be_v save_v we_o more_o express_o say_v it_o be_v by_o a_o rectoral_a authority_n they_o grant_v it_o so_o by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n we_o say_v it_o be_v by_o a_o gospel_n positive_a law_n though_o we_o grant_v when_o this_o positive_a law_n require_v it_o we_o be_v oblige_v also_o by_o the_o general_a law_n of_o nature_n to_o yield_v obedience_n yet_o not_o by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n as_o specify_v by_o adam_n covenant_n which_o faith_n in_o christ_n be_v inconsistent_a with_o from_o the_o essential_a nature_n of_o that_o covenant_n our_o brethren_n be_v watchful_a against_o any_o inherent_a righteousness_n of_o man_n mingle_v with_o christ_n righteousness_n we_o beside_o avoid_v of_o that_o be_v solicitous_a lest_o man_n come_v short_a of_o salvation_n by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n through_o a_o neglect_n of_o what_o he_o require_v in_o all_o those_o who_o shall_v be_v save_v by_o it_o and_o yet_o we_o declare_v against_o all_o thing_n beside_o christ_n righteousness_n to_o be_v any_o impetrate_a satisfy_a atone_a merit_a or_o compensate_v righteousness_n and_o as_o faith_n have_v no_o share_n or_o place_n in_o this_o office_n so_o christ_n righteousness_n though_o the_o sole_a meritorious_a cause_n be_v not_o that_o which_o god_n by_o the_o gospel_n require_v of_o sinner_n that_o they_o may_v be_v save_v by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ._n faith_n be_v that_o command_v requisite_a and_o no_o more_o than_o that_o its_o place_n be_v thereto_o confine_v and_o therefore_o here_o be_v no_o mingle_v of_o our_o righteousness_n with_o that_o one_o sentence_n we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n viz._n 1._o that_o the_o believer_n be_v absolve_v from_o gild_n accept_v into_o god_n favour_n and_o entitle_v to_o eternal_a life_n in_o and_o for_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o neither_o faith_n nor_o any_o grace_n or_o act_n of_o we_o make_v the_o least_o recompense_n to_o god_n or_o be_v the_o least_o price_n or_o merit_n of_o pardon_n or_o life_n or_o any_o motive_n incline_v divine_a justice_n to_o promise_n or_o accept_v we_o into_o his_o favour_n or_o to_o treat_v we_o as_o righteous_a person_n this_o from_o our_o grant_v the_o condition_n be_v perform_v in_o the_o strength_n of_o christ_n free_o dispense_v yet_o upon_o the_o whole_a they_o provide_v against_o carnal_a security_n and_o we_o against_o carnal_a boast_v they_o be_v far_o from_o design_v to_o eclipse_v the_o glory_n of_o christ_n as_o king_n lawgiver_n and_o judge_n and_o we_o as_o far_o from_o intend_v the_o diminution_n of_o his_o glory_n as_o a_o priest_n how_o unreasonable_a and_o unhappy_a will_v perpetuate_v contest_v by_o where_o the_o ground_n pretend_v be_v of_o so_o little_a weight_n thus_o i_o have_v insist_v on_o what_o seem_v most_o like_a a_o difference_n in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o satisfaction_n and_o justification_n some_o weak_a person_n may_v think_v there_o be_v a_o great_a controversy_n where_o i_o see_v nothing_o worth_a our_o notice_n they_o will_v say_v some_o think_v we_o be_v justify_v by_o one_o act_n of_o faith_n viz._n reliance_n well_o but_o they_o say_v justify_v faith_n be_v receive_v christ_n etc._n etc._n as_o well_o as_o a_o reliance_n ay_o but_o a_o man_n see_v only_o with_o his_o eye_n though_o more_o be_v of_o the_o essence_n of_o a_o man_n but_o i_o say_v no_o man_n see_v without_o that_o which_o be_v of_o the_o essence_n of_o his_o eye_n another_o think_v justify_v