prevent_v see_v the_o case_n be_v so_o i_o think_v it_o plain_o follow_v that_o those_o man_n of_o eminent_a integrity_n and_o virtue_n how_o low_a soever_o some_o of_o their_o fortune_n may_v be_v who_o without_o any_o prospect_n of_o worldly_a advantage_n nay_o to_o their_o manifest_a loss_n have_v resolve_v to_o encounter_v difficulty_n and_o danger_n and_o undergo_v calumny_n and_o slander_n rather_o than_o wickedness_n shall_v continue_v barefaced_a and_o vice_n spread_v every_o where_n without_o opposition_n any_o more_o those_o man_n i_o say_v deserve_v all_o encouragement_n to_o themselves_o and_o their_o design_n the_o countenance_n and_o protection_n of_o our_o governor_n and_o all_o who_o wish_v well_o to_o religion_n it_o be_v true_a they_o have_v have_v no_o small_a share_n in_o censure_n and_o objection_n but_o what_o person_n so_o innocent_a what_o design_n to_o laudable_a as_o to_o escape_v they_o if_o christianity_n the_o best_a religion_n if_o the_o bless_a jesus_n the_o holy_a person_n that_o ever_o be_v have_v be_v and_o daily_o be_v blaspheme_v revile_v and_o slander_v what_o be_v you_o my_o brethren_n that_o you_o shall_v hope_v to_o be_v exempt_v from_o the_o common_a fate_n of_o the_o best_a man_n in_o the_o world_n have_v satan_n entire_o change_v his_o nature_n and_o lay_v aside_o his_o malice_n be_v he_o not_o only_o transform_v into_o the_o likeness_n of_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n but_o become_v real_o one_o will_v he_o no_o more_o oppose_v religion_n no_o more_o obstruct_v reformation_n of_o manner_n or_o have_v the_o old_a serpent_n lose_v at_o once_o his_o cunning_a and_o his_o poison_n have_v he_o so_o often_o misrepresent_v religion_n with_o great_a success_n and_o expose_v it_o to_o public_a hatred_n by_o paint_v it_o as_o some_o frightful_a monster_n and_o will_v he_o still_o prosecute_v the_o same_o method_n which_o have_v hardly_o ever_o fail_v he_o and_o endeavour_v to_o defeat_v the_o good_a design_n of_o some_o man_n by_o raise_v unaccountable_a jealousy_n and_o fear_n in_o other_o and_o labour_n to_o undermine_v by_o secret_a calumny_n and_o slander_n what_o he_o want_v power_n direct_o to_o oppose_v but_o yet_o if_o two_o or_o three_o sort_n of_o person_n be_v silent_a very_o few_o mouth_n will_v be_v open_v against_o society_n for_o reformation_n those_o who_o take_v thing_n upon_o trust_n and_o condemn_v without_o know_v the_o merit_n of_o the_o cause_n who_o have_v be_v impose_v upon_o for_o want_n of_o due_a enquiry_n by_o false_a representation_n both_o of_o the_o design_n and_o person_n concern_v in_o it_o or_o those_o who_o be_v not_o true_o zealous_a themselves_o be_v angry_a that_o any_o shall_v go_v beyond_o they_o and_o thereby_o tacit_o reproach_v their_o want_n of_o zeal_n or_o they_o last_o who_o be_v enrage_v that_o their_o unlawful_a liberty_n shall_v be_v check_v and_o restrain_v that_o any_o shall_v presume_v to_o curb_n their_o lewdness_n and_o profaneness_n but_o the_o clamour_n of_o these_o kind_n of_o man_n be_v ill_o ground_v and_o unjust_a such_o as_o can_v be_v no_o surprise_n to_o any_o who_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o corruption_n of_o humane_a nature_n and_o consider_v the_o active_a indefatigable_a malice_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o therefore_o can_v never_o shake_v a_o prudent_a