be_v move_v or_o lose_v the_o gate_n of_o hell_n shall_v not_o prevail_v against_o the_o church_n by_o reason_n hereof_o upon_o this_o and_o such_o like_a promise_n it_o be_v that_o faith_n be_v not_o lose_v and_o not_o by_o any_o virtue_n which_o it_o have_v in_o itself_o or_o by_o it_o own_o nature_n let_v this_o be_v the_o first_o answer_n second_o as_o i_o say_v this_o light_n of_o nature_n can_v be_v quite_o put_v out_o but_o only_o bury_v so_o faith_n may_v be_v bury_v hide_a and_o drive_v into_o some_o corner_n but_o it_o can_v be_v whole_o put_v out_o where_o it_o be_v once_o true_o and_o good_a for_o evil_n it_o see_v not_o so_o much_o as_o there_o be_v a_o god_n or_o that_o god_n be_v to_o be_v worship_v now_o to_o come_v to_o the_o very_a scope_n of_o these_o word_n mark_v the_o end_n of_o they_o why_o christ_n use_v they_o it_o be_v to_o show_v that_o man_n can_v not_o discern_v when_o they_o seek_v for_o earthly_a riches_n before_o heavenly_a and_o the_o evil_a eye_n corrupt_a and_o blind_a by_o nature_n be_v the_o cause_n why_o man_n can_v distinguish_v thing_n that_o differ_v from_o the_o scope_n one_o profitable_a admonition_n must_v be_v renew_a that_o be_v to_o labour_v to_o attain_v the_o gift_n of_o discern_v to_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o earthly_a and_o heavenly_a thing_n therefore_o let_v we_o search_v the_o scripture_n that_o we_o may_v have_v our_o eye_n enlighten_v and_o so_o see_v the_o right_a way_n to_o eternal_a life_n for_o the_o want_n of_o this_o discern_a be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o disorder_n and_o particular_o of_o this_o disorder_n in_o prefer_v temporal_a and_o earthly_a thing_n before_o eternal_a and_o heavenly_a and_o by_o this_o you_o may_v walk_v with_o comfort_n and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n the_o way_n to_o life_n eternal_a whereas_o without_o it_o you_o wander_v in_o darkness_n all_o the_o day_n of_o your_o life_n 24._o no_o man_n can_v serve_v two_o master_n for_o either_o he_o shall_v hate_v the_o one_o and_o love_n the_o other_o or_o else_o he_o shall_v lean_v to_o the_o one_o and_o despise_v the_o other_o you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o mammon_n or_o riches_n we_o have_v hear_v of_o two_o commandment_n of_o christ_n first_o negative_a in_o the_o 19_o verse_n the_o second_o affirmative_a in_o the_o 20._o verse_n and_o afterward_o a_o objection_n answer_v in_o the_o 22._o verse_n now_o he_o remove_v another_o impediment_n the_o former_a objection_n be_v this_o if_o our_o treasure_n must_v be_v lay_v up_o in_o heaven_n and_o not_o here_o on_o earth_n it_o be_v marvel_n that_o so_o many_o lie_v up_o treasure_n here_o and_o not_o in_o heaven_n the_o answer_n hereof_o be_v they_o have_v either_o a_o blind_a eye_n or_o a_o evil_a eye_n and_o so_o want_v the_o gift_n of_o discern_v now_o in_o this_o verse_n he_o meet_v with_o a_o other_o objection_n which_o the_o carnal_a wisdom_n of_o man_n make_v common_o and_o have_v ever_o make_v against_o these_o commandment_n and_o it_o be_v thus_o why_o may_v we_o not_o love_n and_o serve_v god_n and_o serve_v mammon_n too_o some_o man_n flatter_v and_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o they_o may_v serve_v god_n &_o yet_o set_v their_o heart_n to_o seek_v riches_n too_o and_o therefore_o they_o think_v that_o they_o may_v seek_v earthly_a riches_n &_o heavenly_a riches_n both_o together_o and_o that_o one_o do_v not_o hinder_v a_o other_o but_o that_o one_o may_v have_v both_o treasure_n in_o earth_n and_o treasure_n in_o heaven_n here_o therefore_o christ_n meet_v with_o this_o carnal_a conceit_n of_o natural_a man_n and_o prove_v it_o to_o be_v impossible_a that_o one_o man_n shall_v practice_v both_o these_o thus_o you_o see_v how_o this_o verse_n do_v depend_v on_o the_o former_a and_o this_o will_v the_o better_o appear_v if_o we_o seek_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o word_n no_o man_n can_v serve_v two_o master_n etc._n etc._n it_o may_v seem_v at_o the_o first_o to_o be_v otherwise_o for_o both_o in_o reason_n and_o also_o by_o experience_n one_o servant_n may_v serve_v two_o diverse_a master_n as_o we_o see_v one_o factor_n may_v and_o do_v well_o serve_v diveser_fw-ge merchant_n therefore_o how_o can_v this_o be_v that_o christ_n say_v here_o some_o answer_n it_o thus_o that_o the_o word_n must_v be_v conceive_v after_o this_o manner_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v two_o diverse_a or_o contrary_a master_n as_o for_o example_n when_o one_o shall_v say_v come_v and_o a_o other_o shall_v say_v come_v not_o when_o two_o master_n be_v thus_o contrary_a &_o diverse_a in_o their_o mind_n and_o will_n one_o servant_n can_v serve_v both_o and_o so_o these_o word_n carry_v a_o holy_a truth_n but_o this_o clause_n of_o diverse_a and_o contrary_a be_v not_o express_v therefore_o i_o say_v further_o that_o this_o sentence_n be_v a_o common_a proverb_n among_o they_o now_o in_o a_o proverb_n if_o it_o be_v usual_o or_o general_o true_a though_o it_o hold_v not_o always_o if_o it_o have_v effect_v ordinary_o it_o be_v enough_o as_o no_o prophet_n be_v honour_v in_o his_o own_o country_n that_o be_v usual_o and_o common_o it_o be_v so_o so_o this_o proverb_n be_v true_a ordinary_o and_o thus_o this_o sentence_n must_v be_v understand_v as_o a_o familiar_a proverb_n usual_a and_o common_a among_o the_o jew_n which_o christ_n take_v for_o the_o ground_n of_o his_o speech_n now_o it_o follow_v for_o either_o he_o shall_v hate_v the_o one_o that_o be_v as_o he_o be_v a_o master_n or_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o commandment_n and_o he_o shall_v love_v the_o other_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o commandment_n in_o that_o he_o do_v embrace_v it_o and_o perform_v it_o or_o else_o he_o shall_v lean_v to_o the_o one_o this_n be_v a_o illustration_n of_o the_o former_a word_n for_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o shall_v he_o be_v know_v to_o love_n or_o hate_v they_o the_o answer_n be_v thus_o love_n will_v cleave_v to_o the_o one_o and_o contemn_v the_o other_o that_o be_v a_o servant_n be_v know_v to_o love_v his_o master_n in_o his_o commandment_n first_o if_o