cause_n and_o devour_v many_o private_a injury_n that_o the_o lord_n cause_n may_v be_v the_o better_o provide_v for_o and_o that_o his_o glory_n may_v go_v the_o better_a forward_o for_o we_o see_v how_o soon_o and_o how_o grievous_o we_o be_v move_v for_o our_o own_o cause_n and_o how_o soon_o we_o be_v cold_a in_o defend_v god_n cause_n this_o then_o be_v true_a christian_a zeal_n to_o deny_v our_o own_o reason_n and_o private_a commodity_n and_o especial_o to_o seek_v god_n glory_n though_o it_o be_v with_o our_o danger_n this_o will_v so_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o the_o adversary_n that_o howsoever_o for_o a_o while_o he_o think_v we_o to_o be_v choleric_a &_o mad_a man_n and_o esteem_v of_o we_o as_o revenger_n of_o our_o own_o affection_n yet_o one_o day_n he_o will_v confess_v that_o we_o do_v not_o seek_v either_o our_o own_o commodity_n or_o our_o own_o revenge_n but_o that_o whatsoever_o we_o do_v we_o do_v it_o for_o god_n glory_n and_o in_o the_o defence_n of_o a_o good_a cause_n the_o seek_v to_o revenge_v our_o private_a evil_n do_v much_o hurt_v and_o bring_v great_a injury_n to_o this_o godly_a zeal_n for_o if_o we_o can_v speak_v with_o the_o tongue_n of_o angel_n and_o can_v speak_v never_o so_o glorious_o to_o the_o delight_n of_o all_o man_n and_o have_v not_o love_n even_o to_o our_o very_a enemy_n all_o be_v nothing_o all_o be_v abomination_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o lord_n contrariwise_o if_o we_o can_v be_v content_a to_o forsake_v ourselves_o and_o to_o be_v account_v as_o nothing_o we_o shall_v be_v more_o acceptable_a to_o the_o lord_n and_o find_v less_o trouble_n to_o ourselves_o true_a it_o be_v that_o god_n his_o child_n even_o in_o their_o best_a action_n be_v trouble_v while_o they_o survey_v their_o inward_a affection_n and_o gage_v their_o heart_n before_o the_o lord_n whether_o they_o have_v not_o do_v their_o thing_n in_o self-love_n rather_o than_o for_o love_n of_o god_n whether_o in_o vain_a glory_n rather_o obedience_n than_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n without_o which_o exercise_n we_o shall_v never_o see_v whether_o our_o action_n be_v pure_a or_o whether_o they_o be_v unpure_a or_o whether_o they_o be_v mix_v whether_o they_o be_v in_o respect_n of_o god_n or_o in_o respect_n of_o ourselves_o many_o can_v rejoice_v at_o good_a thing_n in_o themselves_o and_o repine_v to_o see_v they_o in_o other_o many_o can_v be_v grieve_v with_o evil_n in_o themselves_o which_o will_v rejoice_v to_o see_v it_o in_o other_o wherefore_o we_o be_v great_o to_o suspect_v ourselves_o and_o our_o zeal_n when_o we_o be_v thus_o affect_v because_o it_o be_v a_o manifest_a token_n that_o we_o be_v not_o please_v with_o that_o which_o be_v good_a for_o god_n glory_n but_o for_o self-love_n neither_o do_v we_o repine_v for_o god_n dishonour_n but_o at_o our_o own_o discredit_n but_o we_o be_v to_o learn_v howsoever_o the_o good_a be_v do_v to_o rejoice_v and_o howsoever_o evil_n be_v commit_v to_o be_v sorrowful_a we_o see_v the_o prophet_n here_o be_v not_o grieve_v so_o much_o because_o they_o be_v his_o enemy_n as_o because_o they_o be_v the_o enemy_n of_o god_n for_o if_o he_o have_v think_v they_o to_o have_v be_v god_n child_n whatsoever_o private_a injury_n he_o have_v receive_v he_o can_v have_v swallow_v it_o up_o and_o more_o have_v rejoice_v in_o they_o as_o they_o have_v be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n than_o have_v be_v grieve_v because_o they_o injure_v he_o here_o than_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o bear_v with_o the_o infirmity_n one_o with_o another_o but_o especial_o child_n with_o the_o frailty_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n neither_o be_v we_o so_o heinous_o to_o be_v offend_v with_o the_o infirmity_n of_o the_o godly_a as_o with_o the_o presumptuous_a sin_n of_o the_o ungodly_a and_o obstinate_a true_a it_o be_v indeed_o that_o our_o zeal_n must_v cause_v we_o most_o to_o be_v grieve_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o godly_a by_o how_o much_o they_o be_v come_v near_o to_o the_o image_n of_o god_n than_o other_o howbeit_o it_o must_v always_o be_v with_o a_o fellow_n feel_n and_o pitiful_a sympathy_n towards_o they_o as_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v we_o rom._n 15._o that_o the_o same_o mind_n shall_v be_v in_o we_o which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n of_o which_o place_n we_o have_v speak_v often_o before_o wherefore_o we_o must_v make_v god_n friend_n our_o friend_n without_o any_o respect_n of_o person_n howsoever_o they_o be_v otherwise_o far_o distant_a from_o we_o either_o by_o place_n or_o a_o note_n of_o they_o that_o shall_v come_v in_o the_o last_o perilous_a time_n 2._o tim._n 3._o 3_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v void_a of_o natural_a love_n and_o affection_n and_o may_v be_v contrary_a to_o that_o exod._n 20._o honour_n thy_o father_n and_o thy_o mother_n etc._n etc._n no_o he_o mean_v nothing_o less_o but_o he_o mean_v that_o we_o shall_v so_o be_v join_v in_o natural_a love_n as_o he_o speak_v of_o himself_o who_o be_v my_o mother_n who_o be_v my_o brother_n even_o he_o that_o hear_v the_o word_n so_o that_o though_o we_o be_v never_o so_o far_o asunder_o we_o must_v love_v they_o that_o love_n god_n and_o though_o that_o we_o be_v never_o so_o near_o we_o must_v hate_v they_o that_o hate_n god_n yea_o and_o so_o far_o as_o our_o friend_n will_v pull_v we_o from_o god_n and_o from_o his_o truth_n we_o must_v shake_v off_o all_o natural_a affection_n not_o because_o they_o be_v join_v to_o we_o in_o the_o flesh_n but_o because_o by_o no_o mean_n they_o will_v be_v join_v with_o we_o in_o the_o spirit_n yet_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n we_o must_v remember_v that_o we_o do_v all_o duty_n of_o love_n and_o obedience_n child_n to_o they_o as_o in_o admonish_v they_o in_o pray_v for_o they_o and_o mourn_v for_o they_o and_o then_o if_o nothing_o will_v serve_v but_o we_o must_v either_o cleave_v to_o they_o and_o forsake_v god_n or_o forsake_v they_o and_o clâ—â—ue_v to_o god_n we_o must_v separate_v ourselves_o from_o their_o corruption_n know_v always_o that_o we_o must_v obey_v the_o first_o table_n before_o the_o second_o and_o piety_n must_v go_v before_o charity_n and_o we_o must_v serve_v god_n before_o we_o serve_v man_n and_o nature_n must_v give_v place_n to_o godliness_n the_o five_o rule_n be_v that_o we_o must_v be_v strict_a to_o ourselves_o than_o to_o any_o other_o in_o some_o thing_n zeal_n and_o we_o must_v offer_v more_o liberty_n to_o other_o than_o to_o ourselves_o if_o we_o complain_v of_o sin_n let_v we_o be_v at_o most_o defiance_n with_o our_o own_o corruption_n so_o when_o we_o fight_v against_o the_o corruption_n of_o other_o we_o shall_v not_o fight_v against_o their_o person_n but_o against_o their_o sin_n this_o be_v the_o doctrine_n which_o our_o saviour_n christ_n also_o teach_v we_o that_o if_o we_o will_v see_v well_o to_o pull_v out_o the_o more_o of_o sin_n in_o another_o man_n we_o shall_v first_o labour_v to_o take_v away_o the_o beam_n of_o sin_n in_o ourselves_o why_o call_v he_o it_o a_o beam_n in_o we_o and_o more_o in_o other_o because_o our_o own_o corruption_n be_v or_o aught_o to_o be_v far_o better_a know_v to_o we_o than_o the_o corruption_n of_o other_o man_n we_o shall_v be_v best_o acquaint_v with_o our_o own_o infirmity_n and_o know_v that_o there_o be_v in_o we_o a_o bottomless_a pit_n of_o corruption_n which_o paul_n see_v when_o he_o say_v that_o of_o all_o sinner_n he_o be_v the_o chief_a that_o be_v he_o have_v the_o great_a light_n of_o 140._o thy_o word_n be_v prove_v most_o pure_a and_o