another_o sake_n and_o can_v challenge_v it_o simple_o for_o the_o work_v sake_n thus_o this_o truth_n enforce_v they_o after_o much_o turn_n and_o wind_v in_o effect_n to_o confess_v it_o though_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o will_v not_o have_v it_o seem_v so_o for_o fear_v of_o a_o sore_a loss_n that_o may_v follow_v thence_o unto_o their_o clergy_n kitchen_n and_o manger_n i_o mean_v their_o live_n and_o pomp_n but_o let_v they_o pass_v there_o be_v a_o second_o error_n of_o heretic_n puritan_n 2._o of_o perfection_n of_o holiness_n in_o this_o life_n dream_v of_o by_o the_o ancient_a they_o will_v not_o see_v themselves_o confute_v if_o ever_o any_o of_o you_o meet_v with_o any_o foolish_a hypocrite_n offer_v to_o tell_v you_o a_o tale_n of_o such_o perfection_n that_o he_o hope_v to_o get_v or_o that_o he_o have_v get_v or_o that_o may_v be_v get_v by_o any_o in_o this_o life_n as_o never_o to_o sin_v any_o more_o never_o any_o more_o to_o need_v repentance_n do_v no_o more_o but_o turn_v he_o to_o saint_n johns_n epistle_n and_o tell_v he_o that_o he_o that_o say_v he_o have_v no_o sin_n deceive_v himself_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v not_o in_o he_o bid_v he_o consult_v thereof_o if_o the_o cumbersomnesse_n of_o this_o do_v not_o cause_v we_o even_o in_o the_o time_n of_o our_o great_a immunity_n from_o other_o misery_n to_o covet_v our_o departure_n hence_o if_o principal_a and_o only_a active_a cause_n god_n 2._o from_o god_n be_v god_n power_n and_o goodness_n that_o cause_n beyond_o which_o it_o be_v a_o madness_n to_o inquire_v for_o any_o other_o cause_n the_o lord_n do_v please_v to_o bestow_v effectual_a grace_n upon_o those_o who_o he_o will_v receive_v to_o mercy_n whereby_o they_o have_v not_o alone_o their_o mind_n enlighten_v to_o some_o perceive_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n word_n but_o also_o their_o will_n by_o the_o mighty_a operation_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n subdue_v to_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o same_o so_o by_o the_o this_o grace_n all_o in_o the_o church_n will_v be_v hypocrite_n as_o well_o as_o any_o but_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o bestow_v that_o grace_n upon_o one_o who_o he_o have_v enable_v to_o desire_v it_o that_o he_o may_v gracious_o bestow_v it_o which_o to_o another_o he_o give_v not_o but_o leave_v he_o to_o his_o own_o carelessness_n of_o it_o that_o miss_v it_o by_o his_o own_o default_n his_o blood_n may_v be_v upon_o his_o own_o head_n so_o the_o perdition_n of_o hypocrite_n be_v of_o themselves_o because_o they_o willing_o refuse_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n which_o he_o do_v offer_v they_o the_o soundness_n and_o happiness_n of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n be_v of_o his_o free_a grace_n that_o break_v the_o yoke_n of_o sin_n which_o hold_v they_o under_o and_o make_v they_o willing_a of_o unwilling_a and_o able_a of_o unable_a to_o turn_v themselves_o unto_o he_o for_o to_o imagine_v as_o some_o will_v needs_o do_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v deal_v no_o more_o bountiful_o with_o one_o than_o with_o another_o of_o the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n but_o that_o the_o cause_n why_o one_o become_v a_o hypocrite_n the_o other_o prevail_v to_o uprightness_n be_v mere_o and_o whole_o in_o themselves_o be_v a_o fancy_n i_o think_v so_o contrary_a to_o all_o both_o scripture_n and_o experience_n of_o god_n saint_n that_o hardly_o can_v any_o be_v deceive_v with_o it_o but_o he_o that_o never_o feel_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v