he_o cleave_v unto_o he_o second_o if_o he_o give_v himself_o as_o a_o servant_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o commandment_n and_o he_o will_v despise_v the_o other_o that_o be_v he_o will_v neglect_v his_o commandment_n thus_o he_o testify_v his_o love_n or_o hatred_n by_o omit_v and_o neglect_v or_o by_o perform_v and_o practise_v the_o commandment_n enjoin_v he_o now_o the_o word_n that_o follow_v you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o mammon_n be_v the_o application_n of_o the_o argument_n you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o riches_n treasure_n profit_n gain_n a_o man_n can_v serve_v god_n and_o give_v himself_o to_o get_v and_o lay_v up_o riches_n it_o be_v not_o say_v you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o have_v riches_n for_o abraham_n joseph_n &_o job_n serve_v god_n and_o yet_o have_v riches_n but_o thus_o you_o can_v serve_v god_n &_o serve_v riches_n that_o be_v give_v yourselves_o to_o seek_v they_o and_o set_v your_o heart_n upon_o they_o thus_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n be_v plain_a and_o now_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o word_n will_v the_o better_o appear_v the_o objection_n be_v this_o why_o may_v we_o not_o do_v both_o viz._n lay_v up_o treasure_n in_o heaven_n and_o in_o earth_n the_o answer_n be_v no_o man_n can_v serve_v two_o master_n but_o god_n and_o mammon_n be_v two_o master_n therefore_o you_o can_v serve_v both_o these_o the_o proposition_n be_v confirm_v by_o a_o reason_n which_o be_v add_v and_o thus_o you_o see_v the_o scope_n and_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o verse_n now_o see_v what_o doctrine_n natural_o arise_v hence_o first_o it_o be_v to_o be_v mark_v that_o christ_n do_v here_o set_v down_o what_o it_o be_v to_o serve_v god_n a_o thing_n that_o every_o man_n speak_v much_o of_o yet_o a_o thing_n that_o few_o know_v and_o few_o do_v practice_v therefore_o in_o a_o word_n it_o be_v this_o to_o serve_v god_n be_v to_o love_v he_o and_o to_o cleave_v unto_o he_o and_o he_o serve_v god_n that_o do_v these_o two_o for_o the_o first_o every_o man_n will_v say_v that_o he_o
love_v god_n and_o ever_o do_v well_o then_o take_v heed_n you_o be_v not_o deceive_v for_o god_n must_v be_v love_v not_o only_o as_o he_o be_v a_o bountiful_a lord_n but_o as_o he_o be_v a_o master_n and_o do_v command_v we_o service_n he_o must_v be_v love_v in_o his_o word_n and_o commandment_n in_o his_o authority_n of_o command_v the_o write_a word_n be_v his_o will_n and_o farmer_n that_o be_v give_v himself_o to_o his_o service_n so_o here_o to_o cleave_v unto_o god_n be_v the_o resign_v up_o of_o a_o man_n self_n to_o serve_v god_n and_o to_o obey_v he_o in_o every_o commandment_n and_o to_o take_v heed_n that_o he_o suffer_v not_o himself_o to_o be_v draw_v away_o from_o obey_v any_o commandment_n and_o believe_v any_o promise_n this_o be_v do_v when_o we_o will_v not_o suffer_v ourselves_o to_o be_v separate_v from_o god_n but_o yield_v obedience_n to_o his_o commandment_n this_o be_v the_o right_n cleave_v to_o god_n contrariwise_o to_o disobey_v his_o commandment_n be_v to_o hate_n god_n &_o to_o despise_v he_o though_o no_o man_n will_v say_v he_o hate_v god_n yet_o he_o that_o do_v neglect_v his_o commandment_n and_o give_v himself_o to_o seek_v the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n be_v a_o hater_n of_o god_n he_o that_o be_v crooked_a in_o his_o way_n despise_v god_n let_v he_o protest_v what_o he_o will_v if_o he_o do_v not_o cleave_v unto_o god_n by_o obedience_n to_o his_o commandment_n he_o be_v a_o hater_n of_o god_n &_o his_o utter_a enemy_n the_o consideration_n of_o this_o part_n serve_v to_o let_v you_o understand_v the_o great_a blindness_n of_o the_o world_n for_o common_o if_o a_o man_n can_v but_o rehearse_v the_o lord_n prayer_n the_o ten_o commandment_n and_o the_o creed_n howsoever_o he_o live_v he_o serve_v god_n well_o enough_o what_o gross_a ignorance_n blindness_n and_o superstition_n be_v this_o the_o service_n of_o god_n be_v in_o obedience_n to_o his_o commandment_n to_o cleave_v unto_o he_o as_o abraham_n do_v when_o god_n say_v thou_o shall_v not_o kill_v he_o obey_v again_o when_o god_n say_v kill_v thy_o son_n he_o obey_v see_v they_o how_o this_o age_n abound_v with_o atheism_n in_o all_o place_n for_o what_o be_v he_o that_o hate_v god_n and_o despise_v he_o but_o a_o atheist_n now_o all_o they_o that_o seek_v the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n so_o much_o they_o be_v very_a atheist_n and_o no_o better_a because_o they_o hate_v he_o and_o despise_v he_o atheism_n be_v a_o common_a sin_n of_o our_o time_n the_o world_n be_v love_v mammon_n embrace_v god_n hate_v and_o the_o lord_n despise_v i_o know_v that_o man_n will_v abhor_v this_o to_o be_v challenge_v for_o atheist_n but_o christ_n have_v give_v the_o sentence_n that_o whosoever_o he_o be_v that_o do_v not_o cleave_v unto_o he_o in_o obedience_n do_v despise_v and_o hate_v god_n and_o what_o be_v that_o but_o atheism_n this_o be_v a_o mother_n sin_n &_o the_o cause_n of_o many_o more_o so_o much_o of_o the_o first_o point_n of_o the_o service_n of_o god_n second_o christ_n take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o mammon_n be_v a_o lord_n that_o riches_n be_v a_o god_n and_o that_o man_n serve_v and_o obey_v he_o as_o there_o be_v a_o true_a god_n and_o master_n by_o right_a of_o creation_n so_o there_o be_v a_o other_o by_o reason_n of_o corruption_n and_o that_o be_v riches_n treasure_n profit_n and_o gain_v of_o this_o he_o forewarn_v his_o disciple_n because_o the_o danger_n be_v great_a question_n how_o can_v this_o be_v may_v some_o say_v answer_n riches_n in_o itself_o be_v a_o good_a creature_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o be_v not_o indeed_o a_o master_n only_o the_o wicked_a and_o wretched_a hart_n of_o man_n set_v up_o a_o idol_n in_o the_o heart_n in_o stead_n of_o the_o true_a god_n and_o therefore_o covetousness_n be_v call_v idolatry_n 3._o now_o it_o be_v make_v a_o idol_n &_o a_o master_n thus_o man_n esteem_v of_o riches_n as_o of_o their_o principal_a happiness_n and_o it_o be_v the_o mind_n of_o man_n that_o