thy_o servant_n love_v it_o here_o the_o prophet_n show_v his_o love_n to_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o his_o zeal_n repeat_v in_o effect_n that_o which_o he_o say_v before_o it_o may_v seem_v strange_a why_o the_o man_n of_o god_n shall_v make_v mention_n of_o this_o so_o oft_o that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v true_a but_o we_o must_v know_v that_o he_o do_v it_o to_o strengthen_v his_o faith_n in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n and_o that_o then_o he_o may_v not_o faint_v we_o think_v not_o that_o there_o be_v such_o need_n of_o faith_n because_o we_o feel_v not_o the_o like_a temptation_n for_o they_o that_o zeal_n have_v no_o sight_n of_o their_o corruption_n know_v not_o their_o unbelief_n and_o they_o that_o feel_v not_o their_o unbelief_n feel_v not_o the_o necessity_n of_o this_o strengthen_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o as_o they_o that_o know_v not_o their_o unbelief_n know_v nothing_o so_o they_o that_o believe_v and_o see_v their_o unbelief_n know_v this_o to_o be_v necessary_a they_o then_o that_o have_v a_o true_a trial_n of_o their_o unbelief_n know_v this_o faith_n to_o be_v a_o rare_a gift_n of_o god_n so_o that_o the_o prophet_n commend_v the_o word_n of_o god_n here_o of_o experience_n for_o he_o say_v thy_o word_n be_v prove_v most_o pure_a his_o meaning_n be_v this_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o i_o be_o so_o zealous_a even_o because_o i_o love_v thy_o word_n and_o therefore_o o'lord_n i_o love_v thy_o word_n because_o i_o find_v it_o by_o proof_n to_o be_v so_o pure_a that_o we_o then_o may_v make_v this_o our_o rule_n for_o examination_n why_o be_v we_o so_o cold_a in_o zeal_n even_o because_o we_o be_v cold_a in_o the_o love_n of_o the_o word_n for_o as_o our_o love_n increase_v so_o increase_v also_o our_o delight_n and_o grief_n our_o delight_n to_o see_v the_o thing_n love_v to_o have_v happy_a proceed_n our_o grief_n to_o see_v the_o thing_n which_o we_o love_v to_o be_v despise_v this_o we_o see_v to_o be_v in_o every_o kind_n of_o love_n for_o a_o man_n that_o true_o love_v his_o wifâ—_n can_v abide_v to_o see_v his_o wife_n contemn_v and_o discredit_v nor_o the_o woman_n that_o true_o love_v her_o husband_n can_v abide_v to_o see_v he_o reject_v and_o despise_v when_o we_o love_v our_o friend_n we_o be_v grieve_v to_o see_v any_o contempt_n offer_v unto_o he_o this_o than_o we_o see_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o true_a love_n to_o rejoice_v to_o see_v the_o person_n love_v advance_a or_o the_o thing_n which_o we_o love_v esteem_v and_o grieve_v to_o see_v either_o the_o person_n or_o thing_n so_o love_v to_o be_v cast_v down_o and_o contemn_v it_o be_v a_o grief_n even_o to_o the_o heathenish_a philosopher_n to_o see_v their_o doctrine_n not_o regard_v be_v they_o so_o move_v for_o the_o small_a regard_n of_o that_o earthly_a doctrine_n which_o have_v no_o exact_a truth_n in_o it_o but_o be_v mingle_v with_o infinite_a error_n and_o untruth_n and_o shall_v not_o we_o much_o more_o be_v move_v to_o see_v the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o have_v so_o exact_a a_o truth_n and_o no_o untruth_n contemn_v and_o little_o set_v by_o wherefore_o when_o we_o have_v not_o this_o godly_a grief_n in_o we_o it_o be_v a_o manifest_a argument_n that_o our_o love_n be_v very_o cold_a for_o as_o our_o love_n be_v the_o great_a so_o undoubted_o our_o grief_n will_v be_v the_o great_a and_o so_o as_o our_o love_n be_v the_o less_o so_o will_v our_o grief_n to_o see_v the_o thing_n deface_v be_v also_o the_o less_o when_o we_o have_v much_o delight_n in_o any_o thing_n we_o be_v much_o grieve_v and_o who_o be_v more_o grieve_v to_o see_v the_o word_n of_o god_n tread_v down_o than_o the_o godly_a because_o of_o all_o other_o their_o delight_n be_v most_o in_o it_o not_o without_o cause_n than_o be_v this_o love_n commend_v unto_o we_o to_o be_v a_o token_n of_o our_o zeal_n and_o therefore_o we_o see_v psalm_n 67._o the_o church_n praise_v and_o provoke_v all_o the_o world_n to_o praise_n god_n when_o the_o word_n have_v free_a success_n such_o be_v the_o love_n of_o it_o to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n o_o let_v thy_o people_n praise_v lord_n be_v in_o it_o mean_v that_o all_o his_o joy_n his_o delight_n and_o affection_n be_v whole_o set_v on_o the_o word_n of_o god_n wherefore_o if_o there_o be_v such_o joy_n in_o have_v it_o there_o must_v needs_o be_v great_a grief_n in_o want_v it_o we_o be_v herein_o great_o to_o condemn_v ourselves_o that_o we_o be_v no_o more_o thankful_a for_o our_o unthankfulnes_n bring_v this_o stomach_n luke_o warm_a professor_n as_o they_o who_o by_o no_o mean_n he_o can_v brook_v which_o be_v a_o most_o fearful_a thing_n we_o know_v that_o the_o good_a father_n elie_n 1_o sam._n 3._o although_o otherwise_o no_o doubt_n he_o be_v the_o dear_a servant_n of_o god_n be_v grieve_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o son_n and_o mourn_v when_o the_o ark_n of_o god_n be_v take_v be_v reprove_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o he_o shall_v love_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o son_n
they_o up_o but_o when_o i_o see_v they_o begin_v to_o break_v thy_o law_n this_o pinch_v i_o at_o the_o heart_n here_o we_o see_v he_o be_v not_o very_o nice_a and_o delicate_a in_o the_o defence_n of_o his_o own_o case_n but_o when_o it_o come_v to_o god_n cause_n he_o be_v not_o zeal_n small_o move_v whereby_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o translate_v our_o zeal_n to_o god_n cause_n and_o in_o defence_n of_o his_o glory_n to_o have_v our_o heart_n blood_n wax_v hot_a so_o that_o even_o a_o godly_a anger_n with_o grief_n be_v stir_v up_o in_o us._n for_o this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o a_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a anger_n and_o profane_a and_o carnal_a anger_n holy_a anger_n be_v with_o grief_n of_o the_o sin_n and_o without_o revenge_n anger_n of_o the_o person_n carnal_a anger_n be_v with_o revenge_n of_o the_o person_n and_o without_o grief_n of_o the_o sin_n wherefore_o if_o we_o will_v have_v our_o anger_n holy_a it_o must_v be_v temper_v with_o grief_n as_o we_o do_v speak_v before_o of_o zeal_n wherein_o we_o teach_v that_o our_o anger_n shall_v feed_v upon_o the_o sin_n and_o compassion_n shall_v make_v we_o bleed_v with_o grief_n for_o the_o person_n sin_v well_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o if_o we_o will_v not_o swerve_v from_o god_n law_n we_o must_v not_o only_o be_v grieve_v for_o our_o sin_n but_o also_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o for_o this_o be_v the_o trial_n of_o a_o godly_a grief_n when_o we_o be_v first_o grieve_v with_o our_o own_o and_o then_o be_v grieve_v with_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o because_o true_a grief_n begin_v first_o in_o ourselves_o and_o from_o ourselves_o it_o pass_v true_o unto_o other_o on_o the_o contrary_a we_o much_o bewray_v our_o hypocrisy_n if_o we_o first_o wade_v upon_o other_o man_n hypocrisy_n sin_n and_o suffer_v our_o own_o to_o grow_v and_o if_o we_o can_v fret_v angry_o at_o a_o little_a sin_n in_o another_o and_o can_v be_v no_o whit_n displease_v with_o a_o great_a sin_n in_o ourselves_o this_o be_v a_o preposterous_a grief_n to_o weep_v to_o sorrow_n to_o sigh_v for_o sin_n in_o other_o and_o not_o to_o weep_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o our_o own_o soul_n and_o this_o be_v want_n of_o the_o true_a love_n of_o god_n word_n to_o be_v grieve_v when_o we_o ourselves_o do_v sin_n and_o to_o be_v nothing_o grieve_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o note_n