well_o establish_a zeal_n and_o such_o i_o trust_v in_o god_n your_o zeal_n will_v always_o be_v and_o that_o you_o will_v still_o find_v that_o encouragement_n and_o protection_n to_o which_o you_o be_v just_o entitle_v by_o the_o excellency_n of_o your_o undertake_n and_o prudence_n of_o your_o behaviour_n i_o be_o persuade_v you_o do_v not_o enter_v into_o these_o society_n rash_o and_o unadvised_o but_o weigh_v all_o the_o hardship_n and_o inconvenience_n you_o may_v reasonable_o expect_v on_o the_o one_o hand_n and_o consider_v the_o motive_n which_o excite_v your_o zeal_n on_o the_o other_o and_o after_o mature_a deliberation_n choose_v the_o good_a part_n and_o resolve_v with_o great_a constancy_n to_o adhere_v to_o it_o cheerful_o to_o bear_v opposition_n contempt_n and_o reproach_n provide_v you_o may_v be_v able_a to_o put_v a_o stop_n to_o any_o one_o prevail_v sin_n but_o the_o same_o christian_a zeal_n which_o first_o move_v you_o to_o asscociate_v against_o vice_n will_v oblige_v you_o to_o continue_v and_o persevere_v to_o become_v more_o active_a and_o zealous_a in_o suppress_v it_o to_o this_o your_o obligation_n be_v great_a as_o member_n of_o the_o christian_a church_n into_o which_o when_o you_o be_v admit_v you_o vow_v to_o continue_v christ_n faithful_a servant_n and_o soldier_n to_o your_o life_n end_v but_o your_o belong_v to_o a_o society_n who_o sole_a end_n be_v reformation_n of_o manner_n have_v much_o increase_v they_o a_o design_n the_o best_a and_o noble_a in_o the_o world_n but_o which_o ought_v to_o be_v prosecute_v with_o a_o very_a constant_a prudent_a zeal_n that_o the_o enemy_n of_o piety_n may_v not_o be_v able_a to_o insult_v may_v have_v no_o occasion_n to_o upbraid_v any_o of_o you_o either_o with_o negligence_n or_o imprudence_n and_o then_o will_v you_o more_o successful_o promote_v your_o great_a and_o excellent_a end_n and_o in_o due_a time_n stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o gainsayers_a these_o be_v the_o several_a order_n of_o man_n who_o be_v particular_o oblige_v to_o be_v zealous_o affect_v in_o suppress_v profaneness_n and_o vice_n not_o that_o any_o be_v exempt_v from_o it_o it_o be_v the_o business_n and_o duty_n and_o aught_o to_o be_v the_o study_n and_o practice_n of_o every_o christian._n here_o all_o be_v command_v and_o may_v without_o a_o crime_n put_v forth_o their_o hand_n to_o support_v the_o ark._n it_o be_v true_a they_o can_v they_o must_v not_o all_o attempt_n to_o do_v it_o the_o same_o way_n what_o be_v the_o indispensible_a duty_n of_o one_o may_v be_v a_o great_a sin_n in_o another_o to_o pretend_v to_o and_o though_o all_o aught_o to_o show_v their_o zeal_n for_o religion_n and_o reformation_n yet_o they_o must_v take_v different_a way_n of_o show_v it_o which_o lead_v i_o to_o the_o three_o particular_a i_o propose_v to_o speak_v to_o which_o be_v to_o point_v out_o those_o way_n wherein_o we_o may_v best_o employ_v and_o show_v our_o zeal_n so_o as_o to_o attain_v the_o excellent_a end_n it_o aim_v at_o something_o of_o this_o i_o have_v hint_v at_o already_o for_o by_o mention_v those_o several_a sort_n of_o man_n who_o be_v oblige_v to_o high_a degree_n of_o zeal_n against_o vice_n than_o other_o i_o do_v in_o effect_n show_v how_o their_o zeal_n be_v to_o express_v itself_o thus_o for_o example_n be_v we_o zealous_a minister_n of_o