make_v the_o god_n look_v where_o the_o heart_n be_v there_o be_v the_o lord_n and_o god_n second_o it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o man_n to_o trust_v in_o riches_n and_o to_o love_v they_o more_v they_o god_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o man_n be_v the_o servant_n of_o riches_n whereof_o they_o shall_v be_v master_n i_o will_v make_v it_o plain_a that_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v first_o men_z lay_z aside_o the_o service_n of_o god_n &_o neglect_v his_o worship_n for_o gain_v what_o argue_v this_o but_o that_o they_o account_v riches_n the_o principal_a good_a about_o which_o they_o spend_v most_o time_n second_o let_v a_o man_n have_v riches_n and_o he_o be_v content_a exceed_o with_o the_o abundance_n that_o god_n give_v he_o he_o be_v at_o peace_n let_v the_o same_o man_n loose_v his_o good_n and_o all_o the_o promise_n in_o the_o bible_n will_v not_o quiet_v he_o again_o let_v he_o loose_v any_o part_n of_o his_o riches_n &_o he_o will_v be_v more_o grieve_a and_o vex_v then_o for_o the_o loss_n of_o heaven_n by_o break_v god_n commandment_n what_o argue_v this_o but_o that_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n do_v honour_n riches_n as_o their_o god_n last_o i_o appeal_v to_o all_o man_n conscience_n be_v not_o every_o man_n more_o sharp_o set_v to_o gather_v earthly_a thing_n then_o to_o call_v upon_o god_n why_o all_o man_n can_v tell_v every_o one_o be_v more_o eager_a and_o earnest_a in_o seek_v riches_n so_o that_o we_o have_v as_o many_o idol_n now_o as_o ever_o we_o have_v and_o as_o many_o idolater_n for_o every_o man_n set_v up_o this_o idol_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o put_v his_o trust_n in_o it_o therefore_o it_o be_v true_a which_o christ_n take_v for_o grant_v that_o riches_n be_v a_o lord_n if_o any_o think_v themselves_o hardly_o deal_v withal_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v account_v mammonist_n and_o idolater_n serve_v riches_n let_v they_o consider_v the_o life_n of_o man_n what_o mean_v else_o the_o common_a oppression_n extortion_n usury_n engross_a of_o necessary_n what_o do_v all_o these_o argue_v but_o this_o that_o mammon_n be_v a_o great_a lord_n and_o have_v many_o servant_n and_o slave_n for_o all_o these_o be_v his_o attendant_n and_o retainer_n unto_o he_o further_o what_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o a_o dearth_n in_o time_n of_o plenty_n when_o god_n in_o mercy_n have_v vouchsafe_v we_o plenty_n and_o store_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n our_o dearth_n continue_v but_o this_o that_o mammon_n be_v a_o great_a lord_n mammon_n be_v the_o cause_n gain_n and_o lucre_n let_v it_o be_v consider_v with_o reverence_n when_o we_o have_v a_o made-famine_n by_o the_o wicked_a man_n who_o be_v slave_n and_o vassal_n of_o mammon_n there_o be_v no_o question_n but_o the_o dearth_n in_o former_a year_n which_o be_v cause_v by_o god_n hand_n be_v also_o increase_v by_o wicked_a man_n all_o these_o thing_n be_v lay_v together_o and_o consider_v it_o be_v plain_a that_o though_o all_o man_n will_v seem_v to_o embrace_v the_o gospel_n yet_o this_o be_v a_o common_a sin_n man_n give_v themselves_o to_o serve_v mammon_n indeed_o god_n have_v his_o servant_n here_o and_o elsewhere_o yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o handful_n the_o multitude_n be_v all_o mammonite_n therefore_o this_o be_v a_o certain_a truth_n and_o may_v well_o be_v take_v for_o grant_v here_o therefore_o see_v the_o vile_a nature_n of_o man_n he_o be_v make_v to_o be_v lord_n of_o mammon_n &_o yet_o he_o be_v content_a to_o become_v his_o slave_n and_o vassal_n though_o his_o state_n and_o condition_n be_v to_o be_v a_o lord_n yet_o thus_o he_o abase_v himself_o second_o in_o that_o man_n be_v common_o slave_n to_o mammon_n we_o learn_v a_o other_o lesson_n which_o christ_n teach_v we_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o be_v faithful_a in_o the_o have_v use_v keep_v and_o dispense_n of_o the_o wicked_a mammon_n it_o be_v a_o vile_a and_o a_o miserable_a thing_n for_o a_o man_n to_o subject_v himself_o to_o it_o to_o become_v his_o slave_n and_o vassal_n he_o that_o seek_v to_o be_v rich_a forsake_v god_n remember_v it_o for_o it_o be_v the_o principal_a point_n that_o christ_n prove_v here_o a_o man_n may_v have_v riches_n and_o use_v they_o and_o may_v live_v &_o die_v rich_a but_o he_o may_v not_o seek_v to_o be_v rich_a because_o than_o he_o
certain_a use_n in_o time_n to_o come_v now_o i_o answer_v to_o the_o first_o question_n viz._n how_o far_o a_o man_n may_v seek_v &_o provide_v for_o worldly_a wealth_n i_o say_v that_o thing_n necessary_a for_o nature_n for_o a_o man_n person_n &_o place_n may_v be_v seek_v for_o and_o lay_v up_o but_o here_o be_v a_o bar_n put_v in_o by_o god_n himself_o we_o may_v go_v no_o further_o we_o may_v not_o seek_v for_o abundance_n or_o superfluity_n the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v allege_v in_o the_o 30._o chapter_n of_o the_o proverbe_n the_o 8._o and_o 9_o verse_n where_o it_o be_v say_v give_v i_o not_o poverty_n nor_o riches_n feed_v i_o with_o food_n convement_n for_o i_o lest_o i_o be_v full_a and_o deny_v thou_o and_o say_v who_o be_v the_o lord_n etc._n etc._n that_o which_o we_o must_v ask_v of_o god_n that_o we_o may_v seek_v for_o and_o no_o more_o but_o we_o have_v no_o warrant_n to_o ask_v at_o god_n hand_n abundance_n or_o superfluity_n therefore_o we_o may_v not_o seek_v for_o they_o again_o if_o we_o have_v meat_n and_o drink_v we_o must_v therewith_o be_v content_a 1._o tim._n 6._o 8._o ob._n if_o we_o must_v pray_v for_o nothing_o or_o labour_n for_o nothing_o more_o than_o be_v necessary_a then_o what_o shall_v we_o do_v if_o god_n give_v abundance_n resp._n we_o must_v not_o seek_v abundance_n but_o if_o god_n cast_v it_o upon_o we_o without_o seek_v we_o must_v thankful_o receive_v it_o lay_v it_o up_o and_o use_v it_o for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o church_n and_o commonwealth_n and_o for_o the_o good_a of_o our_o own_o family_n if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o we_o must_v seek_v for_o nothing_o but_o necessary_n than_o