wherefore_o if_o we_o be_v in_o place_n where_o we_o want_v time_n and_o opportunity_n open_o to_o rebuke_v sin_n and_o reform_v it_o at_o the_o least_o let_v we_o labour_n to_o be_v grieve_v which_o grief_n must_v sit_v so_o near_o our_o heart_n that_o when_o any_o time_n or_o opportunity_n serve_v we_o cease_v not_o nor_o stay_v to_o utter_v it_o with_o our_o mouth_n for_o they_o that_o be_v thorough_o grieve_v at_o the_o heart_n will_v at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o burn_v until_o they_o have_v utter_v it_o with_o their_o mouth_n wherefore_o we_o must_v labour_v whatsoever_o sin_n we_o mislike_v in_o judgement_n to_o be_v grieve_v for_o the_o same_o in_o affection_n for_o many_o can_v mislike_v sin_n and_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n but_o few_o be_v grieve_v for_o sin_n for_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a matter_n if_o that_o as_o they_o be_v subordinate_v and_o join_v with_o spiritual_a mean_n they_o may_v be_v good_a &_o without_o they_o they_o will_v not_o prevail_v because_o they_o want_v the_o help_n of_o prayer_n and_o fast_v it_o be_v too_o great_a security_n to_o rest_v in_o the_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o defence_n as_o of_o wisdom_n policy_n multitude_n of_o arm_n furniture_n of_o weapon_n etc._n etc._n and_o to_o boast_v in_o these_o because_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a &_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o humble_a so_o they_o the_o neglect_n of_o this_o exercise_n of_o humble_v ourselves_o will_v declare_v our_o security_n &_o security_n show_v our_o pride_n &_o do_v bewray_v our_o infidelity_n neither_o be_v the_o end_n of_o prayer_n or_o fast_v the_o neglect_n of_o the_o ordinary_a mean_n but_o the_o pull_v away_o of_o our_o confidence_n in_o they_o that_o we_o may_v rest_v in_o the_o only_a power_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n which_o how_o necessary_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v plain_o appear_v in_o the_o two_o great_a overthrow_n which_o the_o israelite_n have_v of_o the_o beniamite_n whereas_o they_o be_v more_o in_o number_n better_o appoint_v in_o the_o defence_n of_o a_o good_a cause_n be_v notwithstanding_o constrain_v twice_o to_o retire_v with_o great_a slaughter_n until_o at_o the_o last_o by_o cast_v off_o all_o confidence_n in_o themselves_o by_o prayer_n and_o fast_v acknowledge_v themselves_o to_o be_v nothing_o they_o obtain_v victory_n for_o than_o shall_v corporal_a mean_n most_o prevail_a when_o all_o the_o spiritual_a which_o god_n command_v have_v be_v true_o use_v and_o they_o be_v fit_a to_o use_v the_o outward_a mean_n of_o defence_n which_o have_v learned_a to_o convey_v their_o faith_n from_o they_o by_o the_o public_a exercise_n of_o humiliation_n unto_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n if_o with_o fast_v and_o prayer_n we_o can_v wrestle_v with_o the_o archangel_n of_o god_n then_o shall_v we_o never_o be_v afraid_a of_o duke_n esau_n nor_o all_o his_o edomite_n if_o we_o be_v israelite_n to_o prevail_v with_o god_n we_o can_v be_v but_o jacob_n to_o prevail_v with_o man_n what_o shall_v i_o say_v of_o our_o forefather_n which_o by_o this_o faith_n have_v obtain_v their_o victory_n the_o time_n
make_v conscience_n of_o sin_n be_v know_v the_o lord_n visit_v we_o with_o private_a and_o public_a mean_n that_o as_o the_o wicked_a shall_v be_v without_o all_o hope_n ease_n or_o end_v torment_v in_o hell_n so_o these_o in_o mercy_n and_o measure_n shall_v have_v their_o heart_n break_v which_o because_o they_o will_v not_o do_v by_o the_o love_a invocate_a and_o invite_v of_o they_o by_o the_o lord_n therefore_o it_o be_v do_v by_o some_o cross_n second_o it_o respect_v the_o regenerate_v either_o to_o continue_v they_o in_o their_o good_a estate_n or_o to_o keep_v they_o from_o some_o gross_a sin_n for_o god_n his_o child_n do_v sometime_o fall_v and_o always_o may_v fall_v if_o god_n keep_v they_o not_o because_o david_n and_o manasses_n have_v sin_v god_n send_v they_o the_o cross_n that_o they_o may_v not_o forget_v he_o now_o because_o the_o same_o may_v be_v in_o we_o if_o the_o lord_n will_v pour_v out_o his_o wrath_n upon_o the_o wicked_a sure_o he_o will_v not_o suffer_v his_o own_o child_n to_o be_v uncontrolled_a we_o must_v not_o then_o as_o some_o be_v wont_a to_o do_v say_v do_v not_o david_n sin_n make_v you_o so_o much_o at_o i_o be_v not_o david_n a_o great_a sinner_n and_o yet_o save_v it_o be_v well_o indeed_o if_o we_o will_v bind_v david_n sin_n with_o david_n his_o repentance_n or_o if_o we_o consider_v how_o the_o sun_n be_v turn_v into_o darkness_n &_o the_o moon_n into_o blood_n in_o his_o kingdom_n if_o we_o shall_v see_v the_o pillar_n of_o god_n judgement_n and_o vapour_n of_o god_n his_o wrath_n against_o he_o among_o his_o own_o how_o his_o son_n rebel_v they_o that_o will_v be_v counsellor_n become_v traitor_n and_o how_o the_o wicked_a caitiff_n insult_v over_o he_o we_o will_v sure_o know_v that_o it_o do_v little_o help_v we_o to_o reckon_v up_o david_n his_o sin_v this_o do_v god_n to_o sow_v the_o lip_n of_o the_o wicked_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o say_v that_o god_n do_v spare_v and_o punish_v not_o sin_n in_o he_o and_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o dream_v of_o escape_n when_o his_o own_o servant_n be_v so_o punish_v and_o although_o god_n his_o child_n present_o fall_v not_o but_o be_v ready_a to_o fall_v he_o wrap_v they_o often_o in_o the_o cross_n of_o the_o wicked_a not_o so_o much_o to_o punish_v any_o sin_n present_a but_o to_o prevent_v in_o they_o some_o sin_n to_o come_v that_o thereby_o take_v away_o the_o occasion_n of_o sin_v he_o may_v humble_v they_o before_o they_o fall_v again_o albeit_o they_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o gross_a sin_n yet_o because_o they_o be_v oft_o puff_v up_o with_o privy_a pride_n dead_a unmerciful_a dull_a forsake_v their_o first_o love_n sometime_o neither_o hot_a nor_o cold_a luke_o warm_a without_o zeal_n brief_o in_o that_o they_o be_v not_o as_o god_n his_o child_n shall_v be_v or_o as_o they_o themselves_o sometime_o and_o before_o have_v be_v the_o lord_n in_o wisdom_n correct_v these_o want_n and_o infirmity_n that_o from_o infirmity_n they_o shall_v not_o burst_v out_o into_o enormity_n from_o sin_v of_o ignorance_n they_o shall_v not_o sin_v against_o conscience_n and_o from_o secret_a sin_n that_o they_o commit_v not_o presumptuous_a sin_n for_o this_o cause_n revel_v 3._o the_o lord_n send_v plague_n on_o the_o church_n of_o laodicea_n not_o so_o much_o for_o gross_a and_o notorious_a sin_n but_o because_o they_o be_v not_o humble_v and_o zealous_a enough_o but_o such_o as_o may_v more_o easy_o have_v fall_v into_o deep_a enormity_n hereafter_o if_o man_n use_v to_o try_v gold_n seven_o time_n in_o the_o furnace_n not_o for_o any_o mass_n of_o dross_n in_o it_o but_o to_o prove_v it_o how_o much_o more_o have_v the_o lord_n need_v to_o try_v our_o faith_n although_o we_o be_v not_o give_v to_o any_o great_a and_o notable_a crime_n for_o as_o there_o may_v be_v two_o use_n in_o the_o try_v of_o gold_n the_o one_o to_o purge_v it_o from_o dross_n the_o other_o to_o fine_a it_o the_o more_o so_o there_o be_v two_o use_n of_o correction_n the_o one_o to_o punish_v sin_n the_o other_o to_o try_v their_o faith_n and_o although_o the_o lord_n more_o principal_o do_v not_o punish_v sin_n but_o rather_o secondary_o chief_o try_v the_o patience_n of_o his_o child_n yet_o when_o man_n can_v accuse_v we_o neither_o we_o can_v accuse_v ourselves_o yet_o the_o lord_n will_v purge_v we_o from_o some_o secret_a corruption_n which_o may_v breed_v a_o sin_n in_o