upright_o and_o whence_o it_o come_v and_o thus_o have_v we_o lay_v before_o you_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n chap._n iii_o show_v the_o description_n and_o sort_n of_o hypocrite_n now_o it_o be_v very_o requisite_a that_o we_o make_v a_o plain_a and_o sound_a explication_n of_o it_o to_o the_o intent_n that_o every_o man_n may_v discern_v of_o himself_o and_o of_o his_o own_o estate_n whether_o himself_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n yea_o or_o no._n we_o will_v therefore_o do_v our_o best_a to_o lay_v the_o matter_n open_v clear_o that_o it_o may_v be_v evident_o discover_v to_o they_o that_o will_v take_v the_o pain_n of_o inquire_v about_o the_o point_n who_o be_v guileful_a who_o without_o guile_n and_o for_o this_o purpose_n it_o be_v necessary_a to_o stand_v upon_o these_o four_o head_n first_o to_o show_v what_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v second_o to_o show_v the_o diverse_a sort_n or_o rather_o degree_n of_o hypocrite_n three_o to_o set_v down_o some_o general_a note_n of_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o true-hearted_a and_o the_o hypocrite_n last_o to_o declare_v more_o particular_o the_o agreement_n &_o disagreement_n of_o they_o both_o in_o four_o principal_a and_o main_a grace_n whereof_o the_o one_o have_v alone_o the_o shadow_n the_o other_o the_o substance_n that_o be_v first_o in_o knowledge_n second_o in_o faith_n three_o in_o repentance_n fourthly_a in_o good_a life_n or_o in_o obedience_n first_o then_o for_o the_o describe_v of_o a_o hypocrite_n viz_o what_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v viz_o we_o must_v make_v use_n of_o a_o necessary_a rule_n of_o logic_n which_o bid_v we_o to_o define_v the_o concrete_a by_o the_o abstract_n as_o they_o term_v it_o as_o no_o man_n can_v possible_o declare_v what_o a_o white_a thing_n be_v but_o by_o conceive_v and_o express_v what_o be_v whiteness_n nor_o what_o a_o proud_a man_n be_v but_o by_o understand_v what_o pride_n be_v nor_o what_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v but_o by_o know_v what_o be_v hypocrisy_n and_o again_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o virtue_n and_o vice_n do_v not_o denominate_v their_o subject_n unless_o they_o be_v in_o they_o in_o so_o high_a a_o degree_n as_o to_o prevail_v and_o be_v predominant_a over_o their_o contrary_n as_o nothing_o be_v call_v white_a but_o that_o in_o which_o whiteness_n so_o prevail_v that_o it_o partake_v more_o of_o white_a than_o of_o any_o other_o colour_n and_o if_o a_o thing_n do_v so_o partake_v of_o whiteness_n we_o call_v it_o white_a though_o it_o fail_v much_o of_o the_o white_a whiteness_n that_o may_v be_v so_o be_v he_o call_v a_o proud_a man_n in_o who_o pride_n prevail_v a_o infidel_n who_o infidelity_n rule_v a_o revengeful_a man_n in_o who_o revenge_n do_v bear_v sway_n and_o a_o covetous_a man_n in_o who_o covetousness_n reign_v and_o so_o must_v we_o likewise_o conclude_v in_o the_o present_a matter_n that_o he_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n in_o who_o hypocrisy_n prevail_v and_o bear_v rule_v to_o the_o make_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n therefore_o three_o thing_n must_v concur_v rule_v a_o prosessor_n of_o christian_a religion_n in_o who_o hypocrisy_n rule_v first_o a_o fit_a subject_n viz._n such_o a_o one_o as_o do_v at_o least_o in_o appearance_n profess_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o christian_n and_o to_o believe_v in_o christ_n as_o nothing_o can_v be_v call_v a_o unfruitful_a branch_n if_o it_o be_v not_o a_o branch_n so_o neither_o can_v any_o man_n be_v term_v a_o