religion_n then_o must_v our_o zeal_n appear_v both_o to_o god_n and_o man_n in_o our_o public_a preach_v and_o exemplary_a life_n and_o in_o our_o private_a labour_n and_o endeavour_n to_o infuse_v piety_n and_o zeal_n into_o other_o we_o must_v show_v our_o zeal_n by_o lead_v the_o way_n to_o other_o in_o the_o best_a manner_n prudence_n direct_v and_o so_o far_o as_o our_o duty_n require_v and_o last_o our_o zeal_n must_v express_v itself_o in_o constant_a and_o fervent_a prayer_n to_o god_n for_o his_o blessing_n and_o assistance_n again_o be_v we_o zealous_o magistrate_n then_o be_v we_o to_o employ_v our_o zeal_n in_o vigorous_o execute_v the_o law_n against_o immorality_n and_o profaneness_n we_o be_v to_o countenance_n and_o encourage_v all_o who_o be_v engage_v in_o the_o service_n of_o religion_n and_o reformation_n and_o secure_v they_o from_o the_o rude_a insult_n of_o those_o who_o have_v make_v themselves_o their_o enemy_n and_o to_o influence_n other_o to_o honour_n religion_n by_o the_o brightness_n of_o our_o own_o example_n as_o for_o those_o of_o inferior_a degree_n who_o station_n be_v private_a and_o who_o condition_n be_v obscure_a even_o they_o may_v many_o way_n testify_v the_o sincerity_n of_o their_o zeal_n and_o make_v it_o very_o serviceable_a to_o piety_n and_o virtue_n the_o mean_a man_n among_o we_o have_v a_o family_n to_o take_v care_n of_o and_o that_o he_o may_v preserve_v from_o the_o infection_n of_o reign_v sin_n he_o can_v admonish_v can_v reprove_v and_o correct_v his_o child_n or_o his_o servant_n with_o authority_n and_o good_a effect_n he_o may_v also_o exhort_v and_o advise_v his_o neighbour_n of_o his_o own_o rank_n nay_o he_o may_v reprove_v he_o too_o upon_o a_o just_a occasion_n and_o in_o a_o prudent_a manner_n and_o thereby_o contribute_v much_o to_o reclaim_v he_o such_o a_o man_n may_v especial_o be_v very_o useful_a to_o religion_n by_o bring_v the_o open_a enemy_n of_o it_o to_o deserve_a punishment_n he_o will_v unavoidable_o be_v often_o a_o witness_n of_o public_a sin_n he_o will_v frequent_o see_v the_o lordsday_n profane_v and_o hear_v god_n holy_a name_n dishonour_v and_o blaspheme_v and_o that_o by_o those_o who_o be_v too_o great_a
in_o great_a variety_n of_o passion_n it_o appear_v in_o his_o hatred_n his_o joy_n and_o in_o his_o grief_n in_o his_o hatred_n 26.5_o psal._n 26.5_o i_o have_v hate_v the_o congregation_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o will_v not_o sit_v among_o the_o ungodly_a in_o his_o joy_n 122.1_o psal._n 122.1_o i_o be_v glad_a say_v he_o when_o they_o say_v unto_o i_o we_o will_v go_v into_o the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n he_o be_v glad_a to_o see_v piety_n prevail_v among_o other_o and_o that_o the_o motion_n of_o go_v to_o the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n shall_v come_v from_o any_o beside_o himself_o but_o the_o greatness_n of_o his_o zeal_n chief_o show_v itself_o in_o his_o grief_n a_o true_o zealous_a man_n meet_v with_o many_o more_o occasion_n of_o sorrow_n than_o joy_n from_o other_o and_o therefore_o the_o psalmist_n language_n be_v sometime_o very_o mournful_a 119.136_o psal._n 119.136_o river_n of_o water_n run_v down_o my_o eye_n because_o they_o keep_v not_o thy_o law_n and_o again_o 158._o vers_fw-la 158._o i_o behold_v the_o transgressor_n and_n be_v grieve_v because_o