time_n to_o come_v and_o hereupon_o it_o come_v that_o privy_a pride_n secret_a self-love_n close_a covetousness_n hide_a hypocrisy_n and_o such_o like_a be_v count_v sin_n of_o god_n his_o child_n though_o of_o worldling_n they_o be_v think_v good_a virtue_n but_o some_o will_v say_v be_v this_o the_o truth_n you_o stick_v to_o be_v this_o the_o gospel_n which_o you_o profess_v see_v what_o hurliburly_n see_v how_o many_o opinion_n there_o be_v what_o a_o company_n of_o religion_n be_v start_v up_o see_v what_o deny_v of_o the_o faith_n what_o gross_a sin_n be_v spring_v up_o see_v what_o death_n plague_n and_o war_n be_v accompany_v with_o it_o sure_o it_o seem_v that_o this_o be_v not_o the_o gospel_n before_o all_o thing_n be_v in_o better_a case_n no_o such_o disturbance_n in_o religion_n no_o such_o noise_n of_o notorious_a sin_n no_o such_o turmoiling_n on_o every_o side_n all_o thing_n be_v at_o good_a quiet_n but_o now_o we_o have_v more_o trouble_n than_o ever_o in_o former_a time_n be_v hear_v of_o the_o wicked_a do_v not_o only_o break_v their_o neck_n at_o this_o block_n but_o god_n his_o own_o child_n have_v dangerous_o stumble_v at_o it_o for_o when_o job_n david_n jeremiah_n without_o god_n his_o spirit_n behold_v the_o prosperity_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o the_o adversity_n of_o the_o godly_a they_o confess_v their_o foot_n have_v almost_o slip_v save_v that_o they_o dare_v not_o condemn_v the_o generation_n of_o god_n his_o child_n to_o remedy_v this_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v that_o when_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n do_v most_o appear_v then_o will_v the_o lord_n send_v great_a judgement_n for_o the_o contempt_n of_o his_o gospel_n in_o the_o wicked_a and_o for_o the_o neglect_n of_o it_o in_o the_o godly_a now_o this_o be_v foretell_v that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v offend_v when_o it_o come_v &_o this_o use_n do_v christ_n teach_v we_o to_o make_v of_o it_o these_o thing_n have_v i_o tell_v you_o before_o that_o when_o they_o come_v to_o pass_v etc._n etc._n for_o to_o god_n his_o child_n be_v but_o babe_n in_o christ_n this_o be_v a_o great_a temptation_n and_o to_o come_v to_o our_o day_n do_v it_o not_o trouble_v man_n much_o that_o there_o be_v so_o many_o unlearned_a minister_n of_o learned_a minister_n that_o there_o be_v so_o many_o ungodly_a man_n that_o they_o see_v such_o oppress_a magistrate_n such_o rebellious_a people_n such_o careless_a governor_n that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o height_n of_o subtlety_n in_o cover_v and_o cloak_v sin_n where_o be_v most_o knowledge_n such_o run_v to_o sin_n where_o be_v most_o preach_v and_o where_o the_o gospel_n be_v receive_v that_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o sect_n and_o heresy_n when_o they_o shall_v see_v the_o papist_n ready_a to_o outface_v the_o gospel_n what_o may_v a_o man_n do_v now_o or_o how_o may_v he_o stay_v himself_o if_o the_o lord_n shall_v leave_v he_o sure_o god_n have_v foretell_v it_o even_o as_o the_o sun_n then_o shine_v bright_a the_o moon_n give_v light_n the_o clear_a air_n be_v token_n of_o god_n his_o love_n so_o much_o more_o the_o word_n and_o as_o these_o be_v darken_a &_o obscure_a show_n god_n his_o wrath_n so_o the_o word_n obscure_v do_v testify_v his_o wrath_n much_o more_o yea_o if_o dearth_n plague_n famine_n or_o such_o like_a come_v we_o must_v be_v forewarn_v of_o they_o and_o our_o saviour_n christ_n when_o man_n ask_v he_o sign_n he_o tell_v they_o of_o many_o and_o mat._n 24._o that_o there_o shall_v be_v such_o wonder_n in_o the_o heaven_n in_o the_o earth_n and_o in_o the_o sea_n that_o even_o the_o very_a elect_v shall_v be_v confound_v almost_o now_o if_o christ_n have_v not_o forewarn_v these_o thing_n in_o the_o equity_n of_o his_o judgement_n we_o may_v indeed_o have_v have_v some_o occasion_n of_o offence_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v matth._n 11._o bless_a be_v they_o that_o be_v not_o offend_v in_o i_o because_o such_o confusion_n shall_v be_v that_o man_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o lay_v the_o cause_n of_o these_o thing_n on_o the_o gospel_n and_o on_o the_o word_n and_o therefore_o bless_a be_v they_o that_o be_v forewarn_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o know_v why_o they_o come_v if_o the_o jew_n will_v not_o
of_o god_n judgement_n 3._o that_o we_o must_v wise_o discern_v between_o the_o true_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n which_o cause_v repentance_n not_o to_o be_v repent_v of_o and_o that_o worldly_a sorrow_n which_o cause_v death_n for_o godly_a sorrow_n soften_v the_o hart_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o word_n but_o that_o worldly_a sorrow_n cause_v man_n to_o kick_v and_o spurn_v against_o the_o word_n to_o the_o further_o harden_v of_o their_o heart_n 4._o that_o many_o be_v gall_v and_o prick_v with_o poverty_n sickness_n and_o other_o affliction_n but_o few_o with_o their_o sin_n which_o for_o sin_n must_v be_v continue_v and_o daily_o renew_v we_o must_v be_v humble_v with_o continual_a sorrow_n that_o we_o may_v be_v refresh_v with_o daily_a comfort_n in_o christ._n and_o thus_o our_o heart_n be_v to_o labour_v that_o it_o be_v not_o quench_v now_o the_o apostle_n upon_o great_a &_o weighty_a consideration_n do_v here_o deliver_v this_o precept_n for_o first_o of_o all_o though_o all_o those_o be_v worthy_o and_o just_o condemn_v that_o never_o taste_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n yet_o as_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v a_o more_o just_a and_o fearful_a to_o receive_v no_o good_a grace_n at_o god_n hand_n nay_o we_o do_v not_o esteem_v god_n grace_n when_o we_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n to_o teach_v we_o to_o set_v a_o due_a price_n upon_o they_o spirit_n for_o speak_v of_o the_o law_n or_o of_o the_o gospel_n of_o sin_n or_o of_o righteousness_n speak_v of_o christ_n or_o of_o our_o redemption_n and_o justification_n by_o he_o yea_o speak_v of_o that_o huge_a and_o heavy_a weight_n of_o glory_n wherewith_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n shall_v be_v crown_v all_o this_o move_v not_o we_o be_v little_o affect_v therewith_o unless_o god_n give_v we_o of_o his_o good_a spirit_n to_o profit_v by_o the_o same_o the_o apostle_n therefore_o with_o good_a reason_n give_v this_o precept_n and_o we_o for_o many_o great_a cause_n be_v to_o listen_v unto_o it_o least_o by_o any_o mean_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v quench_v in_o we_o &_o so_o we_o deprive_v ourselves_o of_o all_o these_o fruit_n now_o whereas_o the_o apostle_n say_v quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n it_o may_v appear_v that_o spirit_n he_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o have_v already_o receive_v the_o spirit_n for_o as_o the_o fire_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v quench_v where_o it_o be_v not_o so_o they_o can_v be_v say_v to_o quench_v or_o lose_v the_o spirit_n which_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o receive_v it_o then_o know_v that_o this_o precept_n do_v proper_o belong_v to_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o they_o especil_o be_v to_o make_v a_o special_a use_n of_o it_o for_o the_o other_o it_o can_v profit_v they_o unless_o that_o as_o the_o seed_n lie_v in_o the_o ground_n a_o long_a time_n do_v afterward_o bud_v and_o become_v fruitful_a so_o this_o continue_v in_o their_o mind_n till_o they_o have_v taste_v in_o some_o good_a sort_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o then_o breed_v in_o they_o some_o carefulness_n that_o they_o do_v