the_o intelligent_a part_n be_v more_o clear_a and_o instructive_a and_o proceed_v without_o any_o distraction_n at_o all_o no_o wonder_n therefore_o if_o man_n but_o little_a train_v in_o philosophy_n make_v some_o false_a step_n while_o their_o passion_n be_v not_o yet_o total_o subdue_v and_o their_o reason_n do_v not_o operate_v in_o its_o full_a strength_n and_o when_o they_o do_v so_o they_o accuse_v themselves_o only_o as_o have_v admit_v that_o distinction_n of_o thing_n in_o and_o out_o of_o our_o own_o power_n though_o as_o yet_o they_o seem_v to_o have_v but_o a_o imperfect_a notion_n of_o it_o but_o they_o that_o be_v ignorant_a and_o absolute_o untaught_a must_v needs_o commit_v a_o world_n of_o error_n both_o because_o of_o that_o violent_a agitation_n which_o their_o passion_n be_v continual_o in_o and_o of_o the_o ignorance_n of_o their_o rational_a part_n which_o have_v not_o yet_o learned_a to_o distinguish_v real_a good_a and_o evil_a from_o what_o be_v so_o in_o appearance_n only_o nor_o do_v it_o take_v they_o off_o from_o brutality_n not_o so_o much_o as_o in_o thought_n only_o by_o brutality_n i_o mean_v such_o low_a and_o mean_a notion_n as_o persuade_v we_o that_o our_o body_n be_v proper_o ourselves_o and_o our_o nature_n or_o which_o be_v yet_o worse_o when_o we_o think_v our_o riches_n so_o as_o the_o covetous_a do_v now_o while_o we_o continue_v thus_o ignorant_a there_o be_v several_a account_n to_o be_v give_v for_o our_o do_v amiss_o we_o do_v it_o because_o we_o think_v all_o our_o good_a and_o evil_a consist_v in_o thing_n without_o we_o and_o not_o be_v at_o all_o sensible_a what_o be_v proper_o the_o happiness_n or_o unhappiness_n of_o humane_a nature_n or_o whence_o it_o proceed_v we_o fall_v erroneous_a imagination_n that_o it_o proceed_v from_o thing_n without_o we_o and_o indeed_o it_o be_v easy_a and_o pleasant_a and_o fit_a for_o ignorant_a wretch_n to_o shuffle_v off_o

epictetus_n be_v allow_v to_o have_v any_o authority_n in_o what_o he_o say_v or_o the_o great_a governor_n of_o all_o thing_n be_v grant_v to_o order_v the_o world_n in_o wisdom_n and_o justice_n these_o occasion_n to_o almighty_a god_n but_o must_v acquit_v his_o providence_n and_o acknowledge_v it_o to_o be_v infinite_o wise_a and_o good_n now_o the_o thing_n in_o which_o all_o these_o seem_a evil_n be_v and_o from_o whence_o they_o spring_v must_v be_v consider_v in_o this_o condition_n of_o mortality_n and_o undergo_a the_o vicissitude_n of_o generation_n and_o corruption_n either_o as_o body_n or_o soul_n and_o of_o these_o soul_n again_o some_o be_v irrational_a of_o the_o same_o date_n and_o duration_n with_o the_o body_n and_o have_v none_o or_o but_o very_o little_a peculiar_a excellence_n of_o their_o own_o their_o office_n and_o power_n extend_v no_o far_o than_o mere_o the_o animate_v those_o body_n to_o which_o they_o belong_v and_o therefore_o all_o their_o motion_n depend_v upon_o and_o proceed_v in_o conjunction_n with_o the_o body_n but_o other_o soul_n be_v rational_a these_o have_v a_o inward_a principle_n of_o motion_n and_o a_o essence_n and_o excellence_n distinct_a from_o their_o body_n they_o move_v by_o their_o own_o choice_n and_o be_v absolute_a in_o the_o dispose_n their_o own_o desire_n and_o inclination_n now_o the_o body_n belong_v to_o these_o be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n pure_o mechanical_a and_o derive_v their_o essence_n from_o external_n cause_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o motion_n of_o heavenly_a body_n which_o influence_n their_o generation_n and_o corruption_n and_o the_o various_a alteration_n through_o which_o they_o pass_v but_o if_o we_o come_v near_o and_o descend_v to_o the_o immediate_a and_o material_a cause_n than_o they_o be_v move_v and_o affect_v by_o a_o mutual_a operation_n upon_o one_o another_o for_o this_o be_v agreeable_a to_o all_o the_o reason_n in_o the_o world_n that_o temporary_a and_o corruptible_a thing_n shall_v depend_v upon_o the_o