faith_n as_o such_o receive_v christ_n only_o as_o a_o priest_n other_o say_v it_o receive_v he_o also_o as_o a_o king_n and_o prophet_n yet_o the_o last_o say_v the_o convince_a sinner_n have_v a_o especial_a respect_n to_o christ_n priesthood_n as_o most_o agreeable_a to_o his_o present_a case_n and_o the_o former_a will_v say_v its_o but_o a_o hypocritical_a faith_n that_o receive_v not_o christ_n as_o prophet_n and_o king_n as_o well_o as_o priest_n nay_o it_o be_v not_o the_o true_a christ_n the_o anoint_a messiah_n who_o be_v receive_v unless_o it_o be_v as_o prophet_n king_n and_o priest_n even_o christ_n jesus_n the_o lord_n ay_o but_o some_o say_v repentance_n be_v a_o effect_n of_o justification_n but_o there_o be_v very_o few_o of_o our_o congregational_a brethren_n of_o that_o mind_n and_o i_o suppose_v they_o mean_v work_n meet_v for_o repentance_n and_o not_o a_o change_n of_o the_o purpose_n of_o the_o heart_n nay_o but_o several_a say_v faith_n alone_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o justification_n other_o make_v repentance_n the_o condition_n of_o forgiveness_n what_o then_o see_v the_o first_o grant_v there_o be_v no_o justify_v faith_n without_o repentance_n and_o the_o last_o grant_v the_o aptitude_n of_o faith_n to_o receive_v and_o acknowledge_v christ_n which_o i_o suppose_v they_o mean_v by_o instrument_n be_v far_o great_a than_o repentance_n but_o when_o both_o side_n consider_v faith_n as_o a_o ordain_a condition_n as_o well_o as_o a_o instrument_n they_o will_v scarce_o dispute_v but_o that_o repentance_n be_v a_o condition_n of_o pardon_n as_o well_o as_o faith_n unless_o they_o will_v agree_v to_o join_v they_o together_o by_o call_v faith_n a_o penitent_a faith_n or_o repentance_n a_o believe_a repentance_n connote_v at_o once_o a_o sinner_n purpose_n to_o return_v to_o god_n by_o christ_n the_o mediator_n and_o his_o close_n with_o christ_n the_o mediator_n that_o he_o may_v return_v to_o god_n by_o he_o though_o i_o think_v the_o end_n be_v first_o agree_v to_o before_o the_o way_n or_o mean_n to_o that_o end_n be_v resolve_v on_o or_o make_v use_n of_o obj._n but_o sure_o there_o be_v a_o vast_a difference_n between_o those_o who_o think_v we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n only_o and_o those_o who_o think_v we_o be_v justify_v by_o work_n as_o well_o as_o by_o faith_n answ._n 1._o not_o so_o very_o great_a when_o both_o mean_a that_o we_o be_v justify_v neither_o by_o faith_n nor_o work_n as_o the_o word_n justify_v be_v common_o take_v for_o both_o agree_v that_o we_o be_v absolve_v accept_v as_o righteous_a and_o entitle_v to_o eternal_a life_n only_o for_o christ_n death_n and_o obedience_n as_o the_o only_o merit_v satisfactory_a and_o
whole_a scope_n of_o the_o gospel_n must_v be_v contradict_v if_o unbeliever_n do_v not_o remain_v condemn_v and_o believer_n only_o be_v justify_v but_o yet_o it_o seem_v hard_a to_o apprehend_v that_o god_n by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n account_v the_o person_n of_o a_o believer_n to_o have_v suffer_v in_o christ_n and_o therefore_o to_o be_v absolve_v who_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o account_v to_o suffer_v in_o christ_n while_o he_o be_v a_o vnbeliever_n and_o therefore_o condemn_v he_o and_o this_o by_o that_o very_a same_o law_n which_o now_o acquit_v he_o i_o know_v to_o make_v this_o consist_v it_o be_v offer_v that_o the_o elect_n be_v not_o christ_n seed_n till_o they_o become_v believer_n but_o this_o come_v short_a for_o it_o will_v thence_o follow_v that_o