not_o quench_v it_o well_o then_o to_o they_o that_o have_v feel_v and_o find_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o to_o they_o say_v s._n paul_n in_o this_o place_n take_v heed_n that_o you_o quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o this_o if_o we_o do_v somewhat_o serious_o consider_v these_o two_o question_n will_v offer_v themselves_o and_o soon_o arise_v in_o spirit_n our_o mind_n first_o how_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no._n second_o if_o we_o have_v it_o whether_o it_o may_v be_v lose_v again_o or_o no_o which_o if_o they_o be_v well_o and_o sufficient_o answer_v they_o will_v doubtless_o give_v great_a force_n unto_o this_o precept_n for_o the_o first_o then_o if_o we_o will_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n or_o no_o we_o must_v sure_o understand_v that_o as_o he_o know_v best_o that_o he_o have_v life_n which_o feel_v it_o in_o himself_o so_o he_o best_a know_v whether_o he_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o feel_v the_o spirit_n work_v in_o he_o and_o if_o we_o will_v further_o know_v this_o by_o the_o peculiar_a work_n and_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n then_o let_v we_o mark_v these_o first_o of_o all_o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o man_n but_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n if_o nothing_o it_o be_v from_o above_o it_o be_v above_o nature_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n do_v set_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n against_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o world_n when_o he_o say_v we_o have_v

that_o they_o can_v devise_v but_o for_o these_o what_o remedy_n be_v there_o sure_o even_o first_o to_o consider_v that_o their_o affliction_n be_v send_v from_o god_n second_o to_o inquire_v at_o his_o word_n the_o cause_n that_o move_v the_o lord_n to_o lay_v they_o upon_o they_o the_o lord_n no_o doubt_n will_v answer_v they_o out_o of_o his_o word_n that_o it_o be_v sin_n three_o the_o end_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v set_v down_o which_o be_v to_o humble_a us._n now_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v send_v it_o that_o sin_n be_v the_o cause_n thereof_o and_o we_o be_v true_o humble_v because_o of_o our_o sin_n then_o may_v we_o be_v bold_a to_o seek_v to_o the_o water_n of_o comfort_n and_o drink_v free_o of_o the_o water_n of_o life_n which_o our_o saviour_n have_v promise_v to_o all_o that_o come_v unto_o he_o to_o be_v refresh_v they_o which_o be_v instruct_v both_o whence_o affliction_n come_v and_o wherefore_o and_o to_o what_o end_n they_o common_o be_v very_o sorry_a and_o do_v earnest_o repent_v they_o and_o although_o they_o be_v something_o trouble_v because_o before_o they_o be_v never_o sufficient_o humble_v yet_o be_v they_o not_o dismay_v they_o have_v the_o stay_n in_o themselves_o they_o hold_v it_o as_o most_o certain_a that_o their_o god_n as_o he_o be_v all_o wisdom_n and_o therefore_o know_v all_o thing_n that_o be_v best_o so_o he_o be_v infinite_a in_o mercy_n and_o put_v upon_o he_o the_o affection_n of_o a_o father_n to_o those_o that_o fear_v he_o and_o give_v nothing_o to_o his_o child_n but_o those_o thing_n which_o may_v be_v best_a for_o they_o and_o therefore_o they_o know_v he_o scourge_v as_o a_o father_n or_o beat_v as_o a_o schoolmaster_n and_o no_o tender_a father_n or_o wise_a schoolmaster_n will_v correct_v the_o child_n with_o beat_v when_o word_n may_v serve_v so_o that_o they_o know_v the_o lord_n be_v even_o to_o take_v his_o rod_n in_o hand_n before_o he_o can_v renew_v they_o and_o hereby_o he_o mean_v to_o fine_v they_o that_o they_o may_v come_v out_o of_o affliction_n as_o fine_a gold_n who_o the_o lord_n will_v make_v vessel_n to_o eternal_a glory_n that_o which_o be_v set_v down_o here_o of_o the_o affliction_n of_o josephs_n brethren_n we_o may_v term_v more_o right_o by_o the_o name_n of_o scare_v than_o of_o punishment_n and_o affliction_n for_o they_o be_v but_o put_v in_o fear_n only_o and_o though_o they_o be_v put_v in_o ward_n it_o be_v but_o for_o a_o very_a small_a time_n and_o we_o read_v of_o no_o correction_n that_o be_v lay_v upon_o they_o no_o it_o appear_v by_o josephs_n affection_n to_o they_o who_o can_v not_o abstain_v but_o be_v fain_o often_o to_o burst_v forth_o into_o tear_n when_o he_o have_v go_v from_o they_o that_o he_o so_o tender_v they_o as_o his_o brethren_n when_o by_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n he_o make_v a_o show_n as_o though_o he_o will_v deal_v very_o hardly_o with_o they_o yet_o this_o fear_v and_o sear_v of_o they_o it_o humble_v they_o and_o drive_v they_o to_o confess_v and_o to_o say_v one_o to_o another_o we_o have_v utter_o sin_v against_o our_o brother_n in_o that_o we_o see_v the_o anguish_n of_o his_o soul_n when_o he_o beseech_v we_o and_o we_o will_v not_o hear_v he_o therefore_o be_v this_o trouble_n come_v upon_o us._n and_o here_o we_o see_v how_o they_o confess_v their_o fault_n when_o they_o be_v scare_v before_o they_o â—eit_v any_o punishment_n upon_o they_o which_o may_v be_v a_o argument_n that_o it_o be_v a_o true_a humble_v from_o the_o heart_n with_o a_o grief_n not_o of_o the_o punishment_n for_o there_o be_v yet_o none_o lay_v upon_o they_o but_o of_o their_o sin_n which_o then_o they_o bring_v into_o their_o remembrance_n and_o it_o lay_v as_o a_o burden_n upon_o their_o conscience_n that_o they_o even_o see_v god_n judgement_n ready_a to_o give_v sentence_n of_o condemnation_n against_o they_o except_o they_o prevent_v he_o by_o speedy_a repentance_n whereas_o if_o it_o have_v be_v do_v and_o have_v be_v in_o time_n of_o affliction_n that_o they_o have_v be_v so_o humble_v it_o have_v be_v hard_a to_o say_v whether_o it_o have_v be_v do_v true_o or_o dissemble_o with_o a_o feel_n of_o their_o sin_n or_o the_o greatness_n of_o their_o grief_n which_o they_o sustain_v as_o be_v say_v before_o thus_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o the_o lord_n god_n do_v not_o only_o to_o humble_v we_o before_o his_o majesty_n set_v forth_o the_o law_n unto_o we_o and_o preach_v unto_o we_o the_o threaten_n thereof_o and_o then_o if_o they_o take_v no_o place_n among_o we_o he_o lay_v his_o rod_n and_o scourge_n upon_o our_o back_n but_o common_o of_o his_o infinite_a wisdom_n and_o mercy_n before_o he_o afflict_v between_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o law_n and_o affliction_n he_o scare_v we_o he_o shake_v the_o rod_n of_o correction_n over_o we_o and_o before_o he_o punish_v he_o show_v token_n of_o displeasure_n and_o that_o we_o have_v provoke_v he_o to_o anger_n wherefore_o we_o have_v experience_n of_o his_o great_a mercy_n in_o this_o land_n among_o we_o at_o this_o day_n we_o have_v have_v the_o law_n preach_v unto_o we_o lo_o these_o twenty_o year_n but_o where_o be_v any_o humble_v any_o confess_v of_o sin_n before_o the_o lord_n nay_o we_o neglect_v the_o word_n and_o have_v it_o in_o contempt_n among_o we_o we_o even_o loath_a the_o bread_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o be_v of_o power_n to_o work_v salvation_n to_o all_o that_o by_o faith_n shall_v feed_v thereon_o we_o prefer_v our_o pleasure_n before_o the_o keep_n of_o the_o lord_n sabbath_n we_o esteem_v of_o the_o lord_n himself_o who_o have_v make_v we_o of_o nothing_o buy_v we_o with_o a_o price_n even_o his_o own_o blood_n and_o who_o one_o day_n will_v call_v all_o before_o he_o to_o judgement_n as_o nothing_o we_o come_v to_o pray_v to_o he_o with_o less_o reverence_n than_o to_o miserable_a man_n our_o lip_n say_v some_o prayer_n unto_o god_n but_o our_o heart_n have_v some_o other_o god_n namely_o our_o belly_n or_o our_o