they_o keep_v not_o thy_o word_n 18._o 1_o king_n 18._o how_o zealous_a be_v elijah_n against_o idolatry_n he_o bold_o reprove_v the_o king_n of_o israel_n and_o destroy_v the_o priest_n of_o baal_n though_o he_o be_v no_o stranger_n to_o jezabels_n revengeful_a spirit_n nay_o he_o appeal_v to_o god_n himself_o that_o he_o have_v be_v very_o zealous_a for_o the_o lord_n god_n of_o host_n 13.15.21_o neh._n 13.15.21_o nehemiah_n be_v a_o noble_a example_n of_o zeal_n and_o courage_n fit_a for_o all_o christian_n but_o chief_o magistrate_n to_o follow_v he_o contend_v with_o the_o great_a man_n of_o judah_n for_o profane_v the_o sabbath_n he_o do_v not_o modest_o pass_v by_o their_o fault_n out_o of_o respect_n to_o their_o quality_n nor_o gentle_o touch_v as_o if_o afraid_a to_o hurt_v they_o but_o oppose_v all_o abuse_n of_o the_o sabbath_n with_o great_a zeal_n and_o resolution_n and_o at_o last_o effectual_o suppress_v they_o though_o very_o general_a and_o prevail_a the_o time_n will_v fail_v i_o to_o mention_v all_o the_o prophet_n &_o apostle_n the_o primitive_a saint_n confessor_n and_o martyr_n who_o have_v be_v eminent_a example_n of_o a_o fervent_a zeal_n who_o value_v not_o ease_n nor_o fame_n nor_o life_n so_o they_o may_v propagate_v the_o true_a religion_n and_o effectual_o discourage_v impiety_n and_o vice_n a_o zeal_n which_o conquer_a the_o world_n and_o all_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n to_o which_o nothing_o be_v too_o difficult_a to_o be_v do_v nor_o too_o grievous_a to_o be_v suffer_v in_o so_o glorious_a a_o cause_n if_o we_o observe_v but_o the_o single_a instance_n of_o st._n paul_n we_o can_v without_o amazement_n reflect_v upon_o the_o many_o persecution_n calamity_n and_o affliction_n the_o many_o peril_n by_o land_n and_o sea_n from_o his_o own_o countryman_n and_o stranger_n from_o open_a enemy_n pretend_a friend_n and_o false_a brethren_n which_o his_o zeal_n embold_v he_o to_o meet_v and_o enable_v he_o to_o bear_v but_o behold_v we_o have_v a_o great_a example_n of_o holy_a zeal_n than_o he_o and_o that_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o saviour_n of_o the_o world_n it_o be_v zeal_n for_o the_o reformation_n and_o happiness_n of_o the_o world_n bring_v he_o down_o from_o heaven_n and_o expose_v he_o to_o poverty_n and_o misery_n and_o disgrace_n here_o below_o the_o same_o holy_a zeal_n make_v he_o bold_o reprove_v the_o great_a among_o man_n whilst_o he_o familiar_o converse_v with_o the_o mean_a make_v he_o toil_n and_o labour_n and_o go_v about_o do_v good_a even_o to_o those_o who_o make_v he_o the_o return_n of_o hatred_n for_o his_o goodwill_n out_o of_o zeal_n for_o the_o true_a religion_n he_o unmask_v the_o pharisee_n and_o lay_v open_v their_o hypocrisy_n and_o bring_v upon_o himself_o the_o hatred_n and_o revenge_n of_o that_o malicious_a dissemble_a sect._n nay_o his_o zeal_n make_v he_o once_o lay_v aside_o the_o lamb_n and_o with_o the_o resentment_n as_o well_o as_o authority_n of_o a_o offend_a judge_n vindicate_v the_o honour_n of_o god_n by_o scourge_v the_o buyer_n and_o seller_n out_o of_o the_o temple_n so_o that_o with_o great_a justice_n do_v the_o evangelist_n apply_v that_o expression_n of_o the_o psalmist_n to_o our_o lord_n the_o zeal_n of_o thy_o house_n 2.15.17_o jo._n 2.15.17_o have_v eat_v i_o up_o but_o the_o most_o stupendous_a