keep_v not_o thy_o law_n the_o word_n have_v brief_o these_o river_n in_o their_o channel_n and_o course_n they_o run_v down_o my_o eye_n in_o their_o spring_n and_o cause_n to_o wit_v his_o sympathy_n with_o god_n law_n break_v by_o man_n in_o the_o latter_a clause_n of_o the_o verse_n because_o they_o keep_v not_o thy_o law_n but_o both_o together_o clear_o teach_v we_o that_o godly_a man_n be_v affect_v with_o deep_a sorrow_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o ungodly_a more_o particular_o consider_v 1_o the_o object_n of_o this_o affection_n 2_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o 3_o the_o degree_n or_o measure_n of_o it_o 4_o it_o subject_n the_o object_n be_v the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n or_o to_o take_v it_o as_o in_o the_o text_n in_o concreto_fw-la men_n transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n they_o keep_v not_o thy_o law_n it_o be_v true_a the_o whole_a creation_n groan_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n in_o effect_n of_o it_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v but_o sin_n his_o law_n neither_o while_o it_o remain_v such_o can_v it_o be_v rom._n 8._o 6._o and_o this_o grief_n will_v go_v the_o deep_a by_o remember_v from_o whence_o he_o be_v fall_v when_o he_o be_v new_o come_v forth_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o maker_n that_o image_n of_o god_n that_o he_o stamp_v upon_o he_o shine_v bright_a in_o his_o soul_n the_o whole_a frame_n of_o it_o be_v regular_a and_o comely_a the_o inferior_a faculty_n obey_v the_o high_a anâ—_n all_o of_o they_o subject_n unto_o god_n but_o how_o soon_o be_v he_o seduce_v and_o then_o what_o a_o great_a change_n ensue_v less_o obey_v and_o keep_v it_o hence_o be_v that_o complaint_n of_o the_o psalmist_n often_o than_o once_o they_o be_v all_o go_v out_o of_o the_o way_n and_o become_v abominable_a there_o be_v discern_a eye_n that_o behold_v it_o these_o river_n of_o tear_n the_o great_a part_n not_o know_v the_o true_a god_n nor_o the_o true_a religion_n and_o the_o true_a way_n of_o his_o worship_n and_o for_o those_o that_o do_v yet_o how_o unlike_a be_v they_o to_o it_o in_o their_o life_n the_o reform_a church_n this_o way_n how_o unreformed_a in_o a_o great_a part_n but_o more_o particular_o to_o branch_v this_o out_o a_o little_a in_o several_a sort_n of_o man_n this_o godly_a grief_n be_v a_o very_a large_a sphere_n it_o will_v extend_v to_o remote_a people_n remote_a every_o way_n not_o only_o in_o place_n but_o in_o manner_n and_o religion_n even_o to_o heathen_n and_o gross_a idolater_n yea_o the_o very_a sin_n of_o enemy_n and_o of_o such_o as_o be_v profess_v enemy_n to_o god_n yet_o move_v the_o tender-hearted_a christian_a to_o sorrow_n and_o compassion_n of_o who_o i_o now_o tell_v you_o weep_v that_o they_o be_v enemy_n to_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n philip._n 3._o 18._o enemy_n and_o yet_o he_o speak_v of_o they_o weep_v what_o he_o write_v concern_v they_o he_o will_v have_v write_v in_o tear_n if_o that_o have_v be_v legible_a thus_o you_o see_v the_o extension_n of_o this_o grief_n but_o yet_o out_o of_o all_o question_n it_o will_v be_v more_o intensive_a in_o particular_n of_o near_a concernment_n it_o be_v the_o burden_n of_o the_o pious_a so_o to_o speak_v most_o sensible_a of_o those_o and_o therefore_o the_o godly_a man_n be_v so_o too_o whether_o they_o be_v the_o continual_a enormity_n of_o