good_n wherein_o we_o whole_o delight_v and_o in_o who_o we_o only_o trust_v and_o indeed_o it_o be_v lamentable_a that_o prayer_n be_v say_v of_o a_o number_n to_o keep_v a_o custom_n and_o a_o fashion_n even_o mock_v of_o god_n and_o deceive_a our_o own_o soul_n will_v the_o lord_n suffer_v this_o be_v the_o sacrifice_n acceptable_a that_o come_v not_o from_o a_o humble_a and_o prepare_v heart_n no_o he_o will_v not_o accept_v it_o all_o these_o abomination_n be_v in_o the_o land_n and_o may_v not_o the_o lord_n have_v good_a cause_n to_o visit_v among_o we_o nay_o to_o come_v even_o in_o judgement_n against_o we_o and_o yet_o see_v the_o unspeakable_a mercy_n and_o the_o long_a suffering_n and_o the_o exceed_a love_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o who_o have_v for_o bear_v his_o rod_n thus_o long_o and_o yet_o spy_v we_o not_o but_o before_o his_o besom_n of_o destruction_n shall_v come_v to_o sweep_v we_o away_o he_o show_v we_o foretoken_n of_o his_o displeasure_n he_o now_o begin_v to_o scare_v we_o to_o see_v if_o yet_o by_o this_o mean_v he_o may_v humble_v we_o and_o so_o preserve_v we_o from_o those_o plague_n and_o judgement_n which_o he_o be_v present_o purpose_v to_o bring_v upon_o all_o the_o ungodly_a of_o the_o earth_n but_o how_o do_v the_o lord_n scare_v we_o and_o what_o whip_n be_v they_o wherewith_o he_o mean_v to_o scourge_v they_o be_v many_o and_o we_o can_v see_v they_o all_o
but_o there_o be_v three_o especial_a plague_n which_o the_o lord_n be_v ready_a to_o pour_v upon_o we_o and_o three_o manner_n of_o way_n there_o be_v whereby_o the_o lord_n scare_v we_o which_o be_v very_o plain_a and_o manifest_a and_o almost_o every_o child_n may_v perceive_v he_o scare_v we_o by_o fear_n of_o dearâ—â—_n and_o famine_n whereof_o this_o unseasonable_a weather_n these_o immoderate_a water_n which_o we_o have_v have_v can_v but_o be_v fearful_a token_n he_o scare_v we_o by_o token_n of_o a_o pestilence_n to_o come_v among_o we_o which_o be_v already_o lay_v upon_o the_o neck_n of_o many_o of_o our_o brethren_n in_o this_o land_n not_o only_o far_o off_o as_o at_o yarmouth_n at_o norwich_n and_o diverse_a other_o place_n which_o we_o know_v not_o but_o also_o in_o this_o shire_n at_o ely_n we_o know_v not_o how_o night_n it_o be_v our_o own_o door_n a_o three_o way_n there_o be_v whereby_o he_o scare_v we_o and_o that_o be_v more_o fearful_a than_o all_o these_o and_o that_o be_v by_o the_o secret_a device_n of_o our_o enemy_n who_o the_o lord_n have_v stir_v up_o even_o to_o threaten_v a_o separate_n of_o we_o from_o his_o majesty_n and_o from_o his_o word_n and_o the_o continuance_n of_o his_o government_n by_o his_o word_n among_o we_o and_o a_o captivity_n a_o subdue_a of_o we_o to_o false_a god_n and_o a_o ignorance_n of_o all_o the_o law_n and_o commandment_n of_o our_o good_a god_n who_o only_o to_o serve_v be_v perfect_a felicity_n and_o this_o be_v a_o sore_o scare_v the_o other_o be_v sore_o for_o the_o time_n but_o this_o punishment_n if_o it_o come_v it_o shall_v end_v at_o no_o time_n we_o may_v partly_o see_v it_o i_o will_v to_o god_n we_o can_v as_o well_o consider_v of_o it_o and_o even_o yet_o at_o the_o length_n before_o we_o feel_v the_o rod_n as_o do_v the_o brethren_n of_o joseph_n acknowledge_v our_o sin_n before_o the_o lord_n who_o we_o have_v provoke_v to_o wrath_n humble_a ourselves_o before_o he_o and_o call_v for_o mercy_n and_o even_o by_o prayer_n stand_v in_o the_o gap_n and_o prevent_v the_o punishment_n prepare_v for_o us._n now_o let_v we_o herein_o learn_v one_o point_n of_o wisdom_n more_o which_o be_v if_o god_n sometime_o shall_v threaten_v we_o by_o scare_v and_o shall_v sit_v he_o down_o again_o a_o little_a and_o it_o fall_v not_o out_o present_o that_o we_o be_v punish_v let_v we_o not_o thereby_o get_v occasion_n to_o flatter_v and_o deceive_v ourselves_o as_o though_o god_n rod_n be_v then_o clean_o overpast_v as_o a_o storm_n carry_v away_o with_o a_o cloud_n but_o let_v we_o careful_o consider_v what_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o move_v he_o to_o threaten_v we_o and_o no_o doubt_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o even_o they_o be_v cause_n sufficient_a to_o provoke_v he_o to_o plague_v we_o and_o if_o we_o will_v not_o call_v they_o to_o mind_n and_o confess_v they_o while_o we_o have_v respite_n give_v we_o they_o will_v never_o lin_v yell_v and_o cry_v in_o the_o care_n of_o the_o just_a and_o righteous_a judge_n for_o whole_a vessel_n full_a of_o vengeance_n to_o consume_v we_o utter_o now_o as_o for_o the_o godly_a and_o those_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n and_o have_v their_o heart_n upright_o before_o he_o they_o be_v as_o it_o be_v forewarn_v and_o full_o prepare_v whatsoever_o plague_n come_v they_o know_v that_o nothing_o shall_v come_v nigh_o they_o to_o hurt_v they_o and_o they_o can_v see_v a_o glimmer_n of_o the_o thing_n a_o great_a way_n off_o and_o the_o lord_n tell_v they_o before_o hand_n what_o he_o be_v mind_v to_o do_v he_o tell_v noah_n before_o hand_n of_o the_o great_a judgement_n of_o water_n when_o the_o whole_a world_n be_v drown_v for_o sin_n he_o tell_v lot_n how_o he_o be_v mind_v to_o burn_v and_o boil_v up_o the_o filth_n of_o sodom_n he_o tell_v moses_n before_o how_o he_o will_v destroy_v the_o egyptian_n yea_o and_o the_o prophet_n david_n speak_v true_o the_o lord_n reveal_v his_o secret_n to_o they_o that_o fear_v he_o and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o dear_a child_n of_o god_n when_o as_o nothing_o will_v serve_v they_o must_v then_o needs_o look_v for_o affliction_n and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o affliction_n must_v needs_o come_v let_v we_o yet_o pray_v to_o god_n rather_o to_o lay_v any_o plague_n upon_o we_o than_o the_o famine_n of_o his_o word_n and_o the_o subjection_n to_o the_o enemy_n of_o his_o grace_n yea_o let_v we_o hearty_o confess_v our_o sin_n before_o god_n as_o david_n do_v at_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o lord_n by_o his_o prophet_n and_o if_o the_o lord_n may_v put_v we_o in_o choice_n if_o it_o seem_v good_a unto_o his_o majesty_n whether_o we_o will_v fly_v before_o our_o enemy_n or_o whether_o we_o will_v wish_v or_o choose_v rather_o a_o dearth_n in_o the_o land_n or_o a_o pestilence_n let_v we_o from_o our_o heart_n beseech_v the_o lord_n god_n that_o we_o may_v rather_o fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o lord_n minister_n whereas_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v obey_v they_o that_o have_v the_o oversight_n over_o you_o etc._n etc._n it_o be_v mean_v of_o the_o pastor_n of_o the_o church_n of_o the_o dispenser_n of_o the_o holy_a word_n of_o god_n for_o there_o be_v place_v over_o the_o church_n of_o god_n both_o pastor_n doctor_n god_n and_o elder_n which_o be_v certain_a