instance_n of_o divine_a zeal_n be_v the_o bless_a jesus_n die_v to_o promote_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o happiness_n of_o mankind_n we_o honour_v the_o zeal_n of_o those_o who_o be_v willing_a to_o undergo_v trouble_n and_o run_v a_o few_o hazard_n for_o religion_n what_o then_o shall_v we_o say_v of_o the_o zeal_n of_o our_o bless_a saviour_n zeal_n which_o nail_v he_o to_o the_o cross_n and_o shed_v his_o blood_n and_o make_v he_o yield_v up_o the_o ghost_n zeal_n which_o make_v his_o soul_n all_o gloominess_n and_o horror_n deprive_v he_o of_o the_o usual_a manifestation_n of_o his_o father_n love_n force_v he_o to_o cry_v out_o that_o his_o god_n have_v forsake_v he_o and_o in_o the_o bitter_a agony_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n to_o expire_v this_o be_v wonderful_a zeal_n indeed_o nay_o zeal_n that_o want_v a_o name_n be_v beyond_o our_o expression_n and_o even_o too_o narrow_a thought_n yet_o such_o as_o shall_v strong_o engage_v we_o to_o the_o exact_a imitation_n we_o be_v capable_a of_o and_o turn_v our_o whole_a soul_n into_o flame_n of_o zeal_n and_o love_n for_o he_o to_o who_o we_o owe_v whatever_o we_o enjoy_v or_o hope_v for_o who_o even_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o we_o to_o rescue_v we_o from_o misery_n and_o entitle_v we_o to_o eternal_a glory_n such_o example_n of_o zeal_n do_v the_o word_n of_o god_n set_v before_o we_o the_o best_a &_o great_a we_o can_v have_v even_o patriarch_n &_o king_n prophet_n and_o apostle_n and_o above_o all_o the_o great_a captain_n of_o our_o salvation_n the_o holy_a jesus_n and_o while_o we_o have_v these_o in_o view_n can_v any_o of_o we_o be_v cold_a and_o indifferent_a in_o that_o service_n which_o be_v most_o acceptable_a to_o god_n the_o promotion_n of_o religion_n and_o reformation_n of_o manner_n in_o other_o case_n example_n raise_v a_o generous_a emulation_n they_o give_v we_o courage_n to_o attempt_v the_o most_o difficult_a undertake_n and_o constancy_n to_o endure_v the_o great_a trial_n and_o shall_v this_o be_v the_o single_a instance_n in_o which_o we_o be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o be_v outdo_v by_o all_o let_v we_o then_o blush_v and_o hang_v down_o our_o head_n when_o we_o compare_v our_o own_o slothfulness_n with_o the_o unwearyed_a labour_n of_o other_o and_o find_v ourselves_o backward_o to_o meet_v with_o difficulty_n and_o danger_n in_o a_o service_n wherein_o so_o many_o have_v cheerful_o sacrifice_v their_o life_n but_o to_o these_o primitive_a example_n give_v i_o leave_v to_o add_v one_o of_o this_o present_a age_n of_o a_o person_n eminent_a for_o the_o greatness_n of_o her_o station_n much_o more_o for_o piety_n and_o goodness_n who_o memory_n we_o all_o honour_n and_o who_o untimely_a death_n we_o yet_o bewail_v i_o mean_v our_o late_a excellent_a queen_n who_o zeal_n for_o piety_n and_o religion_n seem_v to_o our-shine_a her_o other_o excellent_a quality_n she_o be_v not_o divert_v by_o the_o solicitude_n of_o a_o crown_n from_o neglect_v any_o religious_a duty_n herself_o her_o example_n recommend_v piety_n to_o the_o world_n with_o all_o its_o native_a charm_n and_o in_o her_o appear_v all_o the_o majesty_n of_o a_o queen_n with_o the_o unaffected_a humility_n of_o the_o devout_a christian._n nothing_o go_v near_o her_o heart_n than_o that_o