eternal_a for_o their_o subsistence_n and_o be_v obedient_a to_o their_o influence_n mechanical_a being_n upon_o such_o as_o be_v endue_v with_o a_o faculty_n of_o selfmotion_n and_o those_o that_o be_v contain_v within_o other_o upon_o the_o ambient_n that_o contain_v they_o this_o be_v the_o constant_a method_n and_o rule_n of_o nature_n that_o these_o shall_v follow_v the_o other_o superior_a to_o they_o as_o have_v no_o principle_n of_o motion_n in_o themselves_o no_o faculty_n of_o choose_v no_o power_n of_o determine_v their_o â—_z or_o affection_n of_o their_o nature_n no_o merit_n or_o demerit_n from_o choice_n or_o action_n but_o be_v only_o good_a or_o evil_a in_o respect_n and_o proportion_n to_o their_o cause_n just_o as_o the_o shadow_n of_o body_n do_v not_o choose_v their_o side_n or_o shape_v as_o they_o please_v but_o be_v necessary_o determine_v by_o their_o cause_n and_o their_o circumstance_n and_o be_v never_o the_o worse_o or_o the_o better_a for_o those_o determination_n now_o as_o to_o body_n whatever_o change_n they_o undergo_v this_o variety_n can_v be_v no_o ill_a to_o they_o whether_o they_o be_v compound_v or_o simple_a body_n first_o of_o all_o because_o it_o be_v what_o the_o condition_n of_o their_o nature_n have_v make_v they_o liable_a to_o they_o be_v bind_v in_o law_n irrevocable_a which_o they_o may_v neither_o control_v nor_o resist_v and_o consequent_o can_v receive_v no_o harm_n by_o whatever_o they_o impose_v as_o have_v no_o power_n to_o by_o decay_n and_o death_n be_v deliver_v from_o all_o that_o trouble_v and_o pain_n and_o mutual_a strife_n of_o contrary_a quality_n in_o they_o and_o in_o this_o case_n each_o of_o the_o simple_n be_v restore_v to_o its_o primitive_a mass_n and_o recover_v itself_o from_o that_o weakness_n which_o be_v occasion_v by_o this_o opposition_n of_o contrary_a humour_n for_o as_o each_o of_o the_o ingredient_n in_o composition_n make_v some_o impression_n upon_o its_o opposite_a so_o it_o likewise_o continual_o receive_v some_o from_o it_o and_o suffer_v by_o it_o but_o now_o when_o the_o simple_n be_v change_v according_a to_o the_o change_n of_o the_o contrary_a quality_n they_o return_v again_o to_o their_o own_o primitive_a be_v thus_o water_n evaporate_v into_o the_o air_n from_o whence_o it_o come_v and_o air_n be_v turn_v into_o fire_n from_o whence_o it_o original_o be_v and_o i_o can_v suppose_v any_o evil_n in_o thing_n of_o this_o kind_n though_o inundation_n or_o fire_n or_o any_o the_o most_o violent_a change_n in_o nature_n shall_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o these_o inequality_n in_o the_o element_n that_o compose_v the_o universe_n or_o though_o pestilence_n and_o earthquake_n shall_v destroy_v and_o dash_v in_o piece_n the_o

stifle_v by_o that_o prevalency_n of_o passion_n which_o bribe_n and_o sway_v the_o soul_n so_o that_o there_o can_v possible_o be_v any_o such_o thing_n in_o nature_n as_o a_o absolute_a evil_n when_o consider_v in_o all_o the_o circumstance_n of_o it_o and_o that_o which_o never_o have_v any_o be_v may_v soon_o be_v than_o that_o even_o this_o accidental_a be_v in_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v entire_o evil_a and_o choose_v as_o such_o some_o perhaps_o may_v imagine_v that_o god_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o evil_a as_o have_v give_v the_o soul_n this_o freedom_n to_o virtue_n or_o vice_n to_o the_o ill_a management_n whereof_o that_o evil_a be_v owe_v now_o indeed_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v be_v endue_v with_o a_o faculty_n of_o act_v free_o and_o absolute_o be_v evil_a than_o he_o who_o give_v this_o faculty_n must_v be_v confess_v the_o cause_n of_o evil_n but_o if_o such_o a_o power_n be_v good_a a_o great_a and_o more_o valuable_a good_a than_o all_o the_o advantage_n of_o the_o world_n beside_o why_o then_o shall_v he_o who_o have_v give_v we_o the_o good_a be_v for_o so_o do_v charge_v with_o the_o evil_a since_o therefore_o that_o which_o