licentious_a and_o profane_a person_n which_o be_v by_o external_a profession_n in_o the_o face_n of_o the_o visible_a church_n though_o indeed_o they_o be_v in_o it_o but_z as_o spot_n and_o blemish_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v or_o whether_o it_o be_v the_o apostasy_n of_o hypocrite_n or_o which_o sometime_o fall_v out_o the_o gross_a fall_n of_o true_a convert_v all_o these_o be_v the_o great_a grief_n of_o the_o godly_a the_o relation_n of_o man_n either_o natural_a or_o civil_a will_v add_v something_o too_o this_o sorrow_n will_v be_v great_a than_o ordinary_a in_o a_o christian_a he_o will_v melt_v in_o a_o particular_a tenderness_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o kindred_n parent_n or_o child_n husband_n or_o wife_n and_o most_o of_o all_o minister_n for_o their_o people_n how_o pathetical_o do_v this_o appear_v in_o st._n paul_n 2_o cor._n 12._o 21._o and_o lest_o when_o i_o come_v again_o my_o god_n will_v humble_v i_o among_o you_o and_o that_o i_o shall_v bewail_v many_o which_o have_v sin_v already_o and_o have_v not_o repent_v of_o the_o uncleanness_n and_o fornication_n and_o lasciviousness_n which_o they_o have_v commit_v a_o man_n can_v but_o be_v more_o particular_o touch_v with_o the_o sin_n of_o that_o nation_n and_o of_o that_o city_n and_o congregation_n and_o family_n whereof_o he_o be_v a_o member_n 2_o pet._n 2._o 8._o for_o that_o righteous_a man_n dwell_v among_o they_o in_o see_v these_o tear_n be_v very_o well_o spend_v if_o pour_v forth_o before_o god_n in_o their_o behalf_n for_o in_o his_o hand_n as_o that_o wise_a king_n confess_v be_v their_o heart_n compare_v to_o river_n of_o water_n let_v their_o motion_n be_v never_o so_o impetuous_a yet_o he_o turn_v they_o whither_o he_o please_v and_o who_o know_v but_o these_o river_n of_o water_n these_o tear_n may_v prevail_v with_o the_o lord_n to_o reduce_v the_o violent_a current_n of_o that_o river_n a_o king_n heart_n from_o the_o wrong_a channel_n but_o to_o proceed_v the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v it_o consider_v in_o this_o affection_n be_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o 1_o it_o be_v not_o a_o stoical_a apathy_n and_o affect_a carelessness_n much_o less_o a_o delightful_a partake_n with_o sinful_a practice_n 2_o not_o a_o proud_a set_v off_o their_o own_o goodness_n with_o mark_v the_o sin_n of_o other_o as_o the_o pharisee_n do_v in_o the_o gospel_n 3._o not_o the_o derision_n and_o mock_v of_o the_o folly_n of_o man_n with_o that_o laugh_a philosopher_n it_o come_v near_a to_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o other_o that_o weep_v always_o for_o it_o it_o be_v not_o a_o bitter_a bilious_a anger_n break_v forth_o into_o rail_n and_o reproach_n nor_o a_o upbraid_a insultation_n nor_o be_v it_o a_o vindictive_a desire_n of_o punishment_n vent_v itself_o in_o curse_n and_o imprecation_n which_o be_v the_o rash_a temper_n of_o many_o but_o especial_o of_o the_o vulgar_a sort_n the_o disciple_n motion_n to_o christ_n be_v far_o different_a from_o that_o way_n and_o yet_o he_o say_v to_o they_o you_o know_v not_o of_o what_o spirit_n you_o be_v they_o think_v they_o have_v be_v of_o elias_n his_o spirit_n but_o he_o tell_v they_o they_o be_v mistake_v and_o do_v not_o know_v of_o what_o a_o spirit_n they_o be_v in_o that_o