immorality_n and_o profaneness_n she_o perceive_v every_o where_o prevail_a and_o nothing_o with_o so_o much_o joy_n do_v she_o encourage_v as_o what_o have_v a_o tendency_n towards_o reformation_n of_o manner_n of_o which_o i_o need_v give_v but_o one_o instance_n the_o countenance_n she_o give_v the_o society_n for_o reformation_n in_o england_n for_o as_o we_o learn_v from_o a_o very_a pious_a and_o useful_a book_n entitle_v 8.9_o pag._n 8.9_o a_o account_n of_o the_o society_n for_o reformation_n of_o manner_n etc._n etc._n have_v this_o affair_n lay_v before_o she_o in_o the_o absence_n of_o the_o king_n by_o a_o prelate_n of_o great_a learning_n and_o fame_n the_o late_a lord_n bishop_n of_o worcester_n she_o have_v just_a sentiment_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o think_v it_o become_v she_o to_o give_v it_o countenance_n she_o gracious_o condescend_v to_o thank_v those_o who_o be_v concern_v in_o it_o and_o ready_o promise_v they_o her_o assistance_n and_o afterward_o upon_o application_n make_v to_o her_o majesty_n she_o be_v please_v to_o send_v her_o letter_n to_o the_o justice_n of_o middlesex_n
cause_n of_o their_o anger_n be_v the_o penalty_n they_o suffer_v the_o manner_n of_o the_o information_n only_o a_o pretence_n let_v they_o swear_v on_o and_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o their_o oath_n and_o they_o will_v be_v very_o modest_a in_o their_o censure_n of_o private_a information_n i_o suppose_v than_o it_o will_v be_v grant_v that_o private_a information_n be_v just_a if_o they_o be_v true_a that_o which_o make_v a_o information_n unjust_a be_v the_o falsehood_n of_o it_o and_o whither_o information_n shall_v be_v public_a or_o private_a be_v rather_o a_o consideration_n of_o expediency_n than_o justice_n there_o be_v some_o case_n in_o which_o private_a information_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v allow_v there_o be_v other_o in_o which_o they_o be_v high_o necessary_a the_o reason_n why_o in_o most_o case_n information_n ought_v to_o be_v public_a be_v to_o prevent_v and_o discourage_v perjury_n and_o revenge_n for_o if_o all_o information_n be_v to_o be_v private_a and_o the_o informer_n never_o know_v nor_o punish_v when_o they_o deserve_v it_o than_o no_o man_n can_v be_v secure_a either_o of_o his_o fortune_n or_o his_o life_n but_o if_o none_o of_o these_o ill_a consequence_n can_v attend_v private_a information_n against_o swear_v if_o they_o be_v no_o encouragement_n to_o wilful_a perjury_n and_o at_o the_o same_o time_n be_v high_o necessary_a to_o suppress_v that_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o original_a cause_n of_o most_o perjury_n take_v off_o all_o reverence_n for_o god_n and_o a_o oath_n if_o the_o case_n be_v so_o than_o i_o think_v such_o private_a information_n be_v very_o free_a from_o injustice_n now_o to_o be_v convince_v of_o this_o i_o will_v have_v you_o consider_v that_o whoever_o know_o perjure_v himself_o to_o injure_v another_o must_v be_v suppose_v to_o do_v it_o either_o to_o procure_v some_o temporal_a advantage_n or_o to_o prevent_v some_o great_a evil_n or_o to_o gratify_v his_o passion_n of_o revenge_n it_o argue_v the_o most_o uncharitable_a savage_a temper_n to_o believe_v that_o any_o man_n will_v go_v deliberate_o about_o the_o sin_n of_o perjury_n without_o any_o motive_n inducement_n