who_o although_o we_o have_v the_o general_a rule_n of_o our_o do_n yet_o fail_v in_o the_o particular_a practice_n thereof_o i_o believe_v he_o confess_v that_o all_o wisdom_n be_v in_o god_n word_n and_o this_o although_o we_o confess_v yet_o in_o practice_n we_o often_o think_v that_o some_o wisdom_n of_o man_n must_v be_v add_v thereto_o but_o he_o confess_v that_o all_o wisdom_n be_v in_o the_o word_n and_o that_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v man_n perfect_a vers._n 67._o before_o i_o be_v afflict_v i_o go_v astray_o but_o now_o i_o keep_v thy_o word_n this_o be_v another_o to_o by_o affliction_n and_o which_o will_v bring_v affliction_n upon_o us._n if_o he_o will_v hear_v when_o we_o humble_o cry_v in_o affliction_n how_o much_o more_o if_o we_o make_v our_o humble_a suit_n in_o our_o prosperity_n affliction_n come_v because_o we_o will_v not_o judge_v ourselves_o than_o it_o be_v a_o blessing_n to_o have_v the_o word_n to_o judge_v we_o and_o the_o preacher_n to_o rebuke_v we_o that_o our_o wanton_a lust_n may_v be_v correct_v then_o we_o be_v fond_a if_o we_o will_v be_v weary_a of_o the_o word_n or_o of_o daily_a admonition_n if_o the_o word_n help_v in_o affliction_n how_o much_o more_o in_o prosperity_n if_o we_o tend_v thereto_o who_o god_n love_v he_o correct_v and_o we_o shall_v know_v that_o god_n love_v we_o when_o we_o be_v correct_v if_o we_o be_v make_v better_a by_o it_o for_o in_o itself_o it_o be_v a_o punishment_n of_o sin_n but_o when_o in_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v sanctify_v to_o we_o so_o that_o it_o make_v we_o die_v to_o sin_n and_o that_o sin_n be_v loathsome_a to_o we_o then_o be_v it_o a_o token_n of_o god_n favour_n for_o afflction_n be_v common_a to_o all_o eccles._n 9_o but_o when_o we_o profit_v by_o they_o then_o be_v they_o good_a to_o us._n for_o if_o good_a thing_n become_v hurtful_a if_o they_o be_v not_o sanctify_v much_o more_o shall_v affliction_n if_o they_o be_v not_o sanctify_v in_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n to_o make_v we_o examine_v our_o way_n and_o see_v our_o sin_n and_o to_o drive_v we_o to_o christ._n but_o the_o wicked_a be_v either_o note_n worse_a or_o no_o better_o that_o offend_v for_o though_o he_o have_v make_v a_o covenant_n with_o they_o that_o hell_n shall_v not_o prevail_v against_o they_o yet_o have_v he_o not_o make_v a_o covenant_n to_o free_v they_o ezechias_n who_o chatter_v like_o a_o crane_n or_o swallow_n wherein_o he_o show_v that_o he_o be_v so_o press_v with_o sorrow_n that_o he_o can_v do_v nothing_o but_o sigh_n and_o groan_n when_o we_o grow_v therefore_o in_o languish_a grief_n this_o be_v not_o the_o thing_n which_o please_v the_o lord_n but_o it_o nourish_v still_o in_o we_o mistrust_v we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n the_o unperfit_a speech_n of_o god_n child_n and_o dear_a saint_n utter_v in_o their_o grief_n their_o pathetical_a affection_n for_o what_o be_v the_o remedy_n in_o this_o confusion_n but_o even_o to_o pour_v out_o free_o before_o the_o lord_n their_o grief_n and_o in_o open_v they_o to_o their_o friend_n yea_o and_o when_o they_o can_v do_v neither_o of_o both_o yet_o will_v they_o reveal_v their_o sorrow_n to_o the_o tree_n of_o the_o field_n his_o offering_n we_o see_v be_v his_o grief_n the_o lord_n be_v god_n and_o not_o a_o idol_n he_o will_v hear_v sin_n thou_o when_o thou_o cry_v to_o be_v deliver_v than_o his_o reason_n will_v persuade_v he_o to_o leave_v the_o light_n of_o the_o word_n as_o a_o thing_n that_o in_o this_o case_n show_v no_o light_n and_o to_o use_v policy_n for_o to_o help_v himself_o this_o be_v a_o great_a temptation_n and_o if_o god_n have_v not_o assist_v he_o he_o may_v have_v fall_v hereby_o for_o we_o see_v that_o saul_n when_o the_o lord_n give_v he_o no_o answer_n by_o urim_n and_o thummim_n nor_o other_o ordinary_a mean_n he_o think_v good_a in_o policy_n to_o ask_v counsel_n of_o a_o witch_n which_o he_o before_o time_n have_v punish_v with_o death_n thus_o will_v corrupt_v judgement_n have_v carry_v he_o to_o use_v policy_n and_o unlawful_a mean_n and_o to_o have_v forsake_v the_o lantern_n of_o the_o word_n if_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o stay_v he_o and_o therefore_o this_o be_v one_o cause_n to_o move_v he_o most_o earnest_o to_o pray_v second_o if_o he_o look_v to_o his_o affection_n he_o shall_v find_v they_o as_o corrupt_v for_o they_o will_v have_v carry_v he_o to_o revenge_v when_o he_o see_v himself_o to_o be_v unreasonable_o and_o unconscionable_o deal_v withal_o and_o therefore_o to_o restrain_v the_o headstrong_a affection_n of_o revenge_n it_o be_v very_o needful_a
own_o nature_n and_o kind_n be_v good_a yet_o do_v become_v evil_a &_o sinful_a through_o us._n this_o may_v be_v perceive_v in_o all_o the_o part_n of_o our_o life_n let_v we_o then_o a_o little_a fee_n how_o our_o corruption_n deceive_v &_o defile_v we_o in_o many_o thing_n first_o this_o be_v without_o all_o controversy_n that_o be_v only_o the_o corruption_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n which_o cause_v we_o to_o be_v slack_a in_o do_v good_a or_o to_o leave_v it_o altogether_o undo_v or_o else_o to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o odious_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n for_o albeit_o many_o cause_n may_v be_v pretend_v which_o sometime_o may_v have_v a_o show_n of_o goodness_n yet_o those_o cause_n be_v but_o corruption_n there_o be_v no_o goodness_n in_o they_o some_o man_n be_v keep_v back_o from_o do_v good_a to_o their_o family_n by_o catechise_n they_o because_o they_o will_v not_o have_v all_o meâ—â—â—_n talk_v of_o they_o and_o because_o they_o will_v not_o hazard_v may_v provide_v for_o themselves_o and_o family_n and_o for_o every_o thing_n they_o do_v they_o will_v have_v a_o colourable_a excuse_n they_o will_v do_v nothing_o without_o a_o reason_n but_o their_o excuse_n be_v but_o colour_n their_o reason_n be_v very_o raw_a not_o season_v with_o the_o word_n they_o be_v deceive_v through_o the_o deceitfulnes_n of_o sin_n their_o corruption_n deceive_v they_o they_o be_v beguile_v because_o they_o make_v no_o trial_n of_o their_o heart_n the_o same_o thing_n come_v to_o pass_v even_o in_o those_o thing_n which_o in_o their_o kind_n be_v good_a to_o leave_v sin_n be_v a_o very_a good_a thing_n yet_o if_o we_o do_v not_o herein_o take_v heed_n unto_o our_o heart_n we_o may_v besore_n deceive_v for_o when_o we_o be_v mind_v and_o do_v purpose_n to_o leave_v sin_n let_v we_o consider_v the_o cause_n why_o we_o purpose_v and_o go_v about_o such_o a_o thing_n and_o we_o shall_v often_o find_v that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o conscience_n of_o sin_n but_o the_o fear_n of_o punishment_n or_o the_o shame_n of_o the_o world_n which_o move_v we_o so_o to_o do_v the_o adulterer_n do_v many_o time_n abstain_v from_o his_o filthy_a adultery_n not_o because_o that_o sin_n be_v odious_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n but_o because_o it_o will_v bring_v he_o to_o open_a shame_n among_o man_n the_o thief_n without_o any_o hatred_n of_o theft_n do_v sometime_o keep_v himself_o from_o the_o outward_a act_n that_o he_o may_v avoid_v hang_v and_o the_o outward_a danger_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o the_o shame_n of_o the_o world_n and_o fear_n of_o man_n do_v more_o prevail_v with_o many_o than_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n it_o may_v appear_v by_o this_o that_o sin_n they_o will_v abstain_v from_o such_o thing_n whereunto_o there_o belong_v shame_n or_o for_o which_o some_o grievous_a punishment_n among_o man_n be_v appoint_v as_o for_o theft_n murder_n adultery_n etc._n etc._n yet_o they_o will_v pass_v by_o great_a sin_n for_o which_o there_o be_v no_o penal_a statute_n as_o swear_v etc._n etc._n for_o if_o there_o be_v any_o true_a conscience_n of_o sin_n in_o they_o they_o will_v make_v a_o conscience_n of_o all_o sin_n but_o especial_o of_o these_o sin_n which_o in_o god_n eye_n be_v most_o abominable_a again_o we_o must_v not_o rest_v when_o we_o have_v leave_v any_o sin_n as_o though_o that_o be_v sufficient_a but_o we_o must_v narrow_o search_v into_o our_o heart_n to_o see_v what_o cause_n have_v move_v we_o so_o to_o do_v for_o if_o we_o do_v not_o with_o sorrow_n repent_v we_o of_o our_o wickedness_n and_o leave_v it_o for_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n but_o forsake_v it_o either_o because_o it_o will_v be_v no_o long_o profitable_a unto_o we_o or_o because_o we_o be_v sickly_a or_o old_a or_o weak_a