we_o must_v learn_v contentedness_n therewith_o which_o that_o we_o may_v do_v weigh_v these_o reason_n follow_v first_o it_o be_v god_n commandment_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v content_a with_o thing_n necessary_a and_o seek_v no_o further_o therefore_o we_o must_v be_v obedient_a and_o content_a second_o a_o man_n that_o be_v too_o greedy_a to_o lay_v up_o much_o can_v hardly_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n but_o must_v needs_o use_v some_o unjust_a mean_n three_o such_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o devil_n snare_n 1._o tim._n 6._o 9_o four_o in_o persecution_n and_o time_n of_o trial_n the_o rich_a will_v hardly_o confess_v christ_n &_o hold_v out_o but_o will_v be_v the_o more_o easy_o draw_v from_o christ_n and_o the_o confession_n of_o the_o truth_n because_o their_o mind_n be_v glue_v to_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n hereunto_o may_v be_v add_v the_o example_n of_o many_o saint_n who_o have_v be_v content_v with_o little_a that_o they_o may_v serve_v god_n the_o better_a and_o also_o christ_n admonition_n how_o hard_o it_o be_v for_o a_o rich_a man_n to_o enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n thus_o much_o of_o the_o first_o practice_n of_o covetousness_n which_o be_v excessive_a seek_v of_o good_n without_o all_o measure_n the_o second_o practice_n be_v when_o worldly_a good_n be_v seek_v only_o and_o principal_o which_o practice_n christ_n meet_v withal_o when_o he_o say_v first_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n this_o be_v esau_n sin_n and_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o gadaren_n math._n 8._o who_o prefer_v worldly_a good_n before_o spiritual_a treasure_n and_o this_o may_v be_v call_v unreasonable_a disorder_n preposterousnesse_n worldliness_n etc._n man_n discern_v what_o be_v the_o principal_a good_a then_o come_v providence_n and_o use_v all_o mean_n for_o the_o compass_v of_o that_o principal_a good_a she_o foreca_v all_o the_o way_n and_o mean_n to_o come_v unto_o it_o without_o this_o our_o wisdom_n be_v not_o perfect_a and_o thus_o you_o see_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o wisdom_n it_o be_v a_o gift_n of_o god_n spirit_n to_o they_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n whereby_o they_o be_v enable_v to_o discern_v of_o thing_n that_o differ_v &_o the_o scope_n of_o our_o life_n &_o of_o true_a happiness_n and_o withal_o to_o forethink_v and_o forecast_v all_o the_o mean_n to_o come_v unto_o it_o and_o the_o single_a eye_n that_o be_v the_o single_a mind_n which_o be_v able_a to_o discern_v of_o this_o wisdom_n now_o in_o the_o next_o place_n mark_v the_o fruit_n of_o it_o the_o whole_a body_n shall_v be_v light_n that_o be_v the_o whole_a life_n shall_v be_v full_a of_o righteousness_n &_o of_o good_a success_n prou._n 8._o 19_o 20._o my_o fruit_n be_v better_a than_o gold_n and_o fine_v silver_n i_o make_v a_o man_n walk_v in_o the_o way_n of_o righteousness_n and_o the_o path_n of_o judgement_n to_o make_v some_o use_n of_o it_o consider_v this_o be_v thus_o here_o commend_v we_o be_v first_o admonish_v to_o labour_n for_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n &_o single_a eye_n the_o singular_a commendation_n of_o it_o
when_o we_o come_v by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n to_o worship_n god_n we_o turn_v god_n to_o a_o idol_n the_o natural_a man_n do_v not_o perceive_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n that_o be_v the_o mind_n natural_o know_v they_o not_o nor_o give_v any_o approbation_n or_o consent_n unto_o they_o now_o as_o man_n can_v know_v god_n sufficient_o by_o nature_n so_o he_o can_v discern_v himself_o and_o his_o own_o sin_n we_o have_v all_o this_o evil_a eye_n by_o nature_n we_o can_v not_o perceive_v that_o we_o be_v dim_a and_o dark_a sight_v not_o blind_a a_o man_n by_o nature_n can_v discern_v the_o vileness_n of_o sin_n though_o the_o conscience_n can_v judge_v somewhat_o of_o it_o yet_o the_o right_a judgement_n of_o sin_n the_o mind_n can_v perceive_v by_o nature_n for_o if_o man_n can_v do_v this_o they_o will_v not_o sin_v we_o be_v not_o able_a by_o the_o natural_a eye_n of_o our_o understanding_n to_o judge_v of_o our_o own_o frailty_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o age_a man_n think_v he_o may_v yet_o live_v long_o because_o the_o mind_n be_v corrupt_v we_o can_v discern_v the_o frailness_n of_o our_o own_o eye_n we_o can_v judge_v aright_o of_o the_o scope_n of_o our_o own_o life_n but_o nature_n teach_v we_o to_o seek_v ourselves_o more_o than_o god_n or_o our_o own_o good_a more_o than_o his_o glory_n the_o mind_n be_v unable_a to_o judge_v of_o our_o own_o happiness_n for_o this_o be_v all_o the_o wisdom_n of_o man_n to_o think_v that_o felicity_n do_v consist_v in_o outward_a and_o earthly_a thing_n as_o riches_n honour_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o we_o account_v the_o rich_a happy_a and_o the_o poor_a miserable_a therefore_o the_o first_o point_n be_v clear_a that_o the_o mind_n have_v lose_v the_o gift_n of_o judge_v and_o discern_v the_o second_o way_n that_o man_n be_v corrupt_v be_v in_o obedience_n that_o it_o be_v make_v subject_n to_o that_o which_o shall_v be_v subject_a to_o it_o namely_o the_o flesh_n yea_o it_o do_v not_o only_o follow_v the_o flesh_n but_o also_o the_o evil_a temptation_n of_o satan_n which_o be_v cast_v into_o it_o the_o mind_n be_v ready_a to_o follow_v they_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v evil_a it_o follow_v the_o example_n of_o the_o world_n and_o for_o these_o cause_v christ_n call_v it_o a_o evil_a eye_n first_o because_o it_o want_v judgement_n second_o because_o it_o obey_v that_o which_o it_o shall_v rule_v totum_fw-la corpus_fw-la tenebrae_fw-la now_o he_o show_v the_o fruit_n of_o it_o which_o be_v to_o make_v the_o whole_a body_n dark_a that_o be_v the_o whole_a life_n full_a of_o unrighteousness_n and_o darkness_n though_o the_o natural_a understanding_n have_v some_o light_n yet_o it_o be_v a_o evil_a eye_n it_o can_v discern_v in_o many_o thing_n and_o though_o it_o discern_v in_o many_o thing_n yet_o it_o obey_v not_o but_o follow_v the_o will_n