or_o temptation_n that_o he_o will_v at_o the_o same_o time_n dishonour_n god_n wrong_v his_o neighbour_n and_o contract_v the_o gild_n of_o a_o very_a heinous_a sin_n himself_o and_o yet_o gratify_v no_o passion_n by_o it_o neither_o excite_v any_o hope_n of_o reward_n nor_o remove_v any_o fear_n of_o punishment_n nor_o calm_v any_o violent_a resentment_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v real_o the_o case_n with_o respect_n to_o private_a information_n against_o swear_v the_o informer_n be_v to_o have_v no_o share_n in_o what_o the_o swearer_n be_v force_v to_o pay_v nor_o be_v the_o magistrate_n further_o concern_v than_o to_o execute_v the_o law_n the_o money_n be_v whole_o for_o the_o use_n of_o the_o poor_a nor_o can_v the_o poor_a be_v wrong_v of_o what_o they_o be_v thus_o entitle_v to_o unless_o there_o be_v a_o confederacy_n of_o the_o informer_n and_o magistrate_n of_o the_o minister_n churchwarden_n and_o overseer_n of_o the_o poor_a to_o do_v it_o and_o as_o none_o be_v tempt_v by_o reward_n to_o perjure_n themselves_o neither_o be_v they_o move_v by_o fear_n they_o suffer_v no_o penalty_n if_o they_o do_v not_o inform_v none_o will_v be_v angry_a if_o they_o forbear_v but_o they_o will_v be_v sure_a of_o hatred_n if_o they_o do_v it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v one_o sort_n of_o fear_n have_v some_o influence_n upon_o they_o and_o that_o be_v the_o fear_n of_o the_o great_a god_n of_o heaven_n they_o be_v under_o too_o great_a a_o awe_n of_o that_o infinite_a be_v not_o to_o bring_v those_o to_o punishment_n who_o dare_v profane_a his_o name_n then_o as_o to_o revenge_n that_o can_v never_o be_v a_o motive_n with_o our_o informer_n to_o be_v guilty_a of_o perjury_n have_v no_o personal_a acquaintance_n with_o most_o of_o those_o against_o who_o they_o do_v inform_v and_o have_v never_o receive_v the_o least_o injury_n from_o they_o some_o i_o know_v will_v be_v apt_a to_o say_v that_o many_o even_o true_a information_n proceed_v from_o malice_n and_o resentment_n from_o quarrel_n and_o a_o revengeful_a spirit_n and_o certain_o of_o all_o man_n common_a swearer_n have_v most_o reason_n to_o believe_v that_o they_o will_v meet_v with_o the_o effect_n of_o other_o man_n displeasure_n since_o they_o must_v be_v conscious_a to_o themselves_o that_o by_o their_o rage_n and_o passion_n they_o have_v often_o not_o only_o affront_v god_n but_o provoke_v their_o neighbour_n and_o no_o man_n will_v pity_v they_o if_o this_o be_v sometime_o their_o own_o case_n nor_o can_v that_o be_v condemn_v as_o revenge_n which_o go_v no_o far_a than_o the_o execution_n of_o a_o just_a and_o reasonable_a law_n but_o there_o be_v no_o great_a ground_n among_o we_o for_o this_o uncharitable_a observation_n the_o most_o diligent_a informer_n be_v free_a from_o revenge_n and_o who_o wish_v the_o guilty_a person_n no_o great_a harm_n than_o repentance_n and_o reformation_n yet_o suppose_v it_o shall_v be_v so_o that_o malice_n or_o revenge_n be_v at_o the_o bottom_n of_o some_o information_n of_o such_o every_o good_a man_n will_v say_v with_o st._n paul_n in_o another_o case_n so_o swear_v be_v suppress_v whither_o it_o be_v do_v out_o of_o strife_n or_o good_a will_n i_o do_v rejoice_v yea_o and_o will_v rejoice_v phi._n 1.15_o it_o be_v true_a when_o a_o man_n life_n or_o estate_n be_v at_o stake_n