hypocrite_n unless_o at_o least_o external_o he_o be_v in_o christ_n in_o this_o meaning_n as_o we_o now_o take_v the_o word_n hypocrite_n in_o opposition_n to_o a_o sound_a member_n of_o christ_n second_o there_o must_v be_v in_o that_o subject_n a_o adjunct_n that_o vice_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o three_o this_o vice_n must_v be_v in_o that_o subject_n in_o such_o degree_n as_o to_o bear_v to_o rule_v and_o to_o be_v as_o they_o term_v it_o predominant_a wherefore_o for_o our_o further_a information_n in_o this_o matter_n which_o be_v most_o exceed_o needful_a to_o be_v very_o distinct_o know_v and_o conceive_v of_o we_o must_v search_v into_o the_o nature_n of_o that_o crooked_a viz._n what_o hypocrisy_n be_v viz._n selfe-covering_a and_o selfe-cousening_a vice_n of_o hypocrisy_n about_o which_o we_o need_v not_o go_v far_o but_o alone_o turn_v our_o thought_n to_o the_o apostle_n description_n of_o it_o 3.5_o 2._o tim._n 3.5_o viz._n that_o it_o be_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n without_o the_o power_n thereof_o it_o a_o false_a feign_a goodness_n a_o goodness_n alone_o paint_v and_o put_v on_o and_o counterfeit_v in_o plain_a word_n thus_o you_o may_v describe_v it_o a_o corruption_n of_o the_o will_n sake_n a_o corruption_n of_o the_o will_n incline_v itself_o to_o do_v some_o good_a &_o leave_v some_o evil_n for_o one_o own_o sake_n whereby_o it_o incline_v itself_o to_o seem_v good_a by_o do_v some_o good_a and_o leave_v some_o evil_n for_o one_o own_o sake_n for_o every_o man_n be_v natural_o desirous_a to_o have_v other_o man_n esteem_v he_o good_a and_o to_o esteem_v of_o himself_o also_o as_o of_o one_o that_o be_v good_a and_o because_o neither_o will_v his_o neighbour_n conceive_v so_o of_o he_o neither_o can_v he_o so_o conceive_v of_o himself_o without_o some_o ground_n for_o such_o conceit_n he_o be_v therefore_o willing_a to_o do_v something_o that_o may_v work_v in_o other_o and_o in_o himself_o such_o a_o opinion_n of_o he_o and_o to_o avoid_v some_o other_o thing_n that_o little_o practise_v how_o long_o will_v you_o continue_v to_o neglect_v this_o most_o save_a and_o most_o profitable_a exercise_n of_o bind_v the_o word_n on_o the_o table_n of_o your_o heart_n and_o of_o incorporate_n it_o into_o your_o soul_n and_o be_v god_n instrument_n to_o engrave_v it_o in_o your_o own_o mind_n by_o meditate_v on_o it_o and_o by_o busy_v your_o cogitation_n upon_o it_o afterward_o as_o a_o thing_n that_o much_o concern_v you_o how_o often_o have_v you_o be_v tell_v that_o much_o hear_n without_o meditation_n will_v breed_v nothing_o but_o a_o swim_a knowledge_n that_o it_o will_v not_o beget_v holiness_n that_o it_o will_v not_o renew_v the_o soul_n but_o that_o hear_v second_v with_o meditation_n will_v quicken_v and_o will_v sanctify_v i_o pray_v you_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o fault_n &_o amend_v it_o redeem_v time_n as_o to_o come_v and_o hearken_v to_o the_o voice_n of_o god_n speak_v to_o thou_o so_o likewise_o to_o get_v alone_o afterward_o of_o all_o sin_n and_o of_o wash_v and_o cleanse_v his_o heart_n and_o that_o without_o this_o care_n there_o be_v no_o salvation_n he_o will_v not_o believe_v that_o the_o way_n to_o heaven_n be_v so_o narrow_a he_o shrink_v back_o at_o these_o exhortation_n and_o think_v the_o lord_n be_v a_o hard_a master_n and_o will_v go_v with_o he_o no_o further_o so_o then_o see_v the_o fruitless_a it_o he_o shall_v gain_v certain_a freedom_n from_o the_o tyranny_n and_o usurpation_n thereof_o lo_o brethren_n so_o many_o of_o you_o as_o have_v hitherto_o be_v servant_n to_o guile_n i_o have_v without_o endeavour_n to_o