christ_n in_o his_o death_n be_v a_o strict_a representative_a who_o personate_a believer_n qua_fw-la believer_n which_o will_v induce_v ill_a consequence_n and_o yet_o further_o it_o be_v not_o true_a that_o the_o person_n of_o believer_n be_v seminal_o in_o christ_n when_o he_o die_v as_o we_o be_v in_o adam_n when_o he_o sin_v and_o so_o no_o argument_n can_v be_v bring_v from_o that_o instance_n i_o grant_v that_o both_o the_o merit_n and_o the_o powerful_a virtue_n whereby_o our_o person_n in_o time_n obtain_v faith_n be_v in_o christ_n before_o we_o be_v bear_v but_o that_o make_v not_o christ_n the_o root_n of_o our_o person_n at_o that_o time_n but_o of_o that_o regenerate_a virtue_n whereby_o we_o become_v believer_n and_o therefore_o tho_o as_o to_o this_o change_n of_o our_o qualification_n we_o may_v be_v call_v christ_n seed_n when_o we_o believe_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o seed_n as_o it_o may_v be_v say_v of_o we_o suffer_v in_o he_o as_o we_o sin_v in_o adam_n who_o be_v the_o natural_a root_n of_o our_o person_n and_o thereupon_o such_o a_o representative_a as_o his_o descendants_n sin_v in_o what_o may_v be_v say_v of_o christ_n adopt_v merit_n will_v have_v no_o place_n here_o for_o these_o author_n make_v adoption_n to_o be_v a_o effect_n of_o justification_n and_o so_o the_o imputation_n be_v prior_n 2._o there_o be_v other_o who_o be_v for_o impute_a righteousness_n in_o se_fw-la but_o can_v approve_v of_o the_o former_a manner_n of_o imputation_n among_o who_o there_o be_v some_o variety_n in_o word_v their_o conception_n but_o they_o come_v to_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n viz._n that_o god_n adjudge_v the_o believer_n to_o be_v one_o who_o absolution_n adoption_n and_o glory_n be_v promise_v to_o christ_n in_o reward_n of_o his_o death_n and_o obedience_n by_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n which_o be_v promise_v also_o to_o the_o believer_n himself_o in_o the_o gospel-covenant_n and_o for_o his_o actual_a interest_n and_o enjoyment_n thereof_o as_o also_o acceptance_n and_o treatment_n as_o a_o righteous_a person_n against_o all_o challenge_n god_n judicial_o account_n what_o christ_n have_v do_v and_o suffer_v to_o be_v his_o pleadable_a security_n this_o we_o take_v to_o be_v imputation_n second_o by_o the_o opinion_n of_o those_o who_o say_v christ_n righteousness_n be_v not_o impute_v in_fw-la se_fw-la but_o only_a as_o to_o effect_n they_o in_o expression_n oppose_v all_o the_o forementioned_a account_n deny_v that_o the_o first_o head_n be_v true_a and_o that_o the_o second_o be_v any_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n in_o se._n nevertheless_o they_o grant_v that_o christ_n righteousness_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n by_o faith_n and_o seem_v to_o insist_v most_o upon_o its_o efficacy_n to_o that_o end_n as_o christ_n satisfaction_n be_v the_o ground_n upon_o which_o god_n enact_v the_o gospel-covenant_n wherein_o our_o faith_n though_o imperfect_a be_v account_v for_o righteousness_n concern_v this_o opinion_n i_o shall_v offer_v a_o few_o thing_n 1._o none_o ought_v to_o narrow_a it_o as_o if_o the_o author_n mean_v that_o pardon_n and_o eternal_a life_n be_v not_o merit_v by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n for_o they_o affirm_v that_o these_o and_o other_o gospel-blessing_n be_v merit_v by_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o the_o gospel-covenant_n pray_v say_v not_o this_o it_o be_v not_o only_o the_o covenant_n itself_o but_o those_o very_a