motion_n thus_o heady_a zeal_n often_o mistake_v and_o flatter_v itself_o we_o find_v not_o here_o a_o desire_n of_o fire_n to_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n upon_o the_o breaker_n of_o the_o law_n but_o such_o a_o grief_n as_o will_v rather_o bring_v water_n to_o quench_v it_o if_o it_o be_v fall_v on_o they_o river_n of_o water_n etc._n etc._n the_o degree_n of_o this_o sorrow_n it_o be_v vehement_a not_o a_o light_n transient_a dislike_n but_o a_o deep_a resentment_n such_o as_o cause_v not_o some_o few_o sigh_n or_o some_o drop_n of_o tear_n but_z rivers_z aquarum_fw-la it_o be_v true_a the_o measure_n and_o degree_n of_o sorrow_n measure_n for_o sin_n whether_o their_o own_o or_o other_o be_v different_a in_o divers_a person_n that_o be_v yet_o true_a mourner_n and_o they_o be_v also_o different_a in_o the_o same_o person_n at_o divers_a time_n not_o only_o upon_o the_o difference_n of_o the_o cause_n but_o even_o where_o the_o cause_n be_v equal_a upon_o the_o different_a influence_n and_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n sometime_o it_o please_v he_o to_o warm_v and_o melt_v the_o heart_n more_o abundant_o and_o so_o he_o raise_v these_o river_n in_o these_o eye_n to_o a_o high_a tide_n than_o ordinary_a sometime_o they_o remove_v again_o but_o yet_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v always_o serious_a and_o sincere_a and_o that_o be_v the_o other_o quality_n here_o remarkable_a in_o it_o it_o be_v not_o a_o histrionical_a weep_n only_o in_o public_a for_o the_o speech_n be_v here_o direct_v to_o god_n as_o a_o more_o frequent_a witness_n of_o these_o tear_n than_o any_o other_o who_o be_v always_o the_o witness_n of_o the_o sincerity_n of_o they_o even_o when_o they_o can_v be_v hide_v from_o the_o eye_n of_o man_n for_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o they_o may_v and_o shall_v have_v vent_n in_o public_a especial_o at_o such_o time_n as_o be_v set_v a_o part_n for_o solemn_a mourn_a and_o humiliation_n yet_o even_o then_o usual_o these_o stream_n run_v deep_a where_o they_o be_v still_a and_o most_o quiet_o convey_v but_o howsoever_o sure_o they_o will_v not_o be_v few_o and_o less_o frequent_a alone_o than_o in_o company_n for_o that_o be_v a_o little_a subject_n to_o suspicion_n jer._n 9_o 1._o oh_o that_o my_o head_n be_v water_n and_o my_o eye_n a_o fountain_n of_o tear_n that_o i_o may_v weep_v day_n and_o night_n for_o the_o slay_v of_o the_o daughter_n of_o my_o people_n and_o 13._o 17._o but_o if_o you_o will_v not_o hear_v it_o my_o soul_n shall_v weep_v in_o secret_a place_n for_o your_o pride_n and_o my_o eye_n shall_v weep_v sore_o and_o run_v down_o with_o tear_n because_o the_o lord_n flock_n be_v carry_v away_o captive_a the_o subject_a of_o this_o affection_n be_v not_o the_o subject_a ungodly_a now_o to_o inquire_v a_o little_a into_o the_o cause_n of_o this_o why_o the_o break_n of_o god_n law_n shall_v cause_v such_o sorrow_n in_o the_o godly_a as_o here_o break_v forth_o into_o abundant_a of_o tear_n we_o shall_v find_v it_o very_o reasonable_a if_o we_o consider_v 1._o the_o nature_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o transgression_n or_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n as_o the_o apostle_n define_v it_o 2._o the_o nature_n of_o this_o sorrow_n and_o these_o tear_n 3._o the_o nature_n of_o the_o godly_a 1._o sin_n be_v the_o great_a evil_n in_o the_o world_n yea_o true_o in_o comparison_n it_o alone_o be_v worth_a the_o name_n of_o evil_a and_o therefore_o may_v just_o challenge_v sorrow_n and_o the_o great_a sorrow_n