practice_v i_o think_v it_o shall_v not_o be_v possible_a that_o any_o among_o you_o shall_v have_v a_o heart_n so_o desperate_o harden_v as_o not_o to_o observe_v a_o exhortation_n so_o near_o concern_v he_o and_o so_o much_o and_o earnest_o beat_v upon_o he_o i_o think_v it_o can_v be_v that_o any_o mark_v it_o shall_v possible_o settle_v himself_o in_o a_o wilful_a obstinacy_n of_o go_v on_o as_o he_o have_v begin_v and_o not_o mend_v so_o damnable_a a_o sin_n all_o the_o way_n that_o satan_n have_v to_o make_v you_o lose_v the_o fruit_n of_o this_o exhortation_n be_v to_o nuzzle_v you_o in_o a_o good_a conceit_n that_o sure_o you_o be_v not_o hypocrite_n but_o already_o true-hearted_a and_o therefore_o the_o exhortation_n though_o needful_a yet_o be_v to_o you_o impertinent_a but_o thou_o must_v understand_v that_o though_o thou_o be_v not_o a_o rank_n hypocrite_n yet_o the_o thing_n deliver_v concern_v thou_o and_o be_v needful_a for_o thou_o also_o as_o well_o as_o for_o he_o that_o be_v for_o there_o be_v none_o of_o all_o god_n saint_n so_o perfect_o renew_v but_o that_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o the_o leaven_n of_o hypocrisy_n may_v be_v find_v in_o he_o though_o not_o so_o much_o as_o by_o quite_o overcome_v he_o shall_v give_v he_o the_o name_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n yet_o so_o much_o as_o by_o often_o break_v forth_o in_o he_o may_v just_o cause_v he_o to_o take_v heed_n and_o beware_v of_o hypocrisy_n as_o our_o saviour_n christ_n bid_v now_o the_o same_o thing_n that_o be_v available_a to_o beat_v down_o any_o vice_n from_o bear_v rule_n in_o the_o heart_n the_o same_o thing_n be_v also_o needful_a for_o the_o further_o and_o further_o weaken_v of_o it_o that_o it_o may_v be_v less_o and_o less_o noisome_a to_o the_o heart_n wherefore_o howsoever_o the_o case_n go_v with_o thou_o thou_o have_v a_o portion_n in_o this_o work_n if_o thou_o know_v thyself_o to_o have_v be_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n most_o of_o more_o upright_o that_o thou_o can_v true_o and_o assure_o affirm_v thyself_o to_o be_v no_o dissembler_n yet_o thou_o also_o must_v do_v the_o thing_n persuade_v that_o by_o more_o prevail_a against_o guile_n thou_o may_v have_v more_o comfort_n and_o lest_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o thus_o continue_v to_o mortify_v this_o corruption_n it_o get_v head_n against_o thou_o again_o so_o far_o as_o almost_o to_o lay_v its_o yoke_n upon_o thou_o the_o second_o time_n for_o a_o man_n that_o be_v now_o so_o true_a and_o upright_o as_o that_o he_o be_v well_o assure_v the_o power_n of_o guile_n be_v break_v within_o he_o shall_v yet_o if_o he_o foreslacke_a the_o perform_n of_o the_o thing_n i_o have_v former_o prescribe_v by_o little_a and_o little_o have_v guile_n so_o apt_a to_o grow_v in_o he_o as_o weed_n in_o a_o garden_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v little_a less_o than_o quite_o overrun_v with_o it_o in_o a_o short_a space_n wherefore_o though_o the_o thing_n be_v somewhat_o tedious_a to_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o though_o corruption_n have_v no_o mind_n to_o set_v about_o they_o for_o when_o do_v any_o man_n who_o body_n be_v wound_v come_v otherwise_o then_o unwilling_o to_o be_v search_v tent_a plaster_v and_o who_o ever_o take_v a_o potion_n but_o with_o some_o rise_n against_o it_o of_o his_o stomach_n yet_o enforce_v thyself_o &_o urge_v the_o not_o deaf_a to_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o live_a god_n frustrate_v not_o his_o ordinance_n disappoint_v not_o yourselves_o of_o the_o good_a his_o word_n will_v do_v you_o by_o neglect_v its_o