it_o be_v reasonable_a he_o shall_v be_v public_o try_v and_o confront_v with_o his_o accuser_n and_o it_o be_v a_o great_a excellency_n in_o our_o law_n that_o it_o require_v such_o public_a trial_n so_o that_o no_o man_n shall_v be_v condemn_v without_o be_v allow_v to_o make_v his_o defence_n but_o when_o a_o pecuniary_a mulct_n be_v all_o the_o punishment_n to_o be_v inflict_v on_o a_o swearer_n for_o a_o sin_n hateful_a to_o god_n and_o man_n he_o be_v entitle_v to_o no_o such_o favour_n the_o law_n against_o swear_v be_v just_o which_o in_o other_o case_n will_v seem_v severe_a that_o sin_n have_v no_o temptation_n to_o extenuate_v its_o gild_n and_o therefore_o the_o utmost_a rigour_n of_o the_o law_n be_v but_o too_o gentle_a a_o punishment_n for_o it_o and_o indeed_o it_o be_v very_o plain_a that_o our_o lawmakers_n design_n be_v that_o swearer_n shall_v be_v treat_v after_o another_o manner_n than_o most_o other_o criminal_n because_o by_o the_o statute_n against_o swear_v the_o oath_n of_o one_o person_n be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v they_o liable_a to_o the_o penalty_n of_o it_o and_o that_o it_o be_v their_o intention_n that_o the_o informer_n shall_v in_o many_o case_n be_v keep_v secret_a at_o least_o that_o a_o discretionary_a power_n shall_v be_v lodge_v in_o the_o magistrate_n to_o conceal_v they_o when_o he_o see_v a_o reasonable_a cause_n of_o so_o do_v we_o have_v reason_n to_o believe_v from_o hence_o because_o they_o can_v not_o but_o foresee_v that_o the_o constant_a discovery_n of_o the_o informer_n must_v needs_o discourage_v many_o from_o inform_v and_o prove_v a_o great_a obstruction_n to_o the_o due_a execution_n of_o the_o law_n if_o not_o render_v it_o entire_o useless_a beside_o private_a information_n be_v much_o more_o allowable_a against_o swear_v than_o in_o any_o other_o case_n that_o can_v happen_v for_o he_o who_o inform_v against_o a_o swearer_n proceed_v upon_o very_o different_a motive_n from_o those_o who_o inform_v against_o felon_n or_o traitor_n or_o be_v witness_n in_o dispute_n betwixt_o particular_a men._n in_o case_n of_o felony_n those_o who_o be_v injure_v prosecute_v the_o felon_n and_o spare_v neither_o expense_n nor_o trouble_n to_o find_v out_o the_o truth_n they_o will_v invite_v man_n to_o a_o discovery_n by_o proposal_n of_o reward_n and_o can_v compel_v those_o who_o may_v be_v otherwise_o unwilling_a to_o declare_v upon_o oath_n what_o they_o know_v and_o the_o same_o method_n be_v take_v in_o all_o dispute_n at_o law_n in_o case_n of_o treason_n honour_n preferment_n and_o estate_n be_v promise_v and_o liberal_o bestow_v to_o encourage_v information_n and_o it_o be_v necessary_a it_o shall_v be_v so_o the_o public_a safety_n be_v so_o near_o concern_v but_o they_o who_o inform_v against_o swearer_n have_v no_o reward_n to_o tempt_v they_o nor_o be_v they_o compel_v by_o any_o fear_n from_o man_n they_o suffer_v nothing_o if_o they_o do_v not_o inform_v they_o gain_v nothing_o if_o they_o do_v and_o be_v act_v only_o by_o a_o generous_a zeal_n for_o the_o honour_n and_o servi●e_v of_o god._n it_o be_v hard_a i_o confess_v if_o not_o impossible_a for_o law_n to_o be_v so_o contrive_v but_o some_o way_n or_o other_o they_o may_v be_v pervert_v and_o abuse_v but_o in_o the_o case_n now_o before_o we_o i_o think_v the_o question_n be_v not_o whither_o