the_o great_a of_o evil_n it_o be_v both_o formal_o in_o that_o it_o alone_o be_v the_o defilement_n and_o deformity_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o casual_o be_v the_o root_n from_o whence_o all_o other_o evil_n spring_n the_o fruitful_a womb_n that_o conceive_v and_o bring_v forth_o all_o those_o misery_n that_o either_o man_n feel_v or_o have_v cause_n to_o fear_v whence_o be_v all_o those_o personal_a evil_n incident_a to_o man_n in_o their_o estate_n or_o in_o their_o body_n or_o mind_n outward_a turmoil_n and_o disease_n and_o inward_a discontent_n and_o death_n itself_o in_o all_o the_o kind_n of_o it_o be_v they_o not_o all_o the_o fruit_n of_o that_o bitter_a root_n whence_o arise_v these_o public_a misery_n of_o nation_n and_o kingdom_n but_o from_o the_o epidemic_a national_a sin_n of_o the_o people_n as_o the_o deserve_n and_o procure_v cause_n at_o god_n hand_n and_o withal_o oftentimes_o from_o the_o ambitious_a and_o wicked_a practice_n of_o some_o particular_a man_n as_o the_o work_n and_o effect_v cause_n so_o that_o every_o way_n if_o we_o follow_v these_o evil_n home_o to_o their_o original_n we_o shall_v find_v it_o to_o be_v sin_n or_o the_o break_n of_o god_n law_n ungodly_a man_n though_o they_o meddle_v not_o with_o public_a affair_n at_o all_o yea_o though_o they_o be_v faithful_a and_o honest_a in_o meddle_v with_o they_o yet_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o impious_a life_n be_v traitor_n to_o their_o nation_n they_o be_v true_o the_o incendiary_n of_o state_n and_o kingdom_n and_o these_o mourner_n though_o they_o can_v do_v no_o more_o be_v the_o loyall_a and_o serviceable_a subject_n bring_v tear_n to_o quench_v the_o fire_n of_o wrath_n river_n of_o water_n and_o therefore_o sorrow_n and_o tear_n be_v not_o only_o most_o due_a to_o sin_n as_o the_o great_a of_o evil_n but_o they_o be_v best_o bestow_v upon_o it_o if_o they_o can_v do_v any_o thing_n to_o its_o redress_n because_o that_o be_v both_o the_o sure_a and_o most_o compendious_a way_n to_o remedy_v all_o tear_n of_o some_o few_o may_v avert_v the_o punishment_n of_o many_o yea_o of_o a_o whole_a land_n and_o if_o not_o so_o yet_o be_v they_o not_o lose_v the_o mourner_n themselves_o have_v always_o benefit_n by_o they_o as_o you_o have_v it_o in_o that_o know_a place_n ezek._n 9_o they_o that_o mourn_v for_o the_o common_a abomination_n be_v mark_v and_o the_o common_a desolation_n take_v not_o hold_v on_o they_o this_o mourning_n for_o other_o man_n wickedness_n both_o testify_v and_o preserve_v the_o godly_a man_n innocence_n i_o say_v it_o preserve_v it_o as_o well_o as_o testify_v it_o it_o keep_v they_o from_o the_o contagion_n of_o that_o bad_a air_n they_o live_v in_o for_o without_o this_o sin_n will_v soon_o grow_v familiar_a it_o be_v good_a for_o man_n to_o keep_v up_o and_o maintain_v in_o their_o soul_n a_o dislike_n of_o sin_n for_o when_o once_o it_o cease_v to_o be_v displease_v to_o a_o man_n it_o will_v ere_o long_o begin_v to_o be_v please_v to_o he_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o godly_a we_o shall_v see_v this_o mourn_a suit_n with_o it_o exceed_o both_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o relation_n to_o god_n and_o to_o man_n god_n be_v his_o father_n and_o therefore_o it_o can_v but_o grieve_v he_o much_o to_o see_v he_o offend_v and_o dishonour_v love_n to_o god_n and_o consequent_o to_o his_o law_n and_o love_n to_o man_n and_o desire_v