thus_o much_o of_o the_o meaning_n now_o of_o the_o instruction_n which_o true_o and_o natural_o proceed_v from_o hence_o first_o always_o remember_v this_o that_o christ_n leave_v somewhat_o to_o be_v supply_v namely_o that_o this_o evil_a eye_n be_v in_o all_o man_n by_o nature_n and_o that_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o man_n can_v discern_v wherefore_o we_o be_v to_o labour_v to_o see_v and_o discern_v this_o wickedness_n of_o the_o eye_n in_o the_o mind_n it_o be_v the_o first_o step_n to_o knowledge_n to_o see_v that_o we_o can_v see_v that_o we_o can_v judge_v and_o discern_v of_o heavenly_a thing_n as_o we_o ought_v we_o shall_v never_o know_v god_n aright_o nor_o ourselves_o till_o we_o see_v that_o we_o can_v see_v also_o we_o must_v bewail_v this_o blindness_n and_o tremble_v for_o it_o the_o sense_n and_o apprehension_n of_o bodily_a darkness_n be_v grievous_a unto_o we_o much_o more_o ought_v this_o and_o as_o that_o etc._n etc._n so_o we_o ought_v to_o labour_v for_o the_o good_a eye-salue_n that_o make_v the_o blind_a eye_n to_o be_v a_o good_a eye_n and_o this_o salve_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o word_n of_o god_n apply_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n when_o the_o holy_a ghost_n open_v the_o eye_n of_o the_o understanding_n than_o our_o eye_n will_v be_v make_v single_a second_o we_o be_v teach_v to_o amend_v a_o fault_n we_o have_v here_o just_a occasion_n to_o rebuke_v a_o damnable_a fault_n which_o be_v common_a here_o and_o every_o where_o namely_o that_o man_n content_v themselves_o with_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n for_o by_o this_o evil_a eye_n any_o man_n know_v thus_o much_o namely_o 1_o that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n 2_o that_o god_n be_v good_a and_o merciful_a 3_o that_o we_o must_v love_v he_o above_o all_o and_o our_o neighbour_n as_o ourself_o 4_o that_o we_o must_v live_v well_o all_o this_o we_o know_v by_o nature_n if_o a_o man_n be_v bring_v up_o in_o the_o wilderness_n he_o may_v know_v all_o this_o without_o a_o teacher_n and_o yet_o herein_o stand_v all_o the_o knowledge_n that_o many_o have_v but_o all_o this_o be_v nothing_o wherefore_o content_v not_o yourselves_o with_o this_o think_v not_o yourselves_o good_a scholar_n in_o christ_n school_n until_o you_o know_v more_o than_o this_o come_v to_o that_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o know_v these_o thing_n it_o be_v manifest_a because_o it_o be_v here_o call_v a_o evil_a eye_n and_o make_v the_o life_n full_a of_o darkness_n for_o all_o this_o if_o we_o do_v no_o more_o than_o this_o with_o this_o we_o may_v perish_v live_v in_o darkness_n and_o die_v in_o darkness_n and_o go_v to_o everlasting_a darkness_n and_o though_o some_o plead_v that_o preacher_n can_v teach_v they_o no_o more_o than_o this_o yet_o they_o deceive_v themselves_o gross_o therefore_o remember_v this_o with_o natural_a knowledge_n join_v spiritual_a knowledge_n put_v grace_n to_o nature_n to_o help_v the_o blind_a eye_n add_v piety_n and_o supernatural_a knowledge_n to_o nature_n for_o this_o cause_n have_v care_n to_o read_v and_o search_v the_o scripture_n that_o you_o may_v attain_v to_o more_o knowledge_n than_o you_o have_v by_o nature_n if_o it_o be_v for_o nothing_o else_o but_o to_o know_v god_n commandment_n and_o promise_n for_o that_o knowledge_n serve_v for_o nothing_o else_o but_o to_o make_v a_o man_n without_o excuse_n and_o not_o to_o save_v this_o fault_n and_o sin_n be_v the_o fall_n and_o bane_n of_o many_o a_o soul_n and_o bring_v they_o to_o hell_n that_o man_n think_v themselves_o furnish_v sufficient_o for_o salvation_n if_o they_o have_v but_o a_o natural_a knowledge_n man_n content_v themselves_o with_o reformation_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o nature_n teach_v and_o look_v what_o nature_n teach_v the_o very_a blind_a eye_n see_v first_o that_o god_n must_v be_v worship_v the_o blind_a eye_n see_v and_o know_v but_o how_o he_o be_v to_o be_v worship_v he_o can_v tell_v second_o that_o we_o must_v love_v god_n and_o live_v well_o &_o deal_v just_o be_v know_v by_o nature_n and_o this_o we_o content_v ourselves_o withal_o even_o with_o evil_a conversation_n and_o natural_a reformation_n but_o this_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o the_o blind_a eye_n can_v teach_v we_o so_o much_o and_o they_o learn_v it_o and_o know_v it_o who_o life_n be_v nothing_o but_o darkness_n wherefore_o never_o content_n yourselves_o with_o natural_a reformation_n for_o if_o you_o have_v no_o more_o all_o your_o civil_a life_n be_v nothing_o but_o darkness_n before_o god_n how_o faite_z soever_o it_o seem_v to_o man_n but_o labour_n for_o a_o spiritual_a life_n that_o thy_o heart_n may_v be_v renew_a and_o thy_o life_n reform_v according_a to_o the_o gospel_n that_o this_o be_v necessary_a it_o be_v plain_a because_o christ_n say_v the_o whole_a body_n be_v dark_a without_o it_o the_o blind_a eye_n be_v not_o able_a to_o free_v it_o from_o darkness_n civility_n will_v never_o save_v thou_o thou_o must_v perish_v with_o it_o to_o proceed_v we_o learn_v that_o we_o must_v not_o be_v wise_a in_o the_o matter_n of_o forsake_v god_n when_o he_o set_v his_o hart_n upon_o riches_n i_o will_v make_v this_o more_o plain_a in_o riches_n three_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v first_o the_o get_n second_o the_o keep_n three_o the_o spend_v first_o he_o that_o seek_v to_o be_v rich_a in_o get_v of_o good_n must_v needs_o use_v much_o lie_v deceive_a and_o break_v the_o sabbath_n in_o keep_v of_o they_o if_o persecutioncome_n he_o forsake_v christ_n and_o deny_v the_o gospel_n and_o if_o any_o loss_n befall_v he_o he_o will_v resort_v to_o the_o witch_n wizard_n soothsayer_n conjurer_n and_o astrologer_n and_o all_o to_o keep_v himself_o rich_a again_o he_o can_v part_v with_o nothing_o to_o the_o poor_a because_o he_o must_v be_v rich_a therefore_o he_o can_v spare_v a_o penny_n none_o shall_v get_v aught_o at_o his_o hand_n they_o may_v starve_v at_o his_o door_n first_o and_o all_o be_v because_o he_o will_v be_v rich_a he_o have_v set_v it_o down_o and_o determine_v it_o with_o himself_o man_n grieve_v