and_o take_v no_o long_o pleasure_n in_o it_o then_o our_o labour_n be_v but_o lose_v our_o heart_n have_v deceive_v us._n and_o many_o no_o doubt_n be_v thus_o deceive_v yea_o they_o show_v that_o they_o be_v deceive_v by_o this_o that_o they_o can_v still_o speak_v of_o their_o sin_n without_o sorrow_n and_o laugh_v at_o other_o which_o commit_v the_o same_o sin_n very_o if_o they_o have_v repent_v of_o their_o sin_n the_o remembrance_n of_o they_o will_v have_v be_v grievous_a unto_o they_o yea_o they_o will_v be_v very_o sorry_a when_o they_o see_v other_o fall_v into_o the_o like_a our_o heart_n we_o purpose_v to_o deal_v faithful_o we_o purpose_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n to_o read_v it_o these_o thing_n in_o themselves_o be_v very_o good_a yet_o if_o we_o be_v not_o careful_a over_o our_o heart_n their_o corruption_n will_v pollute_v and_o defile_v they_o for_o if_o we_o be_v move_v hereunto_o not_o with_o any_o zeal_n of_o god_n glory_n but_o with_o a_o care_n of_o our_o own_o credit_n not_o because_o in_o truth_n we_o will_v countenance_v the_o gospel_n it_o but_o because_o we_o will_v get_v some_o countenance_n by_o it_o the_o thing_n good_a in_o it_o own_o nature_n be_v make_v evil_a unto_o we_o and_o sinful_a because_o our_o heart_n be_v not_o right_a in_o the_o thing_n and_o how_o many_o be_v thus_o deceive_v may_v soon_o appear_v by_o the_o small_a fruit_n which_o most_o man_n do_v get_v by_o the_o word_n for_o when_o we_o see_v many_o very_a diligent_a in_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n yet_o profit_v nothing_o nor_o desire_v to_o profit_n it_o be_v undoubted_o true_a that_o those_o man_n be_v deceive_v by_o their_o own_o heart_n which_o be_v not_o right_a with_o god_n if_o there_o be_v any_o conscience_n if_o there_o be_v any_o heart_n or_o spirit_n in_o man_n they_o will_v profit_v something_o or_o at_o least_o they_o will_v be_v great_o grieve_v for_o their_o not_o profit_v moreover_o when_o we_o have_v bring_v our_o purpose_n to_o practice_v and_o have_v do_v any_o good_a thing_n indeed_o even_o than_o i_o say_v may_v we_o be_v beguile_v if_o we_o take_v not_o good_a heed_n the_o corruption_n of_o our_o heart_n be_v ready_a to_o make_v we_o proud_a of_o well-doing_n whereas_o indeed_o we_o shall_v be_v humble_v it_o be_v ready_a to_o make_v we_o glory_n in_o that_o for_o which_o we_o shall_v give_v glory_n to_o god_n it_o be_v ready_a to_o make_v that_o a_o occasion_n of_o slothful_a carelessness_n which_o shall_v be_v as_o a_o spur_n to_o make_v we_o more_o careful_a therefore_o when_o the_o thing_n be_v do_v when_o the_o work_n be_v wrought_v and_o when_o all_o our_o purpose_n be_v bring_v to_o pass_v we_o must_v still_o be_v careful_a over_o our_o heart_n we_o must_v still_o have_v a_o eye_n to_o they_o that_o our_o corruption_n be_v in_o no_o wise_a hurtful_a to_o that_o good_a grace_n which_o god_n have_v give_v us._n thus_o whether_o we_o purpose_v to_o leave_v sin_n or_o we_o leave_v it_o indeed_o yet_o we_o may_v be_v deceive_v by_o our_o heart_n if_o they_o be_v not_o right_a in_o do_v of_o they_o therefore_o above_o all_o thing_n we_o must_v take_v heed_n unto_o our_o heart_n otherwise_o we_o may_v do_v many_o goodly_a &_o glorious_a thing_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n yet_o our_o heart_n will_v one_o day_n accuse_v we_o for_o they_o our_o conscience_n will_v check_v and_o control_v we_o and_o god_n which_o be_v great_a than_o our_o conscience_n will_v utter_o condemn_v us._n now_o contrariwise_o when_o our_o heart_n be_v upright_o with_o god_n when_o it_o be_v sound_a and_o sincere_a then_o will_v the_o lord_n favourable_o accept_v of_o our_o do_n and_o through_o his_o son_n he_o will_v count_v they_o righteous_a thus_o if_o we_o with_o a_o pure_a heart_n do_v leave_v sin_n though_o the_o dregs_n thereof_o remain_v with_o we_o if_o with_o a_o good_a heart_n to_o godward_o we_o labour_v after_o goodness_n though_o we_o can_v do_v the_o good_a which_o we_o will_v this_o uprightness_n of_o our_o heart_n do_v please_v god_n great_o and_o he_o will_v sure_o pardon_v the_o other_o imperfection_n through_o christ._n true_a it_o be_v that_o no_o man_n can_v say_v his_o heart_n be_v pure_a if_o he_o compare_v it_o with_o the_o rule_n of_o god_n word_n or_o with_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o
who_o so_o see_v not_o great_a corruption_n in_o his_o heart_n he_o see_v nothing_o yet_o the_o child_n of_o god_n may_v say_v that_o their_o heart_n be_v pure_a by_o christ_n which_o by_o faith_n purify_v they_o and_o have_v wrought_v the_o death_n of_o sin_n in_o they_o though_o some_o corruption_n remain_v in_o their_o heart_n this_o doctrine_n have_v two_o special_a use_n first_o to_o humble_v we_o second_o to_o comfort_v us._n we_o self_n have_v good_a cause_n to_o be_v humble_v see_v that_o it_o teach_v we_o that_o the_o very_a cause_n of_o all_o our_o sin_n be_v in_o ourselves_o not_o root_v in_o our_o heart_n we_o shall_v overcome_v evil_a through_o goodness_n christ_n be_v free_a from_o all_o sin_n and_o void_a of_o all_o corruption_n therefore_o sathan_n by_o temptation_n can_v not_o prevail_v against_o he_o no_o sathan_n can_v not_o prevail_v against_o our_o first_o father_n until_o his_o hart_n through_o unbelief_n be_v corrupt_v but_o we_o through_o our_o corruption_n do_v yield_v unto_o our_o temptation_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o our_o own_o sin_n that_o say_v therefore_o be_v altogether_o unsavourie_a which_o thief_n and_o and_o yet_o we_o more_o unsensible_a than_o any_o beast_n will_v not_o be_v move_v a_o whit_n and_o this_o fire_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v sudden_a simile_n and_o continual_a in_o that_o day_n when_o no_o tertullus_n can_v stand_v we_o in_o stead_n to_o plead_v for_o we_o no_o bribe_n will_v be_v able_a to_o speak_v for_o we_o for_o that_o will_v be_v a_o terrible_a day_n for_o all_o briber_n forgive_n all_o mercy_n consist_v either_o in_o give_v or_o forgive_n and_o there_o be_v no_o mercy_n but_o it_o be_v in_o one_o of_o these_o two_o therefore_o in_o respect_n of_o both_o these_o we_o shall_v see_v how_o the_o lord_n esteem_v it_o first_o for_o the_o mercy_n of_o forgiveness_n matth._n 6._o our_o saviour_n christ_n his_o advice_n be_v that_o if_o we_o please_v god_n in_o this_o kind_n of_o mercy_n even_o in_o the_o immediate_a worship_n of_o his_o name_n he_o be_v content_a to_o break_v off_o all_o his_o right_n to_o himself_o that_o we_o may_v pay_v this_o debt_n of_o sacrifice_n of_o mercy_n &_o therefore_o mercy_n be_v better_a than_o all_o other_o sacrifice_n so_o that_o this_o pension_n be_v so_o grateful_a to_o the_o lord_n that_o performance_n of_o this_o shall_v stay_v all_o other_o on_o the_o other_o side_n when_o this_o be_v not_o do_v we_o see_v matth._n 18._o the_o bring_n of_o ourselves_o in_o debt_n with_o the_o lord_n even_o to_o the_o sum_n of_o a_o thousand_o talent_n do_v not_o so_o much_o grieve_v he_o as_o the_o retain_v of_o this_o pension_n from_o the_o lord_n where_o for_o the_o servant_n debt_n no_o manner_n of_o evil_a word_n be_v give_v but_o all_o be_v forgive_v but_o after_o when_o this_o servant_n deny_v the_o pension_n of_o mercy_n than_o the_o lord_n take_v the_o matter_n hot_o and_o the_o other_o debt_n do_v not_o so_o much_o grieve_v he_o as_o this_o but_o to_o examine_v these_o thing_n in_o the_o balance_n of_o our_o own_o reason_n brethren_n if_o two_o man_n be_v to_o pass_v by_o a_o place_n where_o lie_v no_o small_a danger_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o hot_a pursuit_n of_o their_o enemy_n and_o one_o of_o they_o go_v over_o by_o a_o bridge_n escape_v and_o when_o this_o other_o be_v to_o escape_v by_o