blessing_n which_o that_o covenant_n convey_v that_o be_v the_o merit_a effect_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o obedience_n they_o be_v his_o deserve_a reward_n which_o be_v dispense_v to_o we_o upon_o believe_v this_o i_o insert_v to_o obviate_v a_o conceit_n too_o much_o improve_v by_o some_o so_o stupid_a or_o worse_o that_o they_o will_v not_o own_o this_o distinction_n and_o still_o cry_v out_o as_o if_o their_o opinion_n confine_v the_o influence_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n to_o the_o procure_n of_o a_o law_n whereby_o man_n be_v to_o purchase_v pardon_n and_o life_n by_o their_o own_o faith_n whereas_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o this_o that_o they_o affirm_v these_o blessing_n be_v already_o account_v purchase_v and_o authority_n in_o christ_n to_o dispense_v they_o before_o he_o can_v enact_v such_o a_o law_n 2._o they_o intend_v not_o to_o exclude_v christ_n righteousness_n from_o be_v impute_v in_o any_o sense_n for_o they_o say_v its_o impute_a quoad_fw-la effectus_fw-la and_o therefore_o shall_v not_o be_v charge_v to_o deny_v all_o imputation_n or_o represent_v to_o say_v we_o be_v pardon_v and_o save_v for_o our_o own_o work_n without_o any_o imputation_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o obedience_n at_o all_o 3._o in_o all_o which_o they_o affirm_v concern_v justification_n they_o still_o suppose_v christ_n complete_a satisfaction_n and_o be_v sound_a therein_o none_o can_v accuse_v they_o to_o differ_v from_o the_o orthodox_n as_o to_o christ_n expiate_a sacrifice_n or_o impetration_n of_o eternal_a life_n 4._o i_o can_v wish_v a_o very_a worthy_a person_n of_o this_o opinion_n will_v review_v his_o own_o account_n of_o justification_n wherein_o he_o say_v it_o be_v that_o act_n whereby_o god_n impute_v to_o every_o sound_a believer_n his_o faith_n for_o righteousness_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n satisfaction_n and_o merit_n and_o give_v pardon_n and_o life_n as_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o i._n e._n of_o justification_n which_o he_o further_o explicate_v through_o christ_n sacrifice_n the_o defect_n of_o this_o faith_n which_o be_v our_o righteousness_n be_v pardon_v and_o by_o his_o merit_n that_o imperfect_a duty_n be_v account_v or_o impute_v to_o we_o for_o righteousness_n which_o it_o be_v not_o in_o itself_o have_v i_o thus_o state_v this_o point_n i_o shall_v ask_v myself_o do_v not_o i_o set_v pardon_n too_o remote_a from_o christ_n sacrifice_n as_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n and_o how_o can_v pardon_n be_v the_o effect_n of_o impute_v faith_n for_o righteousness_n which_o be_v justification_n and_o yet_o god_n can_v impute_v faith_n for_o righteousness_n unless_o he_o first_o pardon_v its_o defect_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n sacrifice_n but_o the_o cause_n of_o my_o mention_v this_o account_n follow_v 5._o they_o do_v affirm_v what_o amount_v to_o a_o real_a imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n in_o se_fw-la at_o lest_o what_o suppose_v this_o imputation_n and_o infer_v it_o to_o be_v necessary_a for_o how_o by_o christ_n merit_n can_v a_o righteousness_n in_o itself_o imperfect_a be_v reckon_v before_o a_o just_a god_n for_o our_o perfect_a righteousness_n and_o yet_o those_o merit_n for_o which_o it_o be_v so_o reckon_v not_o be_v impute_v at_o all_o for_o righteousness_n to_o we_o who_o have_v that_o faith_n will_v faith_n be_v no_o righteousness_n except_o the_o divine_a mind_n do_v apply_v the_o