thou_o and_o thou_o be_v displease_v with_o thyself_o well_o if_o thou_o can_v say_v this_o be_v of_o good_a courage_n thou_o do_v not_o serve_v two_o master_n though_o there_o be_v in_o thou_o two_o contrary_n flesh_n and_o grace_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o two_o master_n therefore_o be_v not_o discourage_v for_o thou_o serve_v not_o both_o thou_o serve_v god_n and_o not_o the_o and_o first_o use_n of_o it_o be_v not_o for_o the_o life_n but_o it_o respect_v a_o high_a matter_n it_o serve_v for_o the_o body_n itself_o i_o say_v in_o respect_n of_o a_o certain_a shame_n that_o be_v set_v upon_o it_o the_o majesty_n of_o the_o body_n be_v lose_v and_o the_o nakedness_n of_o it_o be_v now_o a_o thing_n full_a of_o shame_n and_o confusion_n and_o our_o apparel_n serve_v to_o cover_v this_o shame_n so_o the_o proper_a and_o principal_a end_n of_o apparel_n be_v this_o to_o cover_v the_o body_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o shame_n which_o befall_v we_o after_o the_o fall_n the_o shame_n of_o our_o body_n with_o therefore_o it_o be_v as_o great_a a_o madness_n for_o any_o to_o be_v puff_v up_o because_o of_o their_o apparel_n as_o it_o be_v for_o a_o prisoner_n to_o be_v proud_a of_o the_o bolt_n on_o his_o leg_n the_o brand_n on_o his_o hand_n or_o the_o hole_n in_o his_o care_n therefore_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o think_v of_o our_o sin_n when_o we_o look_v on_o our_o apparel_n and_o to_o be_v abash_v abase_v and_o humble_v in_o remembrance_n of_o it_o we_o must_v express_v all_o the_o grace_n and_o gift_n of_o god_n that_o be_v in_o we_o so_o much_o as_o we_o can_v even_o in_o our_o apparel_n as_o sobriety_n temperance_n frugality_n &_o such_o like_a they_o be_v to_o be_v declare_v in_o the_o very_a garment_n so_o much_o of_o that_o point_n now_o it_o inordinate_a care_n for_o apparel_n example_n of_o this_o also_o be_v rise_v in_o our_o time_n when_o every_o ordinary_a man_n desire_v to_o be_v fine_a in_o apparel_n and_o no_o man_n be_v content_a with_o that_o which_o be_v decent_a and_o fit_a for_o his_o call_n but_o the_o tradesman_n his_o care_n be_v to_o be_v apparel_v like_o the_o gentleman_n the_o gentleman_n like_o the_o knight_n the_o knight_n like_o the_o noble_a man_n and_o thus_o every_o person_n affect_v the_o apparel_n of_o a_o high_a state_n yea_o every_o servant_n so_o the_o time_n be_v now_o spend_v the_o great_a part_n of_o his_o wage_n yea_o and_o more_o than_o his_o wage_n come_v to_o in_o apparel_n three_o when_o much_o time_n be_v spend_v in_o the_o curious_a apparel_v of_o the_o body_n as_o though_o we_o can_v mend_v the_o form_n of_o our_o body_n and_o as_o if_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o do_v his_o part_n sufficient_o the_o time_n and_o pain_n may_v be_v much_o better_o employ_v &_o spend_v in_o matter_n of_o salvation_n now_o to_o come_v to_o the_o point_n christ_n forbid_v not_o here_o a_o moderate_a care_n for_o raiment_n but_o the_o inordinate_a care_n to_o provide_v apparel_n superfluous_a sumptuous_a and_o curious_a which_o be_v join_v with_o the_o mispending_a of_o much_o time_n and_o money_n beyond_o our_o estate_n and_o ability_n now_o as_o i_o say_v before_o this_o inordinate_a this_o commandment_n and_o take_v heed_n that_o we_o be_v not_o careful_a inordinate_o for_o raiment_n now_o he_o come_v to_o confirm_v the_o commandment_n by_o a_o four_o reason_n set_v down_o in_o this_o 28._o verse_n and_o in_o the_o 29._o and_o the_o 30._o verse_n learn_v how_o the_o lily_n grow_v etc._n etc._n the_o reason_n be_v worthy_a and_o excellent_a though_o it_o be_v borrow_v from_o do_v often_o testify_v isaiah_n 1._o hear_v o_o heaven_n and_o hearken_v etc._n etc._n and_o ezechiel_n speak_v to_o the_o mountain_n and_o the_o prophet_n that_o be_v send_v to_o reprove_v field_n the_o second_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v because_o we_o do_v not_o learn_v the_o good_a thing_n which_o the_o creature_n can_v teach_v us._n though_o we_o have_v they_o see_v they_o and_o use_v they_o daily_o yet_o we_o do_v not_o learn_v all_o that_o of_o god_n which_o nature_n teach_v wherefore_o for_o good_a cause_n we_o be_v send_v to_o they_o to_o learn_v that_o which_o may_v be_v learn_v of_o the_o wisdom_n power_n providence_n mercy_n justice_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n be_v manifest_v in_o they_o &_o yet_o we_o mark_v it_o not_o for_o this_o cause_n christ_n know_v our_o want_n and_o behaviour_n say_v thus_o learn_v of_o the_o lily_n etc._n etc._n this_o serve_v to_o check_v we_o who_o do_v not_o learn_v so_o many_o good_a thing_n of_o god_n as_o these_o creature_n can_v teach_v how_o then_o shall_v we_o learn_v the_o doctrine_n of_o salvation_n so_o much_o for_o this_o point_n that_o christ_n say_v learn_v of_o the_o lily_n and_o by_o learning_n consider_v now_o what_o be_v the_o thing_n to_o be_v learn_v of_o the_o lily_n how_o they_o grow_v this_o be_v the_o point_n to_o be_v learned_a and_o consider_v they_o grow_v though_o they_o labour_v not_o nor_o spin_v and_o solomon_n himself_o be_v not_o clothe_v like_o one_o of_o these_o and_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n worth_a the_o mark_v for_o in_o the_o winter_n they_o be_v bury_v in_o the_o earth_n &_o appear_v no_o more_o than_o if_o they_o shall_v never_o be_v see_v and_o yet_o in_o the_o spring_n time_n of_o the_o year_n they_o grow_v up_o with_o stalk_n leaf_n flower_n and_o goodly_a colour_n now_o the_o point_n to_o be_v mark_v be_v this_o how_o all_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v they_o themselves_o do_v nothing_o neither_o do_v man_n any_o thing_n to_o make_v they_o grow_v what_o be_v it_o then_o that_o make_v they_o grow_v the_o cause_n be_v the_o word_n of_o creation_n which_o be_v give_v out_o by_o the_o creator_n in_o the_o beginning_n to_o the_o herb_n let_v the_o earth_n necessary_a if_o they_o trust_v in_o he_o this_o word_n be_v certain_a set_v down_o and_o as_o unchangeable_a as_o the_o word_n of_o creation_n if_o man_n believe_v it_o they_o shall_v have_v meat_n drink_n and_o cloth_n as_o certain_o as_o the_o flower_n and_o herb_n and_o grass_n come_v out_o of_o the_o earth_n this_o be_v the_o point_n here_o offer_v to_o our_o consideration_n they_o grow_v by_o the_o virtue_n of_o god_n