be_v most_o agreeable_a to_o our_o nature_n and_o reason_n be_v also_o most_o eligible_a and_o desirable_a what_o account_n can_v be_v give_v why_o any_o one_o that_o be_v a_o man_n and_o understand_v at_o all_o wherein_o the_o peculiar_a excellence_n of_o a_o man_n consist_v shall_v rather_o wish_v to_o be_v a_o plant_n or_o any_o other_o irrational_a creature_n than_o that_o which_o god_n have_v make_v he_o though_o at_o the_o same_o time_n we_o must_v allow_v that_o even_o plant_n and_o other_o irrational_a being_n be_v good_a in_o their_o kind_a and_o capacity_n that_o be_v in_o a_o low_a degree_n and_o a_o disposal_n of_o this_o matter_n so_o that_o nothing_o can_v possible_o bring_v our_o desire_n or_o our_o aversion_n under_o any_o compulsion_n to_o act_v as_o we_o will_v not_o have_v they_o or_o under_o any_o restraint_n not_o to_o act_v as_o we_o will_v have_v they_o such_o a_o free_a nature_n and_o absolute_a power_n as_o this_o be_v in_o my_o opinion_n a_o glorious_a privilege_n a_o most_o magnificent_a and_o royal_a prerogative_n and_o the_o person_n in_o who_o it_o be_v lodge_v be_v thereby_o make_v a_o great_a a_o happy_a a_o arbitrary_a prince_n but_o if_o such_o a_o soul_n contribute_v to_o its_o own_o deviation_n and_o can_v choose_v whether_o it_o will_v so_o deviate_v or_o no_o where_o can_v any_o miscarriage_n of_o that_o kind_n be_v lay_v with_o any_o tolerable_a justice_n but_o to_o the_o charge_n of_o the_o soul_n itself_o which_o be_v the_o true_a original_a and_o cause_n both_o of_o its_o own_o good_a and_o of_o all_o the_o deflexion_n from_o it_o since_o in_o and_o by_o it_o such_o deflexion_n first_o begin_v for_o the_o great_a creator_n who_o have_v thus_o make_v it_o so_o as_o to_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o its_o own_o ruin_n do_v not_o absolute_o ruin_v it_o but_o only_o make_v it_o capable_a of_o be_v ruin_v and_o yet_o at_o the_o same_o time_n too_o utter_o incapable_a of_o it_o without_o her_o own_o consent_n if_o therefore_o this_o volition_n or_o consent_n be_v a_o internal_a motion_n of_o her_o own_o she_o be_v the_o sole_a cause_n of_o her_o own_o sin_n and_o misery_n behold_v therefore_o the_o goodness_n and_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n for_o since_o the_o constitution_n of_o the_o world_n and_o order_n of_o nature_n make_v a_o middle_a sort_n of_o being_n necessary_a that_o shall_v stand_v between_o those_o that_o be_v always_o above_o and_o those_o that_o be_v always_o below_o thing_n that_o shall_v bear_v a_o resemblance_n and_o be_v conform_v sometime_o to_o one_o and_o sometime_o to_o the_o other_o of_o these_o being_n and_o thus_o make_v the_o whole_a perfect_a by_o partake_v of_o and_o knit_v together_o the_o distant_a extreme_n since_o also_o this_o tendency_n to_o thing_n below_o we_o be_v but_o a_o accidental_a and_o additional_a thing_n and_o this_o prudence_n be_v the_o very_a thing_n capable_a of_o depravation_n he_o have_v endue_v this_o middle_a sort_n of_o being_n with_o such_o a_o tendency_n yet_o so_o as_o that_o it_o may_v still_o remain_v untainted_a and_o undepraved_a if_o it_o will_v do_v so_o and_o that_o he_o himself_o may_v be_v clear_a upon_o all_o account_n and_o in_o no_o degree_n the_o cause_n of_o any_o manner_n of_o evil._n these_o argument_n i_o have_v insist_v on_o the_o more_o large_o not_o only_o because_o they_o be_v proper_a for_o the_o explain_v what_o that_o all_o their_o government_n and_o all_o their_o disposal_n be_v wise_a and_o just_o and_o good_n for_o if_o a_o man_n be_v of_o opinion_n that_o there_o be_v no_o god_n or_o if_o he_o allow_v his_o existence_n but_o deny_v his_o providence_n or_o if_o he_o allow_v both_o these_o but_o think_v that_o god_n and_o that_o providence_n defective_a in_o his_o counsel_n or_o unjust_a in_o his_o distribution_n such_o a_o one_o can_v never_o pay_v he_o true_a honour_n and_o hearty_a adoration_n nor_o submit_v with_o a_o resign_v and_o content_v spirit_n to_o the_o various_a accident_n of_o