&_o to_o practice_v these_o three_o thing_n so_o long_o as_o you_o live_v for_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n stand_v all_o your_o happiness_n joy_n peace_n felicity_n and_o blessing_n out_o of_o it_o be_v nothing_o but_o grief_n woe_n and_o horror_n unspeakable_a all_o joy_n and_o comfort_n whatsoever_o can_v be_v wish_v or_o think_v of_o be_v in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o grace_n and_o glory_n both_o good_a and_o bad_a but_o there_o be_v a_o second_o gate_n and_o that_o be_v when_o a_o man_n be_v regenerate_v and_o convert_v than_o he_o first_o set_v his_o foot_n within_o the_o city_n all_o before_o be_v but_o the_o suburb_n and_o may_v be_v perform_v of_o hypocrite_n only_o the_o child_n of_o god_n pass_v this_o gate_n therefore_o content_v not_o yourselves_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o to_o be_v count_v christian_n for_o all_o this_o be_v nothing_o more_o than_o the_o hypocrite_n may_v do_v but_o labour_n to_o become_v new_a creature_n that_o christ_n the_o fountain_n of_o wisdom_n have_v teach_v it_o the_o right_a way_n commend_v by_o christ_n be_v above_o all_o thing_n to_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n to_o seek_v to_o be_v govern_v by_o god_n spirit_n and_o to_o serve_v he_o in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n this_o be_v the_o right_a way_n and_o none_o other_o therefore_o let_v every_o one_o mark_v it_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v plain_a the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n be_v the_o principal_a good_a of_o man_n meat_n drink_n and_o cloth_n and_o such_o like_a be_v but_o dependence_n which_o appertain_v unto_o it_o this_o be_v the_o principal_a therefore_o he_o that_o will_v obtain_v these_o and_o have_v good_a success_n with_o they_o shall_v first_o seek_v god_n kingdom_n for_o these_o be_v entail_v together_o when_o the_o ark_n be_v in_o the_o house_n of_o obed._n edom_n his_o house_n prosper_v all_o the_o while_n if_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o ark_n bring_v such_o a_o blessing_n much_o more_o god_n kingdom_n yea_o as_o david_n say_v whatsoever_o he_o do_v it_o shall_v prosper_v psal._n 1_o to_o come_v near_o ourselves_o we_o have_v have_v great_a peace_n a_o long_a time_n and_o the_o main_a and_o principal_a kingdom_n first_o and_o labour_n for_o repentance_n and_o regeneration_n and_o thou_o shall_v find_v god_n blessing_n object_n how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v then_o that_o we_o have_v so_o many_o beggar_n answer_n they_o be_v a_o curse_a generation_n which_o live_v out_o of_o all_o order_n neither_o obey_v god_n law_n nor_o man_n and_o therefore_o god_n curse_n be_v upon_o they_o to_o death_n be_v to_o seek_v god_n kingdom_n labour_v to_o enter_v into_o it_o in_o this_o life_n and_o the_o lord_n will_v provide_v for_o thou_o the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v to_o all_o merchant_n tradesman_n and_o handicraft_n artificibus_fw-la &_o opificibus_fw-la who_o live_v by_o buy_v and_o sell_v or_o work_v in_o a_o word_n whatsoever_o you_o be_v man_n or_o woman_n high_a or_o low_o old_a or_o young_a make_v conscience_n of_o this_o have_v thou_o child_n and_o will_v thou_o make_v they_o portion_n and_o maintain_v they_o to_o thy_o own_o and_o their_o comfort_n labour_n for_o this_o and_o this_o be_v the_o best_a dowry_n and_o inheritance_n that_o thou_o can_v give_v they_o therefore_o see_v this_o be_v so_o i_o must_v renew_v my_o exhortation_n let_v not_o the_o devil_n steal_v away_o this_o doctrine_n nor_o your_o own_o corruption_n banish_v it_o let_v master_n minister_n and_o magistrate_n every_o one_o in_o his_o place_n labour_v to_o set_v up_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n last_o let_v all_o person_n whether_o public_a or_o private_a labour_n for_o this_o while_o they_o live_v every_o man_n talk_v of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n when_o he_o die_v but_o we_o must_v enter_v while_o we_o live_v or_o

the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n this_o be_v the_o second_o point_n to_o be_v remember_v that_o all_o these_o be_v annex_v to_o that_o this_o appear_v thus_o when_o man_n seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o kingdom_n of_o glory_n god_n will_v give_v they_o these_o and_o more_o too_o beside_o the_o kingdom_n which_o be_v the_o only_a thing_n which_o he_o must_v aim_v at_o he_o do_v cast_v unto_o they_o sufficient_a blessing_n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o this_o temporal_a life_n so_o that_o all_o temporal_a blessing_n appertain_v to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n they_o depend_v upon_o it_o &_o be_v annex_v unto_o it_o and_o hereupon_o sundry_a other_o instruction_n may_v be_v gather_v if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o all_o temporal_a blessing_n depend_v on_o god_n kingdom_n they_o we_o for_o the_o most_o part_n live_v after_o a_o most_o preposterous_a order_n and_o manner_n for_o we_o care_v more_o for_o the_o body_n than_o we_o do_v for_o the_o soul_n for_o this_o life_n more_o than_o for_o the_o life_n to_o come_v more_o for_o meat_n and_o drink_v then_o for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n general_o the_o care_n of_o most_o man_n be_v all_o for_o the_o world_n and_o there_o be_v little_a or_o no_o care_n for_o the_o life_n to_o come_v we_o may_v see_v our_o folly_n in_o the_o folly_n of_o child_n they_o be_v better_o please_v with_o a_o nut_n or_o a_o apple_n then_o with_o a_o promise_n of_o great_a revenue_n or_o of_o a_o great_a inheritance_n and_o we_o have_v more_o regard_n of_o temporal_a blessing_n than_o we_o have_v of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o these_o be_v but_o dependence_n to_o that_o second_o we_o be_v teach_v to_o seek_v for_o riches_n and_o temporal_a blessing_n with_o the_o same_o mind_n with_o which_o we_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n that_o be_v with_o a_o honest_a heart_n for_o they_o depend_v one_o upon_o a_o other_o we_o must_v seek_v this_o kingdom_n of_o god_n with_o a_o upright_o heart_n and_o so_o we_o must_v seek_v riches_n with_o a_o good_a heart_n and_o honest_a deal_n use_v no_o unjust_a mean_n and_o as_o we_o be_v to_o seek_v they_o thus_o so_o we_o must_v use_v they_o when_o we_o have_v they_o for_o this_o end_n to_o further_a god_n kingdom_n with_o the_o same_o for_o riches_n be_v thing_n that_o depend_v upon_o that_o &_o therefore_o aught_o to_o serve_v to_o this_o end_n three_o if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o riches_n be_v dependence_n on_o god_n kingdom_n than_o he_o that_o have_v no_o right_a to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o be_v not_o in_o it_o have_v no_o right_a to_o any_o temporal_a blessing_n for_o they_o be_v annex_v one_o to_o a_o other_o turk_n and_o infidel_n have_v temporal_a blessing_n from_o god_n and_o enjoy_v they_o an._n they_o have_v they_o but_o by_o permission_n from_o god_n they_o have_v no_o right_a nor_o title_n to_o they_o indeed_o and_o in_o conscience_n i_o grant_v in_o civil_a court_n and_o in_o a_o civil_a respect_n they_o have_v a_o right_n unto_o they_o and_o a_o propriety_n in_o they_o but_o in_o conscience_n &_o before_o god_n they_o have_v none_o at_o all_o as_o many_o as_o be_v out_o of_o god_n kingdom_n whatsoever_o they_o be_v they_o have_v no_o right_n to_o any_o temporal_a blessing_n nor_o to_o any_o creature_n but_o be_v very_a thief_n and_o mere_a usurper_n before_o god_n though_o they_o have_v right_a to_o they_o before_o man_n let_v this_o be_v remember_v that_o they_o have_v no_o right_n to_o the_o meat_n that_o they_o eat_v to_o the_o clothes_n they_o put_v on_o nor_o to_o the_o ground_n they_o go_v on_o this_o show_v what_o vile_a and_o miserable_a wretch_n we_o be_v so_o long_o as_o we_o be_v out_o of_o god_n kingdom_n we_o have_v no_o right_a so_o much_o as_o to_o the_o very_a breath_n which_o we_o draw_v in_o at_o our_o nostril_n nor_o to_o the_o bread_n we_o put_v into_o our_o mouth_n etc._n etc._n but_o all_o the_o creature_n be_v against_o us._n and_o this_o be_v without_o question_n the_o state_n of_o all_o and_o every_o man_n that_o be_v out_o of_o god_n kingdom_n by_o which_o we_o see_v what_o miserable_a wretch_n we_o be_v much_o less_o have_v we_o any_o spiritual_a blessing_n wherewith_o to_o comfort_v ourselves_o further_o if_o this_o be_v a_o truth_n this_o must_v be_v a_o inducement_n to_o every_o one_o to_o remember_v the_o lesson_n teach_v before_o namely_o above_o all_o thing_n to_o seek_v to_o get_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n for_o till_o then_o we_o be_v most_o miserable_a we_o have_v no_o comfort_n in_o any_o creature_n or_o blessing_n of_o god_n nay_o the_o creature_n that_o be_v in_o our_o hand_n we_o have_v no_o right_n unto_o they_o we_o have_v not_o so_o much_o right_n as_o the_o beast_n have_v if_o there_o be_v no_o more_o reason_n but_o this_o one_o take_v from_o our_o miserable_a state_n so_o long_o as_o we_o be_v out_o of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n this_o one_o ought_v to_o be_v a_o spur_n unto_o we_o to_o make_v we_o seek_v it_o nay_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v at_o no_o rest_n till_o we_o be_v persuade_v out_o of_o god_n word_n that_o we_o be_v in_o that_o kingdom_n we_o shall_v give_v our_o soul_n no_o rest_n day_n noâ—_n night_n till_o we_o be_v resolve_v of_o this_o that_o we_o be_v within_o the_o kingdom_n of_o grace_n now_o while_o we_o be_v live_v upon_o earth_n and_o therefore_o i_o add_v this_o because_o we_o be_v thus_o miserable_a as_o you_o see_v till_o we_o be_v in_o it_o quest._n and_o that_o you_o may_v the_o better_a know_v when_o you_o be_v in_o it_o remember_v but_o thus_o much_o when_o you_o be_v regenerate_v than_o you_o enter_v but_o you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v we_o know_v when_o we_o be_v regenerate_v answer_n when_o you_o begin_v to_o be_v touch_v in_o conscience_n with_o your_o sin_n and_o to_o be_v displease_v with_o yourselves_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o your_o nature_n and_o the_o sin_n of_o your_o life_n and_o withal_o begin_v to_o hunger_n after_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o to_o frame_v your_o life_n according_a to_o god_n commandment_n than_o you_o be_v regenerate_v and_o then_o you_o enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n you_o obtain_v it_o and_o have_v right_a unto_o it_o therefore_o if_o you_o will_v have_v a_o entrance_n into_o it_o labour_v to_o be_v touch_v &_o grieve_v for_o your_o sin_n in_o heart_n and_o conscience_n labour_v to_o feel_v your_o need_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o his_o blood_n and_o have_v a_o care_n to_o put_v your_o neck_n under_o his_o yoke_n and_o when_o these_o thing_n be_v in_o you_o whatsoever_o you_o have_v be_v before_o though_o the_o vile_a sinner_n that_o ever_o be_v you_o enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n again_o if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o temporal_a thing_n be_v but_o dependence_n we_o be_v teach_v that_o when_o any_o calamity_n or_o loss_n befall_v we_o whether_o it_o be_v of_o good_n friend_n or_o good_a name_n we_o oght_v then_o to_o stay_v ourselves_o and_o not_o to_o suffer_v ourselves_o to_o be_v overwhelm_v with_o immoderate_a sorrow_n and_o grief_n for_o when_o the_o great_a loss_n come_v that_o can_v be_v of_o worldly_a thing_n what_o be_v it_o but_o of_o thing_n that_o depend_v on_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n the_o kingdom_n itself_o be_v not_o lose_v what_o though_o thou_o lose_v the_o favour_n and_o countenance_n of_o man_n and_o thy_o reputation_n and_o estimation_n among_o they_o or_o some_o part_n of_o thy_o good_n this_o cause_v not_o the_o loss_n of_o the_o kingdom_n the_o right_a and_o title_n of_o that_o may_v stand_v good_a notwithstanding_o all_o these_o therefore_o we_o must_v moderate_v our_o grief_n with_o this_o consideration_n and_o thus_o christ_n comfort_v his_o disciple_n in_o their_o affliction_n fear_v not_o little_a flock_n for_o it_o be_v your_o father_n pleasure_n to_o give_v you_o a_o kingdom_n the_o three_o point_n of_o doctrine_n to_o be_v gather_v hence_o be_v this_o that_o god_n be_v a_o bountiful_a god_n and_o his_o
